The first version of the longwall strata control and maintenance system (LSCMS) has been successfully developed by the Strata Control Re¬search Team at the University of Alabama. The system includes a software package designed to monitor shield leg pressure, interpret the data and predict the forthcoming roof loads and the existence of geological anomalies. It can also detect maintenance problems of the face equipment. The LSCMS was installed underground and connected to the surface terminals at Drummond's Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama. The system has proven to be a useful and practical system for improving safety and efficiency in coal-mining operation. The Shoal Creek Mine is a new, large coal mine operated by Drummond with two longwall panels. The Blue Creek seam is the primary source of coal production. It is located at a depth of 275 to 440 m (900 to 1,450 ft) below the surface with an approximate 2% southwest dip. Typical strata conditions are represented by two stratigraphic columns (Figs. la and b). A fireclay/dark shale parting (called Middleman) 0.2- 0.7-m- (1- to 2.5-ft-) thick exists between the Mary Lee and Blue Creek seams. Mining conditions vary from area to area. This mainly depends on the Blue Creek seam thickness that ranges from 0.9 to 2.9 m (3 to 9.5 ft). The thickness of the Mary Lee and the parting is relatively consistent with a to¬tal of 0.9 m (3 ft). Microtunneling provides a necessary solution for multiple utility crossings associated with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company?s (MTACC) Eastside Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road. Construction of four TBM tunnels and their approach structures at the eastern end of the project in Sunnyside, Queens required significant modification and expansion of the railroad infrastructure at this location. Maintenance of railroad traffic during project construction is a principal requirement. As a consequence fourteen (14) utility crossing segments are being installed under active traffic by microtunneling methods. Microtunnels were installed in a variety of conditions including depths, types of soils and construction restraints.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008 ? ?I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated? (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and often spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep the operation running. With examination there are some things that can be done to make the best use of ventilation systems. Should there be surplus air, in which some of these options may result - financial and other benefits can be obtained. Some of the issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and non-metal mines. Also, operations are faced with demands from reserves that are deeper, hotter and further away from fans and shafts, not to mention increased production demands. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal non-metal operations but some may be applicable to coal too. OPTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT Some of the areas to be addressed are shop ventilation methods, auxiliary equipment areas, dedicated intakes and returns, optimizing development, examination of mine airway utilization and alternative ventilation methods. UNDERGROUND SHOPS First, examine what is being done with the underground shop air. If it is being coursed directly to the returns there may be some potential to better utilize this, in most cases, relatively contaminant free air. Research the legal options for ventilating mine shops. MSHA regulations in 30CFR 57.4761 (1) allow the following options: To confine or prevent the spread of toxic gases from a fire originating in an underground shop where maintenance work is routinely done on mobile equipment, one of the following measures shall be taken: use of control doors or bulkheads, routing of the mine shop air directly to an exhaust system, reversal of mechanical ventilation, or use of an automatic fire suppression system in conjunction with an alternate escape route. The alternative used shall at all times provide at least the same degree of safety as control doors or bulkheads. Discussion This regulation gives some operators flexibility in ventilating underground shop facilities. If shop air is to be coursed through the work area, and then directly to the mine return, the question should be asked ? is the quality of air good enough to be reused in the mine, and if so, what are the risks? Can the risks be accommodated and managed to accomplish the change? If so, a considerable increase in mine level airflow could be attained by reusing shop air. Clearly, regulations are a minimum standard, and can be exceeded. Metal non-metal mine regulations are not as specific as coal due to the multitude of different mining methods and conditions utilized. Risks must be thoroughly examined and addressed to assure a safe environment. Issues Determine what contaminants are being produced in the work area ? welding fumes, diesel exhaust, paint fumes, chemicals and solvents, etc. Survey the area and determine exposures. MSHA requires exposure monitoring in 30 CFR 57.5002 (1) of dust, gasses mists and fumes to assure air quality is being met. Perform surveys and examine existing data to quantify personal and area concentrations of contaminants. Often there is adequate circulation such that exposure levels in shop work areas are low. After sending shop air back into the system any contaminants would be further lowered by dilution with other mine intake air downstream. Look at the shop work schedule. If only on day shift, the other two shifts and possibly weekends have no activity or source of contamination to affect the ventilation system. The worst case planning scenario would be a shop fire. Study and simulate how this would affect the mine and shop area. MSHA regulations require an escape route and a fire suppression system be installed and maintained as follows in 30 CFR 57.4671 (1): (d) Automatic fire suppression system and escape route. If used as an alternative, the automatic fire suppression system and alternate escape route shall meet the following requirements: (1) The suppression system shall be? (d)(1)(i) Located in the shop area; (d)(1)(ii) The appropriate size and type for the particular fire hazards involved; and (d)(1)(iii) Inspected at weekly intervals and properly maintained. (2) The escape route shall bypass the shop area so that the route will not be affected by a fire in the shop area. Case Study In an underground room and pillar mine, active mine workings were advancing further away from the mine shaft with deteriorated returns and leakage having a negative effect on ventilation airflows to the face. Mine level airflows were 236 m3/s (500,000 cfm) and shop airflows were 24 m3/s (50,000 cfm) (see Figure 1A). No additional capacity was available at the main surface fan. A solution was to utilize the shop air then send it to the mine areas instead of directly to the return. Considerable information on shop air quality and exposures from many years of operation was examined and no negative data was discovered. A risk analysis determined that moving forward with a shop air reuse program was desirable. A plan was developed, analyzed and decision to proceed approved by mine management. The change was simulated on the computer with the USBM/MTU MFire program before being implemented. This included utilizing fire scenarios to examine potential exposures to inby mining sections and plan escape routes. SAG mill liner development draws primarily on practical experience from SAG milling operations supported by computer-based modeling of charge motion in SAG mills and on established good design practice. Liner design needs to respond to the process aspects of mill liner action that are critical to good SAG mill performance, i.e., the impact of shell liners on the grinding action and of grates and pulp lifters on pulp discharge. In recent years, the trend in large SAG mills has been to use wide-spaced shell lifters with large lifter face angles, primarily to reduce packing and ball/liner damage, and to use larger, hence fewer, mill liner parts to reduce downtime at liner change-outs.

