The MBS Solvent Extraction System utilises a unique design of mixer- settler having very high capacity per unit area and great flexibility. The development of the mixer-settler is traced through its various stages wherein the independence of mixing and pumping, reduction in settler area requirements and simplicity of plant layout were achieved. The laboratory, pilot plant and full scale tests contributing to the development of the machine are described. The existing KREBS SX plants in Europe and Africa are described as well as the plants presently under design. Results of recent testwork are also given.

"INTRODUCTION Drill and blast (DnB) represents the most important, and sometimes the most costly processes in a mine.. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum B. O. and Temeng V. A. 2015). The use of available information to improve the DnB processes can be the difference between a highly expensive process and an optimized one. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets and key information from a wide variety of different systems. This information is normally used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during, and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration, and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety, and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the DnB process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting this data across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated, and sustainable processes for handling the information. In many cases the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Barbara H. Wixom, Hugh J. Watson, 2007). Our initial implementation plan for the DnB solution included using data stored at the sites; however we learned early on in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed. The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing Drill&Blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This paper is targeted at users that want to better manage their DnB data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information. This case study will discuss the process of implementing a DnB workflow at multiple sites within Freeport McMoRan Inc (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available using the EDW. The paper will begin with an overview of the project. The discussion will then describe how DnB processes were used to set up daily workflows in order to provide information for evaluating process and making decisions. The final section will discuss some of the technical challenges and how they were solved, as well as possible next steps for further improving the workflow."

Abstract. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (PL-95-87), Section 522, establishes requirements for state regulatory authorities to designate lands unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining. Any party having an interest in an area that may be affected can petition for it to be designated unsuitable for mining. Section 522 could present major obstacles to the mining industry by typing up an area in an endless round of petitions. The program under development for Kentucky is examined and analyzed as an example for determining the hidden impacts of Section 522.

This paper provides an utierstanding of the betivior and potenttil damage of homes resulting from sag-type mine subsidence. This is done with extemive research of numerom case histories in Illinois collected by the authors. The howe response to substience-itiuced ground displacements are summarized and evaluuted. A damage level criteriu, specifically developed for residenttil structures, is presented based primarily on repair costs. Damage levels and the associated subsidence profile characteristics for each case history are compared.

Abstract. Dynamic experiments were performed in a continuous open-circuit 40x40 cm ball mill using a pseudo-random binary sequence of the feed rate and measuring the variations of the discharge particle-size distribution. The impulse response is calculated by a cross-correlation technique. Then a model involving a discrete transfer function and a time-series stochastic equation is calibrated using maximum likelihood methods. Based on this empirical model. a minimum variance controller with constrained input is designed and its performances are compared. by simulation, to the performances of a conventional PID regulator.

An MPSI KW-20 Tower mill has been tested at the Butte Molybdenum plant of Anaconda Minerals Company, as a substitute for the conventional 1.5x3.0 m (5x10 ft) tumbling ball mill currently used for regrind purposes. The Tower mill was operated in both open and closed continuous circuits. These results were complemented with a series of batch grinding tests to determine some of the operational features of this mill. The relative grinding efficiency of the Tower mill with respect to the tumbling ball mill was determined and the applicability of this new mill to a plant/heavy duty environment was assessed. Experimental results obtained on the regrind of moly concentrates indicate that approximately 40% energy savings can be realized by using the Tower mill instead of the ball mill.

During 1980-2000, the Florida Phosphate industry will deplete its Central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the ?so-called? Southern Florida Reserve areas. These new mines will require new mining, beneficiation and tailings disposal technologies in that the southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the Central Florida deposits furthermore, government regulations will necessitate the development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. This paper reviews these challenges for the phosphate industry and how these opportunities can be expected to effect plant design and plant operating practices.

