This 40-page booklet is entitled 'Down-the-hole drilling with COP drills'.

Ninth International Symposium TECHNIQUES FOR DECISION MAKING IN THE MINERAL INDUSTRY The Symposium which is to be held in Montreal during the week of 14th to 19th June, 1970, follows the Computer Symposium held in Salt Lake City in September, 1969. Kamoto Copper Company is a copper cobalt mining company established in Lualaba Province of Democratic Republic of Congo under a Joint Venture between Glencore PLC and Gecamines (the state-owned mining company). Operations consist of underground and open pit mines, a concentrator producing sulfide concentrate and oxide ores milled slurry, and a hydrometallurgy plant producing copper cathode and cobalt hydroxides from concentrate and ores. The production capacity is 300 k/a of copper cathode and 35 kt/a of cobalt hydroxide. Since Q4 2020, the Luilu hydrometallurgy plant has experienced operational instabilities due to increase in proportion of dolomite in the ore mined and fed to the plant. This was diagnosed by the significant increase in calcium grade in ore and acid consumption, continuous foaming, and overflow of tanks with subsequent adverse impact on equipment availability due to corrosion caused by acidic spills, structure integrity, and safety concerns around the acidic slurry spills. Production was adversely impact due above equipment availability and often throughput restriction to mitigate the foaming and overflows. A high gangue-acid-consuming ore management programme was developed with the aim of mitigating these impacts. The programme included: (i) use of defoamer agent in leach to stop foaming and overflow, (ii) design of a mechanical solution to leach foaming and overflow, and (iii) froth flotation for copper and cobalt minerals separation from dolomite. Only option (i) is presented in this paper. Through laboratory testwork, pilot-plant testing, plant trial, and full plant implementation, Kamoto Copper successfully implemented a defoamer agent (Kemfoam X9980) dosing at leach, resulting in significant reduction in foaming and overflow of leach reactors and countercurrent decantation thickeners. The optimum defoamer dose rate obtained was 20 mg/L. Since then, the Luilu recovered its operational stability, the corrosion of critical equipment ceased, and availability improved as the acidic leach slurry spills ceased. The constraint on throughput due to leach foaming was addressed and the frequency of sliming events in the thickeners was significantly reduced as the foaming on the supernatant surface ceased, with subsequent significant reduction in interfacial crud in solvent extraction.

Then, we are particularly privileged this afternoon to have an Honorary Member with us, the Minister of Mines for Rhodesia, Mr Dillon. You will recall that he honoured us with his company last year. Mr Dillon, we are very appreciative and hope that this is now a standing arrangement. We are also honoured by the presence of some thirteen Presidents, Vice-Presidents, or Chairmen of our sister scientific and technical organizations. I shall rapidly read their names, but they must all feel assured that they are very welcome here today. Written contribution E. Wroth* (Visitor): The technical aspects of the assistance scheme which IS provided for in the Gold Mines Assistance Act, 1968, and certain consequential amendments to the Income Tax Act, 1962, are explained by Dr Krige. The object of this contribution is to explain the working of the Gold Mines Assistance Act (hereafter referred to as the 'Assistance Act') for the benefit of those concerned with the tax and assistance assessments of gold mining companies. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect the Revenue Department's interpretation of the legal provisions involved. 1. MINES WHICH QUALIFY FOR ASSISTANCE 1.1 The assistance scheme is applied on a selective basis. Mines which qualify for assistance are defined in the Assistance Act as 'assisted gold mines'. The requirements for classification as an assisted gold mine are that: (i) the mine be a producing gold mine; (ii) it would be likely to close down within eight years if not assisted; and (iii) with State assistance its life would be appreciably prolonged and there would be a significant increase in production of gold or uranium, or of both gold and uranium. 1.2 A mine is only considered for classification as an assisted gold mine on application. Such applications must be made to the Mining Leases Board through the Government Mining Engineer. Classification of a mine as an assisted gold mine is at the discretion of the Minister of Mines who acts in consultation with the Minister of Finance and has regard to the recommendations of the Mining Leases Board. 1.3 The Minister of Mines will impose conditions subject to which a mine is to be classified as an assisted gold mine. The most important will be that the mine must immediately lower its operating pay limit, as normally calculated, by a percentage fixed by the Mining Leases Board and conduct its future mining operations in accordance with the average grade of its ore reserves determined on the basis of such lower pay limit. l.4 The Minister will fix the date as from which classification as an assisted gold mine is to be effective. So long as the mine has operated on the basis of the lowered pay limit for at least three months during the particular year of assessment, he would normally fix the effective date as the first day of the year of assessment.

