The Nagambie heap leach gold mine commenced production of gold in September, 1989. The mine,120km north of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, was developed by Perseverance Mining Cor- poration Ltd, a junior Australian mining company, with no other operating mines. Gold production to December 31, 1990 was 47,621 oz. The mine is now producing at the rate of about 45,000 oz per year. As of February 28, 1991, resources at the mine are 5.1 million tonnes measured, at 0.65g/t Au while reserves were 1.65 million tonnes at 0.86g/t Au of proven, heap leach ore, plus 0.37 million tonnes at 0.40g/t Au, of dump leach ore. Metallurgical recoveries expected are 80 per cent for the heap ore and 60 per cent for the dump ore. Perseverance Mining Corporation was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on April 2, 1987, after a capital raising in March that year. At this time the company's issued capital was 4 million ordinary 25ó shares, 3 million of which were issued to the public to raise $0.75 million.

Optimisation and mathematical formulations for open pit design and long-term production scheduling have been available since the 1960s. There are two main concerns in the application of existing mixed integer programming (MIP) models in open pit mines: a. the feasibility of generating both optimal solutions and practically mineable scheduling patterns and b. the inability to deal with in situ variability in orebodies and account for uncertainty. In dealing with these issues, a general open pit production scheduling method for multi-element deposits is presented and subsequently used to optimise the long-term production schedule in a nickel laterite deposit. The application shows the weaknesses of MIP formulations in terms of generating optimal solutions as well as practically feasible mining patterns. The application of the same formulation in the presence of in situ orebody variability and uncertainty uncovers a major reason for deviations of scheduled production from actual production, and outlines additional limits of traditional optimisation formulations as well as future needs.

In this paper, a neurofuzzy model is proposed for the development of an explanatory model of an industrial gold leach circuit based on historic plant data. A regression tree was used to partition the data in the predictor variable space and the structure of the tree was used as a basis for the derivation of fuzzy rules that could be integrated into a fuzzy expert system useful for operator decision support or process control. The position and shape of the membership functions were optimised with a backpropagation algorithm in a neural network framework. The approach yielded a significantly better explanatory model of the gold losses in the plant than comparable linear models. Although a regression tree could perform somewhat better in accounting for the variance of the dissolved gold losses, the tree was less robust than the fuzzy model.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addtion to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

A wide range of models are available to computer process simulators that require a large number of parameters which often are physical measurements, coefficients, calibration factors and functional forms. This makes it intuitively difficult in the majority of cases, to tune the parameters in order to simulate a circuit in agreement with experimental results. Unit calibrators operating on the principle of least squares minimisation of the difference between predicted and observed plant data, are relatively successful when the parameters are unconstrained and independent of each other. In the case of constrained parameters, a set of carefully chosen transforms is presented which map the unconstrained variables being minimised into the constrained parameters required for the model. This technique has been used successfully with the Powell minimisation algorithm and it may also be applied to other unconstrained minimisation methods. Necessary model characteristics are discussed to enable these transforms to be applied to interdependent model parameters such as points of a graph. The Hellyer orebody is a fine grained, massive sulphide Pb-Zn-Ag- Cu-Au deposit located in western Tasmania. Initial testwork showed that the orebody would be difficult but not impossible to treat by conven- tional flotation. A staged programme-of work was commenced to demon- strate that marketable concentrates could be produced with satisfactory recoveries. Following laboratory testing of drill core to define two flowsheets, bulk samples of Hellyer totalling 20,000 tonnes were trialled at 6 tph in the Cleveland concentrator over six months. The high through- put and extended duration of the trials ensured maximum confidence in the results and that scale-up to subsequent plants would be with a mini- mum of risk. The milling trials were successful and the Cleveland concentrator was expanded in early 1987 to treat 250,000 tpa of Hellyer ore to produce 85,000 tpa of bulk concentrates. Late in 1987 construction commenced on a 1 mtpa concentrator at Hellyer to produce separate copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates.

This paper describes the design of the steel fibre reinforced precast concrete (SFRC) segmental lining for the intake and discharge tunnels for the Gold Coast desalination plant in Queensland. In addition, the key design requirements and design methods for the lining of these 2 km long, 2.8 m internal diameter tunnels, including structural, durability and maintenance requirements are discussed. Details of the segment configuration and erection process are presented along with information on the manufacture and trial testing of the concrete for the segments. The paper also gives a brief introduction to steel fibre reinforced concrete behaviour. Construction of the tunnels commenced in April 2007, and the authors believe this is the first application of this technology in Australia.

Today's emphasis on the enterprise bargaining process must be seen as an opportunity for organisations to further develop occupational health and safety standards at work. In particular, this shift from a centralised industrial relations system to employer, employee bargaining, presents organisations with an excellent opportunity to develop OH & S at the `shop floor' level. This is despite real difficulties in presenting hard data on the cost benefits. Unfortunately, examination of enterprise agreements ratified by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC), show that less than 32 per cent contain provision for occupational health and safety. Those addressing the issues of occupational health and safety have included segments such as: ò rehabilitation activities; ò a new emphasis for workplace occupational health and safety committees; ò formalising procedures related to hazard identification and control; ò the use of personal protective clothing; and ò occupational hygiene and health monitoring issues. For example, an enterprise agreement reached between CIG-Gases and their unions, included clauses which commit employees to attending ten safety meetings and two work place inspections each year, in order for them to receive any further pay rises.

