LKAB's ores have specific mineralogical properties that make them especially suitable for the production of super-grade concentrates. Conditions are particularly good for this purpose at Malmberget, where a concentrate for high-purity sponge iron production has been produced for many years. Until 1978 the approximate assay was 71.2 % Fe and 0.45 % SiO2. Since then the assays have been improved by process modifications to approximately 71.5 % Fe and 0.20 % SiO2. Scope exists for still further improvement. In recent years the production of fractioned concentrates has been started. The material lies within the size range 74-125 µm and the approximate chemical analysis is 71.6 % Fe and 0.30 % SiO2. Other special products are under discussion. The Malmberget ores are also suitable for the production of high-purity direct reduction pellets with a SiO2 content below 1 %.

The specific lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh coalbed, highly resistive limestone and sandstone units with relatively shallow overburden, prevent the use of any predictive method as developed for European conditions. This paper describes the development of a subsidence precalculation methodology suitable to the mining-geological conditions in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field. It has been found that due to lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh coalbed the subsidence coefficient varies within the area of the subsidence trough. This is different from the European conditions where the subsidence coefficient is considered to be a constant. The effects of lithology, in-the form of a variable subsidence coefficient, have been separated for each test site by introducing a correlation between hypothetically homogeneous overburden and existing lithological conditions, while providing for different mining conditions. Field data from eleven Bureau longwall panel studies were used in the regression analysis. For each panel the characteristics of the variability of the subsidence coefficient along individual profile lines were defined. Regression analysis of the subsidence coefficients from all test sites on the location relative to the edge of the panel has yielded a third degree polynomial equation with a coefficient of correlation of 0.9999. All sensitivity tests have shown good results.

This paper is intended to provide information for one to be able to determine the slurry system head curve for pump applications. The slurry characteristics are the basis for what the size, material of construction, and critical carrying velocity of the pipe will be. The system head curve is adjusted by use of the pipe friction coefficient factor and slurry derate factors. An example using multi-staging of slurry pump curves is presented to compare the wear life relationship of pump parts for a tailing pipeline system head curve.

A numerical model is being developed to assess the enhancement of permeability by improved fracture connectivity by micro-hydrofracturing. A generic two-dimensional percolation model has been developed to test the impact of various field conditions on permeability. Field data from Cyprus Minerals' Mineral Park Mine has been used to establish statistical properties of the observed fracture systems. Results of statistical anlyses of the field data and examples of the use of percolation model are presented.

Title IV of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) provides for an abandoned mine reclamation fund. This fund, taken from fees collected from operating coal mines, provides capital for the reclamation process. The Act directs the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) to collect the fees based on coal production. Monies from the abandoned mine lands (AML) fund are distributed through two programs. The first provides OSM with capital to use in emergency situations resulting from abandoned mine sites and reclaiming high priority sites in states without established AML programs. The second distributes the money through a state's AML program in the form of grants. To provide for a flexible and customized selection procedure for AML projects, a management information system (MIS) that combines scientific selection procedures is being developed. This system employs objective and subjective methods developed in systems research in recent years. The MIS component is an essential part of any selection process involving large numbers of potential projects. It must contain all the necessary project parameters that can be applied to the selection of projects whether or not they are to be used in the immediate selection criteria. In addition, variable selection criteria will allow ‘what if’ types of inquiries for comparison of differing selections and benefits.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Kennecott Copper Corp., and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology are cooperating on a research project to improve extraction of copper from previously leached waste dumps that are in part compacted and impervious to leach solutions. The field work is being done at the "J" leach dump, Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex. The laboratory percolation leaching tests were made at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center on drill core samples from the "J" dump to determine how much copper might be leached if permeability could be restored by explosive heaving or other means. The core samples from nine drill holes on "J" dump contained from 0.06 to 0.14 percent copper. Copper extractions ranging from 15 to 3 percent were obtained in 75 days by percolation leaching of minus-1-inch material with dilute sulfuric acid. The tests results indicate that about 2'7 percent of the copper remaining in the "J" dump could be extracted under ideal leaching conditions.

As market conditions become more competitive, U.S. coal producers are faced with the increasing need to find methods of lowering production costs in their operations. One area worthy of investigation is the additional recovery of fine coal that is normally discarded in the preparation plant waste stream. United Coal Company is currently assessing the capability of the Deister Flotaire, a new application of a column flotation cell, to recover additional, saleable coal from preparation plant waste. This paper presents the technical data obtained to date. Work with a 0.76 m (30 inch) diameter cell installed in a plant shows considerable coal recovery is possible from a nominal 0.595 run (28 mesh) X 0 refuse stream.

