Introduction The apparent commonplace, and prosaic, nature of building-stones, lime, cement, gypsum, and clay products, and many other miscellaneous non-metallic minerals, such as abrasives, barite, diatomite, magnesite, mica, slate, salts, etc., and their everyday appearance and necessary in our lives, has removed much of the glamour, romance, and speculative attractiveness so frequently associated with our gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper mining ventures. However, it will be readily appreciated, with but a brief study of the thirty-five or more non-metallic minerals and products which are mined, prepared, or are known to occur, in British Columbia, that the 'industrial minerals' industry in the Province has an abundance of interesting technical problems, is fraught with speculative possibilities, and, as such, fully deserves much more technical attention than it has hitherro received. The brief notes presented in this paper show, in summary form, the magnitude of the British Columbia industrial and non-metallic mineral industry; outline in synoptically form the principal deposits of non-metallic minerals presently known; and indicate in a general way a few of the possibilities which exist in the Province for the expansion of the industry. For convenience in presentation, the assembled material has been divided into four sections: 1.-Sraristical information 2.-Strucrural non-metallic minerals 3.-Miscellaneous non-metallic minerals 4.-Non-Metallic mineral possibilities in British Columbia 1. -Statistical Information The writer does not propose to dwell at length on the statistical comparisons and deductions which may be drawn from the four tables which have been compiled for this section of the paper, nor is it considered essential, as the figures present a most emphatic story in themselves.

Aircraft utilization, weather and cost data are given for three separate projects north of the sixtieth parallel in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. These operations, carried out by helicopter-equipped geological and prospecting parties, have cost $24 to $30 per square mile, depending principally on the distance from the base. They provide adequate surface exploration of areas with 40 to 50 per cent rock outcrop. A good one-inch-to-one-mile geological map can be made. T HE exploration of the Canadian northland has been given increasing attention by the mining industry during recent years. In many cases, the initial problem is to make an adequate reconnaissance of a large area where existing geological information is meagre. The Geological Survey of Canada pioneered the use of helicopter-equipped geological parties for mapping at a scale of eight miles to the inch.

Introduction In this review, which is the fifth of the series on the Progress in Coal Technology, an attempt has been made to outline some of the more important developments that have taken place in coal carbonization during the last decade. Research into both high-and low-temperature carbonization has been active for three principal reasons: (1) the growing shortages in most countries of high-quality coking coals; (2) the demand for smokeless fuels for domestic purposes; (3) the need for metallurgical coke for the increased output of steel in the post-war years. The growing importance of coal tars as a source of chemicals for the preparation of synthetic products and of coal gases for the recovery of sulphur is evident. Many of the researches initiated because of wartime necessity have been continued .and even expanded in the post-war years. High-temperature carbonization with a suitable coal yields a strong coke which is used primarily for metallurgical purposes, a tar with good marketable value, and a large yield of gas of medium calorific value. Low-temperature carbonization gives a more free-burning solid product suitable for a domestic fuel, a high yield of a tar which is generally regarded as superior to high-temperature tar for chemical purposes, and a smaller yield of a higher-heat-value gas.

