The only outstanding development in Montana oil or gas fields during 1935 was the extension of the Cut Bank oil and gas field 7 miles southward. This field is now about 20 miles long and 3 to 8 miles wide, with 218 producing oil wells and 39 producing gas wells. Average daily production of the oil field during December, 1935, was about 6700 bbl.; total production for the year 1935 was approximately 2,020,770 barrels. The Cut Bank field in northern Montana is in a flat to rolling glaciated area used mainly for grazing purposes. Oil and gas occurs in sandstones and shaly sandstones in the Kootenai (Dakota) formation of Lower Cretaceous age at depths ranging from 2700 to 3000 ft. Prominent anticlinal or domal structure is not present, but small plunging anticlines occur locally. Strata dip westward from 75 to 200 ft. per mile. The field lies on the western flank of the Sweetgrass arch, a broad gentle upwarp over 150 miles long. Localization of oil and gas appears to be due either to pinching or lensing out of the sandstone beds, or else silting of the sandstones with clay minerals so that porosity becomes low. Within the field offset wells show marked variation in initial production, which suggests that differences in porosity of sandstone is the controlling factor. The gas-producing portion of the field is entirely updip (east) from the oil-producing portion, and the producing horizons are the same. Initial production of oil wells ranged from about 50 to about 200 bbl. per day, and initial open flow of gas wells ranged from about one million to about 37 million cubic feet per day, with an average of 11 million cubic feet. Initial gas pressures were slightly greater than 700 lb. per sq. in. Oil is brought to the surface by pumping. Both rotary and standard churn-drilling equipment are used. In the remaining 14 oil and gas fields but little new activity took place other than the drilling of offset wells and wells in proven territory. Continuation of "acid treatment" of wells in the Kevin and Pondera oil fields led to reconditioning of many old wells and the drilling of a number of new wells within these fields. Acid treatment of the oil-bearing horizon, which is the dolomitized and silicified Madison limestone of Mississippian age, has proved quite satisfactory, and some "bone dry"

Engineering education for the mining industry has been undergoing a gradual change in recent years, to an extent that many employers may not realize. The result of this change is that the new graduate comes to his first employment with very little knowledge that is immediately valuable in operations. He is in fact, simply "half-baked" and needs much education on the job before his schooling will pay out in any significant way. To the employer who fails to recognize this, and fails to give the necessary training to finish the educational job, the modern graduate is likely to be unsatisfying. Moreover, the young fellow's future competence will be impaired. However, to the employer who assumes the educational burden, the effort should pay out as the half-baked products, after a few years, ought to be more useful than their predecessors and should have a greater potential to solve problems or cope with change. The reasons for this development are given below in the foreword to a questionnaire survey circulated by the SME Committee for On-the-Job Training.

RECENT investigations have shown that face-centered cubic metals may deform by twinning. Blewitt, et al' found that at 4.2"K the mode of def~rmation of single crystals of copper changed at large strains and markings formed on (111) planes. Later they- emonstrated by X-ray diffraction and metallography that the markings were twins and showed that favorably oriented single crystals of copper deformed by twinning at 78°K. They also observed twinning in silver and gold deformed at 4.2 and 78°K. Wagner3 obtained evidence for twinning from the peak shape of diffraction lines of silver cold-worked at 78°K, but twins small enough to cause such effects are not likely to be detected metal-lographically. In the work reported here lamellar structures were observed in deformed silver-gold alloys. They appeared to be mechanical twins, but metallography could not establish this conclusively. Their tendency to form depended on strain rate, temperature and composition. Specimens of silver-gold alloys (0 to 83 wt pct Au) were deformed plastically. One set was worked by hammering under liquid nitrogen, at room temperature and at intermediate temperatures. Another set was compressed slowly in liquid nitrogen to the same reductions as those produced by hammering. Tensile specimens (0.015 x 0.120 x 1.5 in.) of various compositions and approximately equal grain size (0.011 to 0.016 cm) were tested at -195°C and at room temperature. In microsections of all specimens deformed by hammering at —195°C thin lamellae appeared, Fig. 1. They were aligned in definite directions in each grain. In some grains they had two orientations. Where lamellae intersected, a displacement was apparent. Near the center of the left margin of Fig. 1 shear has taken place beyond the fully developed intersecting lamella. Many lamellae resembled Neumann bands in alpha iron. They were parallel to one