Lufthansa flight 497 roared down the runway and climbed rapidly through the early morning mist hanging over Pudahuel airport and the city of Santiago, Chile, into the brilliant sunlight above the clouds. As the plane banked onto course for Lima, Peru, we got what was possibly our last look at the beautiful snowclad mountains that ring Santiago. To the northeast was the massive hump of Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Southern Hemisphere, wreathed in clouds and virtually looming over Rio Blanco, the new mine put into production by Cerro de Pasco just one short year before. Almost a thousand miles to the north lay the massive open pits of Chuquicamata and Exotica, and a little closer to Santiago the El Salvador mine. Behind to the southeast, clinging to the steep slopes of the Andes, was the large and awe-inspiring El Teniente mine at Braden. These mines, once the bastions of such companies as Anaconda and Kennecott, had a new owner-the Government of Chile. On the plane were a number of people who had spent a large part of their lives in Chile operating these mines and plants, and who now were suddenly faced with the necessity of starting new lives somewhere else. To them, this was their last look at the country which not too long ago was their home, a bittersweet moment of reminiscence and a time for questioning what the future held.

HAVE been asked many times by financial men in New York as to the best way of securing an interest or control of a gold mine in Canada. It must be understood at the start that prospectors and early owners will not sell a 100 per cent interest. They not only retain from 10 to 25 per cent interest, depending upon the work done, but usually demand more or less cash to reimburse them for expenses. These conditions are accepted by Canadian capital and operating mines looking for new properties. The winter is not a hindrance to work but may be of great advantage. The overburden of soil and gravel is generally wet and most difficult to trench in the summer time especially if at all deep. The snow also permits easy transportation of freight. Properties distant from rail transport all of their machinery and supplies during the winter months.

SELECTIVE SERVICE must meet three important demands for man power: (1) Activities concerned with production of war goods. (2) The armed forces. (3) Civilian activities and institutions the continuance of which are essential to maintaining the structure of our American democracy. In the above enumeration of demands I have placed everything, including most of our most prized possessions and activities, after the demand for men for war production and the armed forces. To establish an order between the latter two is difficult. For the time being, at least, the Selective Service policy is to make sure that we avoid the risk of "too little and too late." No soldier, sailor, or marine should be sent from these shores to risk his life without the assurance of having a gun, clothes, food, and medical supplies. Therefore, the premium is now being placed on man power for war production and in our process of selection no stone is left unturned to see that our agencies are fully informed of the needs of war production. Our procedures set up recourses for employers of war-production man power so that their activities need not be disrupted, at least not until they have had time to train replacements.

THE Colorado Plateau uranium province is in a mining boom rivaling the most colorful days of the early West. The application of scientific skills and the use of modern and novel mechanical equipment, however, is unique. No metal has ever received such concentrated effort from geologists and mining engineers. Moreover, no other metal has had the variety of tools available for finding and mining ores. Radiation detection equipment, bull- dozers, truck-mounted wagon and core drills, jeeps, airplanes, helicopters, tractor loaders, self -propelled 3-wheeled dump cars, front-end loaders and fleets of modern trucks are some of the present-day tools of the uranium prospector and miner. Because uranium is so vital to our national defense, the Atomic Energy Commission has offered many incentives for its mining. Through a series of circulars, the AEC has established base price schedules and various incentive payments. The incentive payments for acceptable ores from domestic mines are: (1) a guaranteed base price of $3.50 per Ib for ores assaying 0.20 pct U3O8 and more; (2) premiums based on grades above 0.20 pct U3O8 as for example, ores assaying above 0.50 pct U3O8 receive $1.00 per lb premium; (3) a development allowance of 506 per Ib of U3O8 contained in ores assaying over 0.10 pct U3O8 (4) an ore haulage allowance of 64 a ton mile for a maximum of 100 miles; and (5) an initial production bonus which may amount to as much as $35,000 in addition to all other payments. The producers have been guaranteed this policy until Feb. 28, 1957. The other four will continue until April 1962.