In simple terms, heap leaching means the removal in solution of valuable elements from a heap of material, and their recovery from that solution. The heap of material can consist of essentially unprocessed ore, sub-ore, low grade gangue and country rock, tailings from other upgrading processes, or artificial materials such as slags or furnace and flue products. The solvents can be solutions of acids (commonly sulphuric acid because of cost) or of other chemicals such as cyanides. Because of cost factors the solutions are aqueous; because of this, leaching operations may be curtailed in cold-climate areas. The guiding principle must surely be `large volume / low cost'. Since solutions are generally easier to manage than gases, there is a strong incentive for replacing roasting of materials by leaching, eg arsenical gold ores. Where sulphides are present in the material to be leached, these may provide the necessary acid, with or without the aid of bacteria, to dissolve and extract the recoverable metals. The mineralogical aspects of the operation relate to the nature of the `ore' and gangue minerals present in the heap, their textural relationships, and their effect on the process itself.

The northern margin of the Arunta Block is characterized by a metasedimentary and volcanic sequence of lower metamorphic grade than that of the central Arunta Block. Whereas the Harts Ranges have granulite to amphibolite metamor- phic grades, the northern margin only reached greenschist to lower amphibolite facies. Most of the high grade area of the central Arunta Block appears to be unprospective, but the lower grade marginal fringe contains most mineral pros- pects to name a few: Barrow Creek, Molyhill and the Jervois Mine. Numerous smaller prospects occur in this marginal zone. Four major lithostratigraphic units can be recognized in the Jervois Mine area: 1. Gneissic Suite consisting of granitic and rhyolitic gneisses which are characterized by a distinct intersection lineation. 2. Metasedimentary Suite of cordierite- biotite schists and chlorite-biotite schists. 3. Mine Sequence, consisting of spotted schists with andalusite and cordierite, quartz- sericite-feldspar schists with distinct rhyo- litic remnants and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists which contain the lode horizons:

The removal of nickel from lead by sulfur drossing was investigated using a technique which models industrial batch decoppering practice. Successful denickeling to 0.005% (Ni)pb was consistently obtained in the absence of silver, well below the experimental equilibrium value of 0.015% but still above levels obtained in industrial practice. Silver appeared to have little effect upon denickeling. The final nickel content was dependent upon the initial nickel content, the total sulfur addition and the stirring time. The presence of nickel was found to give no assistance to successful decoppering. Simul- taneous removal of nickel and copper was observed at silver contents in excess of 0.02%. Extended stirring resulted in a further lowering of the nickel content but reversion of copper to the bullion was observed. Experimental work has shown that nickel can be removed by a standard decoppering operation; a procedure which is used in secondary lead re- fining. Alternatively nickel can be removed during initial decoppering in primary lead re- fining operations.

Sluice-boxes are by far the most widely used concentrating devices by small-scale operators in PNG who work alluvial gold deposits. The sluice-box designs and their operating conditions used are known to vary widely. The selection of sluice-box configuration and the operating parameters such as the water flow rate is purely based on past experience. Some use small flowrates to increase the fine gold recovery at the expense of efficient separations and capacity while others use high flow rates resulting in increased fine gold losses but with high throughput rates. Recent work has revealed that the combination of riffle height, their spacing and wash water flow rate are the most important parameters that determine the success or failure of such operations. This combination has been shown to depend on the in situ gold and gangue size distributions of the deposit being processed. This paper describes a design procedure which uses a non-linear optimisation method to determine the optimal combination of the above parameters to maximise the metallurgical efficiency of such operations.

This paper is intended to help design engineers, operating staff and plant managers understand the principles of metallurgical gas handling systems design. It also explains operating, safety and energy savings issues that the designer should take into consideration in the design of process off-gas systems for sulfide smelters. Primary smelting reactors, converters, and other off-gas sources impose challenging duty requirements on the various components of the gas handling systems. This paper reviews the design of common system components including the hood for gas capture at the system inlet, gas conditioning, gas cleaning, ductwork, dampers, hot gas fans, and the appropriate use of instrumentation and controls. The engineer must also be aware of how ductwork system effects and heat losses influence system performance. Also, the analysis of a recently-designed gas handling system will be reviewed, which includes high-strength SO2 gas from a smelting reactor, asymmetrically located Peirce-Smith converters, and a gas mixing chamber to mix the gases before they are sent to two acid plants of different sizes.

All the mentioned problems calls for effective tools for mine design, mine operation and mine reclamation. Third millennium brings next challenge given by advances in information and communication technology. The development of very sophisticated software tools provides to technical systems some features of autonomous æthinkingÆ and intelligent behaviour. We can find large effort and a lot of scientific papers reflecting last advancement in science and technology and providing inspiration for new mining technology of third millennium called Intelligent Mine. Some aspects related to creation and utilisation of æIntelligent ModelsÆ as a background of æIntelligent MineÆ are presented and discussed in this paper.

