Efforts to stabilize international markets in commodities have gradually intensified during the course of this century in keeping with the grow- ing complexity and interdependence of the world economy and the increasing involvement of government in economic activity. Successive Australian Governments have con- sistently supported the concept of commodity agreements and arrangements in an effort to lessen short term fluctuations in price and to moderate the boom/bust conditions which tend to charac- terize production and trade in many commodities. The objective is to stabilize price at a level which equates supply and demand over the life of the arrangement. Such action involves a degree of market inter- vention and government involvement in the inter- national trade in the commodity concerned; the acceptability and desire to foster such arrange- ments varies from country to country depending upon attitudes to market intervention and man- agement. However attitudes, even among those opposing commodity agreements, have under- gone a major reversal in this century. Before the first world war, such intervention as existed almost entirely involved the physical producers. There was almost no government involvement and at that level most regarded commodity agree- ments as neither desirable nor practical. However government regulation of such activities as pro- duction and marketing of food during World War I, coupled with post-war shortages, followed by overproduction and the crash in prices during the Great Depression, stimulated producer gov- ernment interest in commodity market regulation. Consumer governments took a little longer and with a few exceptions, it was not until the post World War II period, that the fear of shortages of basic commodities brought some consumer countries to accept the concept.

Comminution is the most power-intensive process in the technology for ferrous quartzite concentration. That is why improving comminution efficiency leads to the most appreciable economic effect on the concentration process. The trend towards reducing the lump size of crushed ore before charging the mill is considered to be of major importance in improving comminution efficiency. A considerable number of investigations have been performed in this direction. At the same time, a strong interest is also maintained in the increase of comminution efficiency due to optimisation of process taking place in the mill. Recently, investigations of the power intensity of the breaking process inside the mill have been carried out at the Krivoy Rog Mining Institute. It was ascertained that the routine conditions of comminution at a low mill ball charge ratio resulted in an unnecessarily high power consumption due to the force of impact of falling and milling bodies far exceeding the power required for comminution. For example, the power value for falling balls of 60 - 125 mm in diameter reaches 0.3 kNm, and the force and stress due to ball contact with the lining reaches 60 kN and 250 MPa respectively. These values exceed the force required for comminution by a factor of ten. Analysis of the mechanism of ore particle size reduction during comminution in the ball mill indicates that the size reduction is due to impact load, attrition load, and static load. The efficiency of size reduction is very low. During comminution in the ball mill, impact loads prevail and amount to 85 - 90 per cent of the total load. In this situation, not more than 10 - 15 per cent of destruction is due to attrition.

ecent work on decoppering lead is reviewed; CuS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. he mechanism of decoppering is discussed, and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is dvanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300¦C. CuS, hich is not, an equilibrium product, is found in decoppering drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3pb2S2 formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by tirring in sulphur. Decoppering bismuth is thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of uBiS2. The Cu-Pb-S system is the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as ' resence of ternary sulphide or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June, 1,,896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to -the works, the firewood being of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides).The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about 42 sq. 'miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The tonnage of wood yielded per acre varies from 40 to 100 tons on stack measurement of 80 cub. ft. per ton, 60 tons per acre being considered a good average yield. The gross amount of firewood handled during the past 13 years approximates 1,200,000 tons, the greater portion of which has been obtained by ordinary tramming methods. Reliable sampling practices are the key to optimising the market value of a mining or chemical companyÆs stock. As a result, reliable sampling standards are needed. However, current standards on sampling present the æuniversalÆ Pierre GyÆs Sampling Theory in an ambiguous way. For example, the Total Sampling Error is divided into its basic components only in informative annexes, when it should clearly be the main body of the standard. Sampling standards are presently loaded with statistical concepts that actually belong in the annexes. Furthermore, many non-probabilistic sampling procedures are still mentioned which do not belong in a standard. The objective is not to criticise existing sampling standards, but to suggest better ones. Sections on the Sampling Theory should divide the Total Sampling Error into a sum of its nine basic components. Then, and only then, should they be addressed one at the time. Sections for establishing a sampling protocol should address the in situ Nugget Effect, the Fundamental Error, the Grouping and Segregation Error, the Long Range Quality Fluctuation Error, and the Periodic Quality Fluctuation Error. Sections for sampling methods, mechanical sampling, manual sampling, grab sampling, sampling of trucks, railroad cars, bags, and drums should be part of the critically important practical implementation of a recommended sampling protocol, called Sampling Correctness. It includes the increment Delimitation Error, the increment Extraction Error, the Weighting Error, and the Preparation Errors. Unless these errors are addressed one at a time, in an unambiguous way, the standard will remain ineffective in solving sampling problems for the industry. Therefore, a strategy is needed to create better standards required at the early stages of new projects, both by manufacturers of sampling equipment and by engineering firms. A logical sequence of important points that cannot be ignored in any sampling standard is presented. An analysis of the practical use of the words sampling uncertainty versus sampling error is recalled. Finally, as a practical example, an in-depth analysis of the correctness of cross-belt samplers is presented, and emphasis is placed on the correct ways to perform bias-tests for mechanical sampling systems.