This paper briefly describes some of the phenomena encountered when materials are submitted to extremely high pressures, such as those produced by the detonation of an explosive charge placed in contact with the material. It was found that extensive changes take place in the? microstructure of iron and steel. Diffusion-controlled processes, such as the transformation of lamellar pearlite, the recrystallization and grain growth of ferrite, and the homogenization of the pearlite-ferrite structure, can take place within micro-or milliseconds. Mechanical twins can propagate without deviation from ferrite to pearlite, thus indicating a proeutectoid ferrite-pearlite-ferrite orientation relationship. The propagation and interaction of intense stress waves in materials was demonstrated with the use of Armco iron. Finally, a comparison is made of the damage produced in metals by the formation of craters made by explosive shock and by hypervelocity impact. The Quality index is a useful tool allowing to assess the metallurgical quality of aluminium AlSiMg foundry alloys (A356/357). Its value is calculated from the ultimate tensile strength and elongation; it increases with the metallurgical quality of the casting, i.e. with finer dendrites, lower microporosity and inclusion count and lower iron content. This Quality index does not depend on the degree of temper applied during the heat treatment (aging time and temperature). After defining the Quality index, it will be explained how it can be predicted from the knowledge of the local solidification conditions obtained from modelling. The paper will then present four case studies of castings for which the prediction of the Quality index by modelling was made. These case studies from different authors will involve the three most common casting processes used for producing high integrity aluminium castings, namely: sand casting, permanent mould casting and investment casting (lost wax). In all cases, the accuracy of the prediction will be assessed by comparing the predicted Quality index distributions to the experimental values based on the published measured values of the local tensile properties.

"Due to the increasingly stringent cleanliness requirements for final steel products, there has been a growing interest in the possible use of micro-bubbles for the removal of inclusions with diameters smaller than ~50µm, present within the steel passing through a steelmaking tundish. However, several technological barriers have prevented the adoption of this technique in industry. These are related to a) the generation of micro-bubbles in liquid steel, b) the measurement of bubble size distributions, and c) the optimization of bubble injection conditions to create micro-bubbles. In the present study, a novel Aqueous Particle Sensor (APS) system was developed for the in-situ, on-line, detection of micro-bubbles in water, generated by a newly designed full-scale ladle shroud, located at McGill Metal Processing Centre (MMPC). Measurement results from the sensor were validated against bubble size data collected through a high speed camera and post-processed through the commercial software, Image J.Control variables and orthogonal experiments were designed to assess the dependence of average micro-bubble sizes and bubble size distributions on key experimental parameters. Those chosen were the air inlet flowrate, the distance of the gas injection port from the slide gate, and the number of injection ports used. The investigation demonstrated that the APS system can be successfully adapted to detect micro-bubbles up to ~800 micron diameters. Using this novel sensor, it was shown that multi-port injection using low air inlet flowrates, closer to the slide gate, were useful in forming small micro-bubbles within the flow through the ladle shroud. The results from the APS system were compared and validated against data resulting from an optical technique. INTRODUCTIONModern industry expects increasingly stringent cleanliness requirements for final cast products. Therefore, the numbers and sizes of inclusions need to be strictly controlled in steelmaking operations. Thus, the cleanliness of steel products depends on the amount, morphology and size distributions of nonmetallic inclusions in steel (Zhang L. & Thomas B., 2003). Since large, deep, tundishes provide longer nominal residence times for liquid steel passing through it to the exit SEN’s, this can provide the ideal place to separate inclusions, and bubbles can assist by removing help attach inclusions and float them to the top surface."

"Chah-Palang tungsten deposit is one of the two tungsten indexes in Iran. Based on ore characterization techniques (including optical mineralogy and XRD analysis), quartz, chlorite, atacamite, azurite, malachite, ferberite, illite, goethite and calcite were distinguished as major minerals. The representative sample was analyzed qualitatively by using X-ray fluorescence and chemical assay. Results showed that grade of tungsten oxide and copper were 1.76 and 7%, respectively. Also precious metals such as gold with grade of 1 ppm was reported in the sample. By using the mineralogical studies on the prepared sample, the liberation degree of tungsten minerals in –0.6 mm size fraction was obtained 80%. Several tabling tests were carried out on the original sample which at the optimum conditions and as a result, the grade and recovery of tungsten in concentrate reached to proximately 23 and 59%, respectively. To increase the grade of tungsten in the final concentrate, acidic leaching were performed on the tabling concentrate and its appropriate results indicated that the grade of tungsten increased to 27%. Also more than 90% of copper was extracted as a byproduct in the fallowed process.INTRODUCTIONTungsten, a unique hard, heavy heat-resistant metal, is distributed erratically in economic concentrations throughout most continents, occurring mostly as small irregular deposits that are not readily adaptable to large-scale, low-cost mining methods. The diverse physical characteristics and mineral composition of tungsten ores also present problems in beneficiation, requiring complex hydro- and pyrometallurgical treatment to yield high-purity concentrates suitable for the production of ferro alloys, carbides and super alloys in the steel industry (Hausen, 1989; Kholmogorov & Kononova, 2005). Tungsten is most frequently used as tungsten monocarbide, which has hardness close to diamond, in cemented carbides. The most well-known use of tungsten is in lighting filaments, and other important applications include improving steel properties and use in tungsten alloys, electronics, and chemical products (Hausen, 1989; Kholmogorov & Kononova, 2005)."

