In the upper part of the planned location of the portal of a highway tunnel, there was a steep rock cliff with several unstable rock blocks. It seemed that the risk of those rock blocks to fall was very high. The cut-out to stabilize the rock cliff was monitored with various measuring instruments to prevent the sudden fall of the rock blocks. This paper discusses the measurement of acoustic emission and interpretation of its result during excavation of the rock cliff. We calculated displacements by integrating the accelerogram twice in terms of time, and demonstrated that slight displacements can be calculated from the measured AEs. Dans la partie supérieure de l’emplacement prévu pour le portail d’un tunnel autoroutier, il y avait un escarpement rocheux raide avec plusieurs blocs rocheux instables. Le risque de chute de ces blocs semblait très élevé. Lors de la coupe pour stabiliser l’escarpement rocheux, le suivi a été effectué avec différents instruments de mesure pour éviter la chute brutale des blocs rocheux. Cette thèse présente les mesures d’émission acoustique (EA) et l’interprétation de leurs résultats pendant l’excavation de l’escarpement rocheux. Nous avons calculé des déplacements en intégrant l’accélérogramme deux fois par rapport au temps, et montré que de petits déplacements sont calculables à partir des EA mesurées. Im oberen Teil des geplanten Ortes des Stollenmundes eines Autobahntunnels gab es einen steilen Felsen mit mehreren instabilen Felsenblöcken. Die Gefahr schien sehr groß zu sein, dass diese Felsenblöcke einstürzen können. Beim Abbau um die Stabilisierung des Felsens wurde das Monitoring mit verschiedenen Messinstrumenten zusammengestellt, um den plötzlichen Verfall der Felsenblöcke zu verhindern. Das vorliegende Papier diskutiert die Akustische Emission und die Auslegung deren Ergebnisse während des Abbaus des Felsens. Wir berechneten die Verschiebungen durch zweimalige Integrierung der Accelerogrammen in Bezug auf die Zeit. Die dargestellten kleinen Verschiebungen können aus den gemessten akustischen Emissionen berechnet werden.

In the mineral processing industry, Ni-Cu-Fe-S converter matte is leached in order to remove base metals from a concentrate containing platinum group metals (PGMs). This paper investigates the atmospheric leaching process, in order to develop a better understanding of the leaching behaviour of the base metals; in particular Cu, Fe, Ni, and the PGMs in particular Ru and Ir with key process variables, acid concentration, copper concentration under oxidative leaching conditions. Higher initial acid concentration resulted in a higher copper, iron and nickel extractions, as well as higher leaching rates together with faster Cu, Ru, Ir precipitation occurring. On the other hand, a higher initial copper concentration resulted in more nickel but less iron being extracted. Keywords: PGM, converter matte, leaching, precipitation

Determining the anisotropy of rocks has in the past been difficult and rarely attempted in engineering practice. Here we have developed a new practical methodology for measuring orthotropic anisotropy that requires only one hollow cylinder specimen to determine the anisotropy of a set, even when the directions of the anisotropic axes are unknown. Autrefois, la détermination de l’anisotropie des roches était difficile et elle a été rarement essayée dans la pratique de l’ingénierie. Voilà c’est nous qui avons mis au point une nouvelle méthodologie pratique pour mesurer le coefficient de conductibilité thermique de l’anisotropie qui exige un seul spécimen du cylindre creux afin de déterminer l’anisotropie d’une série, même si les directions des axes anisotropiques sont inconnues. Früher war die Bestimmung der Anisotropie von Gesteinen ein schwieriges Verfahren, das in der technologischen Praxis nur selten in Angriff genommen wurde. Wir haben hier eine neue praktische Methodik zur Messung der orthotropen Anisotropie entwickelt, bei der nur ein Hohlzylinder an Gesteinsproben benötigt wird, um die Anisotropie einer Reihe von Steinen zu bestimmen, selbst wenn die Richtungen der Anisotropieachsen unbekannt sind.