The free-milling ore characteristics of the Fort Knox gold deposit are ideal for studying gold and silver behaviors in various processing circuits without serious interference of sulfide minerals and other refractory factors. A galvanic effect leads to faster silver dissolution than gold dissolution and, as a result, the Au/Ag solution concentration ratio increases through the leach circuit. In the CIP circuit, Au adsorption is more effective than Ag adsorption. The Au/Ag solution concentration ratio decreases from 10.0 to 1.0 as the slurry advances from CIP tank #1 to CIP tank #5, while Au/Ag ratio in the carbon increases from 3.2 to 15.3, as the carbon advances from CIP tank #5 to CIP tank #1. Silver is stripped more effectively than gold from the loaded carbon. The Au/Ag ratio in solution reaches 2.0 in the first 75,700 L of strip solution that pass through the loaded carbon; as the stripping process continues, the Au/Ag ratio in the strip solution increases. In the electrowinning circuit, the Au/Ag ratio in the spent electrowinning solution is significantly lower than that in the electrowinning feed, indicating that Au is more rapidly deposited onto the cathode than Ag.

The increasing social interest for the environmental issues, forces the authorities to enact more rigorous regulations. The mining industry is one of the sectors that concentrate vigorous remonstrance. It is an absolutely justified reaction, as a result of the numerous contaminated and polluted sites that have been inherited by previous operations and they remain unremedied. The lack of a consolidated global legislation, transfers the burden of decisions to the national level. This paper consists of two parts. At the first part, it discusses the critical role of the state to form an effective environmental policy, feasible for the context of the national economy. Afterwards it analyses two of the main points, which must be considered by the regulator for the excavation activity, the abandoned sites and the duration of the mining investment. The aims are to defuse, in the short-term, the public pressure, protecting the economic growth and, at the same time, to form a basic structure for the development of the corporate social responsibility. The second part presents an alternative financial instrument for the Greek regulatory framework, conformed to the characteristics of the Greek Economy, and analyses the expected benefits both for the business and the social welfare.

Nearly 17 years ago a major producer of synthetic zeolites started an extensive exploration program for natural zeolite deposits which resulted in the discovery of over 170 occurrences in the western United States. A few years later several of the other producers and consumers of synthetic zeolites also started similar exploration programs. Since then, small quantities of natural zeolite minerals have been produced from at least 12 deposits in the United States. Of these the Bowie deposit, about 13 miles north of Bowie, Arizona, is the most important,having produced over 5,000 tons of vitric tuff zeolitically altered to the mineral chabazite and minor amounts of the minerals erionite and clinoptilolite. Mining Districts and Mineral Deposits of Arizona compiled by Charles A. Mardirosian, Consulting Geologist, estimates the value of the total production from the Bowie deposit at a very conservative $2,000,000. Unfortunately, none of the companies responsible for the discovery and the initial production of natural zeolites made any effort to develop the high volume, low cost applications of this unique mineral raw material. Instead, they developed only the high unit value uses to supplement their existing synthetic molecular sieve product lines. With the producers of synthetic zeolites thinking in pounds and not in tons, further development of natural zeolite deposits stagnated for over a decade.

Operators of coal preparation plants use equipment such as large-capacity dump trucks and bulldozers to haul, spread and compact refuse material to conform to federal and state regulations governing the disposal of solid waste. For example, federal regulations require that refuse be spread and compacted in layers not more than two feet thick. If the refuse layers or piles have poor load-bearing characteristics, movement of equipment over them becomes extremely difficult. The increasing cost and limited space for the construction of settling ponds extensively used for fine refuse disposal are leading to the growing practice of dewatering the fine refuse by means of vacuum disc filters and combining the resulting filter cake with coarse refuse for waste bank disposal. However, this filter cake usually contains more than 25% moisture. Therefore, when it is combined with coarse refuse, the moisture level of the total refuse may become high enough to impair the load-bearing strength of the refuse. Precisely this problem and the attendant difficulties of moving heavy equipment arose when vacuum disc filters were installed at a preparation plant in West Virginia. Combining the moist filter cake with the coarse refuse generally results in a 12% moisture level for the total refuse at this plant. At this moisture level, the refuse can still be handled with some difficulty by the equipment. However, the problem has frequently been compouned after rains.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sample type in a geo-chemical exploration program. Regulations on sulfur emissions have caused the electric utilities to evaluate various methods of meeting them. Low-sulfur, low-volatile coals can be burned alone or blended with high-volatile? coals. This option may be a cost-effective alternative to the installation of scrubbers on coal-fired combustion systems. In some blending applications, problems may be encountered because the low sulfur content and high calorific value of the low-volatile or other clean coal allow it to economically upgrade extremely poor quality coal. While this is done to meet specification purposes, actual boiler performance may be dominated by the poorer quality coal. Thus, the reputation of the low-volatile or other clean coal suffers. As a result of laboratory and full scale testing, conducted over the last five years, a model has been developed to evaluate the relative combustion characteristics of various coals and coal blends. A database for different coals has been gathered. This paper presents the model and shows how power plants and coal mine personnel can use it to evaluate their coals from different sources. It can be used to blend two or more coals from different sources so that thee blended coal has flame stability characteristics which are similar to those of the baseline coal.

