A zinc-pyrite ore from the Gray deposit in Jo Daviess County, Ill., was successfully concentrated on a laboratory scale. Initially, drill cuttings were submitted for separation of zinc and iron concentrates. Subsequent to mine development, a large sample of coarse ore was submitted to ascertain its amenability to sink-float treatment to produce a low-grade zinc-iron concentrate and discard a clean tailing. The samples of ore were submitted to the Rolla Metallurgical Branch by the Mining Division of the Federal-Bureau-of Mines. They were obtained during the recent war as a part of the extensive government program to increase metal production through exploration for new mineral deposits and investigation of old mineralized areas. The first sample consisted of about 3,000 pounds of drill cuttings collected, during the Bureau?s churn and diamond- drilling program. The second sample was taken at a later date, after Tri-State Zinc, Inc., had opened the deposit and commenced milling the ore. This sample consisted of a ?ton-of mill feed crushed through 2 inches and collected over a period of 3 days.

From 1886, the first year shipments were recorded, until 1939, the Leadville district produced over 3,500,000 long tons of manganiferous ore. Of this total, metallurgical-type ores comprised 27 percent and manganiferous iron ores suitable for fluxing in lead smelters made up 73 percent. In 1939, the Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic minerals investigative program being conducted at the time, requested the Mineral Industries Survey Section of the Mining Division to make a comprehensive study of the manganese resources of the Leadville area. This investigation, owing to the caved and flooded condition of the underground mine workings, was necessarily confined to a study of old maps, production records, and geological reports, and the results were published as an Information Circular in July 1940.

"The factors that determine the efficiency of reduction of iron oxides by gaseous reducing agents may be considered in two classes; those which effect the equilibrium between the reacting substances end their products, and those which affect the rete of reaction. Both sets are of prectical importance, the former as influencing the maximum possible efficiency and the latter as determining what fraction of the maximum yield may be readily or profitably obtained. In addition, the thermal changes attending the reduction greatly affect the chance of successful industrial application of any such process, and knowledge of them is necessary for the intelligent design of apparatus and control of the reaction. Some aspects of each of these three divisions of the problem are discussed below.I. The Maximum Reducing Power of Fuel Gases on the Oxides of IronsThe gases that heve been considered specifically in this work are coal gas, water gas and producer gas, typical analyses” of which are given in Table 1 Of the various hydrocarbons represented in Table 1, (several being grouped or averaged as C2R4), methane is the only gas assumed to be capable of existence at appreciable pressures under the conditions of interest here. The Bureau of Mines conducted an exploratory field survey to determine the amount of airborne coal dust, the size distribution of the dust, and the rate of dust deposition in coal mine airways. The survey was taken at eight underground locations in operating coal mines. The rate of dust deposition in the airways depended upon the concentration of air-borne dust and decreased exponentially with distance from the dust source. The rate was seemingly independent of the size of the airborne dust particles. The rate of deposition, along a return, for the coal dust from a fade being mined with a continuous mining machine closely matched the rate for the rock dust from a trickle duster. A sample rock-dusting schedule for that return is presented; that is, the trickle duster should be operated for 3-112 hours after every five shifts to protect the average deposit of new float coal dust in the return, but operation after every three shifts is preferred, to protect an occasional heavier deposit.

The Bureau of Mines Helium Field Operations has developed a method for determining the helium-3 CHe) content of natural gas and mixtures eontaining 0.5% to 100% helium. The helium is preconcentrated by passing samples through anhydrone, a liquid-nitrogen-cooled chareoal trap, and a titanium absorption trap. The mass spectrometer used to analyze the samples is tuned to 3He at mle ::=; 3.016. Hydrogen deuteride (HD+) interference is minimized by the titanium absorption trap and high instrument resolution. Sample measurements are compared with identically made measurements of a gravimetrically prepared primary standard. The method has a limit of detection of 0.15 ppb with a relative deviation of 13% below the 1~ppb level. The relative deviation is less than 7% for gases eontaining over 100 ppb 3He. The helium isotope ratios of natural gases from the Bureau's Tuck-Trigg Dome Red Cave, the Bush Dome Red Cave, and the Bush Dome Brown Dolomite Formations are distinguishable from one another and from the isotope ratio of crude helium produced from the Panhandle-Hugoton Gasfield.

"Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In order to determine if eicosanoid production and cytokine production are altered in AM obtained from coal miners, we compared production of prostaglandin E2 (PCE2), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNfa.) by cultured AM from normal human subjects and coal miners. The recovery of AM from miners' lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage was significantly greater than that from control subjects. Mean eicosanoid and cytokine production by AM from active miners was also increased compared to AM from control subjects, but this increase was not statistically significant. AM from control subjects produced significantly more TXA2 and TNFa. when exposed to lipopolysaccharide than did AM from miners. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor suprofen reduced PGE1 and TXA1 production and TNF0t. release but had no effect on LTB4 production or IL-1B release by miners' AM. The lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid attenuated TNFa release, as well as that of LTB4, but had no effect on IL-1B release. Inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK 38,485 also reduced TNFa release by active miners ' AM but had no effect on PGE1, LTB, production, or IL-1 f3 release. The results of these studies suggest that occupational inhalation of coal dust may increase total lung eicosanoid and cytokine levels and reduce the reactivity of AM to bacterial endotoxin. Furthermore, coal dust-induced changes in both eicosanoid and cytokine release may be subject to pharmacological modulation.The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a primary defensive cell in the lung and is one of the first cell types to encounter inhaled mineral dust. The response of the AM to invading foreign material is designed to enhance the defensive capacity of the lung. However, in the case of occupational inhalation of mineral dust particles, this response may be inappropriate, resulting not in the defense of the lung but in chronic inflammation and fibrosis (Rom et al., 1987; Takemura et al., 1989). The reaction of the AM to chronic mineral dust exposure may involve the exaggerated release of paracrine mediators of lung function, including eicosanoids (oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid) and peptides, including cytokines and growth factors (Sibille & Reynolds, 1990). Eicosanoids are involved in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, vascular permeability, fibroblast growth, and the recruitment of additional immune cells to the alveolar space (Barnard et al., 1992; Elias et al., 1985; Scott et al., 1982). AM-derived cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 B) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TN Fa) have a variety of biological activities including the regulation of fibroblast growth and proliferation (Becker et al., 1989; Libby et al., 1989; Schmidt et al., 1984). Interestingly, in vitro studies with macrophages suggest that the production of cytokines may be linked to eicosanoid production, in particular that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) may down-regulate IL-1 f3 and TN Foe production by the AM (Bonta et al., 1989; Kunkel et al., 1986; Monick et al., 1987)."

The properties of the Colorado Copper Co. in Sinbad Valley, Mesa and Montrose Counties, Colo., were rehabilitated and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in October, November, and December 1942. The several deposits were reexamined in March and April 1945 to obtain information disclosed by company work after December 1942. The development program included surface trenching, rehabilitation of several edits, and channel sampling of the exposures. Assay determinations wore made on 204 samples from the surface and underground workings. The results are given in the appendix. Several copper deposits in the Sinbad Valley area are similar in origin. The host rocks are sedimentary and mice in age from Pennsylvanian to Cretaceous. The Colorado No. 3 deposit occurs in the Cutler formation, which consists of many small lenses of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale. Mineralization is closely associated with faulting. On the Pyramid group the enrichment occurs in a zone of fracturing and jointing end also spreads into the adjoining sandstone. The ore deposition on the Copper Rivet claim is associated with a fault zone and is confined to en area above the contact of the Dolores-Wingate formations. Mineral deposits on the Sinbad claims occur at intersections of faults with blue-gray Pennsylvania limestone. Copper enrichment occurs along faults and as replacement of the surrounding limestone. Metallurgical tests indicate that ores from the Colorado No. 3 and Pyramid claims can be treated successfully by leaching with sulfuric acid. This method cannot be applied to ores from the Copper Rivet or Sinbad deposits because of high calcite content. Flotation tests at Boulder City, Nev., showed a recovery of less than 60 percent with a 14.24 percent copper concentrate.

This report describes a rapid, reliable, and relatively simple method developed by the Bureau of Mines Pyrometallurgy Laboratory at Bruceton, Pa., for determining lime (calcium oxide) and magnesia (magnesium oxide) in various materials containing these constituents in greater than trace amounts. Optionally, titania (titanium dioxide) may be determined for the same sample. The accuracy of the method, suitable for most purposes, is shown by comparing the Bureau results with those obtained by accepted procedures. The method has been applied satisfactorily to the routine analysis of blast-furnace slags, for which purpose it was primarily developed, and to other calcareous compositions. In the Pyrometallurgy Laboratory it has replaced the standard methods previously used to determine lime and magnesia, and has been in general use by that laboratory for the past several years. The analysis time, generally under 3 hours, is considerably less than required by standard methods.

Continuous open - circuit attrition grinding of a coarse commercial kaolin to produce paper - coating clay , which must have a particle size analysis of 70 percent or more minus 2 - micron equivalent spherical diameter ( esd ) , was studied by the Bureau . The coarse clay , containing about 11 percent minus 2 -micron esd material , was ground in a 10 - inch- diameter attrition grinder using continuous single- and multiple - stage grinding circuits . The clay feed rates varied from 10 to 480 pounds per hour . In some tests , the influence of varying loads of sand grinding media on particle size reduction was studied . Batch grinding tests also were made for comparative purposes . Multiple- stage grinding gave better results than single - stage treatment when equivalent raw clay feed rates were used . In the best test made , a product containing about 80 percent minus 2 - micron esd material was obtained when grinding 60 pounds of raw clay per hour using a three - stage grinding circuit . Power consumption in the test was about 318 kilowatt -hours per ton of clay treated or 475 kilowatt - hours per ton of minus 2 - micron esd material produced .