BaCKOFEN, Avery, and Turner have shown"2 that the large tensile elongation in superplastic metals is correlated with a high strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress. At present, the reported superplastic materials are complex eutectic or eutectoid systems with a large solubility range in at least one of the terminal phases. This note describes the behavior of a solid-solution alloy (at 22°C)5,= Sn-1 wt pct Bi, which has been processed in order to produce a fine grain size.2,3,6 The chill-cast, 1/2-in.-diam ingot was homogenized for 1 week at 130°C, extruded at O°C to 0.083 in. diam, quenched within 15 sec, and stored at -196°C. Samples were warmed to room temperature 16 hr prior to mechanical testing or metallography. During tension testing at room temperature, it was found that the flow stress reached a steady-state value which depended on the imposed elongation rate and was independent of strain to an error of about ±5 pct. In Fig. 1 is plotted log a vs log e where a is the measured steady-state flow stress and i the imposed strain rate. These quantities were calculated using "instantaneous" area and length to an accuracy in the sample diameter of ±5 x 10-4 in. The log a-log 1 curve is sigmoidal. The strain-rate sensitivity, which may be given by d log old log 6,' has a maximum value of about 0.48 between i = 5 x 10-4 and 5 x 10-3 per min. The value is well above frequently measured values for metals at creep temperatures (0.1 to 0.3) and comparable to the rate sensitivity for Pb-Sn solder: which has been shown to be superplastic.2,3 Note, however, that below or above the strain rate of 10-3 per min the rate sensitivity of Sn-1 pct Bi decreases and at high rates is more nearly like that of conventional metals. The grain size of this material is relatively uniform, Fig. 2, and may be specified by an average linear intercept i.' Grain growth occurs at room temperature but after 16 hr, L = 5. Tensile elongation was measured on finer-grain-size specimens, which had been at room temperature 15 min prior to testing. After 15 min, the samples are fully recrystallized. Three strain rates, 5 x 10-3, 10-2, and 2.5 x 10-2 per min, were employed for which the measured elongations varied from 425 to 500 pct. These results would seem to justify the term superplastic, applied to this alloy, although the ductility is inferior to that of the Sn-Bi eutectic.3 The Sn-1 pct Bi alloy, which is a single-phase material with equiaxed, fine grains, is an excellent one on which to make an estimate of the Nabarro-Herring9 creep rate. According to the model of Avery and Backofen2 a substantial part of the deformation must be accomplished by N-H creep in the strain rate-temperature regime in which d log a/d log 1 = 0.5. The maximum N-H creep rate is given by9 L2kT where v is the atomic volume and D the self-diffusion coefficient. For this test v = 3.O x 10-23 cu cm, D = 1.4 e-23,300/RT = 2.5 x 10-l7 sq cm per sec,7 L = 5x 10+4 cm, T = 295°K, and a = 2000 lb per sq in. = 1.38 x 10' dyne per sq cm. The calculated creep rate is E= 4 x 10-11 per sec which may be compared with the measured creep rate at this stress, Fig. 1, of 6.7 x 10-5 per sec. The N-H creep rate is seen to be negligible. Earlier consideration2 of this question was in error because incorrect diffusion coefficients were used. The assistance of R. R. Russell in metallography is acknowledged gratefully.