Mining professionals recognise the need and application for reconciliation and value tracking. It is necessary however to examine our current reality, and evaluate the following. Do our reconciliations really balance correctly, and are we able to track value effectively throughout processes? If we are honest, in most operations the answer is a resounding no. This means that we are surrounded by fluctuation and deviations that we do not account for and do not understand. This is astounding, because given our level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should have a good understanding of our environments and be able to manage them effectively. How do we manage effectively if we are surrounded by so much uncertainty? The purpose of this paper is to describe, at high level, the principles of reconciliation and value tracking, to highlight some areas where deviations are introduced into the mining process, and to propose a different approach to the apparent reconciliation and value tracking conundrum. The paper also poses several questions that need to be critically addressed at most operations. Instead of making the same mistakes each month in reconciliations, mining professionals need to acknowledge two facts. Firstly there will be uncertainty that we need to accept, since all our estimates are based on sampling, an orebody is not homogeneous and peopleÆs behaviour will influence the process, etc. Variability will always exist and lead to uncertainty. What is the current approach in the reconciliation process when a deviation occurs and how do we use reconciliation and value tracking to manage and improve our business? The second fact is that we need to stop using reconciliation and value tracking to only measure and report. We need to adopt a new approach to manage mining throughput, where reconciliation and value tracking are enablers to the success of the business. In most mining operations, significant effort goes into planning and measurement for the purposes of reconciliation and value tracking. The importance of accurate and effective reconciliation and value tracking should be to ensure the maximum utilisation of the resource, maximising throughput and enabling the business to deliver a product to its client, of the correct quality and in a timely manner.

What is the best method of splitting a sample from a reverse circulation drill rig? How important is it to obtain a correctly split sample? What is the impact of an incorrectly split sample? These are just a few of many questions asked daily in the mining industry with regard to sampling. Modern sampling theory is well described in the literature in texts and is taught in short courses throughout the world, however little has been published on the relative performance of sample splitting devices used in the field. This paper compares the performance of the Jones tiered riffle splitter with a cone splitter manufactured by SGS Metal Craft in Western Australia. The testwork was carried out at AnglogoldÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. Mineralisation at Sunrise Dam is hosted in a structurally complex framework of shear zones with dips that range from steep (70¦) to shallow (25¦). The deposit is characterised by significant amounts of coarse gold, which presents a challenge in sampling, analysis and grade estimation. The three major areas where sampling errors can occur are in drilling, sampling, sample preparation and analysis. Sampling errors attributable to drilling and sample preparation often far outweigh the errors made at other stages in the process, however historically most effort to identify sampling errors has concentrated on the laboratory and analytical procedures. Splitter design and cleanliness can have a large impact on sample collection and preparation. Splitter performance was tested with respect to sample weights, particle size distribution, and gold grade consistency. The aim was to determine if each particle has an equal probability of being sampled, the resulting sample has integrity, and if any segregation problems occurred. The cone splitter was found to provide the best split in terms of particle size distribution, with no apparent size bias. Duplicate samples had more comparable masses than those provided by the riffle splitter. Most importantly, the cone splitter gave less grade variability between duplicate samples than the riffle splitter. Testwork also confirmed that, like the riffle splitter, the cone splitter must be oriented vertically and the design of the rig or cone splitter trailer should accommodate this requirement.

