In October 2000, temporary seismographic stations were installed above the Trail Mountain Mine, Emery County, Utah, USA to supplement a regional network. Over seven months, 1826 mining-induced seismic events were recorded with a magnitude range of M 0 to M 2.2 (Arabasz et al., 2002, 2005). Routine event locations for this dataset cluster around the longwall mining activity during the recording interval. However, applying a double difference relocation technique to the routine locations significantly improves the correlation between mining activity and event location. The resulting relocations depend greatly on station distribution and the number of arrival time picks. We use this dense temporary array to assess station distribution requirements for applying the double difference technique at other mines by systematically removing data from available stations, thus simulating sparser networks. The insight gained using the Trail Mountain dataset is used to develop a metric for assessing the usefulness of above-mine networks and to develop a tool for expanding seismic network coverage. To verify the appropriateness of these tools for wider application, we examine data from two additional mines located in the western United States. Improving the relative locations of mining-induced seismic events highlights the association of these events with active portions of the mine. Clusters, regions of quiescence and relative timing of events can be used by mine operators to assess hazard, optimize production, and evaluate performance of mine plans. The lessons learned from this study may be used in future network design to improve accuracy of event locations at other mines.

A site-characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic assessment of rock mass properties is presented. The strategy, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock-failure process, entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing extreme value statistics and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and, field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass can be estimated by using this proposed method. The results of the analysis can be incorporated into the design of underground structures. Then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). The panel of judges included Aaron Noble (West Virginia University), Nick Gow (FLSmidth), Ren Bryce (Freeport-McMoRan Inc.), David Perkins (Derrick Corp.), Jim Metsa (Weir Minerals) and Scott Shuey (Newmont).A special thank you is extended to the sponsors of the MPD Student Poster Contest, to all the students who participated and to the panel of judges. Productivity achievements in underground coal mining over the past ten years highlight the improvement of management practices as well as the adoption of new technology. Research findings and results from operational studies characterize the aspects of good management that translate into high productivity. In concert with these findings, the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is being developed, under co-sponsorship of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia University Energy and Water Research Center, as a knowledge-based system to enhance more efficient management of underground coal mines. Concentrating on capturing the intricate knowledge needed to manage a mine effectively, MMSS will encompass information and rules on work scheduling, desired work practices, regulations impinging on operations and planning, responses to operating problems, and the labor-management work agreement.

The introduction of continuous papermaking in the early 1800's was the beginning of the industry as we know it today. Since that time, the majority of the paper produced has employed an acid process. However, in the mid 1960?s, European producers began a transition to an alkaline papermaking process. Early European mill conversions to alkaline papermaking begun in the 601s, accelerated during the 1970's influenced by the dramatically higher cost for OPEC energy as well as the high cost of fiber and imported filler clay.

"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."

In a shearer longwall mining operation, the longwall bits are responsible for breaking into and chip-ping the broken coal blocks away from the coal face. However, underground observations have found that a large number of longwall bits are always working under various degrees of wear. Reduction of the bit wear could be realized by using better designed longwall bits and properly selected shearer operating parameters. A computer program has been developed to simulate the performance of the longwall bits. The shape of the bit head, the installation of the bits on the drum and the operation parameters are the information required by the program. Through the simulations, the main factors affecting the bit wearing process are identified. Suggestions are also made for improving the design of the longwall bits.

This study tests the ability of a new air nozzle system, located under the drill deck shroud, to improve the dust capture of the drill deck shroud. The system consists of three air nozzles supplied with regulated pressurized air and located midway down the shroud in the off-inlet corners of the shroud. Laboratory testing produced operating curves for the system that showed an optimum operating point of 207 kPa (30 psi) and generated respirable dust reductions of 48% to 52% from the drill deck shroud.

In this paper, we present design and implementation details of a fuzzy-behavior-based controller for an automated excavator. This robotic excavator must be equipped with sensors, actuators and an embedded control system. The excavator controller uses neural-networks to interpret forces and torques gathered from bucket mounted force sensors during the excavation process. Implementation details and experimental results using the fuzzy behavior based excavation controller are given for several excavation tasks. These excavation tasks demonstrate some of the complex skills that are essential for an autonomous mining excavator controller.