Definition of mineral resources and reserves forms the basis for effective mine planning and reliable public reporting of mineral assets. Historically the mineral resource and reserves declaration process has been the domain of the geology and surveying disciplines, with the declaration of the reserves by the surveyor being based on the application of modifying factors to the declared resources available for mining. As part of an ongoing process to improve efficiency, reliability, and reproducibility of results, this approach has been revised and enhanced through the introduction of a revised process and reconciliation tools. The revised approach to reserve definition is based on the definition of scheduled resources, at an appropriate confidence estimate in the context of an approved business plan, over the anticipated life of the mineral asset being applied to define reserves. This planning and scheduling is developed, during the annual business planning process, by the mine planning department using tools such as CADSMine?. The scheduled area together with the application of revised modifying factors is tabulated in the BME (basic mine equation) and reflects the mine production plan over time. Simplification of the modifying factors to dilution and losses underpins the simple yet robust approach to improved definition of reserves in this process and in the basic resource to reserve equation (BR2RE). Dilution intrinsically affects grade but not metal content, whereas the losses reflect both the efficiency of mining and planning and are reflected in metal losses, area losses, or both. Reconciliation of the derived ?resource converted to reserve? area, (which is based on the business plan from CADSMine?), versus the ?resource available for mining?, (which is derived from Datamine?), underpins the robustness and auditability of the reserves declaration. This R&R accounting and reconciliation approach is transparent and facilitates interrogation of the logic and rationale of long-term business planning and project strategy. These numbers are processed and reported in the logic of the basic resource equation (BRE), which also addresses aspects such as white areas (future and historic), tail management, and partial extraction (non-scheduled pillars, etc.) in compliance with SAMREC definitions. Areas that do not have the necessary confidence and data support to be declared as resources find their space as pre-resource (outside the domain of public reporting), outlining existing potential for future extraction and reporting. Use of the BRE leads ultimately to a complete, refined accounting and reconciliation-oriented approach for all production entities. The revised resource and reserve process includes the discipline of mine planning as intrinsic to the definition and declaration of resources and reserves. Subsequent to the change in process, the resources and reserves have truly become the domain of the mineral resource management discipline. This paper defines the logic of the basic resource equations and outlines their application in the definition and reconciliation of mineral resources and reserves at Anglo American Platinum Limited.

Mrazovka tunnel was excavated under one building whose subsurface space was not possible to reinforce against additional settlements induced by digging. In the presented contribution the risk analysis, warning levels and results of deformation measurements are described. Lespace souterrain d‘un des bâtiments sous lequel le tunnel Mrazovka a été creusé n‘a pu être renforcée contre l‘affaissement supplémentaire provoqué par l‘emplacement du tunnel. Le matériel présenté décrit l‘analyse des risques, le niveau des limites et les résultats des mesures des déformations. Der Untergrund eines der Gebäude, unter dem der Tunnel "Mrazovka" ausgeschachtet wurde, war es nicht möglich, gegen nachträgliches Setzen zu versteifen, hervorgerufen durch die Untertunnelung. Im vorliegenden Beitrag sind Gefahrenanalyse, Grenzwerte und Ergebnisse von Deformationsmessungen beschrieben.

Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X-ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

Grade Engineering® is a term trademarked by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and includes five key levers for upgrading ores and rejecting waste prior to expensive downstream comminution and mineral processing. These five levers include natural deportment, induced deportment, bulk sorting, particle sorting and gravity separation. Over the past ten years, CRC ORE has progressed a range of technologies that exploit these levers from laboratory proof of concept through to large scale demonstration and validation. This paper details the work carried out by CRC ORE and Curtin University for assessing the amenability of an ore for its natural deportment and particle sorting attributes in an Integrated Screening and Particle Sorting (ISPS) Grade Engineering® process. ISPS is seen as a preferred method for Grade Engineering® as compared to individually operated unit operations as the benefits of each can be complementary. Furthermore, it is suggested that integrating the two levers has two important impacts: 1. Firstly, there is a risk that isolated particle sorting test results will be misinterpreted as being representative of the full sample without considering the mass balance impact of high-grade material that might have been lost in the fines fraction. This fine fraction will not be detected through the particle sorter. 