This paper looks at the past, present and not too distant future of grinding mill relining.Since the adoption of autogenous grinding (AG) mills and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills as the primary ore reducing devices in the comminution circuit, plant shutdown frequency and duration has largely been driven by the liner maintenance requirements of these mills.The past 30 years have seen the introduction of many technologies to reduce relining times and frequencies. Advanced relining systems have been developed which include single and twin Mill Relining Machines, capable of placing large (up to 8000 kg) liners, high energy recoilless THUNDERBOLT Hammers, and high capacity Feed Chute Transporters. Despite these advances, today many of the hazards associated with mill relining remain and reline times still vary considerably between mine sites. A sophisticated discrete event simulation program, designed to analyse the mill relining process, has revealed the dominant influences on reline times of crew performance and of the need for safe access to larger segments of the mill.A new generation of advanced and semi-automated technologies is currently being tested that will address these remaining challenges. The rockbolting method of support is employed widely in several countries in different of mines. Hard rock mines use this method extensively. Soft rock mines, such as coal mines, have employed standing supports (steel sets) as the main method, although some countries such as the U.S.A. and Australia have preferred rockbolting. There is increasing interest in extending the rockbolting method in coal mines. The application of rockbolting techniques in an industry which traditionally has not applied such techniques, has required the development of a systematic design approach. This design approach uses extensive monitoring, to asses the viability of the support system in differing conditions. Currently at a number of new and existing mine developments in the U.K., rockbolting is being successfully applied. Although, inevitably some localised geotechnical problems have been encountered and have needed to be taken into account. The effect of faulting on roadway conditions is discussed in this paper and a design approach has been applied using a numerical analysis method, namely the Finite Element Method. The results presented in the paper serve as a useful guide to roadway support designers, and in particular the role played by different bolts in a range of conditions.

The Mt. Sisa Orebody on Misima Island, P.N.G., consists of gold-silver mineralization associated with massive carbonate and amor- phous iron-manganese oxides in fractures and breccia matrix. The orebody forms the north- ern extension of the Umuna deposit. The mineralization lies within the three kilometre strike length of a northwest trending, 300 metre wide, high angle fault zone. The fault zone structure is deeply oxidi- sed, with the manganiferous oxide material resulting from oxidation of carbonate. The wallrocks are metamorphosed basement psammopelites and basic volcanic rocks, exten- sively intruded by microgranodiorite. These are dominantly epidotized and sericitized. The precious metals are associated with anomalous Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, As, Ba, Ga, Sb, and. Mo. Many of the features of the Mt.Sisa mineralization are characteristic of volcanic- hosted epithermal deposits of western North' America. Lithologic and textural gradation is ob- served between the carbonate hydrothermal breccia-fill at Mt. Sisa, and the quartz domi- nated dilational fracture-fill mineralization which forms most of the Umuna deposit to the south. This gradational relationship is ana- logous to that within the Amethyst-OH vein system at Creede, Colorado, where it is shown to be indicative of deposition from laterally migrating fluids.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. From 2003 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A major focus of the investigations is developing strategies to maximise the beneficial use of the limestone that will be mined. Laboratory columns and field test pad investigations have been ongoing for six years examining limestone blends. Trial dumps utilising truck placement and conveyor/stacker placement and blending of limestone and acid generating rock have recently been constructed. In addition, based on initial results, investigations aimed at further evaluating the performance of limestone covers in this high rainfall environment have commenced. A significant finding has been the identification of strong armouring layers on sulfide surfaces within well-blended material and under limestone covers. These layers effectively isolate sulfides and thus progressively slow the oxidation rate to a level where the alkalinity load from the limestone exceeds the rate of acid generating. ARD is controlled and neutral low metal drainage results. The results have demonstrated that although limestone blending is effective, it is necessary to ensure that all size fractions within the blend receive adequate acid neutralising capacity to buffer the potential acidity. Because the sulfur content generally increases and the acid neutralising capacity decreases with decreasing particle size in limestone blends, the amount of limestone required greatly exceeds the stoichiometric requirement. This paper describes the development of limestone blending specifications for potentially acid forming overburden and presents the results of the ongoing limestone cover trials at the Grasberg mine.

Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.

CPeX is a non-ideal explosive performance prediction model. The model takes into account the rate of energy release, the extent of chemical reac- tion and the effect of confinement on energy release. The model resolves the explosive energy into `shock' and `heave' com- ponents as a function of explosive type, hole diameter and rock type. The predictions of the model are compared for a bulk emulsion, and a prill-doped bulk emulsion in soft rock. The predictions, based on calibra- tion of the model with simple unconfined detonation velocity measure- ments, show the significant effect of non-ideality on explosive Performance.

