A moderate thermophilic microorganisms, has been isolated (45?) from a typical sulphide mine in the region of Mo Jiang located in the southwest of China. The culture has been used to extract copper from chalcopyrite concentrates obtained from De Xing copper mine. The majority of experiments were carried out in 300mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 150mL volumes of mineral suspension. Effects of some variable parameters such as solids concentration, pH and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite obtained from De Xing copper mine were investigated. For a given concentrate the most important factor affecting the fractional copper extraction was the size of the mineral particles. The overall rate of leaching was found to be limited by the area of mineral surface. The attack started in cracks and genetic defects and finally reached the whole chalcopyrite surface. As a consequence of this, the ore showed strongly cracks. The additive of ferrous sulfate increases the bacteria activity, but did not improve chalcopyrite bioleaching. The results indicate that the nature and relative proportions of the various minerals present have been shown to be important factors.

The lack of fresh water sources, particularly in the Northern part of Chile, has driven the mine sites to search for new and sustainable paths to obtain water resources to run minerals processing operations. Among them, the use of seawater in concentrators appears as an interesting solution to this problem. However, the presence of seawater will have an impact onto the operation, not only because it will enhance corrosion reactions in the equipment installed in a plant, but also because it may affect how particles will effectively be processed across the numerous unit operations existing in the mine site. Among such unit operations, the grinding stage is a highly regarded as it defines the success of the separation of valuable minerals from gangue material in the froth flotation operation. Then, one important aspect to be addressed is to understand how the presence of seawater will affect the different mechanisms acting during the operation of a ball mill. The aim of this research work is to assess the effect of changing the aqueous matrix from process water to seawater in ball mills onto the mill performance. The methodology considered the use of Fluent® software and its capabilities to run numerical simulations with heterogeneous media. On one hand, from the data analysis, it is possible to infer that breakability mechanisms should not be significantly affected. On the other hand, the high ionic strength of the matrix should impact importantly particle transport mechanisms within the mill. Particularly, when transporting finer particles. Rheology results were in agreement with previous published research studies suggesting the suspensions to behave as Newtonian, Dilatant o Pseudo-plastic fluid depending on the amount of fine particles present in the grinding media. The latter will result in changes in the residence time of particles in the mill producing overgrinding or an excess in the circulating loads.

The establishment of grind size that optimally liberates the valuable mineral for efficient down-stream processing is of great importance for most mineral processing operations. Reasonably accurate comminution models as well as models of downstream separation processes may be found in the literature but their use in optimizing grind size is limited without an associated liberation model. In this work, an attempt has been made to address the above shortcoming by demonstrating how the effective parameters of the downstream flotation process may be predicted from the liberation characteristics based on the ore texture data for a disseminated nickel ore. In this regard, the liberation model based on linear intercept distributions of mineral and gangue proposed by King (1979) and its application to predict the flotation performance of an industrial plant demonstrated by Schaap (1979) may be considered useful contributions. However, while the model proposed by Schaap is simplistic enough, it is based on several assumptions due to the non-availability of intercept length measurements on the parent rock, in particular, on the extent of mineral exposure on the surface of comminuted particles. In this work, the linear mineral and gangue intercepts on polished specimens of a binary ore, comprising darker pentlandite as the valuable mineral and lighter barren host rock were measured using an image analyser. The resulting intercept distributions followed negative exponential distributions. Using the mean sizes of mineral and gangue intercepts, the proportion of liberated, compo-site and mineral occluded particles of a given size, the extent of mineral exposure on the surface of particles and their mean mineral contents were calculated using principles of renewal theory. The rock was then crushed and ground and different size fractions were floated. It has been shown that the parameters of observed recovery data based on 1st order kinetics such as the associated rate constant and ultimate recovery agrees well with those predicted from the quantities calculated above. This work has important practical implications since it can indicate variations in flotation performance arising from changes in mineralization within a large ore body.