To those who have been engaged in the construction of mining and metallurgical plants during the war and post-war periods, it is quite unnecessary to point out the large increases and violent fluctuations in prices of basic commodities and the steady and persistent rise in labour costs. It may, however, be of interest to present these facts in graphic form, and survey the relative heights of the various maxima and the lead and lag of individual waves. Since Descartes demonstrated for us moderns the analogy between geometric form and algebraic statements, the two-dimensional graph has found widespread application. Mathematicians have developed for our information, if not for our confusion, the triangular diagram and the solid three-dimensional figures, which have proved so useful, at least in the hands of the metallurgists at Port Pirie. The model (Plate 1.) which is exhibited here does not pretend however, to indicate the connection between any three inter-related variables, and it is not proposed to burden members with any abstruse mathematical expression for the irregular surface of the blocks. While time is an ordinate common to all sections of the model, each illustrates separately the variation in cost of some particular quantity between the years 1914 and 1922. It is an easy matter to record such individual variations, but it would be an impossible task to state any equation describing accurately the dependence ot the prices, say, of hardwood or of galvanized iron upon that of labour at any particular point of time. The cost of living curve, which has attained such prominence, if not notoriety, in the last few years, is the result of an attempt to show the mass-effect of the components. It is the difficulty found in "assigning the correct weight to the separate items which makes the aggregate curve somewhat misleading at times.Turning to the model, it will be noticed that each section consists of half a dozen pegs.. The $2.5 billion EastLink project is a 39 km tollway and includes twin three-lane, 1.5 km long, undrained driven tunnels with cross passages every 120 m. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. The design of the permanent concrete lining and waterproofing system for the EastLink tunnels was both innovative and practical, to meet the demanding environmental and production constraints of AustraliaÆs largest road project. This paper describes several key aspects of the tunnel design and construction, including: design of fully tanked, permanent concrete tunnel linings for the main tunnels and cross passages to withstand 37 m head of water pressure in combination with potential rock loading in the future;optimisation of the tunnel shape to minimise the amount of reinforcement required and the design of special welded mesh which was developed within manufacturing constraints;100 year design life and durability considerations in every aspect and detail of the design including concrete mix design and stray current mitigation;development of a precast invert solution for the main tunnel permanent concrete lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimise risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic;development of prefabricated reinforcement details for the junctions between the main tunnels and the cross passages to enable faster construction and minimise risks to the membrane associated with fixing reinforcement; andincorporating the tunnel drainage sump at the lowest cross passage in the alignment, resulting in deep excavation to satisfy the required storage volumes for drainage.

Base metal skarns have provided most of South KoreaÆs Pb-Zn production since the end of the Korean War, with the bulk of production coming from the Yeonwha group of mines. Currently only the Kumho Zn-Pb mine remains in production, while magnetite skarns are mined as iron ore at the old Yomisan and Ulsan base metal deposits. Base metal skarns within Korea fall into two groups; those hosted in Cambro-Ordovician limestone sequences, situated mainly in sub-basins in the northeast of the peninsula and those hosted within carbonate volcaniclastics of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, in the southeast. Sulphide mineralisation is dominated by sphalerite, lesser galena, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, with subordinate chalcopyrite and molybdenite with Ag-Co credits. Skarns are composed of pyroxene-clinopyroxene-garnet-carbonate-quartz and magnetite, grading into silica-chlorite hornfels. Most of the significant deposits display both pipe-like and stratabound morphology. In the Hwanggang district, a zoned distribution of Ordovician carbonate hosted, polymetallic Mo-W and Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag base metal deposits is observed around the margin of a Cretaceous granite intrusion. Similar polymetallic zoning is recognised in the Sangdong district, where deposits include Sangdong (W), Abisan (Au-As) and Yomisan Northwest (Zn-Mo) and Yomisan Southeast (Zn-Cu-Co), hosted in Ordovician carbonates in proximity to Cretaceous quartz porphyry intrusives. The Taebaeksan district hosts the largest deposits at the Yeonwha group of mines. Although production ceased in 1993, significant resources remain, hosted in Ordovician limestone and dolomite that have been intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry dykes. Deposits in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin consist of bedding concordant, vertically stacked base metal skarn mineralisation at several stratigraphic horizons, connected by carbonate-base metal veins with a pipe-like geometry. Evidence such as massive sulphide layers and restricted proximal carbonates suggest mineralisation was initially partly syn-depositional, with both base metals and carbonate venting onto a lake floor, being reconstituted to skarns by later magmatic activity. Skarn mineralisation is universally closely associated with the Cretaceous Bulgugsa Series acid intrusive activity. A common intrusive-structural relationship is recognised at some deposits, with bedding plane and imbricate thrust faulting, introducing felsic intrusives as sills. These intrusions probably introduced the base metals, carbonate, boron, heat and silica, which metasomatically reconstituted the carbonate lithologies to form skarn assemblages. The Korean base metal skarn deposits are regarded as Zn-Pb chimney-manto skarns and display similarities to the Mexican manto type deposits.

