Longwall mining is a commonly used method of coal extraction that involves the complete removal of large, rectangular panels of coal. Longwall mining causes the immediate seam roof to break and fall into the void created by mining. The convergence of the surrounding strata towards the mining void causes subsidence on the surface. The subsidence magnitude is related not only to the mining depth, the topography, the geological features and the overburden materials, but also to the sequence of the strata overlying a coal seam. In additional to the vertical subsidence which is evident at the surface, there are also horizontal movements inwards toward the centre of the void, which cause the surface to tilt, bend, stretch and com-press. This paper presents a parametric investigation of the influence of the overburden stratigraphy to surface deformations due to longwall mining using 2D finite element models. Models simulate rock movement by applying equivalent edge load to the open roof.

INTRODUCTION Continuous mining machines are used in regular flat ore beds having uniform thickness. Since coal is the most common type of material occurring in such beds, most continuous miners are used for the extraction of coal from underground mines. The first continuous mining machine for under¬ground coal mining was introduced in 1948. In one machine, the continuous miner combines the functions performed by a conventional face drill, a cutting ma¬chine, and a loading machine. It breaks or digs the material out of the surrounding solid and transfers the material back through the machine chassis by means of a chain conveyor. The conveyor carries the material to a haulage system, usually a rubber-tired vehicle known as a shuttle car. Generally, continuous miners are used in seam heights from 890 to 3660 mm (35 to 144 in.). For seam heights of 1070 mm (42 in.) or less, the haulage system may be a multiple-bridge conveyor or battery-powered tractors that haul low-bed trailers. Proj¬ects are being undertaken by private industry and through government contracts to develop a continuous haulage system for all seam heights. As of 1976, the majority of continuous miners were of two types. The first type is the drum miner, which mounts the cutting elements on a series of drums across the cutting head of the machine, sometimes using a cutting chain to cut clearance for the gear drive. In the drum-type machines, the cutting head rotates parallel to the material face. The second type is the auger miner, which utilizes cutting elements mounted on two auger-type cutting heads. One head is located on each side of the machine, with the heads mounted per¬pendicular to the material face. Chain-head ripper-type miners/miners having rotary cutting elements with oscillating motion and twin-head boring-type miners have all been popular within the last 15 years. Although these are considered obsolete, some machines are still being supplied for specialized applications. GENERAL DESCRIPTION This chapter describes only continuous mining ma¬chines available as manufacturers' production models as of September 1976. Figs. 1 through 11 illustrate some typical machines currently in use. Cutting Elements The cutting elements are the interface between the machine and the material being mined. In describing the cutting elements, consideration must be given to the differences between the drum- and auger-type machines, the bit-tip speeds, and the bit types. Drum-Type Continuous Mining Machines: Three of the four principal manufacturers of drum-type miners use multi-motor designs that provide separate a-c motors for driving the cutting elements. Gear trains are used to reduce the speeds of the motors to the rotational speeds of the cutting elements. One of the three suppliers drives the cutting elements of its low-seam models with a heavy-duty drive chain that is equipped with cutting bits; all other functions of this machine have separate motor drives that are either electrical or hydraulic. The fourth principal manufacturer generally provides two a-c electric motors, utilizing gear reducers, drive shafts, and hydraulically operated engaging clutches to power all of the operating functions, including the cut¬ting elements. Some drum-type miners use trim chains, equipped with cutting bits, to cut clearance for the gear drives. These trim chains vary from two 305-mm (12-in.) chains to one 760-mm (30-in.) chain per machine, de¬pending upon the manufacturer's design concept. In all machines other than the low-seam models that use chains to drive the heads, the trim chains are driven by sprockets on the drive shaft of the final cutterhead drum; therefore, the trim chains are not used for power trans¬mission to the cutting elements. In addition to cutting clearance for the gear drives, the trim chains provide uniform bit spacing all the way across the head and assist in moving the cut material to an area where it is either loaded directly into the miner's conveyor or is easier to load into the conveyor. On a drum-type mining machine, the cutting ele¬ments all rotate from the top to the bottom. Therefore, the recommended procedure is to raise the cutterhead to the maximum seam height, sump the entire machine forward to maximum depth by means of a crawler drive, and then shear downward until the cutter elements reach the floor level. The maximum sump depth varies ac¬cording to the drum diameter, the type of material, the floor conditions, and the operator's abilities. It normally varies an average of 460 to 760 mm (18 to 30 in.). Cutter drums are supplied with two types of cutting bit holders. Weld-on holders are attached permanently. Pin-on holders are replaceable at the face. Cutter-drum diameters over the bit tips vary from 660 to 965 mm (26 to 38 in.), depending upon the chassis height of the machine and the range of cutting heights. Selection of a plant site is becoming increasingly more difficult and important, mainly due to advances in technology, antipollution laws and changing economic, social and community conditions. Discussion falls naturally under three headings: economic considerations, terrain considerations and environmental considerations. Aside from acquisition of surface rights, problems having to do with terrain, or topography, usually can be dealt with by management alone. Economic considerations largely involve decision-making by management plus negotiations with government regulatory agencies acting under set rules. Environmental considerations, such as air and water pollution, townsites, housing, schools, noise abatement, appearance, surface rehabilitation and the like usually are under the control of federal, state or municipal bodies with a large degree of decision-making. Successful solution of environmental problems often requires lengthy negotiations, during which public relations by the mining company play an important part. Existing union regulations or customs may confine decision- making and the establishment of wage rates, working conditions and regulations. These usually require considerable planning and negotiation. Initial production often is delayed by formal negotiations involving environmental considerations. Surface facilities usually can be divided into two broad categories: those for concentrating ores--such as gold, silver, base metals, low-grade iron ore and potash-which should be close to the mine to reduce ore-transportation costs to a minimum, and those where the ore is shipped elsewhere for treatment, such as direct-shipping iron ores, complex high-value ores requiring specialized treatment and ores from which special products are derived for local markets. The long-term aspects of plant-site selection too often are given no or insufficient consideration because of immediate financial limitations. As a result, additional capital expenditures may be required later for relocation of townsites, roads, railroads and plants to provide additional room for extension of open-pit operations, tailings disposal, storage, or danger to foundations through underground subsidence or open-pit mining. In the past, hillside sites for concentrating plants were preferred to take advantage of gravity-feed methods The modern trend, however, is to place as much equipment as possible on approximately the same level. Some costs relating to plant sites are included in this section. They are ranges as of the year 1970, and are offered only as general guides. Such costs will vary widely with geographical location and, of course, are subject to escalation due to increases in wage rates and cost of materials. Items in the bibliography contain more detailed and comprehensive data on specific subjects. Most contain bibliographies of their own.

