Recent studies by the authors have concerned themselves with assessing the earthquake risk to north-eastern Australia, based on available historical earthquake data for the area. There have been several significant earthquakes (Richter local magnitudes of the order of 6) concentrated in the Wide Bay - Burnett region in central eastern Queensland, although none of these has occurred close to a significant centre of population or development. Using derived average acceleration attenuation relations and world-wide data on earthquake-induced damage as a basis, conditions under which earthquake-induced liquefaction may occur have been investigated and presented in graphical form. Historical earthquake data for north-eastern Australia have been overlain on this graphical presentation and it has been demonstrated that the Wide Bay - Burnett region, in particular, may in the past have been on the verge of earthquake-induced liquefaction, where ground conditions are susceptible. When this is viewed in the context of the rapid growth in population and development in this area over recent years, the risk can no longer be ignored with impunity.

Better quality at lower cost is today's formula for remaining competitive in a world market. For an integrated steel company, high quality low cost steel production must originate before the blast furnace. In 1979, when U.S. Steel initiated a Quality Management Program throughout its steelmaking operations, efforts began at the coal, ore and flux mines. The objective was to improve the quality and reduce the variability of the critical parameters for steelmaking raw materials, to get the blast furnaces, and subsequently the melt shops, under optimum control. The general details of U.S. Steel's Quality Management Program are discussed and how it was used to promote the desired improvements in steelmaking raw materials. Some of the outstanding results obtained by the cooperative efforts between the mines and the steel plants are reported. The lessons learned by U.S. Steel were through upgrading existing operations and facilities. These principles should now be applied to new projects and the benefits of good quality management should commence from the time new projects are Commissioned.

Gravity concentration of tin at Renison Limited uses tables and spirals to treat the various coarser fractions produced from sulphide flotation tailing. An acceptable final tailing cannot be made from one pass over the tables and spirals and therefore the tailing from these separators is reground and combined with the sulphide flotation tailing as the feed to the classification section. The gravity section became increasingly overloaded in the years preceding 1976 due to efforts to maximize tin recovery to the gravity concentrate. In April, 1976, two 2DSV Reichert cone concentrators in series were installed to treat the table and spiral tail- ing stream, prior to regrind, to scavenge a small tonnage of hard, coarse low tin grade material for rejection to final tailing. Gravity section loadings were decreased markedly, allowing operator attention to be directed more to table performance than to spillage collection. An increase in mill throughput of approximately 15% was possible following the commissioning of the Reichert cones. The cones are currently operated to make the minimum tonnage of tailing consistent with reasonable- gravity section loadings.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan will total approximately 3.3 billion tonnes. Approximately 15 per cent of waste materials contain zones with varying amounts of sulfides and carbon and are referred to as æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has the potential to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulfide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments. Safe storage of reactive shale is the focus of ongoing research. Since the mid-1990s, a number of trials have been undertaken at Mt Whaleback in order to further the understanding of the physical and chemical properties of reactive shale. This paper summarises some of these trials, and discusses key learnings arising from interpretation of results. Ultimately, the learnings from this research will provide the guidelines for successful storage of reactive shale.

The geographical and geological situations of the two mineral sand deposits currently being mined by Western Titanium Limited and the mining methods in use are briefly described. Production scheduling involving the ability to vary the proportions of the major minerals produced, together with maintaining a constant feed grade to the wet concentrator has been assuming greater importance to the company in recent years as the relative value of these minerals, due mainly to technological advances and environmental considerations, is subject to significant and rapid change. Manual calculation, even using a programmable calculator, became a trade-off between man hours and data usage. Schedules were updated infrequently and only a fraction of the avail- able data was used. In July 1975 a Data General NOVA 2/10 minicomputer with a 24K word core and three cassette drives was purchased. A suite of programmes was developed using BASIC to assist in production scheduling and these were opera- tional early in 1976.

The Yilgarn Block of Western Australia presents (figure 1) a number of problems for conventional diamond exploration based on heavy indicator mineral sampling. These problems are due to the geology and unique geomorphological development of the Yilgarn Block.Essentially the Yilgarn Block is a pene- plain developed on a craton composed of Archaean intrusive granitoid rocks with meta- morphosed greenstone; which, apart from regional uplift, has not been tectonically disturbed since planation by glaciation in the Permian. Therefore since the early Plesozoic the Yilgarn Block has been subjected to terres- trial weathering conditions. Bettany et al., (1984) identify two phases of particular importance in the development of the present landforms: 1. Periods of lateritization during the Tertiary which result in the ~lassi~al laterite profile (figure 2). Duricrust indurated : Fe and Al oxides Mottled zone : Clay and Fe oxides Saprolite or pallid zone : leached clay grading into fresh rock. 2. Subsequent periods of aridity and semi- aridity during which laterite development was truncated and reworking of laterite Occurred.

