In situ mining and dump leaching has been practiced for years. Recent environmental concern over conventional mining and milling techniques has rendered in situ mining more attractive. While there are many environmental advantages to in situ mining, there are disadvantages which, if ignored, can lead to environmental damages, followed by stringent control. The environmental advantages and disadvantages of the various types of in situ mining operations are discussed. Current legislation and regulations governing in situ mining are cited, together with a suggested program of environmental monitoring designed to protect the mining company as well as the environment. Suggestions are made for possible solution of existing pollution problems associated with previous mining activities by heap-leaching techniques. Present and indicated control of subsurface injection is traced, because of the many similarities in philosphy and monitoring requirements to in situ mining.

This paper presents a series of equations for mechanical ball wear, relating parameters of ball size, mill speed, and mill diameter. The fundamental equation, Eq. 12, presented here is introduced to correlate these basic parameters and thus define and clarify the concept of ball wear. This equation is offered as a general rule, which may be modified to apply to individual problems of grinding. BALL wear as observed in grinding installations is the combined result of mechanical wear and corrosion. Corrosion should be a linear function of the ball surface available. Ball corrosion, however, has been studied so little that its effect, although of great importance, cannot be included in the analyses given here. It is generally accepted, although not sharply defined, that ball wear in mills running at low (cascading) speeds is a function of the ball surface available. Accordingly, the wear of a single ball may be considered to be a homogeneous, linear function of its surface and of the distance traveled. In a mill running at a low speed, grinding is the result of rubbing action within the ball mass and between the ball mass and mill liners. When the speed of the mill is gradually increased toward the critical, the impacting effect of freely falling balls becomes increasingly prominent in comparison with the rubbing action. Reduction of ore takes place partly by rubbing, partly by impact. The share of the freely falling balls in the reduction of ore reaches its practical maximum at a speed somewhat less than the critical; at that speed grinding by rubbing has decreased to a low value. It may be reasonable to think that size reduction by freely falling balls should reach its theoretical maximum at the critical speed, if the fall of the balls were not hindered by the shell of the mill beyond the top point; grinding by rubbing would cease at the critical speed. As a first approximation, wear of freely falling balls may be considered to be a homogeneous, linear function of the force at which they strike pieces of rock and other balls at the toe of the ball charge. The force equals mass times acceleration. The mass of a ball is a function of d3 and its acceleration is a function of the peripheral speed of the mill. Preliminary estimates indicate that world consumption of petroleum and related fuels in 1938 will be close to 1,908,000,000 bbl., or approximately 7,000,000 bbl. less than in 1937. This total does not include military consumption in foreign countries, which for obvious reasons is not made public. Foreign military consumption in any one year, however, is approximately represented by the difference between the total production of petroleum and related fuels and the "partial total" consumption above noted, after adding any decrease, or subtracting any increase in stocks in the United States. Fig. 1 illustrates this "difference" and shows that in 1937 and 1938, owing to the wars in China and Spain and the possibility of armed conflict in Central Europe, foreign military consumption—and possibly additions to foreign stocks—increased nearly 70,000,000 bbl. in 1937 over 1936 and remained at this high rate throughout 1938. No official information on foreign oil stocks is available to the writers. Table 1, recently published, purports to give the oil in storage in some of the European countries, but it is not known whether the figures include oil stocks for military purposes. It should be noted that with the annexation by Germany of Austria and part of Czechoslovakia the consumption of the country has increased to 53,000,000 bbl., which is about 36,000,000 short of the German produc-

The paper outlines the parameters required for an estimation of the size of chain pillars for longwall coal mining. The principal parameters are: stress distribution around the edge of the extracted coal panel, strength properties and geometry of the pillars. The principal thrust of the paper is directed toward correlating the chain pillar strength to the magnitude and direction of strata load expected to act on the pillars. A brief review of the pillar strength formulae pertinent to chain pillar stability is given. The chain pillars are categorized as 'yielding' or 'stiff', depending on the duty required of them. The coal measure strata is classified as 'soft' or 'hard' conditions, the degree of competence of the roof and floor greatly influencing the caving characteristics of the gob and the stability of the roof chain pillars.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) IN order to obtain data on the thermal effect of the blast-furnace jacket and oil the water consumption in these jackets a series of tests were run on the 56 by 180 in. blast furnaces at the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Great Falls, Mont. The arrangement of the jacket is shown in the transverse section of one of the furnaces (Fig. 1) on which the tests were made. The nose, spout, and breast jackets have independent water supplies and discharges. The end and side jackets are connected in pairs, as regards water supply, the feed water entering at the bottom of the lower jacket and overflowing into the bottom of the jacket immediately above it, and discharging into an independent overflow pipe for each pair of jackets. Tests were run on the main side and end jackets, the breast jacket, the spout, and the nose. Measurements were taken of the quantity of water discharged per minute and the rise in temperature of the water in its passage through the jacket. The product of these two results, expressed in the proper units, evidently gives the number of units of heat removed per minute by the water. Sufficient work was done on each type of jacket to determine its behavior under different conditions, and the results from each set of conditions were checked by repeating the work from three to six times.