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300° and 600°C (570° and 1,110°F) is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies, depending on structural homogeneity, porosity, and gangue quantity. Sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favors disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

The presence of moderate to high concentrations of colloidal clays in coal preparation plant waters can cause serious operating and economic problems for a coal company. Among the host of possible problems are the following: 1) Poor separation of clays in the plant thickener, resulting in: a) Increased ash in the clean coal. b) Increased specific gravity of the wash water and decreased coal recoveries at the desired quality. c) Increased thickener operating costs in trying to overcome the problem. 2) Decreased solid concentrations in the thickener underflow and increased pumping requirements to meet solids withdrawal requirements.

Oxide particles are commonly used as fillers in plastics, paper, rubber, etc. (particulate composites). The successful fabrication of such composites is dependent upon the adhesive strength of the filler particles to the matrix. The compatibility of the matrix and the filler particles is generally enhanced by the adsorption of surface modifiers such as surfactants and polymers at the particle-matrix interface. To develop a scientific basis for the selection of the appropriate modifiers it is necessary to understand their adsorption mechanisms. specifically, the adsorption of polymeric additives is attributed to a combination of chemical and electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Hydrogen bonding has been suggested to be the primary adsorption mechanism for nonionic polymers. However, a literature survey of the Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-oxide system suggested that PEO, a nonionic polymer, was substrate specific. A systematic study was undertaken to investigate the adsorption mechanisms of PEO on oxide particles. It was determined that strong Bronsted acid sites on the surface interact with the ether oxygen, a Lewis base, of PEO to induce adsorption. In this work, characterization of PEO binding sites on oxides is reported and the mechanisms of PEO adsorption are discussed.

During my College days in Mexico City, my Mineralogy Professor used to say "Mexico is the Horn of Plenty, rich in minerals, and it is easier to say which minerals are not found instead of stating all that exist. He said that the only ones missing are bauxite, diamonds and titanium ores." Today, twenty years later, a rutile mine in Oaxaca is in successful operation. Mexico has an area of approximately two million square kilometers, with volcanic activity, large shores and mountainous areas reaching as high as 6,000 meters above sea level. These conditions are favourable for most mineral deposits, some -of commercial value and others as a source of mineral samples only. (fig. No.1) In addition to vast mineral wealth, Mexico has -another valuable asset in .his people. Even before the discovery of America, natives were successfully mining metals, and during the Colonial --days, the mineral deposits were mined to increase the wealth of Spain, and it increased the --knowledge of mining. All this experience was passed along from generation to generation, and created a tradition of mining and minerals processing engineers, that currently account for approximately 182,000 persons supported by mining related activities.