Quartz cannot be floated with potassium amyl xanthate as collector at any pH. Complete flotation is achieved with certain minimal additions of amyl xanthate and Pb from pH 5.8 to 8.5 and with amyl xanthate and Zn from pH 7.5 to 8.1. The active species of these metal ions responsible for activation are shown to be PbOH and ZnOH No flotation was effected when Cu and Mg were added as activators. Previous work1,2,3,4,5,6,7 has shown that quartz may be floated in the presence of sulfonate or soap when the following two criteria are met: 1) some portion of the added metal ion has hydro-lyzed to its first hydroxy complex, and 2) a precipitate of the metal-collector has formed. Since sulfonate and soap, two substantially different anionic collectors, conform to these criteria, this phenomenon may well be expected to be of a general nature. In this view then, it would appear that any anionic collector, including xanthates, should also float quartz when these two criteria are met. The object of this paper is to demonstrate the conditions under which quartz will respond to flotation in the presence of potassium amyl xanthate. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Quartz was prepared by leaching the sized sample (48 x 150 mesh) with HC1 until no iron could be detected in the leach liquor. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in the investigation. Potassium amyl xanthate was selected as collector. Purification of this reagent was effected with the following method: 1) a laboratory sample of potassium amyl xanthate was dissolved to saturation in hot ethyl alcohol and filtered several times while still hot, 2) the filtrate was cooled, during which time potassium amyl xanthate crystallized out of solution; the xanthate was then separated from the solution by filtration, 3) the amyl xanthate was dissolved in fresh hot ethyl alcohol and filtered, 4) step (2) was repeated, 5) the crystalline potassium amyl xanthate was washed with ethyl ether five times, and 6) the xanthate was dried for 24 hours under continuous vacuum. Inorganic impurities are insoluble in hot ethyl alcohol whereas dixanthogen is soluble in ethyl ether. Five-gram charges of 48x150 mesh quartz were conditioned for 3 min in 125 cc of solution containing the reagents and were floated with the small-scale cell and procedure described in previous papers.478 Reagent grade HCl and NaOH were used for pH adjustment, while reagent n-amyl alcohol was added as frother. Frother addition is necessary with this technique, but it should be mentioned that data, similar to those shown in Fig. 2 for 1 x10-4 mole per liter Pb++ and 1 X 10-4 mole per liter AX-, were also obtained with a Hallimond cell in the absence of frother. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Clean quartz could not be floated with amyl xanthate at any pH. Flotation was achieved under certain conditions, however, when various metal ions were added to the system. The activating ions used were lead, zinc, copper and magnesium, added as reagent grade chloride salts. Lead as Activator: The effect of Pb++ as activator was examined at five different additions of amyl xanthate (Fig. 1, 2 and 3). When 1x 10-5 mole per liter xanthate was added in the presence of 1 x 10"4 mole per liter Pb ++, no flotation was obtained at pH 6.5 or below, while a recovery of about 60% was effected at pH 7. When the pH was increased to 7.8, no flotation was again obtained, Complete depression was noted from pH 7.8 to about 10, at which point a recovery of about 30% was achieved. At about pH 11, the precipitate of lead amyl xanthate which was present below this pH dissolved and complete depression occurred. When 2.5x 10-5 mole per liter xanthate was added with the same lead addition, no flotation was obtained at pH 5.8 and below, whereas a recovery of

In 1948 when the U.S. Bureau of Mines began the investigation of domestic monazite placers for the Atomic Energy Commission, deposits of this type amenable to large-scale operations were unknown in the U. S. Intensive search for such deposits had not been carried out in the past. Problems to be met included scarcity of men with placer experience and need for development of new exploration, evaluation, and analytical procedures. As a result of the exploration program three dredges have gone into operation in one area in Idaho and another dredge is operating in South Carolina. Search for Deposits In the search for areas to be investigated for monazite, the first step was a thorough study of all available literature reporting occurrences of the mineral. Initial work was guided largely by many reconnaissance reports prepared by the U. S. Geo- logical Survey and the AEC. As the work progressed many new deposits, not mentioned in the literature, were called to the attention of USBM engineers by prospectors who had noted the presence of the yellow, heavy sand while prospecting for placer gold. Every prospector was given an attentive ear.

