"This paper briefly describes the underground crushing and conveying system at Sherritt Gordon Mines' Ruttan Mine. A series of three steel-cord belted conveyors, with a total length of 2J55 metres and a total vertical lift of 407 metres, convey the muck from the underground crushing station to the mill at the surface. The maximum size of the crushed rock is 6 in. All the conveyors are provided with numerous safety and fire suppression devices. IntroductionThe Ruttan Mine of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited is located 20 km east of the town of Leaf Rapids, 760 km north of Winnipeg. The orebody is multilensed, with lens width varying from 6 to 45 m. Ore production started in 1973 with the opening of a 10,000-tpd open-pit mine. Initial development of the underground mine was started in 1972 with the driving of parallel conveyor and access declines at minus-2507o gradient to the I 220-m level, and then the access ramp was further extended to the 1160-m level. Exploration drifting was done on the 1280-m and 1160-m levels from the access ramp. The final development plan for the underground project was approved in January 1977, and full-scale development and constructionwere resumed.At present, Ruttan Mine is in a period of transition from open-pit to underground mining. Ore production is now coming from both operations. By mid-1980, open-pit production will cease and all production will come from the undergroundmine.The underground mining method at the Ruttan Mine is sublevel open stoping with delayed backfilling. The orebody is divided along strike into a series of 27-m-long stopes and 15-m pillars, both 60 m high."

"This paper describes the development of a process flowsheet designed to provide high dewatering rates and to bring about savings in tailing disposal costs. The flowsheet comprises a hydrocyclone, a settling cone and a thickener arranged in closed circuit. The mill tailing, after pulp density adjustment, is fed to the hydrocyclone which yields two products. The underflow product is sent to the settling cone for further dewatering. The overflow product, together with the settling cone overflow, goes to the thickener which, with the aid of flocculants, gives a clear effluent and a relatively dilute underflow. The latter combines with the original mill tailing to form the hydrocyclone feed. Solids finally leave the system in the settling cone underflow which can reach pulp densities of up to 78%, making it suitable for direct disposal or for use as mine backfill.Some discussion is included for the selection and sizing of equipment required for this process. INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an essential process for the disposal of mill tailings which forms an added burden in milling practice, often with little or no return. It is, therefore, desirable to conduct this process as economically as possible. One way of reducing costs would be to increase the rate of dewatering so that savings can be made in the size of dewatering unit s which would lead to lower capital and operating expenditures.A common method of dewatering mill tailings is gravity sedimentation which is frequently carried out with the aid of flocculation. In most cases, flocculation greatly enhances the sedimentation process, but only until a pulp density of 50% to 55% is reached in the settled material.Centrifugal sedimentation in hydrocyclones can provide high pulp densities rapidly, but does not result in a clear effluent.This paper outlines a suitable combination of gravity and centrifugal sedimentations that results in an over-all high rate of dewatering. The system developed produces a material of high pulp density while at the same time giving clear effluent."

"Selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite was studied using various surface treatment methods such as electrolysis, ozone treatment, and plasma. Oxidation via electrolysis method indicated that only chalcopyrite surface is affected by electrolysis due to conductivity difference with molybdenite. Oxidation treatments and XPS analyses indicated that chalcopyrite became hydrophilic due to deposition of oxidized iron on its surface. Various oxidizing methods also showed that chalcopyrite was selectively oxidized and this can apply selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. The possible mechanisms are proposed in this work based on surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulphide minerals often associate molybdenite (MoS2) which is one of the most important by-products (Wills, 2006). It is important to recover molybdenite perfectly not only since molybdenite is valuable mineral, but also contamination of molybdenite into copper concentrate or contamination of copper mineral into molybdenite concentrate indicates penalty for both concentrate values (Wills, 2006). Conventional separation of copper sulphide and molybdenite has been achieved with sulphide bulk flotation followed by selective molybdenite flotation with NaHS addition since NaHS works as a depressant for copper sulphide. However, this current process shows imperfect molybdenite recovery and depressant such as NaHS needs to be used under specific flotation plant since it might be environmental contaminant. Hirajima et al., (2014) have been studied selective flotation of molybdenite and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), which is the most important copper mineral, with plasma pre-treatment. They reported that plasma pre-treatment process followed by washing treatment can improve molybdenite floatability and depress chalcopyrite. This result is attributed to surface oxidation and selective conversion of chalcopyrite and molybdenite wettability. It may be hypothesized that another surface oxidation methods could give a similar result as plasma treatment process. To test this hypothesis, in this study, as comprehensive study of oxidation effect, various oxidation methods such as electrolysis, ozone, and plasma were investigated. Electrochemical measurements, thermodynamic calculations to predict the chemical reactions happened during the process, various surface analyses, and flotation experiments were carried out."