"A short description of the chamber lift method for producing oil wells is followed by some comments on compressor requirements and gas utilization. A quantitative analysis of the process is presented and, based on this analysis, criteria are suggested for selecting wells for which this type of lift might be suitable. The analysis leads to the conclusions that chamber lift is an efficient producing mechanism for wells having very low productivity indices (say about 0.05 bbl/d/ p.s.i. or less), but that for such wells optimum utilization of injection gas cannot be attained. It is suggested that the gas injection time per cycle should be kept as low as possible, compatible with a small oil fallback volume, and that the cycle frequency should be in the range of 20-40 cycles/ day. For wells with productivity indices of 0.2 bbl/d/p.s.i. or higher, chamber lift is relatively inefficient; how-ever, if well allowables are low it may offer an attractive, low cost, alternative to gas lift or pumping."

The construction and startup of a new mine is a daunting task. To successfully locate, design, build and startup an immense human endeavour like a new mine, takes perseverance, planning, dedication and significant capital. The application of capital requires a thorough evaluation of risk and where that risk is most properly limited to create the risk/return profile. One area of significant capital and thus, significant risk is the selection and maintenance of the very machinery needed to deliver the creation of investor wealth. Albian Sands Energy is the operator of the new Muskeg River Mine located north of Fort McMurray in Alberta?s oilsands. The Muskeg River Mine is owned by a joint venture of three companies: Shell Canada, Chevron Canada Ltd.and Western Oil Sands. The mine is designed to run 400,000 tons per day, 365 days per year. The mine conditions vary from material as hard and of similar consistency to pavement to underfoot conditions as soft as saturated sands. Water cannot be drained below surface conditions, shovel teeth can disappear in less than 24 hours and the primary business is often constructing large civil structures that have little to do with the delivery of ore. The mine starts with the deposit (if it doesn?t exist, nothing else matters), moves into the design, the feasibility study and the approval. The evaluation of risk and the strategies surrounding the control of that risk truly lie after these stages are complete. The strategy and execution stage is where risk is eliminated or accommodated. The point at which the investors money is being spent is the point at which the decisions made cannot be reversed. It is of absolute importance that the execution of the decisions are consistent with the strategy agreed to, lest the investors need to be asked for more money. The key sources of risk identified for the Muskeg River Mine were recruitment of trained and experienced personnel and the delivery of ore to maximize early (<2yr) cash flow. The Muskeg River Mine personnel determined that to minimize risk, personnel would be recruited to operate the mine equipment yet, the requirements for maintaining the equipment would best be held by the manufacturer. The strategy was to obtain the correct equipment for the operation of the mine and leverage the supplier?s expertise to ensure the mine wasn?t training a maintenance organization at the same time as a mining organization. In essence the key strategy for the mine start up and early operation was to leverage the equipment suppliers to maintain and repair the equipment. Albian Sands would maximize the utilization of Maintain And Repair Contract?s.

