The hardening behaviour and microstructure evolution of Cu-30Ni-30Mn alloys aged at 350 °C has been investigated utilizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy and Vickers hardness tester. The results show that the discontinuous precipitation of NiMn phase results in a remarkably hardening effect in Cu-30Ni-30Mn alloy during aging at 350 °C. The maximum hardness (~494HV) is attained in the sample after aged for 48 h. The NiMn precipitates are ordered and have a face-centered tetragonal structure. The coherent orientation relationship between the NiMn precipitates and Cu matrix is (220)Matrix // (220)P, [1-1-2]Matrix // [1-1-2]P. In addition, there is a linear relationship between hardness and volume fraction of the discontinuous precipitation, which indicates that the hardness increment of Cu-Ni-Mn alloys aged at 350 °C is attributed to the microstructure characteristics of discontinuous precipitation. The high strength of discontinuous precipitation colony is caused by the formation of nanoscale NiMn precipitates with a lamellar structure in discontinuous precipitation. INTRODUCTION Cu-Ni-Mn alloys are attractive candidates for oil drilling, aerospace and energy applications due to their high elasticity, high strength and excellent corrosion resistance (Sun et al., 2009; Liu, Yang, Xia, Jiang, & Gui, 2016). The high strength of the Cu-Ni-Mn alloys is mainly attributed to the precipitation of NiMn phase (Shapiro, Tyler, & Lanam, 1974; Xie et al., 2015). The uniformly dispersed nanoprecipitates formed by continuous precipitation can impede dislocation movement, and thereby lead to a significant improvement in strength of traditional precipitation-strengthened alloys. However, it is reported that there are two precipitation types observed in Cu-Ni-Mn alloys, namely, continuous precipitation and discontinuous precipitation (Shapiro et al., 1974). The discontinuous cellular colony with a lamellar structure nucleates at grain boundaries, and progressively grows inward the grain on the process of discontinuous precipitation (Ng, Bettles, & Muddle, 2011). It is found that the discontinuous precipitation can occur in many Cu-based alloys, such as Cu-Ni- Mn alloy (Shapiro et al., 1974), Cu-Be alloy (Monzen, Hasegawa, & Watanabe, 2010) and Cu-Ni-Sn alloy (Zhao, & Notis, 1998). Many studies consider that the discontinuous precipitation results in a detrimental effect on hardness and strength, and the discontinuous precipitation occurring during aging treatment should be suppressed (Markandeya, Nagarjuna, & Sarma, 2004; Semboshi, Sato, Iwase, & Takasugi, 2016). The mechanical properties can also be improved by discontinuous precipitation in AZ91 magnesium alloy (Tamura, Kida, Suzuki, & Soda, 2009) and AM30 magnesium alloy (Saikawa et al., 2012). Jun (2017) found that the reduced interlamellar spacing of precipitate fibers in discontinuous cellular colony leads to a significant increase in hardness. Indeed, the strengthening contribution of discontinuous precipitation is similar to that of continuous precipitation in Cu-20Ni-20Mn alloy. Discontinuous precipitation of NiMn phase can provide a significant strengthening effect in Cu-Ni-Mn alloys.

"Titanium powder is produced from a small fraction of sieved sponge, HDH of sponge or gas blown from a melt produced billet. Ore from foreign sources is chlorinated in a very high temperature fluid bed to make TiCl4, then vacuum distilled purified and then reduced to sponge by Kroll processing. Domestic ores of ilmenite or perovskite can be carbothermically reduced to Ti2OC which can be chlorinated at low temperatures of 250–400°C to produce TiCl4 which can be electrolyzed in a fused salt to Ti powder, or the Ti2OC used as an anode in electrolysis to produce Ti powder. The electrolysis process can be operated continuously to produce Ti powder at a lower cost than Kroll processed sponge including produce control size powder. Electrolysis processing was scaled up and operated at the commercial demonstration stage on a continued basis that verifies the potential of a low cost process to produce Ti powder.INTRODUCTIONTitanium and alloys of titanium powder have been elevated to strategic status resulting from a focus of producing meltless titanium components as well as a feed for additive manufacturing processing. However, the high cost of titanium powder has limited wide scale implementation of using titanium powder as a feed to any process to produce titanium components. Titanium powder free of alloying is available as sponge fines from the Kroll process as illustrated in Figure 1. Titanium alloy powder is much more expensive, also illustrated in Figure 1 produced from an alloy ingot or mil product as the feed and then transformed into powder by one of several melt form processes which accounts for the high cost of titanium alloy powder at approximately $60–150/lb. Ton lots of titanium alloy powder (i.e. Ti-6Al-4V) from one source is quoted at $120/lb. in the U.S. It appears that alloy powder production cost by current processing is not sensitive to volume."

