The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has made remarkable strides and has witnessed a suite of achievements over its ~65-year history; especially in the last 15 years, since organised work began for the erstwhile fragmented sampling community (2003). Theory and practice have been very well exposed and disseminated, as witnessed in the successful series of the World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB) events and other dedicated sampling and mining conferences in Australia and South Africa. At this WCSB8 occasion we fittingly devote a section of our conference to celebrate the life and monumental achievement of Pierre Gy, the originator of the Theory of Sampling; a special issue of TOS Forum was recently published to the same purpose. But TOS is most emphatically not a finished work.Here I try to look into the future with a personal view: TOS – what’s next? Commensurate with this objective there is offered some out-of-the-box thinking. The purpose is to try to zoom in on probable additional future aspects of TOS and its application compared to the first 15 years of our common journey. There are bound to be lacunae here-and-there across the vast application horizon delineated, which is as it should be, as this lecture is meant to initiate a broad(er) debate – and readers may agree with all, parts, or none of the topics presented. Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process. Geostatistical methods have become well established in the last two decades for the evaluation of ore reserves in base metal, industrial minerals, coal and gold deposits of the Witwatersrand type. However, there has been considerable debate about the applicability of geostatistical techniques when applied to vein-type gold deposits with hydro or epithermal mineralisation. The main problems stem from a lack of spatial continuity and the highly erratic sample values that characterise these deposits. This paper reviews some of the current geostatistical techniques that are applied to the evaluation of gold prospects.

Macraes Mining Company Limited operates a 2.1 million tonnes per annum gold processing plant at Macraes Flat, Otago. This uses a conventional CIL route to treat oxide ore, and a flotation, grind, CIL route for sulfide ore. This paper describes the design and operation of this process plant.

The Nokomai Gold Mining Project commenced production in January 1992. The Project continues a history of mining in theNokomai Valley which extended from 1863 to 1942. L & M Mining Limited have held interests in the valley since 1980. In 1990 the Nokomai Joint Venture was formed with the Hore family, the owners of Nokomai Station, to mine a large alluvial gold resource in the valley. The mine is located adjacent to the Mataura Brown Trout fishery and required extensive environmental studies prior to granting of permits. The mine is budgeted to work for 20 months, processing 460 000 m3 of wash material. During this period, contract miners, Downer Mining Limited, will move in excess of seven million cubic metres of overburden from the deposit.

Investigations were undertaken to assess the suitability of CSIROflotation methods for improving the efficiency of separation of heavyminerals in the monazite circuit at the Westralian Sands Limitedoperations at Capel, Western Australia. Flotation work was conducted on two plant samples. The first was a high-titanium product containing considerable amounts of zircon and silica as quartz and aluminosilicates, and the second was a low monazite/zircon material containing high levels of silica. A three-stage process including reverse flotation was developed totreat the first sample. In this process monazite, zircon, quartz, andaluminosilicates were selectively concentrated by flotation and screening to produce a titanium-rich product. In the first stage, an acid amine float, monazite, zircon, and some non-zircon silica were recovered and in the second stage, an alkaline amine float using a fluoride activator, more quartz and staurolite were floated. The titanium minerals were thus concentrated in the unfloated fraction. In the third stage, the titanium-rich flotation tail was screened at 250 ¦m to remove the remaining coarse aluminosilicates. In a single pass, the three-stage process yielded a TiO2 recovery of 64.0 per cent with the titanium-rich product assaying 70.3 per cent TiO2.

The Northern Baikal Ni-Cu province is located in Buryatia, south-east Siberia, and geologically is part of the Baikal-Muya volcano-plutonic belt. It is known for numerous PGE-Ni-Cu-bearing mafic-ultramafic intrusions of Neoproterozoic age formed in various geodynamic settings. All these deposits can be regarded as a single Ni-Cu ore cluster located near the Kholodninskoe Pb-Zn deposit, which is ready for mining. In addition, there are less studied, small dyke-like bodies with sulfide mineralisation that formed in a rift setting and may be enriched in Ni, Cu and PGE. Individually, the known bodies are of poor commercial value by their resources, but their close spatial association (<30 km) may make these PGE-Ni-Cu deposits economic in the future. This extended abstract seeks to provide a geological framework of the North Baikal Ni-Cu-PGE province, specifically at the north-eastern Synnyr rift hosting numerous small subvolcanic bodies with Ni-Cu sulfide mineralisation. The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. Mining and metallurgical processing of gold and base metal ores often results in solid wastes and effluents containing high concentrations of arsenic. In addition, arsenic can be released to the atmosphere from gold roasters and base metal smelters. Speciation of arsenic in roaster products, in a stack sample from a copper smelter, in organic soils impacted by smelter emissions, and in an anaerobic effluent treatment system at a smelter site was determined in order to broaden our understanding of the nature and occurrence of arsenic in a wider range of metallurgical wastes. Micro-XANES spectra obtained from iron oxide particles forming in a gold roaster indicate preferential enrichment of As3+ species in maghemite-rich domains and microlayers. In comparison, haematite-rich iron oxide particles are dominated by As5+ species. It appears that maghemite is retarding oxidation of arsenic and its volatilisation during roasting. Arsenic occurs as both As3+ and As5+ species in a stack sample emitted from a Cu smelter, confined to fine-grained secondary product layers accumulated on the surfaces of spherical Cu particles. This is probably resulting from condensation of As species upon cooling following their volatilisation during the combustion process. Soil samples collected at various distances from the Cu smelter are dominated by As5+ species including monomethylarsonic acid and tetramethylarsonium iodide as the organic arsenic species. The presence of reduced As3+ species highlights the importance of organic material influencing the speciation of arsenic and mineralogical transformations taking place within the soil profile. The XANES spectra indicate that arsenic occurs predominantly as aqueous arsenite species in the anaerobic treatment system, contrary to the conventional thinking of As retention by the formation of secondary sulfides.