Heavy equipment manufacturers have made a long-term commitment to minimize operator vibration exposure for comfort, performance, and health reasons. Domestic and international guidelines/standards and EC laws dictate exposure limits based on measurement of vibration at the interface between the seat and the operator’s buttocks using seat-pad accelerometry.1-4 This is historically based on the assumption that the only major source of vibration is transmitted through the seat pan. However, vibration may also be imparted to the head and neck via the steering wheel and/or arm-rest controls and a relatively rigid upper body.5 Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck motion. The purpose of this study was to investigate relative head and trunk motions during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree-of-freedom vibration system. An 8-camera Vicon motion capture system operating at 200 frames per second, recorded the motion of reflective surface markers on 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile right-handed male subjects, using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted armrest controls (FM), seat-mounted armrest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). The relative motions (change in distances) from the marker over the xiphoid process (caudal end of sternum) to markers over each shoulder, each mid-clavicle, the presternal notch, and to each of four markers on a tight band around the head were calculated (12,001 frames, 6-dof motion only). As a rigid body control, distances between markers on the head band were also monitored. The standard deviation (SD) of the 12,001 distances between pairs of markers was normalized by the mean (L) of the associated distances producing: SD/L which was used as a measure of motion. Error assessments were also performed by analyzing the motion between relatively fixed markers (on the headband). A repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate the results. While five ride files were used, only one ride file containing significant lateral acceleration components was analyzed for comparing the effects of two armrest controls versus use of a steering wheel for this part of our study. Results Values of SD/L between the points on the relatively rigid head band were consistently small and similar to each other for all conditions with one exception due to treatment (SM v SW, p=0.0145). SD/L between the markers over the xiphoid process and the presternal notch, another region that should be relatively rigid, were also similar to each other for all conditions. Use of floor-mounted, arm rest controls versus a steering wheel produced a significant increase in the value of SD/L between the xiphoid process and: the right shoulder marker (92%, p=0.0316), the right mid-clavicle marker (47%, p=0.0478), and the right-front marker on the head band (28%, p=0.0182). The Carson-Iceberg RARE II study area, consisting o; 209,990 acres (134,983 ha), is on the crest of the Sierra Nevada in California, about 35 mi (56 km) south of Lake Tahoe. The area is divided into four parts: C4-986; C5-986; and B5-986, north and south portions. No mineral production has been recorded for the area. However, gold, silver, and tungsten resources and potential for additional resources have been estimated for the area and just north of area C4-986.

General expressions for evaluating practically all the thermodynamic properties of a fluid from a single equation of state are derived. Most of the formulas are expressed in terms of the compressibility factor, with this factor being an explicit function of the temperature and the molal density. The Bureau of Mines undertook a bench-scale study of three different types of oxidized taconites3 from the Lake Superior district to improve the dispersion-selective flocculation-desliming process for beneficiating these materials. The response-surface contours of the effects of dissolved ionic species in the water and of three dispersion systems on the selective flocculation process were studied. Results of metallurgical data and chemical analyses of the aqueous phase showed that the water quality affects the performance of the selective flocculation process.

This paper on the physical chemistry of oil-field emulsions is the last of a series of three prepared as a result of a study of oil-field emulsions. The first paper3 deals with the factors responsible for the formation of emulsions, find the second4 with methods now utilized for dehydrating oil-field emulsions. A more complete report of the whole investigation is in preparation. The laws governing the formation and resolution of oil-field emulsions fall in that branch of physical chemistry doling with colloids. Much work has been done by the physical chemist on colloids And emulsions, and, although most of this work was on commercial and pharmaceutical emulsions, yet the principles developed apply in a general gray to oil-field emulsions.

Although secondary recovery of lead and lead-tin alloys has been common practice in the United States during recent years, there is little published in-formation concerning recovery techniques. Available information does not cover metal recovery from wet dross skimmings. This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to develop techniques that would allow lead-tin alloys to be recovered from wet dross skimmings containing large amounts of zinc chloride. A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for recovering lead-tin alloys from wet solder dross skimmings. Straight water leaching, either with or without a second leaching operation carried out with a Na2C03 addition for removing chloride, produced a dross that could be smelted without further treatment. Overall recoveries averaging 92 percent of the metal values in the dross were obtained in the form of lead-tin alloys, which had an average tin content of 16 percent and lead content of 84 percent. The recovered alloy contained less than 0.02 percent zinc, as determined by both chemical and spectrographic analyses.