The rock mass classification system, BQ (basic quality), is the only national system that is suitable to most kinds of rock engineering in China. It uses two main aspects of the rock mass, the intact uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and the rock intactness index (KV), to obtain the rock mass BQ. The index KV could be measured by the acoustic wave method. However, because this method is an indirect approach to characterize the rock mass structure, misfits often occur between the test results and the actual rock mass characteristics. Therefore, a new parameter KGSI expressed by the geological strength index is proposed to replace the original KV, and a new method is presented to express the value of BQ as a function of the UCS and the KGSI. Then, the underground excavations at five hydropower stations were chosen as examples to study the relationship between the revised BQ and the each of the international systems (RMR, Q or RMi). In addition, the applicability of the RMR, Q, or RMi system is discussed for China?s rock characteristics and geological conditions, and suggestions are given for improving the revised BQ system.

DR. W. F. GRAY (Contributed discussion, presented at meeting by Mr. S. C. Mifilen): Mr. Rowe's suggestion that the Institute should organize itself to interpret the needs of the mining industry to federal and provincial mines departments should commend itself to our membership as sensible and practical, and as one which these public administrative bodies may welcome. One has to start with the premise that those who head the departments of mines in question have the welfare of the industry at heart. Also, it must be postulated that the technical viewpoint of our membership is necessarily free of political considerations. With these reservations, one ventures to state that both Mr. Rowe in his communication to the present session of the Institute, and Professor M. Y. Williams in his earlier communication to the Western Meeting, on The Geological Survey and Mining Development (1), voice the regret general among our membership at the abandonment of the honoured name, and to some extent of the status, of the Geological Survey of Canada. The writer, in 1932, devoted his Presidential Address to the Institute to an appreciation of the value to Canadian mining of the Geological Survey of Canada (2), affirming the desire of the Institute "that the work of the Survey shall be maintained at the highest pitch of efficiency the resources of our country will permit, because, to scrimp expenses on the Survey, is 'to save at the spigot and lose at the bunghole'." He believes that is still the opinion of the Institute, and, if contraction of the usefulness of the Survey is feared by our members at this time, it is incumbent upon the Institute, in fairness to those who direct our government, to say so in precise and explicit terms. Mr. Rowe puts the situation pithily when he writes: "We have reached a stage in our development where a stock-taking and co-ordination of existing knowledge and data is essential. This is a part of that basic function of Dominion mineral technical services which is national and not provincial in its scope".