A large-diameter road tunnel will cross beneath the strait in Istanbul and expand the infrastructure bottleneck between Europe and Asia. The technical planning of the tunneling operations poses complex challenges. Therefore, the construction consortium ordered a specially adapted tunnel boring machine (TBM) from Herrenknecht. The 13.6-m (44.6-ft) machine, a Mixshield, was completed in early July 2013 in Schwanau, Germany. To get from the European to the Asian side of Istanbul, people and goods have to cross the Bosporus Straits. So far, two road bridges as well as ferries provide the only transport link between the two parts of the city and the two continents. The tense traffic situation for the nearly 14 million residents of the city and for international transit traffic should be improved considerably thanks to the construction of a new road tunnel under the Bosporus. ?The project is certainly one of the most challenging tunneling operations currently being addressed in the world,? said Herrenknecht project manager Georg Schleer. The route of the ?Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project? runs around 100 m (330 ft) below sea level at its deepest point. The interior diameter of the tunnel will be 12 m (40 ft) so that two lanes in each direction can be accommodated. They will extend one above the other on two levels. 3.34 km (2.1 miles) of the tunnel with a total length of 5.4 km (3.3 miles) are being created by a 13.6-m- (44.6-ft-) diameter Herrenknecht TBM that will begin its underground mission from a launch shaft on the Asian side.

The Flambeau and Ridgeway Mines, both owned and operated by wholly owned subsidiaries of Kennecott Minerals Company, were located very close to populated areas having initial concerns about health, safety and the environment. The success of both operations depended upon developing a framework of community support and enhancing sustainable development opportunities throughout the entire life cycle of the mining operations to address these concerns. The protection of the Flambeau River was the cornerstone of the Flambeau Mine’s success. The highest priority for the Ridgeway Mine was to ensure long-term physical, chemical and ecological stability of the reclaimed mine site. Both of these goals have been achieved and are discussed in this paper, which highlights Kennecott Minerals Company’s integration of sustainable development principles into its business decision-making and management processes.

