SILICON and its metallurgical uses have been the subject of speculation since the earliest days of modern civilization. The early philosophers, Theophrastus and Pliny, believed that silica was a special form of ice, an opinion that was not seriously challenged until the seventeenth century. The first comprehensive view of the nature of silica was advanced by Lavoisier in 1787. He assumed silica to be an oxide of an unknown metal. In 1808 Berzelius produced ferrosilicon by heating silica, iron and charcoal. Probably the first produc¬tion of crystallized silicon was in 1854 when H. St. C. Deville accidentally produced the material while electrolyzing a double chloride of aluminum and sodium containing siliceous impurities. It is not strange that the early investigators should have given so much attention to silica and silicon, because of the great natural abundance of the former. Although silicon does not exist in the elemental state in nature, it has been estimated that the lithosphere contains approximately 60 per cent silica; quartz and rock crystal are found in practically every part of the world.

Chemical mining may be defined as the use of chemicals in extracting metal values from in situ broken or unbroken ores within a mine. The present means for the generation and regeneration of sulfuric acid or sulfuric-ferric sulfate solutions are inadequate for most applications. This report describes a pressure oxidation process for the generation and regeneration of these solutions from pyrites and spent iron sulfate leach liquors. While recent mining developments such as solution injection, caving, and conventional and nuclear blasting, have provided new and better means for the per-colation of leach solutions through rock masses, little has been done to reduce cost and improve the quality of the leach solutions that are required. A leach solution for chemical mining should meet certain requirements. It should be 1) inexpensive on either a small or large tonnage basis, 2) capable of selectively leaching the desired ore minerals contained in a particular ore, 3) of the proper strength or quality to do the job of leaching in an underground environment and 4) amendable to simple and inexpensive metal recovery steps. It is also important that the capital investment be low for the solution generation and; or regeneration plant.

Development work in western Missouri was continuous during 1933, owing to the shallow depths at which production is obtained and the low operating costs. Unfortunately, no statistics covering the total production of oil and gas during the year are available. No new oil-producing pools were opened in 1933, but the Knoche area in 1.46 N., R.33 W., Cass County, was extended. There are probably less than 100 producing oil wells, all in Cass and Jackson counties, with a combined production of possibly around 150 bbl. daily. Several new gas areas were developed and there were several extensions of old areas, in 1933. Production was extended north by an entirely new pool—the Hammond pool, north of Plattsburg in Clinton Co. (sec. 18, T.55 N., R.31 W., and sec. 13, T.55 N., R.32 W.) where 13 wells were completed, the largest producing 2,332,000 cubic feet. In the Bartle and Marshall pool in secs. 3-4-9-10, T.47 N., R.33 W., Jackson County, four wells opened a new area. The largest well was 1,000,000 cubic feet. There were some small extensions near Independence, Jackson County. Two wells of about 300,000 cu. ft. were completed at a depth of 700 ft. in Kansas City and in a deeper sand than is usually productive. The Shaler area, in secs. 27-34, T.44 N., R.33 W. in Cass County, was extended with several wells, the largest of which was 300,000 cubic feet. The production in the pools mentioned is obtained chiefly from the Henrietta and Cherokee formations of the Pennsylvanian age.

THREE-QUARTERS of the amount needed to defray the cost of the Louvain memorial clock and carillon has been subscribed by one-thirtieth of the total number of mem- bers of the engineering societies that are indorsing this memorial to the engineers who gave their lives in the Great War. Gifts of materials and services have been made, but about $20,000 is still needed to meet the total expense involved. Small contributions from the twenty-nine-thir- tieths of the total membership who have not yet subscribed should promptly provide this sum. The accompanying illus-tration shows the 48 gold stars made by the American Brass Co. for the four faces of the clock, being boxed for shipment at the works of the Dwight & Lloyd Co. at Netcong, N. J. The actual material of the stars is, of course, an aluminum bronze, which retains its gold color without tarnishing.

Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. In 1975 unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a "talc" claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from nearby metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

MODERNIZATION of the entire electrical system and improvement of Rotation process efficiency is the twofold goal of the improvement program underway at the Arthur and Magna concentrators of the Utah Copper Div., Kennecott Copper Corp. Copper ore from the Bingham pit goes to these two concentrators where an interlocking program calls for complete electrical modernization and increased flotation process efficiency through additional capacity and flow scheme revisions. Flotation plants at the two mills are essentially duplicates, and while this article deals with the changes at the Arthur mill similiar improvements are being made at the Magna mill.

ALMADEN is Arabic for "the mine." The definite article is properly used, for no mercury mine in the world compares with it for richness and volume of ore, produced and potential. After more than twenty centuries of exploitation, intensive throughout the last lour, ore from Almaden is about five times as rich as that of its closest competitor. We drove to the mine one April afternoon, across Don Quixote's plains of the Mancha, up the bleak, arid valley of the Rio Valdeazogue where we passed tenth century Moorish workings and their ruined castles. At dusk, we came to the Hacienda de Castilseras, a large farm where Almaden miners work their land on off days. Then we drove through the whitewashed, well-ordered town to the Castillo de la Direccion where we were challenged at the iron gate by two picturesquely costumed Guardias Jurados.

Since discovery of silver-gold lode deposits in 1864, the Butte district has produced more than $2.25 billion worth of copper, zinc, manganese, silver, and gold, an unprecedented value in the mining world. Exhaustion of the gold placer deposits along Silver Bow Creek, southwest of Butte, forced the early-day placer miners to turn their attention to the bold out- crops of the many veins exposed on the hillsides above the placer diggings. These outcrops bore silver and gold, and enough so that many lode claims were located. Such famous silver mines as the Alice, Moulton, Magna Carta, Nettie, and Blue Bird were developed. These and many smaller operations contributed to making Montana the leading silver-producing state in the 1880's. As depth was gained in the silver mines in certain parts of the district, occurrence of zinc minerals became troublesome. Zinc was not recoverable at the time, and in the chloridizing, roasting, and amalgamation of the ores, silver and gold recovery was greatly reduced. A period of active silver mining continued until 1892, when a decline in the price of silver brought the silver mining period to a close. Elsewhere in the district it was discovered that while some of the veins contained silver ores in the oxidized portions, the predominant minerals that were deeper were copper-bearing. Marcus Daly exposed rich copper ore on the 300 level of the Anaconda mine in 1891, and mining in the district disclosed that copper was destined to be developed in abundance. Early copper ore shipments were made to Swansea, Wales.

Discussion of the paper of J. NORMAN BULKLEY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 355 to 373. GRAHAM BRIGHT, E.. Pittsburgh, Pa.-On p. 265 mention is made of a change from steam hoist to electric hoist. The arrangement mentioned, of using a geared motor, and having the gearing and counter-shaft in a separate, self-contained unit, and then connecting that to the hoist by means of a flexible coupling, is very good. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to change a geared hoist over to an electric hoist. 'In that case the motor could be either direct-connected to the countershaft or geared to the countershaft, making a double-reduction gearing. Trouble has been experienced with this method on account of the hoist not being designed for electric drive. It may be of a rather light construction which will not stand the forces obtained by steam operation, the maximum being determined by the steam pressure which can be obtained in the cylinder. With motors of hoisting types, torques, can be obtained, which are so far in excess of anything that the steam engine could give, that this sometimes results in disaster when a motor is applied to a hoist of that type. If the operator gets a little careless, he may overstrain the hoist, And cause damage, so that this question should be looked into when changing from a steam hoist to an electric hoist. The hoist should be rugged enough to stand the torques which may be attained by careless operation, in which case, instead of using a three-bearing motor, with a pinion between two of the bearings, it is much better to arrange for a two-bearing motor, arranging for a coupling through a flexible coupler. In another place trouble is mentioned as due to the vibration of a geared hoisting motor. That can be overcome by supplying a flexible coupling between the motor and the hoist proper. You will find, if a flexible coupling is furnished, that the motor troubles will largely disappear. K. A. PAULY (communication to the Secretary*), Schenectady, N. As a result of past developments, mainly at universities, the coal industry has had access for a decade or more to a number of computer programs for coal mine planning. Using some of these programs Bethlehem Steel's Research Department in 1969 launched jointly with Bethlehem Mines Corporation an extensive research and development program aimed at: (1) testing the capabilities of these programs through trial applications as the need and opportunity existed, (2) defining what additional capabilities were required to make mine planning computer systems fully useful in the hands of Bethlehem's mine-planning engineers in the field, and (3) developing and implementing in the field the mine-planning systems agreed on. This program is now nearing completion, and several of Bethlehem's operations routinely use the planning tools that were developed. The progress of this research program is discussed in terms of our initial trial applications of computer methods to mine planning and the incorporation of several innovative features into our new set of computer programs, in particular, the use of time sharing, data base management systems, and general-purpose simulation languages.