In a letter to Prof. L. P. Breckenridge, chairman, urging the continua-tion of the Fuel Conservation Committee of the Engineering Council, Edwin Ludlow calls attention to the millions of tons of culm in the an-thracite region that can be utilized in properly equipped plants and the electricity generated transmitted to. New York, Philadelphia, and other nearby cities. He says: "Experiments have shown the economic value of No. 4 Buckwheat, which passes through a 1/16-in. mesh and over a 1/32-in. mesh. Culm passing through a 1/32-in- mesh is pulverized until it passes through a 300 mesh and is then burned under boilers. Two plants of this kind are now in successful operation in the anthracite region. Another rather interesting experiment was using 30 per cent. of this pulverized coal with 70 per cent. of oil in the generation of steam in the place of pure oil. This utilization of the fine anthracite, which has always been a waste product and thrown away, is not only fuel conservation in its truest sense but in the case of a bituminous strike, when no strike is contemplated in the anthracite field, will furnish fuel to manufacturing plants that otherwise would be obliged to shut down."

When lime and magnesia are used as fluxes in the smelting of titaniferous ores fluid, digestible slags low in iron oxide and high in titanium dioxide are produced. The mineral phases present in such slags are (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2, CaTiO3, and minor amounts of silicate glass (or its devitrification products). The flux additions are added to the ore in relative amounts to crystallize a ratio of (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to CaTiO2, of near the eutectic proportions of 60 pct (Fe,Mg)0.2TiO2 and 40 pct CaTiO3. FeO-Ti02 (ilmenite) remains present in the slag until the FeO content is reduced to approximately 8 pct. Op- timum slag composition is obtained by reducing the FeO content to between 2 and 6 pct. Continued reduction shifts he (Fe,Mg) 0.2Ti02 to oxygen deficient structures classified as MgTi30e and MgTi204. Further reduction yields titanium oxycarbides and freezes the melts.

