SOMEWHAT over ten years ago the author described studies1,2 on the constitution of the copper-silicon system. The copper-rich portion of this diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The experimental points freely dotted about the diagram seemed to justify an otherwise unconvincing diagram and for several years the curious reverse bend in the alpha-phase bound-ary was accepted as substantially correct, even by later investigators3,4 of the system who introduced changes in the high-silicon phases. The binary diagram has been used as a base for several ternary systems" without any suggested changes. Voce10 suspected the existence of another phase from his study of the cast alloys in the copper-manganese¬silicon system, but evidently hesitated to extrapolate this to the binary diagram, particularly in view of the too ingenious explanation that was advanced" to account for the pools of constituent clearly visible in castings; namely, that they were secondary alpha of twinned orientation deposited from beta. Von Schwarz,12 in 1932, called attention to the fact that this micro-constituent in copper-silicon alloy castings was anisotropic under polar-ized light and asserted that a new phase, not cubic, should be placed in the diagram adjacent to alpha. Sautner,13 on the basis of investigations with the polarizing microscope and with X-rays, introduced this phase into the diagram at about 6 per cent Si. The relevant part of his dia-gram is shown in Fig. 2. Sautner called the new phase beta, renaming the old beta phase zeta. To avoid confusion, in redrawing Fig. 2 the phases have been renamed in accordance with the terminology adopted in the present paper, in which the new phase is called kappa and the other phases retain the designation given them by Arrhenius and Westgren.4

THE melting point of molybdenum is 2625° ± 50°C. Heretofore the metal has been considered too refractory to be melted in commercial quantities; hence, it has been formed into rod, wire, and sheet by the methods of powder metallurgy, wherein the temperatures do not exceed 90 per cent of the melting temperature. The manipulation of liquid metals at temperatures of about 2000°C. and above presents some difficult problems in heat transfer, in purification, and in container materials. For metals melting at such high temperatures, it is generally regarded as expedient to circumvent the more common melting and casting process by resorting to powder metallurgy. This circumvention is not accomplished without some penalties, the more notable of which are the relatively high cost of the powder metallurgy method and particularly the size limitations of its product. In an effort to overcome the inherent disadvantages of the powder metallurgy method, especially in respect to the limit of size, a project was begun in 1943 at the Climax Molybdenum Co. laboratory to develop a method of melting and casting molybdenum capable of producing larger bodies of molybdenum than were then obtainable. Later, from Feb. 1, 1944, to Aug. 31, 1945, the project was under the supervision of the National Defense Research Committee, Division One. In peacetime, too, there are needs for molybdenum, which make consideration of another process desirable; for example, large parts for heat engines generally, the omnipresent demand for metal of higher quality and lower cost, and the development of molybdenum-base alloys. This paper describes methods for melting and casting molybdenum, with details of the special process needed to make molybdenum castings ductile, and reports some of the properties of what may be regarded as a new, or at least modified, form of the metal. FIRST PROCESS FOR MELTING AND CASTING MOLYBDENUM The maintenance of a temperature greater than 2625°C. in a space large enough to melt several pounds of molybdenum may involve the loss of heat at a very considerable rate. For melting molybdenum, therefore, the source of heat must be of high potential and of fairly high power. Evidently, also, the source of heat must not impair the purity of the product. The electric arc operating in vacuum appeared to meet these requirements and was accordingly the first choice as a source of energy. A number of arc devices for melting molybdenum were examined, and several were tried. In the first experiment, a 20-kw., 60-cycle-per-second alternating-current arc was operated between two horizontal and opposed electrodes of molybdenum. In this arrangement the falling droplets of molybdenum solidified below the arc in an irregular mass. This experiment did not produce a useful casting, but the data obtained indicated that