2. Secondly, and potentially of more valuable impact, is that the opportunity may exist to upgrade the feed first through determining if there is a concentration of high grade to the fine (or coarse) fraction which can be separated through screening. Undertaking screening in the preparation stage of the particle sorting process will enable analysis and separation of the fine or coarse fractions of a rock mass. The result of this study provides the mining industry with an independent framework for undertaking an Order of Magnitude (ISPS) Grade Engineering® assessment on a range of constituent ore types. Pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS) and galena (PbS) generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when placed in water, with pyrite generating the most amount of H2O2. The order of these minerals for generating H2O2 in water is: pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. In previous research, the methods of generation of H2O2 in the grinding mill were studied. In this study, data from experiments were included by using MODDE 9 software for six parameters composed of water, grinding media, particle size; adding collector to the grinding, and adding depressant and pH. Finally the optimal condition was achieved. According to the results, most of the recovery is related to the particle 75 μ size and when using processed water, adding 100% collector and without depressant and pH 10. The most recovery of lead in the case of the use of fresh water is in the case of 100% collector, without depressant, pH 10 and 150 μ particle size. Maximum recovery in fraction size 45 μ in the case of water process is 100% collector, without depressant and pH 10. Maximum depressant of pyrite will be the fraction size 75 μ, distilled water, without collector, 100 depressant. Keywords: Sulfide mineral, hydrogen peroxide, flotation, oxidation

This paper presents the lessons learnt during the transition from an open pit method to a sub-level open stoping method at the Koidu Limited kimberlite pipe. These learnings may assist other mines with planning, both from a practical implementation perspective (layout, charging up challenges), and a method for estimating potential dilution and stability challenges associated with the interaction between the surface and underground excavations. Predictive geotechnical stability modelling was successfully applied to highlight potential failure zones, which allowed modification and enhancement of the mining layouts and quantification of the potential dilution of the kimberlite from indicative instabilities.

ABSTRACT: When considering the rock stress component of rock mechanics design, the basic procedure is to consider the pre-existing stress-state in the rock mass and then estimate the disturbance to this stress state as a result of engineering excavation. Failure criteria are applied to the final stress state to establish whether failure will occur. However, during the evolution of the stress state, the failure locus may be reached before the anticipated failure state and, in this case, failure will occur unexpectedly. This indicates that the complete stress path (defined as the variations in magnitudes and orientations of the stress tensor components resulting from engineering-induced or natural changes) must be considered. We list a set of stress path principles with their corollaries and then introduce a new and powerful method for simultaneously illustrating changes in the six independent components of the stress tensor. This method plots the magnitudes of the principal stresses above their orientational paths on the hemispherical projection, to provide a three-dimensional stress path locus for each of the three principal stress components. In connection with this presentational device, we illustrate a number of concepts associated with the stress path in rock engineering. For example, we show how the minor principal stress approaches zero at an unsupported excavation face, the interchange of the trajectories of two principal stresses when their magnitudes become equal, and the influence of the bounds on the principal stresses given by strength criteria. RESUME: Si on s’interesse à la composante “contrainte” lors d’un dimensionnement en mécanique des roches, la méthode de base consiste à considérer l’état de contrainte pré-existant dans le massif rocheux, puis d’estimer la perturbation à cet état générée par l’excavation projetée. Des critères de rupture sont appliqués à l’état de contrainte final pour établir si une rupture va se produire. Cependant, lors de l’évolution de l’état de contrainte, la surface critique peut être atteinte ce qui provoquera une rupture anticipée et, dans ce cas, cette dernière sera inattendue. Cela indique que le chemin de contrainte complet (défini par les variations de l’intensité et de l’orientation des composantes du tenseur des contraintes liées à des causes anthropiques ou naturelles) doit être pris en compte. Nous présentons un ensemble de règles pour les chemins de contraintes ainsi que leurs corollaires et, ensuite, nous introduisons une méthode, nouvelle et puissante, pour présenter simultannement les changements des six composantes du tenseur des contraintes. Cette méthode consiste à tracer l’intensité des contraintes principales sur le chemin d’orientation des contraintes à l’aide d’une projection hémisphérique afin d’obtenir le lieu, en trois dimensions, de chaque contrainte principale. En relation avec cet outil de représentation, nous illustrons certains concepts associés au chemin de contrainte en ingénierie au rocher. Par exemple, nous montrons comment la contrainte mineure tend vers zero à la surface d’une excavation sans soutenement, le changement de direction des deux contraintes principales quand leur intensité deviennent égales, et l’influence des conditions aux limites sur les contraintes fournies par un critère de rupture. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei ingenieurmassigen Taetigkeiten in Felsgesteinen ist es noetig die ungestoerten Gesteins Stress Componenten, die vor einem anthropogen Eingriff im Gestein vorhanden waren, zu kennen und erst dann Vorhersagen ueber Stoerung des Stress Zustandes, der durch einen ingenieurmaessigen Eingriff hervorgerufen wird, herzuleiten. Kriterien fuer das Versagen werden im letzten Stadium, des Stress Zustandes angewendet, um zu erfahren ob ein Versagen wohl eintreten wird. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass waehrend des Stress Aufbaus ein oertliches Versagen eintreten kann, welches vor dem eigentlichen, erwarteten Versagens Zustand auftritt. Diese Moeglichkeit weist darauf hin, dass der gesammte “Stress Path” (definiert durch die Variationen der Stress Tensor Komponenten in Richtung und Groesse, hervorgerufen durch ingenieurmaessig hervorgerufene oder natuerlich Vorgaenge) betrachtet werden muss. Wir fuehren eine Liste der “Stress Path” Prinzipien auf und stellen dann eine neue und wirksame Methode zur gleichzeitigen Darstellung der sechs unabhaegigen Komponenten des Stress Tensors vor. Diese Methode stellt die Groesse der “Principal Stresses” in Abhaengigkeit von ihrem rauemlichen Weg auf einer hemispherischen Projektion dar und erlaubt hiermit eine drei dimensionale Darstellung fuer jeden Ort des “Stress Path’s” in die drei Haupt Stress Komponenten. Im Zusammenhang mit der hier gegebenen Darstellungsart, verdeutlichen wir eine Reihe von Konzepten in der Felsmechanik. Wir zeigen zum Beispiel, wie der “Minor Principal Stress” Null zustrebt an einer Wand von einer nicht abgestuetzten Ausschachtung, den Austausch von Trajektorien zweier “Principal Stresses” wenn ihre Groessen sich gleichen, und den Einfluss der Groesse von “Principal Stresses” bei gegebenen Kriterien des Festgkeits Versagens.

Automated mineralogical analysis of platinum group minerals (PGM), using the mineral liberation analyser, provides information used to understand flotation efficiency, primarily from a PGM liberation and association standpoint. To date, however, there is no consistent understanding regarding PGM speciation and its impact on floatability. Previous studies of PGM from UG2 ores concluded that a larger dataset is needed from which the various parameters can be modelled. Parameters on telluride, arsenide, sulfurarsenide and alloy species need to be integrated to fully understand the impact of PGM speciation on flotation, and for this, ores other than PGE-sulfide-rich UG2 must be assessed. Flotation rougher rate tests were performed on feed samples from two Platreef ores to determine the flotation response of individual liberated PGM species. This was achieved through automated mineralogical analysis of feed, rougher concentrates and tails. Based on 1529 liberated PGM grains assessed over the circuit for two Platreef ores, preliminary results show that PGM speciation, species grain size and competition from gangue appear to influence floatability in an ‘optimised’ laboratory environment. Tailings management aims to dispose of tailings at the minimum cost consistent with meeting or exceeding imposed standards, including legislative obligations. This simple business objective requires managing the tailings storage facility (TSF) risks associated with surface water, groundwater, dust, sustainable closure, and potential catastrophic failure. The individual nature of every orebody and specific site topography ensures that no one size fits all. It has been suggested that paste and thickened tailings (P&TT) provides the ability to tailor the production and transportation of tailings to suit the deposition site, rather than the traditional approach of accepting that the deposition site has to accommodate tailings of high variability. While the traditional approach can be made to work, it is directly linked to the catastrophic failures of tailings impoundments, where large volumes of decant water have triggered failures due to overtopping, piping or slope instability, or saturated tailings have simply liquefied. P&TT offers an ability to mitigate these risks, and when implemented into new projects with variable tailings streams there are significant benefits to be realized. This paper identifies the interdependencies between the various tailings disposal processes, such as thickening, pumping, and deposition. It demonstrates that there are benefits in taking a more integrated approach to the design and operation of tailings disposal facilities. A collaborative industry project to tackle this challenge is described.