This paper describes a technique which permits visual observation of oil displacement processes througlrout the interior of a porous structure as thick as 2 in. A model having glass walls is filled with finely powdered glass. Such a model becomes completely transparent if the powdered glass pack is saturated with an oil having the same refractive index as the glass. When water or gar, with a refractive index different from that of the oil (glass) is injected, the model becomes opaque in the space occupied by the water (gar). visual observation and photography of these displacement processes are thus rendered possible. The following processes have been studied: (I) displacement of oil by water (linear drive) in a homo-geneous formation and in a stratified formation, (2) water flooding (five-spot well pattern), (3) solution gas-drive process, and (4) oil-bank formation. INTRODUCTION Most of the scaled model experiments heretofore carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amsterdam, have been done in steel containers, in which oil-saturated sand packs represented the oil-bearing formation. In such experiments, for instance those on the displacement of oil by water, the cumulative oil production was measured as a function of the cumulative water injection. In order to interpret the measured production data, a need has for some time been felt for a means of observing visually what happens in the course of such experiments. Some information of this kind was obtained earlier by observing the water-oil distribution in various cross sections of the sand after the conclusion of the experiment.' However, the technique used did not guarantee that the fluid distribution remained undisturbed. Moreover, the procedure was somewhat elaborate and the information obtained limited. Therefore a new technique has been developed, which is described below. DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE AND APPARATUS Glass models simulating part of an oil reservoir are filled with ground Pyrex glass of a specific grain size, representing the porous structure of the prototype. Before an experiment is started, the porous formation has to be saturated completely with an oil having exactly the same refractive index as the Pyrex glass powder. All light-scattering surfaces of the glass grains become invisible and the formation is then transparent. If the oil is displaced by another fluid (e.g. by water in a water-drive experiment, or by gas liberated from the oil in a solution gas-drive experiment) the formation becomes opaque in the region where the oil is expelled from the rock.* The back of the apparatus is painted black and illumination is from the front; therefore, in the photographs of the experiments, the oil-bearing formation appears black, whereas the water- or gas-invaded areas are white.

A correlation has been developed for calculating the phase behavior of, gas-condensate systems at reservoir conditions. The correlation is based on the principle of corresponding states and has been coded for an IBM 7094. Experimental K-values were determined for several gas-condensate systems at reservoir conditions to evaluate various semi-empirical parameters of the correlation. The approximate range of application of the correlation is 150 to 300F and 1,500 to 6,000 psi. INTRODUCTION The rapid development of digital computers during the past several years has made feasible the calculation of hydrocarbon phase behavior by methods based on rigorous thermodynamic principles. Good correlationsl have been developed for low to moderate pressures, but these techniques have not yet been extended successfully to reservoir fluids at high pressures. Consequently, the determination of phase behavior of oil and gas systems at reservoir conditions is still based almost entirely on generalized data correlations or on experimental studies of the fluid in question. While these methods have been used successfully many times, they do have inherent limitations that restrict their applicability. Generalized correlations, such as the NGShlA K-charts, are limited to the range of pressure, temperature and components for which the data were determined. The accuracy of these correlations is often questionable because the effect of total system composition is not well defined. Experimental studies offer a reliable method for determining phase behavior, but usually the studies are costly and time consuming. Recently, Leland and co-workers presented a new approach to calculating phase behavior from the principles of corresponding states.6-8 Corresponding states methods determine the thermodynamics properties of a given system by comparison with a reference substance whose properties are known. The accuracy of this approach depends on close chemical and structural similarity between the reference substance and the system in question and between components within the system itself. For high accuracy, it is usually necessary to correct for chemical and structural dissimilarities. In principle, however, the corresponding states method should be no less accurate at high pressures than at low pressures, provided reference substance properties are known. This paper describes an empirical modification of the basic correlation proposed by Leland, et al.6 for the specific purpose of calculating the phase behavior of gas-condensate fluids at reservoir conditions. The modified correlation, which has been programmed for an IBM 7094, may be used for either approximate or precise determination of fluid behavior depending on the amount of analytical and, experimental data available for the system. BASIC THEORY The basic theory of the corresponding states phase equilibria correlation was first published by Leland, Chappelear and Gamson.6 Subsequently, Leland, Chappelear and Leach published methods for improving the accuracy of the original theory.7-9 The aim of the correlation is to calculate the K-value of each component of a given system as a function of pressure, temperature, and over-all composition, where Once the K-values are known, the phase behavior may be determined directly by an appropriate flash calculation. The basic equation for calculating component K-values was taken from the work of Joffe. 4 For any component i of a mixture, the K-value is given by

