Within the technology field generally known as biological heap leaching or percolation leaching, lies a wealth of technological knowhow that is potentially patentable and therefore can form the subject matter of patent applications. An organization often overlooks the potential for generating intellectual capital during its research by dismissing the possibility that what it is working on may be novel and inventive and therefore patentable. The organization labours under the misconception that there is nothing patentable in its work mainly because the novel aspect is overlooked against the general background state of the art or, if identified, is not recognized as having sufficient inventive merit. In the field of biological heap leaching, patents have issued on inventions that extend across a large range of technology, including microbiological inventions-for example a particular strain of microbe used in a heap leach application, electro-mechanical inventions, for example a column simulator that simulates the heap leach environment, and thermodynamic inventions such as methods of generating and maintaining heat in a heap.

This paper describes and sets in context the commercially proven uranium extraction processes. It also discusses some of the technologies that are currently being pursued with the aim of reducing costs and overcoming a number of technical issues that are faced by process designers and operators. In doing so, opportunities for the transfer of extraction technology from other industries/commodities are identified. The key processing areas that are examined include: ?The influence of mineralogy. The type of uranium mineralization and the nature of its association within a particular deposit will have a major impact on process route selection. Uranium minerals are classified according to their influence on extractive metallurgy. As the uranium price has risen in recent times, so opportunities are increasing for the recovery of uranium from less conventional resources such as phosphates and fossil fuels. ?The opportunities for employing techniques aimed at reducing the capital and operating costs of the overall process such as heap leach and beneficiation. Preconcentration by screening, gravity separation and radiometric sorting can potentially reduce the mass flow to the downstream leach and recovery plants. ?Purification or separation of uranium in carbonate systems. While it is possible to directly precipitate uranium from clarified leachate, the presence of impurities such as vanadium, molybdenum and others may dictate that ion exchange or selective precipitation is employed. Advances have been made in other industries in terms of improved ion exchange equipment aimed at reducing resin inventories and hence costs. ?Separation in acid leach systems. Earlier developments included the use of combined SX-IX systems (Eluex or Bufflex) and the introduction of continuous countercurrention exchange (CCIX). Column SX has found a ready application to uranium in view of the rapid extraction kinetics. With the renewed interest in uranium processing, efforts are being redirected towards further development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) as a means of driving down capital and operating costs. ?Extraction in a chloride environment. Australia and Namibia are desert countries where good quality water comes at a cost. However, both have access to saline water from either the ocean or subterranean aquifers. The issues associated with operating a uranium extraction operation in such environments is discussed. ?Extraction from less conventional sources. Recent price increases for U3O8 have resulted in a number of companies examining the recovery of uranium from sources such as fossil fuels and phosphate deposits. Both of these areas were examined in the 1970s and 1980s and a number of approaches were commercialized. The paper reviews the extraction options.

The successful commissioning of the Cerro Verde project in Peru at the end of 2006 marked the culmination of the efforts of many in the industry over many years to have high pressure grinding roll technology recognized and accepted as a legitimate alternative to the conventional approach to large-scale hard rock comminution circuit design. Other hard-rock projects that have recently adopted HPGR include Freeport (Indonesia), Boddington (Australia) and Amplats Potgietersrus (South Africa). With the increasing acceptance of this technology, the need for technical presentations and articles exhorting the industry to adapt has diminished somewhat, and it is considered appropriate now to shift the emphasis to the provision of information for those considering embracing change. This article endeavours to answer frequently asked questions on the subject of high pressure grinding roll technology, with particular reference to its application in the hard rock minerals processing sector.