"This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations and permeability changes on shale gas well integrity and safety under shallow cover. NIOSH researchers selected a study site over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under 482 feet of cover. One in-place inclinometer well and three permeability monitoring wells were drilled and installed over a 125-ft by 275-ft centers abutment pillar. In addition to the inclinometer well and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the first 1,500-ft-wide longwall panel on the south side of the abutment pillar mined by the site.A number of FLAC3D finite difference simulations (Itasca Consulting, 2017) were conducted to estimate surface subsidence, coal pillar pressure increases, and horizontal displacements in the in-place inclinometer (IPI) monitoring well. Comparisons of the FLAC3D finite difference simulation results and the surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation results show that the measured IPI casing deformations are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the FLAC3D models, and that the measured surface subsidence and underground pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models. Measured permeability changes were incorporated into a preliminary calculation to evaluate the effect of a hypothetical shale gas well leak on longwall ventilation. Results from this 2018 research clearly indicate that under shallow cover, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are at least one order of magnitude higher than those measured in a 2017 study under deep cover and slightly higher than those measured in a 2014 study under medium cover. This research represents a very important step and initiative in utilizing the knowledge and science obtained from mining research to improve miner and public safety as well as the safety and health of the workers in the oil and gas industries"

There has been a long history of ironmaking on the North East coast of England centered around the River Tees. The industry developed here because of the availability of good coking coals to the North in Co. Durham, and the discovery in 1851 of ironstone in the nearby Cleveland Hills, South of the .River. Cleveland ironstone is relatively poor in quality, with an iron content not exceeding h% and high proportion of sulphur and phosphorous. The iron exists in chemical association with alumina and silica, and physical beneficiation processes involve a serious loss in iron unless the upgrading is limited, when the economics of the process become doubtful. Over the years, richer foreign ores have replaced the local ironstone, and the last operating mine was closed in 1964.

Spectroscopic techniques are becoming increasingly popular for characterizing the interior of adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers at solid- liquid interface as well as in the identification of com- pounds on mineral surfaces. This review encompasses the application of fluorescence and ESR spectroscopic techniques to reveal the microscopic environment of the adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers on minerals with a special reference to the adsorption of anionic surfactants (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate) and polyelectrolytes (e.g., polyacrylic acid) at positively charged mineral (e.g., alumina) - water interfaces. Finally, the utility of XPS and auger techniques to identify the surface elemental composition of different mineral species has been related to their flotation efficiency.

As part of a larger study to identify factors influencing the practical operating life of wire rope used on large draglines in surface coal mining, field trips to operating surface coal mines were made during late 1975. Wire rope performance information was obtained from personnel at thirteen mine sites west of the Appalachians. Seventeen pieces of equipment, utilizing buckets ranging from 30-to 220-cubic-yard capacity, were documented. We have judged that U.S. surface coal mining draglines, 30 yards and larger, can be represented as 120 machines having 60-cubic-yard buckets, moving 1.8 x 10 yards of overburden during 6,650 hours of productive availability per year. Based on our limited field study, we have calculated that downtime resulting from rope-related causes averages 105.6 hours per year for each (typical 60-yard) dragline. The total lost production from this source alone is thereby estimated at about 25 x 10 yards annually. Although study findings did not reveal anything about dragline rope life that wasn't known or practiced by one operator or another, most operators could expect improved rope life by periodic review of their practices and by adopting or adapting one or more life-improvement measures employed at other sites. Since rope productivity was found to vary by about five to one, among the sites studied, we believe considerably improved average performance is possible. As little as ten percent overall improvement would mean increased national productivity exceeding two million yards of solid overburden removal, and associated savings in rope costs alone of some two million dollars annually, not to mention any reduction of labor-related expenses. This report outlines preliminary findings which may prove useful to many operators in extending wire rope life, thereby lowering expenses and increasing surface coal mining productivity. The generation and transportation of the airborne dust are mainly governed by the velocity and the movement pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face. Generally speaking, the higher the air velocity, the more the airborne dust will be generated and the longer the period of the dust of certain size will be carried away from the source. In order to effectively prevent the production and the spread of the airborne dust, The airborne dust concentration distribution in the longwall face must be known in advance. Before the dust concentration distribution can he predicted theoretically with confidence, the air velocity distribution pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face area must be determined first. However, the complicated, time-dependent and unpredictable mining conditions along and around the face area make the theoretical studies of the problem rather difficult. For instance, one of the factors commonly affecting the air velocity distribution at the longwall face is the air leakage, either into or from the gob area. The leakage quantity and the location of occurrence differ from mine to mine, face to face, and time to time. They depend not only on the compactness of the caved roof fragments in the gob, but also on the degree of obstructions in the working space and in the return entry. Another obstacle to the theoretical studies about the velocity distrbution is the complicated boundary conditions of the ventilated spnce which is very difficult to represent accurately in mathematical forms. In this paper, the air velocity distributions measured in four longwall faces are presented. A statistical model for each longwall face is also derived for prediction of air velocity distribution in the longwall face.