All commercially available zircon sands contain radioactivity sourcing from the decay of trace amounts of contained uranium (U) and thorium (Th). The fine particle size zircons of the Horsham area in the Murray Basin region of Victoria, Australia, contain significantly more (about twice) Th+U than those commercial zircon sands. The marketability of these fine-grained zircon sands is likely to rely on the removal of these radioactive impurities. CSIRO Minerals have been working for some time to develop processes for the removal of the radioactive impurities from zircon. It is generally agreed that it is quite impossible to leach U and Th from zircon, however, the Heat and Leach (HL) process, described in detail in Aral and McDonald (1999), reduces the radionuclide levels significantly. The identified (HL) process aims to leach uranium and thorium selectively from a decomposed zircon. The novelty of the process is that a large part of the leached product can be reconstituted to a low radiation zircon by a subsequent heat treatment. The HL process uses a flux mixture of sodium carbonate and calcium borate to decompose the zircon at relatively low temperatures (900 to 1150¦C) and a weak acid (0.5M HNO3; 80¦C/0.5 h; pulp density ten per cent) to leach the radionuclides selectively. The process leaves the major components (ZrO2 and SiO2) behind with little loss. The HL process for example lowers the U+Th content of a Murray Basin zircon from 1000 ppm to 400 ppm U+Th. Among the radionuclides more U progeny is removed than the Th series radionuclides. This is very significant as the radioactivity of U series is 2.5 times more that from the Th series. Therefore the reduction in the radioactivity level of zircon is more than the reduction in Th+U indicated by XRF analysis. A schematic flow sheet of the HL process is shown in Figure 1. Although the HL process successfully lowers the radionuclide levels in zircon sands, the final product contains significant amounts of sodium (up to 14 per cent Na2O) and small amounts of CaO. By comparison, the sodium content of the commercial zircon sands is in general 2O. Zircon is used mainly as an opacifier in tile glazing where the addition of ten to 15 per cent zircon to a translucent base glaze gives the sanitary white colour to the tile surface. Opacification is the result of the refractoriness of zircon particles at the glaze firing temperatures that is generally around 1050¦C.

Mine closure is a legitimate element of the mining cycle and like mine development involves technical planning, permitting, and finally construction. Closure begins with the mine's operational footprint and transforms the site so that it meets the explicit requirements of the owners and regulators. Implicitly, the closure will increasingly need to meet the requirements of other interested parties such as the local community, workforce, and future land users. Golden Cross is the first modern mine closure in New Zealand. It operated for 6 + years as a mid-size gold and silver mine winning ore from both underground and open pit sources, and processing via a carbon in leach circuit including a cyanide recovery stage prior to tailings disposal. The mine is situated in a sensitive high rainfall environment, and is complicated by the existence of a large ancient landslide underlying most of the tailings dam and waste rock embankment. The regulatory process for mine closure in New Zealand is not clearly understood by operators or regulators alike. The Golden Cross mine was permitted under the Mining Act 1971 and closed primarily under the Resource Management Act. This switch of legislation, the parallel reorganisation of many government departments, and change in societal expectations with respect to long term environmental stewardship during the life of the mine resulted in the requirements of closure being significantly different to the expectations at permitting.

The CSIRO ore classification scheme for Pilbara ores was used as a reference frame to target recognisable ore types/textures with potentially elevated phosphorus content for detailed analysis. Particles of each individual ore texture were separated from a Brockman high-P ore and each class was characterised using methods including XRF, XRD, EPMA and synchrotron-based XAS. Results were then correlated with optical microscopy and hand specimen identification to establish any relevant associated mineralogical phases and/or textures. This represents a more systematic approach to identification of high-P ore components based on particle and goethite type and texture. The information can then provide the basis for more targeted P-removal strategies factoring in the relationship between particle/ore texture and phosphorus deportment

The weathering profile, in arid terrains, is commonly capped by different kinds of hardened crust, whose formation is related to recent or former climates. One may distinguish silcretes, calcretes and the ferruginous (or ferro-aluminous) laterites. the present keynote address mostly deals with the lateritic regolith and, moreover, the influence it has on mineral exploration. The lateritic regolith, also called "cuirasse", is a result of a massive accumulation of Fe (and/or Al) oxides on top of weathering profiles developed during former, probably seasonal humid, climatic episodes, and whose preservation depends on the characteristics of later climates. The total thickness of such weathering profiles commonly exceeds 50 m, with an almost complete substitution of the rock forming minerals by secondary minerals as kaolinite and Fe-Al oxi- hydroxides (hematite, goethite, boehmite, gibbsite). Such an alteration of the primary minerals assemblage is of course accompanied by significant changes of the chemical composition, as concerns major and trace elements. The latter are distributed amongst the main secondary mineral phases or trapped in some primary resistant minerals, but may also be leached, totally or partially. Gold is also affected by lateritic weathering, as shown for instance by morphoscopic and geochemical studies of gold grains collected in the different horizons of the profile, which indicates some dissolution followed by reprecipitation.