"Enclosed gear cases on board heavy mining equipment have traditionally been lubricated with regular heavy duty gear oils. However, equipment manufacturers, have recommended the use of an ISO-1000 gear oil for this application to ensure adequate lubricant film strength, especially at the higher end of the working temperature range. The majority of these ISO-1000 gear oils are based either on residual/asphaltic oil or synthetics, primarily higher viscosity polyalphaolefins. Although the performance of these lubricants has been satisfactory, they suffered other shortcomings that equipment users have lived with over the years.The major requirement at the user’s mine was to provide lubrication for the shovel Hoist gear case. Within such a gear case design, the gears and the roller bearings, that have different lubrication requirements, are lubricated with the same lubricant. Several lubricants were used, light gear oils as well as the recommended ISO-1000 heavy gear oils. On the one hand, the lighter oils performed adequately for the lubrication of the bearings that formed part of the enclosed gear system. These lighter oils did not perform as well for the lubrication of the gears due to their lower viscosities, resulting in shorter gear servicelives.On the other hand, the ISO-1000 gear oils performed well for the lubrication of the gears, but were too viscous to creep into the bearing elements to lubricate them adequately, especially during the cold northern Canadian winters. This resulted in catastrophic bearing failures and secondary damages to the gears.The challenge, then, was to formulate a lubricant which met the 1000 cSt at 40°C viscosity requirement as stipulated by the equipment manufacturer, while satisfactorily lubricating the bearings at the full working temperature range. This was achieved by the development of a semi-fluid grease lubricant, which has proven in field trials to give adequate performance in this application for the lubrication of both the bearings and gears down to -40°C.This product met the equipment manufacturer’s performance criteria and resolved, to a large extent, leakage of the lubricant through seals experienced with the use of conventional and synthetic gear oils.Although the main performance criteria of the fluid was its capability to lubricate the “Hoist” gear case, it was also used during the field trial in other gear cases on board the shovel to test its full capabilities.This unusual alternative lubricant was field tested and evaluated for more than two years. Based on this assessment, the product was reformulated to improve its fluidity, slumpability and the settling of debris/wear metals to the bottom of the gear cases. This reformulated softer grade, a semi-fluid grease, has been performing satisfactorily for more than eight months and is still undergoing longer term assessment."

"This paper presents a study developed to assess the potential use of salt tailings as backfill to control surface subsidence and as a mine bulkhead used to isolate areas of potential brine inflows. A series of index tests, centrifuge model tests and quasi-static creep consolidation tests were performed to evaluate the creep and consolidation properties of salt backfl1l and to evaluate the effect of brine inflow and brine infiltration on backfill behaviour. The centrifuge models were specifically designed to study the mechanical behaviour of salt backfill under the influence of brine inflow and long-term creep. Test results indicated that salt tailings could be applied underground as a bulkhead to seal off areas of potential inflow with the additional advantage of controlling room closure and local back instability. It is hoped that this study will assist mine planners to develop contingency plans to control brine inflow occurrences. IntroductionThe use of salt tailings as backfill is a technique that would assist in the control of potential brine inflows and surface subsidence, and would have a very positive impact on the long term adverse environmental effects associated with surface salt tailings disposal. A centrifuge testing program was designed to evaluate the behaviour of salt tailings as backfill; the effectiveness of salt backfill as a bulkhead used to isolate areas of potential brine inflow and the potential use of salt backfill to control surface subsidence. The testing program was also used to evaluate the creep-consolidation properties of salt backfill and to evaluate the effect of brine inflow and brine infiltration on backfill behaviour. This paper presents the results of the experimental centrifuge testing program and a comparison of results with models tested under I g using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled loading frame (MTS) and a creep consolidation cell. Applicability of the results to practical underground soft rock mining is also discussed.The centrifuge model tests indicated that salt tailings could be applied underground as bulkheads to seal off areas of potential inflow with the additional advantage of controlling room closure and local back instability. Because the applied stresses (1.2 MPa) and fill consolidation were relatively low, the centrifuge simulated bulkhead did not retain all of the inflow brine. At typical field stresses it is expected that the fill would be able to seal off panels with brine inflows. Further testing at higher stresses are suggested to determine the consolidation and stress levels at which the fill would completely retain any potential brine inflow head and positively act as mine bulkhead."

