"Silicosis was first reported by the ancient Greeks and is apparently as old as human history. The prevalence of this illness peaked in the last half of the 19th century and the early part of this century, when mechanized industry was developing and the relationship between dust exposure and disease was less well understood. Yet, even today in devel-oped countries, sporadic outbreaks of silicosis occur when workers are consistently exposed to silica particles of respir-able size (0.5 to 5.0 µm in diameter) at levels exceeding those recognized to be safe.Silicon dioxide or silica. is the earth's most abundant mineral. Silica is considered to be either free (i.e.. unbound to other minerals) or combined. Minerals with high amounts of free silica include quartz (including granite) flint. Chert, opal, chalcedony, and diatomite. Combined forms of silica are called silicates and include, among others, asbestos talc and kaolin.In the crystalline form, silica exists as quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite (Fig. 28). Of these quartz is ubiquitous in the environment and occurs as sand and as a part of many rocks. Cristobalite and tridymite occur naturally in lava and can be formed by the heating of quartz or amorphous silica. Cristo-balite is more tibrogenic than quartz. Amorphous silica is noncrystalline and, therefore, is relatively nontoxic and does not cause silicosis. It occurs as diatomite (skeletons of pre-historic marine organisms) or as vitreous silica (glass), the result of carefully melting and then quickly cooling free crystalline silica. Heating diatomite with or without alkali (a process known as calcining), forms cristobalite and adds the respiratory toxicity of free crystalline silica.There are many opportunities for occupational exposure to respirable crystalline free silica. Some of the commonly en-countered occupations in which the risk of silicosis exists are reported in Table 20.Silicosis. the pulmonary disease caused by the inhalation of silica particles of respirable size, is most commonly cate-gorized by findings on the chest radiograph. The most typical presentations simple silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis appear different radiologically but are grouped under the category of classic silicosis because they are a part of the radiographic spectrum of this illness. Radiographically, simple silicosis appears as small (less than 10 mm in diameter), rounded opacities, typically predominant in the upper lung zones. Progressive massive fibrosis is the result of the coalescence of these small nodular opacities and appears as larger opacities (more than 10 mm in diameter), again typicallydistributed in the upper lung zones."

In situ horizontal stresses were measured to determine the influences of geologic anomalies on the regional horizontal stress field in two coal mines in southern Illinois. Stress measurements were obtained near a normal fault having a 121-ft displacement at the AMAX Wabash Mine and a large coalbed want at the Kerr-McGee Galatia No.5 Mine. Horizontal stress measurements were completed using a Bureau of Mines borehole deformation gauge. The average maximum and minimum horizontal compressional stresses at the Wabash Mine were 1,400 and 800 psi, with the direction of maximum stress ranging from N 78° W to N 83° E. At the Galatia No.5 Mine, the averages were 1,500 and 500 psi, with the direction of maximum stress ranging from N 85° E to N 75° E. Generally, the geologic anomalies appear to have no dramatic effect of the regional horizontal stresses. However, subtle differences between stress measurements suggest an influence by the fault zone at the Wabash Mine. The larger anisotropic stress conditions at the Galatia No.5 Mine could be responsible for the increase in kink zones and directional roof failures.

According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of January 1, 1929 there were 413 completed refineries in the United States, with a total daily crude-oil capacity of 3,509,540 barrels. In addition, 14 refineries, with a potential capacity of 99,000 barrels, were being constructed. Of the completed refineries, 341, with a capacity of 3,325,890 barrels, or 95 per cent of the total capacity, were in operation; and 72, with a capacity of 183,650 barrels, or 5 per cent of the total, were shut down. The improved condition of the refining industry in 1928 was indicated in several ways; namely, in an increase in the total capacity of the completed plants, in the opening up of a few plants which were shut down during 1927, in a decrease in the number of plants dismantled, and in an increase in the number of plants under construction. The majority of the refiners have followed a steady expansion program commensurate in most cases with the increase in demand for petroleum products. Obsolete equipment has been dismantled and modern equipment has been installed, with the net result that the total capacity of the completed refineries in the United States has shown a steady increase since January 1, 1918, the date of the first Bureau of Mines survey. Between January 1, 1928, and January 1, 1929, the number of completed plants fell from 423 to 413, but their total capacity increase 259,160 barrels, or 8 per cent. This compares with an increase in runs to stills of domestic and foreign crude petroleum of 10 per cent, and of domestic crude alone of 7 per cent.