AT present the Federal Government represents the only organization applying geophysical methods of prospecting in Brazil. The geophysical work of the National Department of Mineral Production, which will be described in the following pages, must be considered as a program of experimental work designed to demonstrate the applicability of the more or less "standard" methods of geophysical prospecting to various problems of economic interest in Brazil by means of practical examples of results obtained in certain typical areas. Our work is somewhat similar to that of the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey of Australia, but our task has been greatly simplified by the ever increasing number of technical publications relative to the theory of instruments and methods.

J. B. Haffner, or "Barney" as he is known to his wide circle of friends, was born at Landskrona, Sweden, on Christmas Day, 1886. He attended grade and preparatory schools there and then went to the Royal Technical Institute at Stockholm from which he graduated as a mining engineer in 1910. During these school years he gained practical experience in his summer vacations by working in various mines in Sweden and other European countries. Upon graduation he set forth for the land of opportunity, the United States. Upon arrival in this country he found people everywhere talking about the fabulous gold fields in Alaska and thereupon set sail for Nome, to take part in placer gold mining operations. Returning to the States, Barney worked in Illinois coal mines for a time and then carried on some construction work in Oklahoma. In 1913 he accepted employment with the Ray Consolidated Copper Co. in Arizona and soon found himself in positions of responsibility in the operating and

W. M. Williams (McGill University)-The authors are to be congratulated on completing this detailed investigation of recrystallization behavior. The present writer has recently completed some research at the University of Toronto on the recrystallization and grain growth behavior of a number of "pure" irons, and he would like to take issue with the authors' contention that recrystallization cannot be followed by means of hardness measurements. Two series of specimens of Ferrovac E, a com- mercially available iron, were annealed to complete recrystallization at 525" and 620" C, measurements being made both of Rockwell hardness and of volume percent recrystallized as a function of annealing time. Good correlation was found between these two quantities and, following the earlier practice of Cook and Richards for copper, hardness measurements were used in an extensive investigation of recrystallization. No anomalous behavior was observed as a result of this practice. Specimens which showed complete softening always showed, (metallographically and by X-rays), completely re-crystallized structures. These observations do not, of course, detract in the least from the results of the work under discus-

PROBABLY nowhere in the United States or its possessions is mining development more active at present than in the Philippine Islands. Only a few years ago only one company was of any importance, the Benguet Consolidated. Now, five companies are paying dividends, five others have reached the producing stage, some seven others may produce this year, and a score or so are being actively developed. Gold production in 1933 was valued at about $8,000,000, last year at about $11,000,000, and this year an output valued at about $17,000,000 is envisaged. At the beginning of 1934 about 1750 tons of ore was being milled daily; at the end of the year, the tonnage was approximately 3400. In 1933 there were only thirteen Institute members in the Philippines; a year ago there were 27, and now there are 46. About fifteen thousand amen were employed in the mining industry last year, with mine payrolls amounting to $3,500,000. An immense amount of new machinery has been required. One difficulty has so far hindered gold-mine development to some extent-lack of adequate power. Each company therefore finds it necessary to generate its own power, and for this purpose diesel engines are generally adopted.

SOME readjustments in the research programs of most of the oil companics and petroleum engineering schools have been made necessary by the war. The most obvious change has been the conversion from production engineering to problems more closely related to the nation's was effort. Many laboratories now devote much of their time to studies on products to be derived from petroleum. such as synthetic rubber, toluene, and substitutes for critical materials. Others are working to improve motor fuels including high-octane gasoline and the special lubricants required by the wide geographical range of the present conflict. Of great importance is the experience of the geophysicists, who are now devoting a great percentage of their time on instrument research and production or special apparatus required by the armed forces.

