News has just been received that Flight Commander William T. Hall, a Junior Member of-the Institute, was killed in action on Saturday, May 19, 1917. According to the' Toronto Star, Commander Hall was 24 years of age, a native of Toronto, and a grandson of the late William Kersteman. During the four years of his course in mining at the School of Practical Science, Toronto University, he passed every examination with honors. When war was first declared Commander Hall endeavored to join the artillery as an officer, and for that purpose secured a provisional lieu- tenancy with a Hamilton battery, but he did not receive an overseas appointment, and on being graduated as a mining engineer in 1915, he was offered a position in Chile, which he accepted. He left Toronto on May 27, 1915, and was engaged in Chile as a mining engineer for nearly a year. In the latter part of April, 1916, he decided to offer himself again for service at the front. He crossed the Andes and sailed for Liverpool, where he landed on May 13, 1916. On May 27, 1916, Capt. Hall was given a commission as lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps. He went to the front on Sept. 1, 1916, and remained there continuously. On April 4, 1917, he was promoted from lieutenant to the rank of flight commander. No details of how Commander Hall came by his death have as yet been received.

This paper may be divided into two main parts: (1) analysis and data to show that Eq. 6 adequately correlates the authors' experimental data, and (2) the assertion that Eq. 20 "should permit scale-up with data taken from one pipe diameter for Newtonian, inelastic non-Newtonian, and viscoelastic fluids, such as dilute polymer fracturing fluids, which produce considerable pressure reductions." The authors might well recommend that this broad grouping of fluid types could be correlated by using Eq. 6 (requiring data from at least two pipe diameters). On the other hand, Eq. 20 is only shown to be adequate for conditions within the range of the present data set. Specifically, predictions by Eq. 20 for diameter scale-up to casing sizes would give larger deviations than implied in Table 2, and scale-up for some other fluids that give large drag reduction could be grossly in error. The description of a class of fluids "which produce a diameter family of straight parallel lines on a log (d?p/4L) vs log (8 v/d) plot. . ." defines a necessary condition for using Eq. 6; i.e., that s shall be constant for each fluid. The proposal that Eq. 20 is applicable to turbulent flow of such fluids is equivalent to saying that the spacing of these parallel lines, with A being constant, will be found to correspond to m = -1.20 for all such fluids. Table 1 shows the values of m derived from data on 16 non-Newtonian fluids. The key statement of this paper is that the diameter exponents "do not vary significantly from . . . -1.20." In statistical terms, this says that the m value for each fluid, which was obtained from all the measurements made on that fluid. has not been shown to be different from the arithmetic mean of the m values for the 16 fluids tested. This implies that the group mean, -1.20, is a more reliable value to use for an individual fluid than is the m value derived from the data on that fluid alone. No statistical test is described to support the key statement that the diameter exponents do not vary significantly from -1.20. Such a test would have to take into account that each individual m value is shown to correlate the pressure gradients for its fluid, with only about 3 percent standard deviation over the diameter range covered. That is, the m value is not the result of a single independent measurement. Thus, it would not be sufficient, or valid, to compare the deviation of one of the m values with the variance of the 16 values of m about their mean. An alternative interpretation of the key statement is that the diameter exponents do not vary appreciably from -1.20; i.e., that using -1.20 does not cause serious inaccuracy. Table 2 seems to be offered in support of such an assertion. However, such a statistical treatment (1) is unnecessary and (2) cannot lead to any valid scale-up generalization. The amount of error introduced by using a 1"wrong" value of diameter exponent — i.e., -1.20 instead of m — is determined by Eq. 6. The ratio of the pressures predicted by Eqs. 6 and 20 for scale-up from ds in small pipe to d, in casing is The pressure for 