Gulf Research & Development Company conducted the nation's first underground coal gasification test in steeply dipping beds near Rawlins, Wyoming. The geotechnical considerations played a major role in the initial site selection. The test plan included a detailed geotechnical program for site evaluation, test design, permitting, and environmental studies before the burn. During burn, the geotechnical activity continued in the form of monitoring surface subsidence and acoustic emission. The postburn evaluation included studies of the drill cores obtained from the burn zone and effects on the surrounding rock mass.

For the next few minutes, I will be discussing a product and category that many people laughed at for years. The product is cat box filiers or commonly referred to by the brand name KITTY LITTER. This product was introduced in 1947 by Ed Lowe using the name KITTY LITTER. From 1947 to 1964 the product was sold mainly through pet shops. Starting in 1964, the grocery trade began to carry cat litters. From that point, the cate gory began a solid growth trend. Particularly in the '7O's, cat litter has experienced the same kind of explosive growth that has characterized the entire pet market. For example, in the twelve months ending 9/21/79, cat litter unit volume grew by 15% versus the previous twelve months. The basis for this explosive growth is easy to comprehend. The cat population itself is rapidly expanding, reflecting the changing life- styles of Americans. As famiiies grow smaller, there is room for a pet. As apartment and con dominim living shrinks living space, a cat fills the human need for animal companionship more efficiently. Table I illustrates current cat litter market factors and projects major trends into the future to conclude that the cat litter market will equal $205MM in 1985. With this dynamic growth defined, it was imperative that a company such as Lowe's that was totally devoted to the commodity-priced products, evaluate the opportunities for added- value product differentiation. This process was started approximately four years ago with a search for new cat litter products and other new product opportunities.

Australian underground coal mines predominately use the longwall method for coal extraction. In longwall mining at least two parallel roadways known as gateroads are mined to delineate the sides of the longwall block, a longwall installation face is then driven connecting the gateroads to enable the longwall mining equipment to be installed. Roadway development should ideally be ahead of the longwall so that the longwall equipment can be installed into the newly developed panel with minimal delay to coal production. A discrete event model of roadway development can help assess how a particular configuration may perform with high levels of variability and uncertainty in operations. One of the major delays associated with roadway development is caused by the shuttle car due to its cyclic stop-start nature. Shuttle car travelling paths and machine interactions are normally constraint by the mine?s roadway layout and mine safety issues. This paper presents simulations of shuttle car route options which can be considered at the design stage to minimize the cycle time of a shuttle car as part of a general roadway development simulation model developed using 3D Flexsim.

The U.S. Bureau of nines evaluated the potential availability of tungsten from 57 tungsten mines and deposits in 19 market economy countries (1). The 38 properties that were producing at the time this study was performed contain approximately 375,000 tons1 of W03 (tungsten trioxide). The total estimated recoverable resource from all properties studied, both producers and nonproducers, was 1.2 million tons W03 (demonstrated level). Approximately 143,000 tons of W03 is recoverable from producing properties with costs at or below the January 1983 market prices. The study indicates that by 1990 production from currently operating mines in market economy countries will decrease as their demonstrated resources become exhausted. Some of this potential decline may be offset by lower than anticipated levels of market demand, discoveries of additional resources at producing mines, development of other known deposits, and/or discoveries of new deposits. Development of new tungsten resources in market economy countries will likely result in costs higher than exist at currently producing properties. The People's Republic of China has been steadily increasing production and export of tungsten in various form and currently supplies about 25 pct of U.S. imports. China's tungsten mines are large, high-grade operations capable of producing at relatively low cost. These factors, coupled with China's apparent need for foreign exchange, could lead to further expansions of production and exports from China, with a consequent increased dependence by market economy countries on China for tungsten requirements and a threat to the survival of the market economy countries' tungsten industries.

The spherical agglomeration process provides an attractive method for the cleaning and recovery of fine coals in the form of compact oil-bonded pellets. In treating a washery effluent containing 50% minus 20 micron material by this technique, the slurry was first mixed under vigorous agitation with oil to deash and dewater the fine coal. The flocculated coal pulp was then formed into larger agglomerates on a modified balling disc. The operation of a semi-pilot scale process is described and an analysis of some of the operating and system variables is given. A semi-theoretical expression to predict the final agglomerate size under various conditions is derived and compared with the experimental data. Coal producers are faced with a growing requirement to clean and recover fine mesh coals. Greater mechanization of the extractive and preparation processes has resulted in finer-sized products containing larger quantities of associated foreign matter and preparation plant effluents contain quantities of fine coals which are potentially valuable. These losses will probably increase with the expansion of production and will require the development of effective disposal and utilization processes under pressure of the lack of adequate disposal areas, the enforcement of air and stream pollution laws, and the economic need to obtain the maximum yield of salable product(1)

The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining’s East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and RailSystems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km(3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

The study investigates noise-induced hearing loss among miners in underground coal mines in Turkey, considering factors like occupation, age, and exposure time. The research employs logistic regression analysis to reveal the relationship between hearing loss and these factors. The findings suggest that occupational groups and duration of noise exposure significantly affect hearing loss. Miners in production groups and those exposed to noise for 10-14 years have a higher risk. The study concludes that age does not significantly increase the probability of hearing loss.

