RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

The Misima gold mine, located on Misima Island within the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, was operated by Misima Mines Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited (Placer), between 1988 and 2004. During this period, the mine produced 3.7 Moz of gold and 22.2 Moz of silver. In June 2012, the Special Mining Lease for the property was surrendered and incorporated into an Exploration Licence (EL). WCB Resources Ltd (WCB) entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Pan Pacific Copper covering this EL.In June 2013, WCB published a new mineral resource of the Umuna deposit at Misima. All the drill hole data used for estimation was historical data collected by the previous owners of the Misima mine between 1977 and 2001. No new drilling was carried out by WCB. Confidence that the data could be relied on was provided by detailed interrogation of the existing data, reconciliation of the new resource model against production data and significant input from individuals who had previously been involved with the data collection, resource estimation and production activities of the Misima mine during its operation.This extended abstract will consider the challenges associated with locating, retrieving and validating historical data to use as inputs to produce an updated Mineral Resource estimate and comment on the material value of appropriate data storage, documentation and record keeping through the life of a project. It will also comment on the value of WCB obtaining access to the intellectual knowledge of many professionals that were former employees of Placer. "BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. Underground infrastructure is often a critical component of transportation and utility schemes. It is characterised by long design lives with limited access for inspection and maintenance. The exposure environment can be difficult to assess since it will often vary substantially between different locations in the same facility and with time during construction and in service. In addition, the specific demands placed upon underground infrastructure are not well covered by the exposure classes and other guidance given within current codes of practice. When problems occur they can be difficult to rectify and involve significant disruption.Given these substantial risks the prudent designer may adopt a systematic ‘durability planning’ approach which:· defines the environment and principal deterioration mechanisms for the various elements and construction materials,· predicts the design life for alternative durability enhancement options, and· recommends associated measures to be adopted during construction and in service.This paper describes the development of durability planning within Halcrow, giving examples of its use from its first implementation on tunnels under the Suez Canal in 1993 to recent projects in the Middle East and Australia. It seeks to demystify the process, identify shortcomings and speculate on its future development within the civil and mining sectors.

The general mechanism of recrystallisation for cold worked metal is well established, and need be only briefly summarised with a few references to recent articles which clarify minor points. The types of extension, whether by stretching, drawing, hammering, rolling, etc., do not alter the general principles (1), although quantitative results may differ somewhat, particularly with regard to differences between the surface and interior of samples.These principles can be summarised as follows: The first stage in annealing is a recovery (sometimes known as relaxation) of physical properties such as hardness, elongation, etc., without any appearance of recrystallisation; the second stage involves a further alteration in physical properties, accompanying the formation of new recrystallised grains which replace the original structure; a possible third stage involves an increase in the grain size of the completely recrystallised structure by absorption of smaller grains by larger ones. These three stages will be referred to as recovery, recrystallisation, and grain growth. Depending on conditions, the three stages may be clearly marked or may occur more or less simultaneously.For a given annealing temperature, cold deformations below a certain amount fail to give recrystallisation, and the final structure consists of the original grains which have recovered and possibly become more equiaxed. When a certain deformation, critical for that annealing temperature, is given, recrystallisation can occur, and will give the maximum recrystallised grain size.Increasing deformations beyond this give progressively smaller grain sizes.For each material there is a minimum recrystallisation temperature, below which recrystallisation will not occur whatever the deformation or time of annealing. For a given deformation there is a temperature, critical for that deformation, below which recrystallisation will not occur, and above which it will take place with increasing rapidity.

The top submerged lance (TSL) technology, developed in the 1970s, is now widely used for the processing of a range of materials. The key advantage the ISASMELT™ TSL technology provided was the ability to process feed materials in a highly turbulent bath, reaching close to equilibrium conditions, uniquely allowing for operation below the liquidus of the molten slag phase. The details on what happened below the liquidus line in the phase diagram became critical for the successful operation of the technology. During the development of the ISASMELT™ technology this led to a collaboration between the Process Technology group of Mount Isa Mines, now part of Glencore Technology, and the Pyrometallurgy Research Centre (PYROSEARCH) at The University of Queensland. The fusion of the phase equilibria research into the technology development allowed for understanding of the behaviour of molten splash, reliable tapping of the furnace, and the ability to operate the furnace with a refractory lining and achieve a year campaign life in excess of four years. The outcome has allowed for the highly successful adaption of the ISASMELT™ technology to recycling of complex feed streams necessary to drive circularity in our modern global economy.