"Current practice in advanced materials processing has involved the dispersion of a second-phase, commonly SiC, glass, or other non-metallic fibres/whiskers/particulates to enhance physical characteristics of the matrix. These matrices may be either ceramic or metallic but in either case it is important that the physical and chemical properties of each phase be compatible. The dispersed, finely divided second phase is often both expensive and foreign-produced and may exhibit chemical instability at elevated temperatures. Thus, it would appear that certain naturally-occurring industrial mineral fibres/whiskers/particulates might offer an attractive and low-cost alternative. Suitable candidates, such as wollastonite and sillimanite, are available in Canada and may be milled to produce particles whose shape is appropriate for this application. It is suggested that wollastonite, in particular, may be a useful modifying agent in metal matrix composites utilizing AI, Al-Si, Zn-Al or other light metals and alloys. In addition, the possible use of these minerals in ceramic matrix materials is also addressed, with reference to a preliminary thermodynamic analysis of the systems involved.IntroductionBackgroundA composite material may be thought of as consisting of a matrix component, the properties of which are improved by the addition of a second component or dispersed phase which forms a distinct three-dimensional interface with the matrix. This matrix is commonly either metallic or ceramic, which leads to the two most popular types of composites: metal-matrix composites (MMC); and ceramic-matrix composites (CMC).Such materials are by no means new. Early composites include fiberglass, mixtures of plaster and horsehair in wall plastering, as well as use of natural materials such as bamboo in fishing rods. For the purpose of reservoir-performance calculations a balance can be made between the materials with-in the reservoir and the production from the reservoir. The material balance equation, a relationship which holds under or near equilibrium conditions, has been used in many forms by the Petroleum Engineer for the determination of initial oil-in-place in the reservoir and the calculation of performance into the future. One of the more recent methods developed by Tracy, utilizes a modified form of the Schilthuis material balance. These are shown to fall into three broad categories: short (in rod rolling); intermediate (in strip processing); and long (in plate schedules). The effects of interpass time on recrystallization and carbonitride precipitation are described, and particularly on the interaction between these two mechanisms. The interactions, in turn, determine the final microstructure produced as well as the mechanical properties.

"The recent development of the continuous casting process for steel has required basic understanding in a number of areas in the metallurgcal sciences. In some areas, information is still lacking. The success of the application of basic knowledge and research to the process is evidenced by the fact that a large percentage of the steel now produced in the world is produced by continuous casting.A number of areas in which metallurgical science has contributed and is currently contributing to better design and control of the continuous casting process and leading to a better quality product will be considered. These include:(a) heat transfer studies of the entire casting process;(b) fluid flow in the tundish, strand and liquid metal stream;(c) solidification structure and segregation;(d) strength and ductility of steel at high temperatures related to bulging and cracking; and(e) problems related to horizontal casting developments.IntroductionThe continuous casting of steel is a relatively new technology in steelmaking. It is now used extensively throughout the industry. In Japan, for example, continuous casting accounts for approximately 40010 of steel production, and this value is expected to increase to over 50% in the near future . New steel plants are now designed to use continuous casting exclusively. This means the process must work well and be completely reliable, because all the steel produced must go through the caster.The development of the continuous casting process in a short period of time has required concerted research and development in many areas . I shall cite a number of examples of these developments and refer to work done in Canada when applicable. No attempt will be made to review all of the research in continuous casting, nor refer to all of the workers in the field.The developments in continuous casting are based in many cases on metallurgical science, as described below. The use of metallurgical science in these developments is qualitative, in that concepts and idea s are used, as opposed to quantitative values calculated from fundamental equations. In general, most metallurgical problems are too complicated to enable fundamental equations to be used without the introduction of uncertain approximations and boundary conditions in the calculations.Starting at the beginning of the steelmaking process, very extensive research and development has been carried out to produce liquid steel of the required composition and temperature. The replacement of open hearth furnaces with BOF furnaces reduced refining time from many hours to roughly 30 minutes for 250 tons of steel. Two BOF furnaces effectively enable a continuous flow of steel to be available in a plant, essential for the introduction of the continuous casting process. This area of research will not be considered here."