"Training Program at Sherritt Gordon's Ruttar:. ConcentratorA formal training program for mill operators is being developed and employed at Sherritt Gordon's Ruttan Concentrator. The program was set up to fulfil the needs created by a shortage of skilled reliable labour, a 200% turnover of personnel within the first six months of operation and the rapid advances in mineral processing technology. All new employees are introduced into the Mill Department through an orientation program designed to familiarize them with the operation of the plant. All training and orientation of new employees is the responsibility of a. small training section consisting of two training foremen and one assistant. Using a combination of classroom and supervised on the job training, the training times have been cut by at least one half. High operating standards have been set and are maintained through the use of detailed manuals for each work area and competent instruction at all operating levels. The major portion of training costs arise from the salaries of the training staff but are negligible when compared to the improved recoveries, smaller turnover and less downtime. Government assistance is available to all industrial employers to offset the costs of training employees."

"9.1. INTRODUCTIONIn Chapter 5 of Volume I royalties are dealt with and several topics would appear to be duplicated in this Volume. However, Volume I may be looked upon as a general guide, whereas this Volume is a reference volume. It deals in considerable detail with specific provisions and concepts relating to royalties between private parties. This does not, however, mean that Chapter 5 can be ignored. It should be looked upon as a source of general information concerning royalties between private parties and as a negotiating aid intended to give an overview of various topics. You may well find that in its general approach it will lead you to ask a question which, hopefully, will be dealt with in this Volume .It should be remembered that royalty agreements are agreements with a particular focus, and so the concepts set forth in Chapter 1 apply to them. This chapter addresses a few considerations specific to royalties that will usually form part of an agreement rather than a stand-alone agreement.9.2. FORMAT FOR ROYALTY PROVISIONSIn many of the cases where royalties arise, they are adjunct to, or part of, other arrangements. For example, a royalty may form part or all of the consideration to be given to an owner upon purchase of his property, or it may arise if a joint venturer ceases to contribute to the venture and has his interest converted to a royalty.1 It is with such situations that this section primarily deals; if the royalty is contained in an agreement that is singularly, or primarily, concerned with creating it, then it is just a normal agreement.Commonly, by the time the right to receive the royalty arises, at least some of the other provisions of the agreement have been performed and/or become redundant. For example, in an option agreement the royalty will be a continuing obligation of the optionee, usually arising only after the option has been exercised.2 In a joint venture agreement, a royalty will often arise where the interest of a non-participating venturer has been diluted and converted to a royalty, in which case the recipient will usually become a passive party, entitled only to his royalty, and most of the rights that he enjoyed as an active venturer will cease to be effective."

The heat pipe is a self-contained, passive structure that uses a liquid-vapour fluid cycle to provide high thermal conductance . Through the proper selection of working fluids and container materials, heat pipes have been operated at temperatures ranging from less than -300°F to more than 3,000 °F. The passive nature, high efficiency and configuration flexibility of the heat pipe are presented. The application of McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company Cryo-Anchor® heat pipes for foundation and support stabilization in permafrost regions is discussed. Using the proven Cryo-Anchor technology base. a proposed application of heat pipes in a cold -region mine ventilation system heat recovery heat exchanger is presented. Information obtained from the development of an air-cooled heat pipe steam condenser provides the technical basis for large -scale heat pipe applications.