Discussion of the paper of K. Huessener, (Trans., vol. 53, pp. 402 to 4333, and of the papers of Linn Bradley, H. D. EGbert and W. W. Strong, pp. 303, 319. R. J. WysoR, So. Bethlehem, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*). —At our plant (Bethlehem Steel Co.), we have had several Bradshaw burners under course of construction and erection for some time, but up to the present we have not had opportunity to put them in service. I regret that I can not take part in the discussion with some actual results from these burners. Mr. Huessener properly emphasizes the importance of obtaining the highest combustion temperature practicable in boiler practice, which demands a near approach to perfect combustion conditions. The ideal burner is the one which, while meeting the various mechanical requirements, fulfills the above condition under a wide range of gas pressure. The question as to the relative value of hot raw gas and cold washed gas for boiler use is a very interesting one. I think that in the past the importance of low temperature of washed gas sometimes has been overemphasized. Mr. Huessener has pointed out that so far as temperature is concerned, no advantage accrues in washing gas below 100" F. In many plants, there is a notable operating economy in using furnace cooling water, which is appreciably warmer than the supply water. However, in a given type of washer, other conditions being constant, the lower the exit gas temperature the lower will be the dust content; this is equivalent to saying that the more washing water is used, other conditions being constant, the lower will be the dust content of the exit gas. For each type of washer there is a certain desired average temperature difference between inlet water and exit gas, concomitant with known average dust and moisture contents, and with economical operation. With the present tendency toward smaller stove checkers, it is generally agreed that gas for stove use should be cleaned to a dust content of 0.20 grain or less. The method employed and extent of gas cleaning are clearly problems for individual furnace plants. As a general proposition, wet washing is decidedly more attractive for furnaces smelting soft, fine Lake ores than for those reducing chiefly hard, lumpy ores, such as the foreign and domestic magnetites. In the former case the average moisture content of the gas is probably 35 grains per cubic foot, the dust content is relatively high and the top temperature relatively low. In our plant, the ore mixtures consist almost exclusively of hard magnetites. The average dust content of the gas leaving the dust catcher will average only about 2 grains and the moisture about 12 grains per cubic foot, corresponding to saturation at about 83" F. INTRODUCTION Throughout the world, the caving mining methods of ore-draw under the overlying waste rock are sublevel caving in Sweden, block caving in U.S.A. and forced block caving and sublevel caving with sill-pillar in U.S.S.R. These caving methods are of high efficiency, low cost and large production (especially the block caving method) when compared to opencast mining. From the ore production of all under- ground mines, the largest annual production of underground metalliferous mines in the world is caving methods. The sublevel caving in Kiruna Iron Mine of Sweden has reached annual ore production over 20 million tons in 1974. The block caving in Climax Molybdenum Mine and San Manuel Copper Mine of U.S.A. both have produced about 40 thou- sand tons of ore per day in 1971. At the same time, the productivity of Kiruna was 12 thousand tons of ore per man-year, Climax 42.8 tons (48.3 short tons) per man-shift and San Manuel 29.01 tons (32.1 short tons) per man-shift. The main feature of this group of mining methods is the underground extraction of ore from beneath overlying caveable waste rock. Since the loss and dilution of ore are inherent (sometimes to a great extent), the control of ore-draw in these methods as com- pared with other methods is very important. Consequently, concerned Universities and Research Institutes have devoted great amounts of research on ore-draw theory and control management which has provided positive results to mine production, and has apparently promoted the development of the caving methods. During 1979 in China, metalliferous underground mines accounted for 15.22% of the total iron ore produced, while also accounting for 56% of total non-ferrous production. According to the mining methods, sub level caving in the principal underground iron mines counted for about 56.74% of total principal underground iron mine production, but only about 1% of total non-ferrous underground mine production. Relative to forced block caving and sublevel caving with sill pillar, the Chinese non-ferrous under- ground mines estimated about 35% of total non-ferrous underground mine production from these two methods, mainly from the latter. From the trend of development of underground metalliferous mines in China, the percentage of production in caving will be increased in the future, especially in block caving and forced block caving which have already been given great attention in the mining circle. In these types of mining methods the ore is drawn from the stope under a large area of overlying waste rock, which complicates the basic regulation and control of ore-draw, but provides lower loss and dilution than sublevel caving. Because of these reasons, the Kiruna Iron Mine in Sweden is intending to change its sublevel caving by testing a sublevel shrinkage caving method and considering a large area of ore-draw beneath the stope as an advantage. Therefore, the basic regulation and control management of ore-draw under a large area, as practiced in China, will be discussed in this paper. BASIC REGULATION OF ORE- DRAW FROM CAVING STOPE The aim of studying ore-draw under a large area of overlying waste rock is to se- cure a planned draw schedule that guarantees a certain plane of interface between ore and waste rock, and controls the change of its shape in spatial position for reducing ore loss and dilution during the draw process. Presently, the ellipsoid theory is comparatively near the actual attitude of ore-draw from the cave. 1. Ore Drawn Out from Single Drawpoint Laboratory testing and practical experience all show that after a certain amount of ore has been drawn out from a drawpoint, its original shape in the stope before drawing is more or less similar to an ellipsoid, hence the name "draw ellipsoid." This draw ellipsoid is cut at the bottom by a horizontal plane corresponding to the raise of the drawpoint, and its volume can be calculated by the following formula:

