An investigation was carried out on the dynamic liltration behavior of drilling fluids. In a set-up consisting of a porous pipe through which the drilling mud was circulated, dynamic liltration rates and cake thicknesses were determined as a function of flow rate and filtration time. Eventually, a state of equilibrium was reached; i.e., both cake thickness and filtration rate attained constant values. Concurrently, dynamic filtration tests were carried out in a simple dynamic filter apparatus where mud flow was similar to that in a rotational vismmeter. In both arrangements the relation between equilibrium liltration data and rate of shear at the cake surlace was studied. Filter pipe and dynamic filter apparatus were lound to give identical relations. It was therelore concluded that the latter apparatus, which is suitable lor routine measurements on small amounts of mud, could be used to determine the dynamic liltration behavior of mud under borehole flow conditions. Some data are presented on the effect of filtration pressure and temperature on equilibrium filtration rate and cake thickness. INTRODUCTION In oil well drilling, the drilling fluid used generally forms a mud cake on the permeable sections of the borehole wall while filtrate is lost into the formation. As to the conditions under which this filtration process takes place, a distinction should be made between static mud filtration (mud is not circulating) and dynamic mud filtration (mud is circulating). In recent years several investigatorsl-5 have studied the process of dynamic mud filtration about which little had previously been known. This type of filtration is the subject of this paper which confirms several findings of previous investigators. It differs from already published works, however, in the following respects. 1. It contains a description of a simple laboratory apparatus developed for dynamic filtration measurements on small amounts of mud. 2. The effect of rate of shear at the cake surface on dynamic filtration has been studied. As a result of this study, dynamic filtration data pertaining to the borehole conditions of mud flow can be found from laboratory tests. 3. Some data are presented on the effect of filtration pressure and temperature on dynamic filtration. The work was limited to a small number of muds. No attempt was made to compare data on API filtrare loss with dynamic filtration rates. Previous workers have clearly shown that no correlation exists between static and dynamic filtration rates. EXPERIMENTAL ARRANGEMENT To establish whether the effect of mud flow conditions on dynamic filtrations is governed by the rate of shear at the cake surface, two different types of mud flow were used. In this connection the experiments were partially conducted by means of a porous pipe through which mud was circulated, partly in a dynamic filter apparatus which somewhat resembles a rotational viscometer. In both cases the flow conditions of the mud were well defined, thus making it possible to-calculate rates of shear at the cake surface. The filter pipe was 200 cm long with an internal diameter of 3 cm. Its perforated wall was covered on the inside with filter cloth on which the mud cake could form. Mud was pumped through the pipe at linear rates varying from 20 to 186 cm/sec. The required filtration pressure was obtained by means of a lack-pressure valve downstream of the filter pipe. In this arrangement the type of flow existing in the borehole is reasonably well simulated. The dynamic filter apparatus (Figs. I. and 2) consists mainly of two concentric cylinders with a clearance of about 0.5 cm. The outer cylinder (rotor) can be rotated at rates up to 1,000 rpm. (communication to the Secretary ?).-Dr. Pogue's presentation of the facts concerning the emerald deposits is very clear and convincing, and the only addition that I can suggest is a summary of previous theories of origin. He makes it evident that the pegmatite theory is the only one capable of explaining the existing relations, but upon certain details there may be some difference of opinion. If I understand the term pneumatolytic, it does not imply that all the elements concerned in a given deposit were transported as gases, but rather that the crystallization of these elements into the various minerals was favored by the presence of certain gaseous substances, notably H20, C02 and HF. It is highly improbable that the oxides of glucinum, aluminum, chromium, and silicon, which enter into the composition of the mineral emerald could have been transported in the gaseous form. The same is true of the metallic constituents of the parisite and other associated minerals. The explanation suggested, that solutions separated into liquid and gaseous portions, the latter ascending and forming the emerald in the upper portions of the rock only, therefore, seems to me untenable. When two formations exist side by side and one, A, is mineralized while the other, B, is barren, the possible explanations may he classed as (1) chemical, and (2) physical. 1. Some chemical feature of A not found in B might have caused crystallization of certain minerals in the former, which did not appear in the latter. In the present instance both rocks appear to be so similar chemically that no such effect can be looked for. Pogue mentions carbon as a possible precipitating agent, but describes both formations as carbonaceous, so that the difference in the minerals of the two can not be thus explained.