The activation energy for steady state creep above -500°C is observed to be independent of the applied stress although it varies from -67 kcal per mole at 2 at. pct Si to -100 kcal per mole at 11 at. pct Si due to changes in crystallographic order. The magnitude of the activation energy, by comparison with Fe-A1 alloys, indicates FeSi type of order in certain alloys. X-ray results confirmed the presence of FeSi type of order. It is proposed that dislocation climb is the rate controlling mechanism for all the alloys. It has been demonstrated that when a diffusion mechanism is the rate controlling process, the formation of a superlattice in brass,1 Fe3A1,2 Ni3Fe,3-5 and Feco6 1) increases the creep resistance, and 2) increases the activation energy for steady state creep. Furthermore, a study of creep in Fe-15 to 20 at. pct A1 alloys7 has revealed that as the alloy composition approaches the long-range order field, there is an increase in the activation energy for steady state creep which is thought to be due to an increase in short range order. Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys are similar in that they both form the DO3 superlattice in which aluminum or silicon atoms have only iron atoms as first and second nearest neighbors. There are, however, two important differences between the alloy systems: 1) The superlattice formation at -350°C commences at -10 at. pct si8 as compared to -20 at. pct Al,9 and 2) Fe-A1 alloys form a FeAl (B2 type) super-lattice where aluminum atoms have all iron first nearest neighbors even at 22 at. pct Al, but so far no similar FeSi superlattice has been observed. With the similarity between Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys in mind, alloys of iron with 2 to 11 at. pct Si were examined for variations with composition of the activation energy for steady state creep and of creep strength. The temperature range of greatest interest was above 1/2 TM (TM is the absolute melting temperature) where it is usually observed that diffusion is the rate controlling process. A subsidiary X-ray investigation of the Fe-Si system was undertaken in an attempt to define the position of the order-disorder boundary as a function of cooling rate. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS a) Creep. Specimens whose gage length was 1.5 in. and with a cross-section 0.04 by 0.08 in. were strained in tension by a lever-arm arrangement, and the load was adjusted between each creep test to maintain constant stress. The apparatus and mode of operation have been fully described in a previous publication.7 As each test produced a creep strain of 0.25 pct, the variation in stress during the test was negligible. Creep strain was measured at the end of one of the alloy steel grips by a displacement transducer with the out-of-balance potential being recorded on a variable speed recorder. The full-scale deflection of the recorder could be varied in steps to give limits of sensitivity of between 0.1 and 0.001 pct creep strain. The alloys, Table I, were made available by the Metallurgical Department, National Physical Laboratory (N.P.L.), england,10 and by the Research Department, General Electric Co. (G.E.), Schenectady, N.Y. They were hot worked at -850°C, warm worked at 550° to 650°C, and recrystallized in vacuum at -750°C to give a grain diameter of -0.1 mm. All the alloys had a very low impurity content; those from the N.P.L., for which a complete analysis is available,&apos;&apos; show carbon less than 0.026 pct, manganese less than 0.006 pct, and oxygen plus nitrogen less than 0.0024 pct. b) X-ray Procedure. A General Electric XRD-5 X-ray set with a focussing lithium fluoride mono-chromator in the diffracted beam, and a pulse height analyzer to eliminate harmonic wavelengths of the cobalt radiation, was used to investigate the structure of several very fine grained (grain diameter <.01 mm) Fe-Si alloys after the following heat treatments: 1) Quenched from 700°C, 2) slow cooled from 650°C (-40°C per hr), and 3) very slowly cooled from 400° to 100°C (10°C per hr with a 24 hr anneal every 100°C). The method of obtaining the diffraction pattern over the range of 20 from 15 to 45 deg was to count for at least 100 sec every l/3 deg with a slit subtending 1 deg in 20 at the focus; the probable counting error was less than 2 pct.

DURING the past several years the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture and the ductility values often can be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging. The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established beyond reasonable doubt that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary abnormal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, the Steel Founders&apos; Society of America has, since Nov. 1, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-ductility effects and porosity.

PUBLIC lands in Florida were first withdrawn from entry by President Taft on July 2, 1910, as a conservation measure because of their possible phosphate content. The reserve thus established was subsequently modified by further withdrawals and by restorations, so that on Jan. 1, 1934,&apos; it contained 66,796 acres, of which only a small part had been defi-nitely classified. The reserved land was in scattered parcels, ranging from less than 40 acres to 320 or more, distributed in many counties. For administrative purposes and for final disposal of any of the numerous parcels, mineral classification of the land is legally necessary. In 1934 and 1935 the United States Geological Survey, under two successive grants from the Public Works Administration, prospected some 83 tracts of these lands in Polk County, comprising in all about 3300 acres, and six tracts comprising 240 acres in Citrus and Marion Counties. The tracts in Polk County were all in the so-called land-pebble field and the others in the hard-rock field. The Survey field party was under the direction of P. V. Roundy, from whose unpublished report the material in this paper is largely taken. The foreman of the prospecting crew was J. H. Wingate of Zephyrhills, Fla. The individual tracts were identified through the cooperation of the General Land Office, by transitman Hugh B. Crawford. This prospecting work fitted well the classification adopted for Public Works projects in general: it could not he done on any considerable scale under the Survey&apos;s usual appropriations; it gave employment to unem-ployed labor; and it may be expected ultimately to repay the Government in royalties more than the cost of the exploration.