This paper presents the results of test work performed with a Pacific Electric Motors (PEM) high intensity magnetic separator (20 kilogauss) , a unit capable of separating weakly, as well as strongly, magnetic minerals in the particle size range of sands to clays. Tests were performed on some 40 industrial minerals. With some minerals excellent separations were attained and with others intermediate and poor separations were accomplished. This study is a preliminary survey and many of the intermediate and poor results can be improved as separation problems are worked out with additional test work. It is demonstrated that with a number of industrial minerals high intensity magnetic separation is a viable beneficiation technique that is economic ally feasible.

Thoron daughter WL&apos;s measured by alpha-spectroscopy and the Kusnetz method are about one-half those of radon daughter WL&apos;s in a uranium mine in Canada.1 A diffusion model can account for the relative concentrations.l Since the Kusnetz technique is most widely used for measuring radon daughter WL&apos;s in uranium mines, a general procedure is derived to extend this method to measurement of WL&apos;s of radon and thoron daughters in air containing their mixtures. Coté P. and Townsend M.G., 1981. A procedure is also suggested for counting radon and thoron daughters by 3-channel [a]-spectroscopy. Errors in WL(Rn) are calculated for standard radon daughter counting procedures when a-decay of both thoron and radon daughters is attributed to radon daughters alone. Providing overall counting times are short, [<]30 min, these errors are generally small. The precision of ß -counting methods is also investigated. A portable 3-channel alpha spectrometer for measurement of radon and thoron daughters in uranium mines or homes is described, Carson D.W., 1979. The computer programs for analyzing the data to give, depending on the mode employed, some or all of the concentrations RaA, RaB, RaC, ThB, ThC and WL of radon and thoron daughters by alpha spectrometric, modified Kusnetz, Rolle and Tsivolglov methods are presented.(l) A commercial apparatus, based on the above prototype, incorporating a microprocessor and built under contract to EMR is now available.(2) A number of personal radiation dosimeters for miners are now being tested in mines. One of these is the CEA dosimeter which uses the track-etch film method, Duport P., Chapuis A.M. and Pradel J., 1979. An apparatus for rapid reading of track-etch films by the spark technique has been described previously, Cross W.G. and Thomasino L., 1970 and Huang V.F., 1975. We have developed such an apparatus for rapid semi-automatic reading of films exposed to radiation from mixtures of radon and thoron daughters in CEA dosimeters. The films used, Kodak LR 115 Type II Strippable, may be stripped rapidly and easily, for counting after irradiation and developing, by use of a special punch and suction technique. The method promises to provide an inexpensive and rapid technique for reading large quantities of personal dosimeter films. However, the present CEA dosimeter has faults in design, leading to a contamination problem. Those films that show contamination cannot be read by automatic means. A commercial apparatus based on the above prototype spark counter and built under contract to EMR is now available.3 1. These computer programs are available on request. 2. Bench-scale selective-flocculation tests were conducted on samples of Florida phosphate and Western phosphate process tailings to recover upgraded phosphate concentrates. After physical and mineralogical characterization, the slurry samples were treated with a broad suite of flocculants with a range of molecular weights and anionic functional groups. Parameters investigated included pH, dispersant and flocculant types, and dose; conditioning parameters and settling times were, for the most part, held constant. Where selectivity was achieved, phosphate minerals remained dispersed, whereas silicate minerals flocculated and settled. Single-stage tests using reagents with low to medium anionic characteristics produced upgraded phosphate concentrates at moderately elevated pH. Two- stage site-blocking tests, in which low-molecular-weight flocculants were used as site-blocking agents, gave improved results.

Kerr-McGee has operated the Ambrosia Lake uranium mill since startup in 1958. Tonnage milled per day has varied from 3500-7000 tons. The mill capacity is currently rated at 7000 tons per day. The process consists of two parallel circuits following crushing and sampling, \\lhich include open circuit rod mill grinding, sulfuric acid leach, cyclone classification, and counter-current washing circuits of sand classifiers and slime thickeners. Pregnant solution is clarified and polished by precoat pressure leaf filters prior to amine solvent extraction. Yellowcake is precipitated from the pregnant strip solution with ammonia, filtered and dried.