The history of the rail and mining industry in Queensland over the past century is inseparable. Indeed it was mining that led to the construction of the line west from Townsville and that shaped its current alignment. The discovery of gold at Charters Towers started construction of the Great Northern Railway west from Townsville in 1879, with completion to Charters Towers in 1882. The line was extended to Hughenden in 1887 and to Cloncurry in 1907 - driven by copper mines both to the south west and the north west of Cloncurry. The mining industryÆs association with funding the construction of rail lines to service their individual mines began in this area when the Hampden and Mount Elliot mine companies agreed to pay 50 per cent of the cost of the line from Cloncurry. The line to Selwyn was completed in 1910. Copper mining saw the construction of many other rail lines in the Cloncurry area in the 1910 - 20 period before copper prices slumped. Included in these lines were the Malbon to Duchess line and the line to Kajabbi and beyond.

The general ranges of validity of some distribution functions are assessed from their behaviour with 119 sets of fragmentation data from bench blasting obtained by sieving. The emphasis is on determining the lower size/passing limit that the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler, Grady and Swebrec functions, and their bi-component versions, can represent with reasonable precision. By fitting these functions to the data using different weights, the accuracy of the fit varies in the different size/passing zones, so that an overall knowledge of the capacity of the function is obtained across the whole size range, from the coarse zone to the fines. Reasonable ranges of use of bimodal Rosin-Rammler and extended Swebrec (all of them five-parameter, bi-component distributions) are, in terms of percentage passing p, 99 > p > 2 per cent (up to 100 per cent for the extended Swebrec), or 90 > p > 0.5 per cent, in which the expected error of the calculated size is below 15 per cent in the extremes of the range, and less than five per cent in most of the central range; maximum errors (ie errors that will only rarely be exceeded) are typically less than 50 per cent in the central range, and up to about 100 per cent in the extremes. Ranges of use for the Swebrec and the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler (three-parameter distributions), with only slightly larger errors than the bi-components, are 100 > p > 5 per cent or 80 > p > 2 per cent. The classical two-parameter Rosin-Rammler can be used in the range 95 > p > 20 per cent or 90 > p > 10 per cent, with expected and maximum errors less than about 15 per cent and 100 per cent respectively.CITATION:Sanchidrián, J A, 2015. Successful heap leaching depends on three major factors: 1. Chemical conditions appropriate for the dissolution of the valuable metal; 2. Contact between the leach solution and the valuable metal particles; and 3. Movement of the leach solution through, and out of, the heap. Given that appropriate chemical conditions can be provided, and the individual particles have sufficient permeability to allow solute/solvent contact, the problem of getting the solution to and from the particles remains. Non-uniform percolation of solution throughout the heap, caused by the presence of fines, is a common problem which occurs, to some extent, with all heap leachable ore. The conventional solution to this problem is agglomeration, which involves the attachment of fine particles to larger particles, effectively modifying the size distribution by preventing the fine particles from acting on their own. While agglomeration must be considered as an extremely effective technique with virtually no limit to its application from a technical point of view, its application is limited by economic considerations. A new technique has been developed which is not only a low cost alternative to agglomeration, but also has the potential for enabling the application of low cost heap and vat leach techniques to a significantly wider range of ores than current practice would suggest. The new technique, known as Electrokinetic Leaching, utilises electro-osmotic flow to enhance percolation through the heap. This paper describes and presents results of the laboratory testing, pilot heap operation and commercial application of Electrokinetic Leaching of a low grade gold ore and a tailings deposit. Comparative cost analyses between conventional and the alternative processing techniques are presented.

Host minerals for gold have been of great interest to exploration geologists and metallurgists for a variety of reasons. The depletion of high grade ores in many parts of the world requires that greater attention be given to the study of host min-erals for gold. Some host minerals have been employed in exploration as traces for gold. They are also essential in the design of extraction processes for treating gold ores.This paper reviews the mineralogy of important gold deposits of Papua New Guinea (PNG), Indonesia and New Zealand and focuses attention on the ore minerals and rock-forming minerals that host gold.

