Inhibitors are used in coal mines as a precaution against accidental dust explosions. Although rock dust is the usual inhibitor many others have been tested. To facilitate testing a screening process using laser irradiation was proposed. The procedure includes irradiation of a coal-dust mixture followed by mass-spectrometric analysis of the evolved gases and an evaluation of the flammability characteristics of the gases. Carbonate-type inhibitors decreased the percentage of combustibles in the gases generated and inhibitors like NaCI (thermally stable salts) decreased the total gas generated. A suitable test procedure did not result from the investigation, demonstrating the inadequacy of fast heating, non-combustive techniques in rating inhibitors of coal dust explosions.

RIGHT OF LIFE TENAN1' TO OPEN MINES. The common-law rule that a life tenant was not permitted to open or share in mines does not prevail in Michigan; but a life tenant by dower right is permitted to share in the royalties, as the strict common- law rule is not in harmony with the spirit of our institutions and the policy of our law and would often result in defeating the purposes of dower statutes. Poole v. Union Trust Co. (Michigan), 157 Northwestern 430, p. 432, March, 1916. SALE AND CONVEYANCE. PURCHASE OF ENTIRE ESTATE--FRAUD. A purchase of land where no exceptions or reservations of minerals were made and the land was bought as property, when nothing is excepted and no qualifications or reservations are embodied in the agreement, was presumptively and by common understanding a purchase of the property in its entirety; and the insertion in the deed of a reservation of mineral rights in violation of the contract of purchase and without the grantee's knowledge or consent was fraudulent. RESERVATION OF MINERALS--EXTENT AND EFFECL A reservation in a conveyance of land excepting and reserving to the grantor all coals and mines beneath the surface with the sole right and privilege to remove the same, is not as broad as the grant itself. A contract for the purchase of a mine recited that a deed had been executed by the owner and placed in escrow to so remain until the sum of $30,000 should be paid. The contract provided that $1,200 of the purchase price was to be paid in cash, $800 in 60 days, and the remainder out of 20 per cent of the gross output of the mine, such per cent to be paid in five years unless the vein and value of ore should not continue in depth, in which event the purchaser was to have two years longer to complete the payment of the purchase price. The contract contained other covenants to the effect that the purchasing corporation would fit up a certain specified mill and would continue development work at such rate as to keep the mill in operation if ores sufficiently valuable should be found and in the absence of unavoidable accident. The contract also provided 1/ that abandonment of work for a period of six months at anyone time, except as above, on said property," should operate as a forfeiture of the purchaser's right. In an action by the vendor to quiet the title to the land and to have the contract declared void, the court found that the purchaser failed to perform the work on the property and failed to place thereon the improvements as required by the contract and permitted debts to accumulate against the property, taxes to be levied thereon, and that for more than a year the purchaser had not done any work or labor of any sort upon the mine or premises, and that the contract contemplated development work from the time the purchaser took possession of the property, or at least promptly thereafter, and the fact that no machinery was in place for a year or more after the execution of the contract was a breach of the covenant of continued development, and that the clause in the contract" except as above" does not contemplate a delay in the development resulting from a failure to install machinery, but it means that unless prevented by unavoidable accidents the purchaser shouLdhave no valid excuses for neglecting the work for a period of six months or more.

The Territory of Afars and Issas is to receive its independence from France on June 27, 1977. The Territory's economic income was based on entrepôt trade through the port of Djibouti and trans-shipment of goods on the Chemin de Fer Franco-Ethiopian (CFE) railroad. The Territorial budget was scheduled to in- crease from $32.6 million3 in 1976 to $36 million in 1977, despite severe shortfalls in 1976 stemming from inflation and a persistent balance-of-trade deficit. Subsidies from France continued to sustain the economy, and the French pledged to provide approximately $140 million in aid annually after independence. In 1976, financial agreements were concluded with a number of Arab oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia which granted $10 million toward development projects. The new Republic of Djibouti is scheduled to become the 49th member State of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the 21st member of the Arab League, and to receive aid from their financial institutions. This roper, written after completion of that study, describes s the work and summarizes the data obtained. When the study of roof movement as begun at Crucible two ideas were advanced on decay Of timber by some of the officials: (1) That timber decay vas unusually rapid in the Crucible mine, and (2) that timber coated with rock dust decayed more rapidly than those teat were not so coated. There yore no records by which these ideas could be tested, and it appeared wise to make a limited; investigation particularly of the effect of rock dusting on decay, as rock dusting is an important means of preventing coal-dust explosions.]

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses owing to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rock fall hazard. Rock falls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings has an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orienting the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and off-setting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, axisymmetric and plane joint, and a three-dimensional joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

The development of the Seminole area into one of the major oil-producing sections of the country has been accompanied by many innovations and departures from former methods of development. On July 1, 1929, two years and nine months from the date of discovery, 20,490 acres were considered proved, and additional acreage is constantly being developed. Because of its peculiar conditions, extent, and rapid rate of development, the Seminole area provided numerous problems, the solution of which necessitated research in connection with practical field operation; as a result, there was a radical departure from methods usually employed in the development of a new field in the Mid-Continent area.

