Operating CIP/CIL gold recovery plants in the arid regions of Western Australia face unique challenges due to water and ore quality issues. The presence of cations of Mg, Fe and Cu metals in water supplies and leached sulphide ores can have considerable effect on plant consumption of lime and cyanide, due to pH buffering and complexation effects. Reagent costs are critical to many of these operations. In this paper, computational modelling is used to analyse a number of process options to mitigate such issues. This requires careful consideration of the chemistry of the process system, and the ability to predict accurately the response of speciation and precipitation reactions to changing process conditions. The Mg-Fe-Cu-CN-H20 system is specifically modelled in this application. The Gibbs Free Energy Minimisation thermodynamic framework has been selected to model equilibrium phenomena. Furthermore, this approach has been extended to the process flowsheet level, incorporating multiple unit operations and recycle streams in a steady-state mass balance model. The Gibbs equilibrium composition module of HSC Chemistry software has been successfully integrated into the commercial flowsheeting package SysCAD. Consideration of the Gibbs Energy Minimisation capabilities of other flowsheeting packages has also been given. This approach has been successful in simulating the aqueous process chemistry typical of such plants. It has resulted in a predictive capability where equilibrium states respond appropriately to process changes. Potential cost savings may be identified by examining alternative process conditions to minimise overall reagent consumption.This methodology may be extended to other hydrometallurgical plants where issues of solution ideality, temperature and other equilibrium processes are sufficiently understood.

"The treatment of an oxidized copper-gold ore by stage cyanide addition was investigated. For cyanidation, free cyanide ion concentration can be an indicator of whether there is copper dissolved in cyanide solution, and maintaining the free cyanide ion concentration lower than 1.0 g/L could be an effective way to prevent copper dissolution and reduce cyanide consumption. For that purpose, stage cyanide addition was introduced to control free cyanide ion concentration within the range from 0.8 to 1.0 g/L. Cyanidation tests results indicate that gold extraction was still acceptable at reduced cyanide consumption with a lower copper extraction. Based on the experimental study, industry application works at Beiya concentrator of Yunnan province, China were successfully conducted. When the raw ore contains 2.95 ppm Au and 0.75% Cu, by stage cyanide addition method, the gold extraction was still 93% at reduced cyanide consumption of 2135 g/t, which was only half of one addition method, and the copper extraction dropped to only 5%, which indicated that dissolution was prevented for almost 75% of the malachites.INTRODUCTIONCyanide with its competency to form a strong complex with gold, is the most preferable lixiviant for gold leaching. However, cyanidation is not inherently a selective process since many other minerals present in the ore are also readily soluble, especially the copper minerals. Muir (2011) reported that every 1% reactive copper present in the ore consumes about 30 kg/t NaCN, which can have detrimental effects on the process efficiency and economics due to high cyanide consumption, reduced gold leach rates and poor gold recovery."

The heat pipe is a self-contained, passive structure that uses a liquid-vapour fluid cycle to provide high thermal conductance . Through the proper selection of working fluids and container materials, heat pipes have been operated at temperatures ranging from less than -300°F to more than 3,000 °F. The passive nature, high efficiency and configuration flexibility of the heat pipe are presented. The application of McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company Cryo-Anchor® heat pipes for foundation and support stabilization in permafrost regions is discussed. Using the proven Cryo-Anchor technology base. a proposed application of heat pipes in a cold -region mine ventilation system heat recovery heat exchanger is presented. Information obtained from the development of an air-cooled heat pipe steam condenser provides the technical basis for large -scale heat pipe applications.

"1880s - Unmasking the Sudbury Basin Falconbridge Ltd. turned 60 in 1988 but its roots go back more than a century to the discovery and development of the mineral resources of the Sudbury Basin. Nickel was first identified in the area in 1856 but sustained exploration awaited the early 1880s and the advance of the CPR westward from Sudbury. Rock was laid bare in the right-of-way and by forest fires and logging. Reddish oxidized outcropping or ""gossan"" were exposed, heralding the presence of nickel as the shape of this astounding geological formation gradually began to emerge. Many great mines of the area were opened up in this period on the south rim of the Basin west of Sudbury. To the east the ore dips below overburden, however, and Falconbridge remained a mere dot on the map until the turn of the century when Thomas Edison detected a magnetic occurrence by dip needle."

