Ground support installation into the face of development headings has become an accepted practice at many Australian hard rock mines. Ground support is installed in the development face to reduce personnel exposure to rockfall while conducting work tasks such as marking up, installing lifter tubes, charging, and face sampling. The ground support system installed in the face is typically friction bolts and mesh. This support system can be effective at reducing rockfall occurrence, but it also increases the cost of development per metre, in terms of capital for the ground support, jumbo and operator capital allocation and the installation time slowing each drill and blast cycle. Other issues associated with meshing and bolting the development face include management of rock bolts and mesh sheets in the fired dirt of every cut, damage to services such as vent duct, geometry issues when installing ground support onto irregular development profiles and operator error. Fibrecrete installation onto the development face for support is an option considered by many mines, but it can be difficult to manage due to the removal of visual indications of misfires and slowing the mining cycle due to the wait time for fibrecrete curing. The use of Thin Spray Liner (TSL) products in underground hard rock mines has been relatively infrequent in the past, mainly due to issues with cost, health and safety, and liner strength. Kanmantoo Mine investigated the use of TSLs for the purpose of development face support, while collecting data on the costs and practicalities associated with their use. Several TSL products were trialled and a preferred TSL product was selected for use as face support. Cost savings, drill and blast cycle timing improvements and other benefits were achieved while meeting the requirement to reduce rockfall risk.

During fiscal years 1967-68, the Bureau of Mines produced 185 technical papers and reports about petroleum and oil-shale research, which were published either by the Bureau or by others as referable scientific literature. Numerous other reports were prepared for Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau. Research performed during the reporting period by the Bureau on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale was classified by 71 active projects. A basic appropriation of $3,575,000 was supplemented by $1,300,000 in fiscal year 1967, and that of $4,043,000 by $1,402,000 in fiscal year 1968, making the appropriated-to-supplemental fund ratios about 2.8 to 1 for fiscal year 1967 and 2.9 to 1 for fiscal year 1968. In fulfillment of the mission of the Bureau, through planned research programs, methods for producing and utilizing petroleum were improved. The continued conservation of this natural resource of petroleum, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, was pursued through research performed by some 350 personnel at two petroleum research centers and two petroleum research laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of the Bureau and the Department of the Interior.

In recent years, the amount of ferritic stainless steel production has increased. However, the rust formation by the salt spray test was pointed out in the past. At the centre of the circular rust zone, pitting corrosion where water-soluble nonmetallic inclusions were embedded was observed. These inclusions originated from the suspended refining slag and consisted of multi-phase oxides and sulphides. By the experiments and thermodynamic consideration of the water-solubility, not only CaO or CaS, but also lime rich calcium-aluminates or calcium-silicates have shown large water-solubility. The composition of oxide phase in the inclusions was almost the same among the samples from molten steel, slab, or cold rolled sheet. On the contrary, CaS was clearly observed around the oxide in the sample of cold rolled sheet, although it was not found in the molten steel or slab samples. The enrichment of sulphur occurred from the desulphurization reaction of the suspended slag particles in the molten steel and also occurred from the diffusion of sulphur to the oxide inclusions during the heating of the slab. The optimization of refining slag composition has lead to produce the ferritic stainless steel without rust formation. This evening I would like to speak about men for the mineral industry.It is trite to say that the mining industry is expanding rapidly and that technically trained men are in short supply. How short is difficult to assess and impossible to quantify.The industry has been traditionally managed by technically trained men experienced in the ways of their fellow men. Let us start with the assumption that men with this training and experience are essential to management of mining and metallurgical enterprises.I suggest that we do this as it avoids argument with those who are beginning to suggest that such men are not so important as they used to be; who are suggesting that the latest sophisticated business management schools can produce managers who can straight out of school join the upper echelons of an organization and successfully manage it by the use of modern systems and techniques without the need to rub shoulders with men of all callings and get their hands dirty in the process.This kind of thinking brings to mind the modern cargo ship which is equipped with all the latest gadgets of science. It can find its way from Sydney to Auckland with no one in the engine room and the man on the bridge spending most of his time writing to his wife or reading the latest novel.How often do we read of this ship being tied up in Sydney because the crew sympathizes with the cook who has been slighted by some uncomplimentary remark about his toheroa soup? Here is a pieceof sophisticated machinery stopped through no technical fault, but held up by the whim of man. The understanding of man by man can spell the success or failure of any endeavour. The adsorption process, density and structural property of the oleate layer adsorbed onto a hydroxyapatite (HAP) surface at six different concentrations and three pHs (pH 8, 9 and 10) have been studied using the technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The present study demonstrated the versatility and accuracy of the QCM-D for surface adsorption characterization. The real-time measurements of frequency and dissipation shifts with a hydroxyapatite-coated sensor revealed changes in the hydroxyapatite surface during the entire adsorption process. Chemisorption and surface precipitation of sodium oleate were also observed on the surface of hydroxyapatite through the use of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). Chemisorption dominated at low concentrations and high pH values and formed a rigid and thin adsorption layer. Surface precipitation of calcium oleate and micelles dominated at concentrations higher than critical micelle concentration (CMC) and lower pHs and formed a thick but dissipated adsorption layer with a high hydration level. Three distinct adsorption behaviors were identified from the different slopes of ?D-?f plots. The adsorption density was less than a monolayer at concentrations <0.164 mM, but increased significantly at concentrations higher than 0.821 mM at all three pHs. The critical concentration at pH 8 was 0.33 mM, which was lower than at pH 9 (0.821 mM) and pH 10 (3.3 mM).