E. D. HYMAN*—How much sorting of scrap is done ? G. E. JOHNSON (author's reply)—We do practically no sorting. We charge "run of mine" scrap to the furnace. The unmeltables, mostly iron, are in such demand today that there is no difficulty in disposing of them. It may soon be desirable to sort out from the unmeltables as much of the brass as possible. J. J. BRUGMAN†—We have somewhat similar problems in the secondary aluminum business. What is your method of removing the unmelted material from the furnaces? Why have you such an apparently small space in which to charge your materials? Do you find that you have to seal that opening, or can you have it open and continuously charge at one end and pull out the other ? G. E. JOHNSON—Our means of melting scrap is efficient only to the extent that we use the waste heat from the vaporizing chamber to do the job. It is a batch process. We open the charge door and place the scrap on the hearth by hand shoveling. The door is then closed during the melting down period. After the melting is complete, the opposite door is opened and the unmeltables are raked out. The doors are approximately 3½ X 4½ ft and are not sealed during the process only closed. They are nominally tight. Some metal is oxidized in the process. We have visualized a means of conveying the materials through this melting unit with the metals that are melted trickling out during its travel. T. H. WELDON‡—Mr. Johnson, in line with the last question, is it necessary to seal the furnace between the melting down and the vaporizing unit, or have you got an inverted syphon in the bottom of the chamber? G. E. JOHNSON—That was one of the first things we encountered. We had to have a sealed opening, and it is a molten metal seal. You have indirectly asked me another question, which was: "Do you have to seal up the melting unit?" I would say we should exclude as much air as possible, although we are not too efficient in doing that. We allow the melting unit doors to be open when we charge and when we remove unmeltables. You can readily see that that would lead to the idea of having a controlled atmosphere in the melting unit, and I think this would do a more efficient job of melting the scrap. T. H. WELDON—How often do you charge the furnace? G. E. JOHNSON—We charge the melting unit, and rake out the unmeltables, about every hour. H. R. HANLEY*—Are any provisions made for controlling the rate of oxidation for the production of various size particles for certain characteristics of the zinc oxide product? G. E. JOHNSON—Yes, there are many. You are getting pretty much into the fine points of zinc oxide manufacture. Some of us still think we have something to learn about that. In general, this muffle furnace as I have described it to you produces a rounded particle of zinc oxide which is generally formed by a rapid oxidation of the zinc vapor, followed by rapid cooling. We have gone to the other extreme in some of our experiments. We have changed the furnace to produce a type of zinc oxide, such as we thought was peculiar to American process zinc oxide, by controlling the temperature at the point of oxidation and maintaining that temperature for a much longer period of time than we do when we make the rounded shape. There are other relationships that this furnace readily provides. One of the important factors is the ratio of air to zinc vapors. We can vary that by varying the air supply to the baghouse, or vary the rate at which we are vaporizing the zinc by the simple expedient of regulating the temperature over the carborundum arch. We have a number of variables that permit us to produce all of the grades of French process zinc oxide from lead-free up through the highest grades of seal oxides. There are many controls that we can apply to the operation. What I have said is but a brief condensation. K. MORGAN*—Can Mr. Johnson give us some idea of the fuel consumption of the furnace ? How much oil does he use per ton of zinc distilled? I am also interested to know what sort of heat transmission he gets through the arch? What is the thickness of the tiles used to construct the arch? Some time ago we built a small furnace for a different purpose, using a carborundum arch, and we found that the reflectivity of the molten zinc surface was so great we had to use a very high arch temperature. We found we made an improvement by having a layer of carbon on the surface of the zinc. Has Mr. Johnson had any experience on these points ? Does he make any sort of insolu-bles which he leaves in the furnace which he cannot tap out ? G. E. JOHNSON—I believe your first question was the fuel consumption. If I recall, somewhere in this paper there is a test that I quote. I believe we used 800 gal in a given period of time. Offhand I cannot translate that into tons of metal. I might also state that we have this understanding; that the carborundum arch, as the temperature becomes higher, becomes more efficient in heat transmission. As a matter of fact, I believe it is at about 2600°F or higher that the highest efficiency of heat transmission becomes available. We have calculations that I cannot quote from memory which indicate that the carborundum arch does a really very fine job for this type of furnace. Another point that we had considered was the fact that this furnace could be readily constructed so as to furnish an ideal source of heat for waste heat boilers. If a carborundum arch was used over the melting unit, we