The development in the perfection of mine-surveying instruments has been by no means rapid, as it has depended somewhat on the details of construction borrowed from astronomical and geodetic theodolites, largely on the restrictions laid down by mining companies and the prejudices of mine managers themselves, but more than all on the methods used in conducting surveys and the importance attached thereto. Mine-surveying, in some form or other, has been practiced from the very earliest times; but it has never kept pace with the other branches of surveying, or even with the art of mining itself, and cannot be recognized as an exact science until shortly before the beginning of this century. The works of Hero of Alexandria, who lived in the second century B.C., are still extant, and contain descriptions of a rectangular sighting-instrument, which he invented and called a diopter. His improvement upon this simple construction, which possibly he devised for use in the Greek mines for rough leveling-purposes and for laying out any angle, must be considered, says Hübner," as the origin of the highly perfected theodolite of to-day. Whether this instrument came into general use during the first centuries of the Christian era, is not recorded; in fact, no writer undertakes to tell how mine-surveying was conducted until 1556, in which year Agricola expounds the principles of mining and metallurgy in his De Re Metallica, devoting the entire fifth chapter to the practice of mine-surveying (see Fig. 1). STRIKING new developments in the field of industrial minerals include the employment of lime, salt, coal, and air for the manufacture of stockings, and the substitution of paper for granite and marble in making tombstones. Certain minerals that have heretofore been regarded as valueless except as museum or laboratory specimens, are now being applied commercially. Serpentine, in forms neither fibrous nor ornamental, massive topaz, pinite, and zoisite are examples. For certain other minerals, notably pyrophyllite, bentonite, vermiculite, and sulphur, extension of established uses into new fields has occurred. Substitution takes a toll in many industries, but producers of industrial minerals as a class have gained more than they have lost in recent years. Encouraging progress has been made in developing at long last a suitable substitute for certain of the uses of mica, the only industrial mineral on the strategic list of commodities established by the War. and Navy Munitions Board. On Aug. 25, 1911, a rail failed on the Lehigh Valley Railroad, causing a disastrous wreck. The surface of the fracture was in a plane at right angles to the length of the rail. There was a dark-colored, oval spot on this surface, located on the gage side of the head, representing the part of the rail which was the first to fracture. The nucleus of this spot showed that the fracture had an interior origin. Other fractures of this kind, the peripheries of which had not reached the surface of the rail, presented surfaces having a (silvery luster. The darkened surface of the present fracture was caused, doubtless, by the air having had access to it. This fracture was recognized as a fatigue fracture, of a modified type, its interior origin having been due to a component in the rail which is not usually present in cases of fatigue fractures. The metal next the running surface of the head of the rail was in a state of internal compression, this being the component not commonly met with in other cases, and which caused the fracture to have its interior origin. For the purpose of giving this modified type of fatigue fracture a specific name, for identification, the term "transverse fissure" was applied. No mystery was thought to attach to its formation, or to its development. The explanation of its occurrence seemed obvious in the light of common knowledge upon the behavior of steel under repeated alternate stresses.' By reason of the state of internal compression at the running surface, the maximum tensile stresses in the head, ander bending loads, were along an interior element. Here the tensile strains were higher than in the fibers more remote from the neutral axis. Under such conditions the fracture of the rail would be expected to have an interior origin. A discussion of the subject of transverse fissures essentially becomes a discussion of fatigue fractures, since they are believed to be identical. The descriptive term employed, merely for the identification of this type of fatigue fracture, had the appearance of creating alarm. The connection between short-range order and thermodynamic activities in binary solid solutions has been pointed out by Birchenall1 who calculated approximate values of the energy of interaction of Zn and Cu and of the degree of short-range order in alpha-brass at one composition and two temperatures. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a somewhat more accurate theory than that used by Birchenall and to extend the calculations to a wider range of temperatures and compositions as a means of testing its applicability. This is an example of the well-known general method of comparing measured thermodynamic functions of a system with those calculated from a microscopic model by means of statistical mechanics. In this case, mathematical approximations must be used which make difficult any decision about the validity of the model. Birchenall's statistical method resembles closely that calletl by Fowler and Guggenheim2 the "quasi-chemical" method which has been shown to lead in certain cases to results identical with those obtained by the method of Bethe.3 The quasi-chemical method has been extended by Takagi4 to give general formulas for the free energy of binary solid solutions based on several lattices at all compositions and temperatures. Specifically, he treats the four systems typified by: I. ß—brass; 2. a— brass; 3. AuCus; 4. AuCu. OUR present-day geological surveys show that 36 of our States are underlain with bituminous coal, covering a total area of 496,709 square miles. The North American continent possesses 69 per cent of the world's coal reserves, with the United States alone having an estimated 55 per cent. The American coal reserves, in tons, are calculated to he about 3,500,000,000,000 tons, of which we have exhausted about 1 to 1 1/2 per cent. If this coal were mined at the rate of the 1918 production-a record output of 579;000,000 tons-it would not be depleted for 4,000 years. The more easily accessible and high-grade coals would obviously be consumed much before this; some estimates are 100 years. The natural progress of the nation's industries up to 1910 encouraged on every hand the development of new mines, especially where cheap and easy access to coal measures was coupled with short hauls to the consumer. Over-development resulted, which is perhaps today one of the fundamental causes for the many difficulties faced by the coal industry, which is highly competitive; about 70 per cent of the production cost is labor. (communication to the Secretary): In connection with Mr. Douglas's mention of the continuous charcoal kiln used at Kopparberg, some further data concerning this important invention may be of interest. Before giving these, however, I will say a word or two concerning other features of Swedish practice. In 1894 I spent two days at Soderfers with Mr. Tom Bergendal, the manager of the works, and was specially interested in the gas-producers and wood-drying kiln, illustrated in the paper contributed to our Transactions by Mr. Odelstjerna in that year.* The wood-drying kiln is, however, quite different in design and construction from Ljungberg's charcoal kiln. In the summer of 1894 it was discovered that by placing the gas-producer as close as possible to the open-hearth furnace, and working the producer hot, ordinary weather-dried wood, still containing a considerable percentage of moisture, could be used to advantage in the melting-furnace. Hence, the dryingkiln was needed for wet wood only. One of the iron-works of the Udeholm Go. was the first to adopt the Lundin saw-dust gas-producer and condenser, enabling them to make gas from saw-dust containing 45 per cent. of moisture, and convey the gas from the condenser through wooden pipes to the Siemens steel-melting furnace.† This sawdust gas gave very satisfactory results in iron-works; but the proprietors experienced much trouble by reason of the pollution of rivers by the tar-water from the condenser. The impact of the work of Herty "et al" on modern liquid steel technology can only be evaluated by first setting the stage as it existed in 1926. It is important to briefly review not only the steel making process and viewpoints regarding methods of refining, but also to describe the tools which were available for research at the time. One must recall that only 15 years before the beginning of this program, the open hearth production exceeded that of the Bessemer in the United States. Many open hearths were still operating on producer gas (a very inefficient fuel), although some plants were converting to the use of natural gas and very few to oil. Continuous rolling of wide strip started this year. The Faraday Society in England held a World Conference on Physical Chemistry in Steel Making in 1925 and the contributions to this work created considerable interest throughout the world and it appeared that physical chemistry might convert the art of steel making into a science. These papers, however, attempted to solve the problems through the use of the older physical chemical concepts such as Nernst's numbers, etc. and considerable data were missing. In 1923, Lewis and Randall had published their book Thermodynanzicsl and this was later to establish and standardize the steps which are now accepted for the calculation of physico-chemical equations. At the time this research work was started, there were no small high frequency induction furnaces. Mechanical properties of the nether roof rocks play a substantial role in maintenance of mine openings. On longwall faces too low strength is a cause of rock- falls which bring about delays in face advance, and hazard to the miners, while too high strength may result in over hanging of roof rocks in gobs, sometimes over a large area, initiating dynamic periodical pressures. Hence, efforts have been undertaken to develop methods of caveability evaluation for proper selection of roof control system and of longwall-face supports. DESCRIPTIVE CLASSIFICATIONS One of the basic qualitative criteria for classification of roof types with different caveability is the criterion of geological structure. The 26-stages scale worked out for conditions of Donetz Coalfield. USSR, by E.T. Proyavkin et al.