"The effects of commercial copper electrorefining additives (glue and thiourea) on the electrochemical removal of bismuth are of importance in copper production. It was found that Bi(III) electrodeposition occurs readily from acidic sulfate solution via a diffusion-controlled quasi-reversible reduction. The diffusion coefficient of Bi(III) was measured and found to be less than reported values of copper in similar solutions. The presence of thiourea and/or glue was found to accelerate or de-polarize Bi(III) reduction on stainless steel as compared to the inhibition or polarization of Cu(II) reduction. The additives also inhibited the dissolution of the Bi-Cu co-deposit during cyclic voltammetry. During short term deposition studies, the additives increased the concentration of Bi in co-deposited Cu-Bi products from solutions with low concentrations of Cu (<2 g/L). Bi deposition was significantly suppressed by increasing the Cu(II) concentration in the solution. The formation of a copper layer on the stainless steel electrode appeared to significantly suppress the reduction of Bi(III). This study demonstrates that glue and thiourea depolarize the deposition of bismuth on stainless steel. Therefore, the additives could be used to improve Bi impurity removal during third stage liberation.INTRODUCTIONThe production of high purity copper has been steadily increasing due to the wide application of the metal and its alloys in electrical and electronic products, infrastructure construction, industrial machinery and equipment, general products and transportation (Moskalyk et al., 2003). Most high purity copper is manufactured from copper sulfide mineral concentrates and/or scrap via a pyrometallurgical process followed by electrorefining (Navarro et al., 1999). During the electrorefining process, cast anodes of 99-99.5% purity are electrochemically dissolved into an acidified copper sulfate solution while high purity copper (>99.99%) is plated on stainless steel blanks or copper starter sheets (Davenport et al., 2002). The control of cathode deposit growth (purity and morphology) while maintaining a high current efficiency is of significant importance for copper refining (Ilkhchi et al., 2007). At typically applied current densities for industrial copper electrorefining, mass and charge transfer play important roles in the quality of cathodic products (Hiskey et al., 1998). If the real current density at some surface points is substantially higher owing to uneven current distribution, then rough spots can and will grow faster leading to nodules (Suarez et al., 1992). Nodulated deposits tend to capture solution and anode impurities (slimes) resulting in unacceptable cathode quality (Afifi et al., 1987). Furthermore, these nodules can grow until they eventually contact the anode leading to short circuits and current efficiency reduction (Ilkhchi et al. 2007)."

The Norddeutsche Affinerie operates an Outokumpu-Flash-Furnace as a smelting unit. The pyrometallurgical slag cleaning process is based on the slag reduction and settling in the electric furnace. Since 1972 when the slag cleaning furnace was built the throughput could be increased fourfold. However, an extensive optimisation effort is required in order to keep the copper loss low. A parameter study with a neuronal network model based on real process data was conducted to identify parameters impacting on the copper loss in the slag. It could be demonstrated that the main parameters responsible for copper loss in the final slag are fixed parameters of the flash furnace. For a better understanding of the copper loss in the electric furnace microscopic analyses of the slag structure and viscosity measurements were performed. Based on these results the reduction and settling of the copper containing droplets could be increased in both pilot plant studies and industrial scale. 4

Large differences between macro and micro grindability relationships have been discovered for mill design measurements using the patented SAGDesign(TM) test. Crushing, Rod and Ball Mill Wi tests, and breakage parameter measurements have previously been used to design SAG mills but have not revealed the true magnitude of these differences. A SAGDesign(TM) test measures the SAG/Bond Wi Ratio (defined below) for every sample tested and gives a good design result because the F80 of the SAG stage test feed is 19 mm and because the test includes a Bond Ball Mill Work Index on SAG ground ore. Good flotation operation demands properly sized grinding mills and steady feed to the flotation circuit.

"In kraft pulp mills, the spent pulping liquor is concentrated and used as fuel in the recovery boiler. Extensive deposits are formed in the upper section of the boiler due to the very high ash content of the fuel and the volatite nature of the ash. Deposits are composed of Na2S04, Na2C03 NaCI, some potassium salts and reduced sulphur compounds. Chloride and potassium salts are enriched in the deposits compared to the smelt due to their greater volatility.Severe corrosion of the superheater tubes in a recovery boiler has been traced to three factors: a non-uniform temperature profile in the flue gas, relatively high operating steam temperatures and high chIoride and potassium concentrations in the fireside deposits.The role of chIoride and potassium in superheater corrosion has been explained by increased Iiquid phase in deposits. Together with corrosion studies, this information has shown that kraft recovery boiler superheater corrosion due to the chloride and potassium enriched deposits can be avoided by proper boiler operation and by judicious superheater and furnace design.IntroductionThis investigation of recovery boiler superheater corrosion was initiated by the discovery of severe corrosion of the final stage superheater in a Canadian closed cycle kraft pulp mill(1,2). Metal wastage leading to tube failure was believed to be due to three major causes : the relatively high operating steam temperatures, the uneven distribution of flue gas temperature across the boiler which created a "" hot spot"" and the high chloride and potassium concentrations in the superheater fire side deposit. The mill responded to the problem by i) lowering the superheater steam temperature from 475°C to 380°C, ii) minimizing the chloride content in the spent pulping liquor, by controlling the NaCI input with recovered bleach plant effluent, and iii) changing metallurgy of a portion of the bottom section of the final stage superheater platens from ferritic steel T-22 (2.25% Cr, 1% Mo) to austenitic steel Incoloy 800H (21% Cr, 32% Ni, 46% Fe, 1.5% Mn, 1% Si, 0.6% Al) (Fig. 1). Details of the superheater corrosion experienced in the closed cycle mil! have been reported in previous papers(l ·2,) ."