FROM the results of his investigation of the hardenable copper-nickel-silicon and copper-cobalt-silicon alloys, M. G. Corson1 explained the dispersion-hardening effect by assuming the precipitation of the inter-metallic compounds nickel silicide and cobalt silicide, and on this basis he constructed diagrams for the pseudobinary systems copper-nickel silicide and copper-cobalt silicide. A consideration of these diagrams and of the factors that exert such an important influence upon the rate of precipitation, such as degree of supersaturation, nucleus number and rate of diffusion, leads to the expectation that the rate of precipitation of the silicides on reheating the quenched solid solutions at temperatures below the alpha-phase boundary should increase continuously as the reheating temperature is raised. The present investigation shows that while this rate does increase with the reheating temperature in a general way, it does not do so continuously. Supplements to Corson&apos;s diagrams are offered, showing the discontinuities, and slight modifications in the solubility curves are suggested.

Platinum group metals are extracted almost exclusively in South Africa from three very different zones in the Bushveld Igneous Complex, called the Plat, Merensky, and the UG-2 reefs. The Plat reef is currently being exploited only by Anglo American Platinum, whereas the Merensky reef is exploited by them, Impala Platinum, Northam, and Lonplats. The UG-2 reef, on the other hand, is also processed by these producers, but Kroondal and Barplats have operations that exclusively treat ore from this reef. At present the extraction of pgms from ores in South Africa follows the traditional route of upgrading to a concentrate in a minerals processing circuit, further upgrading to a matte in a smelter, and final upgrading and separation of the individual metals in a refinery. Thus all operations that extract pgms require a minerals processing circuit, the design and performance of which is a topic of much interest, as it is a poorly understood and not a very efficient process in relative terms, compared to the other processes. Recoveries across the minerals processing circuit of between 75 and 90% are the norm.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. This paper briefly describes the shaft, including sinking, steel sets and their installation, shaft equipment and winders.INTRODUCTIONThe New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. Service Shaft is a vertical concrete-lined circular shaft, 20 ft. in diameter with -steel sets spaced at 12-ft. centres. The diameter of 20 ft. was established as the minimum that would enable the shaft both to house the proposed hoisting and service equipment and to satisfy ventilation requirements as a downcast airway. The 12-ft. set spacing was based on South African practice in similar types of shafts.The shaft extends from the surface to 28 ft. below No. 22 Level, a total depth of 3,194 ft. Sinking was commenced in September 1946, and equipping completed in January 1955. Initially the shaft was sunk and concrete-lined to a depth of 52 ft., using a stiff-legged crane and clam-shell grab for mucking. Operations were suspended at this depth to allow the installation of the steel sinking head-frame, winders and ancillary equipment.Sinking and concreting were recommenced after four months and continued to a depth of 1,035 ft. 6 in., where the shaft connected with a pilot opening. The concrete lining was poured as sinking progressed and was piped from the surface to this depth, after which all concrete was lowered in buckets and discharged through a distributor suspended in the shaft. A cycle of stripping to the pilot opening and concreting was continued until the shaft reached No. 22 Level. From this level the remaining 28 ft. was sunk full size. All plats were cut and concreted as sinking progressed.