People like to know where they stand with the boss and would like to be evaluated on what they do and accomplish, rather than on what others think or feel about them. Further, people like to be rewarded for their good results, indeed, to understand what motivates people, we must look at what happens as a result of their actions. Another belief is that supervisors often have a greater influence on the performance of their people than they fully realize. Simply letting people know how important their performance is can have an impact. "The efficiency of operation and life of an advancing longwall coalface depends, to a great extent. on the face-end roof strata conditions and the stability of the gateroads. The factors that influence the rate of closure of gateroads are examined, in particular the gateside pack and the coal rib (crush) pillars. The performance of mechanized packing systems is briefly discussed. Gateroad deformation surveys were carried out at two coal mines to determine the influence of the rib pillar width on gateroad stability; also, the influence of the gateside pack on the immediate roof and floor strata is analyzed based on strata bed displacement measurements from instruments installed in the gateroad and pack-hole of a longwall advancing face operating in a thick seam (7.55 m). Concluding, an evaluation of the fac e-end systems examined is given and recommendations made f or the most suitable rib pillar width. face-end geometry and roof strata reinforcement.IntroductionKevword s: Coal mining, Pillars, Rib pillars, Ground control, Longwall mining, Gateroads , Packing systems, Roof control. The face-end region of a longwall advancing face is the center of mining activity, being the turn-around point for the coal cutting machine. and the place of gateroad formation and movement of special face-end supports. The design of face-end layouts can be aided by knowledge of strata control parameters, such as the effective loading of the immediate roof strata , convergence of the roof and floor, magnitude and distribution of fractures in the roof strata around the face-end , optimum placement of supports, coal seam thickness and strength characteristics, geometry of layout and interaction from neighbouring workings. Generally, the gateroad is formed by one of three face-end methods: (a) advanced headings, (b) in-line system (gateroad formed at the face) or (c) conventional ripping with or without stable elimination (also halfheading). The quality of gateroad is influenced principally by the face-end system employed, standard of gateside pack and width of pillar. A good standard of gateroad is generally achieved by employing the half-heading face-end system, the gateside pack and coal rib pillar having comparative support/ yield (stiffness factor) characteristics. However, the halfheading is often not favoured due to face operation restrictions."