Borehole geophysical logging data are routinely acquired during exploration of coal deposits in Australia. These data are commonly used qualitatively to identify and correlate coal seams and geotechnically significant interburden rock units. Some quantitative analysis, such as using sonic logs for rock strength estimation is becoming increasingly widespread. This paper discusses results from a project aimed at expanding the quantitative approach to more detailed mineralogical and lithological analysis, which leads to improved geotechnical characterisation for mine planning and mining hazard reduction. A standard suite of wireline logs measuring density, natural gamma, sonic and neutron were analysed from three coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Thirty-nine samples from cored sections of the boreholes were analysed by X-ray diffraction, spectral gamma counts and hyperspectral scanning. Using a standard petrophysical approach to calculating porosity, shale and matrix components from a combination of density, natural gamma and neutron logs, a good correlation with observed mineralogy was demonstrated. However, unusual mineralogies such as heavy minerals or low-potassium clays may distort this analysis. Simultaneous evaluation of all available geophysical logs by modern data mining methods was able to show how these ambiguities may be solved.

The current trend in the UK towards the adoption of retreat longwall mining methods and the associated rapid development of the access drivages have exacerbated the environmental conditions experienced within these workings. There is a recognised need to improve the efficiency of the design and operation of mine ventilation systems in order to maintain an adequate environment and climate within these workings. Any improvement achieved in the quality, quantity and control of the delivered ventilation will assist in the provision of improved gas and dust dilution and climatic control. The paper presents an analysis of the psychrometric data recorded during the execution of a series of comprehensive climatic surveys conducted within two representative deep underground UK coal workings. The surveys were performed across two high production retreat longwall districts within UK Coal Ltd collieries. The surveys employed intrinsically safe psychrometric transducers and digital data-loggers to collect a continuous record of the mine climate over designated weekday production and weekend non-production periods. The transducers and data-logging units are capable of simultaneously measuring and digitally recording changes in the dry bulb temperature and the relative humidity at regular time intervals for extended periods of time.

New Zealand is an exposed part of a sub- continent that was detached from Australia when the Tasman Sea opened in the Late Cretaceous. The pre-separation rocks occur in three main belts. A western belt or terrane was part of Antarctica, was continuous with southern Australian rocks, and was moved eastwards in the Mid Devonian. A central belt of Hokonui and Caples rocks can be correlated broadly with the Gympie Terrane of eastern Queensland. It was an island arc, fore-arc basin and accretionary wedge system, and it was accreted to eastern Australasia in the Mid Triassic. The third belt consists of Torlesse rocks and was possibly emplaced over the Caples rocks by at least three pulses of strike-slip, in the Triassic, the Jurassic and the Cretaceous. The three episodes of strike-slip can be correlated with regional events in eastern Australia. Pre-Cainozoic New Zealand was an amalgam of terranes that had moved eastwards from south of Australia and southwards from east of Australia.

ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. The Ravenswood Batholith in the Charters Towers -Ravenswood area of north Queensland, was formed by three main episodes of granitoid emplacement between the Early Ordovician and the Early Permian. Granite to granodiorite plutons of the first phase of intrusions in the Early to Middle Ordovician, probably formed by partial melting of a thin continental crust as a result of the emplacement of mafic material derived from the mantle. Some of this mafic material subsequently intruded the Ordovician granitoids as gabbro to diorite complexes. The early granitoids were deformed and metamorphosed prior to emplacement of second phase granodiorite to tonalite plutons in the Late Silurian to Early Devonian. These later plutons have generally not been deformed or recrystallised. Geochemical and isotopic data suggest the Siluro-Devonian plutonism may have been generated by a partial melting of the tholeiitic material emplaced in the lower crust during the Ordovician. A third intrusive phase consists principally off Late Carboniferous to Early Permian gabbro-granite complexes, high level granite to granodiorite complexes, and rhyolitic plugs and diatremes near the batholith margin. Gold mineralisation in the batholith is associated with two major events: mesothermal vein formation in the Early Devonian and porphyry types in the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian.