During the past decade, the miner-al industries have been faced with an increasing shortage of engineers. The point has now been reached where the shortage may be termed critical. This shortage may be attributed directly to declining enrollment in the mineral science programs offered by the universities on this continent. Although the reasons for declining enrollment are undoubtedly many, two major hypotheses may be postulated. The first is that high-school graduates are either unaware of the mineral industries and the opportunities in them or that they are aware of them but have somehow obtained a false image of their true nature. The second is that they are aware of the true nature of these industries and the opportunities they offer but find them exceedingly unattractive. The problem of dwindling enrollments has, in recent years, been subjected to a concerted attack by the industries and professions concerned. However, their efforts to date have been based essentially on the first hypothesis. Sufficient results are now available to suggest that either the methods of attack are inappropriate

They include the Bienfait Mine, the Boundary Dam Mine, the Diplomat Mine, the Luscar Mine and the Coal Valley Mine. The company's plans/or expansion are also discussed. IntroductionLuscar Ltd. is an Edmonton-based energy company formed in 1967 through an amalgamation of two pioneer coal companies-Mountain Park Collieries and Luscar Coals Ltd. In 1912, Mountain Park Collieries initiated the development of an underground mine in the Coal Branch area of Alberta. This mine necessitated the establishment of a townsite and the provision of rail access. The second operation, Luscar Coals Ltd., was established in 1921 at Luscar, Alberta. This was also an underground operation and required the development of a rail spur and townsite. The product from both mines was used to fuel railway steam locomotives until the 1950's. The market demand for coal decreased as the use of the diesel locomotive increased, so that these operations were finally closed in 1954. Through the amalgamation of the two companies in 1967, however, Luscar Ltd. was formed to become an active participant in the revival of coal operations. Western Canadian Luscar Ltd. is involved in the exploration, development, production and marketing of coal, coal products, oil and gas. Luscar Ltd. is currently participating in five producing mines (Fig. I). The Diplomat Mine, approximately 125 miles southeast of Edmonton, was in production when it was acquired in 1949 by Luscar Coals Ltd. In 1966, the Bienfait Mine and char plant were added. The Luscar Mine, which is a 50/50 joint venture of Luscar Ltd. and the Consolidation Coal Company of Canada, and is operated by Cardinal River Coals Limited, started production in 1969 on the original Luscar Coals Ltd. mine site. The Boundary Dam Mine was opened in 1974. Both the Bienfait and Boundary Dam operations are located in the lignite coal fields of southeastern Saskatchewan. The most recent addition to the group is the Coal Valley Mine, 40 miles southwest of Edson, Alberta. It commenced commercial production in July, 1978 under the operation of Luscar Stereo (1977) Limited."

The aim of this work was to prepare the metallic coatings on 316L stainless steel dental implant and evaluate the corrosion characteristics and thus the biocompatibility of the uncoated and metallic coated dental implants and comparison of the effect of the type of coatings on biocompatibility. Three types of metallic coatings including Tantalum, Niobium, and Titanium coatings were made using physical vapor deposition process on 316L stainless steel dental implant. Structural characterization techniques including; X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis were utilized to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the coatings. Electrochemical potentiodynamic tests were performed in two types of physiological solutions at 37±1 °C in order to determine and compare the corrosion characteristics. All three types of metallic coatings had a positive effect on improvement of the corrosion behavior so that the coatings could increase the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel and this trend was independent to the type of physiological environment. Biocompatible metallic coatings could decrease the corrosion current density that is a distinct advantage for prevention of ion release. This can improve the biocompatibility of the implant and, consequently prevention of tissue damages, inflammation and irritation and obtained desirable histopathological response.