(l) may be an example of that type of classification. This scale is presented graphically in Fig. 1. The first types of roofs according to this scale are easily caving immediately after exposure of a small surface, while the last be- long to the strongest roofs which over-hang in waste and require artificial fracturing. Observations and measurements carried out also in Donetz mines lead W.T. Davidyanc (2) to following classification: Class I - weak and densely bedded rocks very easily caving after each advance of supports. The roof subsidence over a waste edge is: [ ] where: h is roof subsidence, m M is thickness of the seam being mined, m S is width of an opening, m Class II - medium caveability and small main roof movements [ ] Class III - hardly breakable rocks, thicker beds with higher strength: caving by large blocks. After exposure of larger roof surfaces the movements of the main roof strata may affect an opening. [ ] Class IV - very hardly breakable rocks - thick, monolithic sandstones: they cause considerable difficulties in working with caving. [ ] Class V - thin-bedded rocks featured by the capacity of a smooth subsidence without disintegration into loose blocks with keeping contact between the particular blocks in a bed. In this classification mining with full roof caving is recommended for class I-III and only exceptionally for class IV. In many coal fields, qualitative and quantitative observations of roof rocks behavior have been carried out: as a result relations and characteristics found in certain mines are given. As an example, Kizielov Coalfield data in the USSR given by B.S. Vinokur (3) may be mentioned. In working thin pitching seams man- less system of undercutting the seam by means of rope saw is used there. The author separated four classes of roofs and gave, for every class, the empirical relation between the extracted area and the time of roof stability. The size of the stable area of exposed roof for particular classes is as follows: 120 to 150 m2 (1291 to 1614 ft2 ), 170 to 200 m2 (1829 to 2152 ft2), 250 to 280 m2 (2690 to 3013 ft2 ) and 350 to 400 m2 (3766 to 4300 ft ). For Kuznetz coalfield in the USSR the following classification of roofs was developed at the WIMI Institute in Leningrad: Class I - completely unstable: impact strength in- dex of rock f = up to 1.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during the time not longer than 5 min. Class II - low stability: f = 1.5 to 2.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and up to 4.0 m (13 it) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during 5 to 20 min. Class III - medium stability: f = 2.51 to 3.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide and 4.0 to 25 m (13 to 82 ft) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable from 20 min. to 2 hours. Class IV - stable: f = 3.51 to 4.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and 25 m (82 it) long exposed after shearer's cut is stable during the time longer than 2 hours. A Discussion of the Paper of Prof. Howe. (Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 14, March, 1907, pp. 169 to 274.) P. H. DUDLEY, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The characteristics of Prof. Howe's metallurgical papers are, that he is able, from the mass of confusing evidence on the subject, to make an analysis and present hypothetical and essential principles in concrete form for consideration and discussion. I can appreciate, from the practical side of the subject, the arduous labor of collecting and investigating the data that is essential to prepare the paper. Much of the data necessarily came from material of preceding years. of manufacture in which there was allowed time for chemical reactions of the recarburizer, and for the elimination of the oxidation-products before teeming the ingots. This condition gave a favorable tinge-element to free the metal from slag- and other impurities, but, in allowing the. ingot to cool before charging in the furnace, the time-element entered as a detrimental factor in the development of the pipe or shrinkage-cavities, which gave an ingot-structure deficient in soundness. The interpretations from such material must be made with due allowances for the methods of manufacture, and must be given proper weight, as general facts, in subsequent arguments. The difficulties under which investigators labor are not easily surmounted in differentiating between reliable and unreliable data incident to variables of methods of manufacture, chemical composition of the alloys of steel, mediocre practice and that of the highest state of the art. FOLLOWING the discovery of a body of ore that appears to have commercial possibilities there is a period of development work to determine its extent and grade and the most economical method of mining it. Laboratory tests are made in an effort to determine the most practicable and economical treatment for the extraction of the valuable constituents of the ore and these tests are carried farther and checked in a pilot or test mill. The rate at which the ore is to be mined and the daily capacity of the plants that are to treat it will depend on a number of important factors such as: The size of the orebody; the capital available for building the plants; the market or demand for the final product; the supply of skilled and common labor available for the construction, operation and maintenance of the plants; the quantity and quality of available water, and the amount and cost of power that can be purchased or that can be economically developed. Having decided on the treatment that is to be given to the ore and after full consideration of the above factors the management decides to erect a reduction plant of a given capacity.