would have no zinc vapors in the gases at all— just clean combustion gases from which we would have removed some of the heat. L. P. IT Is well known that manganese will desulfurize molten iron through the formation of manganese sulfide, which, being only slightly soluble in the metal, rises to and enters the slag where it remains as such (mixer slag) or is converted partly or wholly to calcium sulfide (basic open¬hearth slag). The reaction by which manganese sulfide is formed is Mn + FeS = MnS + Fe. This reaction is generally considered to be reversible, although McCance1 states- that such is not the case. The experimental work was carried out to confirm the results of Rohl2 as to the reversibility of the reaction. Six trials are herein considered. In each 200 grams of electrolytic iron free from manganese and sulfur were melted in a pure zirconia crucible in a carbon resistance electric furnace. To the melted iron in runs 2, 3 and 4 metallic manganese and manganese sulfide were added to give 1, 2 and 4 per cent. manganese respectively, with 0.50 per cent. of sulfur in each. In runs 5, 6 and 7, metallic manganese andiron sulfide to give the same proportions of manganese and sulphur as in runs 2, 3 and 4, were added. The melts were held molten in the furnace for an hour and then cast into small ingots.

THE present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semi-killed as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. ADDING SULPHUR AS A SULPHITE These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the steel by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which-upon decomposition-forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig, I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig, 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast-that is, before rolling and were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. 2 shows that the sulphide inclusions are more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. The application of the mass action law to the thermodynamic treatment of metal-slag equilibria is discussed. The consideration of the reactions essentially as ionic exchange equilibria is shown to be both an advantage and an aid for the elucidation of the theoretical treatment. This is illustrated by several examples. In general two different methods of application of the mass action law to metal-slag equilibria have been used by different groups of investigators. These could be called the oxide reaction and the ionic reaction approach respectively. At the recent discussion in the metallurgical section of the I.U.P.A.C. Congress in Montreal, 1961,' divergent opinions prevailed regarding the most rational way of applying the mass action law to metal-slag equilibria. This question is of fundamental importance in the treatment and understanding of theoretical chemical metallurgy. Consequently, the following is an attempt to contribute towards its clarification. As an example, the distribution of iron and manganese between molten iron and slag will be considered. HE lecture on 'Thermodynamic Properties of Blast Furnace Slagso prepared in 1959 and published two years later required revision in one particular before it appeared in print. The activity of SiO, was deter mined through studies of the equilibrium: SiO, (in slag) 2C (graphite) = (in Fe) 2C0 (1 atm) The ratio for each experimental temperature was found from the heat of formation of cris-tobalite, the entropies and heat capacities of the re-actants, by virtue of the third law of thermodynamics. Discrepancies between several kinds of data led to investigations regarding other equilibria involving SiO, on the suspicion that there might be an error in the third-law value of its free energy. In particular the equilibrium: was restudied by Kay and Taylor who Confirmed the earlier results of Baird and Tayloron which their SiO, activities depended. The free energy of Sic was also rechecked4 independently. These and other equilibrium measurements led to the conclusion6 that the free energy of SiO, at high temperatures is in error and requires a correction of about -5 kcal. The exact source of the error is uncertain; it could lie either in the entropy of SiO, or in its heat of formation, but it more probably lies in the latter. Adjustment of this free energy lowers the ratio by a factor of approximately 4. Accordingly it will be necessary to multiply by this factor all of the SiO, activities determined by this method.',B Referring to the lecture cited, this correction should be applied in Figs. 8, 9, 10, 19, and 20. It applies also to the experimental data of Fig. 13, bringing these as well as those on the ternary system into good agreement with the work of Taylor and associates. THE fundamental hydrodynamic principles governing the production of oil from wells have been carefully studied and evaluated by many investigators. These prior studies are quite complete and cover virtually the entire field of oil production and recovery.1 One of the most impor-tant measurements in production studies is that of the bottom-hole pressure at various rates of production.2 It is the purpose of this paper to outline the technique and economics of fluid-level measurements as applied to pumping wells and to review briefly other methods for obtain-ing bottom-hole data. The applications of bottom-hole pressure or fluid-level measure-ments are based on simple hydrodynamic principles. Under