"The Eastern Abitibi Sub province (Quebec segment), contains two main types of gold deposits: the common quartz-vein type and the rare pyritic type. Both occur in areas dominated by volcanic rocks and are spatially associated with major fault zones.Quartz-vein gold deposits consist of simple to complex networks of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins in reverse shear zones and extensional fractures. They occur in areas dominated by mafic volcanic rocks and are commonly associated with small syn- to late-tectonic porphyritic felsic intrusions. Associated alteration, which postdates peak metamorphism, is dominated by carbonatization, sericitization and pyritization of the wallrocks. These deposits formed late in the geologicalevolution of the Abitibi.Pyritic gold deposits range from deformed massive sulphide lenses to zones of syntectonic pyrite-rich veinlets and associated pyrite disseminations. These deposits occur in environments dominated by felsic volcanic rocks that are typically converted to sericite schists near the deposits. The associated pre-metamorphic aluminous alteration is now characterized by metamorphic sericite, andalusite, kyanite and chloritoid, overprinted by a late retrogression of alumino- silicates. These deposits probably represent deformed volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, but the timing of gold introduction in these is not fully understood.The differences in geological attributes reflect significant differences in the genesis these deposits: the pyritic deposits probably have a multistage genesis, including a pre-tectonic stage, in contrast to a single stage late-tectonic genesis for the quartz-vein deposits.RESUMELa partie Est de la Sous-Province de l’Abitibi( segment québécois) renferme deux types de gites d' or: ceux de type ""veine de quartz"" et ceux, plus rares, de type ""pyriteux"". Ces deux types se trouvent dans des secteurs particulièrement riches en roches volcaniques et mantrent une association spatiale avec des zones de failles majeures.Les gites de type ""veine de quartz"" correspondent à des réseaux de complexité variable de veines de quartz-carbonate-pyrite se développant dans des zones de cisaillement inverse et des fractures de tension. Ils se concentrent dans les régions dominées par des roches volcaniques mafiques et s’associent fréquemment à de petites intrusions porphyriques felsiques syn- a tardi-tectoniques. L’altération associée ace type de glte est postérieure à la phase majeure du métamorphisme et consiste en une carbonatisation, une sericitisation et une pyritisation des épontes. La mise en place de ces gites est tardive par rapport à l'évolution géologique de l'Abitibi.Les gites d' or de type pyriteux consistent en des lentilles de sulfures massifs déformes, des zones d' abondantes veinules pyrite uses syntectoniques, et des zones de pyrite disséminée. Ces gites se retrouvent dans des empilements contenant surtout des roches volcaniques felsiques qui sont transformées en schiste à séricine pres des gisements. L’altération a l’umineuse pre-metamorphique associée a ce type de glte a donné naissance, lors du metamorphisme regional, a la sericite, a 'andal ousite, a Ia lcyanite et au chloritoi""de; par la suite, les alumino-silicates ont été affectes par une alteration retrograde tardive. Ces gites representent probablement des depOts de sulfures massifs volcan gènes déformes, mais la chronologie de la mise en place de l'or dans ceux-ci est encore mal comprise.Les caractéristiques géologiques propres à chacun de ces types de gites reflètent des conditions de formation différentes: le type ""pyriteux"" montre une histoire génétique polyphasée, incluant une étape pre-tectonique alors que le type ""veine de quartz"" s’est développe au cours d’une seule phase tardi-tectonique."

Note. - Securing mine roof through consolidating thin or otherwise incompetent strata to increase overall thickness of the immediate roof beam is a new method of roof support and control which has aroused great interest amongst mining engineers and which is now being experimented with and thoroughly investigated by the United States Bureau of Mines. A paper on Roof Bolting, illustrated by photographs and motion-picture films, will be presented by Edward Thomas, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at the forthcoming Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. In the following pages, Mr. Thomas describes the methods used in roof bolting as illustrated by the photographs that accompanied his paper. The photographs are supplied through the courtesy of the United States Bureau of Mines, whose willing cooperation with miners and mining engineers in Canada is very well known and even more greatly appreciated. This method of publishing Mr. Thomas&apos;s paper is adopted because few, if any, Canadian mining engineers have actually seen installations of roof bolts and it is felt that the best possible presentation of such an interesting subject through the medium of the Bulletin will be attained by publication of the photograps over explanatory captions. - Ed.

