GENERAL GEOLOGY Coal is defined as a combustible rock that had its origin in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the somewhat unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks being returned to earth will, we hope, provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust of the earth is not completely stable, and throughout the geologic past portions of the crust have moved laterally and vertically. Even today, many coastal areas are slowly rising or sinking. More sudden earth movements are recognized by the earthquakes they cause. Throughout geologic history, rises in sea level or the sinking of the land areas have many times permitted the oceans to cover much of what are now the areas of the continents. At the Jeffrey mine of Canadian Johns-Manville Co. in Asbestos, Que., automatic batched concrete from surface is placed underground pneumatically for distances of 2500 ft directly into forms or to a second placer for greater distances, through 6-in. pipe of high carbon steel. The use of Celite C-4-C in addition to the usual aggregates achieves greater compressive strengths, lowers cost, reduces segregation, and improves workability and placeability results. Each year 25,000 cu yd of concrete are placed without interrupting production and development work in the mine, making possible a cheaper concrete that can be poured wherever and whenever it is needed. In about 90 pct of the underground openings in the Jeffrey mine concrete is necessary to preserve them in their original sizes and shapes for production. In the remaining 5 pct, the greater portion is united with or without steel support. When large quantities of concrete were forecast for underground use at the Jeffrey mine, preliminary and first hand information regarding pneumatic placing was acquired from articles by Bernhardt and Swanson and visits to their respective mines.

INTRODUCTION IN the last few years this laboratory has published a series of papers on the mecha¬nism of age -hardening.14,1,6,11,20 Briefly stated it has been proposed that hardening is caused by lattice strains created by lat¬tice coherency between matrix and precipi¬tate; much experimental evidence has been advanced to support this thesis. The system Cu-Be is an attractive one to study. It is a system that exhibits marked age hardening; it ought to be subject to the type of analysis of structural changes hitherto explored and it is a prominent example of "discontinuous precipitation," which, though studied in other cases, 6,20 remains largely unexplained. This research shows that hardening in the Cu-Be system proceeds essentially as proposed earlier.14 Guinier-Preston zones have been observed to form on the {100) planes of the matrix; no transition lattice was found. Aging and overaging were ob¬served to occur most rapidly in the region of discontinuous precipitation-the grain boundary-apparently accelerated there by strain. The Constitution of the Cu-Be System The Cu-Be constitution diagram is shown in Fig I. The structure of the ? phase was determined by Misch16 as of the caesium-chloride type with a lattice con¬stant of 2.598 Å High temperature X ray photograms of 7.2 pct Be alloy made by Kossolapow and Trapesnikow13 led them to conclude that the structure of the P phase is simply disordered body-centered cubic with [ao] = 2.79 Å at 750°C. Previous Work The initial work on the age-hardening of Cu-Be alloys was that of Masing, Dahl, Holm, and Haase. Their numerous papers were published in book form in 1929, sub¬sequently translated.18 The effects of Be content, solution temperature, aging tem¬perature, and cold work on the hardness developed in these alloys were studied. An initial decrease in the electrical conduc¬tivity was observed when strips of a 2.5 pct Be alloy were aged at temperatures from 200 to 350°C; a wire of the same analysis failed to exhibit this decrease when aged at 350°C. A volume decrease of 0.6 pct oc¬curred during aging at 250°C. Microscopic investigations of quenched and aged alloys disclosed a regularly ori¬ented "striping" (ripples) on the a and on the ß grains. Heats of formation of Au-Zn alloys of compositions Au3Zn and AuZn were rneasured at several temperatures by liquid tin solution calorimetry. The data for Au3Zn show that much smaller heat and entropy effects are associated with the a2- a1 transformation than for the a1 - a transformation. This result is consistent with reported X-ray diffraction studies which indicate that the a1 and (a2 phases have ordered structures which only slightly differ, whereas the a phase is disordered. The heat of formation of AuZn(ß') does not change significantly between 322o and 8000 K, confirming that the ß' alloy remains highly ordered to high temperatures. Not many measurements have been made of the energies of order-disorder transformations in alloy phases. In many cases these energies may be conveniently determined by measuring heats of formation as a function of temperature. Many alloy phases approximately obey Kopp's law of additivity of heat capacities; as a consequence their heats of formation do not change with temperature. In ordered alloys, however, a decrease in degree of order with increasing temperature will contribute an endothermic component to the heat of formation. Thus, for ordered phases where other anomalous contributions to heat capacity in the alloy or its pure components are absent, a measured change in the heat of formation may be attributed to the energy of disordering. A portion of the Au-Zn phase diagram1" is shown in Fig. 1. The composition AuZn(ß') has a well-ordered superlattice structure of the CsCl type at room temperature. The alloy is considered to remain ordered to its melting point,1 although, from X-ray diffraction data and electromotive force measurements of zinc activities, Terpilowski3 concluded that considerable disordering began at -673°K. The Au3Zn composition is a disordered fee solid solution (a) at high temperatures. Between 693o and 543oK, the ailoy orders to form the a1 phase, having a structure based on the L12(AuCu3) type, but with a regular distribution of ordering faults in the c direction, making it tetragonal. Below 543oK, the alloy orders further by means of slight atomic shifts, without diffusion, yielding a complex long-period orthorhom-bic superlattice structure, a2.4-7 Heats of formation of Au3Zn(a2) and AuZn(ß') were measured at 363°K by Biltz et al.8 by aqueous solution calorimetry. Heat capacities of several alloys between 14.9 and 38.4 at. pet Zn in the range from 373" to 723°K were measured by Iwasaki ef al.6 Stoichiometric Au3Zn, however, was not included in the alloys measured, the nearest composition being 26.1 at, pet Zn. Also, the heating rate used for the measurements, 2 deg per min, may not have permitted equilibrium to be reached in the neighborhood of the transformations. Heat contents of solid and liquid AuZn were measured between 488o and 1138°K by Kubaschewski.9 It was decided to determine the ordering energies of Au3Zn and to check on the possible disordering of AuZn by measuring the heats of formation of these alloys at several temperatures. The present paper reports measurements by liquid tin solution calorimetry of the heats of formation of the three phases of Au3Zn at temperatures within their regions of stability, and of AuZn at a low (322°K) and a high (800°K) temperature. EXPERIMENTAL Alloy Preparation and X-Ray Examination. Ten-gram ingots of Au3Zn and AuZn were prepared by melting weighed amounts of gold (99.95 pct Au) and zinc (99.99 pet Zn) together in sealed evacuated Vycor tubes at 1060°K, followed by rapid quenching. The resulting ingots were homogenized at 900°K for 10 days. The Au3Zn alloy lost no weight in preparation, the loss from the AuZn alloy was enough to introduce an uncertainty of only 0.1 at. pet in its composition. Filings for X-ray examination were taken from various parts of each ingot and strain-annealed at 723°K for 20 min in vacuo. The Au3Zn filings were quenched rapidly to retain the disordered phase. Diffraction patterns were determined with an X-ray dif-fractometer using copper Ka radiation.