Considerable movement is afoot internationally to rationalize standards and regulations relating to valuations and the qualifications for valuation professionals. In July 2000 the International Valuation Standards Committee released expanded standards, and additional important improvements are planned by 2003. Possible updates to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and potential adoption of IAS by the U.S. could significantly impact minerals appraisers. Standards designed specifically for mineral asset valuation are under development in Canada and the U.S., with Australia’s internationally respected VALMIN Code providing the benchmark. In the U.S., the all-encompassing Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is annually modified and continues to gain deeper acceptance, while the SEC holds fast to its antiquated rule prohibiting reporting of a quantitative estimate and value for non-reserve mineralization. Some important international trade agreements are driving actions to free the trade in professional services. In July 2000, an international workshop was held to initiate discussion on minimum qualifications for appraisers to work internationally. Pressure for uniform minimum qualifications and rules for professionals internationally will continue to build. The U.S. is historically among the slowest countries to implement such initiatives, with its state level licensure barriers having the potential to cause some of its professionals to be stranded in an international backwater. Structural change is needed in Australia’s VALMIN Code to remove conflict with the latest International Valuation Standards. The mineral valuation standards developers of Australia, Canada and the U.S. should work jointly on updating VALMIN for global use.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can cause serious and irreparable negative health effects, including silicosis and lung cancer. Workers in coal mines have the potential of being exposed to RCS found in dust generated by various mining processes. The silica content of respirable dust in one single mine can vary substantially over both time and location. The current monitoring approach for RCS relies on the use of traditional air sampling followed by laboratory analysis. Results generated using this approach are generally not available for several days to several weeks after sampling, and this delay prevents timely and effective intervention if needed. An alternate analytical method is needed to reduce the time required to quantify the RCS exposure of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new method using commercially available portable infrared spectrometers for measuring RCS at the end of the sampling shift. This paper will describe the application of the new field-based RCS analytical process for coal mines, including the use of the new method with the existing Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Unit. In a case study conducted by NIOSH with a coal mine operator in West Virginia, field-based RCS analysis was completed at a mine site to evaluate the new technique. The RCS analysis results obtained by the field-based method in this case study showed sufficiently strong correlation with results obtained by the MSHA standard laboratory analysis method to allow the mine operator to use the field-based method for evaluating process improvements.

Heterogeneity and discontinuity significantly affect rock strength. For accurate stability prediction, intact rock behavior is imperatively included in rock mass behavior. However, past research largely used arbitrary scaling approaches to produce rock strength. This paper considers a stochastic approach in order to determine the strength of a rock. Based on the laboratory data, a MATLAB® with extreme value stochastic model generates a database for each physico-mechanical property. Then FLAC® simulates laboratory-sized rock specimens. The grids developed in the numerical model can in turn develop random material properties in MATLAB®, which researchers then applied to the final FLAC® model. Model runs simulate the approach performed in the laboratory. The results from the model indicate that a stochastic approach produces strengths that are lower than a deterministic approach. Failure modes for each specimen are different, similar to observations in the laboratory. In addition, random density also influences the failure mode, highlighting the importance of stochastic analysis in rocks.

Floor heave events in underground mining often happen suddenly and cause risk to workers and equipment. Reducing the risk of floor heave must be addressed in mining layout design. To improve that design one must understand the significant parameters that are correlated to the occurrence of floor heave. To accomplish that goal, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed a numerical study using FLAC3D, taking advantage of its strain softening and ubiquitous joint capabilities to better simulate the floor heave and caving mechanisms involved at an actual mine site.

A 16 m by 4.7 m by 24.5 m (52 ft by 15.5 ft by 80.5 ft) underground ore bin was constructed at an 810 m (2660 ft) overburden depth in poor quality, faulted and altered intrusive rocks at Molycorp's block caving molybdenum mine. Geological engineering incorporated detailed structural mapping, rock quality classification, in-situ stress field determinations, numerical stress and failure analysis, and convergence monitoring. The ore bin was mined by conventional methods from the top down and utilized a bored raise for mucking. The initial ground support of rock bolts, lightweight steel sets, and reinforced concrete was later supplemented with an array of 6, 12 and 21 m tensioned, grouted rock bolts when wall closure was noted in the upper ore bin area. The supplementary support was optimized by computer analysis and monitoring.

There was a time when an occasional failure of a tailings embankment was considered an acceptable risk associated with mining activities. This is not the case anymore. A major tailings failure today could result in the indictment of mine officials, huge fines and a possible site closure due to the loss of operating permits. As a result of this changed operational environment, tailings disposal facilities must be operated with these potential consequences in mind. Physical controls for tailings embankments are prohibitively expensive. However, the nuclear industry has developed a system of administrative controls as an alternative to physical controls. Administrative controls may be defined as control of actions, through organizations and management, using written procedures, record keeping, review and audit to assure operation of a facility in a safe manner (10 CFR 50). Administrative controls can reduce the cost of operating tailings impoundments, as well as increase the level of confidence in these facilities.