[The Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of lines, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, has completed a detailed investigation of the physical and chemical properties of western cokes made or used in the Pacific Northwest, as evaluated by standard methods. 4/ One of the chemical properties determined, to which more or less importance has been attached, was reactivity or combustibility. As no standardized procedure is available, it was necessary to develop a workable method for evaluating this property. The combustibility of coke is usually measured by the formation of carbon dioxide with time at a particular temperature or by the reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide. Analysis of the resulting gases commonly is required to evaluate the result. The method described in this paper is simple and direct in that the sample of coke or other carbonaceous material is weighed as it burns; the loss in weight and time is indicated by a balance and clock arrangement. Gas analyses are not rewired. Methods similar in principle have been used by Tu, Davis, and Hottel6/ and by Oshima and Fukuda7/ for determining the combustion rate of carbon and for studying the effect of ash on combustion characteristics. The coal reserve base in the Western United States is presented for coalbeds amenable to extraction by underground mining methods. The Federal Bureau of Mines has abstracted data on the quality and quantity of coal resources/reserves from numerous State and Federal publications and modified such data as necessary to allow computer storage and retrieval. Tonnages are compiled by State, county, coalbed, and rank, and allotted to sulfur categories by statistical apportionment. The coal reserve base in those States west of the Mississippi River, amenable to underground mining, is estimated to be approximately 131 billion tons. Of this total, about 30.8 billion tons are bituminous coal, 100.2 billion tons are subbituminous coal, and 126.4 million tons are anthracite. Lignite is not considered for underground mining in this report. Included in this report is a glossary of terms applicable to a classification system for coal resources and reserves as jointly defined by the Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The purpose of this system is to provide for direct comparison or compilation of various resource/reserve data.

In an attempt to develop technology to use domestic resources in place of imported bauxita, the Bureau of Mines investigated sulfurous acid leaching to extract alumina from kaolin. The process consists of leaching the calcined kaolin with a 30 wt-pct S02 solution at 60° C and 160 psig for 17 hours, fil¬tering the leach slurry, precipitating monobasic aluminum sulfite from the filtrate at 110° C and 60 psig, a& decomposing the sulfite in the spent liq¬uor at 150° C and 55 psig to produce crude alumina. Purification of the crude alumina was accomplished using a modified Bayer process. Results from closed-circuit tests employing the sulfurous acid process showed that overall extraction of alumina from kaolin was 67 pct. Production of 1 ton of alumina would require 3.6 tons of calcined kaolin, 0.7 ton of sul¬fur dioxide, and 8.4 tons of water. After purification by a modified Bayer process, the alumina product contained the following; impurities, expressed in weight-percent: Fa203, 0.009; S, 3.6; Si02, 0.07; Ti02, 0.002; K20, 0.017; and P205, 0.03.

"This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a fluorite deposit near Vado, N. Mex. Results of trenching are given. Together with analyses made upon samples of the ore. The Federal Geological Survey3/ completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the summer of 1944. A Bureau engineer examined the deposit in August 1944. As a result of these investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves. Exploratory work was recommended to obtain information that might possibly lead to production from the property. Assistance was given the Bureau by the Geological Survey.A gasoline-powered air compressor, other equipment, and supplies were delivered to the property from January 20 to 25, 1943. Trenching began under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer on January 25, 1947, and ended on March 15, 1945. The results of trenching and sampling form he basis of this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. IT is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, R.G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervisions of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

One phase of this investigation is the burning of coal on an automatic stoker to gain the advantages of control, constant rate of application of heat, and ability to burn cheaper coal than can be used in the hand—fired furnaces of kilns. It a stoker in to be used it is desirable that the coot of the installation should be low, the control of operation simple, and the distribution of heat in the kiln as good or better than with hand firing. These desiderata were sought in the stoker and furnaces that were used for the tests described herein. The tests were made to determine whether it is feasible to fire a large kiln with a single stoker, whether the use of a single furnace simplifies control, and whether the admission of all the hot gam at the center of the kiln will give symmetrical distribution of heat."

In 1980, gold, silver, and pit and quarry construction materials were the principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji. The combined value of these minerals totaled some $7.2 million,2 over 85% of all mineral production, Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products continued to increase, but gold and silver production from Fiji's only operating mine declined slightly from the previous year's level. Mineral exploration has been carried out by U.S., Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and South African companies since the early 1960's, and a high level of activity was maintained throughout 1980. At the end of 1980, some 40 mineral prospecting licenses covering over 4,300 square kilometers were in force, and 19 applications were under consideration by the Mineral Resources Department. Total expenditures by mining companies on land base projects exceeded $6 million in 1980.

There are no identified mineral resources in the Italian Peak RARE II areas, and there are no producing or developing mines within or adjacent to the study area. Several prospects are in RARE II area M-4945, Idaho, but none were found in the area I-1945, Montana. The Viola Mine (fig. 1, no. 15) vicinity and the Heart Mountain vicinity along the west and south borders, respectively, are being prospected. There has been no recorded production from mines within the study area, but between $2.5 million and $5.0 million worth of lead, silver, and zinc were produced in the adjacent Birch Creek district - dominantly from the Viola Mine - from 1882 to 1889 (Anderson and Wagner, 1944, p. 14). The Viola and other mines in that district are possibly, on basin-margin, carbonate-hosted, lead-silver-zinc deposits stratabound within the Devonian Jefferson Formation. Previous studies have considered them to be hydrothermal, replacement orebodies. Mineral occurrences in the Heart Mountain area are possibly black-shale hosted uranium-vanadium deposits in the Mississippian-Devonian McGowan Creek Formation or perhaps the underlying Devonian Three Forks Formation. The Jefferson and McGowan Creek Formations underlie many scattered segments of the study area. The deposits and occurrence; are not sufficiently exposed to determine tonnage and grade, but sampling indicated moderate resource potential at two properties just outside the study area, the Viola Mine and the Elkhorn Group (fig. 1, no. 33). Local residents indicated there are several thousand tons of zinc-bearing resource; at the Viola line. This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Britannia concentrator, Britannia Beach, B. C., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The concentrator treats copper ore at the present rate of 6,000 to 7,000 tons of dry ore daily and produces copper concentrate and pyrite concentrate by selective flotation methods. The copper concentrate is smelted and the pyrite product is utilized for acid manufacture.