Since the turn of the century there has been a marked increase in population, industrial and economic growth, and in energy requirements in the United States. During this time our energy needs have been met largely by natural gas and petroleum, but as our reserves of these materials are depleted, we are going to depend more and more on our large reserves of coal. The mining of coal for electrical power production has increased at a rapid rate during the past decade. Over half the coal produced in the United States in 1971 came from mines utilizing surface mining operations (Paone, et al, 1974). Surface mining is expected to increase as the rising cost of oil places more demand on coal for energy. About 57 percent of the coal reserves in the United States lie in the area west of the 100th meridian. About one-quarter of this can be mined by current surface methods. This would involve the disturbance of approximately 1.5 million acres (600,000 hectares). By the year 2000, projections indicate disturbance of about 200,000 acres, or 300 square miles, in the West. Mined areas receiving more than 250 mm of annual precipitation can usually be revegetated without irrigation if the spoils are properly shaped, the surface layer consists of suitable plant growth media, and proven techniques in rehabilitating disturbed rangeland are applied. Areas receiving less than 250 mm of annual rainfall or with high evapotranspiration rates pose a more difficult problem. Revegetation of these areas can probably be accomplished only with major inputs of water and good management (National Academy of Science, 1974).

Sedimentation is used to clarify process effluents or to thicken process slurries. The sedimentation cycle of a suspension is presented as a settling curve. This curve is simply a plot of the height of the interface between the settled suspension and clear liquor versus time. Figure 1 shows a series of graduate cylinders which contain a suspension at various stages in its settling cycle. Cylinder 1 shows the suspension completely mixed at time zero. After a brief period of time (see cylinder 2), the suspension is observed to settle from its initial height Ho to height H1, leaving behind a volume of clear (or turbid) liquor, called the supernatant. The interface between the supernatant and suspension is termed the mud line. It is also possible to distinguish at the bottom of the cylinder a layer of sludge representing solids which have settled from the suspension. The interface between it and the suspension is called the sludge line. The sludge line moves upward in the cylinder.

The financial implications of environmental liabilities are becoming staggering, particularly for mining companies. The Environmental Protection Agency&apos;s (EPA) Record of Decision (ROD) list for Superfund mining sites has some pretty hefty financial commitments, such as the $10 million operable unit remedy for the Yak Tunnel at California Gulch (in Colorado) or the $40 to 60 million remediation at Bunker Hill (in Idaho). These costs are driven by the large volume and areal extent associated with historical waste management practices at mining sites. (It&apos;s difficult to have a low-cost remedy for a 20-square-mile site.) Unfortunately, there are other ways of generating environmental liabilities besides Superfund, such as non-compliance with Clean Air Act provisions, stormwater permits, or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. In the last 2 years, EPA has increased enforcement in its regulatory programs, which has resulted in increased fines and criminal actions. Leaders in other industries (primarily the chemical and manufacturing industries) are viewing environmental liabilities as a strong motivator to select engineering approaches carefully based on technical, legal, economic, and philosophical perspectives. Industry interest in waste minimization programs comes from the concept that it is economically advantageous not to create waste in the first place. Waste minimization programs typically balance increased front-end capital investment with the minimization of potential long-term environmental liabilities as a way to achieve the lowest total-or life-cycle-cost. A side benefit of waste minimization programs is that they tend to improve overall regulatory compliance. Waste management practices are also becoming philosophical, as evidenced by a May 11, 1992, Business Week article: Companies that incorporate innovative thinking on sustainable development will do more than clean up or prevent their own pollution. They&apos;ll make and distribute a product more efficiently than ever, worry about its lifelong environmental impact, plan for recycling, and get their suppliers on the bandwagon. This type of approach will require a new mind-set, new tools, and adjustments throughout the organization. A key aspect of waste minimization or life-cycle waste management programs is the incorporation of environmental costs into economic analyses that compare various waste management alternatives. However, the incorporation of environmental costs into an economic analysis can be more difficult than initially thought. As noted above, new tools-or even a new toolbag-are needed, such as new accounting methods that track and assign the true lifetime environmental costs of a particular product. One piece of the new toolbag is life-cycle cost analysis, which is discussed in this paper. To simplify the discussion, this paper looks at the total costs associated with a given mining site. The concepts presented in this paper, however, can be applied to any mine waste management decision. The ultimate extension of life-cycle costing, as presented in the Business Week article, is to include the potential environmental costs throughout the life of a metal. At this point, I am perplexed on why, let alone how, to include the potential downstream environmental costs (i.e., the costs associated with smelting, manufacturing, use, and recycle or disposal) throughout the life cycle of mined copper, lead, or zinc.