A group of 13 cities situated in Los Angeles and Orange counties in Southern California is engaged in constructing an aqueduct to carry water from the Colorado River at a point near Parker, Arizona, to a distribution point near Riverside, California. The aqueduct will have a total length of approximately 241 miles, and is designed to deliver 1605 cu. ft. of water per second, or a little more than one billion gallons per day. The aqueduct crosses a barren, desert waste and the project includes approximately 91 miles of 16-ft. tunnel. The large amount of tunnel driving that has been done in this country in the past few years has resulted in some remarkable developments in equipment and methods. The building of the Colorado River Aqueduct,, with its 91 miles of tunnels, has called on the best engineering knowledge in the country. New and better equipment has been designed for all phases of the work, and this equipment has been coordinated and adapted to the various conditions with a high degree of efficiency. The result has been that records for tunnel driving have been set under adverse natural conditions that exceed the estimates for progress under good conditions. All of the tunnels in the main aqueduct, except the Valverde and Bernasconi at the western end, have a finished diameter, inside the concrete lining, of 16 ft. Fig. 4 shows a section of the tunnel with the concrete lining in place. Fig. 5 illustrates the finished tunnel in three typical sections. The standard tunnel grade is 3.432 ft. per mile in the 16-ft. tunnels, but the Valverde and Bernasconi tunnels have a steeper grade and a finished diameter of 15 ft. 3 in. The rough bore of the large main aqueduct tunnels averages 12.95 solid cubic yards of material per foot of advance in timbered sections and 10.76 solid cubic yards per foot in unsupported sections. I. INTRODUCTION. THE application of the camera as an adjunct to topographic mapping began practically with its invention, and it has been employed with varying success since that time. With the exception of the camera to be described, the plate-camera has been universally used in this work, thus giving a projection of the area photographed on a flat surface. From such projections or photographs, by the rules of geometry and of perspective, points defining topographic features and seen from at least two camera-stations may be projected upon a ground-plane-the map.1 In 1904 I employed the plate-camera for this purpose in Alaska, but found that the labor necessary to plot the maps, even in a general way, was long and tedious. In 1905 a small Eastman panoramic camera was fitted with spirit-levels, a sightalidade and a transparent scale, introduced inside the camera to register the degree-points in the sky-line of the film-negative; also, arrows to indicate the horizon-line. This was, on the whole, successful; but the details in the topography were not brought out in the views with sufficient clearness, and the photographs were too small. These difficulties were overcome by obtaining a larger and more carefully constructed instrument, which was satisfactorily employed in the field during the year 1906. This chapter is written primarily from the standpoint of development of flotation processes for treatment of specific ores. However, most of the principles and techniques discussed are equally applicable to other forms of applied flotation research such as improvement of procedures in existing plants and development of new reagents or methods without reference to specific ores. Because it is not possible to cover this subject in detail here, much of the material presented is in the form of a guide to the literature, with emphasis on readily available, English language publications. Details are included only if considered to be widely applicable or not readily accessible in the literature. Related subjects which are covered elsewhere in this volume, such as flowsheet design and statistical techniques, are not emphasized in this chapter. The material presented is intended primarily for those familiar with the theory and practice of flotation, but with limited experience in applied flotation research. It may be of value to the experienced investigator as well, by calling to his attention some useful viewpoints or techniques that he may have overlooked. It has often been said that flotation is more of an art than a science. In- deed much of the knowledge of flotation behavior is empirical. However, the unsystematic, artisan approach to flotation problems results only in an ac- cumulation of unrelated data. Like any other physical or chemical process, flotation is amenable to investigation by systematic experimental methods. The experiments should be based, as far as possible, on an understanding of the natural laws that govern the process and on good experimental procedures. SAMPLING OF A DEPOSIT In working out a flotation process for a mineral deposit, no step is more important than that of obtaining a suitable sample or samples. Experimental procedures cannot compensate for the lack of a representative sample. Methods of sampling a deposit have been published elsewhere,l-4 but a few points are of special importance from the standpoint of flotation. First, the sample should be representative of the deposit, not only in respect to chemical composition, but also in respect to mineralogical composition and degree of dissemination of the valuable minerals. Certain types of macromolecules added to water and salt solutions flowing