A method is presented for predicting the character of gas or water displacement in a radial system, which can be either horizontal or inclined. The latter case would comprise cone-shaped or dome-shaped symmetry. The method conriders the one dimension of radial distance, taken parallel to the bedding planes. Approximate allowance can be made for segregation of the two fluids perpendicular to the bedding planes. A complete saturation history can be obtained in about a day's time with the use of a desk calculator. Results of an example calculation agree well with the performance of simulated gas drive in a large model representing a section of a cone. This pie-shaped, sand-packed model was 8-ft long and 4-in. thick. The method of solution is useful in handling other partial differential equations of first order and first degree. INTRODUCTION A new analytical method has been developed for predicting the performance of gas or water drive in a reservoir having radial or cone-shaped symmetry (see Fig. 1). In addition, this new development offers a general method of handling partial differential equations of first order and first degree. This work extends those methods developed previously'- "or predicting the displacement of oil by gas or water in linear systems. The method of calculating oil recovery in a radial system involves two major parts. The first part is a calculation of the distribution of saturations at various times of depletion. The second part is the calculation of oil recovery and producing gas-oil or water-oil ratios through volumetric balance on the saturation distributions obtained in the first part. This second part differs only slightly in principle from similar calculations made with linear systems, for instance. The basic assumptions used in the calculations are as follows. 1. One-dimensional radial flow. An approach is explained later for approximating a second vertical dimension. (With- drawals of oil, and of the driving fluid after breakthrough, are assumed uniform around the periphery of the dome.) 2. Constant-volume fluid flow. Thus, in a gas drive there is no change in gas solubility, or in oil or gas volume due to viscous and gravity pressure drops. 3. Capillary forces are negligible. 4. Constant rate of injection. A program has been written for carrying out the calculations needed on a digital computer. However, a prediction can also be arrived at using a desk calculator; this latter method of work requires about a day's time for each prediction made. CALCULATION OF SATURATION DISTRIBUTION For definiteness, we describe the development of our method for the case of gas drive from the crest of the structure. To know the rate of decline of oil wells is very important, yet ordinarily we are prevented from getting this rate because the oil from several wells is put into one or a few tanks as soon as the wells have been connected to the power. The object of doing this is economy of tanks, pipes, labor and accounting. FIG. 1. But we are making a great sacrifice for this small economy. The advantages of the individual records are that we would know better: 1. When the well has ceased to be profitable. 2. When a well has gotten into bad condition. 3. The real record of the yield per acre and the rate of decline of the wells. The lease total is too mixed as to age of the wells for existing records to have much significance. To obtain such individual well records and more accurate logs are the great desiderata of satisfactory management of oil properties. 4. Which wells show the slowest decline-information which is valuable in locating new wells or purchasing adjoining leases.