30-percent calcium carbonate slurry (m = -1.112) in 10-in. ID pipe would be predicted 30 percent higher by Eq. 6 than by Eq. 20, if based on tests in 0.5-in. ID pipe. Changes in magnetic properties with particle size are used to study the precipitation process in a Cu-Co alloy. In particular, the effect of a field during aging in producing anisotropy is shown to occur entirely during the growth of the particles, after precipitation is complete. HEAT-treatment in a magnetic field is done commercially to improve the magnetic properties of a number of materials. These can be divided into solid-solution alloys and precipitation alloys. The Permalloys are representative of the first type, and magnetic annealing greatly increases their maximum permeability. On the other hand, in precipitation alloys such Alnico 5 the important result is an increase in maximum energy product. The effect of the field in all cases is to bring about an additional magnetic anisotropy, uniaxial in nature, which makes the hysteresis loop more upright when measured in the direction in which the field was applied. The structural origin of the anisotropy brought about by magnetic annealing is not well understood. In the solid solution alloys, one possible explanation is based on ordering.' Another possibility is the orientation of like-atom pairs.' The precipitation systems known to respond to magnetic heat treatment are Alnico 2, in which the effect was first discovered," Alnico 5, cobalt ferrite (oxide),' and Cu-Co alloys.3 n these materials, the field affects the precipitation process itself in some way. Under a cooperative agreement between United States Bureau of Mines and the Truax-Traer Coal Company, some operating-scale experiments have been made with the cyclone thickener in the preparation plant of the Shamrock No. 1 mine at Kayford, West Virginia. These tests were made with a 14-in. cyclone of the type developed by the Dutch State Mines in Limburg. It was applied experimentally to the thickening of solids in washery water to obtain performance data to show the range of sizes that may be recovered and other operating characteristics that would indicate the field of usefulness of this device in coal preparation practice. This is a progress report only. It covers results obtained in a series of 17 tests of the operation of what has been considered a unit of commercial size operating on suspensions of fine coal mixed with a relatively small amount of freeimpurities. The underflow material, after further dewatering in centrifuges, is a marketable grade of coal.

IN the spring of 1905 I was employed by Messrs. Bradley and Requa, under our fellow member, Thomas Cox, on the mill plans for the Nevada Consolidated, when an opportunity came to go to the Philippines to erect a small mill on the property of the Benguet Consolidated. This I accepted, expecting to be away eight months or so, but it was seven years before I got back. .I sailed in May, on the Coptic, having as room-mate as far as Kobe, A. E. Drucker, who was going out to Korea for the Oriental Consolidated. It was the first trans-ocean trip for either of us, and we had some rather unusual experiences. This was toward the close of the Russo-Japanese war and the Russian fleet was known to be on the way from Suez to Asiatic waters, but it was a matter of doubt whether they would risk a passage between Japan and the mainland, or take the longer but obviously safer route outside of Japan. The Coptic carried much contraband of war for Japan, so naturally did not care to meet this fleet. No definite word being available at Honolulu, we went to the Midway Islands, but the cable station there had very little information to offer, so we proceeded cautiously toward Japan. On the last afternoon out, we steamed due north at half speed for several hours, and finally sneaked into Yokohama at night, to learn that ' the Russian fleet had met the Japanese the day before and had been annihilated. We sailed over the spot in the Sea of Japan a week later, and when we got to Manila we found three of the Russian boats interned and being guarded by the monitor Monadnock and a cruiser. This was only a matter of form, as the Russians were only too glad to be there for the rest of the war, and the boats could not have gone far anyway, for they were literally shot to pieces. The Admiral's flagship had a hole within 3 ft. of the water line, for ward, through which a man could enter by stooping.