in turbulent motion can reduce the pressure gradient. Alternatively, the volumetric capacity of a pipe for these fluids is increased by the presence of these materials. Examples presented show that the drag reduction can become significant. Thus, the presence of 0.28 per cent of a gum derivative in a solution of sodium chloride flowing at 200 gal/min in a 1.89-in. pipe yields a pressure drop which is 0.44 of the single-phase drop measured under the same conditions of turbulent flow; the addition of 0.1 per cent of a vinyl derivative to a I-in. water line yields a throughput capacity which is 1.78 of the single-phase capacity at the same pressure drop. It is further shown that these phenomena are distinctly different from previous observations with other classes of non-Newtonian systems. There a simple lowering of friction factors below the levels predicted from the resistance laws for Newtonian fluids is associated with a suppression of turbulent motion. A rational physical explanation for drag reduction is advanced. Briefly, the proposed mechanism is a storage by the molecular elastic elements of the macromolecules in solution of the kinetic energy of the turbulent motion. INTRODUCTION This study was inspired by a recent review of some paradoxical drag reduction phenomena in turbulent pipe f1ow.I Under very moderate conditions of turbulent flow, the pressure gradient necessary to pump solutions containing certain specific kinds of polymers, fibers and metallic soaps may become appreciably lower than that required* to pump the solvent, i.e., water or a low-viscosity hydrocarbon, under identical flow rates in the same conduit. As shown by our review, this phenomenon of drag reduction in turbulent duct flow was first noted during the second world war, apparently arising in connection with the development of flame warfare weapons. Since that time several papers illustrating this phenomenon have appeared: Toms, Oldroyd,3 Agoston et al., Bundrant and Matthews, Robertson and Mason,6 Ousterhout and Hall,7 Daily and Bugliarello~ Lummus, Anderson, and Fox. 9 That there are practical applications for techniques which increase discharge or decrease the pressure necessary to transport a liquid through a pipeline is illustrated in the patents which have issued which take advantage of this peculiar phenomenon, e.g., Mysels,l0 Dever, Harbour, and Seifert.11 One also finds fragmentary evidence of this effect in the data pertaining to a few of the polymeric solutions studied by Shaver12 and Dodge.13 However, these investigators were concerned with the development of friction factor vs Reynolds number correlations for a variety of non-Newtonian solutions and suspensions, rather than in a study of drag reduction-. A similar kind of drag reduction effect has been observed in gases. Sproull, for example, reports that adding dust to air flowing in turbulent motion through a pipe results in a lowering of the pressure gradient at identical flow rates. There are also military applications for reducing the drag on hydrodynamic vehicles. For example, the possibility of injecting a rheologically complex fluid into the boundary layers of bodies to reduce the skin friction has been investigated by Fabulal5 and Granville.16 Along somewhat different lines are the drag reduction studies of Kramer.17118 He has shown that skin friction can be reduced by covering the surface of a vehicle with a flexible skin. The effect is apparently due to the boundary layer being stabilized by the presence of the skin. Drag reduction by means of coexisting gas and liquid boundary layers, e.g., film boiling and continuous gas injection, has been proposed by Bradfield, Barkdoll, and Byrne,19 Cess and Sparrow,20'21 Sparrow, Jonsson, and Eckert.22 Here the skin friction occurs between a vapor and a surface rather than between a liquid and a surface. There are several references in the literature to friction-factor correlations for non-Newtonian solutions and suspensions: Shaver and Merri11,23 Dodge and Metzner, Clapp,25 and Thomas.26

When a mixture of chalcopyrite concentrate and lime is heated in air, the following reaction takes place: 2CuFeS2 + 4Ca (OH)2 + 8 ½ 02 ; 2Cu0 + Fe203 + 4CaS04 + 4H20. Ca (OH)2 is the only common reagent that will adequately control SO2 evolution in roasting. Other additives tried, including CaO, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaOH, MgO, Mg (OH)2, and MgCO3, were not effective. All reacted with sulfur, but not to the extent that will be required to meet the new control regulations for sulfur oxide emissions. For example: when the concentrate was heated with the theoretical amount of limestone (CaCO3), about 55% of the sulfur was retained in the calcine; whereas use of the stoichiometric amount of Ca (OH), converted approximately 99% of the sulfur to CaSO1. In most of the experiments, Ca(OH)2 was formed by adding CaO to concentrates containing enough water to simulate filter cake from flotation circuit. This eliminated the need for drying the concentrate and utilized the heat of hydration of CaO.