side of triangular etch pits in the matrix (as in Figs. 1 and 2). The individual lamellae were narrow and had little substructure. This suggested that they did not result from concentrated local slip. The shape of etch pits within the lamellae differed from that of pits in the matrix, as can be seen in Fig. 2; this indicated a difference in orientation. Specimens slowly deformed at —195°C contained regions in which the lamellae were clustered. In these specimens some lamellae were bent and presumably had formed before the termination of the deformation. Structures of greater width than the lamellae were also seen.4 More lamellar structures formed on impact than during slow compression to a given reduction. This was true of all compositions. The structures became less abundant with increasing temperature of deformation. None was observed after extension to fracture at room temperature, but they could be pro-

The center of greatest interest was the Crystal field, which was unknown until March, 1935, and is an illustration of the effect of the unknown and unexpected on Michigan oil development. The fields of the state (Fig. 1) produced a total of 15,770,000 bbl. of oil in 1935, or about 5 million more than in 1934. In order to keep up this production 307 new oil wells were drilled, of which 88 were in the Crystal area, which produced 3,600,000 bbl. This field had a rapid development and reached its peak in October. Since that time increasing water encroachment has caused a rapid decline. The pay horizon at the top of the Monroe dolomite is only a few feet thick. Big producers were offset by dry holes or small wells. The discovery well, which was in section 11, Crystal township, Montcalm County, was drilled March 28, 1935. Its initial production was 5000 bbl. per day, and up to Dec. 31, 1935, had produced 350,000 bbl. of oil—dose to one-tenth of the total production of the field to that date. The Beaverton field, which was discovered at the close of 1934, did not develop rapidly. Four small producers were finished in the Dundee lime during the year. West Branch was active and at the end of the year had 97 producers, 72 of which were drilled during 1935. Most of the wells produce from the Dundee lime; a few are finished in the Traverse. The Birch Run field deserves special mention, for it is the one area where consistent production continues to be found in the Berea sand at about 1500 ft. Wells are small, 20 now producing a total of about 300 bbl. per day of oil of fine quality. The old Central Michigan producing area, extending from Nit,. Pleasant through Yost to Porter, continued to be the principal producing area of the state and accounted for 10,370,000 bbl. from 660 producing wells. Ninety-three new wells were drilled in this territory. The Porter field, at the southeast end of this producing trend, was outstanding from the standpoint of production. The old Leaton field of Isabella County added several new producers. Its production was greater than in 1934.

The following have been compiled from information furnished through the courtesy of Dr. W. P. Haynes, of London, and Mr. T. V. Grigorescu of Ploesti, Rumania. Gura Ocnitzei was the most active field during the year, furnishing 40 per cent of the production and 50 per cent of the drilling activity. Extensions to the west in this field were made both by Concordia and Romana Americana. In these new extensions the bulk of the production comes from the Drader member of the Dacian, with an average depth of 1300 m.; the underlying third Meotic at 1700 m. has not been developed yet. In Gura Ocnitzei east no new drilling has been done in 1933, but here declining pressures have led to the extensive use of gas-lift and pumps. Ochiuri saw some small drilling activity, but production declined. Two good wells were brought in by Unirea and Astra at the close of the year. Boldesti continued to be developed on a general plan by the four major companies interested. Production was from the Meotic, which in this dome has been penetrated for 356 m. Reserves have been estimated at about 63,000,000 bbl. An important discovery in this area was the bringing in of Credit Minier No. 1 Harsa to the east of the main field and producing from the Meotic. This well came in during October, 1932, and is now making 1400 barrels. In the Moreni Piscuri field only routine operations have been carried on. The prolific sands are now declining rapidly. Ceptura also saw only routine operations. In the Arcesti field development of the Meotic continues. Seven new wells were brought in during the year and ten were drilling at the close of 1930. The field produced over a million barrels for the first time during 1933. In the other fields only routine operations were carried on. A considerable increase in efficiency of operations was noted during the year. The average drilling time has been reduced, coring programs have been amplified, and much care has been taken in straight hole drilling. The Schlumberger electrical coring apparatus is extensively used. Electric-driven rotaries have been introduced at Gura Ocnitzei. The Moniteur du Pétrole Rouman reports that the index cost of drilling one meter, taking 1929 as a base of 100, has been reduced to 32 in 1933.