Annealed and electrolytically polished pure iron was oxidized between 650° and 850°C at oxygen pressures of 0.1 to 2 microns Hg. Electron optical studies showed that oxidation occurs discontinuously over the surface and orients crystallographically with the substructure of the metal grains. IN previous papers', " the authors described the formation of oxide films on high purity iron at norrnal pressures and at temperatures below 300°C. Electron optical studies showed that the oxide film consisted of many individual oxide crystallites having nearly random orientation on each metal grain. The size of the oxide crystallites depended upon the temperature and upon the extent of oxidation. In these studies the crystallite size varied from 250 to 1800Å. Recently, Bardolle and Benard3 studied the crystal habit of the oxide crystallites formed on Armco iron between 650" and 850°C in what might be defined as a "poor vacuum" atmosphere in which the pressure could be varied between 10-1 to 10-3 mm of Hg. Their results showed that, at 850°C and a vacuum of l0-2 to 10-3 mm of Hg, a few well oriented nuclei of oxide were formed on the metal grains. At pressures between l0-1 to 10-2 mm of Hg, many oriented nuclei of oxide were formed. At 750°C the metal surface was bright although an oxide was present. Unfortunately, the extent of oxidation, the oxygen pressure, and the influence of carbon in the metal were not determined, and it was, therefore, impossible to give a theoretical interpretation to the very beautiful light micrographs. Bardolle and Benard used the light microscope to determine the crystal habit of the oxide and X-ray diffraction to determine the orientation relationships. It was believed that the use of controlled amounts of oxidation at high temperature is an important method for the study of the initial stages of oxidation of metals at high temperatures. This paper presents the first results of an electron optical study of this problem for iron. Since the electron microscope and electron-diffraction methods using stripped oxide films and surface replicas yielded finer details of the crystal habit and structure of oxide film, these methods were used in this study. Two types of iron having different carbon contents were used: Puron and Armco* iron. A com- parison of the results for these materials made possible a study of the influence of the surface oxide-carbon reaction on the initial stages of oxidation. Before discussing the experimental results, the thermodynamic equilibria of 1—the oxidation reaction, 2—the surface oxide-carbon reaction, and 3—the solubility of oxygen in iron, will be considered. In addition, it is important to consider the kinetic-theory predictions on the rate of collision of oxygen with the iron surface. Thermodynamic and Kinetic-Theory Calculations Only one type of reaction is usually considered in the oxidation of iron at normal pressures at high temperatures: Fe(a) + 1/2O2(g) = FeO(s) 3Fe(a) + 2O2(g) = Fe3O4(s) 2Fe(a) +3/2O2(g) = a-Fe2O3(s). [11 However, two other reactions may occur: FeO(s) + C (solid solution in Fe) + Fe(a) + CO(g) [2] and Fe(a) + O2(g) e Fe(a) (solid solution of 0,). His face wreathed in smiles, J. Richard Lucas, Chairman of the Keynote Session, conceded that "the papers appeared to have been of some interest." This was a modest description of the opening day of technical sessions at the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibition, October 13 to 15, in Tampa, Fla. The auditorium had capacity for 800 spectators and there was hardly a vacant seat visible. The topic, Resource Development of the Fertilizer Minerals, was covered in four authoritative papers. H. S. Ten Eyck set the stage. Resources are always viewed in relation to future requirements, and these depend largely on population. If the population trend continues, the world's 3.3 billion people will increase to 6.7 billion people by the year 2000. About 70% of this increased population will be in developing areas which are not capable of supplying sufficient food and fiber for their needs. Fertilizer is a means of bridging the crop shortage. Projections of fertilizer requirements by 1970 are from 53 million to 67.5 million long tons of plant nutrient which compares with 1964 consumption of 37.7 million tons. Looking ahead to 1980, the growth continues with an estimated demand of 80 million to 113 million tons combined of N P and K.

HOT metal is commonly transported from the blast furnace to the open hearth by one or the other of two general methods: (1) by hot-metal ladles, usually in conjunction with a stationary mixer, or; (2) by means of mixer-type ladle cars, taking the place of both the hot-metal ladles and the stationary mixer. In both cases, the use of transfer ladles for charging the metal into the open-hearth furnaces is necessary. The American Rolling Mill Co. at its Middletown division, adopted hot metal practice on. June 2, 1928. The pig iron is produced' in a .blast furnace about 11 miles from the open-hearth furnaces, and is trans- ported in Pugh-type mixer cars having a capacity of 150 gross tons each. Three cars are in service and handle the delivery of hot metal to the pig machine and the open-hearth furnaces. The capacity of the blast furnace is 550 tons and casts are made every four hours.