GLASS squares compressed on edge by steel jaws in poor contact with them developed jagged "partial-contact" cracks caused by the formation of local tensile stresses. Compressed by steel jaws in perfect contact, they developed smooth "release cracks" during release of the pressure, caused by the formation of local tensile stresses during the release of the pressure. All these cracks were parallel to the pressure. A Microflash photograph of a disintegrating specimen under sufficient pressure reveals a network of fractures roughly normal to each other, also "release cracks" and a disintegration cloud. The Griffith theory is amended to account for the formation of a first crack. A new theory, based on the theory of thermal agitation and wave propagation, is proposed to account for the progress, velocity and forking of cracks. The network of fractures is shown to have been caused by reflection at a free boundary of pressure pulses emanating from a first crack. Postulating equal distribution of energy in the pulses emitted on either side by a crack in particles, the smaller fragments are shown to continue fracturing preferentially while some of the coarser fragments remain as residual pieces. As comminution of the smaller fragments proceeds, the solid is reduced to a collection of residual particles of smaller and smaller sizes, accounting for the disintegration cloud. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus A crushing device was built, consisting of a steel frame and two polished, hardened steel jaws to crush plate-glass samples. This device was placed between the plates of a hydraulic press (Fig. I). For centering the pressure, the upper jaw was guided vertically and provided with a rounded top. Later it was replaced by a steel jaw ground out of a 2 1/2-in. steel ball, the lower surface being ground to an optical flat (Fig. 2). Four rollers were used to eliminate side thrust. Screws and centering blocks served to center the specimen in the crushing device. Hard steel shims placed under the shoulder of the upper jaw limited the "follow through" of the jaw after failure of the specimen. Stress distribution was first examined with a polariscope mounted on an optical bench, using monochromatic light. It was found convenient to mount polaroid, quarter wave and monochromatic plates directly on the device itself. A Microflash unit* was used as light source for the photographs. The application of oil to coal for-the reduction of dust has greatly increased the consumers' satisfaction with solid fuels, especially those for domestic use. The combination of oil-treated coal and automatic firing by a small stoker has made possible clean, automatic heating with bituminous coal. This, with the added pressure of competition by other fuels, has caused a rapid development of oil treating practice. A variety of materials derived" from petroleum oils is available from which one may choose for treating a par-ticular coal. Until recently, however, little information had been published to guide the choice. It is most im-portant that the proper type and amount of oil be used in order that all coals marketed as "dustless" will be reason-ably dustless, and thereby maintain a good reputation for oil-treatment. During the past two and one-half years, an investigation of a number of the problems related to the treatment of coal with oil has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. This project was jointly sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research. Inc., Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Sun Oil Company, and Viking Manufacturing Company. A progress report giving the principal results of the work of the first year was presented before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 1937.1 The present paper is a summary of the entire inves-tigation.