Although the Sudbury Event which formed the structure may be unique, the area has, in fact, been shaped by a series of tectonic, magmatic and mineralization events which can be considered in terms of two Wilson cycles of continental extension and closure. The first cycle, from 2500 to 1700 Ma, included the following events: doming (uplift of Levack Gneiss Complex); NE-SW extension (Matachewan dikes); N-S to NW-SE rifting (faults, mafic intrusions, sedimentation, and Ni-Cu-PGE and U mineralization); NW-SE extension (Nipissing diabase, and Ni-Cu-PGE, Ag, Co mineralization); and NW-SE and NE-SW closure (Penokean Orogeny, 1900 to 1700 Ma) with superimposed meteorite impact (1850 Ma, Ni-Cu- PGE, Zn-Cu-Pb deposits). The second cycle, from 1700 to 1000 Ma, included: N-S extension (alkali metasomatism, Au); N-S extension (hornblende diabase dikes along the Murray fault set); NNESSW extension (olivine diabase dikes); NE-SW extension (Fecunis Lake fault set); and NW-SE closure (Grenvillian Orogeny).The rich and diverse Ni-Cu-PGE and subordinate Zn-Pb-Cu and Au mineralization of the Sudbury region is related to endogenic and impact-triggered crustal extension and magmatism. The Sudbury Structure apparently was the site of a triple junction or hot-spot. The Sudbury ores, although located within an impact structure, are analogous in terms of age and tectonic setting to Ni-Cu-PGE and Zn-Pb-Cu ores elsewhere in the world. "This paper summarizes research that was done at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, to evaluate samples of phosphogypsum for gypsum products manufacture. The samples were from phosphate fertilizer facilities at: Port Maitland, Ontario ; Valleyfield, Quebec; and Fort Saskatchewan and Redwater, Alberta. All samples were wet-screened, washed, filtered and calcined in a laboratory kettle at atmospheric pressure. Tests were also made at higher pressures in a small autoclave. The gypsum and resulting hemi-hydrate, being acidic, were treated before, during and after calcining with various bases. The hemi-hydrate products were checked for time of set, compressive strength and bond to gypsum wallboard paper. The results of this study indicate that phosphogypsum from each of the sources investigated has potential as a substitute for mined gypsum in gypsum products manufacture. Pilot-scale testing is recommended to confirm that the product would be satisfactory for the manufacture of plaster products on a commercial basis."

A three-phase, continuously-operated, 250 kv.a. electric smelting furnace has been installed at the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, for the experimental treatment of ores and by-products of interest to the Canadian mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries. In the operation of this furnace particular emphasis is placed on the accumulation of quantitative data which will be useful in determining the most suitable smelting technique and the nature of the products, and in arriving at preliminary conclusions regarding the cast of power and electrodes. The results obtained in the experimental smelting of iron, manganese-iron, titanium- iron, nickel, and chromiumiron ores, and of a number of industrial by-products, clearly show the value of such treatment for materials of this type.

A STATEMENT on this subject by A. D. Turnbull, presented and discussed at the Annual Business Conference of the Metallurgy Division, C.I.M., held in Ottawa on April 22nd 1957, led to creation of a committee "too see if the Metallurgy Division of the C.I.M. can improve this situation". Without discounting the general problems of education and short-ages in other fields, the committee is primarily concerned with deficiencies related to metallurgy. The committee members are: F. R. Archibald, Chairman, A. D. Turnbull, L. E. Djingheuzian, J. U. Mac-Ewan, and L. M. Pidgeon. Following exchange of views among the committee members a general attitude of approach was established and a background of reference material assembled. It is the purpose of this review to acquaint those interested with the reference material, to offer an appraisal of the situation, and to suggest a programme for action by the Metallurgy Division of the C.I.M. Before proceeding with the ?presentation it is fitting to point out that, notwithstanding some rather important developments in public concern for educational matters, as well as changes in the level of activity in the metallurgical industry, the statement (April 1957) by Mr. Turnbull still stands as a sound article of reference.