The diamond industry is no newcomer to High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) as it has used the technology for more than 20 years, predominantly in secondary crushing and recrushing roles. In fact it could be argued that the diamond industry has led the way for the wider minerals industry to consider its application. In existing conventional secondary cone crushing applications, large valuable diamonds are" won" through meticulously managing the recovery process within defined particle size ranges. Conventional crushers operate with relatively large closed side settings, but have the potential to damage diamonds by making direct contact with the sides of the crusher. Cone crushers also result in steep product size distributions that run a high risk of losing many of the smaller, unliberated but more abundant diamonds from the rock. This current comminution paradigm of particle size reduction management results in recrushing processing applications or plants where HPGRs are often used.

A progressive karst formation and its influence upon engineered structures in the ‘phil-karst’ rock mass draw a tunnel engineer’s special attention to a long-term stability and the maintenance issues. Karst sinkholes of any size beneath the railway bed cause train wrecks or long interruptions in train traffic during rehabilitation work. The collapse of cave roof, called a ‘doline’, is in general connected to the cave by the gradual dissolving of the rock, developing into subsidence and sink-holes. The principal conclusions obtained from the field experiments are as follows: It is found that the development of karst cavity shows a relationship with a structural geological line and it is necessary to define the dominant directions of joint and geological layer (formation). The relation-ship between the water flow and joint direction can be used as an indicator of cavity presence in their direction. In addition the direction of in-situ stress can play a role in the development of karst cavities. A risk map of karst scenario is produced for the tunnel supporting systems with rock type classifications in water-soluble karstic rock mass. Eine fortschrittliche Karst-Formung und sein Einfluß auf angelegten Strukturen in der Phil-Karst-Felsenmasse wecken einem Tunnelingenieur eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit zu einer langfristigen Stabilität und der Wartungsausgaben auf. Karstensinkhöhlen in irgendeinen Größen unter dem Eisenbahnbett sind die Ursache der Zugeszerstörung oder der langen Unterbrechungen in Zugverkehr während Rehabilitationsarbeit. Der Zusammenbruch von Höhlendach, d.h. ein “doline”, ist im allgemeinen an die Höhle, die durch das allmähliche Auflösen des Felsen zu entstehen ist und sich in die Subsidence und Sinkhöhlen entwickeln, angeschlossen. Die Hauptschlüsse, die von Feldenprüfungen erhalten wurden, sind folgendermaßen: es wird gefunden, daß die Entwicklung von Karstenhöhlung eine Beziehung mit einer strukturellen geologischen Linie zeigt und es notwendig ist, die vorherrschenden Richtungen von Gelenk und geologischer Schicht (die Formung) zu definieren. Die Beziehung zwischen dem Wasserablauf und der gemeinschaftlichen Richtung kann als ein Anzeiger von Höhlungsanwesenheit in ihrer Richtung benutzt werden. Zusätzlich kann die Richtung von In-Situ-Spannung eine Rolle in der Entwicklung der Karstenhöhlungen spielen. Für das Tunnelunterstützungssystem, welches mit Felsentypenklassifizierungen in wasserlöslicher Karstic-Felsenmasse, ist eine Risikokarte von Karstenszenar hergestellt. Une formation progressive de karst et son influence sur les structures tracées dans la masse de roche "phil-karst" retiennent l'attention particulière des ingénieurs de tunnel aux problèmes de la stabilité à long terme et du maintien. Les creux de karst de toute la taille sous le chemin de fer causent les accidents de trains ou de longues interruptions pendant le travail de réhabilitaion. L'effondrement du plafond de caverne qui s'appelle "doline" s'est, en général, connecté à la caverne par dissolution progressive de la roche, en devenant l'affaissement et les creux. Les conclusions importantes venant des experimentations sur le terrain sont suivants: d'abord, le développement de la cavité de karst montre le rapport avec la ligne géologique de la structure et il est nécessaire de définir les directions dominantes du joint et la couche(formation) géologique. La relation entre l'écoulement de l'eau et la direction du joint peut être utilisé comme un indicateur de la présence de la cavité dans leur direction. De plus, la direction sur place peut contribuer au développement des cavités de karst. Le plan risqué de karst s'est produit pour le système d'appui du tunnel avec les classifications du type de roche dans la masse de roche karstique qui est soluble dans l'eau.

