Some of the major factors affecting ore reserve estimation in gold mines are discussed together with their impact on computational methods.The major priority in ore reserve estimation is to get sampling and geological problems resolved. Poor basic information cannot be remedied by mathematical methods.Generally the more complex a deposit becomes the greater the need for subjective assessment and the less applicable are more complex ore reserve methodologies.

Polarization phenomena associated with the use of an agitated bed of particles as an electrode for metal deposition were studied. The concentration polarization at this type of electrode is much smaller than that occurring at a fixed or moving electrode surface. Agitated particle electrodes can be used to electro-reduce copper from solutions over a wide range of concentration and at cur·rent densities up to 2000 AIsq. ft. of bed cross section.

Valuation exercises need, however, to be seen in the broader context of a thorough business appraisal, one that incorporates all disciplines employed in the resources industry. Fine tuning a discount rate or determining a particular capital structure is likely to be less important to valuation than an adequate understanding of industry dynamics and a company's likely performance in future years.

Geological heterogeneity is one dimension of complexity in mining. Significant effort is put into developing an understanding of this complexity so it can be used in resource estimation, mine planning and economic modelling. However, over the decadal lifespan of a mining venture, many other dimensions add to the complexity of a mining operation. These include: technological evolution, market fluctuations; investor confidence; social norms; local expectations; and ecosystem functionality. As with geology, these factors are all heterogeneous, uncertain, time varying and represented through sparse and incomplete datasets. Recent work (Valenta et al) is beginning to show us how these risks correlate in different global settings. By analysing data relating to known, but as yet undeveloped copper deposits, this work (the complex ore body database) is demonstrating that it is the combination of issues (both price sensitive and non price-sensitive) that determine the viability of a deposit for extraction in the 21st century.CITATION: Littleboy, A, Plint, N and Valenta, R, 2018. Pezzimenti Laserbore designed, fabricated and commissioned the first microtunnelling machine in Australia in 1986. The System was initially a very basic one, developed in isolation to the overseas explosion in microtunnelling growth headed by Japan and Germany. Market needs in Australia have demanded increasing flexibility in microtunnelling capacity-longer distances, variable ground conditions and larger diameters. The one constant throughout the development process is in maintaining high accuracy û the attribute which most readily differentiates microtunnelling from other limited steering techniques.This paper will highlight the features of microtunnelling by drawing on case studies of completed projects.

The location of the Inglewood Goldfield is 40 km north-west of Bendigo on the Calder Highway and covers an area of over 1600 hectares. The field was discovered during the 1850s gold rush and over 16 000 people camped on the field. Mining first began in 1859 and since then more than seven tonnes of gold has been removed from four major lines of reef. Most of the gold was won in the period between 1900 and 1940.. Goldquest NL currently has leases over approximately 1550 hectares and through its historical research has identified 142 known reefs.

Synthetic hollow microspheres have demonstrated reliable sensitization and detonation characteristics in industrial explosives for almost two decades. During that time, water gel formulations and use conditions have changed. The introduction of emulsion explosives has also dictated technical improvements in microsphere sensitizers. In contrast to microspheres, gassing or other sensitizing techniques often cannot satisfy the manufacturing and blasting characteristics required of today's explosives. This paper discusses the sensitizing properties of microspheres, formulating guidelines and quality considerations. Packaging, sampling, transfer, metering, mixing and pumping information is also provided.

The regulation of environmental management in the minerals and petroleum industries has been undergoing considerable change over the past decade. In recent years, there has been a distinct trend towards smaller government and increased environmental awareness. Current regulatory systems have generally neither responded to these trends nor effectively dealt with the demands placed on them. There is a need to develop a more effective means of providing assurance to Government and the community that its environmental objectives are being met. These means must also enable industry to have an effective environmental management process.

There are two main challenges in analysis of spectral data: to output as accurate an interpretation of the sample mineral assemblage as possible and to then use the spectral data to map out trends (downhole, across section or traverse) that will assist the exploration geologist to target drilling and further exploration. This paper will discuss methods of extracting the maximum amount of information from spectral data and examples of plotting the information downhole, in section and plan view to assist in exploration and mining. The information requirements of the Australian Stock Exchange Ltd for listing and reporting seek to ensure that the market is fully and correctly informed in a timely manner. This discussion confines itself to the technical reports from mining companies required for prospectuses, information memorandum, quarterly, annual reports and any other announcements to the Exchange. The Exchange requires that technical reports are produced by suitably qualified and experienced personnel and, in the case of a company listing, that these personnel have no interest in the company to be listed. Further, the Exchange has draft prospectuses reviewed by other independent suitably qualified and experienced personnel.

Six Australian coals were selected to determine their potential to produce, ultra low ash (less than 2 per cent) coal by progressive size reduction followed by density separation and/or froth flotation. Density separation in organic liquids is effective in the absence of contaminating liberated mineral matter which can be removed by froth flotation with several cleaning stages. The limit of cleaning of these coals was an ash value of 1 per cent while commercially attractive yields were obtained at 2 - 3 per cent ash depending on the coal.

Refractory application in the major iron and steelmaking units are discussed. Mechanis- ms of refractory consumption as revealed by pre- vious studies are reviewed and current practice is evaluated. Deficiencies in refractories now in use are noted and some lines of development are indicated. The iron and steelmaking units discussed are generally restricted to those subject to slagging, structural change or erosion at steel or iron making temperatures, and include the Blast Furnace, Hot Blast Stoves, Hot Metal Ladles, Basic Oxygen Furnaces, Continuous Cast- ing Units and Steel Teeming Ladles.

An increase in the silver to gold ratio with increase in depth in the main ore shoot of the Crown-Crescent lode in the Emperor gold mine, Fiji, was found to be due mainly to vertical zoning of gold-silver tellurides. The zoning resulted from a two-stage sequence of ore mineralization.The application of some recent studies of the synthetic Au-Ag-Te system to natural gold-silver telluride assemblages is discussed.

Gravity concentration of gold is an important facet of gold processing technology in Western Australia. While great interest has been directed at gold leaching technology and considerable developments achieved, gravity concentration has received much less attention and this paper provides an update on the current practice and developments that have been achieved in recent years.A survey of 72 gold processing plants in Western Australia was conducted in 1991 and some 31 questionnaires were returned for analysis. Of these, 19 plants were using gravity concentration and this paper highlights some of the features of these operations.

With the recent collapse in commodity prices the size and number of resources project has diminished markedly in recent years. Coupled with the disappearance of the "open cheque book approach", this has led to a revival of the lump sum or turn key project. The key features of this mode of development are compared with the "owner managed" and "reimbursable cost plus fee" alternatives - with respect to schedule, cost and quality control. Key facts for the successful implem- entation of this mode of development are identified. However, the approach is not advocated for all projects and the potential shortfalls are also identified.

The conversion relationship between the Bond Work Index W1, specific output of mill and the energy efficiency of grinding were developed using dimensional analysis. These relationships were validated and the value of the conversion coefficient ~ was also obtained using a new installed device for measuring grindability of ores. With the new simulating algorithm the mill specifications, output and size distribution of grinding products of industrial mills can be calculated based on laboratory measured results. Depending on material commodity market conditions, material contained in open pit waste disposals can hold potential value, Segregating subgrade material into separate disposals i.e. 'sub ore' stockpiles, affords open pit operators the opportunity to modify production strategies to reflect changes in market conditions. Discussion of the concept of subore stockpiling is presented. A two-step mathematical model and a nonlinear programme are employed to answer questions such as, 'how can the value of sub-ore material be determined to distinguish sub-ore from true waste?' and 'when and at what rate should sub-ore be processed?'