Small pilot scale experiments have shown that it is possible to almost fully eliminate the minor elements (ME), namely As, Sb, Bi and Pb contained in smelter dusts by vacuum calcination of mixtures of the dust with sulphidizing agents such as dirty copper concentrate or elemental sulphur at 900 °C and 80 +/- 30 Pa for 90 minutes. The products of this calcination are a residue comprising a purified mixture of copper containing compounds along with the gangue constituents and a high sulphur condensate comprising a mixture of the minor element compounds. In particular, the Cu:ME ratios of the concentrate and dust were increased from 250 and 50, from 28 and 12 and from 36 and 8 to roughly 3000, 3000 and 100 for the calcine, for Bi, As and Sb, respectively. It has also been calculated that (i) the copper content of the vacuum calcine may be recovered by feeding it into a Peirce-Smith converter during its slag blow, and (ii) the resulting recycling could increase the minor element treatment capacity of a smelter by 100 % while also reducing the blister As content by a factor of three. The experimental results are briefly discussed and a treated dust recycling option is examined. Example operating conditions are presented and available commercial technology for the vacuum calcination of the mixtures is reviewed.

HISTORY AND LOCATION SEAL HARBOR GOLD MINES, LIMITED, was incorporated in January, 1934, to take over 116 acres of mining lands in the Stormont gold district, Guysboro county, Nova Scotia. The nearby ten-stamp Mulgrave mill was also purchased, and since that time 974 acres of adjoining properties have been secured from the Government by direct lease. The property is served by a motor road and is about two miles from the village of Goldboro, situated on the shore of Isaac's harbour. The bulk of ?the supplies are brought in by coastal steamer from Halifax, a distance of about 100 miles, since the nearest railway connections are at Antigonish, some 40 miles distant. EARLYY WORK The Seal Harbor properties include the old Partington and Beaver Hat mines. A small tonnage of ore was mined from each and treated on the properties in stamp mills, which were later torn. down . A survey of old records shows that this ore averaged about $8.00 gold per ton. Development work by the present Company was confined to the 100-foot level until February, 1935, but after that rime the incline shaft was deepened to 425 feet and the 300-foot level was explored east and west of the shaft. Six belts of ore were intersected to the west of the shaft. The ore from these belts was hand sorted and the ore portion was put through the 10-stamp Mulgrave mill to defray operating expenses and to serve as a sample of the deposits. The average recovery per ton from this sorted ore was $6.10. Samples of the ore were sent to the testing laboratories of the Mines Branch, at Ottawa, and of Canadian Industries, Limited, at Toronto. Recommendations from both of these authorities were for removal of the coarse gold by concentration and barrel amalgamation, followed by cyanidation of the residue.

"Heap leaching of low-grade copper-cobalt oxidized ore and solvent extraction of copper, cobalt, manganese, and zinc were investigated. Heap-leaching parameters were optimized using agitated and tray batch leaching tests, capped by tests on a pilot semicontinuous heap-leach plant. The optimum pregnant leach solution yielded 2,350 mg/L Cu, 3,800 mg/L Co, 3,600 mg/L Fe, 130 mg/L Mn, 25 mg/L Zn, and 0.58 g/L solids in suspension, with pH and acidity of 1.27 and 3.66 g/L, respectively. Copper, cobalt, and impurities (Mn and Zn) were extracted using (v/v) 30% CP-150, 20% IONQUEST® 290, and 20% D2EHPA, respectively; overall recoveries of copper, cobalt, and impurities were 98, 99, and 70%, respectively.RÉSUMÉ La lixiviation en tas des minerais oxydés de cuivre et de cobalt et l’extraction par solvant du cuivre, du cobalt, du manganèse et du zinc ont été étudiés. Les paramètres de lixiviation en tas ont été optimisés à l’aide d’essais de lixiviation en discontinu sur un plateau, complétés par des essais relatifs à une usine pilote de lixiviation en tas en semi-continu. It treats oxidized ores of copper and cobalt that are recovered by sulphuric acid heap leaching (Trujillo, Cisternas, Gálvez, & Mellado, 2014; Kime, Kanowa, Mulaba- Bafubiandi, & Diyambi, 2016) and solvent extraction processes (Crane, Urbani, Dudley, Horner, & Virnig, 2009; Fisher, 2011; Kime et al., 2016). The ore to the plant is primarily sourced from the Luita and Mukondo mines. Geological prospecting work by Gecamines and Boss Mining showed that the Mukondo mine contains a very large cobalt reserve not yet exploited, but with grades as low as 0.2%.Currently, Boss Mining is focusing on the production of copper, but is investigating methods to efficiently produce both copper and cobalt. A challenge in the production of cobalt from this ore is its presence in the third oxidation state. This requires the addition of reducing agents, which increases the overall operating cost (Kime & Makgoale, 2016). Cobalt solvent extraction is also very sensitive to impurities such as nickel, zinc, manganese, and aluminum, which are often co-extracted (Swartz, Donegan, & Amos, 2009). This sensitivity to impurities requires the optimization of operational parameters to lower impurity levels as much as possible in the electrolyte."