"In the Little Long Lac-Sturgeon River area of Thunder Bay district, Ontario, most of the known ore deposits occur in fractures, shear zones, and zones of brecciation, in folded sedimentary rocks . In two or three instances, however, deposits occur in Keewatin greenstones and in later granitic rocks of probable Algoman age.The principal regional features in the area are the long narrow bands of Keewatin volcanic rocks and Timiskaming sedimentary formations that extend east from lake Nipigon to Long Lac, a distance of about 65 miles. The belts continue to the east for many miles beyond Long Lac and probably for some distance to the west under the waters of lake Nipigon. They are intruded in places, particularly in the north, by large masses of diorite, granodiorite, and granite. Small intrusive masses of diorite and porphyry also occur in many localities throughout the area.The Little Long Lac-Sturgeon River mining area is the youngest camp in Ontario and has been in production only since 1934.The district is readily accessible from the branch line of the Canadian National railway between Longlac station on the main line and Port Arthur, and from the Trans-Canada highway No. 17. Both these means of communication traverse the area in a general east-west direction parallel with the principal structural trend of the rocks of the region.In the Little Long Lac section discoveries were made by W. W. Smith in 1931 (Hard Rock property) , by T. A. Johnson in 1932 ( Bankfield property) , by T. A. Johnson and T. Oklend in 1932 (Little Long Lac property) , by F. MacLeod and A. Cockshutt in 1933 (MacLeod-Cockshutt property) , and by George and Frank Papineau in 1935 (Hutchison Lake property).In the Sturgeon River section discoveries were made by Powers and Silam in 1925 (Northern Empire property), T. The construction and use of the B.E.T. (gas adsorption) apparatus is described. Examples are given for the determination of large and small surface areas using nitrogen and krypton. Introduction A NY study of the milling of ores from crushing to grinding, classification, and concentration and finally dewatering of the products involves solid particles which are either in contact with a gas or a liquid phase. The surface area of the solid and its characteristics constitute important parameters in all mineral dressing operations. The success of any particular operation is dependent on the interaction of the surface of the solid particles with the gas or the liquid phase. Particle size and specific surface (surface area per unit weight) continue to be important parameters in the flotation research associated with the adsorption of collector molecules or ions on mineral particles, as in the early years of mineral dressing research (1). In order to understand the mechanism of the flotation process, it is essential that the surface properties of the adsorbent be known.

"This paper is a brief overview of the role of oxygen in cyanide leaching of gold feeds (e.g. ore, concentrate). As the majority of gold occurs in the elemental state (Au °), its oxidation is of vital importance for dissolution in the cyanide lixiviant. The cyanidetion at high pH is favourable for the oxidation of Au° with a mild oxidant such as air or oxygen. Beside oxidation of gold, deleterious effects of soluble sulphides, arsenates, antimonates on cyanidation of gold can be alleviated by preaerating the leach slurry with air or oxygen (i.e. preaeration process).If gold is refractory due to its occlusion in sulphides, silicates, tellurides, etc. then gold liberation is possible by roasting in the presence of oxygen or by leaching under oxygen pressure. The data in the recent literature indicate that reactive oxygen supplied by H202, Na202, Ca02 or 03 during cyanidation can accelerate considerably gold oxidation-cyanidation and yield high gold recovery in much shorter leach time. The information compiled in this review leads to the conclusion that oxygen plays a vital role in the dissolution of gold in cyanide lixiviant."

"IntroductionCALEY (1945) and Evans (1950) pointed out that certain instances of convergence between Devonian and Silurian horizons, frequently evident in wells drilled for oil and gas in Ontario, appear to be related to local thinning of salt beds in the Salina formation and they suggested that leaching of the salt beds may have occurred. Exploratory drilling by Imperial Oil Limited since 1945 has brought to light several examples of structures similar to those discussed by Caley and Evans. The writer has had the opportunity to examine cuttings and data from wells which penetrated these structures and the attempt to interpret them in the light of the theory of leaching and subsidence proposed by Landes ( 1945a) to explain the marked brecciation and deformation of Upper Silurian and Middle Devonian sediments which crop out in the Mackinac Straits region of northern Michigan has led to the observations presented in this paper."