Micro-flotation tests of spodumene, beryl, quartz and feldspar have been carried out by using CaCl2 and FeCl3 as modifiers and a blending collector of oleic acid and hydroximic acid. CaCl2 shows efficient activation for spodumene when pH is above 11.5, and FeCl3 exhibits a markedly activation and good selectivity for spodumene in the range of pH 4 to 10. The main species of CaCl2 are CaOH+ and Ca(OH)2 when pH is above 11.5, and the main species of FeCl3?6H2O are Fe(OH)+2 and Fe(OH)3 during the pH range of 4 to 10. A selective flotation of spodumene and beryl from pegmatic ore had also been completed while using FeCl3?6H2O as activator and the blending collector. A bulk concentrate containing 1.087% BeO and 4.70% Li2O has also been obtained in the flotation of spodumene and beryl from pegmatic ore assaying 0.097% BeO and 0.45% Li2O, and the recoveries of BeO and Li2O in concentrate are 74.38% and 69.50% respectively.

Pregnant leach solutions from waste of printed circuit boards (WPCB) leaching contain many impurity metals (Fe in particular) at significant levels. These impurities should be reduced to acceptable levels to avoid problems in downstream recovery processes e.g., low current efficiencies in electro-winning of copper from sulfate solutions in the presence of ferric. In this study, removal of iron in the form of goethite from synthetic (30 g/L Cu2+ and 1 M SO42-) and real leach solutions of WPCB was studied in some detail. The influences of initial concentration of iron (1-4.5 g/L Fe3+), pH (2.5-4.0), temperature (80-90°C) and seeding (23.5 g/L) were investigated over a period of 4 h. A significant increase in the iron precipitation was observed (i.e., from 68% to 96% over 4 h) with rising the pH from 2.5 to 4.0. The addition of seeds had also increased the removal rate over 4 h albeit to a limited extent i.e., from 96% to 99%. For the real leach solutions of sulfate (H2SO4-H2O2) and sulfate/chloride leaching (H2SO4-CuSO4-NaCl), precipitation of iron was found to be 63-73% (pH 2.5) and 93-98% (pH 4.0), respectively. The precipitates were further characterised by SEM-EDS analysis which showed the presence of copper (1-25%) in the precipitates indicating significant copper co-precipitation from the solution. These copper losses can be attributed to the formation of copper compounds such as anthlerite and brochantite within the range of pH (2.5-4.0) tested. This study showed that iron can be readily removed from synthetic/real leach solutions of WPCBs to a large extent (=93%) at the expense of high copper losses particularly at pH 4.0.

"Comparison of the two most commonly used classes of depressant in the South African platinum industry is complicated by the fact that these polymers induce different effects on the surfaces onto which they adsorb. The use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which is ionically charged in solution, can lead to increased particle dispersion in addition to the effect of reduced surface hydrophobicity (depression). Guar is typically only slightly charged in solution. Comparison of these two depressants is complicated since it is uncertain whether differences in their action is a result of either depression of dispersion effects.This work investigates the role of dispersion independently to that of depression in the batch flotation of a platinum bearing ore. An inorganic dispersant, sodium hexametaphosphate (NaHMP) was added in parallel to the uncharged guar depressant to simulate the action of depressants with varying degrees of dispersion. By distinguishing between the material recovered by entrainment and the floatable gangue and by including the effects of froth stability it was possible to decouple the effects of dispersion and depression.The results show that both dispersion and depression led to increased grade of the sulphide minerals. Depression leads to a decreased recovery of floatable gangue minerals. Dispersion leads to an increased recovery rate of these minerals and an accompanying decrease in froth stability."