The abstract of the paper discusses the challenge of quantifying iron content in a coal deposit in Kazakhstan. The iron dataset is limited, coming from only three drill holes and some stope samples, while a large amount of geological information is available from legacy drill hole data. The paper proposes a workflow using multiple-point geostatistics to model geological domains and two-point geostatistics to model iron content within these domains. The results show that the direct sampling (DeeSse) algorithm effectively reproduces the complex seam layers, and sequential Gaussian simulation models the iron within each domain.

EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. However, successful application of these diagrams requires several things be kept in mind to prevent what others have termed ?gross errors? in their calculation and use. The aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the thermodynamic equilibrium software, STABCAL. This includes a breakdown of the Gibbs? Phase Rule and how it is employed in STABCAL to modify the diagrams. This methodology was then applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system and resulting diagrams are compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The resulting mass-balanced diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is noted to compare well with spectroelectrochemical measurements using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.

The separation and recovery of copper from cyanide solution has been investigated since the early 1900s. The precipitation of copper using sulfide ion was patented in 1911 by Williamson, published by Leaver & Woolf of the USBM in 1931 and Cyanamid in 1960s. The current practice of sulfide precipitation is used in various processes such as “SART" for cyanide regeneration and copper recovery. The precipitation of copper sulfide requires the pH of the clear solution to be in the range of 4-6. The precipitated copper sulfide can be sold to smelters. Alternatively, copper cyanide can be precipitated from clear solutions in the pH range of 2-3. However, selling copper cyanide is challenging because of its cyanide content. Past work has focused on the use of boiling sulfuric acid to convert copper cyanide to copper sulfate as published by Seracini in 1991. This paper describes a simple process to convert copper cyanide to copper oxide using sodium hydroxide at ambient temperatures. The cuprite can be sold to smelters or used as a feed to an electrowinning circuit to produce copper cathodes. The process provides an effective method to recover copper from cyanide solutions with a lower capital requirement.

Modification of kaolin with amino and mercapto silanes allows it to form crosslinks and confers significant improvements in modulus, abrasion resistance, compression set and other physical properties of a broad range of polymers.

The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta contains bituminous sands interbedded with other sediments which form the reject encountered during mining operations. Grade prediction is based on a combination of geological interpretation, computer modelling and past mining experience. In addition to estimates for ore, an accurate estimate of "waste" or "reject," are required for Mine Planning. This study investigates the ability of point-kriging using geostatistics, to augment the existing data base of drill-holes in a study area on Syncrude's leases. This approach enables the assessment of potential "worst" case - "best" case scenarios within the context of Mine Planning.

A four-mile length of interceptor sewer tunnel in Manhattan has finished sizes ranging from 10'6" to 14'6" horseshoe. Mixed face conditions were anticipated in three areas and encountered in five. All were short but since the tunnel lies well below the water table and failures would involve important utilities, major structures and human lives, great care had to be exercized in choosing a construc¬tion method. Chemical consolidation was selected as the best approach with compressed air working as a backup system. Initially grouting was accomplished from within the tunnel, but treatment from the surface was more successful and was later adopted. The soils consisted largely of impermeable weak silts and it was found possible to inhibit access of water to this material so that it could be controlled by breasting within the tunnel without loss of stability. It is concluded that in the interlayered permeable and impermeable soils encountered, chemical grouting would successfully stabilize the working face. INTRODUCTION An interceptor sewer is currently under construction along the entire length of the west side of Manhattan. When complete, the tunnel will intercept and divert to a treatment plant (also under construction) a daily flow in excess of 200 million gallons per day. About 9 miles of the interceptor sewer is in tunnel and the remain¬der is cut-and-cover construction. The pockets of high silica blue dust across the entire high grade hematite deposits in the Bailadila sector bothers the excavation activity due their iron content, which is higher than the threshold value specified by the Indian Bureau of Mines and the agony of stacking them separately due to their fragile & powdery nature. The physical nature of blue dust and its negligible alumina content makes these a potential source of hematite, which is a blessing in disguise. As most of the particles are in the form of an independent grain making it appropriately suitable feed for dry magnetic separation and thus the dry beneficiation has turned a bane into boon by enabling to produce concentrate either suitable for using as DSO or amenable for blending. The emphasis on carrying out dry beneficiation studies in the present context serves the purpose of mineral conservation, mitigates the issues of excavation and stacking as well as conservation of water resource. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot scale dry beneficiation studies carried out on blue dust of 48 – 60%Fe and Silica up to 30% at 25 Kg/hour to 400 Kg/hour, resulting in production of concentrate assaying 60 – 65%Fe. INTRODUCTION High silica blue dust (HSBD) is associated with Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) and is available in abundance in various pockets across the Iron ore body in the Bailadila region of Chhattisgarh state. High Silica Blue dust occurs in the form of free granular particles and also as friable lumps. The chemical quality of this falls under sub-grade category (45 – 55%Fe) and as per the guidelines of Indian Bureau of Mines, these are to be stacked and conserved as future resources of Iron if it can’t be utilized in the present circumstances. Due to its friable nature, stacking of HSBD is a challenge and it is also compounding the problem by polluting the air under high velocity wind conditions. Because of its physical nature and occurrence in pockets pose challenge to systematic mining. The existing processing set up of the operating mines is designed to treat either Direct Shipping ore (DSO) or Run-of-Mine (ROM) have grade >60% Fe. The present practice of beneficiating iron ore fines (<1 mm) comprise combination of two or more processes such as desliming, hydraulic classification, magnetic separation and flotation apart from requirement of grinding depending on liberation characteristics. The HSBD which is predominantly occur as free granular particles, is significantly low in its alumina content. This gives us an opportunity to utilize them by exploring a suitable beneficiation process so that the concentrate produced can be used as a sweetener for alumina rich iron ore/concentrate. Thus, in the present study, an attempt has been made to adopt dry high intensity magnetic separation technique to explore the amenability of the high silica blue dust for beneficiation.