Construction of the mill started [on] August 12, 1915, at which time 75% of the excavation was completed. For this reason, if there was [for] no other, the ownership of the ore below and [of] the surface above should go together. When a unit of mapping is furnished, be the unit a claim or [a] group of claims, it is necessary .. . A fully stocked store was started in Park City and all employees [were] sold merchandise on a strictly cost basis. The word "merchandise" is left without government or agreement. I suggest: ". . . and merchandise] was sold to all the employees on a strictly cash basis.". The verb `be' is serving concurrently both as a principal and as an auxiliary in the following: At first the work was interesting and [was] liked by most of the men. The sulphide ore was more complex or [was] milled at an increased cost. The failure to repeat tie auxiliary verb in successive clauses is a common error, as in The filter is filled with liquid allowed to empty, and then ignited.

THE structures formed when austenite is quenched to subcritical temperatures and allowed to transform isothermally have been the subject of intensive study since the work of Davenport and Bain.1 Isothermal transformation diagrams summarizing the results of many of these studies have become widely familiar to metallurgists. Of particular interest to metallographers are the dark-etching, acicular products of transformation formed by isothermal reaction below the temperature of maximum velocity of the austenite to pearlite reaction. These products, the bainite structures, can be formed in a wide variety of steels. However, the constitution of bainite is not well understood and divergent views have been expressed as to its mode of formation. In this investigation a combination of dilatometric, microscopic and X-ray methods has been brought to bear upon the problem in the hope of some elucidation of the bainite reaction as it occurs in hypoeutectoid steels. MECHANISM OF BAINITE FORMATION Davenport and Bain1 considered the mechanism of bainite formation to consist of two steps-an allotropic transformation followed by precipitation of carbide. The separation in time of the two processes was considered to be very slight in the upper temperature range and very marked at temperatures just above the martensite range. This concept has been restated by Vilella, Guellich and Bain2 in the form of a definition of the acicular mode of transformation as: The successive, abrupt formation of flat plates of supersaturated ferrite along certain crystallographic planes of the austenite grains; this supersaturated ferrite begins at once to reject carbide particles, (not lamellae), at a rate depending upon temperature. In effect, this is the acicular mode of transformation, even though the temperature be such as to limit the actual life of the quasi-martensite to millionths of a second. The investigation of isothermal decomposition of austenite in certain alloy steels (notably those containing chromium or molybdenum) has revealed that there may be a range of temperatures between the pearlite and bainite reactions in which the austenite decomposes at a relatively low rate.3-6 Further, it is characteristic that in the second region of fast reaction the decomposition of the austenite is incomplete by one reaction but goes to completion by a second reaction. These observations led Wever7 to a description of the bainite reaction as follows: I. The reaction takes place by initial precipitation of a martensitic intermediate structure. 2. In the upper temperature range this structure readily decomposes into ferrite and cementite. In the lower range carbon separates in an unknown form. 3. In the upper temperature range the precipitated carbide nucleates the precipitation