The outstanding features in Pennsylvania and New York during the past year were the buying of acreage for water-flooding in other Pennsylyania fields than the Bradford and Allegany districts, the wide adoption and use of the five-spot plan of development and water-flooding in the Bradford and Allegany districts, the discovery of gas production in the Onondaga lime in southwestern New York and the opening of the T. W. Phillips Gas & Oil Co. Fifth Sand pool in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Water-flooding has occurred in many other fields than the Bradford, Pa., and Allegany, N. Y., fields. In some the flood was a natural encroachment of edge water, in others the water was introduced into the productive sand through wells either accidentally or intentionally. Most of these floods have not been commercially successful. There has been some interest aroused in the Clarendon field, Warren County, Pennsylvania, by a new and apparently successful flood and other floods have been begun. Five-spotting in the Bradford and Allegany fields is the plan of water-flood development under which the area to be drilled is laid off in a grid of equal-sized squares with water intakes located at each corner of the squares and oil wells located in the centers of the squares. So far there are two five-spot water floods that are, beyond doubt,, commercial successes. There were 600 acres under five-spot flooding at the end of 1928, as against 150 at the end of 1927. By the end of 1929 there will be a total of between 1200 and 1500 acres five-spotted unless a low market for Pennsylvania grade crude oil develops. An increase of 6000 bbl. in average daily production is expected to accompany this development in 1929. The Belmont-Quadrangle Drilling Corpn. found the Onondaga lime or a higher strata at 3995 ft. north of Bolivar, Cattaraugus Country, N. Y., and a number of miles from any other important gas production. When drilled to 4006 ft. the well yielded 3,500,000 cu. ft. of gas and when shut in 1700 Ib. rock pressure. The one oil pool opened in 1928 was in Buffalo township, Butler County, Pa., in October, when the T. W. Phillips Gas & Oil Co. completed a wildcat well in the Fifth sand at 700 bbl. a day, which by the end of

ROSWELL H. JOHNSON,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-The industry, I think, has suffered very severely from the lack of just such work as has been done by Messrs. Lewis and Beal. I think we owe a great deal to the Bureau of Mines for at last undertaking this much needed work, even though it is so belated. It could have been of very great assistance in so many properties where its usefulness has now passed. I think it is perhaps well to sound a note of caution, owing to the fact that so much of this information was derived from eastern Oklahoma; but with the new bulletin giving the decline for many fields, there will be far less danger of falling into error through assuming too much uniformity. The cumulative percentage curve seems to 'me to be a. particularly splendid idea. It should have a very important -influence, especially as the authors have themselves pointed out several variables that ought to be taken into consideration. The thickness, I think, is going to be an especially important one to work out along the general lines of method that they have advanced. Probably the most surprising thing in the paper is the general rule that the decline of a well is more correlated with its size than with its age. I can't help but think that that generalization, important as it is, is rather rough and will not apply so clearly when we have a larger number of fields before us. Still the generalization, rough as it is, is of very great importance, since the industry has been very largely basing a great many of its ideas on the ignorance of that principle. It leads to certain corollaries that are of great consequence. The first is that the undrilled portion of the property must be appraised on a. different basis from that used for the drilled portion.