Radian Corporation (Radian) has developed a process for treating Cr(V1)-contaminated soils that involves: 1) soil washing using an alkaline extractant, 2) biological reduction of Cr(V1) to Cr(II1) in the soil wash effluent, and 3) separation of Cr(II1) from the biologically treated effluent. Biological treatment has been demonstrated for immobilized cells in fluidized bed bioreactors and suspended cells in slurry bioreactors for Cr(V1) levels ranging from 30 to 600 mg/L which have been reduced to non-detectable levels (< 0.05 mg/L; method detection limit [MDL]) during hydraulic residence times as short as 12 hours. The resulting Cr(II1)-containing effluent stream was chemically treated to precipitate chromium hydroxide for removal by physical separation.

This work forms part of a study being conducted into the feasibility of constructing a prototype Load Haul Dump (LHD) vehicle for operation in underground Canadian mines. A series of in-laboratory assessments were performed to determine the relative contributions of a Deutz F4L912W (54 HP- conventional vehicle engine) and a Deutz F2L 2011 (31 HP hybrid vehicle engine) to diesel emissions concentration during mine transient duty cycles and steady-state operating modes respectively. Results indicate significant reductions in the quantity of gaseous and particulate emissions with the application of the hybrid system and a high-efficiency ceramic element filter. This paper describes the engine test protocols and the results of this laboratory study.