equilib-rium conditions, pbh = hd + pg + pch [ l] when pbh = bottom-hole pressure, lb. per sq. in. absolute, h = height of fluid in well, ft., d = average fluid density, lb. per sq. in. per foot, pg = weight of section of gas column 1 in. square from fluid level to casing head, pch = casing-head pressure, lb. per sq. in. absolute. In words, equation 1 states that the bottom-hole pressure is equal to the weight hd of the column of fluid plus the weight of the column of gas between the fluid and the casing head plus the casing-head pressure. At moderate rates of flow, the rate of production is approximately proportional to the difference between the reservoir, or static bottom-hole, pressure and the flowing or producing pressure; i.e.: Q = c(pr - pbh) [2] pr = the reservoir pressure, c = the constant of proportionality. Laboratory flooding experiments on linear flow systerns indicated that high oil displacement, approaching that obtained from completely miscible solvents, can be attained by injecting a small slug of carbon dioxide into a reservoir and driving it with plain or carbonated water. Data are presented in this paper which show the results of laboratory work designed to evaluate this oil recovery process, particularly at reservoir temperatures above 100°F and in the pressure range of 600 to 2,600 psi. Under these conditions CO2 exists as a dense single-phase fluid. It was found that a bank, rich in light hydrocarbons, was formed at the leading edge of the CO? slug during floods on long cores. Formation of this bank is probably due to a selective extraction by the C02 and, it is believed, partially accounts for the attractively high oil recoveries. In crddition to the efficient displacernerlt of oil from the pores of the rock by this process, the favorable rnobility ratio related to a C0 2-water flood also contributes to high oil recovery. A further advantage of this process is noted on limestone and dolomite rock, in that the CO1 reacts with the porous medium increasing its permeability. Flooding experiments were conducted on sandstone and vugular dolomite models. The results of this experimental work show the effect on oil recovery of type of porous medium, pore geometry, flooding length, and flooding pressure. The porosity of the cores and rilodels varied from 16 to 21 per cent and their pern~eabilities ranged from 100 to 200 md. A reconstituted West Texas reservoir oil, a West Texas stock tank oil, an East Texas stock tank oil and Soltrol were used to represent reservoir oils in this study. Oil recoveries ranging from 60 to 80 per cent of the original oil in place in these cores were obtained by CO2,-carbonated water floods at pressures between 900 and 1,800 psi, compared with conventional solution gas drive and water-flood recoveries of 30 to 45 per cent on the same cores. Oil recoveries greater than 80 per cent resulted frorn f1oods at pressures above about 1.800 psi. There high recoveries were noted from both the sandstone and the irregular Porosity carbonate cores. In all floods, additional oil was recovered by a solutiorr gas drive resulting from blowdown following the flood. Oil recoveries of 6 to 15 per cent of the original oil in place were obtained during this blowdown period. This additional recovery was found to be a function of oil remaining after the flood, decreasing with decreasing oil saturation. It was also noted that highest oil recoveries by blowdown were obtained when carborlated water rather than plain water followed the CO, slug. INTRODUCTION Miscible phase or solvent flooding processes, which are designed to increase oil recovery -from petroleum reservoirs, involve the injection of small quantities of a petroleum solvent into the reservoir, followed by an inexpensive scavenging fluid which is miscible with the solvent. Essentially complete displacement of oil from the pores of reservoir rock has been obtained by this technique. CO,, although not completely miscible with most reservoir oils at moderate pressures, is highly soluble in these oils at pressures above about 700 psi; there is appreciable swelling and reduction in the viscosity of oil when CO, is dissolved in it. Therefore, CO, could be expected to perform similarly to other oil solvents as a displacing agent. CO, is also highly soluble in water at elevated pressures, so water should be a satisfactory material to drive a slug of CO, through an oil-bearing reservoir. A favorable mobility ratio would be obtained through the reduction in viscosity of the oil and the use of water as a final displacing agent. A number of investigations of the use of CO, to improve oil recovery have been reported in the literature.2,3,4,5,6 These studies, however, have been conducted on uniform porosity sandstone at relatively low temperatures and pressures. The behavior of CO1 as a flooding agent at temperatures above its critical temperature could not be predicted adequately from these studies, particularly for the case of non-homogeneous rock. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the oil recovery efficiency of a process involving the injection of a CO2 slug followed by carbonated water, at reservoir temperatures above 100°F and in the pressure range of 600 to 2,600 psi, and to compare this process with conventional water flooding. The investigations were primarily designed to provide information on the efficiency of the process in irregular porosity carbonate rock. The effects of flooding path length, the presence of free gas, the type of oil to be recovered, and the amount of solvent required were also determined. WITH Thomas G. Fear, chairman of the Coal Di- vision, presiding, the coal miners opened their program Monday morning with a general session at which three papers were presented. The first, "The Classification of Coal for Stationary Steam Generation," was presented by the author, Thomas W. Harris, Jr. In discussion, H. T. Coates inquired if it would not be possible to pick out a geographical coal section, certain seams or a group of mines, which would rank high in a desired feature or features, perhaps giving different -- - local sections or different mines something to designate a rating ("good," "fair," and "poor"). This might be done relative to anti-clinkering, free-burning, ,anti-slagging, smokelessness, friability and grindability. These might be listed or arranged on a map or diagram so that the prospective customer could find a coal that rated particularly high in desired characteristics. C. A. Reed pointed out, in part, that coal producers and sellers have found a bad but necessarily present condition in the country, especially with the smaller user of coal. This is entirely due to the fact that the employer expects his purchasing representative to be a genius and have expert knowledge of everything he buys, coal included, whereas in the larger plants he has and uses expert knowledge from the active organization when necessary. J. B. Morrow said that size rating was important in classifying coal and he emphasized that it was impossible to come to a definite basis on analysis alone.

MOST investigators are aware of the present unsatisfactory investigatorsstate of information concerning the fundamentals of crushing and grinding. Considerable scattered empirical data exist, which andare useful for predicting machine performance and give acceptable accuracy when the installations and materials compared are quite similar. However, there is no widely accepted unifying principle or theory that can explain satisfactorily the actual energy input necessary canexplain commercial installations, or can greatly extend the range of empirical comparisons. Two mutually contradictory theories have long existed in the literature, the Rittinger and Kick. They were derived from different viewpoints and logically lead to different results. The Rittinger theory is the older and more widely accepted.'TheRittinger In its first form, as stated by P. R. Ritted.'tinger, it postulates that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the new surface area produced and hence inversely proportional to the product diameter. In its second form it has been amplified and enlarged to include the concept of surface energy; in this form it was precisely stated by A. M. Gaudin' as follows: "The efficiency of a comminution operation is the ratio of the surface energy produced to the kinetic energy expended." According to the theory in its second form, measurements of the surface areas of the feed and product and determinations of the surface energy per unit of new surface area produced give the useful work accomplished. Computations using the best values of surface energy obtainable indicate that perhaps 99 pct of the work input in crushing and grinding is wasted. However, no method of comminution has yet been devised which results in a reasonably high mechanical efficiency under this definition. Laboratory tests have been reported- hat support the theory in its first form by indicating that the new surface produced in different grinds is proportional to the work input. However, most of these tests employ an unnatural feed consisting either of screened particles of one sieve size or a scalped feed which has had the fines removed. In these cases the proportion of work done on the finer product particles is greatly increased and distorted beyond that to be expected with a normal feed containing the natural fines. Tests on pure crystallized quartz are likely to be misleading, since it does not follow the regular breakage pattern of most materials but is regularrelativelybreakage harder to grind patternat the finer sizes, as will be shown later. This theory appears to be indefensible mathematically, since work is the product of force multiplied by distance, and the distance factor (particle deformation before breakage) is ignored. The Kick theory4 is based primarily upon the stress-strain diagram of cubes under compression, or the deformation factor. It states that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. Where F represents the diameter of the feed particles and P is the diameter of the product particles, the reduction ratio Rr is F/P, and according to Kick the work input required for reduction to different sizes is proportional to log Rr /log 2." The Kick theory is mathematically more tenable than the Rittinger when cubes under compression are considered, but it obviously fails to assign a sufficient proportion of the total work in reduction to the production of fine particles. According to the Rittinger theory as demonstrated by the theoretical breakage of cubes the new surface produced, and consequently the useful work input, is proportional to Rr-l.V f a given reduction takes place in two or more stages, the overall reduction ratio is the product of the Rr values for each stage, and the sum of the work accomplished in all stages is proportional to the sum of each Rr-1 value