SMELTING is a thing essential to the end for which ores are sought, for without it every ore is a useless stone. This art is especially needed by those who, drawn on by hope, have mined ores in large quantities with great expense and effort. For this reason it is worth while to use one's wits and, if ordinary ways should not suffice, to consider how to find new ways of smelting the ores in order to extract the metals and to purge them of their earthiness. For this reason I shall now tell you of blast and other furnaces, and I shall also tell you, in order that you may be warned, that whoever wishes to do this well must first look at the nature and quality of the ore. You will already have had enlightenment on this from the experiments on assaying and with this as guiding star it is necessary to make ingenious structures and to provide for-the other needs as necessary, for one ore requires iron and another lead. Since I have already spoken of these in their own places on their ores, it is not necessary at present that I repeat, but here I wish to speak only of copper ore as a companion of silver and gold, and of where art is most required and where difficulties chiefly appear. For these things a machine must be built that is convenient to a good water supply in order to continue the work more easily. Its wheels should be large and easily moved, constructed in such a way that the force of the water lifts the bellows that are placed at the tuyère to direct the blast inside the furnaces that are to smelt the ores. For this, attention must first be given to the site of the machine, the quantity of water, and its fall; then to the wood for building the machine and for making charcoal; then to the stones that are used for the blast furnaces; then to the provision of good bellows that are wide, long, and full in their sides and made of cloth, for the better these are, the more they quicken the power of the charcoal

THE use of diamonds upon a large scale in drilling rocks, and the substitution to a certain degree of rotary diamond drills for the ordinary steel percussion drills, marks a new era in the art of mining. Since the invention by Leschot of the diamond drill, it has steadily advanced in its utility and range of application, and in the appreciation of miners and engineers. It must be claimed as one of the many gifts of science to the arts ; and it is, in particular, one of the fruits of the scientific education given at the Ecole Centrale, at Paris. Members are all, doubtless, more or less familiar with the construction of the drill and of the machinery by which it is applied in boring. It is, therefore, my present purpose only to direct your attention to some recent marked improvements, made by the American Diamond Drill Company, by which the economy and efficiency of the machines have been increased. Form of Bit. The annular or ring form of the drill-head or bit was, I believe, the earliest; and it is still in use, without essential modification, wherever it is desired to obtain a sample "core" or specimen of the rock traversed. But for mere drilling, regardless of the preservation of a test-core, a solid-head bit is preferred, except for very large holes. Until recently, these solid-head bits were made with a pointed cutting face shaped like an obtuse cone. This form was assumed to be the best, being most in accordance with the experience obtained with percussion drills. It is found, however, that the exact reverse

Previous bench-scale studies demonstrated that a substantial moisture reduction can be obtained by the application of steam to coal filter-cakes, particularly to those containing a limited amount of minus 200-mesh material. Consequently, U.S. Steel's Applied Research Laboratory conducted a study to determine the feasibility of steam filtration of 1/4 in. by 0 coal on a continuous pilot-scale installation in which an Eimco extractor is used. The test results showed that the moisture content of this coal could be reduced to 5.5% at a steam loading of about 175 lb of steam per ton of dry cake. In terms of steam consumption, this loading is calculated to be 1-1/2 lb of steam per lb of water removed. In some tests, only 1 lb of steam per lb of water removed was required. These levels of steam consumption are significantly less than the actual heat requirements of conventional thermal dryers. The satisfactory moisture reductions were obtained at filtration rates of 125 to 186 lb of dry solids per sq ft per hour. However, the proper design of commercial filters should improve the potential rates that can be attained. These results indicate that steam filtration has considerable economic potential for drying 1/4 in. by 0 coals and also has additional advantages over the conventional thermal drying of coal. The results of the previous bench-scale studies and those published by Burton' demonstrated that a substantial moisture-content reduction can be effected by the application of slightly superheated steam to coal filter-cakes, particularly to those containing a limited amount of minus 200-mesh material. Consequently, US Steel's Applied Research Laboratory conducted a study to determine the feasibility of steam filtration of 1/4 in. by 0 coal on a continuous basis. In the continuous process, the dewatering operation on the filter is conducted in stages. In the first, the bulk of the water in the feed slurry is removed by conventional mechanical dewatering on a portion of the filter before the steam is applied. In the second stage, steam is applied to the cake. The steam condenses and releases its latent heat, thereby reducing the viscosity of the