The Candelaria copper-gold mine is located approximately 25 km south and east of Copiapo in Region III, Chile. The original concentrator was designed to treat 28,000 t/d (30,800 stpd) of chalcopyrite-bearing ore through a circuit consisting of a single 11.0 m (36 ft) diameter SAG mill, two ball mills, conventional rougher and scavenger flotation, column cell cleaner flotation, and ceramic disc filtration. The plant was commissioned in August 1994 and quickly reached capacity and expected levels of metallurgical performance. In May 1996, a decision was made to double the capacity of the concentrator by the addition of a second line of equipment. The expanded facilities were commissioned in October 1997, less than 18 months after the decision to proceed, and well within the budget. The original concentrator facilities were replicated or duplicated as much as possible, however, a number of important equipment changes were made to take advantage of industry developments since the original concentrator was designed. These included the use of Eimco 120 m3 (4,200 ft3) cells for rougher and scavenger flotation and the installation of a Svedala VTM -800 Vertimill for regrinding. This paper describes the rationale behind these changes and explores the reasons for the success of the project.

Introduction The Open Cut is one of the best known landmarks in South Dakota's Black Hills. It is the site of the original discovery of the Homestake ledge, or lead, in 1876. Between that time and 1945, the Open Cut produced about 36 Mt (40 million st) of gold ore, the majority of which was drawn from underground operations. In 1981, a drilling program was undertaken to determine how much ore the old timers left behind. The results of this study indicated an ore body made up of broken and caved ground, and solid blocks in pillars and crowns. Reserves are estimated at about 6.8 Mt (7.5 million st) of gold ore, grading at 4 g/t (0.116 oz per st). Total tonnage of material, including waste, is estimated at more than 60 Mt (66 million st). The mining plan is a combination open pit and underground operations. The bottom 78 m (255 ft) will be mined by the underground panel-caving method. The open pit was designed as a contractor operation up to the expected milling stage or the point of sustained ore production. The pit was designed to avoid disturbance of US Highway 85 near Lead, SD. In 1983, the South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment approved the mining and reclamation plan. Test mining began in the north of the Open Cut using open pit methods. Upon completion of the test pit, Homestake Mining's board of directors approved an expanded mine plan. They committed an additional $27.1 million to prestrip the ore body that is expected to yield 23 t (750,000 oz) of gold. Project life is estimated at 15 years. Exploration program In early 1980, 10 diamond drill holes were drilled from the surface in the vicinity of the east side of the Open Cut. The reserves delineated by that drilling were too small to justify their development. A continuation of this study attempted to quantify the tonnage remaining in the bottom of the Open Cut in the crushed remnants of old stope-and-crown pillars. This was originally thought to be minable by improved drawhole methods using highly mechanized procedures. By early 1981, however, thinking turned toward surface mining methods. The effort to quantify minable ore tonnage ultimately involved drilling 385 reverse-circulation rotary drill holes. These were drilled from August 1981 to March 1983 in several groups of holes. Each group, or drilling program, had a slightly different immediate goal or purpose. The holes were drilled to various depths using truck-mounted Drill Tech 40 drills with doublewalled 76 mm (3 in.) pipe with 134 mm (5.25 in.) three-cone rotary bits. Initially, wet drilling was employed using a cyclone collection system. Since cutting recovery was not as high as it should have been, all subsequent drilling was dry. The cuttings were collected and deposited by way of a cyclone into the sample bag. The pickup for the cuttings using the three-cone bits was about 50 mm (2 in.) above the bottom of the hole. Overall cutting recovery for the drilling program was estimated at 75%. Samples were taken on each 1.5 m (5 ft) of hole drilled. Each sample was split into three 48-g (1-2/3 assay ton) charges. The accepted value was the straight average of the three charges. Because of the known "nugget effect," assays were nearly impossible to duplicate. Therefore, to validate the regular assays, a series of screen fire assays were run. Based on this method of assays and checks, it was concluded that 10% more ounces would be produced than indicated by mine grade. Test pit The northernmost portion of the mine as planned is known as the Terraville test pit. This portion was mined ahead of the rest and separately. It provided answers to questions on slope stability, reserves correlation, mill recoveries, mining costs, and surface mining conditions in various weather and ground conditions since many boulders and much timber were expected. The mining plan for this portion of the pit was successful. More ore was mined than was expected. Mixing of Open Cut ore with underground ore in the mill feed was successful. The velocity of detonation (VOD) is a significant property considered when rating an explosive. It may be quantified as a confined or unconfined velocity. The confined velocity is the rate at which the detonation wave propagates through an explosive within a blast hole or any restrained space. The unconfined velocity emanates when an explosive is detonated in the open. However, the confined velocity is more significant as explosives are usually employed under a definite degree of confinement. This paper evaluates the increment of air deck volume and its effect on the VOD. The air gap (air deck) volume is increased stepwise from 10 to 30% of the total blast hole volume by reducing the stemming height in the collar zone. Thereafter, the VOD estimation in the 172-mm-diameter explosive column is conducted using the Dáutriche technique. It is observed that the VOD reduced with the increasing air deck volume and detonation failure is high when 30% of the blast hole volume is replaced with air deck. It is deduced that the increment of the air deck volume has an effect on the attenuation of the steady-state VOD.