"The Giant claims are on the west side of Yellowknife bay about 1 ½ miles north of the settlement of Yellowknife. They were staked in 1935 by prospectors in the employ of Burwash Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, and were transferred to Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1937, on the incorporation of that Company. During the period 1936 to 1940 a number of surface discoveries were investigated by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling. A shallow inclined shaft was sunk on the Brock zone, a system of narrow and irregular quartz veins, and some 75 tons of high-grade ore was mined and shipped to the Trail smelter. In 1943 management control was acquired by Frobisher Exploration Company, Limited. An intensive campaign of diamond drilling was commenced in January 1944 and carried on continuously for 2 years. This drilling indicated the presence of substantial gold orebodies lying within well-developed shear zones. Two shafts, 1 ¼ miles apart, were sunk during 1946 and underground development started on two of the orebodies.The claims are underlain largely by rocks of the Yellowknife greenstone belt, which extends from the shore of Great Slave lake along the west side of Yell ow knife bay and northward . The most conspicuous structural features are the steeply dipping late faults. The chief of these is the West Bay, which bisects the greenstone belt at an acute angle and crosses the southern part of the Giant group. At the 'big bend' near the west boundary of the claims there is a remarkably sudden change in the strike of the fault, from about 12° N.W. to about 3° N.E. The apparent horizontal displacement along this fault is of the order of 3 miles, with the east side moved relatively north. There are also a large number of lesser faults with apparent horizontal displacements of a few feet up to l,70J feet for the Townsite fault. Most of these faults trend north to northwest. Surface examination indicates that, at least for most of them, the movement corresponds to that along the West Bay fault, that is, the east side moved relatively north. According to the available evidence, all or most•of the movem:nt along the West Bay fault and along the lesser faults was post-ore. Late diabase dyk:s that cut through ore-bearing shear zones, with chilled margins in contact with the mineralized material, are apparently displaced to the same extent as earlier geological markers. In this paper large deformation of smart functionally graded beams with initial imperfection and under thermal loadings is considered. Smart beam consist of two types of layers. One layer is made from functionally graded materials and a layer or a set of layers from active materials that usually is made from piezoelectric materials that are bounded on the surfaces of beam. An active controller is used for controlling the deformation and stress in functionally graded layer of beam. A simple Euler- Bernoulli beam theory is used for analyzing of beam. In functionally graded layer the material property vary continuously through the thickness direction and power law model is used for the variation of elastic modulus, heat expansion and heat conduction coefficients. Poisson ratio is assumed to be constant in functionally graded layer. The effects of varying the power law constants and the Gain of controller is considered here. The results are reduced and compared with smart functionally graded beam without initial imperfections.