Roof bolting has been known for many years, although the practice had very limited application before 1948. Since then, bolting has been introduced as a systematic method of support in more than 700 coal mines and more than 200 noncoalmines and other underground openings in rock. By far the greatest number of bolts are used to support bedded roof. This is largely because of their use in coal mines, although roof bolts are used in mining bedded deposits of all kinds -potash (New Mexico), trona (Wyoming), and ores of iron (Alabama), lead (Missouri), uranium (Utah), lead-zinc (Utah), and copper (Michigan and Arizona). Thus, bolting has been successfully employed to reinforce bedded roof under a wide range of conditions despite the limited knowledge of the principles involved. This report develops the basic principles of bolting bedded roof based on elementary beam theory and on the results of tests intended to prove or disprove certain fundamental premises. Specifically, the objectives were to gain an understanding of the function of the bolts and the behavior of bolted roof and to establish standard bolt patterns. A combination of theoretical and experimental analysis was employed. The experimental method consisted of testing mine -roof models in a centrifuge. The models, the test procedure, and the model-prototype relations are described in a companion report (1)2/. A second companion report presents a method for designing systems of vertical bolts to reinforce bedded roof (2).

This report presents the results of a study of water injection in the HX sub-pool fault block V-B, in the Upper Terminal zone, Wilmington field, California, and is based on data obtained to May 1957. An earlier report3/ describes the results of gas injection in part of the field. The principal purpose of the pilot flood was to determine whether a sand having a permeability of 1,200 millidarcys and containing oil having a viscosity of 17 centipoises could be waterflooded effectively. The results of a preliminary study by engineers of the Long Beach Harbor Department of oil recoveries from areas where encroaching edgewater was active and the results of an independent study by a consultant retained by the Long Beach Harbor Department were favorable to a trial waterflood. After these preliminary studies, a detailed petroleum-engineering exam-ination was made of the technical details. As a result, a peripheral flood was started in June 1953. The peripheral flood was deemed desirable because the producing wells are bottomed a short distance from the edgewater. The HX subpool was selected for the pilot test because it is an isolated section of the Upper Terminal zone and is separated from the adjoining pools by faults on the east and west and by edgewater on the north, south, and west. Several petroleum-engineering methods were applied to evaluate the performance of the waterflood, and all showed that injecting water stimulated oil production.

This report gives the results of an experimental study of the progressive changes that occur in particle size and size distribution when a homogeneous and isotropic mineral is subjected to crushing by impact. The mineral used in the study was uniformly sized quartz, which was crushed in a simple drop¬-weight machine that applied impact energy up to about 100 kg-cm per g. Screen analyses of the crushed products were analyzed by the method of moments to determine the mean size, variance, skewness, and kurtosis. Analysis of the data from these experiments shows that the mean size of the crushed product is a function of the energy input and the initial size. The size distribution is functionally related to the degree of size reduction. As the mean particle size is decreased, at first there is a corresponding increase in the variance and decrease in the skewness, But, as size reduction is carried further, each tends eventually to approach a steady value, and the form of the size distribution becomes stable.

This investigation was performed to develop chlorination methods for extracting tungsten from scheelite and from an ore concentrate containing a mixture of scheelite and wolframite. On a laboratory scale with proper temperature control using elemental chlorine, over 90 percent extraction of tungsten is achieved. Carbon and sulfur dioxide were studied as reducing agents. The effects of salts such as calcium fluoride and sodium chloride were studied as additives to increase extraction and to reduce impurities in the volatile tungsten chloride product. Sodium chloride reacts with ferric chloride to form a nonvolatile double salt; whereas the chlorides and oxychlorides of tungsten are volatile and consequently condense free of iron. Separation of tungsten from molybdenum from an equal molar mixture was successful by fractionally distilling the oxygen-free chlorides and by selectively condensing the oxychlorides. Yields of 60 and 80 percent, respectively, were achieved for separating the less volatile tungsten chlorides containing less than 0.5 percent molybdenum.

An anhydrous chlorination process has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the production of copper, ferric oxide, and sulfur from chalcopyrite. The first part of the process is a chlorination step in which elemental sulfur and a mixture of iron-copper chlorides are produced. This paper describes the second step of the process in which the copper and iron chlorides are reacted with oxygen to selectively convert the iron chloride to ferric oxide and chlorine leaving the copper in the chloride form. The chlorides are pulverized and dropped countercurrent to a flow of oxygen in a vertical 20-cm-diam. reactor at 800° C. By leaching with brine, the copper chloride may be separated from the insoluble iron oxide and reduced to copper powder by electrowinning. It has been demonstrated that 70 to 80 pct of the iron can be converted to oxide in a single-stage operation with a chlorine content in the offgas of 80 pct. After removal of the oxygen, this chlorine could be recycled to the chlorination step. A two-stage operation will convert 98 to 99 pct of the iron in the mixture to insoluble oxides. The offgas from the second stage contains 70 pct chlorine.