Abstract The demand for pure zirconium and titanium metals in Germany increased considerably during the war. Pure zirconium was used in flash bulbs, in vacuum tubes, and in time fuses for bombs, where it has a decided advantage because it gives no gas in burning. Under the form of alloy, it was used with other rare elements for making substitutes for platinum; it was also used as a scavenging agent in high-grade steels. Metallic titanium was mainly used in connection with the manufacturing of special alloys. The authors were sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction and have investigated the German process developed for producing these rare metals. They describe the procedure and special equipment used for their commercial production in Germany during the war. General Metallic zirconium and titanium were .produced on a commercial scale in Germany by the thermal reduction, with metallic sodium, of potassium fluozirconate and titanium chloride, respectively, using a mixed potassium and sodium chloride flux. According to the information gathered, the sole German producer of these rare metals in pure form was the Deutsche Gold und Silber Scheideanstalt (commonly called Degussa), at their Werk II, 215 Gutleutstrasse, Frankfurt/Main, which was visited by the authors on September 18th, 1945. As far back as 1934, Degussa was carrying on active research on the manufacture of zirconium, and nearly one ton of the pure metal had been produced before September, 1939. Concurrently, a quite similar process was worked out for the recovery of titanium and it was in commercial operation in the year 1938, during which the production totalled about half a ton (metric). The demand, especially for pure zirconium, increased considerably during the war, attaining a total of about 48 tons during the period October, 1939, to the end of 1944, and reaching a peak of more than 15 tons in 1943. In 1944, the plant was slowed down due to the frequent and disastrous bombing by the Allies, especially in March and September.

All costs associated with operation must be controlled in an effort to improve competitive position. Electricity is a cost component that can and should be managed.Although the term management can mean different things to different people, the intent is always the same: to make the best possible use of existing resources, whether labour, equipment or electricity.The simple approach to managing electricity presented in this paper consists of four steps.I. Understand Peak Demand and Energy. It is essential to understand the terms, peak demand and energy and their effect on your electrical bill.2. Know Your Present Electrical Use. The present use of electricity in the plant must be known. This goes beyond simply knowing how much is used at each time of day, to accurately knowing how each process is contributing to the total plant electrical load, and ultimately to the electrical bill.3. Identification of Savings Opportunities. With this information, energy savings opportunities for reducing the electrical bill and improving profits can be identified.4. Implementing Improvements. Having identified areas of potential savings, improvements can then be implemented in order of their significance. This could be a matter of simply improving operations, or in some eases may mean the use of an automatic control system.These four steps can result in significant dollar savings."

When licensing technology, it is usually to the benefit of the parties, to have at least some of the technology to be licensed protected by a patent.This paper is intended to bridge the gap between the engineer in the field of mining, metallurgy and mineral processing who is interested in exploiting an invention commercially, and the patent agent or intellectual property lawyer whom he/she might retain to prepare a patent application and then prosecute the application to obtain a granted patent. It is also intended to encourage the inventor or a small business concern to consider the value of patents in the sale and licensing of technology. The lawyer may subsequently advise and assist the inventor in licensing his/her invention.A brief outline of some of the basic features of the patent system follows. The nature of the information, which the patent professional requires from the inventor to enable him/her to draft a patent application, will also be considered in general terms. Furthermore, various types of licenses which may be drawn up between a licensor of specific technical information and a licensee, will be listed and briefly discussed. No attempt, however, will be made to give a comprehensive and detailed account of the above aspects; the interested reader should consult legal publication and reference books, and patent professionals for further specific information.A granted patent is a document which describes an invention and how to practise it. The claims of the granted patent, figuratively speaking, fence off the intellectual property the inventor regards as his invention. The Commissioner of Patents, representing the Government, grants to the inventor or his assignee the exclusive right of making, constructing and using the invention, and selling it to others to be used, for a limited period of time, in exchange for disclosing the invention to the public. Thus, a patent prevents others from practising the claimed invention but it does not, necessarily, bestow the right to the patentee to practise his own invention. The term of a patent now in Canada and in most of the developed countries of the world, is 20 years from the date of filing the patent application. In the United States the patent term is still 17 years from the date of issuance of the patent. In Canada, the term was changed to 20 years in the new Canadian Patent Act which came into force on October 2, 1989. Any patent application filed prior to that date or granted before it, retains a 17 year life, commencing at the time of grant."

