The Gulf Coastal plain of the southern United States is that area bordering for a large part, the Gulf of Mexico and extending inland and northward to the main interior highland region. It is more or less V-shaped and includes the States of Florida, extreme southern Alabama, all .of Mississippi and Louisiana, the eastern and southern half of Arkansas, and the eastern, southeastern, and southern portions of Texas. While the contents of this paper apply to. the Gulf Coastal plain in general, they are intended to refer more specifically to that portion of the plain included between the 90th and 97th meridians, and the 29th and 33d parallels, an area that may be described geographically as comprising western Mississippi, all of Louisiana, part of eastern and all of south-eastern Texas. It is within this area that numerous and prolific oil pools have been developed during the last 17 years.

Although data on the exact tonnage of recoverable coal silt are not known, the quantity produced in 1943 was estimated to be over five million tons for the anthracite region of Pennsylvania alone. Since that time the recovery of the No. 5 buckwheat size previously included in silt estimates has increased greatly thus reducing the total silt tonnage. As a compensating factor, however, the methods of recovering silt previously escaping into the rivers and streams have been markedly improved so that the net figure may not have changed materially. Comparable estimates for bituminous coal are lacking, but undoubtedly the silt represents a significant tonnage. With the trend toward increased wet cleaning of the smaller sizes of bituminous coal, it is to be expected that even greater quantities of silt will be available in the future. The raw silt from anthracite collieries usually contains a high mineral matter content, but technological developments in fine coal cleaning have been making rapid advances and it appears probable that more extensive use of these methods will be employed in the near future. Bituminous coal silt in many instances contains a similar high mineral matter content. As with anthracite silt, however, the cleaning of this material, where necessary, appears both technologically and economically feasible. With a view to upgrading the size and value of silt, considerable laboratory and pilot plant work has been conducted by a number of organizations on what is commonly known as pelletization. Actually the process is one of extrusion in which the moist silt is extruded from a die in the form of rods, which usually break into relatively short lengths—a few inches long—as they fall from the die. Fig I is a photograph of some extruded 3/8-in. diam pellets and of the anthracite silt from which they were produced This technique of producing larger sized material from fines is by no means new, having been used extensively by the industrial carbon and clay industries for years.' The application of the process to coal silt appears, however, to be relatively new. The first major program of investigation dates back only to July 1945, when a group of engineers representing the Anthracite Institute, The Pennsylvania State College and the J. F. Pritchard and Co. conducted preliminary tests on the extrusion of anthracite silt at the Floridin Co. plant at Warren, Pa. Since that time these three organiza-tions—individually, together, and in cooperation with other interested groups— have actively pursued work on various phases of the problem. Much of the early history and details of the laboratory and pilot plant work by the Anthracite Institute, has been reported by Mulcey and Eckerd.2 It is the purpose of this paper to report additional information on the process, especially with respect to the factors influencing the quality and use properties of the product, and the current develop-

An interesting development of copper blast-furnace construction has been brought about in adapting the blast-furnace to be a "burner" for sulphuric acid making. When the Tennessee Copper Co. first decided to construct an acid-plant, the standard type of brick-top furnace, supported by structural steel, was the only one in use at its plant. All the tests for temperature and strength of gas had been made on these furnaces, and had been satisfactory. When, however, the acid-plant was put on the flue, and the flue had to have a damper put in it to force the gas into that plant, troubles began. The furnaces were fairly tight, and for a few months the work was quite satisfactory. Fig. 1 shows the old type of furnace-top used at the start. It was soon found that this top would not stand the temperatures, particularly when dampered back, as was necessary to force the gas into the Glover towers. The structural steel, of which the furnace skeleton was constructed, warped and twisted so badly that it was not safe to use the furnaccs. This effect is shown by Fig. 2, which is a photograph of old No. 4 furnace, after the brick-work had been removed. It became apparent that a new type of top mas necessary and the engineering force was started on the design of a new furnace-top, with the result that a low top, with brick-lined flues at each end below the feed-floor, leading to the main concrete dust-chamber, was constructed. This furnace, No. 7, is shown in Fig. 3. The charging-doors are made of cast-iron sections, three sections to a door, and three doors to a side. THE Comstock Lode is in Storey County, Nevada, and extends in a north and south direction through the towns of Virginia City and Gold Hill, with a total length of 4.27 miles. Its mines have produced silver and gold to a known value exceeding $400,- 000,000 since 1859, when the work first began. More than $126.000,000 was paid in dividends by the mining companies, although much more than this was probably realized from the ore, because many milling companies were independent companies owned by the directors and superintendents of the mines. The milling companies' contracts called for an extraction of only 65 per cent and, as much of the ore was worth $100 a ton and up- ward, they must have recovered substantial amounts for their own accounts over and above this guarantee. Gold was discovered in the spring of 1850 by a party of Normons bound for California. The discovery was made at the mouth of Gold canyon near Dayton, on the Carson River, about 10 miles south of Virginia City.