Geometallurgy - the science of predicting the behaviour of ores along the value chain based on their geological and mineralogical characteristics - has barely moved beyond process minerology studies. These studies typically link process behaviour to the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of pristine or processed ores in a qualitative or semi-quantitative manner. Eventually, a trial-and-error optimisation of the operation is achieved. However, to deliver on its promise, geometallurgy should progress beyond this current approach to a fully quantitative understanding of process behaviour, including the various uncertainties involved, namely predictive geometallurgy. One of the barriers currently hindering this development is the neglect of most ore characterisation data obtained in geometallurgical studies. This is mostly due to the large extent of this information exceeding the capacity of conventional software. To address this challenge, we developed a data mining platform consisting of an SQL database, an R front-end in-house package, and back-ends to interpret data from several analytical instruments. This platform enables the use of the statistical and data mining power of the R open-source environment for any geometallurgical study. Potential applications range from ore characterisation to process understanding and forecasting, and from geostatistical prediction to operational control and optimisation. The scripting abilities of R allow for the: 1) processing of many streams in loops, thus freeing the user from repeating tedious click-and-drop tasks; 2) computation of virtually any derivate or aggregate quantity from the data; 3) distribution of the work among several processor clusters; and 4) keeping of a log file for the calculations done. This contribution presents the building blocks of this platform, and illustrates with several examples its potential to enable predictive geometallurgy. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) in South Africa is administered by the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) for the mining industry, and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) for all other sectors. Thus far, EIA research has focused on the process under the auspices of DEAT but none has focused on the EIA process that has been mandatory in the South African mining industry since 2004. Using the Lee and Colley(Lee et al.13) review package as a basis, a review model specifically tailored to the needs of the mining industry was applied to review the quality of a sample of 20 environmental impact reports (EIRs)approved by the DME. Results reveal that 85% of the EIRs are of a satisfactory quality. Presentational and descriptive components generally achieved higher quality grades than the analytical components such as impact magnitude and alternatives. The results show that in spite of some areas of weakness, and in spite of being conducted in terms of different legislation, EIR quality in the mining sectors appears to conform to the overall standard of quality of EIRs in other sectors in South Africa, and is also on a par with quality abroad. Hence, despite the criticism that DME is usurping the role of DEAT, it is concluded that EIRs of comparable standard are being produced, and that the quality of EIRs in the mining sector do not provide supporting evidence for this criticism. However, EIR quality is only a single aspect of EIA effectiveness, others including action and implementation of EIA proposals and mitigation measures.

The project report is based on vacation work done by the writer at the Khutala Colliery during December/January 2009?2010. The purpose of this report is to explain and describe the design process in a multi-seam mine design for coal extraction at the Khutala Colliery. The multi-seam design will focus on the No. 2 and No. 4 seams as these are the seams that are currently being mined by underground methods at Khutala Colliery. The seam thicknesses and the parting thickness between the seams provide suitable conditions for designing a multi-seam mine design. An investigation into the pillar design aspects is carried out followed by a numerical modelling analysis of various scenarios. This analysis validates the first principles approach provided by multi-seam design guidelines. The design results from the analysis of the selected pillar design indicate sufficient parting for primitive conditions between seams, thus illuminating the need for superimposing in-panel pillars. This multi-seam mine design confirms the potential for the extraction of coal in a new panel. The design indicates that significant amounts of power station coal are present and suitable for extraction by room and pillar mining methods. The panel block indicates 401 625 tonnes of ROM coal. This block has a life of panel that will be mined just over a 4-month period. This 4-month period is assumed to mined at a production rate of 48 000 tonnes per month. Many industries base their decisions on the assaying of tiny analytical sub-samples. The problem is that most of the time several sampling and sub-sampling stages are required before the laboratory provides its ultimate assays using advanced chemical and physical methods of analysis. As long as each sampling and sub-sampling stage is the object of due diligence using the Theory of Sampling it is likely that the integrity of the sought after information has not been altered and the generated database is still capable to fulfil its informative mission. Unfortunately, more often than not, unawareness of the basic properties of heterogeneous materials combined with the unawareness of stringent requirements listed in the theory of sampling, lead to the conclusion that massive discrepancies may be observed between the expensive outcome of a long chain of sampling and analytical custody, and reality. There are no areas that are more vulnerable to such misfortune than sampling and assaying for trace amounts of constituents of interest in the environment, in high purity materials, in precious metals exploration, food chain, chemicals and pharmaceutical products. Without the preventive suggestions of the theory of sampling serious difficulties may arise when making Gaussian approximations or even log-normal manipulations in the subsequent interpretations. A complementary understanding of Poisson processes injected in the theory of sampling may greatly help the practitioner understand structural sampling problems and prevent unfortunate mistakes from being repeated over and over until a crisis is reached. This paper presents an overview of the theoretical, practical and economic difficulties often vastly underestimated in the search for quantifying trace amounts of valuable or unwelcome components.