GAYLER, Teddington, England (written discussion).-At the National Physical Laboratory, the writers have made a number of researches on the relation between the constitution and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of various types; the results obtained were in good general agreement with those of the authors. The writers, however, did not think that increasing the copper content of sand-cast low-copper duralumin to 4 per cent. necessarily caused a drop in the elongation to 1.5 per cent., as stated on page 9. In the case of sand-cast copper-aluminium alloys they had obtained much greater elongation, in some cases as great as 13 per cent. in heat-treated castings. For example, in a sand casting containing 3.5 per cent. of copper, a strength of 12 tons per square inch and an elongation of 13 per cent. were obtained; in a casting containing 4.5 per cent. copper, a tensile strength of 13 tons, and an elongation of 9 per cent. were obtained. These values were the maximum; the elongation varied considerably, being as low as 5 per cent. in some cases. In the writers' opinion, such variations are due more to unsoundness in the sand casting than to any other cause.

CENTRALLY located with relation to the largest iron- and steel-producing districts of the United States, the fluorspar-deposits of Kentucky possess increasing interest and importance. As typical of the numerous fluorspar-mines of Kentucky and Illinois, I have selected for description the Memphis., because it and others of its immediate group exhibit the conditions characteristic of all. I. THE MEMPHIS MINE. This mine lies 5 miles NW. of Marion, in Crittenden county, Kentucky, a station on the Chicago and Nashville division of the Illinois Central R. R. For the first mile and a half out of Marion we see only Birdsville or Middle Chester sandstones of Mississippian age. Then we cross a fault of some 350 ft. displacement, and the Ste. Genevieve oolite sets in. Beyond the fault, oolite is the predominant rock, except that the bills to the north have a capping of Cypress or lowest Chester sandstone, 80 ft. below which is an outcrop of from 6 to 10 ft. of Ste. Genevieve (Rosiclare) sandstone. Occasional sink-holes are noticed, and as the mines are approached evidence of faulting is again seen.. A line of crude head-frames and open-cut dumps, extending for more than a quarter of a mile, marks the Klondike vein. The open-cuts are from 15 to 20 ft. deep, and in most of them, from the surface down, was found the reddish gravel which is really fluorspar-some of it white or purple and crystal-clear (if the red clay is washed off), and some carrying iron and silica, and stained by waters from the decaying limestone walls. In one of these cuts, at a depth of 20 ft., white and purplish honey-combed fluorspar was found, in which the larger cavities are due to limestone and calcite leaching, and the minute ones to the leaching of zinc-blende.

For the second consecutive year, the production of crude petroleum in New York has fallen below the 5,000,000-bbl. Mark that had prevailed previously since 1937. In 1945, the output totaled 4,658,000 bbl., a decrease of slightly more, than one per cent from the 1944 production. This total represents 2 per cent of the stripper-well production of the United States, which in turn is I 3 per cent of the total annual yield of the nation's petroleum.

THERE was once a time when a practical oil man would appraise or buy a producing property on the basis of from $200 to $500 per barrel of average daily settled production. Curtailment-has, for the present at least, caused a virtual abandonment of the "barrel -of settled production" as a yardstick of, oil property value and in its place has come the "barrel of allowable production," which, although an artificial thing, is nevertheless now the principal factor governing the rate of ?pay out? or investment return. The potential production of a well, settled or otherwise, is of less importance in determining the present worth of a well than is the rate at which it may be produced. Speaking only of true potential for the moment, it is obvious that of two similar wells having the same potential, the one having the highest rate of allowable production would be worth proportionately more than the one of lesser allowable. The discount factor for deferred return and risk can easily vary the present values of the two wells by as much as 20 per cent when allowable rates are not greatly different.