remaining cake water; this reduced viscosity then facilitates further drainage and produces a cake of lower moisture content. Because of the availability of feed coal on a continuous basis and since steam was readily available from a low-pressure boiler, the Applied Research Laboratory selected for the test site a coal-preparation plant that cleans Pittsburgh Seam coal. A slurry of table and flotation coal in percentages as they occur normally was used as feed stock. Typical analyses of this slurry are shown in Table I. DESCRIPTION OF FILTER AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES An Eimco Extractor was selected for the evaluation of steam filtration in a continuous process. This unit was chosen because of its availability and its design features that permit relatively simple hood construction, instrumentation, and operation. A photograph of the Extractor is shown in Fig. 1. In the filter a cloth medium is used that travels horizontally and continuously with a grooved, rubber drainage belt. Richard Strong (Oliver Iron Mining Div., U. S. Steel Corp.)—Mr. Waterman states (p. 59, Trans., January 1954): "Core-sludge combining factors have been calculaied for any combination of core-sludge recovery on the basis of several logical assumptions: 1—The sludge sample loses reliability geometrically as sludge recovery drops. 2—The sludge sample should not be used if the percentage of sludge return is less than the percentage of core recovered. 3—A core sample should receive a weighting at least equal to the percentage of core recovery." Assumptions 1 and 2 seem justified at Chuquicamata and most geologists would agree to the validity of assumption 3. However, contrary to the statement quoted above, the core sample does not in general receive a weighting at least equal to the percentage of core recovery when the Chuquicamata methgd is used. Furthermore, the basic Chuquicamata method is identical to the Longyear or relative volume core-sludge assay combining method. Finally, the Chuquicamata method does not, in its present form, reflect true geometric loss in sludge sample reliability according to the relationship L = AR (N-1) The basic equations representing the two steps of the Chuquicamata method can be combined algebraically as follows (using the symbology of the original article except as noted): Vol A + B Assay 2 = ASA = Assay 1 Vol A VolB Core Assay [I] Vol A CA.F + ASA (100 —F) Combined grade =[21 100 Pct where F and (100 — F) are the core and adjusted sludge assay factors from Fig. 3. The true core factor includes not only the factor F from Fig. 3 but also the quantity VolB ------------- (100 — F), which is implicit in the value of Vol A the adjusted sludge assay. This quantity is real and positive for all values of F and core recovery less than 100. Therefore the true core factor is always less than F except when F is equal to 100. If sludge recovery is 100 pct, Eq. 3 can be further simplified as follows: Let F = percentage of core recovered. Let Vol A = Vdh (100 Pct — Pct CR) where Vdh is the total volume of the sampled interval and let Vol B = (Vdh — Vc.) Pct CR where V, is the core volume in the sampled interval at 100 pct core recovery. Then combined grade = Vo V. CA Pct CR- + Assay 1, 100 Pct — Pct CR Vdh Vdh [4] 100 Pct Eq. 4 shows that when sludge recovery is 100 pct the laboratory sludge assay receives significant weight in the Chuquicamata method, even at 100 pct core recovery. The maximum weight assigned to the laboratory sludge assay depends on drillhole size, as follows: Eq. 4, with suitable changes in symbology, is identical to Royce's formula 8,' which is a statement of the Longyear or relative volume method of combining core and sludge assays. If Mr. Waterman's assumption 3 is of paramount concern to the geologist, the Royce method (for core recoveries of 60 pct and above) or a method employing the percentage of core recovered as a core weighting factor are the only recognized methods known to the writer which achieve the desired result. A modification of the latter method embodying Mr. Waterman's assumptions 1 and 2 would result from applying the factors from Fig. 3 directly to the laboratory core and sludge assays.

The electrolytic formation of y hydride in thin foils of Ti-5Al-Z.5Sn alloy and four Ti-A1 binary alloys has been studied by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. Two orientation relationships have been found: THE adsorption of hydrogen by titanium alloys from aqueous solutions has been widely reported. This can occur, for example, in both alkaline' and acidic2 pickling baths, in chemical polishing374 and electro-polishing Solutions,3,4 during cathodic polarization5" and under certain corrosion conditions,7,8 Etching reagents may also produce visible precipitates, sometimes after an aging period.9 During an investigation into the stress corrosion susceptibility of a titanium alloys by thin foil electron microscopy many observations have been made of hydride precipitation which has been deliberately promoted by techniques that are described below. The characteristics of hydride precipitation are reported and the observed crystallographic orientation relationships are discussed with reference to distortion in the titanium lattice created by the presence of the hydride. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE One grade of commercial titanium and five alloys were examined. Their composition and hardness values are shown in Table I. All the materials were in the form of thin sheet, 0.05 to 0.065 cm thick, which had been annealed after cold rolling. Foils suitable for transmission electron microscopy were made in two ways: a) by chemical polishing; and b) by elec-tropolishing. The solution used for chemical polishing was a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. During this polishing specimens were manually moved up and down in the solution. The reaction was veFy rapid, specimens thinning to foil thickness (2000A) in 5 min. Since chemical polishing solutions tend not to cause hydride contamination if they are kept cool3 no attempt was made to prevent the solution from becoming hot during the thinning operation. Electropolishing was performed at -30° C with a mixture3 composed of 295 cu cm methyl alcohol, 175 cu cm n-butyl alcohol, and 30 cu cm perchloric acid with an applied voltage of 40 v after chemically thinning specimens to approximately 0.017 cm thickness in a cool solution of 44 pct HF, 40 vol H2O2, and water in the volumetric ratio 1:6:3. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1) Ti-5A1-2.5Sn Alloy. The Ti-5A1-2.5Sn alloy was severely contaminated by hydrogen during the chemical polishing. Foils obtained in this way contained large amounts of the y hydride phase. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. l. The laths were identified as the hydride phase by selected-area diffraction of a large number of foils examined in a tilting stage that could be turned through 40 deg. Using the lattice spac-ings of the alloy obtained by X-ray diffraction as a standard the a value of the hydride was determined fromo the electron diffraction patterns to be 4.38 to 4.40A. The accuracy of this figure is only about ±2 pct. Further evidence of the identification was obtained by vacuum annealing chemically polished foils of the alloy at 500°C. Introduction of continuous mining machines in the late 1940s created a new production bottleneck in room-and-pillar sections-the shuttle car. While continuous miners could cut and load coal at a nearly constant rate, the mining sequence was repeatedly interrupted as fully loaded shuttle cars changed places with empty ones. This wait-for-the-shuttle delay period forced the coal industry to reassess the shuttle's batch-type procedure with an eve toward continuous haulage systems that would allow uninterrupted coal flow from face to portal.

IN recent publications1-5 the existence and behavior of subgrain boundaries in high-purity metals has been clearly brought to light. Lacombe and Beaujardl by means of special etching methods disclosed in polycrystalline sheets of aluminum the existence of substructures differing in orientation by small amounts (about 1/4"). Boundaries of these structures at relatively high temperatures had the remarkable property' of moving about while the ordinary boundaries remained stationary. Cahn2 also observed substructures in bent and annealed single crystals of aluminum, zinc, magnesium, and rock salt. The position of subboundaries could be explained in terms of a dislocation mechanism of polygonization in which dislocations move into lines at right angles to the bent glide planes thereby relieving elastic stresses in these planes. Guinier and Tennevin8,6 disclosed the further interesting feature that polygonized structures coarsened significantly upon prolonged annealing. Somewhat similar subgrain phenomena have been observed in silicon iron of commercial purity. Although some evidence for the development of macro-mosaic structures in silicon iron already has been reported by one of the authors6,7 under the phenom-enological term "crystal recovery," much better evidence recently has been obtained due to improved etching techniques. In addition, phenomena regarding structural changes have been uncovered. The present investigation is divided into three parts: (1) The phenomenon of Laue spot sharpening on annealing cold-rolled crystals, (2) the phenomena of polygonization and subgrain coarsening The material used in the present investigation was high-grade commercial silicon iron sheet of nominal composition, 3.3 pct Si, 0.004 C, 0.011 P, 0.010 S, 0.04 Mn, 0.01 Al, 0.04 Cu, 0.01 Sn. Large single crystals of this material Were prepared for cold-rolling or bending as scheduled. Cold-rolling of 12 pct was carried out on a laboratory 8-in, diam rolling mill. Individual specimens were cut from the deformed crystals, and the cut edges were deeply etched prior to annealing. Laue photographs were made using 40-kv tungsten radiation. The technique used to disclose the various subboundaries was an electropolish and electroetch in a bath of chrome-acetic acid.' The anodic polishing done at 22 v was immediately followed by etching at a reduced voltage, which was dependent upon the nature of the subboundaries. Phenomenon of Laue Spot Sharpening on Annealing Cold-Rolled Crystals Fig. 1 gives the initial and final orientations of the specimens cold-rolled 12 pct. Each specimen was annealed at a temperature and for a time which caused significant structural changes as evidenced by alterations in Laue patterns. Representative Laue patterns and micrographs showing the essential changes are given in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The essential points to be derived from these illustrations follow: 1. Annealing at 950°C clearly develops a substructure with the orientation of the cold-rolled specimen. 2. The subboundaries formed obviously separate regions of nearly the same orientation. Some of the subboundaries appear as a sequence of dots similar to those observed in aluminum by Lacombe and Beaujard,' but whether this is due to extremely small differences in orientation is not known at present. 3. The substructure coarsens upon prolonged annealing. 4. Prolonged annealing also causes a decrease in orientation spread according to Laue spot sharpening'