The rapid development of transportation facilities in Japan focused the attention of this country on the possibility of converting the existing coal resources (of which there was an abundance) into liquid fuels, for which there was a constantly increasing demand. Previous work had indicated that this could be accomplished by utilizing one of two processes - the Bergius process, in which high temperatures and high pressures were employed to effect direct liquefaction of the coal, and the Fischer-Tropsch process, in which an indirect liquefaction of coal was accomplished by the production of liquid hydro-carbons from hydrogen-carbon monoxide mixtures. This report describes some investigations into the latter process, which was first developed by Fischer and his colleagues in the Coal Laboratory in Muhlheim, Germany, in 1923. By 1932, these investigators had achieved a 60-percent theoretical yield (152 ml. of liquid hydrocarbons per cubic meter of 2H2:ICO synthesis gas) by using a precipitated Co-Th02 catalyst.3/ At the same time (1932), Dr. Kita of Kyoto Imperial University and Messrs. Fujimura and Tsuneoka obtained 145 ml. of gasoline (C5+) per cubic meter of synthetic gas by using a Co-Cu-Th-U catalyst. 4/ This report is a description of the experimental results subsequently obtained at the Fuel Research Institute, Kawaguchi City, Saitama, up to 1935.

Barite, the natural sulfate of barium (BaSO4), is the most important barium mineral. Normally it is white (opaque to translucent), but impurities sometimes render it yellow, gray, blue, brown, red, or black. Brown or red stains are commonly caused by iron oxide. Barite is unusually heavy (specific gravity, about 4.5); in fact, it is one of the heaviest of the nonmetallic minerals. It is brittle and fractures unevenly. The hardness of barite ranges from 2.5 to 3 but is usually about 3. It can be scratched by a copper coin. Pure barite contains 65.7 percent BaO and A.3 percent S03. Much of the crude barite ore mined, however, contains impurities; thus it has a lower content of barite and consequently less barium oxide. Commercial analyses show its total BaSO4 content. Barium also occurs in nature as the mineral witherite (BaCO3), which, however, is not common in the United States, and commercial deposits have been found only in California. Witherite is a yellowish-white, light-gray, or Kite mineral with a specific gravity of about 3, a hardness of 3 to 4, and an uneven to subconchoidal fracture.

The Bureau of Mines' Oil Shale Data Bank (OSDB) was created in 1976 to serve as a centralized source for the storage, retrieval, and dissemination of technical literature, patents, and information on research projects in oil shale. Thousands of bibliographic references, patents, and research projects relating to the mining of oil shale have been identified, abstracted, and indexed according to selected keyword topics. The resulting data bank listings are contained in three sections, each with a separate keyword breakdown for use in rapidly identifying references pertaining to a specific subject. All references cited in the OSDB were published prior to an established cut-off date of May 1, 1981, when a redirection of Bureau of Mines programs resulted in the loss of project funds and the subsequent phasing-out of data bank operations. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The oil shale data bank listings are the result of a team effort of the project staff. "INTRODUCTION The South Hecla mine, one of the principal mines of the Alta United Mines Co., is situated at Alta in thee Little Cottonwood mining district, about 30 miles southeasterly from Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine has produced copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and is reported to have been one 'of the principal sources of this country's bismuth from 1912 to 1925. The tungsten mineral, scheelite, has been found but has not been recovered. The extreme need for these minerals during World War II prompted an examination of the property by the Bureau of Mines and resulted in an unpublished report entitled ""The South Hecla Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah"" (fig. 1).A Bureau of Mines project 3301 was initiated, and operations were started early in 1943. The primary purpose of the project was to increase substantially the reserves of bismuth and tungsten ores. The critical situation in regard to lead, copper, and zinc developed during the early stages of the operation, and the work was expanded to include the development of ores 'of these metals.An investigation of 'the Albion, Rustler, and Greeley workings adjoining the South Hecla mine was made, and this work is also described (fig. 2); ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn Its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each investigative project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The complex organic chemicals in coal differ from those in petroleum mainly by the ratio of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms; this ratio is about 2 for coal and 1 for petroleum. By changing the ratio, coal can be converted into compounds similar to those found in petroleum. In. very simplified form, omitting here the special conditions required, the paths by which this can be done are: [ ] Part or all of the coal is first gasified by reaction with steam and oxygen, either in a gasifier or while the coal is still in place underground. The resulting gas is mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide, with impurities that .must be removed before further processing by one of the following routes.