Fluid energy grinding, or jet pulverization, refers to the process of entraining solid particles in high velocity gaseous or vaporous streams and reducing their size by impact and attrition against other particles or some sort of target. Since all desired size reduction is not achieved in one pass through the zone where energy is applied, some form of classification is necessary to return oversize particles to the grinding zone for further size reduction. Applications Fluid energy mills have normally been used to produce products where the particle size is basically finer than 325 mesh. Products having particle size distributions with a maximum size of 4 or 5 µm, and with a high percentage finer than I µm, can be produced using fluid energy mills. More recently, some fluid energy grinding units have been applied economically to produce ground products with 1 or 2% coarser than 200 mesh. It is also possible to consider usage of a jet-pulverizing zone, without the usual integrated air classi¬fier, operated either in open circuit or in conjunction with a screen. Feed sizes to be delivered to the fluid energy mill depend on the material involved, the type of jet pulverizer used, the finished product size requirement, and the upstream process. In some units feed sizes up to l in. or larger can be accepted, but practical economics usually require the starting material to be -4 mesh or smaller and some pulverizers are typically fed at 20 mesh top size. It is not unusual to find feed materials at essentially -325 mesh when extremely fine products are needed, since capacities are improved with finer feeds. Conventionally the fluid energy grinding process has been used for relatively soft and nonabrasive materials. This includes very low¬melting-point and temperature-sensitive materials or coatings, since there is no measurable temperature rise during fluid energy milling. More recently, however, jet pulverizers are being used on highly abra¬sive materials such as silica, feldspar, glass, zircon, calcined alumina, coke, boron carbide, and similar materials. Since the primary energy application is by impact of particles against themselves, there is a low rate of wear resulting in a small amount of product contamination and in low maintenance costs. Usually the fluid energy pulverizer produces a more narrow particle size distribution than other mills provide, and this is useful where such a requirement exists. It is possible, within limits, to adjust classifi¬cation and other functions of the overall fluid energy system to vary the particle size distribution curve and thereby approach the broader distribution obtained from other grinding methods. By controlling the temperature, composition, and humidity of the fluid used, it is possible to incorporate other functions with the size-reduction process. These include drying or adding moisture, coating, mixing and blend¬ing, and even oxidation or reduction and other chemical reactions or their inhibition. The finished product is discharged in the fluid stream and is conveyed pneumatically to the desired point, where a suitable dust collector must be provided. Operation and Mechanical Features One of the earliest fluid energy mills is the Micronizer now manu¬factured by the Sturtevant Mill Co. Similar units are also manufac¬tured by Jet Pulverizer Co. and others. As shown in Fig. 81, the micronizer consists of a shallow circular grinding chamber with noz¬zles arranged at the outer periphery to discharge tangentially inward. Fluid (usually compressed air or superheated steam) is provided to the nozzles from a manifold at pressures normally in the range of 100-150 psig and at temperatures up to 800°F or higher, depending on the raw material, required results, and economic factors. The hydrochemical method, which is based on the separation of aluminium oxide and silicon oxide by the hydrothermal decomposition of aluminosilicates by alkaline solutions in the presence of calcium oxide, can be effectively used for the complex processing of high-silicon aluminium ores. In this case, the silica is bound to a slightly soluble compound: Na20.2Ca0.2Si02•H20 (under the conditions: [&k]= 9, CaO/SiO2 = 1.05, alkali concentration in the solution: over 300 g/l Na20, T = 240...300 °C). If alkaline solutions of 100...150 g/l Na20 concentration are used, Ca0•SiO2•H20 or 2Ca0•Si02.0.5H20 compounds, depending on calcium oxide dosage, are formed at 280...320 °C. New methods for the crystallization of Na20.Al203.2.5H2O from concentrated alkaline solutions rand low-concentration solutions are proposed to isolate aluminium from solutions. The hydrochemical method, which involves no sintering process allows one to decrease the expenditure of heat by a factor of two, to reduce the investment and to exclude the pollution of the ambient air by dust-laden gases. "Subsea tunnel needs to be built over 50km long to connect between nations and continents. However there are only 19 tunnels longer than 5km in Korea, and there is no history of constructing and operating a tunnel longer than 50km. As the concept of a subsea tunnel, which withstands high water pressure and has an extremely long length is completely different from that of a land tunnel, all kinds of the latest technologies for tunnel construction are required such as survey and analysis of geology, design and construction under high water pressure, ventilation and prevention of disasters within an ultra long tunnel. Therefore, this paper describes the determination of tunnel cross-section under a high speed railway, structural stability, ventilation and fire safety under construction and operation, etc. through the virtual project for the length of 108km subsea tunnel under high water pressure of maximum 20bars from Honam to Jeju island in Korea. 1. INTRODUCTION The Honam-Jeju virtual project is subsea tunnel project to link from Honam(land) to Jeju(island) extending the currently operating Honam high speed railway line, and the same express train(t=18, design speed 350km/h, total train length 200m) operating at Honam line is applied in this project. As Honam-Jeju site is approximately 80km in straight distance with 160m maximum depth, subsea tunnel project should determine the various issues such as air quality/ventilation, aerodynamics, temperature, drainage, fire & life safety, structural stability. Figure 1. is the plan of subsea tunnel, with be constructed using Shield TBM. This double tube-Single track is composed of cross passages (every 350m in general section and 40m in emergency station), service tunnel, pressure relief ducts (every 250m), cross-over tunnels, shafts and emergency stations. 2. ALIGNMENT AND SITE CONDITON This project is planned as an ultra long tunnel of total length more than 105km via existing islands between Honam and Jeju island because straight alignment requires an artificial island which has high cost and construction risk, by deep water depth, though this is the shortest distance (see Fig 2). Water depth and topography in project site is divided into two blocks by Chuja Island. In first block to Chuja Island, depth of the water is 40m on average and maximum 60m, which indicates gradual change of water depth relatively. Also, outcrop bedrock is widely distributed near island."