Germanium has been rolled in the temperature range of 700o to 800°C. The thickness has been decreased by as much as a factor of four, from a thickness of 0.032 in. to a thickness of 0.008 in. For deformations below 60 pet, the true strain per pass is found to be a constant; from the temperature dependence of this slope, an activation energy of about 2.5 ev is obtained. This energy agrees with that for dislocation climb in germanium . For reductions greater than 60 pet, complete rings are seen in the Lave photographs, new grains are observed in the microstructure, considerable softening occurs, and the hole mobility is very low. This evidence indicates that the recrystallization of gertnanium has occurred. GERMANIUM has been deformed in many ways1 including tension, compression, torsion, and bending since Gallagher2 first described its plastic nature at elevated temperatures. All of these studies indicate that the glide plane in germanium is (111) and that the glide direction is (110). Rolled germanium specimens were used by Kolm, Warekois, and Kulin3 in their X-ray study of deformed semiconductors, but no information is given on the rolling itself. The present experiments deal with the rolling of germanium at various temperatures and for different orientations. In all previous deformation studies, the phenomenon of recrystallization (i.e., the transformation of a single crystal into a polycrystal) in germanium has not been observed4 despite relatively large deformations at elevated temperatures. The proposed reason4 for this was that sufficient energy could not be stored in the deformed germanium lattice. In contrast to the earlier studies this work will present evidence indicating that recrystallization occurs in germanium during rolling at an elevated temperature. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Test Specimens. The samples used for rolling were in the form of rectangular parallelepipeds measuring 0.3 in. long, 0.06 in. wide, and 0.035 in. high. They were cut from an undoped single-crystal ingot of p-type germanium with a resistivity of 24.4 ohm-cm, a Hall mobility of 2300 sq cm v-' sec-l, and a hole concentration of 1.1 x 1014 cm"3 at room temperature. The surfaces of the specimens were metallographically polished prior to rolling. The initial dislocation density of the samples was about 10' cm-' as determined by etching in CP4. Two different specimen orientations were used. In the first case, the direction of rolling was parallel to (251), the surfaces in contact with the rolls were of the form (1021, and the normal to the third face was parallel to (211). The Carol concentrator of the Iron Ore Company of Canada was completed in 1962 and through expansions .has become one of the largest iron ore beneficiation plants in the world with a new feed capacity of 147,000 It (149,350 mt) per day. The Carol ore contains specular hematite and magnetite having a bulk density of 166 lb/cu ft (2660 kg/m3) It is crushed to 7 in. (178 mm) for feeding to autogenous mills for subsequent concentration by Humphrey’s s spirals. Mine ore is loaded into 150 It (152 mt) trucks by 10 cu yd (7.65 m3) shovels and then, at a transfer station, is loaded into side-dump rail cars of 100 It (101.6 mt) capacity. Each train is composed of twenty cars and operates completely automatically as it hauls the ore to the primary crushing station, dumps its loads, and returns to the loading station, a 11.5 mile (18.5 km) round trip. The primary crushing station is composed of two 60 in. by 89 in. gyratories installed in 1962 and 1972. Neither crusher has a grizzly ahead of it. Rail cars are dumped into 300 It (305 mt) pockets which contain splitters for spider protection. What few oversize boulders which do not go through the crushers are drilled and blasted. Liners in the dump pocket and the crushed ore pokcet under the crusher are manganese steel. Both crushers are direct driven by 700 hp (5 15 kw) motors, and the hardness of the ore causes them to pull almost their full power. Crushed ore drops into a 160 It (163 mt) pocket equipped with radioactive level control units for low-intermediate, and high level indications. The low level unit stops and starts the apron feeder, the intermediate unit controls the feeder speed, and a high-level reading stops the car dumping. Apron feeders are 72 in. (1. 82 m) wide and are variable speed from 12 to 52 fpm (3. 7 to 15. 8 mpm). They discharge to 60 in. (1.52 m) wide takeaway belts. Crushing capacity, nominal and maximum for each crusher, is 4, 000 ltph (4. 064 mtph) and 4,600 ltph (4,674 mtph). The crusher eccentric is removed by a conventional cart which travels on removable rails. Mainshaft removal and maintenance is done by 65 and 75/10 ton cranes. Mainshaft replacement requires eight hours, a usual time, but concave replacement requires only sixteen hours, a result of a fine maintenance organization. Mantle relining is done at grade next to a repair track. Zinc is used for backing both mantles and concaves. Both the electrical rooms and the dust collectors are located below grade,

THE so-called Kick law' is generally accepted to . mean that for each reduction to one-half in particle diameter, in a unit weight, the same amount of work is required. In crushing-efficiency calculations on crushing tests it is customary, when basing the calculation on Kick's law, to assign ordinal numbers to each standard sieve size. These ordinal numbers increase by a constant difference with each successive sieve aperture, because standard sieve apertures are in constant ratio. Minus 200-mesh is generally assumed as equivalent to 37 microns in size. By definition, the ordinal number multiplied by the per cent material of any size is equal to the energy units in the material of that size in a unit weight of sample. The sum of all energy units is the energy units content of a unit weight of sample, whether it be crusher feed or product. The difference between the energy units in the product and that in the feed is the tangible result of the work input per unit weight of feed. From this the amount of work necessary for one energy unit may be calculated. This has been done for a quartz crushing-test made at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, in which the net work going to crushing was carefully measured. The results of this crushing test are given in Table 1.'