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Charles IV. Benton was born at Kezar Falls, Maine, Nov. 12, 1843. We have no accurate knowledge concerning the early part of his career. In 1871 he engaged with the N. Y. Honduras Rosario Mining Co., at San Juancinto, Honduras, C. A., and later was employed at the Monserrat mine at Yuscaran, and at Santa Lucia, Honduras, with the Tenero Mining Milling Co. of Pennsylvania. In 1897 he became a member of the Institute. At the time he was stricken with his last sickness he was employed at the Paymaster mine at Tucson, Ariz. He died at Fairmount, Denver, Colo., Sept. 9, 1907. William R. Boggs, Jr.-The notice in the Bulletin for January was incorrect in saying that the murder of Mr. Boggs occurred while he was employed as metallurgical. manager by Mr. W. B. A. Dingwall, at La Maroma, San Luis Potosi, Mex. Mr. Dingwall writes that in March, 1907, Mr. Boggs left him, to return to his home at Winston, N. C., whence he. subsequently went to Durango, Mex., to take, with the Topia Mining Co., a position which he occupied at the tine of his death, Nov. 17, 1907. Mr. Dingwall says that, while in his service, Mr. Boggs never had any trouble with the workmen, but was esteemed and liked by them, as by all who knew him ; and adds, injustice to the State of San Luis Potosi, that the population, even in the mining-camps of that State, is orderly and law-abiding, and that the authorities are vigilant and just. (Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AFTER 30 years of development and after an output of $350,000,000 in value of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper, there has not been published a satisfactory explanation of the origin of the immense deposits of the Leadville district. The original examination find survey of Leadville by members of the U. S. Geological Survey was a most magnificent piece of work, but their attempt to explain the origin of the ores was based upon the then-accepted theory of lateral secretion, originated by Sandberger, which theory was afterwards disproved in many cases by further development in numerous districts. This theory contended that the ore in the veins had been leached by surface-waters from the eruptive rocks in the immediate vicinity, and it had its origin in the fact that the neighboring eruptive rocks all contained, to an appreciable degree, the several metals found in the ore-deposits. But the practical miner, reasoning in a simple manner from the condition of things as he found them underground, soon discovered the fallacy of this proposition. He reasoned that, in the case of the Leadville deposits, this theory could not be true, because, if the ores were leached from the overlying eruptive rocks by surface-waters, they would as a matter of necessity be controlled by the action of gravity, and the main bodies would collect in- natural depressions of the underlying limestone, and at all points where such depressions existed. But this was not in accord with the channels of ore as he found there ; and hence the theory of lateral secretion in this district was never accepted. Another objection to it consisted in the fact that large areas within the ore-bearing district contained no ores whatever, although their formation was the same, and the same limestones were covered by the same thick sheet of

The real and apparent dependence of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds, of gold on crystallo-graphic orientation has been investigated by isolated scratch smoothing and grain boundary grooving experiments. No systematic variation of Ds with orientation was found along the [100] zone. In view of the experimental scatter in these results, however, only aniso-tropy ratios, p, greater than -1.3 would be detectable. Anomalously low values of Ds were found on the [0ll] and [110] zones when the diffusion direction lies along (the scratch or grain boundary groove is perpendicular to) these zones. By comparing these results with a previous y plot study of gold, it is hypothesized that this is not an intrinsic diffusivity effect, but rather it results from a decreased driving force for mass transfer at orientations where the y-plot curvature is negative and appreciable in magnitude relative to y. The characteristics of this type of anisotropy do not appear sEVERAL investigations1-7 have dealt with the anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds, of metals as measured by the decay of single or multiple to be in agreement with the hypothesis of fast diffusion along ledges in the surface structure. In certain cases the Fourier method of determining Ds, described in Paper I of this series9 was compared with the second moment analysis in order to determine whether or not the method of analysis affects the anisotropy ratio. While the type of analysis does influence the magnitude of the anisotropy ratio, this effect is not associated with the shape of the profile, but rather is connected with the iterative volume diffusion correction used in conjunction with the second moment analysis. It is further demonstrated that the volume diffusion correction can be too large by either method when the y-plot curvature effect is large. Certain orientations exhibit an unusual temperature dependence of Ds ; this is discussed in terms of the y-plot curvature effect and/or the influence of impurities on Ds . scratches in the surface. Depending on the system investigated, both large1"3'6'7 and small4'5 anisotropies in Ds have been found. Although adsorbed impurities undoubtedly play an important role in determining the magnitude of the anisotropy,8 there are other factors that can give rise to an apparent anisotropy in Ds, thus obscuring the true nature of an intrinsic anisotropy in