Concealed thermal events in longwall gobs present safety hazards for underground coal miners and can significantly interrupt mining production. The probable causes for such thermal events range from coal oxidation at slightly above ambient temperature to smoldering fires due to spontaneous combustion of the broken coal left in the gobs. Locating such “hot spots” is the key step for planning and implementing mitigation measures to bring such thermal events under control. If a mine section, or even an entire mine, has to be sealed, understanding the status of the sealed mine atmosphere is important for the decisions guiding subsequent actions. The gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system is firsthand information of great value. Fire ratios proposed by various researchers and derived from gas composition data are useful in determining the fire status and even approximating the source locations (Timko and Derick, 2006). However, the applicability of each of these ratios under particular conditions should be carefully evaluated. The use of properly combined fire ratios can enhance the certainty of analysis. The explosibility of a sealed mine atmosphere deserves primary concern for safety reasons during seal construction, idle time and reopening of the sealed area.Mine atmospheric monitoring data from a longwall mine with flame fire have been analyzed. Efforts have been made to identify the possible causes, locations and statuses of these events using the obtained gas data, as well as other ventilation, geological and mining parameters. The effect of injected inert gas to control the events has also been quantified. The explosibility of the sealed atmosphere has been determined using two methods.

This chapter is concerned with the construction of the dynamic component of belt haulage systems. The dynamic system includes the belt line and tailpiece extension and retraction movements in a production system where mine management is continually placing the belt in the most effective operating position. Correct installation of the belt and tailpiece during an extension is very important for many performance reasons. Two of the most important reasons are to eliminate spillage and safely operate the belt line. This chapter is divided into three major discussions. The first discussion looks at analyzing the parameters of effective belt line construction. This includes a review of the parameters and management tools needed for proper scheduling of a move-up. The second major discussion topic centers on efficient procedures for a belt line extension. Topics such as site preparation, tailpiece breakdown and setup, stringing the belt line and structure, plus operating and maintenance tasks needed after the belt line is installed and running, are covered. The third discussion presents a list of conveyor and conveyor component manufacturers who provide services and products to the coal mining industry. Again, any discussion on underground haulage systems must generalize much of the site specific design approaches to be practical. This text will mention, where applicable, some of the alternatives available to construction engineers in designing belt line systems.

The ever-increasing power (and decreasing cost) of computers has opened up substantial oppor¬tunities for &apos;Vision&apos;-based systems in both on-line and off-line control. This paper reviews image analysis applications in use at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) for: •blast and mill feed size monitoring; •AG/SAG mill model-based control; •mineral liberation; and •froth flotation control. The SPLIT™ image analysis system is being used to estimate muck pile and ROM feed sizings. AG/SAG mill feed sizing is being used in a dynamic model for mill control. A new generation mineral liberation analyzer has been developed with Philips Electron Optics. The Philips-JKMRC mineral liberation analyzer offers a substantial improvement in resolution and speed over previous developments. While on-line liberation control continues to be something of a pipe dream, measuring liberation "one shift behind" is now feasible. A robust instrument has been developed to measure flotation froth bubble size and velocity. The instrument also derives a parameter that allows different froth textures to be distinguished. The instrument has been used for on-line control in coal and sulfide flotation. For coal froth, an online ash estimate has been achieved at one site and is being tested at other sites. Overall, image analysis is finding many applications in mineral processing and control.