The ternary system A14C3-AIN-Al203 has been examined to determine compositions which may display desirable high-temperature refractory properties. Powder methods were employed in the synthesis of all test compositions. Forming and sintering behavior was examined and hot-pressing parameters were measured. Several properties were studied for each composition of interest in the system. The properties included hydrolysis rate in moist air, elevated temperature oxidation rate, density, softening point, tensile strength, and rupture strength. In most cases equilibrium was not achieved, and the data are representative of a nonequilibrium system. Approximately 16 separate phases have been observed in the system. Forming behavior and selected properties of five compositions of interest were compared with those of aluminum oxide and aluminum nitride. None of the compositions compared favorably. Oxidation and vaporization appear to be serious drawbacks to the use of these compositions at elevated temperatures.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The analytical variability encountered when sampling for platinum-group metals (PGM) was statistically evaluated during a 1983 study by the Bureau of Mines and the University of Alaska. Sampling procedures were designed to systematically incorporate commonly used reconnaissance exploration techniques under actual field conditions. Analytical variability was evaluated at each procedural step. Analytical data from each sample from a single deposit grouped relatively well around the calculated mean for that deposit. Standard deviations did not exceed 43 pct of the mean for any of the deposits; more commonly, the deviation was about 25 pct. Statistical treatment of the data by analysis of variance indicated the most important source of error is selection of the sample site. Two or more replicate samples appear necessary to adequately quantify the PGM content. Secondly, significant variation occurs during preparation of a pulverized split for fire assay. The optimum sample size was in the 11-lb range; larger samples did not appreciably reduce variability. Smaller samples generally indicated a higher degree of variability. Evaluation of the sample method suggested the common grab sample, if carefully taken, is a useful indicator of the general range of PGM concentration but potentially includes a considerable margin of error.

As part of the broad program to improve the safety of underground coal mines, the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center sponsored several detailed studies on the inhibition of coal dust-air explosions. The present study was one of these. The goal of the research was to advance the development of improved coal-dust explosion inhibiting agents by determining, on a laboratory scale, the basic chemical processes involved in the inhibition of coal-dust flames by dry-powder agents. B. Our Approach Neither the basic molecular processes involved in coal combustion, nor the molecular mode of action of dry-powder agents, are known with certainty. Our approach, therefore, involved the direct determination, by sampling techniques, of species behavior in small, aerodynamically simple flames. To further aid in separating behavior of coal and dry-powder inhibitors, the latter were studied in CH4-air flames.

Hydraulic fluid power systems are advantageous whenever power output must be accurately and safely controlled. The load movers, cylinders, jacks, rotary actuators and hydraulic actuators in these systems can be made to smoothly and accurately start, stop, reverse, hold position or move steadily under heavy and variable loads or torques. Because hydraulic systems are simple, compact, reliable, and low cost compared to other power methods and because they can deliver controlled power anywhere on the machine to which a hose can be routed, they are a pan of almost every type of machine found on a coal mining section. Some of the functions they perform are positioning drill booms, driving drill pots on roof bolters, positioning curter booms, raising, lowering, and swinging conveyors, driving conveyors on continuous miners, raising, lowering, and applying sustained loads to longwall roof supports, and advancing the face conveyor and roof supports in longwall mining operations.

This report is the result of information obtained from a review of related literature, personal inquiry and on-site examination of active surface coal mining operations. Four improved surface coal mine systems are described in detail and evaluated for feasibility, implementation requirements, environmental benefit and costs. Engineering feasibility emphasizes equipment availability, compliance to design requirements, practicality and industry rating. Implementation potential emphasizes immediacy, ease, acceptability and constraints. Special attention was given to environmental responsiveness, both with regard to the solutions to mined-land reclamation problems and to the concurrency of reclamation. Each system description includes a hypothetical model mine with a depreciation schedule, capital summary, estimated annual production costs, sales price computation, production and operating cost summary, and a sensitivity analysis of mine price to stripping ratio. A program plan and time schedule for demonstrating a selected mining system covers site selection criteria, mine data collection, criteria for controlling and budgeting costs and reporting findings. Ten additional mining methods and techniques are briefly described and evaluated. Common reclamation problems are listed and described. Sixteen state reclamation laws and regulations are abstracted. Sixty-nine references are listed in the bibliography.