multiplied by the relative surface area before each reduction stage. It appears that neither the Rittinger theory, which is concerned only with surface, nor the Kick theory, which is concerned only with volume, can be completely correct. Crushing and grinding are concerned both with surface and volume; the absorption of evenly applied stresses is proportional to the volume concerned, but breakage starts with a crack tip, usually on the surface, and the concentration of stresses on the surface motivates the formation of the crack tips. The evaluation of grinding results in terms of surface tons per kw-hr, based upon screen analysis, involves an assumption of the surface area of the subsieve product, which may cause important errors. The evaluation in terms of kw-hr per net ton of —200 mesh produced often leads to erroneous results when grinds of appreciably different fineness are compared, since the amount of —200 mesh material produced varies with the size distribution characteristics of the feed. MOST investigators are aware of the present unsatisfactory investigatorsstate of information concerning the fundamentals of crushing and grinding. Considerable scattered empirical data exist, which andare useful for predicting machine performance and give acceptable accuracy when the installations and materials compared are quite similar. However, there is no widely accepted unifying principle or theory that can explain satisfactorily the actual energy input necessary canexplain commercial installations, or can greatly extend the range of empirical comparisons. Two mutually contradictory theories have long existed in the literature, the Rittinger and Kick. They were derived from different viewpoints and logically lead to different results. The Rittinger theory is the older and more widely accepted.'TheRittinger In its first form, as stated by P. R. Ritted.'tinger, it postulates that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the new surface area produced and hence inversely proportional to the product diameter. In its second form it has been amplified and enlarged to include the concept of surface energy; in this form it was precisely stated by A. M. Gaudin' as follows: "The efficiency of a comminution operation is the ratio of the surface energy produced to the kinetic energy expended." According to the theory in its second form, measurements of the surface areas of the feed and product and determinations of the surface energy per unit of new surface area produced give the useful work accomplished. Computations using the best values of surface energy obtainable indicate that perhaps 99 pct of the work input in crushing and grinding is wasted. However, no method of comminution has yet been devised which results in a reasonably high mechanical efficiency under this definition. Laboratory tests have been reported- hat support the theory in its first form by indicating that the new surface produced in different grinds is proportional to the work input. However, most of these tests employ an unnatural feed consisting either of screened particles of one sieve size or a scalped feed which has had the fines removed. In these cases the proportion of work done on the finer product particles is greatly increased and distorted beyond that to be expected with a normal feed containing the natural fines. Tests on pure crystallized quartz are likely to be misleading, since it does not follow the regular breakage pattern of most materials but is regularrelativelybreakage harder to grind patternat the finer sizes, as will be shown later. This theory appears to be indefensible mathematically, since work is the product of force multiplied by distance, and the distance factor (particle deformation before breakage) is ignored. The Kick theory4 is based primarily upon the stress-strain diagram of cubes under compression, or the deformation factor. It states that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. Where F represents the diameter of the feed particles and P is the diameter of the product particles, the reduction ratio Rr is F/P, and according to Kick the work input required for reduction to different sizes is proportional to log Rr /log 2." The Kick theory is mathematically more tenable than the Rittinger when cubes under compression are considered, but it obviously fails to assign a sufficient proportion of the total work in reduction to the production of fine particles. According to the Rittinger theory as demonstrated by the theoretical breakage of cubes the new surface produced, and consequently the useful work input, is proportional to Rr-l.V f a given reduction takes place in two or more stages, the overall reduction ratio is the product of the Rr values for each stage, and the sum of the work accomplished in all stages is proportional to the sum of each Rr-1 value multiplied by the relative surface area before each reduction stage. It appears that neither the Rittinger theory, which is concerned only with surface, nor the Kick theory, which is concerned only with volume, can be completely correct. Crushing and grinding are concerned both with surface and volume; the absorption of evenly applied stresses is proportional to the volume concerned, but breakage starts with a crack tip, usually on the surface, and the concentration of stresses on the surface motivates the formation of the crack tips. The evaluation of grinding results in terms of surface tons per kw-hr, based upon screen