ABSTRACT: The Urft dam, the Diemel dam and the Eder dam are three old masonry damslocated in Germany. The paper describes the rehabilitation measures and the correspondingstability analyses carried out to adjust the dams to today's standards. Remedial works such as theexcavation of inspection galleries, the installation of a grout curtain with a downstream drainagescreen as well as the installation of pre-stressed permanent tendons were carried out. In all threecases the stability of the upgraded dam could be proven on the basis of finite element analyses. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Urft-, Diemel- und Edertalsperre sind drei alte deutscheSchwergewichtsmauern aus Bruchsteinmauerwerk. Im Beitrag werden Instandsetzungsmaß-nahmen und Standsicherheitsnachweise beschrieben, die erforderlich waren, um die Staumauernan den heutigen Stand der Technik anzupassen. Hierzu wurden Kontrollgänge aufgefahren,Dichtungsschleier mit luftseitiger Dränage sowie vorgespannte Daueranker hergestellt. In allendrei Fällen konnte unter Berücksichtigung der Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen die Standsicherheit derMauer auf der Grundlage von Berechnungen nach der Methode der finiten Elemente nachgewiesenwerden. RÉSUMÉ: Les barrages de Urft, Diemel et Eder sont trois barrages-poids vieux allemandsconstruit de maçonnerie de moellon. Dans cet article, opérations de remise en état et preuves destabilité sont décrits, qui étaient nécessaires pour adapter les barrages à l'état de la techniqueactuelle. À cet effet, des galeries de contrôle étaient creusés, voiles d'étanchéité avec des drains àla face aval et tirants précontraints permanents étaient fabriqués. Dans tous les trois cas, tenantcompte des opérations de remise en état, la stabilité de la barrage pouvait être prouvée à partir decalculs selon la méthode des éléments finis.

Electrowinning is one of the nickel recovery processes from solutions obtained from the leaching of nickel sources. Every year significant amounts of nickel products are used in various industrial processes and daily life, such as catalysts or batteries, which are a valuable source of nickel for recovery. Nickel purity is also very important in the electrowinning process, because the amount of impurities in nickel such as sulphur, if greater than 100 ppm, make it unsuitable for use in catalysts and plating. Because sulfur is intrinsic to the sulphate electrowinning system, we needed to investigate parameters that can affect the quality and purity of nickel. In this regard, experiments were performed in static and circulating electrowinning processes. A monitoring and circulation system was designed and built to measure voltage, current and temperature as well as to circulate the solution in the system at a specified rate. It was then observed that nickel ion concentration, pH, using the circulation system and additives, were factors affecting the purity and quality of nickel, and in the best case the amount of sulphur in nickel was below 100 ppm. "A hierarchical four-character code designed for geological and allied data may be used to log exploration drill-holes and store the information on magnetic media. The code is intended for use in semi-free format and permits the collection of as much, or as little, data as the geologist may require for the purpose in hand. A method of data storage by variable length records is discussed.Information may be retrieved by means of a simple enquiry language. Optional output facilities could allow the retrieval of data in a form suitable for direct input to a contouring package. The enquiry parameters and interrogation program can thus provide the interface between the data bank and associated application systems."

A mechanistic description of axial segregation in rotating drum flows remains an open question. Consequently, optimal mixing of grinding balls and rocks for efficient breakage, maximum production of fines, and slurry transport is seldom achieved. Experimental and numerical studies of granular mixtures in rotating drums identify alternating axial bands that eventually coarsen in the long-term limit. Most models of axial segregation are limited to binary mixtures and cannot always predict the logarithmic coarsening effects observed experimentally. A key missing factor is a robust description of the axial free surface profile that is valid across a wide range of flow regimes. We present a practical model of the axial free surface profile by linking it to readily-derived geometric features of the cross-sectional S-shaped free surface profile. A parametric study shows good agreement with experimental measurements reported in the literature and heuristically valid trends.

The results of prospecting operations involving geological data and a large number of geochemical determinations of the metal content of soil samples are plotted and evaluated by computer. Anomalous areas are identified in each type of environment by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. The anomalies are plotted to permit correlation with geographical or geological features. Ranking of prospecting targets is made using geographic pattern, geology, absolute value and metal ratios. Three short case histories are presented.

"Engineering studies by Selection Trust, Limited, initially in connection with the development of a copper and nickel deposit for Bamangwato Concessions, Limited, and subsequently for several other clients, have required a large number of metallurgical design calculations. The flash smelting process, developed by Outokumpu Oy in Finland, has been selected as the most suitable method for these projects and the computer programs described in this paper have been developed to facilitate the computation.The data required by the programs arc the chemical and mineralogical analyses of the concentrate, gangue and flux materials and the specification of possible fuels. The required grade of furnace matte is set as the main design parameter and the programs calculate detailed heat and material balances for the smelting process."

