ChillaQoe is situated in latitude 17" S., about 138 miles from the port of Cairns, with which it is now connected by rail. A township has been established on the banks of Chillagoe creek, a perennial stream of irregular volume crossing the field almost at rightrangles, nearly midway between the mining-camps of Calcifer and Mungana, which have been formed at the southeastern and western extremes of the field respectively. This situation was selected because of the water-supply and its proximity to the site most suitable for the erection of reductionworks. By its central position it commands the whole of the mines. The altitude above sea-level is about 1200 ft., whereas that of Calcifer and Mungana is 1400 ft.—a difference sufficient to account for a materially higher temperature at Chillagoe. The surrounding limestone bluffis add by radiation to the heat, and, at the same time, prevent the cool breezes from passing freely through the town; consequently, the temper* ture, which is high throughout the year, and especially so during the summer months, is here ge~ierally very oppressive also. The general trend of the field is southeast and northwest, and its length about 18 miles, with an average width of 5 miles; the approximate area is thus 90 sq. miles. The surrounding mineral-district is, however, much more extensive, and numerous other mines, sprcad over wide areas and producing a variety of minerals, exist in the same or parallel belts of mineralized country, of which Chillagoe proper covers but a very small portion. Immense bluffs of limestone, wollastonite and conglomerate, rising in places to nearly 300 ft., and so~netimes nearly a quarter-mile across, give the field a very picturesque and interesting appearance. THE copper concentrator of the Braden Copper Co. is at Sewell, Chile, on the western flank of the main Cordillera of the Andes, at an air distance of approximately 50 miles southeast of Santiago, the capital of Chile. The region is mountainous and space is at a premium because of the rough terrain and the danger of snowslides. The ore, a porphyry copper, is mined by a block-caving method in the El Teniente mine. It is hauled to the crushing plant, a distance of 2.6 miles, through a tunnel because of the severe climatic conditions. The usual large, coarsely set, primary reduction machines found in many ore-treating plants are not required because of the mining method employed and the limiting 12-in. spacing of the grizzlies at the head of each ore pass in the mine. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the numerous improvements made in the crushing section of this large flotation concentrator during the past 15 years to increase the efficiency of the plant and to raise the daily output from around 20,000 to 30,000 tons. The reader should keep in mind that all changes were made within the existing building because of the limited space and the high cost of the heavy mill construction required to withstand the snow loads. The present plant, as well as the former, operates on a 24-hr, 7 days a week basis. FORMER PLANT The crushing plant commenced operations at its present site in 1921, the main equipment being No. 7 1/2 gyratories, followed by 48-in. horizontal Symons disk crushers. Fines were removed by 1-in. stationary grizzlies ahead of each unit. In 1924 a third stage of crushing was provided by the addition of 55 1/2-in. rolls in open circuit. During 1925, the Symons disks were replaced by 73 1/2-in. rolls. All the rolls were changed to closed circuit, with elevators and screens to give a final product of 9 pct plus 3-mesh. The flowsheet of a typical crushing section of this period is shown in Fig I. The ore was withdrawn from a common bin serving the five crushing sections in the plant by means of any number up to six 36-in. wide-apron feeders, which discharged onto a common conveyor belt. This conveyor was equipped with a magnetic head pulley and the crusher attendant was stationed near the discharge end to pick out pieces of mine timber that might be in the ore. The ore was discharged over a 1 3/4-in. spaced bar grizzly and the oversize of this grizzly was crushed by a No. 7 1/2 McCully gyratory crusher set at 1 3/4-in. opening on the closed side. The grizzly undersize joined the gyratory discharge and was conveyed to a set of 73 1/2 by 20-in. Garfield rolls set at I in. These rolls operated in closed circuit with a bucket elevator and two vibrating screens placed in parallel.

For a number of years prior to the world war, the firm of Geo. H. Thacher & Co., of Albany, N. Y., was engaged in the manufacture of marine and other gray-iron castings. At the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture of propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods of manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this pratctice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface of each blade must be chipped to the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin of the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days of foundry work and about the same length of time for the machining. Through the use of the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity with any particular propeller-wheel design.

Interfacing new or improved unit operations SUBMODULES with the EXECUTIVE of a macro analysis simulator usually requires modification of the input data. For example, particle processing SUBMODULES that are sufficiently general in nature to provide useful predictions require input data for rather narrow size fractions. Such data is not always available for the EXECUTIVE and must therefore be generated by the SUBMODULE. A successful interface to allow incorporation of a new SUBMODULE for comminution and one for classification in a general stream state flowsheet simulator is presented. The general nature of the SUBMODULES, as well as the logic of expanding and contracting the required data input is discussed.