A number of issues relating to the computational aspects of pillar design are addressed in this paper. The computation of average pillar stress values is important when attempting to establish criteria for pillar design and in the analysis of the stability of tabular pillar layouts. One of the default ?classic? numerical methods that are used to determine pillar stresses is the displacement discontinuity method. In many instances it is not clearly understood that this approach does suffer from some limitations, particularly in relation to the fact that in coarse element simulations, the simulated average pillar stress (APS) can depend on the chosen mesh size. The nature of this error is highlighted in this paper and some strategies are suggested to bound the magnitude of these errors. It is demonstrated as well that the popular linear stiffness approximation to pillar or seam compressibility does appear to allow reasonably accurate estimates of the average pillar stress when either the pillar height is varied or when the seam modulus differs from the host rock modulus. A practical implication of this study is that if the seam modulus is noticeably lower than that of the host rock, such as for coal seams, it is important to use a linear stiffness constitutive model for the pillars rather than a ?rigid? pillar assumption. This added complexity seems unnecessary, however, when simulating hard rock pillars in mines where the seam modulus is very similar to that of the surrounding rock.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. Since AlphaGo defeated the best human player in the game of Go in 2016 - something thought to be an impossible achievement - machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning have caught the attention of scientists, the media and the general public alike. This recent development in machine learning (let us remember that neural networks have been available for decades now) opens new possibilities in the areas of modelling and process control. However, little has been reported in the minerals processing industry about these new possibilities and opportunities. This paper presents and introduces the topic of reinforcement learning and the different platforms that allow its implementation. The paper shows the consequences of using reinforcement learning for the specific area of process control and optimisation. As an example, the authors present the use of reinforcement learning for the control of a SAG mill closed with a pebble crusher using industrial data from an operation. A comparison with advanced model-based process control is provided, showing the benefits and shortcomings of reinforcement learning as a new control and optimisation technique. "The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques and controlled bulk leaching studies. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a sevenelectron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions, which suggests that the sulphur is oxidized to thiosulphate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+ in these systems. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O3 2- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, supporting formation of different sulphur species as proposed for the sulphate and carbonate salts. Scanning electron microscopy and energydispersive spectroscopic analysis of the mineral surface after leaching indicate presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper in the sulphate system, an iron-rich surface layer in the perchlorate solutions, and absence of surface layer build-up in carbonate solutions. XRD analysis of a bulk leach residue from leaching in ammoniaammonium sulphate solutions showed the surface layer to be mostly amorphous (90%). The crystalline content (10%) is composed of 95% polymorphs of anhydrous iron oxide hydroxide FeO(OH). Choice of ammonium salt and the hydrodynamic environment of leaching have been shown to influence the presence or absence of the surface product, as well as its nature. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different routes for hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be followed. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilization of copper (I) and copper(II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. Processing confidence for a bankable feasibility study on a green field heavy mineral deposit is inmost cases achieved only through bulk sample processing. Bulk sample is classified as a large enough concentrate sample that is processed into final products to satisfy market sample demand as well as further processing demands such as smelting. In this case study the demand was to produce 500 tons of heavy mineral concentrate from more than 5 000 tons run-of-mine on are mote location with limited to no infrastructure. The various challenges faced and lessons learned are documented as an outcome of the success of this mission.

This study has investigated the efficacy of the gravity beneficiation method based on gravitation and centrifugal forces for manganese ore. Powdered samples of manganese ores from the Unagad deposit in Mongolia were analysed for their element and mineralogical composition using ICP-MS and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The analysis presented the mineralogical compositions of the ores as hydro goethite, manganese minerals and magnetite, gangue minerals as quartz, albite, orthoclase and microcline of manganese ore. Manganese minerals are white in colour and have micro-veinlet, fine grained-aggregates associated with gangue minerals. The most important manganese minerals are hausmannite, pyrolusite, rhodochrosite, and manganosite. The composite of feed containing 17.31 % Mn and 36.3 % SiO2 was processed in a shaking table. In the experiment, a concentrate assaying 41.37% Mn was obtained from this composite with 65% recovery. In another experiment, f80=0.074 mm particle size ore was used in the MGS concentration test. A concentrate containing 38.34 % Mn with 75.2% recovery was produced in this experiment. The results showed that it is possible to obtain concentrate through gravity processing of manganese ore, which is an economically beneficial process for producing a product of a standard requirement. In engineering design of operators? compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment, and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomic principles within the collective design process ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity beyond expectations.

In South Africa, the Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are unique in that they are the largest platinum group metal deposits in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. Crush pillars are commonly used in this role, where the residual pillar strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the direct measurement of stress within these crush pillars, and describes the stress?strain behaviour of these pillars. These findings indicate that the measured pillar failure stress is too high. The implications of these findings are that roof damage and pillar bursting could occur, and some examples of this type of damage are shown. The paper concludes that this problem could be mitigated if the three dimensional pillar geometry were modified and the pillars were cut smaller.