THE first commercial production of bituminous coal in the United States was in 1820, and formation of acid in the areas from which the coal was removed began at that time. Thus it is 130 years since the development of mine acid began. The coal operator has had to deal with the acid water produced in his mines, and his losses from corrosion of pumps and equipment have been tremendous. Other industries and the public have been forced to spend large amounts for their water requirements because of the acid discharge from the mines. There are many contradictions in the literature on this subject probably because of variations in the analytical procedures followed and differences in the methods of calculation and reporting. The opinions previously expressed may be summarized as follows: The production of mine acid has been looked upon as a simple chemical reaction wherein the oxygen of the air has reacted with pyrite to produce ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid. This reaction appears in many chemistry texts and generally has not been considered worthy of further study. Since the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration or activity was developed and expressed in terms of pH, indicator and instrumental methods for pH determination have become readily available, making it natural to think of it as a measure of acid content. Special purpose analytical methods applicable to potable waters, sewage effluents, and boiler waters, based in general upon the determination of what may be regarded as impurities, have been applied to more concentrated solutions constituting mine discharges, without reference to the fact that these specialized procedures had been developed to serve as operating guides for water-treatment plants. Increased flow was thought to result in a dilution of the acid produced. When the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a fellowship at Mellon Institute, the first approach to the problem was to review some of the chemical reactions involved and their relation to acid production. Since the sulphates of iron were among the principal constituents of coal-mine drainage, the first studies were based upon solutions of chemically pure ferrous and ferric sulphate. These are both neutral salts, that is, the iron and the sulphate are equivalent, but they produce acid reactions in water solution because as salts of strong acids with weak bases, they hydrolyze to form acid solutions. Boron nitride, BN, has been identified in boron low-carbon steels by means of light microscopy, electron microscopy and diffraction, and chemical analysis. This boron nitride is responsible for strain aging suppression in these steels through the removal of nitrogen from solution; however, small oxidizing potentials which result in deboronization In the austenitic temperature range also result in boron nitride decomposition and the subsequent occurrence of nitrogen strain aging. THE addition of boron to low-carbon steels is an effective means of eliminating the detrimental effects of strain aging;',' however, the mechanism by which boron suppresses strain aging has not been established. In studying the effect of heat treatment on the strain aging of boron low-carbon steels, Butler3 found that no detectable nitrogen was present in the ferrite solid solution after various heat treatments even though the total nitrogen analyses of the steels were 0.003 pct N. Apparently the function of boron in suppressing strain aging is the removal of nitrogen from solution to form a relatively stable second phase. A clue to the identity of this phase was found by Speight4 who extracted from an aluminum-killed boron steel an acid insoluble residue which contained boron and nitrogen in proportions corresponding to the compound, BN. Shyne and Morgan5 found that the addition of nitrogen to a hardenable boron steel lowered its hardenability in a manner which suggest-d the presence of nucleating particles (presumably BN) even at high austenitizing temperatures. Although this indirect evidence for the presence of boron nitride in boron steels has been found, the compound was not identified metallographically as a separate phase in these steels. Because boron has an affinity for oxygen comparable to that of silicon,5 boron steels must be thoroughly killed with aluminum in order to prevent the reaction of boron with oxygen.7 The affinity of boron for oxygen also is demonstrated through the ease of deboronization of a boron steel in an oxidizing atmosphere. Digges, Irish, and Carwile8 found that a mixture of wet natural gas and air caused both deboronixation and decarburization of a boron steel at 1900°F. The boron content rose at the surface of the steel due to the formation of boron oxide. Shyne and Morgan9 encountered deboronization at much lower oxygen potentials; loss of boron occurred in steels treated at 1750o F under argon purified to 0.0014 pct 0, even though decarburization did not occur. Boron oxide, B2O3, is much more stable than the nitride, BN, as is indicated by the standard free energies of formation at 980oC: -235 kcal per mol of B2O3 (liquid) and -28 kcal per mol of BN (crystal). It is evident that the oxygen potential must be kept low in the presence of BN in order to prevent its decomposition and the subsequent formation of B2O3' The purpose of the work described in this paper was to identify the nitride phase responsible for the removal of nitrogen from solution and to study its stability under oxidizing conditions. IDENTIFICATION OF BN In order to