Segmental tunnel linings are becoming more common in Australia. One current project employing a segmental lining is the City West Cable Tunnel (CWCT) in Sydney. The project has been commissioned by Energy Australia and is currently being constructed by Thiess Pty Ltd. The project includes 1.6 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven, segmentally lined tunnel. The majority of the CWCT will be excavated through Hawkesbury Sandstone. The tunnel is required to carry a 132 kV electrical circuit under SydneyÆs central business district (CBD), between Haymarket and Energy AustraliaÆs City North Substation on Sussex Street. The segmental lining has been designed as a 3.2 m internal diameter, 200 mm thick universal ring with six trapezoidal segments. The design and detailing of this segmental lining presents some noteworthy challenges, including exposure to saline groundwater, and the exclusive use of steel fibres for flexural and tensile concrete reinforcement. This paper describes some of the key elements of the segmental lining design. These include:the case for choosing segmental linings over other forms of tunnel construction;the major design checks required of a segmental lining including ground loading, hydrostatic loading, joint bearing, joint rotation, ram loading and the early strength lifting case;the benefits of using steel fibres over conventional steel reinforcement;the design approach used for steel fibre reinforced concrete;the application of 3D computer modelling in the design;the provision for components including connector dowels and gaskets;the design for passive fire resistance; andthe design for durability of steel fibre reinforced concrete in a saline environment. Segmental lining design requires the application of specialist design approaches. Input is required by the construction team, as the methods of demoulding, handling, transportation and installation impact on the lining design. As the segmental lining is functioning as immediate ground support and also a permanent lining, high standards of manufacture and construction quality control are required to ensure that the 100-year design life is met. The requirement for a watertight tunnel means that detailing and installation of the EPDM gaskets is of importance.

The question of prediction and prevention of dynamic events û rock bursts (RB), tectonic rock burst (TRB) and mining-induced earthquakes (MIE), induced by large-scale mining, are discussed. The mine itself and the host geological environment are taken as a natural-technical system (NTS) whose evolution is characterised by alteration of the adaptation-bifurcation (catastrophes) periods. So, to predict TRB-MIE means to predict the limiting NTS states that are determined from the NTS geological monitoring data, and to prevent the said events means to control the processes of rock deformation and failure within the critical zone. The study considers particular examples of how TRB-MIE-events are predicted and prevented in apatite mines, Kola peninsula, Russia.

The purpose of blasting during mining is to produce a muck pile that can be efficiently loaded and transported. There is an increasing awareness of the variation in muck pile characteristics and its economic implications. It is well known that good fragmentation by itself is not sufficient to optimise the muck loading efficiency. The swelling and configuration of the muck pile also significantly affect the productivity of the loading equipment. The characteristics of a muck pile depend upon the blast design parameters, explosive properties and rock mass geology. This study has focused on the dependence of muck pile configuration on blast design parameters, explosive properties and size distribution of the muck.The field work was done in two phases. In the first phase 12 blasts were monitored, while in the second, three blasts were monitored. The blast design parameters and explosive properties for each blast were documented and the following muck pile characteristics were measured:muck pile height and its distance from the facedistance of throwwidth of the power troughsize distribution by image analysis technique.The effects of burden, bench height, heave energy of explosive, row-to-row delay, powder factor and the mean particle size of the fragments on muck pile configuration were examined. It was observed that muck pile height and distance of throw are strongly influenced by the burden, bench height, heave energy of the explosive and the size distribution of the muck. The width of the power trough depends upon the row-to-row delay, powder factor and total burden. The geotechnical factors controlling the design of the open pit slopes of the Pasminco Century Mine near Lawn Hill, Queensland are presented below. Pasminco Century is a stratiform shale hosted zinc deposit in the Lawn Hill Formation that is overlain in part by the Thorntonia Limestone Formation. Both the mineralisation and overburden is located within a competent rock mass such that intact rock strength and discontinuity spacing is generally sufficient to prevent large-scale slope failure by breakage through the rock mass. Rather, overall slope stability issues are dominated by the major discontinuities within the rock mass. The deposit is located in a structurally complex regime, it consists of a synclinal basin which is truncated by easterly striking normal faults through its centre and northern and southern limits and by an unconformity on its eastern and western margins. Deposit geometry and slope stability is further complicated by small-scale folding, a pattern of northeast and southeast striking subvertical faults and north easterly dipping thrust faults with their associated fault emplaced blocks of Lawn Hill Formation in the overburden. The large size of the deposit requires a staged mining approach with the excavation of both final pit walls around the external sides of each stage and interim pit walls along the internal boundaries between adjacent stages. The deposit geometry and major discontinuities control not only the final pit wall design but also interim wall location and orientation, excavation sequence and in some stages the excavation schedule. Two and three-dimensional limit equilibrium stability analyses were conducted using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches to determine appropriate pit wall design criteria and to select a suitable excavation sequence and schedule.