analysis, involves an assumption of the surface area of the subsieve product, which may cause important errors. The evaluation in terms of kw-hr per net ton of —200 mesh produced often leads to erroneous results when grinds of appreciably different fineness are compared, since the amount of —200 mesh material produced varies with the size distribution characteristics of the feed. IN the course of small seale experiments on the electrodeposition, of copper, extremely brittle deposits were obtained from electrolytes prepared by leaching calcined chalcopyrite with aqueous sulfuric acid. It was not possible to strip the metal without fracture after it had been deposited from such electrolytes onto smooth oiled copper sheets, the usual plant procedure for the production of so-called starting sheets. The embrittlement did not occur with electrolytes made either by leaching the calcine with water or by treating an acid leachate to remove iron as hydrous ferric oxide. The electrolytes which produced brittle deposits were found to contain molybdenum in concentrations of 10 to 25 mg per 1, whereas those which produced ductile deposits contained <0.5 mg per 1. Synthetic electrolytes having the composition: Cu", 40 gpl; Fe", 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; Fe3+, 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; and H,SO,, 10 to 50 gpl, were prepared from reagent-grade salts; by adding ammonium molybdate, the embrittling effect of the higher concentrations of molybdenum (VI) was strikingly confirmed. The brittle deposits contained up to 0.03 pct Mo. The importance of oxidation state of the molybdenum was demonstrated when the electrolyte containing it was circulated continuously through a bed of fine copper metal during deposi- tion. Under these reducing conditions, the cathode deposit was ductile and molybdenum could not be detected. Molybdenum has not been recognized as one of the metals causing embrittlement of copper nor is it listed among the usual impurities. In most elec-trowinning plants there is a purification step which removes iron from the leachate before electrolysis. In these cases molybdenum would be coprecipitated with hydrous ferric oxide. In the case of the large leaching plant at Chuquicamata, Chile, where the leachate is reported to contain considerable molybdenum, it would be reduced to a lower oxidation state during removal of chlorine by means of cement copper. This may explain why the embrittling effect of molybdenum has not been reported previously. Moreover, in copper refining plants where soluble anodes have been prepared by a high temperature smelting process, it is most unlikely that any molybdenum would remain with the copper, whereas the calcines in this work were prepared in a fluidized bed reactor at a temperature not exceeding 720°C. The following notes are taken from results obtained on a standard 25-ft. Hancock jig1 tested during regular operation in the Bonne Terre mill of the St. Joseph Lead Co. The object of the tests was to determine the conditions for most effective work, and the nature of products that could be made. The material treated was sized between 9-mm. and 2-mm. round-hole screens, and was constant throughout the experiments. Three products were made, concentrates from the first three hutches, middlings from the fourth and fifth, and tailing from the sixth. The middlings were crushed in one pair of Allis-Chalmers Style B, 30 by 14-in. rolls, and elevated with the original ore to the 2-mm. screens, oversize of which formed the jig feed. While this arrangement was very simple, it gave rise to undesirable crowding of the circuit. Table 1 shows tonnage and assay values of the jig feed and products at the beginning of the experiments, and brings out the excessively large amount of middlings, comprising 63.3 per cent. of the total material fed to the jig. The rolls, being heavily overloaded, did very little crushing, a screen analysis of the product showing that only 27 per cent., or 128 tons, was crushed fine enough to pass to the tables. The remaining 347 tons returned to the jig with 400 tons of original ore. At .times, this overcrowding became much worse, and the tonnage in circuit grew to enormous proportions. The preparation of a sufficient quantity of high-purity copper for extensive laboratory use in the study of impurity effects has been an integral part of a research program in progress at the Central Research Laboratory of the American Smelting and Refining Co. for the past several years. Initially the degree of purity desired was that necessary to meet two essential requirements for experimental accuracy: (I) no impurity was to be present in the copper in an amount capable of producing a detectable effect on the properties to be studied, (2) even the minor changes in propertties caused by the addition of extremely small amounts of individual elements were to be measured without significant interference from contaminants. In the course of the investigation, evidence has accumulated to justify the conclusion that this copper is of exceptional purity; in fact, no impurity can be detected by any chemical method or spectrographic technique known to the authors. The present paper describes the method of production of the copper and presents some of its properties. Preparation oF High-purity Copper The elimination of impurities from commercial electrolytic copper is accomplished by a three-step purification process. The