Studies on the properties of rocks heated to high temperatures are rather rare. Such research is occasionally conducted for example; in areas around nuclear power plants. The national Polish coal gasification (underground coal gasification, or UCG) project has, however, forced the analysis of the geomechanical properties of heated rocks in the vicinity of a designed geo-reactor. Ukrainian experience with UCG show that rocks up to 2 m from the burned coal seam be at a temperature > 600ºC. Such a high temperature will undoubtedly influence their physical properties. This paper presents studies on the strength and deformation properties of carboniferous rocks in the Upper Silesian region, where the UCG process is planned. Three types of rocks were tested: claystones, mudstones and sandstones. Laboratory tests of these rocks evaluated compressive strength, elastic modulus and weight loss. An evaluation of the results of the tests comparing the thermal conductivity of rocks and their specific thermal capacity was then carried out. All of the rocks studied were heated to 300, 600 and 1000ºC, and also evaluated at room temperature. This procedure shed new light upon the behavior of heated rocks in relation to their distance from the designed geo-reactor. Introduction The Little Long Lac mine is situated in the Thunder Bay mining district, township of Errington, Ontario. The mine is located on the south side of the most westerly bay of Little Long Lac. The property consists of 36 claims, which comprise some 1,400 acres. This group of claims was staked in August, 1932, by Tony Oklend and Tom Johnson, and, after surface sampling, was optioned by the present controlling interests, who diamond-drilled it during the winter of 1932-33. In early spring, a small steam-driven plant was installed, and shaft sinking commenced on June 1st, 1933. During the summer, all supplies are transported to the mine from Hardrock station, at mileage 18 on the Canadian National Railway line from Longlac to Port Arthur. At Hardrock, which is seven miles from the mine, the railway skirts a bay of Little Long Lac, and supplies are loaded directly from railway cars to scows. Two scows are used, of 30-and 45-ton capacity, respectively. A 36-ft. pointer, powered by a 35 h.p. engine, is used as a tug. A good winter-road has been cut out from Geraldton to the mine, for winter transportation. Geraldton is about two miles north of the mine, and is also located on the Canadian National railway. A hard-surface road is now being constructed for summer as well as winter use. Geology The Little Long Lac gold area covers the northern limits of a large synclinal structure, the contact of the Keewatin flows and sediments, striking about twenty degrees north of west, with the dip of the sediments varying from eighty degrees north to seventy degrees south, the average being around eighty degrees south. The vein worked by Little Long Lac Gold Mines occurs in massive sedimentary rock of about the composition of arkosic or quartzitic greywacke, and consists of a shear-zone up to fifteen feet in width, striking N.75°E. and dipping steeply to the south, which has been filled by numerous narrow, parallel quartz veins and. veinlets. These are well mineralized. with arsenopyrite, pyrite, and some chalcopyrite and stibnite, and carry considerable quantities of visible gold. They show more than one age of quartz deposition, the quartz being fractured and re-cemented. The arkosic rocks separating the veins and veinlets are also slightly mineralized with pyrite. Work to date has indicated the probability that the vein-shear is controlled by local drag-folding.