The Misima open pit gold mine is a 20Mt per annum operation. Blasthole drilling is used to sample all material at a uniform 5m square pattern, and representative sub- sampling of the blast holes enables assay samples to be collected over the full 10m bench height. Samples are assayed for gold, silver and copper at the Company&apos;s laboratory at the mine site and the assays are provided to geologists as a written assay report and on floppy disc. Surveyed blasthole locations and assay results are transferred via personal computers (PCs) to a SUN mini-computer where results are stored by bench, blasthole assays are kriged, and plot files are created. A geologist selects grade boundaries from the kriged data, adjusting the boundaries towards the raw blasthole data where hard boundaries are recognised. Surveyors peg the resultant boundaries in the pit using a system of colour-coded pegs to display the different material types. A daily plan also shows boundaries and face positions.

In this work the formation and environmental stabilization potential of arsenate-containing fluoroapatites is considered. In particular in this research various compounds were precipitated from synthetic solutions containing fluoride, arsenate/phosphate and calcium by varying different parameters-temperature, Ca:As ratio, pH, and P:As ratio, and aging time. The results obtained helped determine the operating window that should be used for the formation of highly crystalline fluoroapatites, in particular svabite (Ca5(AsO4)3F). It was found that svabite has a specific pH range of precipitation, with lower pH yielding CaF2 and calcium arsenate compounds such as CaHAsO4•H2O. At higher pH, a mixture of svabite and johnbaumite (Ca5(AsO4)3OH) precipitated, yielding a less stable material. This range of precipitation varied with the concentration of arsenic in the starting solution, and widened with higher initial concentrations of Ca2+, AsO4 3- and F-. Furthermore, svabite/fluoroapatite solid solutions were formed by using the same procedure as svabite but replacing some of the arsenate in solution by phosphate. The increase in phosphate content yielded a gradual change in morphology and crystallinity. Work on stability evaluation is currently under way.

Labour protection, that is prevention of occupational disease and reduction in the frequency of accident, has always been a matter of major concern of mining industry. Management and the government should promote and maintain high safety standards through some measures to reduce accident frequency and occupational disease. This can be achieved by using the science and technology for improving the working conditions, educating workers and managers about accidents and prevention techniques. The detailed analysis of an accident requires knowledge of many factors such as location, time, type, cost of accident, victim, nature of the injury, personal and environmental factors etc. that can be obtained from the standard coded accident report form. There is a need to prepare safety data in a common format to produce a common safety reporting system and ‘Occupational Health and Safety Management Tool’ is being designed to manage this by using database and Internet technology. Precautions should be taken according to results from database queries by providing comprehensive and accurate national data. To have an accident is unfortunate, however, to have an accident and learn nothing from it is unforgivable. Please allow me the temerity to reply to your reply to my contribution as follows: A fracture is brittle if plastic deformation is absent or, conversely a fracture is ductile if plastic deformation is present. Consequently, brittleness is specified by the degree of plastic deformation at fracture. This is the generally accepted definition. If other material properties (e.g. the quorient or the product of the uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths) under certain conditions are influenced by brittleness, or brittleness by them, these should not be called brittleness. If the one or the other author does that, he simply uses imprecise language. Even your remark, that ?Inyang and Pitt (1990) stated that the ratio of the compressive strength (sc/st) is directly proportional to brittleness?, confirms that the two quantities are not considered the same. For example:? The well known definition that a material is linear?elastic if the strain is directly proportional to the stress?does not mean that stress (measured in MPa) and strain (measured in %) are the same thing.