Last November, when the British Educational Mission was visiting this country, letters were sent to the various mining schools asking what arrangements had been made for cooperating with British and. French schools. Of the eleven schools from which replies were received, none had taken any definite steps in this direction. The Colorado School of Mines, though, stated that it was offering scholarships to all men who had served in the U. S. Army and Navy during the war. A letter was also sent to Sir Henry Miers, Vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester, who was the head of the British Mission. He replied as follows: "In my opinion the mining profession is second to none in the responsibility of the duties which it involves or to which it leads in all parts of the world; also it is a. profession in which the student or teacher has much to gain by migrating to foreign countries. This applies in a special degree to British students coming to America where they will be able to enlarge their views by a widened experience. We (the Mission) have everywhere found the most, cordial acceptance of such proposals. Several of the British Universities have recently instituted a new doctorate of philosophy attainable after 2 or 3 years course of advanced study; this scheme includes Oxford and Manchester. The conditions admitting to the degree course are that the applicant should be a graduate of an approved University and should show evidence that he is qualified to pursue the course which lie proposes." In a conversation with Prof. Alfred C. Lane, of Tufts College, Sir Henry Miers said that students from Great Britain should be most easily attracted to America, both to universities and colleges and technological institutions.. The statistical data given in this paper are taken from the actual performance of the No. 2 reverberatory furnace of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Mc Gill, Nev., for a period of four months, from April to July, 1914. The principal furnace dimensions are: Length, 132 ft. % in. at the skim-line level; average width, 18 ft., 10 in. at the skim-line level. The roof is 7 ft. above the skim-line level at the firing end. The average area in the uptake flue is 36 sq. ft., and the area above the skim line under the vulcatory arch is 24.3 sq. ft. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic plan and sectional elevation of this furnace. The furnace is equipped with two 400-b.h.p. Stirling waste-heat boilers set in parallel. California crude petroleum is used for fuel and has a specific gravity of 16.5" B., flashing in open test at 199" F. The oil is heated to about 200" F. in a steam heater before going to the burners, requiring about 9 b.h.p. per furnace day to heat it from the line temperature to the burning temperature. Measurement is made by oil meter, checked daily by reservoir readings. The oil is fed by gravity (34 Ib. static pressure) to seven low-pressure blast burners of the Steptoe type (Fig. 2). The blast for these burners is supplied at about 40-08. pressure by a motor-driven Connersville blower of 42 cu. ft. capacity per revolution. The air supplied by the blower through the burners for atomizing the oil amounts to about 10 per cent. of the theoretical air necessary for complete combustion of the oil. The remainder of the necessary air enters the furnace through the burner openings in the firing wall. No checker holes are provided, and the charge holes in the roof are equipped with slide gates and " dog houses" to minimize air leakages. The combustion of the fuel, as shown by gas analysis at the front of the furnace, is practically complete, the carbon monoxide in the gases being less than 0.5 per cent. The draft at the firing end of the furnace is 0.18 in. of water. At the throat or in the uptake above the "verb" the draft is about 1 in.