INTRODUCTION Economic evaluation of an open pit mine is similar to the economic analysis of any major investment project in any industry. It requires (1) taking into account all of the costs and revenues that are estimated to be incurred over the economic life of the project; (2) crediting the project with all the tax savings and tax credits that will be realized over the project life from tax deductions and credits related to various project costs; (3) charging the project with all taxes to be paid on taxable income over the project life; and (4) properly accounting for the time value of money for all project costs, revenues, taxes, tax savings, and tax credits when making the overall project economic evaluation. These considerations must be taken into account for any valid method of economic analysis such as discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) or net present value (NPV) analyses. All economic analyses fall into one of two categories. ( 1 ) comparison of income-producing alternatives, or (2) comparison of service-producing alternatives. The analysis of alternatives in either of these categories can be made by using correctly any of five basic economic evaluation approaches which are. ( 1 ) present value, annual value, (3) future value, (4) rate of return (ROR) , and (5 ) break-even analysis. Of these evaluation techniques, DCFROR and NPV analyses are used most widely for evaluating income-producing alternatives while present worth cost and equivalent annual cost analyses are used most often for the evaluation of service-producing alternatives. In this chapter income- producing alternative analysis is emphasized, so DCF- ROR and NPV are utilized for evaluating the case studies presented.

Introduction. THIS study was undertaken on account of the lack of definite knowledge concerning the influence of bismuth on wire-bar copper, and the small elimination of bismuth from copper-matte during the smelting-operations. The early workers who studied the influence of bismuth on copper confined their investigations to malleability and ductility-two physical properties which are related to the others so intimately that their determination is of primary importance. Karsten ' and Levol,2 using bending- and mealleability-tests, seem to have been the first to take up the subject, and while their results are incomplete, they agree in the main with the later work of Hampe.3 The bending-tests used by the first investigators consisted in bending the specimen until it failed. The malleabilitytests were made by beating the material to a knife-edge with a hammer. Hampe not only determined the percentage of bismuth which would cause red-shortness and cold-shortness of the alloy, together with other influences of bismuth on the malleability and ductility of copper, but also took up the influence of the bismuth protoxide, BiO, on copper, and of bismuth sesquioxide, Bi2O3, on the copper protoxide, CuO. Hampe's conclusions of the influences of these two latter compounds of bismuth on copper are as follows "If the protoxide of bismuth be alloyed with metallic copper, it is not changed to metallic bismuth, but remains mechanically distributed throughout the copper.

A first requirement for assessing the safety of a rock slope, either artificial or natural, particularly if the rock behaves in an elastic-brittle manner, is a propw knowledge of the distribution of stresses within the slope and their development with time and advancement of workings. There are a uumber of different methods that can be used, in principle, for obtaining this information, such as (1) stress measurement in situ, (2) photoelasticity,1 (3) analytical methods, and (4) numerical methods. In cases where the stress distribution cannot be obtained by classical analytical methods, as in the one considered herein, either photoelasticity or numerical methods are norrnally used. However, actually, due to the rapid development of high-speed computers, increasing preference is given to the numerical methods. Among the latter, the most successful ones, to date, for determining the stress distribution in slopes have been (1) the finite difference method,2-4 (2) the lumped parameter method,5 and (3) the finite element rnethod.6 However, for determining gravity stresses in a natural rock slope, only the finite difference method has been used until now.7,8 A solution of the same problem by the finite element method will be shown here in which a particular reference is given to the development of tensile fracture zones within the slope. FINITE ELEMENT METHOD The stress analysis using the finite element method originates from an extension of the matrix analysis of structures.9 It consists in decomposing a continuous medium, assumed herein to be homogeneous and isotropic,