With the increased focus on the need for more uranium mines, this paper presents the design process currently underway for the development of the Millennium deposit in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. This deposit, located 630 - 750 m below surface, will be accessed by two shafts and will be mined by blasthole stoping methods at less than 500 t/d. Mining grade will approximate two per cent U3O8 and mine life is expected to be six to seven years. The project is a joint venture between Cameco, AREVA and JCU. This paper discusses in detail methods used to predict worker radiation exposures, the methods used to monitor the work environment and procedures unique to the uranium industry necessary to minimise worker radiation exposures.

In recent years there have been many changes in mine ownership due to the on-going rationalisation towards larger mining companies. Larger companies inevitably find it hard to manage small mining operations and in many cases smaller mines do not fit corporate resource, production and profit criteria. Smaller companies are more suited to managing these medium or small scale mines and are tendering for the purchase or lease of mines that larger companies wish to dispose of. In addition to these factors there has also been a trend (especially in Western Australia) for mines to continue operating at ever increasing depths. This in turn has led to more mines operating in high stress environments and experiencing damaging seismicity. Assessing the viability of seismically active mines from a takeover or purchase point of view should involve analysing the risk profile of every aspect on mining that could be affected by adverse seismicity. This includes assessing current and alternative mining methods, mine designs, support systems, extraction sequencing, monitoring and blasting. This paper includes discussion on items that need to be assessed when considering the purchase of seismically active mines, with experience gained from some recent studies in Western Australia. In these cases it was apparent that quantification of previous seismic history on itÆs own was a totally inadequate method of assessing minewide seismic risk potential. A more holistic approach is required, taking into account all aspects of relevant data, all the minewide effects of seismic activity and all possible means of mitigating those effects.

In recent years the production of steel from directly reduced iron ore pellets has expanded rapidly. However, continued growth will depend on an adequate supply of suitable raw materials for the various commercial gaseous and solid reductant processes now in operation. Although at present Australia does not produce pellets primarily for direct reduction, there is an increasing awareness of Australia's potential role as a supplier of high grade ores for export and/or domestic use. The properties and quality requirements of iron ore pellets made specifically for direct reduction (DR) are reviewed and the laboratory techniques and test methods used at the CSIRO Division of Process Technology for the evaluation of potential DR feedstocks are described. At the present time most of the evaluation tests for DR pellets are extensions of those designed for existing blast furnace (BF) burdens. In the case of some physical parameters such as cold compression strength, abrasion index and cold strength after reduction this extension is quite satisfactory. In the measurement of parameters such as reducibility, swelling and sticking tendency, however, it is necessary to develop meaningful standardized tests so that ores and pellets can be ranked for DR performance. To do this, data from the laboratory tests and from operating plants must be correlated.

The status of remote sensing data availability in New Zealand is outlined and discussed. Currently, two multispectral remote sensing satellites are providing regular data over New Zealand; aircraft scanner services are available from Australia.; operational radar satellite services are yet to materialise. The advantages and disadvantages of the various data types are compared and contrasted. Some image processing considerations are outlined.

Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

Hydrometallurgy has a history of over 300 years with copper leachingand cementation having been exploited in Spain as far back as 1670.Since then, hydrometallurgy has become an integral, expanding branch of extractive metallurgy. This paper reviews major developments in hydrometallurgy over thepast century with emphasis on recent commercial developments and their impact on the mining and metals industries. The environment in which these developments has taken place has changed significantly in the past two decades and many factors, often non-technical, have emerged as constraints on the operation of existing plants and the expansion and development of new hydrometallurgical operations. Finally, a number of possible new developments that will shape thefuture of hydrometallurgy in the new millennium are discussed,particularly as they relate to the assimilation of technical advances in other areas of science and engineering. The impact of current trends in the education of hydrometallurgists and the provision of research in support of these future developments is also addressed.

The fast tracked mine development strategy attempts to blend feasibility studies and engineering/commissioning functions into a streamlined process. In this compressed process, environmental issues are difficult to control with respect to the optimisation of operational environmental performance. This paper presents a standard mine development process with specific focus on environmental issues, and contrasts this against Rio TintoÆs recent fast track experiences on the Hail Creek project (Australia), the Baranj project (India) and the Gokwe North project (Zimbabwe).

Mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand has had almost five years of new legislation. The requirement for different consents is a challenging, time consuming, expensive exercise but in most cases the new procedure is working, although the matter of obtaining access to land is still a major issue. Priority is critical. After lodgment of an application for a minerals permit there are many other matters to address such as identifying land owners, occupiers and administrators, preparation of access applications, consultation and preparation of various resource consent applications.