ABSTRACT Durability tests and evaluation of sub-zero temperature effects to some argillaceous clastic rocks were carried out. Welded tuff, limestone, sandstone and schist samples collected from different parts of Japan were tested and results are presented. Schist and dolomite from Ganesh Himal area along the higher Himalayas of Nepal were also tested, and the results are compared. The slaking tests were performed on all samples in pure water. The results reveal that the slaking index of schist from Japan is lower than that of schist from Nepal. Regarding carbonate rocks, the slaking index of limestone from Japan is higher than that of dolomite from Nepal. A tendency of decrease in slake durability with an increase in porosity is also observed. Freezing and thawing experiments conducted on welded tuff and schist reveal that crack initiates earlier but extends slower in schist than in welded tuff. It is also observed from the freeze-thaw experiment that the welded tuff deteriorates and wears faster than the schist. However, sandstone remains relatively intact for a long run of freeze-thaw cycles. Zusammenfassung Beständigkeitstests sowie die Bewertung der Auswirkungen von Minusgraden auf Tonschiefer Trümmergestein wurden durchgeführt. Dabei wurden geschweißter Tuff, Kalkstein, Sandstein und Schiefer aus verschiedenen Gebieten Japans sowie Schiefer und Dolomitgestein aus dem Ganesh Himal Gebiet, dem höheren Himalaya Nepals, untersucht und die Resultate verglichen. Für alle diese Gesteine wurden Slaking-Tests in reinem Wasser vorgenommen. Die Resultate zeigen, dass das Slaking von Schiefer aus Japan höher als das von Schiefer aus Nepal war, wohingegen bei kalkhaltigem Gestein das Slaking von Kalkstein aus Japan niedriger als das von Dolomitgestein aus Nepal ausfiel. Es wurde dabei auch eine Tendenz zur Löschbeständigkeitsverringerung bei gleichzeitig erhöhter Porosität beobachtet. Gefrier- und Tautests an geschweißtem Tuff und japanischem Schiefer zeigten, dass Risse in Schiefer schneller auftraten, aber sich langsamer ausweiteten als in geschweißtem Tuff. Bei Gefrier- und Tautests wurde ebenfalls beobachtet, dass geschweißter Tuff schneller verfällt und verschleißt als Schiefer. Les rocs d’origine volcanique (cendre), les rocs calcaires, sableux et les schistes de différentes régions du Japon, ont été étudiés. Les schistes et les dolomites de la région de Ganesh Himal le long du haut Himalaya (Népal) ont été étudiés et comparés à ceux du Japon. Les tests de désintégration sur les rocs ont été effectués dans l’eau pure. Les résultats montrent que l’index de désintégration des schistes du Japon est inférieur aux schistes du Népal. En ce qui concerne les rocs carbonyles, l’index de désintégration des rocs calcaires du Japon est supérieur à ceux des dolomites du Népal. Une décroissance de la résistance à la durabilité est observée avec une plus grande porosité des rocs. Les tests de congélation-décongelation sur les schistes et les rocs d’origine volcanique (cendre) du Japon montrent une apparition précoce des fissures mais l’expansion des fissures est plus rapide dans les rocs volcaniques. Des tests similaires montrent que les rocs volcaniques (cendre) se désagrégent plus rapidement que les schistes. Cependant, les rocs sableux restent intacts après plusieurs cycles de congélation-décongélation.