Phase equilibria of the zinc-rich portion of the Zn-Fe-A1 system containing up to 20.0 wt pct Fe and Al have been investigated at 600°C (1112°F), 450°C (842°F), and room temperature by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. The phase relationships were found to involve only those phases present in the three binary systems. THE presence of small quantities of aluminum (approx. 0.2 wt pct*) in zinc galvanizing baths is known to suppress the formation of Zn-Fe alloy layers within the coating.' As part of an extended investigation of this suppression effect and the alloy reactions involved, the zinc-rich corner of the Zn-Fe-A1 equilibrium system containing up to 20.0 pct Fe and Al was determined at 600°C (1112°F), 450° F (842° F), and room temperature. The present paper reports the findings of this study. The constitution of the Zn-Fe system has been reported by Raynor2 based mainly on the work of Schramm3-3 and Truesdale et a1.6 The solid solubility of iron in zinc is extremely small and lies between 0.0009 and 0.0028 pct in the range 150° to 400°C (302°to752°F). Within the temperature and composition range of interest, a eutectic reaction involving nearly pure zinc, liquid = Zn+FeZn13, is observed at about 419°C (786° F) and 0.018 pct Fe along with a peritectic reaction, FeZn7+ liquid e FeZn13, at 530°C (986° F) and 6.2 pct Fe. The latter reaction is sluggish due to the large proportipn of solid phase involved in the transformation. Halla et al.,7 identified the compound FeZn13 as monoclinic with a = 13.68, b = 7.63, c = 5.07, and B = 128°44'. The structure of FeZn7 was reported by Bablik, et al.,8 to be of hexagonal symmetry, belonging to either the C6v = C6/m mc or D46h = C6/mc space group. Divensions of the unit cell are a = 12.81A and c = 57.6a. The Zn-A1 diagram as composed by Raynor9 and later Gebhardt10 is characterized by a eutectic decomposition, liquid 382°C (720°F) and 95.0 pct Zn and a eutectoid decomposition, at 275° (527°F) and 78.0 pct Zn. The eutectoid reaction cannot be suppressed permanently by quenching. Above 275° (527° F), a and a' co-exist in a closed miscibility gap between 31.6 and 78.0 pct Zn. Both phases are fcc and have nearly the same lattice parameter. The maximum solubility of aluminum in zinc (B) is approximately 1.0 pct at the eutectic temperature. PROCEDURE Materials. The experimental alloys were prepared from both massive and powdered material. MODERN steelmaking has gradually evolved from an inefficient small-scale operation, utilizing tiny units, to a highly efficient one utilizing large units almost completely mechanized. The leading position of the United States in the steel industry is due to the possession of easily assembled high-grade raw materials and large-scale highly developed plants. Modern integrated steel operation is largely one of material handling. Mining and transportation of iron ore, coal, and fluxes, coking the coal in by-product ovens, smelting the ore with coke and limestone in blast furnaces, converting the resulting pig iron into steel in the Bessemer, or in the open hearth when supplemented with scrap, and fabricating the resulting steel ingots in the shapes of commerce all are done on a huge scale, mostly by machinery, most of the labor being employed either in operating the machine or keeping it in repair. At the same time the quality and uniformity of the product have been greatly increased by the development of scientific knowledge and operating skills. Thus, the steel industry in this country is highly developed both mechanically and technically.

The principle of airborne electroniagnetic prospecting is well-known. 'The basic geonhysicai texts in inost cases discuss the main elements involved in electromagnetic prospecting. However. there is ceriainlv iittle information available to the public concerning he present types of airborne eiectromagnerlc systenis being flown today by both contracting companies and some of the mining companies which have their own instruments. This is unfortunate since it is difficuit for those people not conducting such operations to understand thoroughly the iarge variation in the electromagnetic instrunlents available. Basically, the aeriai electromagnetic induction method utilizes a primary or transmitting coil through which is generated an alternating magnetic field at a frequents: generally of the range of 100 to 2000 cycies per sec. This primary field links with buried conductors and generates eddy currents within them. These eddy currents in themselves generate a secondary magnetic field of the same frequencv, but generally nut-of-phase with respect to the prinlarv field. This secondarv field is detected above the ground in the pick-up or receiver coil which is tuned to the frequency of the current applied to the primary transmitter coil. One of the main problems in the development of an airborne electromagnetic system is that of maintaining constant coupling between the cransmitting and receiving coil systems. Any variations in the coupling due to relative motion between the two coils will result in an in-phase signal being induced in the receiver coil. [However, any variation in the coupling does not result in an out-of-phase signal change in the receiver coil. The first airborne eiectromagnetic svsteins which were developed utilized a large prlniarv coil set up on the aircraft with the receiving coil being towed behind in a bird, generally at the end of a cable of about 500 ft. in length. It is possible with such a system to record the out-of-phase or quadrature responses more readily than the in-phase re-sponse. One system utilizes a dual frequency method, wnereby the out-of-phase responses at two frequencies are recorded. Another system used today records