For more than 10 years coke-oven technologists have been investigating the expanding properties of coal on a scale larger than that afforded by laboratory test tubes. Koppers 4/ was among the first to realize that coals can not be differentiated satisfactorily with respect to expansion in coke ovens by the simpler test-tube methods; in his first method 80 grains of fine coal were coked in a cylinder heated from the bottom, so that the zone of fusion (plastic layer) advanced from the bottom to the top. The scale of test was too small; it has been modified by other investigators, but without significant improvement in practical application of the results. Somewhat later Koppers and Jendne 5/ experimented with a small-scale coke even, one wall of which was movable, in which the layer-coking in a coke oven could be simulated closely. This oven was heated from both sides. Their results with this oven showed a peak in the time-pressure curves near the end of the coking, period when the two plastic layers, advancing from opposite walls, meet. They also found that although the smaller oven was heated from one side only and did not show the Pressure peak characteristic of two-sided heating, it still gave results entirely too high. Russell built an oven similar to the movable-wall oven of Koppers and Jenkner and compared results obtained in it on Beckley expanding coal with these obtained on the some coal in the Altieri 7/ small-scale apparatus. Both tests were conducted at the same constant pressure, but heating was from two sides in Russell's oven and from one side in the Altieri tester. Russell found that the two types of test gave comparable results under constant pressure conditions even though the heating procedures were quite different. He showed later, however, that a "borderline" coal 8/ that contracted in the Altieri tester at constant pressure developed a peak pressure of 4 pounds per square inch in the movable-wall oven heated from both sides at constant volume. He concluded from this that testing at constant volume gave results more accurately indicative of dangerous expansion tendencies than those at constant pressure. He also found that heating from both sides in this oven gave higher pressure than heating from one side only.

"SUMMARYThe quality of Moose Creek coal is considered superior to that of any now being produced in the Matanuska field of Alaska. In rank it is classed as roar coking high-volatile B bituminous coal.At present the Moose -Creek mines are accessible from the Glenn highway by 6 miles of well-maintained gravel road. The nearest railroad loading point is Moose Creek siding; 7 miles by road from the Buffalo mine. Palmer, 12 miles south of Buffalo mine, is the nearest town. Anchorage is 50 miles south of Palmer by road and-railroad.Core drilling and trenching by the Bureau of Mines revealed 2,375,500 short tons of coal in the Buffalo series on the Buffalo Coal Co. leasehold. Of this, 514,200 tons is considered measured coal and 489,900 tons indicated coal. Existence of deeper beds over the same length increased the tonnage of coal of all categories to 3,279,300 tons. The property has an assumed life, of 16 to 22 years, depending on the number of beds mined, based on an output of 500 tons of coal a day and 100-percent recovery. Coal from some of the beds car be marketed without washing however, a washery is necessary if all beds are mined. Beds in the Buffalo series not mined in the ""first mining"" will be irrecoverable at any later date.The Bureau of Mines completed exploration of approximately one-third of the local coal-bearing areas during 1943. Knowledge gained from this work makes it possible to investigate the rest of the area by drilling an estimated additional 5,000 foot of hole."

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°. This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

This report documents the program conducted to demonstrate the application of a flywheel-powered propulsion system to underground mining shuttle cars. Such application can replace the present electrical trailing cable common to most shuttle cars and thereby eliminate those safety hazards, maintenance problems, and haulage route limitations inherent in the trailing cable. Described are the activities undertaken to specify and design a flywheel of optimum size, shape, and material; to identify the best concepts of input and output systems; and to achieve installation of the power package into a shuttle car. The resultant Flywheel-Powered Shuttle Car is an FMC Model 6L shuttle car, 6-ton capacity, 20-ton gross vehicle weight, powered by a flywheel system with 4.5-kilowatt-hour usable energy. The completed vehicle was delivered to the Bureau of Mines in Bruceton, Pennsylvania, for testing and evaluation.

"In November 1942, a preliminary report on the Swartz Mining District by John H. Soule, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, recommended an exploratory program of diamond drilling. The existence of zinc and lead deposits in this region had been known for many years. In 1943 and 1944, the Federal Geological Survey made a detailed study of the same area. Later work done by the Bureau of Mines in this district followed the suggestions made by these geologists.3/In the latter part of 1944, Felix A. Vogel, Jr., another Bureau engineer, made a study of the Grey Eagle mine in the Kingston Mining District, a few miles northeast of the Swartz district, and his recommendations for diamond drilling were followed in so far as funds permitted. Drilling was started in October 1943 and was completed in June 1945.4/In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the .Bureau of Mines 'Ms as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution t national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. INTERNATIONAL conferences on safety in mines originated in 1912 when, in response to an invitation issued by the United States, representatives of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, and Germany participated in a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pa The record shows that a permanent organization was proposed to be developed through. diplomatic channels. However, the advent of war 2 years later prevented this proposal from coming to fruition. No further cooperation between the Bureau of Mines and a group having: similar interests in a foreign country took place until 1924, when formal cooperation with the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain was established. Interchange of personnel and results of research under that arrangement have resulted in a number of publications in both countries and more rapid advance in knowledge than could have been obtained through the same efforts exerted independently.
