For a variety of reasons, the need for automation of underground mining equipment is growing dramatically, e.g., improved safety and health, availability of labor, deeper mines, and desire for more focused excavation. While there has been tremendous progress made in this direction, much needs to be done to reach the holy grail of an autonomous mining machine. This paper reviews a number of technological developments and presents research and development needs for future development. A report on our current project for the Western Mining Resource Center at CSM is included.

Corrosion has long been identified as a potential risk to the long-term ground support stability due to degradation of internal ground support elements such as rock bolts but also to surface support from mesh, straps, bolt plates, and ancillary support of utilities such as hangers. The emphasis is to understand the corrosion mechanisms on the primary ground support elements and any supplemental steel or arch sets. The water and chemical processes from oxidation(rust), stress corrosion cracking, and even the electrical charge created during these reactions contribute to the corrosion of the steel support elements. The main goals are to mitigate the effects of corrosion and to be able to predict those areas of high water or high sulphide for potential rehab maps. It is also essential to identify and classify the visible corrosion as part of damage mapping and provide bolt testing to those areas of suspected internal damage from corrosion. This is important to get an estimate of the support longevity or expected life before rehab to minimize the overall cost of the operation.

Sulphur dioxide is a versatile gas which has many uses throughout Pulp & Paper, Chemical, specialty Chemical, Mining and other industries. During recent years, S0 2 consumption and distribution patterns have resulted in renewed interests for liquid S0 2 and on site gaseous S02 manufacturing facilities. one relatively new use for S0 2 in the Mining Industry is its use for cyanide detoxification. Our purpose in this paper is to describe the process steps, economics and general technical features of so 2 gas generation using a Jet Type sulphur Burning System.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Project was established in 1975 by the Department of Energy (DOE) under Public Law 193 to develop the necessary technology for safe disposal of radioactive wastes from the defense programs of the U.S. The technology development involves extensive theoretical, numerical, and laboratory programs, as well as construction of the WIPP facility in southeastern New Mexico for in situ testing and waste storage demonstration. If after the demonstration, the facility is found to comply with regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency, then the facility will become a repository for Transuranic (TRU) waste. The underground portion of the facility is 655 m beneath the ground surface in massive natural salt deposits of the Salado formation, as shown in Figure 1.

This discussion deals with the geology o£ the Tennessee-Kentucky ball clay deposits; their mineralogy and chemistry; methods of finding, mining and refining; and makes observations on reserves of and future prospects for these clays. Ball clays appear in ceramic formulas for manufacture of vitreous china sanitary-ware, electrical porcelains, floor and wall tile, dinnerware and artwares(l). This type of clay is used for refractory (2) and abrasive products(3), and as a suspending agent for ceramic glazes(4), engobes(5) and porcelain enamel slips(6). Although some ball clay is imported, probably 85-90 percent of ball clay used in the USA(7) is obtained from deposits in Weakley, Henry and Carroll Counties in Tennessee(8), and in adjacent Graves County, Kentucky(9). The term "ball", as applied to clay, probably derives from former mining practice in England whereby conveniently-sized blocks of clay were cut from moist clay beds by spading(10), The expression "ball" has no other technological significance. ASTM(11) defines ball clay as "a secondary clay, commonly characterized by the presence of organic matter, high plasticity, high dry strength, long vitrification range, and a light color when fired." This, and similar(12) definitions, applies to English ball clays but is not satisfactory for many American ball clays. Geology of the Tennessee-Kentucky Ball Clay Deposits Figure 1 shows that most commercial clay areas of the eastern United States lie near the edge of the Coastal Plain; a skew-shaped configuration of its landward boundary outlines the Mississippi Embayment(13), Near the apex of this basin a broad plain, with a rolling, Bullied topography(14), dips gently westward from the Tennessee River to bluffs at the edge of the Mississippi River flood plain.

Elemental sulfur is founded to be the predominant sulfur-containing species in a leaching residue resulting from ferric chloride leaching, under given conditions, of a chalcopyrite concentrate. The mineralogical study of the leaching residue which consists of 52% elemental sulfur reveals that the sulfur formed at the end of leaching process is in the form of discrete crystal rather than coating film. Flotation has been applied to recover the sulfur successfully using xanthate as a collector. Dispersants arc needed to prevent the mechanical entrapment of silicate and quartz by sulfur. Very high recovery of sulfur with satisfactory grades can be achieved with a relatively simple notation scheme.

This paper presents the details of the Kramer tunnel project in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of GarmischPartenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million (incl. VAT), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for single-tube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). In order to reduce the geological risk for the owner, the escape tunnel was supposed to be completed before the design process for the main tunnel ever began. The exploratory tunnel was awarded to a competitor with an separate contract.