This is a shortened version of the paper ?The Methane-Air Explosion Hazard Within Coal Mine Gobs published in the 2013 volume of SME Transactions (Brune, 2013). This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Evidence from numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners, including the explosion of the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives. The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

A revised and expanded edition of a previous paper** dealing with reactions of calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides with pulverized coal fly ash is presented. Lime-fly ash specimens were cured at constant temperature and subjected to X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, pozzolanic reactivity tests, and microscopical investigations. Bars of limefly ash were subjected to cycles of wetting and drying, and measurements of length change were recorded. A discussion of variations within and among types of lime and types of fly ash is presented. The nature of the pozzolanic reaction is reviewed, particularly as related to compounds which are used up and formed during the aging process. The relationship between the pozzolanic reaction and the resultant physical properties of the mixtures is examined.

Stainless steel swarf is a typical by-product produced from stainless steel processing, which contains a significant level of valuable metals, such as iron, chrome, and nickel. About 1 million tons of stainless steel swarf are generated in China annually, but as mixed with impurities such as Al and Si, stainless steel swarf is not suitable to be directly smelted into stainless steel through refining process. In this study, stainless steel swarf was applied as a strengthening agent during limonitic laterite sintering process. The effects of adding stainless steel swarf on green bed permeability, the yield and quality indexes of the sinters, and the microstructure of the sinters were evaluated systematically. The results showed that the concentrated distribution degree of granules and green bed permeability were improved after adding stainless steel swarf. As the additional amount of stainless steel swarf increased from 0 to 3%, the tumble index and yield of the sinters rose from 50.07 to 54.69% and from 62.04 to 67.35%, respectively. The addition of stainless steel swarf would not change the phase compositions, and had little adverse impact on the metallurgical properties of the limonitic laterite sinters.

With the development of the coal mine regulation regime, the situation of coal mine safety production in China has continued to improve. However, coal mine accidents have not been fundamentally eliminated; constantly learning from historical accidents can make mining work safer. Therefore, to better understand the coal mine accident characteristics, this study analyzes the tendency of coal mine safety accidents from multiple perspectives, among which all accidents after the establishment of the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety in 1999 are the top priority. The results show that strict national policy, technological progress, and reasonable coal prices are conducive to the safe development of mines. On the contrary, high-intensity centralized production will lead to frequent accidents in the peak season of coal production. In addition, the type of coal mine ownership will have an indirect impact on the occurrence of coal mine accidents. The research results not only play a positive role in the prevention and control of coal mine accidents in China but also have reference meanings for the safety production of coal mines in other countries in the world.