The size of the particle plays an important role in the flotation of minerals. Comminution allows the release of valuable species and their subsequent recovery. Then, the degree of concentration and recovery will depend on the size of the particle. In this work, we investigated the flotation of coarse particles (-850 +150 μm) of copper ores when using the fluidized-bed separator (HydroFloat® cell) and compared it with the process of conventional flotation with medium size particle (-150 μm) (Metso cell) using seawater. The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 25th August, 1971, at 4.15 p.m. Mr V. C. Robinson (President) was in the Chair. There were also present fifty one Fellows, twenty one Members, two Associates, two Students and fourteen Visitors, making a total of ninety one. Dry deep screening is an important method of classifying moist fine mineral. The rigid-flexible coupled elastic screening technology can simultaneously solve the problem of traditional screen surface plugging and the low service life of a screen surface in the process of deep screening. In this paper, two kinds of rigid-flexible coupled elastic screen surfaces were introduced. The structural characteristics of a screen surface were studied. The mechanism of a rigid flexible coupled elastic screen surface to overcome hole blockage was revealed. Finally, 3 mm and 6 mm screening experiments were carried out. When the external moisture content was below 12.79% for the 6 mm dry screening experiment of elastic rod screen surface, the screening efficiency was above 81%. When the external moisture content was below 11.31% for the 3 mm dry screening experiment of elastic screen surface based on ball hitting, the screening efficiency was above 83%. Uncertainties in the forecasting of the volume of groundwater likely to enter underground workings present difficulties for mine management in planning and costing the water-related activities of mining. This paper describes a technique that was developed to assess future inflows into a gold mine in the Orange Free State. The approach employed was based on the interactive operation of two separate computer models: a regional-flow model and an inflow model. As a first stage, a regional finite-element model of groundwater flow was set up and calibrated. Predictive runs were made to establish the influence of mining on the water levels from base-line conditions. This step was necessary since observations of the regional water levels were sparse. The predicted water levels were transferred to the inflow model, and the future flowrates were calculated. Both models were calibrated by trial and error until a satisfactory match was obtained between historical records and the values predicted by modeling. In this way, an improved monitoring system to record regional water levels and pressure heads within a mine was established. By the use of information, the initial model predictions can be refined as mining progresses. The models used are based on a non-linear relationship between the area mined and the inflows. A phased behaviour in the rates of inflow increase was noted. In conclusion, the modeling approach can provide mine management with guidelines for dewatering requirements. The confidence levels depend upon the records that have been collected during the mine's history.

The present study focuses on utilising the electrocoagulation (EC) process for the treatment of process water generated in an iron ore beneficiation plant for safe discharge and reuse. Removal of heavy metals like Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Pb which was found in higher concentration along with some other impurities exceeding the permissible and discharge limit were attempted. The influence of different electrode material, current density, inter-electrode distance, and solution conductivity was explored for effective removal of the metal ions. Experimental results infer that almost 99.95% Fe, 97.77% Cr, 73.44% Cu, 99.34% Pb and 88.69% Mn was removed using aluminum electrodes at monopolar mode at a current density of 68.50 A/m2, inter-electrode distance of 1 cm and solution conductivity of 1.033mS after 60 min of EC. In addition, removal of other toxins like TDS, turbidity, salinity and conductivity etc. was also assessed during the process. Removal of such heavy metal ions by EC was found to follow 1st order kinetics with electric energy consumption of 3.93 kWh/m3, electrode consumption of 0.1191 kg/m3 and operating cost of 0.6115 US$/m3 respectively. The BGRIMM process mineralogy analyser (BPMA) is a new automated mineralogy software platform developed in China. This system consists of the BPMA software platform, controlling a combination of commercially available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS). The BPMA software controls SEM and EDS through their application programming interfaces, to form an auto-SEM and EDS system that automatically acquires BSE images and X-ray spectra, respectively, and classifies minerals by spectrum-matching. After automated measurement and mineral identification, various quantitative process mineralogical data (e.g., mineral composition, mineral abundance, mineral liberation and intergrowth relationships, mineral associations, particle and grain sizes, particle density distributions, calculated assay, elemental deportments, mineral grade recovery and elemental grade recovery, etc.) would be calculated quickly, accurately and automatically. The BPMA could be used for ore characterisation as a new advanced automated mineralogy technology. The removal of calcium from the retentates of reverse osmosis (RO) treated minewater is desirable since it allows the recovery of both additional potable water (through RO) and higher-purity salts (in downstream processing). This, in turn, reduces the need for costly and unsustainable evaporation ponds and enhances the economics and operability of potential zero-liquid discharge downstream processes, e.g. evaporative-, cooling- and eutectic freeze-crystallisation. For this study, a multi-component retentate high in sodium content was considered, typical of those emanating from minewater reclamation plants in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Four technologies were evaluated to remove calcium: gypsum precipitation by addition of lime; calcium carbonate precipitation by addition of soda-ash; heating crystallisation of calcium sulphate anhydrite; and cooling crystallisation of gypsum. Full processes were developed and simulated using electrolyte thermodynamics. Using the results of these simulations, capital- and operating costs, as well as revenues were calculated and used in economic comparisons of the processes. Sensitivities to key purchasing and selling prices were also investigated to understand the impact of changes in these variables. For the case of a low magnesium-to-sodium ratio in the feed, gypsum precipitation through lime addition was found to have the lowest operating and total annualised costs; but, if revenue could be derived from the sale of sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate precipitation through soda-ash addition was favoured.