Operating CIP/CIL gold recovery plants in the arid regions of Western Australia face unique challenges due to water and ore quality issues. The presence of cations of Mg, Fe and Cu metals in water supplies and leached sulphide ores can have considerable effect on plant consumption of lime and cyanide, due to pH buffering and complexation effects. Reagent costs are critical to many of these operations. In this paper, computational modelling is used to analyse a number of process options to mitigate such issues. This requires careful consideration of the chemistry of the process system, and the ability to predict accurately the response of speciation and precipitation reactions to changing process conditions. The Mg-Fe-Cu-CN-H20 system is specifically modelled in this application. The Gibbs Free Energy Minimisation thermodynamic framework has been selected to model equilibrium phenomena. Furthermore, this approach has been extended to the process flowsheet level, incorporating multiple unit operations and recycle streams in a steady-state mass balance model. The Gibbs equilibrium composition module of HSC Chemistry software has been successfully integrated into the commercial flowsheeting package SysCAD. Consideration of the Gibbs Energy Minimisation capabilities of other flowsheeting packages has also been given. This approach has been successful in simulating the aqueous process chemistry typical of such plants. It has resulted in a predictive capability where equilibrium states respond appropriately to process changes. Potential cost savings may be identified by examining alternative process conditions to minimise overall reagent consumption.This methodology may be extended to other hydrometallurgical plants where issues of solution ideality, temperature and other equilibrium processes are sufficiently understood.

"1880s - Unmasking the Sudbury Basin Falconbridge Ltd. turned 60 in 1988 but its roots go back more than a century to the discovery and development of the mineral resources of the Sudbury Basin. Nickel was first identified in the area in 1856 but sustained exploration awaited the early 1880s and the advance of the CPR westward from Sudbury. Rock was laid bare in the right-of-way and by forest fires and logging. Reddish oxidized outcropping or ""gossan"" were exposed, heralding the presence of nickel as the shape of this astounding geological formation gradually began to emerge. Many great mines of the area were opened up in this period on the south rim of the Basin west of Sudbury. To the east the ore dips below overburden, however, and Falconbridge remained a mere dot on the map until the turn of the century when Thomas Edison detected a magnetic occurrence by dip needle."

"This paper gives the organizational history of Luscar Ltd. and its various coal producing operations. Each 0/ the operations is then described individually. They include the Bienfait Mine, the Boundary Dam Mine, the Diplomat Mine, the Luscar Mine and the Coal Valley Mine. The company&apos;s plans/or expansion are also discussed. IntroductionLuscar Ltd. is an Edmonton-based energy company formed in 1967 through an amalgamation of two pioneer coal companies-Mountain Park Collieries and Luscar Coals Ltd. In 1912, Mountain Park Collieries initiated the development of an underground mine in the Coal Branch area of Alberta. This mine necessitated the establishment of a townsite and the provision of rail access. The second operation, Luscar Coals Ltd., was established in 1921 at Luscar, Alberta. This was also an underground operation and required the development of a rail spur and townsite. The product from both mines was used to fuel railway steam locomotives until the 1950&apos;s. The market demand for coal decreased as the use of the diesel locomotive increased, so that these operations were finally closed in 1954. Through the amalgamation of the two companies in 1967, however, Luscar Ltd. was formed to become an active participant in the revival of coal operations. Western Canadian Luscar Ltd. is involved in the exploration, development, production and marketing of coal, coal products, oil and gas. Luscar Ltd. is currently participating in five producing mines (Fig. I). The Diplomat Mine, approximately 125 miles southeast of Edmonton, was in production when it was acquired in 1949 by Luscar Coals Ltd. In 1966, the Bienfait Mine and char plant were added. The Luscar Mine, which is a 50/50 joint venture of Luscar Ltd. and the Consolidation Coal Company of Canada, and is operated by Cardinal River Coals Limited, started production in 1969 on the original Luscar Coals Ltd. mine site. The Boundary Dam Mine was opened in 1974. Both the Bienfait and Boundary Dam operations are located in the lignite coal fields of southeastern Saskatchewan. The most recent addition to the group is the Coal Valley Mine, 40 miles southwest of Edson, Alberta. It commenced commercial production in July, 1978 under the operation of Luscar Stereo (1977) Limited."