Calcium sulfate whiskers are considered to be a prosperous reinforced material in application due to their high mechanical properties. But the hydration occurs easily at moist atmosphere or in aqueous solution. The surface topographies of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the hydrates were analyzed by on-line observation and using XRD. The results indicated the transformation of the crystal type and shape of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the reduction of whiskers? aspect ratio. The hydration process of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the effective parameters were further discussed based on FT-IR measurements. The conclusions were obtained that the hydration of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers can be divided into the three phases, namely, initial hemihydration phase, dehydration phase, and coarsening, dissolving and the re-formation of calcium sulfate dehydrate crystal phase. In addition, it was found that in the hydration process of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers the calcium sulfate dihydrate whiskers are formed at first and then converted into the calcium sulfate dihydrate with different crystal shapes, but in the hydration of gypsum hemihydrate the gypsum dihydrate is formed without transition products. The surface active site-calcium ion which has strong trend to react with H2O, the surface ?OH and the inner channels are considered to play important roles in the hydration process of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers.

"It was identified that clay minerals adversely affect fine coal flotation through slime coatings. In the study, it was interesting to find that an anionic polymer dispersant, lignosulfonate, successfully mitigated the negative effect of clay minerals in coal flotation using fresh water, but in saline water, it exacerbated coal flotation.In order to understand the mechanisms underpinning the different behaviour of lignosulfonate in coal flotation using fresh and saline water, the adsorption isotherm, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements were conducted in this study. While DLS monitored the molecular conformation change (swelling or shrinking) of the polymer in fresh and saline water, adsorption isotherms enabled polymer adsorbed amount on clay and coal mineral surfaces to be determined. It was found that lignosulfonate adsorbed on the coal and clay mineral surfaces providing effective electrostatic repulsions and resulting in a mitigation of clay minerals from coal surfaces in deionised water. In the presence of saline water, however, polymer molecular conformation changed. Polymer molecules were compressed and adsorbed in form of aggregates. The adsorption amount of lignosulfonate on clay minerals increased in saline water. A low dosage of lignosulfonate could not provide sufficient electrosteric repulsion to disperse clay minerals. Moreover, the high adsorption amount of the polymer on coal and clay surfaces led to a more hydrophilic coal surface, and coal flotation was therefore depressed in saline water. This study provides a new insight into understanding the role of anionic polymeric dispersants in mineral flotation using different quality water."

"In order to exploit lower grade and complex platinum group metal resources, cheaper and more efficient alternatives to the conventional mill-float-smelt-refine route are being sought, particularly for resources’ in areas that are water-scarce and where electrification is costly and problematic. Leaching with cyanide is a promising process option and although recoveries are lower than in the conventional process routes, progress into the understanding of cyanide leaching of PGM containing ore and concentrate has been made. Research regarding the feasibility of upgrading the pregnant PGM leach solution using activated carbon has, however, been lacking and hence forms the focus of this paper. Bottle roll adsorption tests for dilute PGM solutions (0.15ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) onto granular activated carbon showed high rates within the first 60 minutes (giving more than 90% recovery of precious metals). Comparison of the Pt isotherm to Au isotherms from literature indicated a similar loading capacity, while that of Pd was found to be significantly lower. The effects of solution pH, temperature, base metal concentration, free cyanide concentration, thiocyanate concentration, initial PGM concentration and activated carbon concentration were investigated and are discussed. Elution of the Pt and Pd, with the AARL elution process, was found to be effective with recoveries of 95% after 5 bed volumes of eluant at the optimum pre-treatment concentrations and a temperature of 80°C. Temperature, NaCN and NaOH pre-treatment concentration and the ionic strength of the eluant were found to be the most important factors affecting elution while base metals concentration, acid-pre-treatment, carbon loading and thiocyanate concentrations to a lesser extent. Simplified combined flow sheets are suggested and the corresponding mass balances are compared."

Understanding how cationic surfactants affect the interfacial behavior of quartz is important in mineral processing and environmental engineering. This paper presents the results of a study of the effect of the molecular structure of cationic surfactants on the interfacial behavior of finely ground natural quartz. Most of the experimental work involved the determination of zeta potentials and the stability of quartz suspensions. Some measurements of induction times and the flotation response of coarser particles are also included. How these surfactants affect interfacial behavior is discussed in terms of adsorption mechanisms. The molecular structure (number of hydrocarbon chains, type of ionic head group, number of ionic head groups on the molecule) of these reagents was found to significantly affect their surface activity.