Local community acceptance is a key aspect of planning and managing mining projects, whether through sustainability assessment and reporting or corporate social responsibility programs. However, there has been very little research to understand the determinants of community acceptance. This paper seeks to identify key mine characteristics and demographic factors that influence individual acceptance of mining projects. Six demographic factors and 16 mine characteristics were selected based on literature review. Four of the six demographics factors were confirmed to be significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with people?s attitude of the importance of the mine characteristics. All sixteen mine characteristics are identified as important factors. The most important mining factors are Job opportunities, water shortage or pollution, air pollution and land pollution. Both the mining and control groups have same opinion of 12 mining characteristics and differ on four (infrastructure improvement, labor shortage for other businesses, noise pollution, and mine life). During design and management of mines, this data can be used as a reference. This result will facilitate better choice experiment (survey) design for discrete choice modeling. Such discrete choice models can provide a viable framework for data-driven community engagement and sustainable mine management.

Newmont Gold&apos;s methods for deposit modeling vary, depending on geology, mining and processing methods, economic feasibility and availability of historical information. It is argued that successful modeling requires understanding these factors, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the various modeling techniques and being flexible in selecting the appropriate methods. Newmont is one of the world&apos;s largest gold mining companies, with operations in the United States, Peru, Mexico, Indonesia and Uzbekistan. And it is active in exploration worldwide. At the end of 1996, Newmont declared a total reserve of 1.15 equity kt (37.1 million equity oz) of gold and 2.17 equity Mt (2.39 million st) of copper. The gold deposits managed by Newmont totaled 752 Mt (829 million st) of ore containing 1.28 kt (41.3 million oz) of gold averaging 1.71 g/t (0.05 oz/st). In addition, Newmont is developing a porphyry copper-gold deposit that totals 9.1 Gt (1 billion st) of ore containing 380 t (12.1 million oz) of gold and 4.82 Mt (5.32 million st) of copper. (In May 1997, Newmont Gold Co. merged with Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp., thus increasing Newmont&apos;s reserves to 1.72 kt or 55.2 million oz of gold and 2.17 Mt or 2.39 million st of copper.)

The Pipeline gold ore body was discovered in Lander County, NV in March 1991. Construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March 1996. The $289-million project was placed on a fast-track development schedule upon completion of permitting and corporate approval. The mine and mill were commissioned 11 months after the start of construction and the project ended up $40 million under budget. Project design and construction management were provided by Placer Dome Project Development Division (PDD). History The Cortez Joint Venture has operated in northeast Lander County since the late 1960s. The business structure is comprised of 60% Placer Dome and 40%Kennecott Exploration. Throughout the years, production has been from several small open-pit deposits— Cortez, Horse Canyon, Gold Acres and now Pipeline.

Aggregate is an essential input to every economy, so governments need to ensure a sustainable supply of these resources through planning. There is also a need to shift from a linear economy to a more circular one, in which wastes are recycled rather than landfilled, so as to increase eco-efficiency. The purpose of the Sustainable Aggregates Planning in South East Europe (SNAP-SEE, SEE/D/0167/2.4/X) project is to develop a Toolbox for Aggregates Planning to assist governments and stakeholders in national, regional, primary and secondary, aggregates planning in southeast European countries. The Toolbox comprises documents on stakeholder consultation, data and analysis methodologies, a vision of best practices in aggregates planning and how to build an aggregates plan. The Toolbox will also support ongoing efforts to enhance minerals policy in the European Union (EU) as called for by the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials.