The Cawse nickel project is a new generation pressure acid leach (PAL), solvent extraction and electrowinning process used to produce LME grade nickel metal and cobalt sulphide concentrate containing 40 per cent cobalt by treating nickel and cobalt oxide ores from a lateritic ultramafic profile. The project is located 50 kilometres NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. The commercial success of the Cawse nickel operation is dependent in part upon the ability of the principal ore type to be beneficiated. A simple process of rejecting lower grade material on the basis of particle size achieves this. The process is called upgrading and allows subgrade material to become commercial ore grade and also allows higher ore grades to be processed in the early parts of the operation. The success of the upgrade process is dependent upon the physical and chemical properties of the ore being processed and the nickel grade of the ore. The upgrade ore type represents >80 per cent of the Cawse nickel resource and is hosted mostly within a limonite unit, represented by goethitic clays in the upper saprolite zone. In the upgrade processing circuit the ore is crushed and slurried. It is then passed over a series of screens that remove all material over 0.5 mm. This ensures that coarse material is removed from the main ore stream. Upgrade is reliant on selectively rejecting lower grade or barren material, which can include silica, magnesite and relict saprock. To predict leach feedgrade, the grade control estimates the head grade and upgrade percentage for all ore delivered to the run of mine ore pad. To do this reverse circulation (RC) drill holes are logged for ore type, assayed for a range of elements and undergo simulated upgrade testwork. The percentage and grade of material rejected through the upgrade circuit has the most influence on upgrade per cent. This reject is determined by the physical properties of the rock mass and drum scrubber parameters. The correlation between nickel upgrade and reject can be established to predict upgrade from the known mass reject. Parcels of upgrade ore milled to date closely follow projected correlation trends. Upgrade circuit results have been excellent, with average nickel grades upgrading by 34 per cent, cobalt by 23 per cent, with 55 per cent mass passing.

The geographical region of South East Asia is variously defined, but generally agreed to include the Asean group - Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Other regional countries, such as Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Kampuchea etc. are of course geographically part of the region, however in economic terms, they play a minor role. It is the Asean group that dominates present economic activity and provides the overwhelming opportunity for commercial development. My experience in South East Asia has been gleaned over 15 years of regular travel in the region. More recently, we have established company offices in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia to extend and deepen contacts with major customers. This progressive development is an integral part of a planned growth pattern and will be discussed in more detail shortly. South East Asia is a rapidly developing economic growth centre, a fact which is clearly recognised and accepted by most commentators. An important question is then to be asked: Why has the region been relatively neglected by Australian, U.S. and European industrial supply companies? I will attempt to address this question in the context of industrial minerals and propose some ideas as to how effective sales programs could be developed. Firstly, let's consider the market potential provided by countries within the region. It is reasonable to suggest that industrial growth in S.E. Asia over the past 20 years has been generally steady and in some cases, explosive. Until recently, this growth has predominantly been driven by development of internal (regional) demand. Population growth and rising living standards have ensured that basic industries have enjoyed a solid uptrend in sales and production. The industries which most benefitted from regional economic development over this period were, interestingly, those which we understand to be major users of industrial minerals - glass, ceramics, paper, surface coatings, cement, refractories, rubber and plastics. Each of these industrial sectors has been influenced by different growth stimulii over a 20 year period. Nevertheless, they also enjoy a common feature which ensured an above average performance. All sectors are fundamental to an environment enjoying rising living standards and rapid growth in general prosperity. More recently, internal growth factors have been overtaken by a recognition that manufactured products from the region are competitive in export markets. This comparatively recent development provides the most interesting possibilities for higher value industrial mineral raw materials. Let me explain: For 20 years, industrial growth in South Asia has essentially been focused on satisfying domestic demand. Finished quality of manufactured items was orientated to a developing market more interested in cost than aesthetics or long life. This was reflected in raw material specifications, which often did not exist and at the best were undemanding.