Copper concentration is becoming more difficult because remaining copper ores are more complex and of finer copper mineral grain size, making copper minerals harder to float because of the fine particle size required to liberate the valuable species. The purpose of this work was to study the flotation behavior of fine copper sulfide ores at different conditions of agitation and aeration. The experimental campaign was carried out in a laboratory Denvertype flotation cell of 1 L volume modified to be operated with forced air that allows decoupling air flow rate and agitation speed. Four ore samples from Chile were used, all of them containing copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, and tennantite, but with varying grain sizes and compositions. Preliminary flotation tests for establishing the flotation conditions of grinding size and collector dosage were conducted before the kinetic flotation tests that were carried out at different agitation speeds varying from 900 to 1300 rpm for gas flow rate ranging from 1.6 to 7.2 L/min. The flotation products were analyzed by ICP-MS and MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyzer). The results showed that high agitation speeds with corresponding air flow rates resulted in better recovery than moderate agitation speed and air flow rate, and an excess in gas flow rate resulted in bad performances. The flotation rates of the fine copper minerals were improved despite the different improvement rates among the fine size fractions. The impact of these operational variables, however, was different when comparing the results for the four ore samples. While it was found that the order of floatability in the four samples was the same, that is, chalcocite > tennantite > bornite > chalcopyrite, the kinetic constants of the copper minerals in the samples were different, indicating that mineral composition in the sample affects the flotation kinetics.

Tantalum capacitor is a small-sized and has large capacity, and is indispensable for electric equipment. The demand increases year by year, and a quite large number of used tantalum capacitors is generated. Recovery of tantalum from tantalum condenser is recently important since production of tantalum have not been stable for the price and the quality. However, recovery of tantalum from tantalum-condenser is difficult since tantalum parts strongly cover with the flame retardant resin made of halogenated compound (mold resin). This research investigated recovery of tantalum parts from tantalum condenser using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate. Mixed molten carbonate (Na2CO3:K2CO3:Li2CO3 = 1:1:1) (3 g) put into the reactor, and heated with electric furnace while flowing nitrogen (160 mL/min) and steam (1 mL/min) warmed by heater. After heating to setting temperature (450 - 650 oC), tantalum condenser (3 g) was put into the reactor, heated for 5-10 min, and then cooled to room temperature to recover the reacted capacitor by filtration after treating with distilled water. At relatively low temperature (550 oC) heating for 10 min, mold resin can be decomposed by using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate, in comparison with using pyrolysis and steam gasification without carbonate, and decomposition reaction occurred over 500 oC by using steam gasification with mixed carbonate. Recovery of tantalum parts from capacitor is successful using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate at 530 oC for 5 min, due to the effective decomposition and removal of mold resin from capacitor. Furthermore, most halogen gas generated from decomposition of mold resin can be trapped in molten carbonate not to exhaust halogen gas. These results suggested that recovery process of tantalum parts from used condenser using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate is expected as a feasible way to recycle the rare metal in electric equipment.

"Efficient flocculation is important to thickener performance, affecting the overflow clarity, solids settling flux, underflow density and operability. Many factors affect flocculation; from the material/flocculant type, dilution of the feed and flocculant solution, mixing, to the shear rate and shear history. The flocculant addition point (or points) can be used as a tuning method to alter the effective flocculation time in a feedwell, with addition further up the feed pipe increasing the residence time but making the aggregates more prone to breakup if they experience high shear later in the process. Conversely, adding the flocculant later, eg under the feedwell shelf decreases the mixing time but allows some free (unadsorbed) flocculant to be available at the feedwell exit. An extensive trial has been performed on an operating thickener comparing seven individual different flocculant dosing positions through a Vane feedwell, and some combinations of two dosing points simultaneously. Measurements of the velocity, solids concentration and aggregate size were made throughout the feedwell at the different positions, with the dosing points significantly changing the aggregate size and clarity, and also affecting the solids concentration at some positions. The results are accessed in terms of flocculation kinetics and used as CFD validation data."