Geological modelling provides a means of spatially representing the three dimensional distribution of geological information to downstream stakeholders. The geologist completing the modelling work intimately understands the varying degrees of confidence, assumptions and extrapolation required to honour the data. Geological models are often taken and used by stakeholders without fully understanding this modelling process. This can lead to confusion amongst stakeholders when the geological model shows variable reconciliation. A method for visually communicating the confidence of the spatial distribution of geological models has been created by the Rio Tinto Iron Ore structural geology group for use primarily in geotechnical engineering investigations. A numeric confidence rating is assigned to each geological data point used in the creation of a geological surface. This is based on data type, collection method and reliability to indicate potential error in distance from its modelled location. In regions of sparse data, confidence ratings are inserted based upon the geologistÆs experience and knowledge of the geology, whereas mapped geological contacts or drill hole intersections are assigned a higher confidence rating. A regular grid of points is registered to the geological surface and each of these grid points is assigned a confidence rating using an inverse distance weighting using a nearest neighbour approach. The resulting grid is colour coded according to the confidence rating to provide a visual representation of the variable confidence of the geological surface in three dimensions. Subjectivity and bias from the geologist is minimised by critically analysing the input geological data and then applying this methodology to represent the confidence in the spatial characteristics of geological models. Understanding of this confidence enables mining professionals to make informed decisions and identify areas that require further geological investigative work. A risk-robust development of a heavy mineral resource requires an assessment of the geological uncertainty and spatial variability of the key factors impacting the mining and processing operation. Attributes of interest are the total heavy mineral grade, the slime content and the amount of oversized particles. The modelling of a mineral sand deposit presents two main challenges. Firstly, the exact location of the geological boundaries are obscure due to the complex interaction of the deposit formation processes. Secondly, the properties of interest exhibit a rather complex transitional behaviour across the so-called soft boundaries. Traditionally, the modelling exercise is restricted to a consecutive stochastic simulation of distinct geological facies and orebody properties. This results in different zones separated by hard boundaries, ignoring the typical transitional behaviour.This contribution presents an alternative approach which models the entire sand body as a single domain while accounting for the complex trends present. Error curves are used to infer covariance model parameters without the need of a prior removal of the trend. The principle is based on minimising the differences between empirical and theoretical errors resulting from two methods of prediction calculated for different rings of influence. The added value results from the unambiguous decomposition of the spatial variation into a deterministic trend and a stochastic residual. The trend model neither overfits nor underfits the data. The calculated residuals are thus unbiased and the uncertainty can be correctly assessed.The effort results in a characterisation of the resource uncertainty which provides a more realistic image of the spatial variability of the key properties in and across the geological domains of an existing heavy mineral sand deposit.CITATION:Wambeke, T and Benndorf, J, 2014. A trigger action response plan (TARP) provides a structured response to escalating levels of risk. In mining, TARPs are typically applied to primary hazards such as inrush, strata failure or heating. Necessary for the creation and deployment of a TARP is a monitoring system capable of detecting deviations from normal conditions. The advent of real-time instruments capable of measuring diesel particulate matter now permit decision-making within shifts to address possible overexposure. Deploying a TARP for diesel exhaust emissions can lower the probability of a person’s average exposure (over a full shift) exceeding the exposure standard by detecting deviations of diesel particulate concentrations from normal conditions. This enables pre-emptive action to mitigate or protect. Deep cuts in CO2 emissions will be required to stabilise and, in the long term, decrease CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Technologies for capturing CO2 from major stationary sources (power stations, industrial plants, etc) and storing that CO2 for long periods of time is one of few near term options for decreasing CO2 emissions. This transition to low carbon intensity energy and possibly the hydrogen economy through renewables and in the long-term technological developments such as artificial photosynthesis.Capture of CO2 from post combustion emissions can be done using a range of technologies though costs are currently high and dependent on the concentration of CO2 in the emissions. Techniques include solvents, pressure swing adsorption and the use of membranes. Options for decreasing capture costs by increasing the concentration of CO2 in the emission stream include the use of oxyfuels (in pulverized fuel types boilers) and by moving to integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) operations either simply for power generation or for poly-generation opportunities. Once the CO2 has been captured it can be stored using a variety of methods. Storage in the ocean has been suggested but is considered an unlikely option because of environmental uncertainties and political opposition. Mineral storage is a niche opportunity. The greatest potential lies in geological storage of CO2 and this option is commanding increased attention from the Australian and international community.In Australia, the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) is an important new initiative that will support energy companies and energy intensive industries in meeting challenges posed by greenhouse gas issues and assist them in their efforts to reduce their emissions profile.The progress of geo-sequestration and the challenges in the capture and separation of CO2 in the process industries are discussed.