A SEARCH through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1.

IT IS the purpose of this paper to summarize, as far as possible, the metallurgical information and experience gained by the Ordnance Department, during the War, in the manufacture of artillery cartridge cases, to describe the tests to which artillery cartridge cases were put, and to summarize the knowledge and experience gained in this testing. The authors wish to acknowledge the aid given by manufacturers, army officers, and civilian employees of the Ordnance Department in obtaining these data. Artillery cartridge cases are cold drawn from circular disks punched from strips of rolled brass. The manufacture involves from 25 to 30 main operations, which are done almost entirely on a punch press. Descriptions of the operations have appeared in various periodicals and, therefore, will not be given here. After each cupping, or drawing, operation, except the last, the cases are annealed at from 540° to 650° C. (1000° to 1200°F.), to remove all the hardening stresses set up in the metal and to allow complete recrystallization. After each annealing, the cases are pickled in niter cake or sulfuric-acid solution and then washed in water to remove all traces of acid. In some instances, the cases are then immersed in a cyanide-salt solution, and afterwards rinsed in water, to remove the thin layer of copper that forms on the surface of the cases during the acid pickle. The last cold-drawing operation is followed, by the heading operation which, by flattening the head of the case on the outside, causes the metal to flow on the inside to approximately the proper finished dimensions. The mouth, or open end, is then annealed at 430° to 480° C. (800° to 900° F.) by immersion in a salt bath or by gas flames. After being washed, the cases are tapered, when they are ready for machining, inspection, and testing.

The mining methods adopted in Japanese mines are less known to the mining world than those of other countries, owing to the geographical remoteness, but they present many features of interest to mining engineers. The Ashio copper mine is at the town of Ashio, in Tochigiken, about 109 mi. (175 km.) from Tokyo by the Imperial Government railroad. The area of the concession owned by the Furukawa Mining Co. is 5000 acres (5023 ha.). The mine was formerly divided into three, viz. Hon-ean, Kotaki, and Tsudo, which are distant 3 mi. (4.8 km.) from each other as shown in Fig. 1. However, in 1914, when the writer was general manager, the three mining plants were amalgamated into one with the result of simplifying the working projects and increasing the operating efficiency. The mine was visited by the Institute party in November, 1911, when K. Inouye was the general manager. Shortly afterward, the writer was appointed manager, and, in 1915, he was succeeded by Dr. K. Asano. At the end of 1917, K. Kibe became general manager and, after two years, was succeeded by the present manager, I. Sugimoto. For some time Dr. J. Kojima was acting general manager. It is necdless to say that the gentlemen mentioned are all members of the Institute, as is also Baron T. Furukawa, president of the company. Since the discovery of the enormous masses, called "kajika" or "bullhead" deposits, which the writer has described elsewhere,' the mining methods have been varied to meet the different conditions presented by these deposits. The Ashio Ore The country rock of this mine consists of the middle Chichibian slate and quartzite into which has been intruded a post-Tertiary plagio-liparite neck more than 2 mi. in diameter, in the shape of an inverted cone which narrows downward to a relatively small diameter in depth.