AT THE Belmont mill, the pregnant solution is de¬livered to a 30 by 10-ft. tank, from which it is pumped to three Merrill clarifying presses of the sluice-bar type, whence it flows through the meter to the precipitation supply tank. ?The solution for precipitation is pumped by a 10 by 10-in. Aldrich triplex pump and delivered through a 6-in. line to the forty-eight triangular frame Merrill presses at the head of the mill. Zinc dust is fed in at the pump suction and the solution precipitated to 0.01 to 0.02 oz. silver. The solution flowing from the presses is tested at 1-hr. intervals with sodium sulfide. All solution is precipitated to the same value; 4J tons of solution are precipitated for each ton of ore treated and the presses are cleaned every 15 days. The product from the presses' is dumped into steel cars having steam-jacketed bottoms, in which they are dried until the moisture content is between 15 and 17 per cent. when 8. per cent. of soda and .3 per cent. of borax are added and the contents thoroughly mixed. In the case of special clean-ups, the precipitate is tested and the flux is added to meet the requirements.

The use of nickel-steel has directed increasing interest of late towards the deposits of nickel, and at the same time the parallel advance in our knowledge of the basic igneous rocks has rendered these deposits a subject of important geological inquiry. Investigations have led to some views, more or less new, on the igneous origin of certain ores, which, though not universally accepted, have a growing number of adherents. In Europe, the mines in Norway have been especially suggestive subjects of study, and others somewhat less generally known have also added their testimony; while in this country the great economic importance and scientific interest of the developments in the Sudbury district of Canada, have furnished the principal texts for the discourses that have appeared among us. The purpose of the present paper is to set forth these views through the medium of one interesting ore-body, of which but little has been written ; and, by the description of another, to place in contrast two different geological associations in which nickeliferous pyrrhotite occurs, and to indicate a generalization, based upon these different geological characters, and justified by the experience so far gained. To Prof. J. H. L. Vogt, of Christiania, Norway, is due the chief credit for the revival of interest in the geology of nickel. THE Dawson coal-mines are owned and operated by the Stag Canon Fuel Co., of which Dr. James Douglas is President and E. L. Carpenter general manager. The property is situated in Colfax county, N. M., and the openings now in operation are in townships 28 and 29 N. R. 20 E., and township 28 N. R. 21 E., shown in Fig. 1. The mines are part of the southern end of the Raton coal-field, which extends north into Colorado and embraces many coal-camps of the Trinidad section. II. GEOLOGY. Geologically, the coal-measures, commonly known as the Laranmie series of the Cretaceous system, have a thickness of about 800 ft. in the vicinity of Dawson. The coal makes an excellent coke, and, according to some authorities, its coking properties are clue to the action of intruded sheets and sills of igneous rock, the sheets occasionally thickening into masses resembling laccoliths, at such places making nearer approach to the coal and sometimes producing small areas of natural coke. There are but few dikes through¬out the entire southern portion of the field and little or no faulting along the dikes. In some parts of this great coal-field the intrusive sheets are far removed in the green shales below the coal-measures, and are so much altered as to be difficult of identification. There is but little disturbance of the strata through¬out the Raton coal-field in as far as it extends into New Mexico. Under the joint auspices of the Illuminating Engineering Society and the University of Pennsylvania there will be given about 20 lectures covering the general principles of illumination and the aspects of lighting practice. They will be held at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, from Sept. 21 to 28, 1916, inclusive. The subject of illumination of mines will be included in this series, which will be delivered by men selected on account of their qualifications to deal authoritatively with the several phases of the subject. In connection with the lectures there will be an exhibition of the latest developments in illuminating appliances, including lamps, accessories, photometers, together with novel applications of light. There will also be an inspection tour which will include visits to manufacturing establishments, laboratories, lighting companies and notable lighting installations. T HE theory of hardening by heat treatment was, as usual, the most actively discussed phase of metal working theory and in spite of the fact that it is now ten years since the dispersion theory was proposed by Messrs. Merica, Waltenberg, and Scott, it still retains a dominating influence. It is being increasingly recognized. however, that in its simplest form, that is, the purely mechanical effect of very fine crystallites distributed through a groundmass, it is distinctly in- adequate. To explain the observed facts we are obliged to assume some well-defined intermediate stage between supercooled solid solution and conglomerate, however fine be the particles of the latter. This intermediate has been inferred by Gaylor and Preston to be "the rejection of the atoms of the dissolved metal from the lattice of the solid solution accompanied by the possible formation of molecules."' Perhaps this may well be designated as the formation of supersaturated solid solution. Some very definite evidence of such an inter- mediate stage has been found in the hardening of steel where it appears that the very hard martensite may be considered as a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron. The X-ray spectrometry of drastically quenched steel shows a tetragonal lattice whose parameter changes by tempering at 100" until it coincides with the cubic lattice of iron.? The same gradual change of the tetragonal to the cubic lattice has been observed by Sekito when esamining layers on increasing depth below the surface of a quenched carbon steel.