Coal preparation is based on the properties of noncombustable materials (impurities) in coal being different from the organic constituents. The most commonly used property difference is density, via its affect on settling rates; and either gravitational or centrifugal forces can be used to remove impurities. However, examination of various particles settling rate correlations shows that at smaller sizes, particle drag becomes a very important factor. Classification, based on differential settling rates, becomes impractical and some property other than density must provide the basis for fine coal cleaning. Froth flotation and agglomeration employ differences in surface properties to clean coal. These methods are very successful except that the oxidized surface of a pyrite particle is somewhat hydrophobic and will tend to be collected with the organic portion of the coal. Surface property cleaning techniques have not been very effective in rejecting sulfur, except for two-stage flotation.

The advent of open nit mining permitted the development and processing of minerals never before thought possible. New equipment was needed; new techniques were devised; new methods were called for. This development and acquisition of new techniques, methods and equipment did not, however, stir the souls of our industry and educational leaders sufficiently to a recognition of the problem of people, especially the future development of the people needed in open-pit mining. The people problem has been and will be with us as long as there are two of them. The development of people will be required for the same reason. The problem of developing future personnel for open-pit mining is not what must be developed; that is known to all of us and can be briefly stated ashore and better of everything." As I see it, the real problem lies in determining (1) what personnel are really critical, (2) why are they critical and (3) how can we develop them.

Until recently, the volumes delivered and unloaded from heap-leaching pads have been estimated by manual methods at Wharf Resources' South Dakota operation. In August 1989, the Engineering Department acquired the MINE-SURVEY software developed by GEM COM Services, Inc. of Vancouver, Canada, as part of a mine planning/grade control software package. The implementation of MINE-SURVEY for pad control resulted in a cost-effective tool to provide accurate and prompt estimates of ore delivered or unloaded from the pads. Volumes can be calculated in a matter of minutes as opposed to hours or days. Another benefit is the ease of comparison of as-build and designed volumes, plotting cross-section in any orientation, importing into AUTOCAD, validation of ore densities and truck factors. This paper describes the application of the MINE-SURVEY systems in heap leaching pad volumetrics.

In many papers concerned with fundamentals of the froth flotation process, authors have considered the contents of a flotation cell to be comprised of two immiscible phases, the froth and the pulp. I (Of course, each of these phases is in turn made up of several solid phases plus air and water.) This generalized concept of the flotation system can be extended by considering the cell contents to include two phases: an extracting phase, the air bubbles plus the collector, which removes a selected mineral component from the second phase, the ore pulp. Thus, there is an analogy between a flotation system on the one hand, and chemical extracting systems, such a solvent extraction system or a leaching system, on the other hand. Such extracting systems may be operated in cocurrent or countercurrent fashion. This paper includes first a brief discussion on the general nature of cocurrent and countercurrent operation as applied to froth flotation, and then presents the experimental results of flotation of a specular hematite ore by each method, using a tall oil fatty acid as collector. Cocurrent Flotation A conventional flotation circuit involving roughing, scavenging, and cleaning flotation is illustrated schematically in Figure 1. In such a circuit the col¬lector, or extractant, and new feed ore enter together at the head of the rougher circuit, and flow cocurrently to the scavenger circuit where more collector is added. According to this practice, sufficient collector is added to the head of the rougher (and scavenger) so that the final tailings are of low enough grade to be discarded. Since the flow of collector and ore is cocurrent, the process consists of single stage contact between the extracting phase and the ore pulp. If the scavenger concentrate is recycled to the head of rougher, the overall circuit has some of the characteristics of countercurrent flow. Flotation pulps with boron minerals such as colemanite and borax using primary amine collectors, e.g. dodecylamine, exhibit collector precipitation above a critical pH depending on the amine concentration. This was earlier attributed to the formation of a mine hydroborate. However, results from this current study indicate that the precipitate is dode-cylamine, rather than dodecylamine hydroborate. A systematic study involving solubility, zeta potential, microflotation, adsorption, and surface tension measurements is presented to elucidate the role of a mine precipitates in boron flotation systems.