The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of fields that make up the Central Victorian Goldfield. Since 1993, Bendigo Mining NL has been carrying out an extensive re-evaluation of the goldfield and is currently well advanced in developing an underground mine. The sediment-hosted auriferous quartz reefs are structurally complex and closely associated with anticlinal axes and reverse faulting. The gold within the quartz reefs is characterised by both its coarse nature (100 up to >5000 ¦m) and its erratic distribution; as a result, the Bendigo Goldfield is classed as an extreme nugget effect system. This characteristic ensures that the Bendigo mineralisation is very challenging to sample and evaluate. In this case, diamond drilling is a good measure of structure and geological continuity, but a poor measure of grade and grade distribution. Drilling, combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and detailed geological studies are required for resource evaluation. For grade control a balance has to be sought between sample representativness, cost, turn around time and practicality. Extreme nugget effect deposits like Bendigo, require the use of bulk samples in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can define ore from waste. Bulk sampling and on-vein development are still necessary for resource and reserve estimation.

"Northparkes installed and commissioned a secondary crushing circuit in 2010 to debottleneck the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill constrained grinding circuits. Following further improvements to the circuit (inclusion of a double deck vibrating screen), the project successfully delivered finer feed to the SAG mill. The result of this project was an increase in the milled tonnes from 5.6 Mt/a in 2012 to 6.0 Mt/a in 2013.The increased throughput rates introduced new challenges with the circuit becoming power limited. How to best optimise the available comminution power, while delivering the optimal particle size to the flotation circuit was made the key optimisation objective. To achieve this objective, Northparkes initiated a project that included engaging comminution experts. Recommendations included changes to the SAG mill including mill lifter design, increased grinding media charge levels and reduced grinding media size with aim of producing a finer grind size.Northparkes implemented these recommendations along with some other changes to SAG discharge grates and the mill discharge vibrating screen. This achieved a substantial reduction in the flotation feed particle size distribution (approximately 20 microns) by utilising increased average SAG power utilisation, in turn resulting in a two per cent increase in copper recovery.With power utilisation now maximised, the next phase of optimisation has moved to the throughput-grind-recovery relationship and the cost benefit analysis of installing additional grinding power.Citation:Sulianto, Y, Trott, T, Morgan, D, Bell, T, Kock, F and Putland, B, 2016. In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. The appearance of the Cornish miner in South Australia was, in the simplest terms, the result of resource development economics. In Cornwall in the middle of the 19th century tin and copper mining was declining, while in the new colony of South Australia copper mining was booming. Experienced hard rock miners in Cornwall there- fore escaped unemployment at home by accepting an assisted passage to South Australia. There, in a colony where they were needed, they made their skills available and received good wages. There are many testimonies which support this simple thesis. Take for example the following extracts from contemporary newspapers in Corn- wall: Persons of small capital will find this an excellent opportunity for emigrating to the young and thriving colony ... The miner will find a rich and unbroken field for his operations. The Colony abounds with minerals... (West Briton, 19 July 1844) Miners make a great deal of money here (South Australia). All of them earn ú2 to ú3 per week and in many cases when they have a portion of the mine on tribute one person has cleared ú100 in a couple of months or so. (Cornwall Royal Gazette, 21 July 1848)

There is a well-known saying, variously attributed to the great King Solomon and other sages of antiquity, to the effect that 'there is nothing new under the sun'. The inventive genius of man, as far as it is personified in the metallurgist, has often had the truth of this statement poignantly brought to mind when investigating the priority of ideas in its own particular branch of science. Not infrequently some operation, at first inilocently taken for a novel procedure, has later been found to have had an irrefutable precedent in the more or less remote past.When confronted by a question of this kind the metallurgist can generally much simplify his search if he at once turns his scrutinising gaze towards that ancient home of metallurgy, Germany. Vast departments of the smelting art have originated there, and even when Germany has not been in position to claim priority of invention, it has at least been characterised by a distinction equally as worthy - ie that of the faithful and authoritative exposition of the theoretical grounds on which the invention rests.In the present instance, in endeavouring to trace the history of pyritic smelting, the writer has naturally turned in the abovementioned direction, and not without some result, although the recorded data are, as might have been expected, meagre. A complete history of the art of beneflciating ores by means of fire, in all its many ramifications, still remains to be written. Possibly it may never be written, for the extent of the subject is tremendous. It is even practically impossible to clearly trace the development of one of its most modest sub-branches in satisfactory detail, or to present that branch without going to a considerable extent into related matters of a merely general character. For the purpose of dealing with the subject it will be convenient to divide it into two concurrent heads, and to distinguish, for historical reasons as well as for metallurgical ones, between that branch of the general method of matte smelting, which, until about 1891, has been called 'pyritic smelting', and the more recent offshoot of the latter, which, by distinction, may be called 'pyrite smelting'. The nature of pyritic smelting was clearly defmed by Dr John Percy in 1880, and his interpretation3 may be accepted as well known. To recall the characteristics of the method we may perhaps paraphrase Dr Percy's meaning by describing the process as a special method for the smelting of lean or dry silver or gold ores, which do not contain sufficient lead or copper for these metals to act conveniently as collectors of the precious metals. The operation is conducted in a blast furnace, with an amount of carbonaceous fuel sufficing to produce an exclusively reducing atmosphere, and with the addition of pyrites, in order to form a regulus in which the precious metals shall be concentrated, the pyrites themselves being either argentiferous, auriferous, or cupriferous, or any combination of these three, or wholly barren of metal values. In the common acceptation of the term, it is understood that the use of the reverberatory furnace is excluded.