The development of computer programs to solve complex ventilation networks has reached a point of refinement where these programs become a necessary tool of the ventilating engineer. Such a program is presented. This program has an increased efficiency over its predecessors; it also includes the important facility of fixed quantity branches. This is in addition to the earlier capabilities of free-splitting, internal or external fans, and natural ventilation pressures. The program is written in Fortran IV with double-precision arithmetic and is listed here. Sample problems with input and output are also given. The recent, and presumably continuing, official interest in mine safety is bound to result in more stringent control requirements for ventilation. Anticipating this requirement, the Dept. of Mining, The Pennsylvania State University, has developed a computer program for the solution of complex mine ventilation networks. It is the opinion of this department that the program has sufficient merit to warrant its use in normal industrial operating conditions. Although the undergraduate mining engineering students of this department are routinely trained to use the program, it was felt that this training did not present a fast enough means of dissemination; consequently, this paper was written. The conception of the program is not new;1; however, the present version incorporates features that changes it from a scientific endeavor to a useful operating tool. These features include those of earlier programs, such as free-splitting, external or internal fans, and natural ventilation processes plus the important ability of handling fixed quantity branches, and of increased efficiency giving reduced cost. The facility for fixed quantities will be discussed in more detail. The solution of any network depends upon satisfying Kirchchoff's laws. These state that the sum of flow at any junction is zero, and that the sum of the pressure drop in branches totals the pressure drop in the mesh constituted by those branches, that is that the pressure drop around any mesh is zero. The terminology is derived from Synge," and is, in fact, that used by Topologists. A branch is any airway of uniform characteristics; a junction is where two or more airways meet (the minimum number of two airways is useful for describing the point where a low resistance airway changes into a high resistance one due to some physical constriction); a mesh is a path, along some branches, that returns on to itself, but does not need to traverse the same branch twice in order to do so; and a tree describes all those branches in a network which, while connected through all the junctions, do not form any meshes. Obviously the branches-in-tree are open-ended and can be shown to be one less than the number of junction (J-1). The branches-out-of-tree, also called basic branches, are equal to the number of basic meshes and are M = N — J + 1, where M is the number of meshes and N is the number of branches. The major difference between this network and an electrical one is that the law attributed to Atkinson for pressure drop is utilized rather than Ohm's law. Atkinson stated that the pressure drop (potential) is equal to a resistance factor multiplied by the quantity squared. This is written H = RlQlQ where H is the head loss. Q? is written in this factored fashion so that H will always have the same sign as Q. A negative sign is used to indicate that flow in a branch is opposite to that of its containing mesh. A mesh takes the direction of its basic branch. Utilizing Atkinson's law in Kirchchoff's second law and bearing in mind that the first law must remain satisfied, the program will determine all quantities, or head losses as they are related, for the branches of the network. The program uses a Geuss-Seidel form of in-teration, starting from an arbitrary Q and using a correction factor of the type first suggested by Professor Hardy Cross' that will handle the nonlinear equation of Atkinson's law. A fuller description of the interative process is included in Wang and Hartman.' Iteration continues until the correction factor is less than or equal to a preset error (E) or until a maximum number of iterations (MAXIT) have been reached. Utilizing an E of 50 cfm, sample problems have had rapid solutions. Rapidity of solution is also ensured by the method of selecting meshes and basic branches. This is done by the computer, which chooses the highest resistance branches, fixed quantity branches, and those containing fans, as basic branches. Natural ventilation pressures are handled as fans of constant pressure and may be assigned to any branch. The computer will generate a fan characteristic by polynominal fitting if a few operating points from the desired fan are input. A fan may be placed in any branch of the network, except those with fixed quantities. The strength of the present program over its earlier versions is its ability to handle fixed quantity branches. This means that certain branches can have their quantity determined, or preset, by the ventilating engineer. Operating under this constraint, the program will analyze the network and output the pressure change necessary to achieve this desired quantity. A call for positive head loss would require an auxiliary fan; negative head loss would require a regulator. This represents a powerful tool for the ventilating engineer who must insure that certain quantities of air pass across the operating faces or through working stopes. McPherson6 suggested that a ventilation program would be useful for determining in advance which branches were receiving inadequate air, and that subsequent calculations would then indicate the necessary corrections. The present program makes these corrections. Thus the mine manager can know immediately the consequences of changes to his system;