This paper initially was to be on the design, construction and operation of the Lucky Friday mill. However, this subject has been pretty well covered in some of the mining publications in the past few years - specifically Mining Congress Journal for April, 1961 and Mining World for March, 1962- : In order to avoid too much repetition, we decided to present in this paper a comparison of the Lucky Friday mill constructed in 1959, and the Mayflower mill built by us in 1962. During the past three years Hecla Mining Company has constructed two relatively small mills: The Lucky Friday mill at Mullan, Idaho 750 T/day; and the Mayflower mill at Heber, Utah - 450 T/day. These mills were engineered, designed and constructed by Hecla, using principally our own personnel, with very little outside (contractor) labor employed. This paper presents a comparison of some of the interesting features of these mills, and where differences occur, it discusses the reasons for the various differences. It compares such points as the testing program, physical layout of the plant, construction costs, the grinding section, the flotation section, tailings disposal, metallurgy, recovery, grades, operating costs, etc. To help illustrate, and to compare these features, we will project pairs of slides showing each of the two mills. "INTRODUCTION Electrification of the heavily trafficked Manchester to Preston route by Network Rail required the rehabilitation of the Victorian era Farnworth Tunnels to accommodate 21st century high speed trains. Network Rail, J. Murphy and Sons Ltd (JMS) and OTB Engineering Ltd (OTB) collaborated closely to complete these works in close proximity to heritage infrastructure whilst maintaining a rail service on the route. This significant challenge has been mastered by a combination of detailed investigation, complex modelling, robust design, extensive monitoring, ground treatment, secant piling, sprayed concrete, steel arches and segmental lining techniques. Investigation of the “Down” Tunnel found deformation and cracking of the lining and this was reconstructed during 11 weekend possessions. The “Up” Tunnel was filled with low strength concrete and a 9m diameter open face shield was used to construct an 8m diameter segmental lined tunnel during a 23 week blockade whilst traffic was maintained in the “Down” Tunnel. ELECTRIFICATION OF THE RAILWAY The Farnworth Tunnel project is part of the UK wide £1bn Railway Upgrade Plan to provide improvements throughout the rail network which includes the Manchester to Preston route. The project also supports the UK Government commitment to build a “Northern Powerhouse” by improving links that bind northern England together and which will help it release its full potential with a more balanced, healthier economy. The majority of the current UK rail network infrastructure resulted from the rapid growth of the railways in the mid to late 19th century which means that most of the existing tunnels are over 120 years old. Over the centuries the introduction of larger rolling stock has reduced the original clearances provided in tunnels. The electrification of a route requires that any over-line structures provide clearance for Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), new rolling stock and to meet modern standards. As part of Network Rail’s current electrification programme a further 36 tunnels have been identified on routes requiring electrification. Not of all these Victorian structures will require alterations to provide OLE clearance but the condition of the existing tunnels and modern fire / waterproofing requirements may ultimately dictate the need for rehabilitation."

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. Genesis 1:28 "And God blessed them and God said he fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it and have dominion over it." Genesis 2:15 "And the Lord God made man and put him in the garden to dress it and keep it." Depending on one's perspective, these two verses from the Book of Genesis either complement one another or are in conflict. I believe that they are complementary. What they imply is that where there is privilege, there is responsibility. Privilege comes from the fact that the Lord created the heavens and the earth and he placed man on the earth to have dominion over it. The responsibility that accrues to us comes when the Lord also said that we are accountable for how we handle that which he has given us. The very nature of our responsibilities in resource utilization or, more appropriately, resource management, has changed over time as the nation's needs and priorities have changed. Thus, I have attempted to examine, from a historical perspective, how natural resource policy has evolved, where we are now and what may lie ahead.

The Bunker Hill Mine, located in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District at Kellogg, Idaho, has been a major producer of lead-silver-zinc ores since its discovery in 1887. The mine has produced over 29 million tons of ore from some 20 to 25 veins and ore zones, and now covers an area approximately one mile in length and one-half mile in width. The active section of the mine extends from 2500 ft above sea level to 1600 ft below sea level. Production is presently at the rate of about 1700 tons of ore per day. A two-mile adit, the Kellogg Tunnel, at the 2500 elevation, provides access to the main shaft area. Ore is hoisted to the adit level through a 5000-ft, 500-inclined shaft, extending to the lowermost haulage level 1200 ft below sea level. Primary shaft service for men and materials is supplied by three major internal, inclined shafts equipped with double-drum hoists. Present production requires ten levels to serve for mainline track haulage. These range up to 5000 ft in length and are either 200 or 400 vertical feet apart. Also, many intermediate levels exist throughout the mine. The conventional and autoloader mechanized square-set and cut-and-fill mining methods used throughout the mine have been the subject of a recent paper(l). One-third of current production is from vein-type ore bodies which are long distances from main shaft areas. Such veins generally dip about 450, have relatively narrow widths of from 3 to 20 ft, and usually contain less than 500,000 tons of ore. For many years, ore bodies thus situated have been developed by means of a separate inclined, timbered service shaft-raise connecting two or more main haulage levels. These commonly range from 400 to 1000 ft in vertical extent and are equipped with 25 to 50 hp electric, single-drum hoists. Intermediate levels are driven as conventional track drifts at 100-ft vertical intervals between the haulage levels. Ore and waste from the intermediate levels are trammed to orepasses for delivery to the lowermost haulage level servicing an ore body. The final result may be visualized as a number of small mines within a large mine. The problems of high development costs and high total development time, and the large amount and high cost of providing materials handl ing and ore haulage service while producing from this isolated type of stope block, made it desirable to consider totally new approaches in developing and mining a number of similar areas.