Anglo American has been researching the potential benefits of inter-particle comminution techniques for several years. Inter-particle comminution has additional benefits in terms of milling circuit performance such as energy consumption and stability. This paper focuses on the flotation benefits. Inter-particle comminution leads to selective breakage, mineralogical analysis has shown that this leads to improved liberation of the valuable minerals. In addition to selective breakage, the relatively short residence time experienced in typical inter-particle comminution machines allows more efficient classification which contributes to a æsharperÆ product size distribution. The effect of particle size in flotation has been well documented in literature. In general, it is has been shown that there is an optimal particle size range for flotation, and that both above and below this range, flotation recovery is adversely affected. Results show that the narrow size distribution which results from inter-particle comminution improves flotation recovery. Furthermore, the absence of excessive fine gangue material which typically results from conventional fine (-75 ¦m) milling of talcaceous ores, can lead to 100 per cent savings in depressant consumption when such ores are subjected to inter-particle comminution. To-date, this technology has been evaluated on more than ten ores. This paper will focus on one set of results which demonstrates a number of common differences that exist between material that has been milled conventionally and using inter-particle comminution technologies, with emphasis on what the impact of these differences is on flotation performance. A pilot scale (200 kg/h) vertical roller mill (VRM) was used to produce the material, and the results shown will describe conventional laboratory batch, locked cycle and pilot plant flotation testwork.

Continuous development of complex new steel grades to meet the ever-increasing demand of high performance causes recurrent issues in steel continuous casting such as surface quality defects (eg cracks, depressions, deep oscillation marks) and productivity challenges (eg faster casting, near-net shape casting). Continuous casting of steel is a highly successful metallurgical process. Much of this success can be attributed to the performance of the casting powder that is added to the top of the mould, creates a liquid slag pool as it is heated, and forms a slag film between the watercooled copper mould and steel shell during its passage down the mould. Mould powder selection is a compromise between the conflicting requirements of heat transfer and lubrication. In an EU RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel)-funded project, various techniques are developed to offer the opportunity to adapt the slag film to meet the conflicting needs in different parts of the mould such that mild cooling can be generated in the meniscus, mid-broad face or corner areas whilst maintaining lubrication and offering higher cooling rates in other areas of mould. This has significant potential to address the industrial issues in product quality and productivity of continuous casting. This paper reports, as part of the EU RFCS project, the determination of crystallinity and porosity in slag films for casting challenging and innovative steel grades using new methods. In comparison with the methods such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis and optical microscopy / scanning electron microscopy (OM/SEM) analysis that are currently adopted by the industries, EBSD (electron backscatter diffraction) has been employed to determine the crystallinity of the slag films taken from industry casters. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) plus 3D image reconstruction has been used to determine the slag film % porosity with pore volume, pore size distribution, and pore location, which can be linked with the performance of the slag films during casting different steel grades.

Ventilation challenges are often encountered when an underground mine expands to new zones and it often is the case to make a thorough review of the existing system and assess immediate and future airflow needs at the desired quantity and quality. An unexpected mine plan change that calls for increased development and production from new areas can impose a strain on the existing ventilation system. Budgetary constraints can also demand creativity in design on the mine ventilation engineerÆs part. Since the addition of several mining horizons it had become obvious at the Meikle mine that something had to be done to increase airflow quantity and quality in the old main zones because most of the ventilation resources had been channelled for development in the new mining horizons. An airflow assessment of the existing system had to be performed and it was determined that the airflow quantity had to be increased by at least 30 per cent and the quality of the air had to be improved by reducing nuisance and respirable dust and at the same time reducing the airflow temperature before it was used in a few mining zones. At the conclusion of the airflow assessment it was determined that a third centrifugal fan would be installed on a new 3.05 m diameter borehole from surface to underground. By a careful study of temperature conditions over time it was determined that an evaporative cooling spray chamber would be sufficient to cool the airflow down from the high dry bulb temperatures observed down to saturation at the wet bulb temperature. At the same time excessive nuisance dust generated as a result of the airflow travelling a long way in a haulage drift will be knocked down in the spray chamber resulting in cool, clean air in the mining districts. Expansion of the existing surface ammonia refrigeration plant was out of the question for several reasons. The fact that the airflow was hot and dry meant that evaporative cooling spray chambers could achieve lower working temperatures at a very low cost compared to the expansion of the chilled water plant. The expansion of the ventilation system at Meikle mine and the use of evaporative cooling spray chambers were demonstrated to be very successful and the information presented in this paper can be of benefit to other mines experiencing the same ventilation problems as was the case at the Meikle mine.