Tlze green electroluminescence occurring at liquid-nitvogen temperature in epitaxial gallium phosphide diodes is exarnined using the donor dopants silicon and sulfur. Zinc is used as the p-type diffusant. Two tt~ain peaks are found, namely til 0.56 and 0.535 p. ThE development of high-purity, large single crystals of epitaxially grown gallium phosphide is the ultimate aim of the studies to be reported. While a number of papers and reviews' have been presented on properties of gallium phosphide grown from gallium solution and from the melt, less attention has been paid to the properties of epitaxial gallium phosphide grown from the vapor. In the studies to be reported we have examined the effects of shallow donor impurities, primarily silicon and sulfur, at liquid-nitrogen temperature, on both the electrical and green electroluminescent properties of carefully characterized single-crystal epitaxial Gap. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Material Preparation and Properties. The samules used in this investigation were single-crystal n-type epitaxial gallium phosphide. he single crystals were synthesized from the elements by vapor transport and epitaxial deposition on single-crystal gallium arsenide substrates. Typical transport agents used were chlorides. The growth procedures are described in more detail in Ref. 2. The samples were grown in the (111) orientation and had thicknesses up to 480 . Following the growth, the GaAs substrate was removed from the epitaxial Gap by etching in nitric acid. The Hall effect and resistivity of these n-type samples were measured as a function of temperature and analyzed for impurity content and compared with spectroscopic emission analysis. The results are given in greater detail in Ref. 3 but a summary is noted in Table I. In Table I, AED denotes the donor ionization energy, Nd is the donor impurity concentration, lvA is the acceptor impurity concentration, NI is the total impurity concentration, Rip vs temperature is the measured Hall mobility-temperature relationship from liquid nitrogen to about 400"K, n(77"K) is the measured carrier concentration at liquid nitrogen, and R/p(77'~) is the measured Hall mobility at liquid nitrogen. Good agreement is noted between electrical and emission analysis for the major donor impurity, silicon, in the two materials where it is a major constituent. In the case of the two samples SC90-6 and AP138-3(111) B which were sulfur-doped the ionization energy found from the electrical data is in good agreement with that reported for sulfur.4 The acceptor impurities are not known, although from the presence of magnesium in the samples as indicated by emission analysis and its known role as an acceptor in GaP,4 magnesium could be present as an acceptor. Similarly, since silicon is known to be an amphoteric impurity4 it may also be present as an acceptor in the Gap.* The *A small band has been noted at 0.625 11 in samples SC90-6, SC76-4, and SC77-4, suggesting according to Ref. 5 that sillcon could be present as an acceptor In these samples since these authors have found this peak to represent a donor-silicon emission. presence of calcium deduced from emission analysis is not correlatable with the electrical analysis and its presence as an electrically active impurity should be questioned. B) Sample Preparation and Diode Fabrication. The original slices were of the order of 2 sq cm in area witi the (111)B face up. The material was cleaved and sectioned and the best pieces selected (i.e., those which visually appeared to have the least strain and defects). The samples were polished, lightly etched, and cleaned in trichloroethylene. Zinc was diffused in a closed tube at 800°C to form a p-n junction. Diodes were made from these samples. The depth of junction varied, but did not exceed 10 p depth. I DESIRE to say that, owing to the number of papers which have been more or less crowded at this session of the Institute, and the fact that, as one of the Local Committee, I have the distinguished honor to feel somewhat like one of the hosts, I should not tax the patience of members at this late hour, but would have my paper read by title were it in any way possible to do this. But the task I have set myself this evening is to present to the eyes of the members of the Institute certain objects which have occupied more or less of my time during the last eighteen months or two years. The objects I allude to are some of the igneous rocks of this country, which, until quite recently, have been less understood than any others. It will be well known to some of the members that some of the cooled lavas of a previous age of our planet, when not directly coarsely crystalline and granular, were considered and spoken of as " natural glasses," or perfectly uncrystalline, vitreous, or hyaline masses of matter. Among the first results of the use of the microscope was the dispersion of this fallacy. Sir David Brewster, Mr. H. C. Sorby, and William Nichol (the discoverer of the celebrated calcite prism, which bears his name), had, with greater or less success, examined sections of various rocks and minerals, both by transmitted and reflected light, and also in the form of powder. But, until the genius of Vogelsang undertook the subject, these investigations had no permanent value, nor did they constitute an independent line of mineralogical and geological research. Since the close of his labors, by Vogelsang's premature and much-lamented death, the subject has been made one of renewed interest by his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Zirkel, as well as by Rosenbusch, Tschermak, and many others abroad, and at home by the commencement of a systematic study of the traps of Connecticut by Messrs. E. D. Dana and G. W. Hawes, of New Haven, and by the splendid set of described sections of the traps of the West which have been furnished by Zirkel to illustrate Clarence King's report. I had the honor of presenting a large number of thin sections of our traps at the Washington meeting, for the inspection of the members, with the aid of a table microscope belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. It is unnecessary to repeat here the contents of many valuable contributions to this subject which have appeared in the Dansactions and in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. As a basis for the further suggestions of this paper, the following are the most important: 1. The investigation of J. R. Don,' showing the gold of certain Australasian veins to have been deposited by ascending solutions, and not by lateral secretion. 2. The theory of Prof. Posepny? distinguishing the vadose from the deep circulation, and ascribing the origin of certain classes of ore-deposits to ascending solutions of the latter class. 3. The theory of Prof. Van Hise,3 as to the underground circulation and the primary enrichment of veins thereby. 4. The paper of Prof. J. F. Kemp,4 showing that ore-deposits are largely the products of " expiring vulcanism." Many. of Prof. Kemp's ideas have been widely adopted by mining men. 5. The theory of secondary enrichment, so lucidly expounded by Mr. S. F. Emmons.V his theory, dealing with the rearrangement of ore-bodies after primary mineralization, has been generally adopted, and seems to me to have been as completely proved as the nature of the case permits. ArcHodrilling (Arcuate Hole Drilling) of short radius overhead curved holes from within the working level with a new, small-diameter in-the-hole drill produces tangible, assayable chip samples from the entire height of the projected mine level where the hole arcs down immediately in front of the working face. Drilling through the projected level with diamond coring tools produces samples showing the competence of roof and floor strata as well as the geological and economic characteristics of the ore. Hand-portable solid state electronic surveying instrument has been developed to survey the ArcHole and a convenient nomograph plotting record sheet converts survey digital readouts to hole inclination in degrees, to radius of curvature in feet, and to attitude of the plane of curvature from vertical in degrees, all without calculation. The ArcHodrilling system offers a tool with which the exploration geologist can more nearly assess the true potential of old mining properties being reexamined and to reduce the number of surface diamond drill holes needed to secure development data about new ore bodies. It gives the mine geologist an opportunity to secure those data at a fraction of the cost of drilling from the surface. The mining supervisor has a convenient, cheap tool to look ahead to know what he will be mining tomorrow. The mill supervisor has an opportunity to reduce his mineral loss in tailings by being able to anticipate the grade of his mill feed.

The manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In certain respects they have a strong resemblance to those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia, but in this paper no careful comparison with them can be made. Viewed from the present condition of the manganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments. Youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide in the rocks of both groups. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate degree of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows, largely of basic types. This has been named the Birrim System. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. Since these non-fossiliferous strata at many plaees are of a character which in many parts of the world are suitable for the preservation of fossils, and which contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim System have normally a northeast-southwest strike, and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts. From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed diagonally across their strike for upwards of 600 miles, to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence they probably extend much farther into French territory.

The Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. The two tunnels parallel each other and are 59 ft. apart, center to center (Fig. 1) They are for vehicular traffic, and in each there is ample space for two lines of vehicles. Northbound traffic, toward downtown Pitts- burgh, is confined to the east tunnel and southbound traffic to the west tunnel. The South Hills residential district is separated from downtown Pittsburgh by Mount Washington, a steeply rising escarpment south of and adjacent to the Monongahela River. The principal events in the oil and gas operations for Louisiana during 1933 have been the rapid development of the Converse field in Sabine Parish, the discovery of three new salt domes, one in North Louisiana and two in South Louisiana, increased development in the Iowa field on the Calcasieu-Jefferson Davis Parish line, and extensive geophysical operations over a wide territory. Other miscellaneous events worthy of mention are the continued leasing of prospective oil lands over a wide area, extension of production at the East Hackberry field, Cameron Parish, discovery of deep sands at Caillou Island, Terrebonne Parish, and the completion of several important wildcats. Despite proration, oil production showed a substantial increase during 1933. The total output for this area was 25,599,802 bbl. as compared with 22,507,387 bbl. during 1932. North Louisiana There were 111 oil wells and 47 gas wells completed in North Louisiana during 1933 as compared with 109 oil wells and 33 gas wells during 1932. North Louisiana oil production decreased approximately 692,625 bbl. in 1933 from its 1932 figure. The normal decline in the old fields was partly offset by increased production at the Zwolle and Converse fields in Sabine Parish. Acid treatment of wells in the Zwolle, Converse and Monroe fields was highly successful. The method of application has been described by H. K. Shearer, Geologist, Pelican Natural Gas Co., as fo1lows:l With tubing in the hole and standing valve removed, the casing is filled with oil to the surface. The limestone solvent is pumped in through the tubing, at the same time bleeding off enough oil from the casinghead to equal the volume contained in the tubing plus the volume of open hole to be treated. The amount of solvent used in most of the wells treated was 1000 gal., which is enough to dissolve about 11 cu. ft. of chalk or limestone. After the computed amount of oil is bled off, the casinghead is closed and the remainder of the solvent is pumped in at whatever pressure is necessary to force it into the oil-producing horizon. THE entrance of geophysics and geochemistry into petroleum engineering may be viewed with apprehension by some engineers. They may not remember the time when "practical oil men" opposed the invasion of engineers into the field of petroleum production. By their excellent contributions they established themselves. In the popular mind, engis veers are practical men whereas physicists and chemists are suspected of being theoretical. It will be best to annihilate this misconception right now at the beginning of a closer relationship between petroleum engineers. geophysicists, and geochemists.