Characterization and beneficiation of dry iron ore processing plant reject fines of Khondbond region, India, was investigated. Different characterization techniques viz. size analysis, size-wise chemical and density analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, sinkfloat analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and QEMSCAN were carried out. Based on characterization results, two process flow sheets comprising wet screening followed by conventional gravity concentration and two stage classification with different beneficiation routes were used to recover the iron values from reject fines containing 58.73% Fe, 5.54% Al2O3, and 6.6% SiO2. Finally, suggested flow sheet comprising of two stage classification and advance gravity concentration followed by the combination of grinding, classification, and froth flotation produced iron concentrate of 2.36% Al2O3 with 75.8% yield which can be used in sinter/pellet making.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal's 13.1 km overland conveyor was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 troughed belt type. Cost and performance optimisation during initial design ended up with 5.4m/s belt speed, 1,000mm belt width to convey 1,350tph, and 7mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1,100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30mtpa. Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4200tph satisfactorily.

"Mining is an important part of the economy of Namibia. In 2016, 11.1 percent of the GDP was the result of mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists of an underground mining operation.The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 5.4 to 6.3 Mt (6 to 7 million st) (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu has produced on average about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2015).The Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an openpit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014, the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently, Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village.The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 percent CaF2. This study focuses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged.For solving the task to design the mine, a site visit for data collecting was conducted. Resource estimations were calculated based on existing drill data, and consequently, block models were created. The development of the mine design included the selection of the most suitable mining method, mining technology and mine organization. Moreover, some economic considerations are pointed out, followed by a profitability assessment."

All persons and communities that have experienced strong-motion earthquakes are convinced of the importance and complexity of earthquake problems thatmust be solved in order to reduce the personal hazards and property losses to a reasonable minimum. It is also clear that absolute elimination of all risks is impossible. Reduction of existing hazards and precautionary measures which will minimize chances for disaster can be accomplished by realistic appraisal of the effects of recent earth- quakes on modern structures and installations. Localities that have reason to expect so-called strong- motion earthquakes can anticipate these effects by taking appropriate steps. Valid earthquake information can only be obtained from earthquakes. Each earthquake contributes to the body of knowledge by additional facts and by clarification of previous observations. Rational interpretation of the data followed by practical application of the conclusions can contribute greatly to the safety of persons and property. The general public expects the architectural and engineering profession to accept this obligation and render this service. Most earthquake hazards are man-made and arise from the imperfections of the works of man and his failure to anticipate the consequences when the natural characteristics of his environment are ignored. If it is not given to man to prevent such natural phenomena as earthquakes, it is sometimes within his power to control their destructive effects and to reduce to a minimum the toll of life and human suffering.

Laboratory settling and filtration testing was conducted on wet processed fly ash in order to determine the applicability of conventional dewatering techniques to reduce the moisture content prior to drying. Settling tests showed that acceptable clarity (<1.5 g/l suspended solids) could be achieved after as little as 6 minutes of settling. After settling to a consistency of 40 weight % solids, continuous laboratory vacuum filtration testing produced a cake containing below 20% moisture with throughput exceeding 150 lb/ft2/hr.

"INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

The mining industry is at a crossroads. Currently, there is an estimated $25 billion worth of projects around the world that have been stopped as the consequence of a dispute or disagreement with their communities, the government or some other stakeholder. Anglo American chief executive officer Mark Cutifani is one who sees the mining industry in need of change and on Dec. 12, he gave the keynote address for the launch the Kellogg Innovation Network?s Mining Company of the Future Initiative?s Development Partner Framework (DPF). The launch was held at the Ford Foundation building in New York City. The DPF seeks to inspire and support the mining industry to adopt a new way of thinking and a new approach to how it secures, nurtures and revitalizes its social license to operate. Working with a diverse group of people from faith-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and other stakeholders, Cutifani often had the rather uncomfortable position of representing the mining industry in a room full of people who are far from the industry?s biggest fans.