"One kind of tailings from gravity separation of polymetallic mine contains 0.5–0.8% SnO2. The proportion of –0.037 mm size fraction of the tailings is 37.12%, and the distribution rate of SnO2 is 60.32% in it. For this tailings, two processing technology was carried out. One was felt-shaking table gravity separation in which the concentrate with a grade of 30% SnO2 at a recovery of 10% was obtained. Another was flotation-gravity separation in which the concentrate with a grade of 51.20% SnO2 at a recovery of 51.69% was obtained, but the dosage of collectors was as much as 990g/t. Therefore, the experimental research on the influence of grain size composition on the cassiterite recovery were conducted. The results show that: (1) the flotation recovery of the cassiterite distributed in +0.043 mm size fraction is only 10%, flotation recovery is not suitable for it; (2) a portion of cassiterite distributed in –0.01+0.005 mm size fraction could be recovered by flotation, but the tin flotation performance will be worsened rapidly and the dosage of collectors will be increased due to the increase of the content of –0.010 mm size fraction; (3) flotation processing is not suitable for –0.005 mm size fraction of the tailings. According to the results, a new technology has been carried out, that is discarding tailings by gravity separation-hydrocyclone desliming-flotation-gravity separation processing flow. The processing index is close to that of the flotation-gravity separation processing flow, and the collector dosage is decreased to 360 g/t by this processing technology. And, it has been achieved that the cassiterite slime is recovered economically and reasonably.INTRODUCTIONAs the density of cassiterite is higher than that of gangue, gravity separation is considered to be a low cost, pollution free, and effective process for cassiterite recovery (Wills, 2009). However, cassiterite is a kind of fragile mineral, over crushing is easy to take place and a large amount of slime is inevitably produced in the crushing and grinding of cassiterite. For the cassiterite slime exists in –0.043 mm size fraction, the efficiency of gravity separation decreases sharply. The production practice shows that, for the fine cassiterite, the recovery of tin exists in –0.043 mm +0.010 mm size fraction is about 13% through shaking table gravity separation, and the tin exists in –0.010 mm size fraction is almost impossible to be recovered by gravity separation. If flotation is adopted to recover fine cassiterite, the problems of high reagent dosage, high cost, environmental pollution, and poor economic benefit would take place. Therefore, the recovery of cassiterite slime is a worldwide problem. A key way to increase the utilization of tin resource and increase the economic benefit of tin mines is developing suitable beneficiation process for fine cassiterite."

"The fourth concentrate production plant includes the comminution systems and the medium-low intensity magnetic separators (LIMS). Based on different conditions, two types of materials are fed into the plant. Type A: 70% of mine ore and 30% of reject materials from magnetite plant and type B: 100% of mine ore. The goal of the present study was to increase the iron grade and the blain number with low sulfur content in final concentrate as the pellet feed. An appropriate pellet feed should have more than 67% of iron, less than 0.1% of sulfur and a Blain number of more than 1800 cm2/g. The Fe, S and Blain no. amounts for the present concentrate are 66.6%, 0.95%, and 500 cm2/g (feed type:A) and 67.8%, 2.3%, and 450 cm2/g (feed type: B), respectively. In this research, the plant improvement efficiency was evaluated by changing the feed particle size distribution and using the flotation system. Laboratory experiments were designed based on the three circuits:1) LIMS (Low Intensity Grinding Rolls) feed grinding-LIMS test-flotation test2) LIMS feed grinding-flotation test-LIMS test3) LIMS concentrate grinding-flotation testThe best results were obtained using the first circuit at the LIMS feed size (d80) of 132 ?m. The processing results using the circuit no. 1 (feed type: A), showed a LIMS concentrate with 69.8% of Fe and 0.36% of sulfur. In this case, the final concentrate (after flotation) with Fe grade of 70.3%, sulfur content of 0.07% and Blain no. of 1571 cm2/g were obtained. In case of the feed type of B, the LIMS concentrate with Fe grade of 68.7%, and sulfur grade of 1.6% was achieved. Also, the Fe and sulfur contents were 69.3%, and 0.4% respectively with a Blain number of 1112 cm2/g. According to the obtained results, it was suggested that a LIMS feed comminution along with a LIMS and flotation systems are necessary to achieve an appropriate iron and sulfur grades with an acceptable blain number. To reach a concentrate Blain number as a pelletizing feed, a High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) system at the end of the processing line was recommended."