The production of precipitated silica in the United States is about 145,000 tons of SiO2 and its prices vary significantly (from $ 1 to $ 4.5 per kg) depending on the area of its application. One of the most important parameters is its specific surface characterising dispersion (particle size and shape, presence or absence of pores), at a certain value of which the material acquires new properties and quality. At present, a technology has been developed for processing slag from phosphorus production to produce precipitated silica (‘white soot’) with a high specific surface and the possibility of extracting valuable components such as rare-earth metals (REMs) into a product enriched with them has been shown. However, the content of impurities in the deposited silicon dioxide, such as aluminum and iron, is above acceptable limits and may affect the quality of the final products. Therefore, along with the structure and specific surface, a very important characteristic of ‘white soot’ is the chemical purity of the material. In turn, calcium oxide occupies a significant share in the concentrate of rare-earth metals, which affects the content of ΣREMs oxides, which does not exceed 17.3 %. The low content of a valuable component may affect the feasibility of further processing. For the most complete utilisation of phosphorus slag, the authors propose a method for their acid processing, which allows for minimising the conversion of impurities to finely divided silica and collective concentrate, which will improve the quality of these products. As a rule, removing waste rock at the beginning of the process improves the conditions for the flotation of minerals, and also reduces the operating costs of crushing, grinding and flotation. Lead-zinc ores in the Shalkiya deposit of the Republic of Kazakhstan are classified as difficult for enrichment, but taking into account their significant reserves, they are one of the main potential ores for the production of lead and zinc. Under industrial conditions, for processing ores of the Shalkiya deposit, a selective flotation concentration scheme with the production of lead and zinc concentrates is recommended. However, according to the recommended scheme, it is not possible to obtain high-quality concentrates of lead and zinc, with high metal recovery. The paper presents the results of studies of preliminary gravitational enrichment of lead-zinc ore in the Shalkiya deposit. Based on the fractional analysis for the particle size range of -40+8 mm, Henri- Reingard enrichment curves were constructed, separation density (2730 kg /m3) was established to isolate the light fraction with the lowest possible lead and zinc content, and gravity enrichment indices (0.7-0.71) were determined. It was found out that when using gravitational enrichment of the original large-sized ore in the Shalkiya deposit, tails are released at the beginning of the technological process with a yield of up to 20% with the extraction of silica up to 30%, calcite up to 11% and carbonaceous matter up to 12%. As a result of the studies, it was found that the beneficiation of crushed lump ore could be conducted in heavy suspensions. One of the positive aspects of the use of gravitational enrichment is the reduction of energy costs for grinding the heavy fraction, which was experimentally proved in this article. Gold bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand consist predominantly of narrow tabular conglomerates with quartzite host rock. Extensive mining of these deposits at depth results in significant stresses being induced in the periphery of the tabular excavations. Where remnant pillars are created excessive stresses have resulted in the dynamic failure of the abutments. At the Hartebeestfontein Mine four brittle shear zones have recently been exposed and investigated. For most part, they represent abutment failure into the weaker hangingwall strata, striking parallel to the abutment, dipping towards the stope, with a sense of displacement consistent with closure of the stope from above. These shear zones are similar to those described in various publications by Ortlepp2: they are essentially brittle shear zones characterised by the presence of very finely comminuted ‘rock flour’ on an obviously freshly sheared surface. The angle between the shear zone wall and extension fractures indicate the sense of shear and the intersection of the extension fractures with the shear zone walls define a strong lineation normal to the direction of slip. It is suggested that these structures are referred to as ‘mining induced dynamic brittle shears’. Les gisements d’or du Witwatersrand consistent principalement de conglomérats tabulaires peu épais contenus dans une quartzite mère. Une exploitation poussée de ces gisements en profondeur a pour résultat l’apparition d’importantes contraintes induites à la périphérie des excavations tabulaires. Là où des piliers restants sont créés, des contraintes excessives ont eu pour résultat une rupture dynamique des appuis. Dans la Mine d’Hartebeestfontein, quatre zones fragiles de cisaillement ont été récemment exposées et étudiées. Dans la plupart des cas, elles représentent une rupture des appuis dans les strates moins solides de la paroi suspendue, orientée parallèlement à l’appui, inclinée en direction du chantier d’abattage avec une direction de mouvement consistante avec l’affaissement du toit de la galerie d’abattage. Ces zones de cisaillement sont similaires à celles décrites par Ortlepp2 dans diverses publications: Ce sont essentiellement des zones cisaillement fragiles caractérisées par la présence de « farine de roche » très finement réduite sur une surface évidemment fraîchement cisaillée. L’angle entre la paroi de la zone de cisaillement et les fractures de tension indiquent le sens du cisaillement et l’intersection des fractures de tension avec les parois de la zone de cisaillement définit une forte délinéation perpendiculaire à la direction du glissement. Il est suggéré que l’on se réfère à de telles structures comme des « cisaillements dynamiques fragiles induits par l‘exploitation ». Goldablagerungen im Witwatersrand bestehen überwiegend aus schmalen tabularen Konglomeraten mit Quarzitwirtgestein. Der umfangreiche Abbau dieser Ablagerungen in der Tiefe resultiert in signifikanten Drücken, die auf die Peripherie der tabularen Aushöhlungen wirken. Wo Restpfeiler hergestellt wurden, resultierten exzessive Drücke im dynamischen Versagen der Auflager. In der Hartebeestfontein Grube wurden kürzlich vier spröde Scherzonen freigelegt und untersucht. Zum größten Teil representieren sie Auflagerversagen im Stratum der schwächeren Stollenfirste, parallel zum Auflager verlaufend, in Richtung Abbaustelle abfallend, mit einem gewissen Grad an Verschiebung konsistent mit der Schliessung der Strosse von oben. Diese Scherzonen sind jenen ähnlich, die in den verschiedenen Publikationen von Ortlepp2 beschrieben werden: sie sind im Wesentlichen spröde Scherzonen, charakterisiert durch das Vorhandensein des sehr fein pulverisierten „Gesteinsmehls“ auf einer offensichtlich frisch abgescherten Oberfläche. Der Winkel zwischen der Scherzonenwand und den Bruchverlängerungen deutet die Richtung der Scherung an und die Kreuzung der Bruchverlängerungen mit der Abscherzone grenzt sich gegen eine starke Lineation normal zur Richtung der Lehne ab. Es wird vorgeschlagen, daß diese Strukturen als `vom Abbau verursachte dynamisch spröde Scherungen’ bezeichnet werden.