The object of this paper as to show that the structural composition of an alloy may be found by the planimetric measurement of the total area occupied by each of the constituents on a few representative photomicrographs of this alloy. When the area is determined the volume and the proportional weight of the constituent may be calculated. This method has been used for the determination of the structural composition of binary eutectics and other binary alloys with known constituents; also the composition of unknown constituents in binary alloys. The accuracy of the method is. high enough to justify its application to metallographic problems instead of the chemical analysis. THIS work has for its purpose the establishment of a new method for determining the structural composition of alloys. The area occupied by a constituent on a few representative photomicrographs of the alloy is measured, by a planimeter, especially designed for metallographic work, and the volume and proportional weight of the constituent calculated. Experiments have shown that 'the results are accurate enough to justify the application of the method to many problems in metallographic research instead of chemical analysis. The advantage of the method is the possibility, of determining the amount of the constituents with-out separating them from the alloy; their composition may also be determined if the ultimate chemical analysis of the alloy is known. The structure of the Caucasus as made out by the Russian geologists and represented in Pamphlet XXII. of the Livret Guide, by Loewinson-Lessing, is an overturned anticlillal from Lars to Passanour; a distorted synclinal with monoclinal dip from Passanour to near the summit of the anti-Caucasus chain south of Tiflis; and another overturned auticlinal from this point to Erivan on the Armenian border. Ng—Neogene; Pg— Paleogene ; J,—Upper Junssic (and Cretaceolls in other parts of the chain) ; J1—Lias ; Pz—Paleozoic schists plicated ; yd—massives of granite and diabase; —porphyries ; —trachytes, andesites; Pz, Mz, plicated sedimentary deposits of Armenia. The details of the geology, however, are extremely complicated—so much so, indeed, as to make it impossible for any set of men to have worked them out in a single season. The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Mine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

p-n junctions to detect and measure the energy of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation are described. Useful energy range is from 1 kev to several Meu. Achieved energy resolution varies from 30 pct at 6 keu to 0.12 pct at 2 Mev. Parameters affecting the perfornzance of the present detectors and desired of a new material are discussed. DURING the last 6 years semiconductor detectors have been used extensively to detect and to measure the energy of charged particles. These detectors are made from reverse-biased p-n junctions. Electron-hole pairs are created in the depletion region of the junction, Fig. 1. The carriers are separated by the electric field and give rise to a pulse of current in the external circuit. This current pulse is proportional to the number of carriers and hence to the energy deposited in the depletion region by the ionizing event. More recently the discovery of the lithium drift process, first in silicon' and then in germanium,2 has extended the use of semiconductor detectors to the detection and the energy measurement of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation. These detectors now have a useful measurement range extending from the soft X-ray region, about 6 kev, to the hard y ray region of several Mev. Surface-contoured avalanche diodes can be used to extend this range down to 1 kev. There is however a desire for other materials suited to higher operating temperatures, and particularly for those materials with high y ray stopping power. The most important advantage of the semiconductor detector over gaseous and scintillation detectors is the average energy, E, required to form an electron-hole pair. Fig. 2 shows the quantum efficiency for germanium as a function of photon energy.3 At the band-gap energy, 0.7 ev, an electron-hole pair is generated by the absorption of the photon and the quantum efficiency is unity. The quantum efficiency remains constant at unity between 0.7 and 3 ev. It then increases as additional electron-hole pairs are formed by secondary ionization of the initial photoelectron. The state of California produced 310,-996,696 bbl. of oil and about 415,832,000 M cu. ft. of