a single-frequency olrt-of-phase response. Recentlv home companies have succeeded in measuring from ne air both the out-of-phase and the in-phase components. The usefulness of recording in-phase is weil-known, but unfortunately this is difficult to obtain in any towed-bird system. In order to measure the true in-phase signal, the most straightforward system is that in which both the transmitter and receiver coils .Ire affixed in space so that there is little or no relarive motion between the two coils. THE FLIGHT SYSTEM The particular system which Canadian Aero Service is using at present is mounted on a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter (Fig. 1). A record of both the in-phase and out-of-phase responses is made at a frequency of 390 cycles per sec. The transmitter coil is set on a boom mounted in the front of the helicopter; the receiver is set on a tail boom extending back from the helicopter. Separation between these coils is about 65 ft. The two coils are mounted in a vertical co-axial relationship. Having the transmitting coil in a vertical plane ensures that maximurn coupling will occur with vertical conductors rather than flat-lying conductors. Having them mounted as they are in a co-axial relationship on the helicopter ensures that maximum response will occur when the flight direction is orthogonal to the strike direction of a given conductor. POSSIBLY in no other of the non-ferrous mining districts of this country has the use and develop-ment of mechanical loaders been carried to such an extent as in the "lead belt" of Southeast Missouri. It has become apparent to the four mining companies in the district that it is imperative to apply satisfactory mechanical methods to the chief remaining stage of the entire operations-mining, milling, smelting and refining-in which manual labor is still largely used to handle material in process. With increasing wages and with the reduction of the metal divisor by the extension of mining into lower-grade orebodies, the shoveling cost per ton of lead produced has become relatively so large that in an effort to reduce it there is ample justification for considerable capital expenditure. Hand shovelers load about 18 tons of ore per shift and the average grade is less than five per cent. lead. Further, the ore is relatively heavy, about 21 cu. ft. to the ton when broken, and is often so coarse and so closely compacted after shooting that it requires much more block-holing, sledging, and muscular effort to shovel than, for example, does the cherty and more granular ore of the Joplin district or the finer ore in the headings of a drift mine. No mining company desires to pay for mere back muscles if it be economically feasible to avoid it, and labor saving machinery should be susceptible of operation by older employees, who are no longer capable of the more strenuous manual occupations.

Precipitation processes occurring during both furnace cooling and aging of copper-iron albys were studied by means of electrical and magnetic measurements. On furnace cooling, two distinct stages in the precipitation process were detected; one occurring above and the other below 850° C. The kinetics of precipitation from quenched alloys were studied between 200° and 700°C. The reaction appears to be consistent with the concept of tmcleation of precipitate particles at dislocation loops formed by the clustering of quenched-in vacancies. A study Of in copper-iron alloys is particularly interesting because the combination of magnetic and electrical properties in these allovs provides a quantitative means of following the course of the precipitation reaction. C. M. Marquard—The problem of the automatic control of a grinding-classification circuit is not nearly as simple as has been indicated and it cannot be universally solved through the application of this device. The sound emanating from a ball mill such as the metallic clink of the balls against the liners can at times be misleading. The fact that the sound level due to the balls hitting the liners may be at a minimum does not necessarily mean that the mill is properly loaded. I have in mind an ore we treat that has a soft talcy gangue. In every milling plant there are transportation lags due to the time it takes the ore to travel from the mill bins to the ball mill. In many plants there may be several different transportation lags due to varying distances of bins from ball mill. These transportation lags can most seriously affect the operation of a controller. It has been found that under many circumstances the transportation lags can be so bad as to cause the controller to hunt seriously. Hunting can and in many cases does become so serious as to render automatic control impossible because of the surges it causes. While it is possible to compensate for this type of lag, this apparatus does not lend itself readily to accomplish the required compensation. Further, if there are groups of bins at various distances from the ball mill, compensation for one may not be sufficient or may be too great for another. Each milling plant presents a separate problem. The apparatus as presently described does not appear sufficiently flexible to accomplish this. C. M. Marquard—The problem of the automatic control of a grinding-classification circuit is not nearly as simple as has been indicated and it cannot be universally solved through the application of this device. The sound emanating from a ball mill such as the metallic clink of the balls against the liners can at times be misleading. The fact that the sound level due to the balls hitting the liners may be at a minimum does not necessarily mean that the mill is properly loaded. I have in mind an ore we treat that has a soft talcy gangue.