In the flotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions not only ionic strength but also chemical composition, flotation pH and mineral properties play an important role. As a result an improvement or depression may be observed. A strong improvement in the floatability of hydrophobic bituminous coals and other inherently hydrophobic minerals is characteristic for the "salt flotation process", which is carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions at natural pH and without addition of any flotation reagents. However, pH is a key factor when saline and hipersaline waters with hydrolyzing metallic ions are used as process water. In the case of flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores in seawater, molybdenite is strongly depressed by the Mg2+ hydrolysis products when pH is raised to depress pyrite. Process water with a high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, and this also includes seawater, have deleterious effect on the anionic flotation of industrial minerals with fatty acids. The flotation of potash ores is carried out in NaCl-KCl saturated brine (6-7 mole/L of NaCl and KCl) with the use of long-chain amines. Such a high electrolyte concentration changes dramatically the amine Krafft point making the collector insoluble in brine; its mode of action entirely differs from that in conventional flotation processes.

"The aim of this study is to solve the problem of tungsten leaching from scheelite concentrate using sodium hydroxide in the presence of phosphate by an autoclaving process, which is one of main development techniques for tungsten recovery. To understand the applicability and leaching performance of tungsten leaching from scheelite concentrate, the main work is to investigate the effects of leaching parameters such as initial concentrations of NaOH and Na3PO4, reaction temperature, stirring speed, liquid-to-solid ratio and reaction time on WO3 dissolution rate to obtain the optimal leaching conditions. The chemical composition and phase composition of the samples were evaluated by means of XRF and XRD. The content of WO3 in the leaching residue obtained via washing, filtering and drying was analyzed by thiocyanate spectrometric method. The optimal leaching conditions were found to be NaOH concentration of 6.76 mol·L-1, Na3PO4 concentration of 1.35 mol·L-1, reaction temperature of 180°C, stirring speed of 400 rpm, liquid-to-solid ratio of 2.0 and reaction time of 90 min. The results showed that tungsten leaching rate of 99.20% was reached under the optimal conditions. The technology exhibited superior leaching performance, which not only reduced the consumption of sodium hydroxide but also greatly decreased reaction time in comparison to a conventional autoclaving process. The chief raw materials for the production of tungsten in nature are wolframite and scheelite [4, 5]. Among them, approximately two-thirds of the tungsten reserves contain scheelite deposits in the world [6, 7]. With the progressive exhaustion of high-quality wolframite resources, scheelite has become a predominant primary resource for the production of tungsten [8, 9]."