INVESTIGATIONS by the Bureau of Mines of deposits containing strategic minerals were authorized by what has become known as the Strategic Materials Act (Public No. 117, 76th Congress, Chapter 190. 1st Session). A later act providing an appropriation for the first of four years through which the investigations are to be conducted was signed on Aug. 9, 1939. No time has since been lost as seven field projects already are being vigorously prosecuted, and two others no doubt soon will be in course of execution. Project engineers were at their stations within two days after funds had been made available. Crews have been hired; equipment and supplies have been purchased; 5 bids for diamond drilling have been obtained and the drilling has started base camps have been established: ground has been cleared; and several thousand feet of trenching, test-pitting, and sampling have already been done. At the Reno Experiment Station of the Bureau, a special metallurgical laboratory has been provided to make assays, analyses, and tests upon samples of ores from all projects under investigation.

Large scale mining of Mesabi taconites may have moved nearer to realization with the arrival of the latest model Linde Jet-Piercing machine at Reserve Mining Co.'s Babbitt, Minn. property. When the machine is placed in operation it is expected to pierce blast holes in the hard taconite beds up to 10 times faster than is possible with existing drilling equipment. The new primary blast hole drilling machine has been designated the JPM-3, and is the successor to the JPM-1, in operation at Erie Mining Co.'s taconite mines at Aurora, Minn. The size of primary blast holes which can now be pierced has increased from a nominal 61 in. diameter to 71 in. diameter and maximum hole depth has increased from 35 ft to 47 ft. Development has progressed to where 71/2 in. holes can be pierced with the same speed as 61/2 in. holes. Piercing progress is controlled by electronic blowpipe descent controls. Other features of the JPM-3 include: automatic burner ignition from the operating cab; heated and air conditioned operating cab designed for all-year operation; mechanical improvements for sub-zero operation common to the Mesabi, and redesign of wearing parts for longer service with minimum maintenance. The 40-ton machine is self-propelled. Power, oxygen, and cooling water lines trail from the machine. Jet piercing is based on combustion products of oxygen and a liquid fuel such as kerosene. The flame, jetting from a burner at speeds of about 6000 ft per sec, disintegrates layers of spallable rock. The burner is cooled by water which is then directed through orifices around the periphery of the burner. The water changes to steam and carries the spallings out of the hole. The equipment used in Jet-Piercing is essentially a tractor-mounted blowpipe containing a combustion chamber and nozzle, which is in effect a miniature rocket motor, from which the supersonic combustion gases emerge to do their work.

WHEN I came out of Stanford University in 1922, the out-look for men trained in geology, petroleum engineering, and mining was indeed dismal; in fact, so much so that most of us looked upon our future in those fields as pretty hopeless. Neither our professors nor those men in industry with whom we came in contact gave us any enthusiastic encouragement as to the future of ourselves or the fields we had chosen for our labors. I believe that the attitude of pessimism which saturates everyone about graduation time is lament able and short-sighted, and may often start a young man on his way with an attitude of defeatism. Instead, he should be starting out knowing that he can expect hard work and keen competition, but that the fields of his labours are expanding at an accelerated rate, and that strong, energetic efforts will as always accomplish highly satisfactory results.