For every single BOF heat, the steelmaker must control the refining operation in order to satisfy at turndown the following conditions : - to reach the correct steel analysis (C, S, P, ...) in the shortest time possible, i.e. without reblow; - to maintain the temperature of the metal in a narrow range; - to produce the optimum steel weight. It is obvious that during refining limited time and scarce information are available and only very few corrective actions can be taken. For this reason, it is of the greatest importance to facilitate the control of the BOF process by taking adequate measures before and during charging of the converter. These are : - the availability of accurate and reliable equipments for the classical measurements, 5.e. weights, temperatures, flow-rates, analyses, etc... - the operation of an optimal charge calculation model which takes into account all information concerning the preceeding heats and the charged materials. '

MY first Nevada City mining reminiscence is one of seeing Capt. Thomas Mein, over 52 years ago, in the old Wyoming mill on Deer Creek about a mile below the town of Nevada City. Captain Mein was then superintendent of the Wyoming mine, where the old fashioned Cornish pump was used, as well as hurdy-gurdy water wheels for power. This mill was one of the typical, up-to-date mills of that time and consisted of stamps, fed by Chinese hand feeders, who also cobbed the ore down to a small enough size to be fed into the mortars. Stamps at that time were of light weight and crushed about one ton to one and a half tons to the stamp, the pulp going over plates, then into sluices with self-raising gates. When a sluice became full the pulp was shut off and directed into the parallel sluice, also with a self-raising gate. The concentrate thus collected in the sluice was shoveled out and carried to Cornish buddles and there cleaned up, preparatory to being sent to a local custom chlorination works.

TEN years ago, October, 1914, the author had the privilege of giving an-illustrated address on investigations of coal-dust explosions1 to this Institute at one session of its fall meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa. On the following day, the members had the opportunity of seeing a large-scale explosion test at the Experimental Mine near Bruceton, in which the explosion was made to follow a predetermined path by means of rock-dust barriers of various types, which had prevented the explosive waves from reaching the outlets of, the mine by the shortest paths.2 There was also shown a "home-made rock-dusting machine discharging the dust from a flexible nozzle, and a cement gun operated for the quick erection of a fire or ventilation stopping, such as might be put up after an explosion. Following that paper, there was presented a paper by J. Taffanel, Director of the Lievin testing station in the Pas de Calais, which reviewed the French coal-dust investigations.3 Another important paper was by Howard N. Eavenson, on Coal-mine Explosions Caused by Gas or Dust.4 This paper contains complete lists of explosions that occurred in North America and Great Britain, from early in the 19th century to 1912; in France to 1903, and in Belgium to 1909. No one can look over these lists without being struck by the great number of explosions and the, appalling aggregate of lives lost by them. Although they still happen, we-are hopeful that we have entered on a happier period of freedom from these dreaded visitations, as the result of great increase in knowledge; of the causes and means of prevention. Looking back over coal-dust investigations, there appear to have been periods of advance and of stagnation.