The Yara Siilinjärvi plant is located in the central part of Finland. Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine and annually it produces 1 Mt of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 Mt of tailings.At the beginning of 2017, tailings handling in Yara Siilinjärvi was brought to a new era, by replacing the conventional tailings storage facility with a new tailings treatment plant. The new high-density tailings disposal system with two paste thickeners increased the percentage of solids in the slurry from 45–48 per cent to 66-68 per cent, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current tailings storage facility by 15 years; from 2020 to 2035.This paper presents the storyline of the Yara Paste Plant Project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After some successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process instrumentation and automation played a key role in the project, as the aim of the Yara Project was to make the plant operable remotely from the main plant. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances.This paper discusses the results from the Yara site since the new tailings treatment plant commenced. Some of the main points are that the operation has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68 per cent, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. This control system additionally facilitates minimum use of flocculant, which delivers significant savings to operating costs. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the Paste Plant. During the first year of operation, the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97 per cent.Currently, the plant still has its own staff working there during the daytime, but the Paste Plant is now already operated remotely during the night shifts. The provision and management of energy in both fuel and electricity forms is an increasingly important consideration for mines. Pressures from communities, governments and markets are increasing towards more transparent and improved energy management. Combined with the energy-water nexus, where water and energy are closely related in the operation of a mine, this emerging business climate means a more thorough and responsible approach is required for the acquisition and use of energy, as well as the release of emissions. Many of the complexities in potential new ore bodies are borne in remote locations, high altitudes, low grades, arid climates and deep deposits. Each of these challenges affects the successful provision of energy. In combination, such challenges can leave an operation seemingly unviable from an energy perspective, especially when approached from a traditional mining energy feasibility lens. This paper discusses some of the energy alternatives currently available and emerging in the mining industry. Both energy supply and demand options are considered, which can provide a very different energy footprint with the flexibility to address, and potentially overcome, major energy challenges for a mine. The Trident Gold Deposit has been successfully developed by Alacer Gold (formerly Avoca Resources Limited) into a 1.3 Mt/a operation in the space of four years from discovery to first gold pour (2008). The current in situ Resource for Trident is estimated to be 5 900 000 t @ 5.0 g/t for 940 000 ounces at a cut-off of 1 g/t or 2 g/t depending on ore style. Production to date (Alacer and previous owners) is in excess of 500 000 ounces. The deposit lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton, where it is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, midway between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz). Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (Eastern Zone, Western Zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro; and thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed primarily at sheared lithological contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies. The initial interpretation of the Trident Deposit was based on steeply-dipping structures controlling the zones of mineralisation, with much of the targeting and drill-testing aimed at this style of orebody. Subsequent exposure of the orebodies has identified a series of shallow-east dipping mineralised systems (interpreted to be large reverse shears) that at their intersection with the steep-dipping structures cause significant gold enrichment. It is postulated that both orientations are primary fluid pathways with the intersection between the two resulting in zones with significantly high concentrations of gold mineralisation (in excess of 300 000 ounces). This new understanding on ore controls at Trident has identified that the thin lode-style shear-hosted laminated veins are continuous for over 1700 m along strike as they step en echelon down-plunge. In addition, a repetition and periodicity to the intersection between these steep dipping lode-style systems and the shallow-dipping mineralised zones (estimated to be 700 - 900 m down-plunge) has been identified which has considerably increased the down-plunge potential of the Trident Deposit.