"Mine decommissioning is the final phase in a mining project. Planning for decommissioning must commence for a proposed mine even before the government approves it. Queensland mining approvals require proponents to commit to completion (or closure) criteria defining successful rehabilitation. Queensland mining project statutory environmental authorities must also specify how progressive rehabilitation is to occur throughout the mining project. Final landforms with graded banks together with creek and run-off diversions are often required and constructed early in the life of a mining project. At closure, mining projects must demonstrate that future medium-term risks are not significant, or failing this, a residual risk financial payment must be made to the state. CSIRO climate change projections indicate that Queensland is likely to become warmer this century with less rainfall in parts and with extreme rainfall events likely to occur more frequently. This project was undertaken to?determine: if current rehabilitation planning tools assist in determining the environmental risks from mining closure not adequately addressing climate change if these risks are addressed by current rehabilitation outcomes.The north-west Queensland mining region and the central Queensland coalfields were represented in this project by five study sites. Local data sets for temperature, rainfall and rainfall intensity were produced using conservative greenhouse gas emission scenarios representing likely future atmospheres, and using the SimCLIM climate model, Evaporation data sets were also derived from available climate parameters. These projected climate variables supported equations and models used in Queensland to determine mining project rehabilitation completion criteria. Storm intensities and return intervals were directly applied to assess the likelihood of failure of engineered structures such as stormwater diversions and banks. Plant cover change determined by an existing growth model together with rainfall intensity and changes in the R and C factors of the universal soil loss equation (USLE) erosion model enabled estimates of long-term erosion rates. Flood estimates were undertaken using regional rated catchments.The study found that stormwater diversions and banks on recontoured rehabilitated landforms, if constructed to currently accepted completion criteria, would likely fail within 30 years and with the likelihood of failure steadily increasing thereafter. The change in likelihood of failure was able to be estimated and could be applied to the determination of residual environmental risk for approval of a surrender application involving rehabilitation. The USLE model showed that long-term erosion rates increased as a consequence of climate change from north to south across the Queensland mining precincts. Because the growth model did not consider carbon dioxide fertilisation affects, results would likely be worse-case.Likely climate change outcomes have consequential residual environmental risks of mining project rehabilitation failure. This increased risk may result in increased payments to the state from mining projects where high consequences exist. Sin embargo, dado que la presa nueva Yauliyacu culminaría su función y que la presa auxiliar Tablachaca no contaba con la suficiente capacidad de almacenaje, Centromin Perú evalúo otras alternativas para la ubicación y construcción de una nueva. De acuerdo al estudio realizado, se encontró que la quebrada de Chinchan era la más adecuada puesto que ofrecía mayor capacidad de producción y se descartó las de Corina y Tablachaca. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las características de la quebrada, el diseño del depósito de Chinchan, su proceso de construcción, la limpieza de fundación, el análisis de la estabilidad física y química, la implementación para mejorar la estabilidad de la presa, la mejora de calidad del aire en la zona del depósito, el programa de inversiones y el plan de cierre del relave.

The risk of injury caused by minor roof falls continues to increase in underground mining. Most ground control injuries result from small rock falls that occur in a supported area, but do not involve the failure of the support system. In the roof, these are the "skin failures" that occur between previously installed primary or secondary bolting systems. To minimize skin failures and the associated accidents, several devices were designed and tested in the laboratory to maximize stiffness, minimize material thickness and weight, and ease material storage and handling on roof bolting machines. The goal of this project was to design and evaluate devices that can be installed with traditional primary or secondary roof supports, and that are easy to handle/install under temporary or previously supported roof.