"IntroductionBy the 1980s, the continuous casting process had almost replaced the ingot casting of steel in Japan, Europe and North America. While economic benefits were probably initially the prime motivator, the transition rapidly proved that continuous casting in conjunction with ladle metallurgy offered a much greater degree of process control and made possible routine steel specifications not previously available.This new technology demanded improved procedures for the quantitative addition of the required metallurgical reagents, especially as regards the more volatile or toxic elements such as calcium , boron, carbon, sulphur, lead and tellurium. The injection of a thin steel tube containing the additive into the metal bath of a ladle refining station offers the best procedure for this. In the industry this has been referred to as ""Cored Wire "".Operators using this technology find that they are faced with balancing the injection speed against the small cross section of the tube to feed the required amount of reagent within the short time span available to the operation. Large-ladle shops requiring major quantities usually resort to multiple machines and high speeds. Many machines approach a maximum feed rate of 400 m/min. Higher speeds exceed the melting rate of the system, and the ferro static buoyancy of the tube will cause it to coil up the ladle wall and possibly resurface into the slag layer, and even eject itself above the surface. Under these conditions, exact control of element recovery becomes difficult, especially with the commonest addition, calcium silicon alloy.Many experts are persuaded that the final melting position of the carrier tube has major importance in establishing consistent element yield to the bath.For instance, the vapour pressure of calcium at l500 °C is close to I bar. Reaching a melting depth sufficient to accommodate this value is considered to be critical to achieving an acceptable and reproducible yield.Many studies have elaborated semi-empirical formulae to establish the melt zone depth, connecting this value essentially to the diameter of the tube , the injection rate and the superheat of the steel. The author&apos;s experience in steelmaking could not confirm such formulae in many cases, and he set about to develop a mathematical model which would be useful in addressing this problem, taking into account the several parameters which will regulate the behaviour of a filled tube immersed in molten steel."

Welding is highly reliable and efficient metal joining process. In welding the metal adjacent to the weld joint is subjected to severe thermal conditions. As a result, complex changes in metallurgical structure occur in this region. These changes in structure depend on the material and the temperature history experienced. Friction stir welding (FSW) is relatively a new welding process in which, heat is generated by friction between the tool and the workpiece. The amount of heat conducted into the workpiece determines the quality of weld, residual stress and distortion of the workpiece. The objective of the current work is to study the transient temperature in a friction stir welding. So, a three dimensional transient analytical model is used to study the thermal distribution during the welding. Heat input from the tool shoulder alone is considered in the model. The process parameters like axial load, welding speed and tool rotational speed, used in actual FSW process are taken to build the model. This analytical model is very useful for select the optimized affected parameters in friction stir welding. The model illustrates the comprehensive equation including actual affected parameters in FSW and it can be used for different materials. In addition to the above the thermal history finds application in design of welding tools.

"Since the most of mineral processing are wet, and for more specific applications where it is necessary to increase the purity through leaching and / or concentration, the proper dispersion is the first, and perhaps more crucial stage in the whole chain of processing. This specific process is based on the formation of a dispersion or suspension of mineral, trying to make the mixture as homogeneous as possible, and with specific rheological conditions. Sometimes it is not enough agitation to make it happen, so that chemical additives are used as an aid. However, the addition of chemicals strongly alters the viscosity and other rheological properties of the suspension factor to consider for subsequent steps to ore beneficiation. In other hand, in a process where no chemicals used often employ large quantities of water to achieve dispersion. But if an efficient chemical agent, which optimizes said dispersion through a specific physicochemical effect on the particle surface is used, also it can generate rheological advantages, besides achieving rational use of water and increase the recoveries of the product main about also optimal costs. The aim of this work is to find the optimal rheological conditions for a dispersion of kaolin as study case, looking for stability, best disaggregation, viscosity and pseudoplasticity.To find the optimal additive, the evaluation parameters were: 1) Best degree of dispersion of the suspensions according to the analysis of the flow curve; 2) Best level of disaggregation of particle chemical analysis delaminated by Particle Size Distribution; and 3) Best thixotropic rheological parameters and pseudoplasticity. Finally the optimum additive as one that meets the best combination of parameters is proposed.INTRODUCTIONKaolin is a clay material formed by altering of feldspar composed mainly for kaolinite. Depending on the application, the kaolin as raw material must be refined and processed because the ores of clays contain usually a lot of impurities derived of its sedimentary source, such as feldspar, mica and quartz (Torres, et. al., 2011). According to the experience on the plant floor and the publication of several scientific papers, it is known that the dispersion is a crucial stage in mineral processing (Greene, Duke, & Hunter, 1965) (Raghavan, et. al., 2004), not only because of the disaggregation of particles, besides because of the humectation of them. Is clear that disaggregation of particles give to the suspensions rheological stability, and the humectation improves the effect of further processes like grinding or chemical treatment. The dispersion process involves making a suspension of the mineral with a solvent which is usually water, to obtain a homogeneous dispersion, with the aid of energy of stirring. Sometimes is not enough the agitation (even with high energy) for this to occur, so is necessary the use of dispersing substances which introduce ions and molecules as modifiers of chemical potential, forcing the molecules of the material to disperse. Sometimes their use even could affect the pH of the suspension in a non-desirable condition. (Flores, 2013)."