This study was carried out in a bid to survey Ganboke gold mine in Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Province, southwestern Chad. The Ganboke mine is now being prepared for investigation and development, and the research sought to perform rock properties tests of relevant rocks through its geological survey, rock mass evaluation, and in-situ and laboratory tests and analyze the stability by the means of limit equilibrium method, thereby suggest appropriate methods to design the pit slope and individual benches in Ganboke mine. Targenting GS1-GS1' section with the depth of 180 m and GS2-GS2' section with the depth of 150 m in the survey area, we set the height of the bench at 10 m and 15 m, and the angle of bench at 60o and 70o, respectively, and then reviewed the stability for dried condition and saturated condition. The result of examination indicated that it would be appropriate to set the bench height at 10m and the bench angle at 60o in developing the mine slopes concerned. Cette étude est réalisé dans le but de faire des recherches sur Ganboke mine d'or dans Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Provence, Tchad sud-ouest. La Ganboke mine est actuellement en train de étre disposé à la investigation et le développement, et la recherche a cherché à accomplir les tests de la propriétè des roches par l'intermédiaire de la étude géologique, la évaluation de la masse rocheuse, et in-situ et les tests de laboratoire et à faire l'analyse de la stabilité au moyen de la méthode d'équilibre limite, de ce fait à proposer le methodes propres à faire le plan de la pente et les gradins individuels dans la Ganboke mine. Concernant la section de GS1-GS1' avec la profondeur de 180 m et la section de GS2-GS2' avec la profondeur de 150 m dans l'aire d'étude, nous mîmes l'hauteur du gradin à 10 m et 15 m, et l'angle du gradin à 60o and 70o, respectivement, et alors nous avon reconsidéré la stabilité pour la condition sèche et la condition saturé. Le résultat d'examen a indiqué que il pourrait être propre de mettre l'hauteur du gradin à 10m et l'angle du gradin à 60o en développant les pentes de la mine concerné. Diese Forschung wurde um das Gold Bergwerk zu überschauen in Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Provinz, der Südwesten Chad ausgeführen. Das Ganboke Bergwerk ist jetzt zur Erforschung und Entwicklung vorgebereiten worden, und die Forschung suchte zu ausführen die Prüfungen der Felseigenschaft durch geologischen Überblick, Felsmassewertbestimmung, und In-situ und Lavorversuch auf, und analysieren die Stabilität mittelst der Grenzegleichgewichtsmethode, da-durch schlug die angemes-sen Methoden zu entwerfen die Böschungen und die einzelnen Bänke im Ganboke Bergwerk vor. Für den Abschnitt GS1-GS1' mit der Tiefe von 180 m und GS2-GS2' mit der Tiefe von 150 m in der Überblickfläche, wir setzten die Bankhöhe an 10 m und 15 m, und das Bankwinkel an 60o und 70o, beziehungsweise, und dann zurückblickten die Stabilität für die getrockneten Bedingungen und die gesättigten Bedingungen. Das Ergebnis der Untersuchung anzeigte daß es würde angemessen sein zu setzen die Bqnkhöhe an 10m und das Bankwinkel an 60o in der Entwickelungen vom Bergwerk be-teiligt.