A new process has been developed to remove the impurities copper, cadmium, cobalt and nickel from a zinc plant electrolyte by cementation on zinc dust. The process has been tested in the laboratory and in a continuously operated pilot plant. It has been found that cadmium, in the presence of small amounts of antimony in solution, assists the removal of cobalt. Cementation is conducted in two stages: the first stage for removal of copper with a small excess of zinc dust to produce a relatively high grade product, the second stage for removal of cadmium, cobalt and nickel by addition of zinc dust in the presence of anti- mony. The excess zinc and the cadmium present in the second stage cementate can be selective- ly recovered by slow leaching in spent electrolyte. Zinc dust processes in use elsewhere are described and compared with the present system for use in the Risdon circuit.

This paper describes the technique developed by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories (ACIRL) for the treatment of bore core samples to obtain data for coal preparation studies of the target reserves. The particle size distribution within the sample has a significant influence on the relationship between the yield and ash per cent of the floats coal at any ash level. The size analysis within the reconstituted feed from a coal preparation plant is determined by the size analysis of the feed coal, physical degradation of material in the process, and the breakdown of associated shales in water. The extent of material breakdown was studied in the ACIRL coal preparation pilot plants. The method of bore core evaluation includes simulation of this breakdown in a sample selectively crushed to conform with predicted or known run-of-mine size distribution. Modifications have also been made to the laboratory methods for froth flotation to approximate more closely with industrial practice.

The Sirosmelt top submerged lancing system has many applications in the smelting of base metal and complex materials. It has particular advantages for smaller scale smelting and the treatment of recycle materials in smelters where its low capital and operating costs and its operational flexibility are of immediate benefit. The system can be fueled by oil, gas or coal, as well as by mixtures of fuels. For many applications, the use of coal as a fuel has operating cost advantages over oil and gas, but conventional pulverised coal feeding systems entail very large capital expenditure and this militates against the use of coal. The methods available for improving on conventional technology for coal firing of Sirosmelt systems are discussed and operating experience with alternative systems are outlined. The use of coal as a reductant in the Sirosmelt system is also discussed.

A sustained eight-year major research effort has been undertaken in South Africa to develop integrated passive water treatment systems for the sustainable removal of sulfates, while simultaneously addressing the removal of metals and acidity. The research effort addressed the problem both at a fundamental science level and at the more empirical pilot plant level. Whereas there are numerous anaerobic sulfate reducing reactors in operation on mine waters that remove some sulfate together with metals and acidity, these are typically plagued by low sulfate removal efficiency and gradual reductions in overall reactor efficiency with time. The South African research effort has focused on understanding the fundamental microbiological and biochemical reactions that occur in anaerobic reactors filled with lignocellulosic material and subjected to high sulfate water. Hypotheses have been developed that differentiate the reactions occurring in such a reactor into groups that should be individually optimised and these hypotheses have been verified through rigorous laboratory and pilot scale studies. The results of this research are incorporated into a patented multi-stage integrated passive treatment system that is capable of sustained high rate removal of sulfates, metals and acidity.

Hydrogen and oxygen isotopic constraints on hydrothermal fluid composition from the Pliocene Boyongan and Bayugo porphyry copper-gold deposits (southern Philippines ) reveal mixing of magmatic and sea water reservoirs as the hydrothermal system evolved. Magmatic-equilibrated fluids (d18O: +8.3ë to +9.1ë; dD: -61ë to -51ë) are represented by hypersaline brines implicated in copper-gold transport and deposition. These dominate the fluid inclusion assemblage in early comb-quartz (unidirectional solidification textures), miarolitic quartz, and in K-silicate-stage quartz-K-feldspar ¦ biotite veins. Fluids responsible for post-K-silicate alteration assemblages of pyrite-clay (illite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite), alunite and smectite are represented by low-moderate salinity two-phase inclusions in co-existing quartz. These are interpreted as mixtures of evolved magmatic fluids (d18O dD: -42ë to -20ë) with evolved Pliocene sea water (d18O: + 4.0ë; dD: +4ë). The isotopic evidence for sea water involvement in the hydrothermal system suggests that porphyry emplacement and associated diatreme formation could have occurred in a submarine setting. Ore sorting has long been used to raise the efficiency and thus lower the environmental impact of mineral processing operations. It was first instituted as hand sorting, according to a humanly perceived difference in the ore, but is now automated using large mechanical sorters in order to meet the high tonnage throughput required in most minerals processing applications. In the past, ore sorting was generally used as a niche processing route when other approaches failed, and in this context, consequential environmental benefits are often not the first consideration in adopting sorting. When applicable, ore sorting offers environmental benefits in reductions in fines waste, reagent usage and energy consumption in milling. Although there are significant opportunities for the use of ore sorting technology in many minerals processing operations, industry applications, to date, have been limited mainly to the processing of diamonds, magnesite, talc and uranium ores. This limitation has principally been due to a lack of suitable sensing technologies for a wide range of ore types. The authors report on a wide-ranging review of the automated sorting of mineral ores, and in particular, on methods for discrimination of ore characteristics prior to mechanical sorting.