The occurrence of the tellurides of gold and silver, even in small quantities, is so rare that their metallurgical treatment has engaged little attention. A residence of several months at one of the few mines in North America the product of which consists entirely of such ore, has led me to arrange a method for its economical treatment. The mine referred to is the Huronian, situated a few miles distant from Jackfish Lake, in Ontario, Canada. The plan proposed is for this peculiar case, and is put on record as possibly suggestive and helpful .in any similar instance, should it occur. Since freight-rates from the mine to the nearest railroad-point were extremely high, and for other economical reasons, the method proposed is modified by the use, as far as possible, of the machinery already at the mine, and is so arranged that bullion instead of concentrates would be obtained as a final product. The ore-vein at the Huronian mine varied in width from about 4 feet at the surface to 2 feet and less at the lowest level—125 feet —and dipped southeast about 88. The rock consisted, on both foot- and hanging-walls, of soft, green Huronian slates carrying much highly crystalline but barren pyrite. The ore carried an inconsiderable amount of galena with iron and copper pyrites, argentite, hessite, sylvanite (or petzite), and probably altaite, the telluride of lead. Near the surface the ore showed considerable native gold, but this disappeared with greater depth. Two complete analyses of minerals containing tellurium are here attached, as they establish the presence of two important compounds: I. For a number of years the production and use of super-purity aluminum (better than 99.99 pct) has been steadily increasing. High-grade lots of. such aluminum show certain outstanding characteristics not found in lower grades containing principally silicon, iron and copper as impurities. One such characteristic is the so-called "self annealing," that is, the re-crystallization of the heavily cold worked metal at room temperature.' Interest therefore is aroused as to the effects of the impurities. It is well known that the amounts of silicon and copper which occur in aluminum of better than 99.95 pct are completely soluble, at least at elevated temperatures (above 200°C). Iron, on the other hand, is known to be fairly insoluble in solid aluminum. Thus, a knowledge of the limits of this solubility would he of considerable use in studying the characteristics of the high purity metal. All investigators have agreed that iron has very low solubility in solid aluminum. Rosenhain, Archbutt and Hanson2 reported traces of an aluminum-iron phase in the "purest samples of aluminum obtainable." Gwyer and Phillips3 reported that an iron constituent was visible under the microscope in metal containing ".0088 per cent iron." Roth4 found that in the solid state the solubility of iron in high purity aluminum was 0.01, 0.01, 0.017 and 0.022 pct at 225, 320, 500 and 600°C respectively. Dix5 working with alloys containing less than 0.03 pct impurities, concluded from microscopic and chemical analyses of eutectic areas that the eutectic composition was close to 1.7 pct iron. Dix placed the eutectic temperature at 65s°C. Archer and Fink,6 using high purity aluminum-iron alloys, found that the hypoeutectic liquidus intersects the eutec-tic horizontal at 1.7 pct. This is in fair agreement with the investigation of the aluminum-iron system by Gwyer and Phillips who placed the eutectic at 1.89 pct iron with a freezing point of 653'C. Preparation and Chemical Analysis oP Alloys Electrolytically refined aluminum (99.991 pct aluminum) and a high purity alumi-num-iron alloy (11.45 Pet iron) were used in the preparation of the alloys for this investigation. To aid in controlling the iron content of the experimental alloys, an alloy of lower iron content was prepared first from these materials. The high purity aluminum was melted and heated to about 700°C in a plumbago crucible coated with alundum cement and the aluminum-iron alloy was then added. The alloy was thoroughly stirred, fluxed and skimmed and then chill-cast into notch bars. The aIlalyses of the three materials are given in Table I. The alloys for the determination of the solid solubility of iron in aluminum were prepared by melting 600 g total of the aluminum plus the required quantity of the aluminum-iron alloy (No. 92531).