"It shall be within the discretion of the Board of Directors to establish a medal to be known as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal to be awarded at such a time &apos;and under such rules as may be determined by the Board of Directors, for Distinguished Achievement in Mining Administration." The establishment of this medal was announced at the annual meeting in February, 1932, the term "mining" being defined in its broad sense to include metallurgy and petroleum. The members of the Charles F. Rand Foundation Award Committee, of which J. V. W. Reynders is Chairman, are listed on page 12. In both 1938 and 1939, the Committee gave consideration to the question of choosing a medalist but in each year the decision was reached to give financial help to other projects as an alternative. In 1938, publication of a monograph on "Struc¬ture of Ore Deposits in the Continen¬tal Framework" and of a booklet en¬titled "The Call for Endowment" was financed; and in 1939, a special appro¬priation was made to defray the ex¬ penses of special speakers for Affiliated Student Societies of the Institute. In 1940, the Committee elected to nominate a candidate for the medal and unanimously selected Robert, Crooks Stanley, Chairman of the Board of the International Nickel Co. This recom¬mendation was approved by the Board of Directors and Mr. Stanley became the first recipient of the medal. Citation for Award to Robert Crook,, Stanley. THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, .as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard existing from the inhalation of dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blast-ing, granite-cutting, or what not. Advancement to date in the United States in prevention and treat-ment has been slow, yet the record shows that quantitative methods for determining the degree of hazard and means for decreasing it were being developed as far back as 25 years ago; and that more rapid progress may be looked for from now on. MUCH has been written and said recently about the methods used and materials and equipment employed in building the long tubes that criss-cross a great part of the [ ] united States, like the pattern of a spider&apos;s web. This paper will discuss the fundamentals of design of these lines from the economic as well as the engineering view-point, pointing out the effect of the volumes transported, and the load factor at which they are operated, on the unit costs of transportation, as well as the effects on costs of the character of the fluids the lines are called upon to handle. Generally speaking, crude-oil pipe lines carry oil from the producing fields to the [ ] refineries. Sometimes part of the journey is by pipe line to a coastal point and tank ships are employed for the rest of the trip. The main lines of directional flow of crude oil through pipe lines in the United States are shown on Fig. I, but this, of course, does not always show individual pipe lines. Densities and distributions of dislocations in plastically bent germanium crystals before and after annealing were studied. In the bent and annealed crystals, the theoretical relationship between radius of curvature and density of dislocations is confirmed. Before annealing, however, more dislocations are present than required, and these are distributed with a minimum at the neutral axis and maxima at the top and bottom surfaces. On annealing, three significant changes occur in the bent bars: 1) the average dislocation density is reduced, presumably by the annihilation of opposite signs; 2) dislocations migrate from the high density outside regions toward the low density neutral axis, thus producing the equilibrium distribution of dislocations; and 3) a polygonized structure is formed by movement of the dislocations into walls normal to the slip plane. ETCHING to reveal edge dislocations&apos;-" offers a unique opportunity to study, in germanium single crystals, the functioning of dislocations in plastic deformation. Plastic bending is ideally suited to this purpose because it produces a static array of edge dislocations in an ideally plastic material which is predictable from the theory." " Nye" has given a rather complete treatment of the geometry of bent crystals in terms of dislocations. The density of excess dislocations is related to the radius of curvature of the slip plane of a bent crystal, as shown in Fig. 1, assuming the absence of macroscopic elastic stresses. The curvature of any plane in the zone of the bend axis is found by resolving the Burgers vector into that plane, so that for the usual case where the slip plane is inclined at some angle 0 to the neutral plane of the bar, the equation applies, with T equal to the radius of curvature of the neutral plane of the bent crystal. Recent successful applications of emulsion flotation suggested that a detailed study of some of the physicochemical aspects of the process was warranted. The objective of the current research was to provide general information on the electrokinetic properties of emulsion drops of the type commonly used in oxide mineral flotation. Combinations of the parafin oil Nujol and several long-chain reagents in water were studied with respect to the effect of pH on the surface and zeta potentials. It war concluded that for emulsion drops in the presence of a long-chain reagent but in the absence of any other electrolyte which is adsorbed at the oil-water interface, the surface potential will be some two to four times the value of the zeta potential. During the last decade there has been a revival of interest in the so-called agglomeration, or emulsion flotation (in this paper the term emulsion flotation will be used), process. In this flotation technique, a neutral hydrocarbon oil, together with longcnain reagents, usually of a polar-nonpolar structure, are added to the pulp to function as collectors for specific minerals. The combination of oil and longchain reagent is either emulsified prior to addition to the pulp, or in the pulp itself, and the resulting collector species is an oil-in-water emulsion of a neutral hydrocarbon oil emulsified by polar-nonpolar long-chain reagents. Emulsion flotation has been used successfully in the treatment of ores containing iron, manganese,&apos; and titanium oxides. 2 Two other major and long established applications of emulsion flotation are the flotation of coal and Florida phosphate ores. In recent years, emulsion flotation has been particularly successful in the treatment of ores containing oxide minerals which slime readily and, consequently, are difficult to treat by conventional flotation processes.