gas in 1944. IN selecting the subject, "Acceleration of the Rate of Corrosion by High Constant Stresses," for the 1940 Institute of Metals Division Lec-ture, I have been influenced by its highly theoretical and speculative nature as well as by the great practical importance of the correct inter-pretation and appraisal of the engineering significance of the phenomenon. I lay no claim to originality in talking on this topic, since it has been the subject of discussion for over a quarter of a century. However, as our technical thinking advances, old phenomena take on new and more significant aspects. In our studies at the Aluminum Research Labora-tories, we have encountered many perplexing and seemingly contradictory results and have been fascinated by the problem of dovetailing all of the many pieces of information to make a complete picture. I hope that in the brief period of this lecture I may share with you some of the enjoy-ment we have had in attempting to meet this challenge to metallur-gical science. The emphasis generally has been placed on the spontaneous failure by cracking of a metal under the combined action of high stress and corrosion, hence the present-day use of the terms "stress corrosion" or "stress corrosion cracking." The older term "season cracking," applied more specifically to copper-base alloys, includes, by inference, the element of time. For the purpose of the discussion today I will use "stress corro-sion" to cover broadly the effect of stress in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metals. To stay within the limits of allotted time the dis-cussion will cover the effect of high static stresses rather than repeated or dynamic stresses, which would take us into the related field of corro-sion-fatigue. The subject is particularly appropriate for an Institute of Metals Division Lecture because much the same phenomenon has been observed in almost all metal systems. At the present time, oxidized taconite and semitaconite are not processed on the Mesabi Range except in vely limited tonnages. However, it is estimated that by 1990 shipments from the Range will approach 75 million tons of iron ore per year. To achieve this and future production, either additional magnetic taconite reserves must be proven or oxidized taconite and semitaconite must be processed. One beneficiation process which uses high-intensity magnetic separation and flotation for concentrating oxidized taconite and semitaconite is described. Detailed metallurgical results are given and an economic evaluation of the process is presented with comparison to other processes. The results of the present study indicate that the high-intensity magnetic separation and flotation process appears nearer commercialization for the processing of Mesabi Range semitaconite. The disadvantages of the process are nearer solution and are being solved by well-defined programs. During the twentieth century, the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota has been the main source of iron ore for American steel mills. The Mesabi Range, which is about 120 miles long and up to 3 miles wide, is the pre-glacial outcrop of a group of sedimentary iron-bearing rocks known as the Biwabik formation. The formation, which is 200 to 650 ft thick and dips 50 to 10° to the southeast, is divided into four stratigraphic units. From top to bottom, these are the Upper Slaty, Upper Cherty, Lower Slaty, and Lower Cherty. Since its deposition in Precambrian time, most of the original Biwabik formation has been subject to alteration. Thus, although the iron content of the original formation was quite uniform, major variations in mineral composition now occur both laterally along the length of the formation and vertically within its units. Details of the mineralogical variations in the Biwabik formation have been described by Wolff,' Gruner, 2 and White.3 The unaltered portion of the Biwabik formation includes the magnetite taconites which are being commercially processed by Reserve Mining, Erie Mining, Eveleth Taconite, National Steel, Butler Taconite, and U.S. Steel. These six operations have a capacity of 32 million tons of iron ore pellets per year and have produced approximately 170milion tons of pellets since 1956. Capacity for another 30 million tons of pellets per year is being considered by the industry for the next ten years. This increase will be obtained by constructing new plants and by expanding present operations. Thus, by ! 978, it is estimated that approximately 60 million tons of iron ore vellets will be produced each vear from the magnetite taconites of the Biwabik formation. The portions of the Biwabik formation subjected to intense alteration resulted in direct shipping, wash, and heavy-media ores. Since 1892, 1.8 billion tons of direct shipping ore have been shipped from the Mesabi Range. This ore has been the major source of iron ore for American steel mills. In 1967, about 11 million tons of direct shipping ore and 13 million tons of wash, jig, heavy-media, and other gravity concentrates were shipped from the Mesabi Range.4 These products generally have poorer physical and chemical properties than the iron pellets produced from magnetic taconite.