In. East Kootenay, two Companies are operating, the Crow&apos;s Nest Pass Coal Company of Fernie, with mines at Coal Creek and Michel, and the Corbin Coal and Coke Company, of Corbin and Spokane. Wash., with mines at Corbin. The Crow&apos;s Nest Pass Coal Company has also coke-ovens of the bee-hive type at Fernie and Michel. The mines have a productive capacity, with present development and plant, of approximately 1,500,000 tons of coal, and of 300,000 tons of coke annually. The total production in 1923 was 828, 990 tons of coal and 65.990 tons of coke. In the early years of operation, the mines furnished a very large percentage of their output to the railways and smelters. These were, in fact, the primary markets for which the mines were opened and the ovens constructed. The Great Northern Railway had built into Femie, and later extending its line to Michel, became a heavy consumer of both of these mines. The Spokane International, connecting the Crow&apos;s Nest branch of the C.P .R. with Spokane, furnished tonnage to Corbin. The Canadian Pacific Railway bought for Crow&apos;s Nest consumption. The smelters at Grand Forks and Trail in the Boundary country were large and steady consumers of coke, while in-termittently Northport, Butte, Helena, and Great Falls shared in the product of the ovens.

It then goes on to outline the role that atomic power -with its basic raw material, uranium -will play in supplying these energy requirements. Canada&apos;s position in this picture is covered, and some interesting forecasts are made. Introduction I T is possible that the following remarks will appear to have more to do with power than uranium. However, to fully comprehend what is in store for the Canadian uranium mining industry, we must be able to estimate the potential requirement, and, to do this satisfactorily, a thorough understanding of the circumstances that will give rise to that demand is necessary. The growing need for electrical energy will play by far the major role, as large tonnages of uranium will be required for its generation. The nuclear weapon has, up to the present, comprised the major market for uranium.

In this paper, Stress-Strain-Temperature relations for Shape Memory Alloys are studied. Temperature effects on Shape Memory Alloys are different from those related to ordinary materials. In ordinary materials, elastic characteristics can be assumed to be constant in low temperature ranges, and only the deflection arising from temperature changes could be added to the elastic defection. As long as two phases of austenite and martensite could be present in Shape Memory Alloys simultaneously, elastic modulus follows temperature and temperature gradient. In continue a smart actuator is investigated considering a homogeneous cantilever beam. Beam bending is established by using shape memory wires. An initial strain is imposed to shape memory wires in a low temperature, and then, they are installed in the outer surface of the beam. Therefore, since the temperature is imposed in these wires and they cannot have free recovery strain, the compressive recovery stress will be produced in the outer surface. This will result in a deflection in axial direction of the beam. At first, beam deflection is calculated on the basis of theoretical relations and solving the relevant differential equations. Afterwards, experimental tests are performed on an elastomeric beam equipped with shape memory wires. When a voltage is applied, a temperature rise will occur in the wires; then, this temperature rise causes a deflection in the beam. Finally, the theoretical and experimental results? comparison indicates a good conformity. One capability of this actuator is its high flexibility, and by controlling the inlet current, the end-beam deflection can be controlled.