"In refractory gold concentrates, gold is occluded in sulphide minerals preventing efficient cyanide leaching. Hence, roasting is used to oxidize sulphur and organic carbon, the latter being necessary to minimize recovery loss through the preg-robbing effect. In 2009, Outotec commissioned the circulating fluidized bed roaster at Syama gold mine in Mali. Since 2013 Resolute and Outotec have been implementing improvements to the roaster performance with the capacity increasing from 8000 t/month in 2013 to above 13,000 t/month in 2016, while achieving a residual sulphide sulphur and organic carbon contents of below 0.1 wt.% and 0.4 wt.%, respectively. Thus a gold recovery in the CIL of above 90% is attained. In 2016, Outotec audited the Syama roaster. The analysis resulted in the Low Carbon Roaster (LCR) upgrade concept which (i) allows re-processing of calcine dust from the spray cooler and ESP after pelletization and (ii) allows the roasting of a further fine-organic carbon rich feed, i.e. de-slime circuit tailings. The LCR upgrade aims to reduce organic carbon to <0.2 wt.% and increase roaster-leaching gold recovery by >3%. Project development included extensive testwork. The LCR process is expected to become operational during FY 2019.INTRODUCTION Double refractory sulphide ores exhibit the characteristics of gold locked within pyrite grains, in the presence of preg-robbing natural (organic) carbon. Hence, to achieve high recovery during subsequent processing steps, i.e. cyanide leaching, oxidation of sulphide sulphur is required, producing a porous calcine by way of a roasting step. This allows for the gold contained within the pyrite grains to be accessible during cyanide leaching. Furthermore, it is necessary to oxidize the organic carbon. Oxidizing the organic carbon is essential as gold recovery loss occurs as a result of gold-cyanide complexes being adsorbed on organic carbon, this phenomenon is termed as preg-robbing (Miller et al., 2016). The gold absorbed on the organic carbon is lost, reporting to the tailings stream. Hence, the aforementioned oxidation of sulphide sulphur and organic carbon is the process goal. Nonetheless, the latter must occur at a controlled temperature which is concentrate/ ore specific, since the pores of the produced calcine should not sinter, as this makes the gold contained in the calcine less accessible during leaching, leading to gold recovery loss. The tight temperature control requirement is a decisive factor in the choice of a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) as the roasting reactor, due to the excellent mixing characteristics of the CFB which results in temperature homogeneity of (+/-10°C). Roasting of double refractory ores, as described above, can be included in the flowsheet after comminution and grinding, a process termed as whole ore roasting, or by including a flotation circuit termed as concentrate roasting. Roasting the flotation concentrate results in less solid flow, increased sulphide sulphur grade and organic carbon content resulting in a higher heating value and higher gold content. A typical composition of the Syama ore and concentrate is given in Table 1. Ore average values presented correspond to the period 2015, while concentrate values are typical for the flotation performance throughout the period 2012–2015."

This information circular describes the application of modern methods and equipment in sinking a vertical, 916-foot-deep by 16-foot-diameter, concrete-lined access shaft for the Harold D. Roberts tunnel near Montezuma, Colo. Although the access shaft was merely a construction facility to expedite completion of a 23-mile water-diversion tunnel, a circular shaft of this type would be equally adaptable for mine development or other purposes. Comparable sinking methods and equipment could be used for similar shafts within a wide range of sizes and depths. SUMMARY In addition to excavation and support of the basic access shaft to tunnel grade, the overall sinking project involved initial preparation of a surface site and plant, subsequent construction of a tunnel-level station and loading pocket at the shaft bottom, and ultimate conversion of the basic shaft into a hoisting and access facility for tunnel operations. The sinking period for the basic shaft approximated one year. Actual tunnel operations through the converted shaft began on April 3, 1958, approximately 19 months after the project was initiated.

Energy consumption in domes tic copper production has increased nearly 60 percent in the last 10 years, reaching approximately 175 trillion Btu in 1973. Energy required to produce 1 pound of copper rose from nearly 41,000 Btu in 1963 to nearly 50,000 Btu in 1973. Production from lower grade ores and strict pollution control regulations have contributed to this increase. Each stage of copper production has been analyzed to determine total energy consumed, energy mix required, cost of the energy, and recent or proposed changes in operations which may affect the consumption of energy by the copper industry. Data have been gathered from a recent Bureau of Mines canvass of the industry, from visits to copper operations, and from conversations with copper industry officials.