A significant part of the currently production of the non-ferrous and precious metals is from sulfide ores. Character feature of sulfide ores is the presence in them always pyrite and wide range of different sulfide minerals else. These minerals are the carriers of valuable for industry metals. Due to the low content of the main components, very often call on the use of collective- selective flow-sheets. The extraction of minerals in the collective concentrates determined in a large extent the effectiveness of the collective-selective sheets. In conditions of bulk flotation kinetics to floatate of the various minerals is different. Due to why it is and how it can be used for a more effective selection of minerals ?this is the main task of this report. For this purpose are used results from the bulk flotation of pyrite, copper sulfides, molybdenite, galena, blenda. It is separated and place of host rocks. Base it of large experimentation material, including both electro-kinetic measurements of mineral systems, as well as laboratory flotation tests and factories monitoring it is established kinetics of flotation of mineral particles in conditions of collective flotation. Made an effort to clarify the effect as of the species and the proportion of different sulfide minerals involved in flotation pulp else. Traced was the impact of the density and aeration of the flotation pulp on deferens in kinetics of mineral flotation in condition of balk flotation. The obtained results are used to increase the efficiency of the diffraction flotation of the complex sulfide ores containing precious metals. Coal mining activity is inextricably connected to waste production. These include coal slurries deposited in environment. Current knowledge in the field of mining and especially mineral processing allows extracting valuable fuel from deposit coal slurries. The article discusses of previous works devoted to coal slurries inventory in Jankowice Mine in Poland (Upper Silesia) and quality assessment of coal slurries. 12 samples of coal slurries deposited in waste pond of Jankowice Mine was taken for the investigation. The possibility of the intensification of the gravity processing of complex iron-manganese ore, which contains the finely dispersed inclusions of gold and platinum is shown. Clear mineral fractions of precious metals were sorted out of the different types of ores (quartz-braunite and carbonate- magnetite ore, ferruginous quartzite, carbon-containing shale, breccia-limestone and dolomite breccia). Composition and structures of precious-metals particles was detailed. The industrial content of platinum and gold was found. Precious-metals mineralization is character for all types of ores. High content of platinum is indicated in the carbonate-magnetite (up to 11.3 mg/kg) and quartz –braunite (up to 10 mg/kg) types of ore. Gold is presented in the ferruginous quartzite (up to 1.29 mg/kg) according to the data of the reduced mineralogical analysis. The composition of native platinum depends on the type of the ores: 1) quartz-braunite type contains isoferroplatinum (Pt3Fe) with Cu, Rh, Ir, Ru; 2) carbonate-magnetite type contains isoferroplatinum with Cu, Sn, Ni, Rh, Ir, Os; 3) pyritic-carbon ore contains isoferroplatinum with Sn, Ni; 4) ferruginous quartzite contains isoferroplatinum without admixtures. The ultrasonic treatment of mineral aggregates (P = 41.5 Watt, I = 15 W/cm2) made possible the liberation of fine particles of precious metals. Smooth-shaped or crystalline mineral aggregates are effectively liberated after acoustic treatment. Their surface is freed from impurities. The aggregates with the complex form and structure, which consist of the numerous plates and the grains, are not effectively liberated from impurities. It is shown that the ultrasonic treatment of aggregates with the fine inclusions of precious metals contributes to the liberation of the particles of platinum and gold and intensification of the gravity processing of refractory ore. This approach contributes the increase of the raw-material base of precious metals.

The aim of this research is to extract zinc from complex lead and zinc ore containing carbo- silicate lead and zinc minerals using sulphuric acid. Samples, taken from Dareh Zanjireh mine located in central of Iran, were subjected to leaching tests after calcination process. Experiments were planed according to the Taguchi statistical method. The calcinated samples contain 13.98% zinc and the constituting minerals being dolomite and zincate. Various parameters such as speed of mixing, temperature, time, solid to liquid ratio and pH were studied. A solid to liquid ratio of 1:6 gr/mL at 60°C and 800 rpm speed of mixing for 30 minutes resulted in a product with 85.96% zinc recoveries.

The dissemination grain size of chalcopyrite is really fine and refractory grains of -10µm take up 25%. Dissemination relationships among chalcopyrite with pyrrhotite, pyrite, marcasite and gangue minerals are complex. Content of Fe-bearing sulphides and Fe-bearing silicates associated with chalcopyrite reaches to about 60%. It’s hard to liberate and separate chalcopyrite from pyrrhotite. The above four are the main mineral processing difficulties of a copper ore in China. Because of the similar floatability and poor separation effect between chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, enhanced depressing and collecting method was adopted in Cu-S separation before 2009. Due to the different magnetism among chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and Fe-bearing silicates, magnetic separation is creatively induced in Cu floatation circuit based on the in-depth study of process mineralogy. High efficiency and new Cu-S separation technology of "Rough concentrate regrinding-pyrrhotite rejecting from middling by magnetic separation" and a highly selective copper minerals collector YL-1 had been developed to solve the difficult problems of refractory Cu-S separation, which are heavy load of middling recirculation,difficulty in upgrading Cu concentrate, unstable locked cycle and low separation indexes. And grade of Cu concentrate has been increased by 3.33%, recovery of Cu and Ag has been increased by 19.32% and 10% respectively.