The microbial-mediated recovery of valuable metals locked in mining wastes presents an economical alternative to conventional hydrometallurgical processes. The present study investigated the bioleaching response of a low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite tailings (0.6 wt% Ni) and an upgraded pyrrhotite tailings (1 wt% Ni) produced by Vale Base Metals in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, with the ultimate aim of maximizing Ni recovery. The initial part of the study focused on the bacterial adaptive evolution protocol, by repeatedly sub-culturing an indigenous culture from an acid mine drainage site on 2% (w/v) pyrrhotite tailings. The results showed that the extent of Ni dissolution is positively correlated with microbial activity. Microbial profiling revealed A. ferroxidans to be the dominant member of the microbial consortium. The enriched culture was used for optimizing the growth medium by varying the concentration of essential growth nutrients. Finally, an aerated biotic and abiotic leach of a 10% (w/v) upgraded pyrrhotite tailings with and without pH control, showed a higher recovery of Ni in the pH controlled experiments. These results demonstrate that a high concentration of the oxidant Fe3+ in solution promotes the dissolution of Ni. Furthermore, the sulphide conversion into So was found to be higher in the pH controlled experiments (32%), relative to the experiment without pH control (10%).

Introduction During the past few years, a number of changes in the mine operations at Copper Mountain have taken place. The modernization and mechanization were necessitated and given impetus by wartime and other conditions, which were: (1) The urgent need for copper for wartime purposes. (2) The scarcity of skilled labour for underground work. (3) The increase in labour and supplies cost. (4) The necessity of finding ways and means of increasing the output per man-shift, because of the scarcity of skilled labour and the rising cost of labour. (5) The desire to increase safety measures, reduce the silicosis hazard, and aid mine ventilation. (6) The desire to improve the general working conditions in the mine for all workmen. (7) The desire to reduce the amount of dilution in the ore stream by a more selective yet highly productive method of mining. To this end, mining with diamond drills, and transferring broken ore with slusher hoists, appeared to be the answer to the problem. After considerable discussion and estimation of costs for comparison with those of the operation as carried on at that time, the proposed methods were tried out and, in practice, gave very gratifying results. Reference at this point is made to the paper written by C. H. Brehaut, W. N. Taylor, H. A. Shannon, and R. S. Douglas, which was published in the September, 1945, issue of Mining Technology, by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Inc., and subsequently in commercial mining journals. Since that time some improvements have been made in undercutting an orebody - the first through experiment and practice, the second through making use of the earth's barodynamic or gravitational forces. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and discuss these later developments.

"One of the major commercially viable secondary sources of rare earths elements (REE) are the ion-adsorption ores, containing 0.05-0.3 wt% rare earth oxides physically adsorbed on the surface of clay minerals formed during weathering of lanthanide-rich rocks. Although ion-adsorption deposits are substantially lower grade than other types of rare earth sources, this is offset by the easier mining and processing costs and the low content of radioactive elements. The conventional extraction route involves ion exchange leaching with monovalent cation solutions (usually ammonium sulphate) under ambient conditions; during the process, the lanthanides are desorbed and transferred into solution, being replaced by the exchange cation. While ammonium ions are known to perform best, there is increased environmental motivation to investigate alternative lixiviants in order to minimize ammonium sulphate impact via reducing its use without considerable loss in rare earth recovery.The objective of the present research was to screen various cations salts (alkaline and alkalineearth metals present as sulphates, chlorides and acetates, respectively) in order to comparatively evaluate lanthanide desorption levels and provide a theoretical base of the observed behaviour. The overall aim is to gain a better understanding of how both cation and anion may affect the overall REE recovery from ores in order to provide alternative processing routes. The distinct exchange capabilities of cations were explained in terms of differences in cation hydration enthalpy within the same group, i.e. Cs+ > NH4 + > K+ > Na+ > Li+ and Ba2+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+. For the same cation, it was determined that REE extraction efficiency follows the order sulphate > acetate > chloride, based on dissimilarities in constants of formation values. Various process implications scenarios will be described based on using mixed cations and anion matrices."