The conditions of temperature, strain rate, and total strain favoring deformation by grain boundary sliding, slip, or deformation with concurrent recrystallization were evaluated for alpha plutonium. Grain boundary sliding and slip were studied by examining structures formed on polished surfaces with 4.5 pct compressive deformation. The conditions required for recrystallization were determined from compressive deformation us time curves. At 110" C and at a strain rate of 10&apos;per min, deformation was almost exclusively by grain boundary sliding whereas slip was the predominant deformation mode at -10°C and lo-&apos; per min. Defarmation at intermediate tenzperatures and strain rates produced structures showing mixtures of grain boundary sliding and slip. Recrystallization occurred concurrently with deformation only after a critical strain was reached. About 14, 6, and 3 pct strain was required at 105", llO°, and lZO°C, respectively, before recrystallization started, irrespective of the strain rate in the range of lo-&apos;1 to 10&apos;4 per nzin. L HE temperature and strain-rate dependency of the modes of plastic deformation were evaluated for high-purity as-cast alpha plutonium. The techniques used to study slip and grain boundary sliding were similar to those employed previously for alpha plutonium by Bronisz and Gorum,&apos; and spriet.&apos; Recrystallization was investigated using the methods reported by Nelson.3 Bronisz and Gorum&apos; found that slip occurred on more than one slip system at room temperature, and suggested that grain boundary sliding also contributed to the deformation. spriet2 found that deformation was predominantly by slip at room temperature, and observed one to three orientations of slip traces in individual grains. In addition, he deformed polished samples at 10O° C, but concluded that the deformation character of alpha plutonium at 100° C and at room temperature were not essentially different. Several investigators reported that twinning was only occasionally observed.1&apos;2&apos;4 Nelson3 recently found in creep tests that high-purity alpha plutonium would recrystallize concurrently with compressive deformation at temperatures between 25" and 115°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Electrorefined plutonium having less than 300 ppm total impurities was received from Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in the form of +-in. diarn cast rods. Major impurities were americium, <I00 ppm, and tungsten, (60 ppm. Less than 25 ppm each of other impurities were present. The rods were cut into right half-cylinders 0.35 in. long and 0.25 in. in diam, and the flat faces along the cylinder axes were metal-lographically polished. To avoid loss of the metallo-graphic polish by oxidation, the polished samples were deformed in a silicone fluid heat treating medium contained in a chamber evacuated to a pressure of lo-&apos; torr. Deadweight loading was used to compress the samples between 4.5 and 20 pct at strain rates between 10"4 and lo- &apos; min-&apos;. Strain rates were determined by dividing the total deformation by the elapsed time of the test, even though the strain rate was not constant during deformation. Curves of strain vs time for samples deformed with a constant compressive stress3 show that the strain rate changes by less than a factor of four during the testing of a given sample, which is small compared to the three orders of magnitude change in strain rate investigated. Two samples were loaded into an ordinary metallographic mounting mold and impacted by striking the mold piston with one blow of a 2-lb hammer. Deformation temperatures for the two impact samples were 25" and 90°C. The samples, following deformation, were washed in carbon tetrachloride and their polished and deformed surfaces were immediately inspected metallographi-cally. Subsequently, the deformation structures were replicated with acetate replicating tape for later electron microscope examination, and the samples were then repolished and etched to reveal the microstruc-tures of the deformed metal. Second-stage carbon replicas were prepared from decontaminated acetate replicas using the procedure developed by Miller, Bierlein, and astel.&apos; Additional samples, which were 0.35 in. long by 0.25 in. in diam, were used to obtain constant load deformation vs time curves. These samples were deformed 10 to 20 pct with loads of 15 and 20,000 psi at 120°C; 30, 45, and 55,000 psi at 110°C; and 20 and 30,000 psi at 105°C. Samples were polished and etched to determine whether or not recrystallization or twinning had occurred during deformation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experiments showed that alpha plutonium deforms by grain boundary sliding, slip, and deformation with concurrent recrystallization. Deformation by twinning was insignificant. Metallographic examination of polished and deformed surfaces revealed grain boundary sliding and slip. The start of recrystallization was ascertained from constant load deformation vs time curves. Deformed surface structures of samples compressed 4.5 pct under four different conditions of temperature and strain rate, Fig. 1, show how the deformation mode changes from predominantly grain boundary sliding to predominantly slip with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. Deformation at 110°C and 10" 4 min-&apos;, Fig. l(a), was predominantly by grain boundary sliding. Only a few slip traces can be seen in Fig. l(a).

Studies upon the rates of oxidation of copper alloys containing small quantities of the alloying elementsl,2 have shown that steady growth of the scales at predictable rates is limited to a small concentration range and to oxidation at temperatures above 600°C., whereas unpredictable and erratic oxidation behavior is found with alloys containing larger additions and at low temperatures. The latter effect appears to be associated with modifications in the geometric disposition of the oxides. At low concentrations of the baser elements in copper, simple oxidation behavior is typified by the formation of two distinguishable zones of oxidation: (I) a subscale composed of discrete particles of the oxide of the alloying element embedded in substantially pure copper and (2) an external scale composed of cuprous oxide (with a very thin layer of cupric oxide on the outside) containing particles of the alloying element distributed throughout, but most profusely near the metal surface (see Fig. 2, top). Where this type of structure obtains, the process of oxidation is believed to be implemented, and its rate controlled, by the diffusion of the reacting elements through a&apos; continuous matrix phase; i.e., through the alpha (metallic) phase of the subscale and alloy and through the cuprous oxide of the external scale. Copper is presumed to diffuse outward through the cuprous oxide layer to the external surface, where it reacts to form more cuprous oxide.3 Oxygen is delivered at the oxide-metal interface in the form of cuprous oxide, which may either react with the alloying element to deposit its oxide at the inner limit of the external scale or dissolve in the pure copper that remains at the surface of the metal after it has become depleted in its oxidiza-ble alloying elements. Both oxygen and the alloying element are pictured as diffusing through the metal, the oxygen inward and the alloying element outward. Where the two diffusion streams meet in sufficient concentration the oxide of the subscale is precipitated. If the oxygen pressure in the surrounding atmosphere is just below the pressure necessary to maintain cuprous oxide undecomposed, no cuprous oxide can be formed; some of the oxide of the alloying element may form upon the external surface, if its decomposition pressure is below that of cuprous oxide, and a normal sub-scale appears. This condition is achieved experimentally by enclosing the alloy with cuprous oxide together with an excess of copper. At temperatures from 600°C. downward, the precipitated oxides tend to accumulate at the grain boundaries of the alpha phase where a relatively small volume establishes a partial barrier to the diffusion of the reactants- Similarly, large volumes of Precipitated oxides tend to deposit in various patterns that may be expected to