identify the phase containing boron and nitrogen, several alloys high in boron and nitrogen were made up in a small vacuum furnace. In alloys 3 and 4, Table I, electrolytic iron was used as a charge material. Boron additions were made in the form of 18 pct B ferro-boron after the iron was molten. D. R. MITCHELL*—The Chairman mentioned that we have had many papers on cleaning of fine coal and treatment of wash water solids. There are, of course, two reasons for that. One is that we have legislation, particularly in the east. that is making us go into these things whether we want to or not. It just so happens at the present time that I have four plants that are going up under my general direction, three new and one rehabilitation job, and in all of them, we have these problems. Therefore, I was very happy to be able to listen to these papers, because some of the things that are in them are going to help me solve some of the problems that I am facing. Of course, the second reason why we are concerned about fine coal recovery is the fact that coal has become a luxury item in a good many places, particularly in the anthracite region, so that we cannot afford to have it go to waste like we did in former years. There is a third minor reason, and that is that we are finding how to handle and use the extremely fine sizes that we did not know how to use in former years. Now, I have a couple of questions that I would like to ask. First, what are the maximum solids that you could have in a pulp going to one of these launder screens? I realize that it would be for anthracite. Second, of course the life of these screen surfaces is not very long— with brass or bronze, I believe it is a week, and with stainless steel, a month. Would it be possible to use screen surfaces like the Bixby-Zimmer round rod for the small sizes and possibly increase the life? Have you experimented with that? Another point that I would like to bring out, both in Mr. Parton's paper and in some of the others, in studying cyclones and any settling apparatus where we use orifices, the life of the orifices is very short, and that is a problem that still has to be solved. INTRODUCTION Tochibora Mine belonged to Kamioka Mines, which are located in Gifu Prefecture, the cen- tral part of the Japanese main island, has occupied the important position as a main source of silver, lead and zinc for the smelter of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd.. The annual production of crude ore goes up to about 1 mil- lion metric tons with average grades of 20g/t Ag. 0.31% Pb, and 4.18% Zn. For the last 20 years, the mine has struggled with the depressed zinc metal price in yen and the escalation of operating cost, especially la- bour cost. For instance, prices of commodities and labour cost have been raised 8 times and 14 times respectively during this period. On the other hand, total operating cost has been con- trolled to increase 4.5 times. The productivity of the mine has been increased 4 times by means of improvement of individual works and adoption of perfectly mechanized trackless mining system to reform the mining method. Some improvements are presented as follows; Today, drifting is carried out by the tunnelling crew which consists of 9 operators equipped with 5 Mobile-Jumbos, 2 LHD's and a jeep for carrying and loading ex- plosives. In order to get the high utilization of these machines, each crew manages systematically and continuously adjacent 15 faces under the direction of a forceman. As a result, we have accomplished high advance of drift. Furthermore, raising is carried out by a set of the raise-borer in case of long raises like ore- passes and also by the stage blasting method in case of short ones like slot-cuts. Generally speaking, the sublevel stoping method is considered to be one of the best methods for various respects; high productivity, low cost, easy grade control and safety. This method has been introduced in Tochibora Mine since 1950 and is now widely applied to lodes that could not be mined before by this method be- cause of the shapes of them and the conditions of their country rock. Now we are convinced to be nearly accomplished for our method. This report presents some examples of the standard sublevel stoping method and its variations which are practised at the mine. STANDARD SUBLEVEL STOPING Up to 1979 since 1950 when this method was first applied at the mine, 17 million tons of crude ore have been produced by this method, which amounted to 55% of the total production of the mine. During three decades, the productivity has been increased considerably by means of trackless mining system using large-sized machines and etc.. In other words, mining efficiency has been increased from 20 tons/man.shift to 100 tons/man.shift at large stopes. Formerly undercutting was carried out above the drawing drift by jack-legs and small scrapers and then several cone-shaped glory holes were made by stopers between the undercut level and the draw level. But now, a undercut drift is driven in parallel with the haulage drift at the same level of it. And at the undercut drift, drilling upward is carried out by a large-sized machines like the fan drill in order to extract the broken ore directly at the drawing drift connected with the haulage drift. Simplification of the work as well as utilization of large- sized machines enables to get higher productivity. But if the deposit is comparatively wider and the broken ore around the middle part of the deposit cannot be extracted, several drawing drifts are driven to the deposit and in order to minimize dead ore at the final stage of operation, the