first operation consists of an electrolysis through a purified CuSO4-H2SO4 electrolyte using bagged anodes, low current density (5 amp. per sq. ft.) and low tem- perature (25°C max.). The electrolyte is prepared from commercial Cu2SO4 and is purified by heating the solution and adding I gram Fe as Fe2(SO4)3 to each 100 grams dissolved copper; sufficient hydrated oxide of copper, prepared from Cu2SO4 and NaOH, is supplied to precipitate Fe(OH)3, which carries down arsenic, antimony, tin, selenium, tellurium and other minor constituents. Silver and remaining traces of lead are removed by addition of Na2S to the acidified filtrate, which is then reatered after standing hot overnight. The cold solution is made up to 30 grams per liter Cu and 150 grams per liter H2SO4 and introduced without addition agents into the electrolytic system, which consists of a double row of hard-rubber battery boxes with the inside webbing and partitions removed, arranged in seven steps of ascending height. Electrolyte is uniformly supplied to the two highest cells by glass siphons operating from a constant-level reservoir, and flows by gravity through the bank of seven cells, entering each at the bottom and leaving at the top. Glass air lifts continuously supply the returning liquid to the constant-level reservoir for recirculation. Each cell contains three 4 3/4 by 4 3/8 by 1-in anodes cast from high-quality electrolytic wirebar copper, various lots of which have been used with equal success. The anodes are pinned to sheet copper hangars shaped to prevent crawl of the electrolyte to the multiple-wired bus bars—which would result in fouling of the contacts—-and hang inside wool flannel bags stretched over open wood frames. As a raw material, prereduced pellets can be considered symptomatic of the quiet revolution taking place in the quality and grade of blast furnace burdens for the past decade. In 1954, the average analysis of ores from U.S. ranges in the Great Lakes area was 50.86% Fe (natural), 10.22% SiO2, and 10.90% moisture; ten years later, the average was 56.67% Fe (natural), 8.13% SiO2, and 6.17% moisture. The advance in Canada was even more pronounced in a lesser number of years. In 1957 the average product of Canadian ore-producing areas was 51.62% Fe (natural), 8.59% Si02, and 8.02% moisture; in 1964, the average grade was 59.59% Fe (natural), 6.27% SiO2, and 3.94% moisture.2 These dramatic data are testimony to the giant strides made in iron ore improvement, and the next logical step is prereduction. Prereduction can well be considered as a beneficiation step in which oxygen is the gangue. Since the ultimate objective of milling and smelting is iron metal, non-metallic constitutents in general, whether oxygen or silica, are contaminants. The past and continuing attack aimed at lowering the silica content of concentrates is succeeding. One need only thumb through the Grade Name listings of the American Iron Ore AssociationVo note that virtually all commercial pellets contain less than 8% silica, many are lower than 6%, and a few below 45%. With natural technical evolution, it is expected "many" rather than "few" will ultimately be in the last category and further mechanical concentration will have reached the point of diminishing returns. At this level, oxygen would constitute the only major diluent worthy of attack.

ALTHOUGH I have already described to you the procedure for making assays of the ores (a thing that is not very different from what I wish to describe in the present chapter), I shall repeat it in substance, with the addition of the method of assaying gold, in order to tell you certain rules for weights which are very necessary to know, and above all in order to demonstrate to you the method of refining a small quantity of silver by the use of a cupel, and in order to tell you how there are (I find) only two ways that are customary for bringing silver to fineness. One is that of the cupel [copella] and the other is that of the cupeling hearth [cenneraccio], one for a small and the other for a large quantity. But although they are called by two names and appear to be two methods, the aim and the procedure of both is actually the same. Nor do I know of other difference between them than the carrying out of the method and the large or small quantity. Cupeling is a very useful thing for anyone who handles gold or silver to know. Indeed it is necessary, because it not only throws light on the work that is to be done but it also shows the truth [55] and the correct weights in large quantities. It is a quicker and easier way of bringing the work to the desired perfection than is afforded by the method for large quantities. Therefore, as you have heard, it is used in making assays in order to know exactly what quantity of the substance of silver or gold is in copper and lead or in ores, as well as in that melted material which remains among the charcoal and ashes. In short, it is the measure by which you have the certainty and safety of knowing that you have not been deceived by art or by your workmen, who had no other interest than their simple wages. Many workmen are found who are so untrustworthy that they no sooner get control of a thing than they think up some fraud, and even though some know that they must give an accounting they do not restrain themselves, although sometimes they would perhaps act with greater security and more deception than they do if they did not fear detection.