With the attainment of high temperatures it becomes possible to process any kind of material (particularly ceramics) in their liquid state. In the plasma spraying process, the material to be sprayed is rapidly heated until it is molten and is propelled by high velocity gases onto a surface where it adheres, to give protective coatings for a wide range of applications. The method could be considered as one of the most versatile and rapid to build up thick deposits (of plastics, metals, ceramics, cermets) and also free-standing artifacts for particular requirements without resorting to lengthy forming and sintering studies. Although plasma spraying is at the production stage in industry, advanced processes have also been developed for economically producing a wide range of new materials. This paper illustrates the benefits of the process and evaluates the challenges it represents.

"Three stages, each characterized by a particular sedimentation, magmatism, mineralization and deformation, are recognized in the geological history of Gaspe. The first stage led to the formation of the Taconian orogen, the second to that of the Acadian orogen and the third stage to the accumulation of a post-orogenic cover. The Taconian orogen includes volcanic and detrital rocks of Late Precambrian or Cambrian and Lower to Middle Ordovician ages in which ultrabasic intrusions have been emplaced. Folding is severe. Mineralization is of the Cr-Ni-Cu type, related to the igneous facies.The rocks constituting the Acadian orogen include two distinctive sequences corresponding to two successive sub-stages. The second substage began in Early Devonian time with the first pulses of the Acadian orogeny. The rocks of the first substage grade southward from a nearly platformal sequence to an assemblage implying less stability and spotty volcanism. The second substage was one of synorogenic deposition of elastic rocks, first in a marine environment and later under terrestrial conditions. Granitic intrusions, surrounded by aureoles of skarn and hornfels in which Cu-Pb-Zn mineralization is found, accompanied the Acadian deformation. The second-stage"

"THE Royalite-Canada Southern Coleville No. 1 gas strike of August 15th, 1951, and the closely following low gravity black-oil strike of August 23rd, were the first of a series of recent oil and gas discoveries in western Saskatchewan. They are in what is now known as the Coleville field, 25 miles north and west of Kindersley and 30 miles east of the Alberta-Saskatchewan border (Figure 1).Gas flows have been recorded in the Viking sand at daily rates of between 5 and 10 million cubic feet, and black oil of 15° A.P.I. gravity is produced from Mississippian sediments of Banff age at a daily rate .of 50 to 100 barrels on pump.Development drilling was carried on during the winter months, with very little attempt at step-out exploratory ventures. This year, however, a step-out programme to the northeast (Figure 2) is •being carried on in order to determine the position of a possible truncation of Mississippian sediments in that direction. Section 30 of the Coleville area has been fully developed on a 20-acre wellsite basis, and structural information is restricted to local rather than regional interpretation. No attempt will be made in this paper to interpret the Coleville area with respect to the regional geology in any but a general manner."

"During the early part of the 1980s, four new surface coal mines commenced operation in the Province of British Columbia. Each represented a major investment in both persons and materials in order to protect this investment in one significant area-the fixed portion of the surface coal handling system-a substantial amount of work was undertaken to ensure that the system was well protected from an outbreak of fire. A great deal of effort in this field had already been made by those coal mines which had been in operation for a number of years and experience gained at these operations was utilized in determining the level and extent of fire protection for the new mines.This paper summarizes the major problems, and suggests some of the methods of solution, in providing an adequate degree of fire protection for surface coal handling systems. It will also discuss the potential for gas and dust explosions together with ways to minimize this potential.The Fixed Coal Handling SystemNote: The word ""fixed"" has been used in its present context to denote that part of the coal handling system where the coal is moved via fixed installations such as a conveyor. It differentiates from that part of the system where coal is moved by mobile equipment.The raw coal delivered to the truck dump will undergo two major processes on its way to the rail load out. The first will be at the coal preparation plant where coal of specified quality will be extracted from the raw feed to the plant. If this coal is of metallurgical quality, and sometimes if it is of thermal quality, it will pass through a thermal dryer where part of the moisture acquired during coal preparation will be removed, i.e. the second process. As the complexity of both the coal preparation plant and the thermal dryer is such as to warrant separate considerations they will not form part of this paper. Each of the processes, however, is generally, housed in its own building, thus, containment of any hazards is usually more attainable than those existing or caused in the rest of the system."