To improve the climatic environment underground the German coal mining industry has installed refrigerators with a capacity of 300 MW cooling power. One third of this total is accounted for by central refrigeration plants with more than 5 MW capacity. The central refrigeration comprises three stages: mechanical cooling, transport and distribution of chilled water via pipelines and exchange of heat in the air coolers. Of these three stages only the mechanical generation of chilled water has been resolved satisfactorily. Transport (including distribution) and exchange require further technical research. The Mining Institute of the Aachen University of Technology has done extensive studies on this subject, concentrating on controlling the flow of chilled water according to demand in the mine. Additionally, the favourable exchange in the air coolers is taken into account. The studies are based on a model mine which simulates the conditions in deep coal mines in Germany. The simulation program represents firstly the condition of the mine air at the location of the air being cooled, then the heat exchange in the air cooler itself, and finally the transport of the chilled water from the central refrigerator to the consumer. The program also reproduces the seasonal and operational changes in conditions of mine air as well as different air cooler designs. A regulated distribution of chilled water is also suggested. Finally, estimations of costs can be made as an aid for further planning.

Two backfill systems have been developed on West Driefontein, namely the centrifuge dewatered tailings system and the cyclone-classified tailings system. Modifications to the two systems since the publication of the original paper (Close and Klokow, 1985) are discussed in addition to the results obtained. Considerable experience has been gained from the operation of the centrifuge dewatering units as well as the placement of dewatered tailings in a difficult mine environment. The centrifuge dewatered tailings method has proved successful in the extraction of a highly stressed block of ground at No. 5A Sub-vertical Shaft. The utilization of backfill support in this area made it possible to dispose of a high-grade barrier pillar. This pillar was considered necessary prior to the introduction of backfill support. The recovery of the gold from this pillar made the use of dewatered tailings backfill cost- effective, despite high labour and maintenance costs. Current experience with the bagfilling method of placing cyclone- classified tailings indicates that it is viable and requires considerably less capital investment. Although expensive at present, it is envisaged that costs will decrease once cheaper bags and other forms of stope support are used. The placement of backfill in small-diameter sausage-type bags requires no change in mining cycle and allows the backfill to be placed close to the stope face. Both backfill systems are being expanded but preference is to be given to the cyclone-classified tailings system.

The large proportion of gangue minerals present in platinum bearing ores in South Africa provides challenges to the flotation and down stream processes. In order to take effective measures to reduce their recovery in flotation an understanding of the mechanisms and factors influencing their behaviour is needed. Typical gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar, quartz, chromite and talc. Of these, talc is a naturally hydrophobic mineral and although it is present in relatively small quantities, it has a disproportionate effect as it has a strong froth stabilizing effect, increasing the recovery of other gangue minerals by entrainment. Talc recovery is effectively reduced with the addition of polymeric depressants. Although the other gangue minerals are assumed to be hydrophilic and their recovery by entrainment is expected to follow the water recovery, there is some evidence that they may be activated by the typical reagent suites used. Reagents such as copper sulphate, added as an activator, and collectors are used to selectively induce hydrophobicity on the sulphides. It has been shown that some of these gangue minerals can be activated. This research work investigates whether inadvertent copper activation is mineral specific and evaluates the mechanisms and factors affecting the reversal of activation with the addition of the depressants using electrokinetic measurements, adsorption and microflotation tests. Results are presented that show that the selected minerals do respond differently and that the reversal of activation is dependent on mineral type, depressant type, dosage and ionic strength of the electrolyte.

Tornados are the most violent weather events in the world, and we have all seen the forces and phenomena created by tornados in nature. Airgrinder AB has been working with a material treatment technology, which most easily could be described as an artificial tornado. The process consists principally of one air fan providing a high-velocity airstream that enters a mechanical cyclone. When the gas enters the cyclone, an outer vortex is created. This outer vortex rotates next to the cyclone wall, and at the bottom of the cyclone funnel the gas stream is turned and an inner vortex is created. The control of the air flow is tuned by a special device on top of the cyclone. The gas outlet is at the top of the cyclone and the material outlet at the bottom. The material is fed through a feeding device into the air stream channel prior to the inlet into the cyclone. The process is basically an improved grinding and dehydrating system, which is very efficient and environmentally friendly and can even be employed with very sticky materials. Also due to its rotating comminution, the material particles become rounded during grinding, hence more free flowing and easier to handle. MEFOS has already tested more than 30 different applications in the pilot equipment. The materials tested range from metallurgical slags containing 2?3% moisture to sludges with up to70% moisture. This technology has a potentially strong impact on mineral beneficiation, including the drying of sticky fine-grained materials, improved and selective gas scrubbing and the manufacture of free flowing powders.