"The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work revealed the effect of water glass on the flotation of scheelite by FTIR and the wettability change of the usual cleavage plane, and proved that water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend in traditional fatty acid flotation process. A new collector, benzohydroxamic acid complexes, was found to be selective for the separation of scheelite and calcium minerals with little water glass. Hence a novel flotation process was developed for the recovery of tungsten minerals in shizhuyuan mine in China. Normal temperature flotation of tungsten minerals was developed to instead of the classical “Petrov's process” for scheelite-calcite-fluorite type ores. Compared with the traditional process, the recovery was improved by 10% and the grade of scheelite concentrate was above 55%. The disappearance or decreasing of water glass contributed to improving the recovery of tungsten and fluorite and the circulation of water and reagents.INTRODUCTIONChina is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves (Cai Gaipin et al., 2009). However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resource has become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Scheelite deposits were classified to scheelite-silicate type and scheelite-calcite-fluorite type based on the associated gangue minerals. Scheelite was easy to separate from the silicate minerals. Flotation separation of scheelite from calcium minerals creates difficulties because of the existence of the same cation in the minerals and similar physicochemical characteristics such as solubility, hardness, specific gravity, PZC (point of zero charge) etc.(Arnold & Warren, 1974; Yongxin & Changgen, 1983; Ozcan & Bulutcu, 1993a; Deng et al., 2015, 2016;). The conventional collectors used in the flotation of scheelite ores are generally fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives ( Yongxin & Changgen, 1983; Oliveira & Sampaio, 1988; Sivamohan, 1988; Shi et al., 2014; Bo et al., 2015). It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from calcite with these reagents because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface (Atademir et al., 1979; Changgen and Yongxin, 1983; Hiçyìlmaz et al., 1993; Hu et al., 2011). Therefore, it is almost impossible to separate them by fatty acid flotation without using any selective depressant. Although oleoyl sarcosine was used as a selective collector in the flotation of fluorite and siliceous scheelite ores (Ozcan & Bulutcu, 1993b; Ozcan et al., 1994), this selectivity is not adequate for a low-grade calcitic scheelite ore. Unfortunately, the reagents such as organic colloids (dextrine, starch), quebracho, sodium phosphates, sodium silicate solutions containing polyvalent cations (hydrosols), etc. (Yongxin and Changgen, 1983; Schubert et al., 1990; Shi et al., 2014; Bo et al., 2015) used for calcite depression also depress scheelite to a large extent."

"The treatment of an oxidized copper-gold ore by stage cyanide addition was investigated. For cyanidation, free cyanide ion concentration can be an indicator of whether there is copper dissolved in cyanide solution, and maintaining the free cyanide ion concentration lower than 1.0 g/L could be an effective way to prevent copper dissolution and reduce cyanide consumption. For that purpose, stage cyanide addition was introduced to control free cyanide ion concentration within the range from 0.8 to 1.0 g/L. Cyanidation tests results indicate that gold extraction was still acceptable at reduced cyanide consumption with a lower copper extraction. Based on the experimental study, industry application works at Beiya concentrator of Yunnan province, China were successfully conducted. When the raw ore contains 2.95 ppm Au and 0.75% Cu, by stage cyanide addition method, the gold extraction was still 93% at reduced cyanide consumption of 2135 g/t, which was only half of one addition method, and the copper extraction dropped to only 5%, which indicated that dissolution was prevented for almost 75% of the malachites.INTRODUCTIONCyanide with its competency to form a strong complex with gold, is the most preferable lixiviant for gold leaching. However, cyanidation is not inherently a selective process since many other minerals present in the ore are also readily soluble, especially the copper minerals. Muir (2011) reported that every 1% reactive copper present in the ore consumes about 30 kg/t NaCN, which can have detrimental effects on the process efficiency and economics due to high cyanide consumption, reduced gold leach rates and poor gold recovery."