BHP New Zealand Steel produces iron from titaniferous ironsand by a direct reduction process comprising multi- hearth furnaces/rotary kilns/electric iron melters. The electric iron melter is a six-in-line rectangular submerged-arc furnace which takes the partially reduced ironsand (80% metallization) from the rotary kiln and completes the reduction process to produce iron of nominally 3% carbon. As the melter operates at around 1500 ¦C and under very hostile conditions, it is near-impossible to obtain any basic operating parameters such as the velocity and temperature distribution in the slag and in the molten iron. As a first attempt to understand the operating conditions inside the melter, a scaled room-temperature model using wax and water to represent the slag and iron, was constructed. This paper will report on some of the preliminary model results on the temperature distribution.

The Drake-Rivertree area lies in the far north east of the New England district of New South Wales. Drake is some 500 miles north of Sydney by road and 36 miles west of Lismore. Rivertree is situated 24 miles north of Drake.The Drake deposits were first worked in 1878 for gold which occurred in a very fine state in ferruginous gossan but at depth copper ore became more significant. The lodes at Rivertree, discovered in 1887, were worked for silver but mixed sulphides became more prominent in deeper levels.Several mines operated at each centre and each locality smelted its own ore.The mines at both centres were operated sporadically for many years though production was not particularly substantial.A number of the larger mining companies have shown a recent interest in this mining field with special emphasis on the Drake locality.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe two mining centres are situated to the north and south respectively of a belt of Permian marine sediments and volcanics similar to, and probably representing an easterly extension of, the rocks of the Emmaville district further west.E. C. Andrews (1907) recognized two stratigraphic units within what he called the Drake Series. The Lower Division consists of rhyolite flows, tuft's, breccias and agglomerates, followed by trachytic and andesitic tuft's containing cladochonns, thanmopora willcinsoni and other Permian forms.

The mostly submerged New Zealand sub-continent has a complex geological history and an active oceanographic regime that provides opportunities and challenges for offshore mineral exploration. Known deposits include polymetallic Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, polymetallic massive sulfides, phosphatic nodules, titanomagnetitie ironsands and placer gold deposits. Currently exploration interest is high with some 3.5 per cent of the EEZ under prospecting permit or application.   Article 76 of the UNCLOS convention allows coastal states to have sovereign rights over areas of the seafloor that are natural prolongations of the landmass that constitute submerged parts of the continental margin as extended continental shelf. New Zealand has substantial areas of elevated ridges and plateaux beyond the 200 M EEZ that form extended continental shelf. New Zealand has nearly completed a ten year, $44.4 M programme to define its outer extended continental shelf. New Zealand will lodge its outer limits of the extended continental shelf with the UN-appointed Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2006, which if accepted, will enclose ~1.8 million km2 beyond the existing EEZ. Ocean Survey 20/20 is a follow-on marine mapping programme to underpin resource exploration and environmental management of the EEZ and extended continental shelf.

Modem occupational health practice can be described as the fitting of work to the individual and each individual to his job; perhaps a non-traditional way to view occupational health. This two-component description is achieved through the development of programs to implement and monitor specific job procedures, from the monitoring of unwanted exposures to contaminants to the auditing of mine sites. This paper is about such programs. Some attempt must be made to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and several performance indicators which are intended to measure the effectiveness of such a program are offered.

This is evidenced by a decline in the number of skilled teams, who are now centred in fewer locations. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.Trends amongst service providers will be put forward as well as developing options and alternatives. These embrace a whole gamut of agile alternatives in the areas of partnering, alliances, commercial and shared risk models and mutual innovations. These will be discussed with some case studies and suggested approaches.Particular emphasis will be upon brownfield expansions and upgrades which have emerged recently as a preferred lower capital and focused way to achieve best practical outcome at lowest cost. There are a number of specific features of such brownfields projects including the requirement for very close cooperation between the execution team, operators, maintenance and suppliers and a maximum usage of site resources and ingenuity. Often, required investment hurdle rates are high, downtime allowed is minimal and site resources usage is maximised. This requires mutual trust, good planning and high health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) standards and practice. In many ways the practices and skills needed are the exact opposite of the historical ‘big greenfields’ project with which the industry has been geared for more recently.Another developing area has been with innovative commercial models and practices. These have been as a direct result of the more challenging investment criteria being adopted and the relative hunger of service providers. It has become more common to look at these commercial/costing alternatives very early in the project cycle as an essential project tool and not just as a possible option. These commercial solutions cover such alternatives as leasing and rental, deferred payments, build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) and build–own–operate (BOO), whole-of-mine preferred spares and maintenance terms, and aggressive performance targets with real assurance penalties. Once again this requires very close mutual dealings and trust, and sufficient time allocation compared to a conventional approach.Citation:Coleman, R, King, J and Hunter, T, 2016.