Secondary steelmaking (or ladle metallurgy) has been developed as a post- steelmaking ladle treatment to produce steel of superior quality. Its rapid growth has resulted from quality improvements, productivity increase, operational flexibility and process route economics. Advances in secondary steelmaking are very impressive during the past decade, and many commercial systems have been developed for performing one or more of the following unit operations: degassing, atmosphere regulation, reheating, refining with synthetic slag, rinsing gas treatment, injection of solid materials and alloying. The metallurgical requirements imposed by the current competitive steel market include more precise analysis tolerances, minimum level of detrimental elements, improved cleanness, demanding service performance and better processability. In most cases, these requirements could only be realized by the application of appropriate secondary refining facilities. Continuing developments in simplicity of design, cost advantage, quick cycle time, improvements in peripheral services such as refractories, instrumentation and in-situ analysis, extensive exploration of new applications, and the use of computer, can be expected. An exciting future is predicted for the widespread adoption of secondary steelmaking to perform most of the major refining functions over a variety of steel quality. It will also become a vital link in the total steelmaking process for production of tonnage steel at the large integrated steelworks and the mini-steelmills.

Recent field experiments in the United Kingdom (Buchanan, 1979) have shown that the in-seam technique is capable of detecting a 1m fault in a 3m seam, at a range of 280m and with a resolution of ¦40m. Comparable tests in Australian collieries are proceeding. Although the practicality of an implementation of the technique on a routine basis remains to be demonstrated, the potential of the technique for the prediction of outbursts clearly warrants detailed examination. This potential will,depend, inter alia, on the level and scale of variations in elastic (and anelastic) properties of bodies of coal undergoing stresses associated with mining. Available data, mainly from studies of the seismic properties of gas saturated reservoir rocks, confirm the intuitive view that stress increases give rise to increases in seismic wave velocity and decreases in wave attenuation, markedly at low stresses (as pore spaces close with little resistance) but less so as stress increases. Such increases are of the same order as aniso- tropic effects, but should provide impedance contrast sufficient for detection by in-seam seismic methods. At higher stresses, cracks form within the rock mass. Results from research on earthquake prediction provide some clues to the behaviour of sedimentary rocks sub- jected to large stresses. The reduction of zinc from lead blast furnace slags using hydrogen was studied at 1300¦C as part of a laboratory investigation of zinc fuming. To perform the experiments, 300 g "spent slag" was melted in a crucible. Hydrogen was then injected into the slag through a lance and fresh blast furnace slag was added regularly in small quantities over a period of 40 minutes. Zinc added in the fresh slag was reduced and the zinc level of the bulk slag attained a steady state value of between 1 and 9% after about 10 minutes, depending on the gas injection rate. Because of the high reactivity of hydrogen, bulk supply of hydrogen to the slag was the rate limiting step at the flow rates used and it is believed that the gas-slag reactions in the system were at equilibrium. A partially/stabilized zirconia cell with a Ni/NiO reference electrode was immersed in the slags during the experiments and the steady/state oxygen potentials of the slags were measured. By using the experimental oxygen potential values and calculated values of the steady state concentrations of zinc in the offgas, the activity of ZnO in the slags was calculated from the Gibbs's free energy change for the reaction:

Over the last 15 years the silver/lead/zinc ore treated at Mount Isa became increasingly complex and lower grade. Metal recoveries dropped dramatically, causing a serious decline in profitability. The ætraditionalÆ response of increasing tonnage to reduce unit cost was unsuccessful, since the additional tonnage was even lower quality ore. A major technical and capital program in the 1990s restored metallurgical performance, but business return was still too low and ore quality continued to decline. In 1996 a new, holistic approach integrated the steps of geology, mining, concentrating, smelting, and refining. Previous assumptions about æfixedÆ and æmarginalÆ costs in mining and processing were shown to be wrong. Detailed analysis showed that some ore sources were reducing profit. This led to a fundamental redesign and downsizing of both Mount Isa and Hilton mines. The result was dramatic increases in head grades, metallurgical performance and plant stability without any capital expenditure. The business is now smaller, but more profitable.

Mount Isa Mines Limited has been mining copper ore for 50 years. In recent years, this production has been entirely by open stoping methods with cemented backfill, mostly in the large 1100 orebody.This has been the major ore source for 20 years, with smaller amounts coming from the 400, 500, 650 and 1900 orebodies. At present, the 1100 orebody is the only source, and this situation will continue until the deep 3000 and 3500 orebodies begin producing in late 1992/93. Production rates have increased to almost 6 Mt/yr, and are planned to rise to 7 Mt/yr by 1995/96. In the future, there will be a move towards variations of the open stoping system as production moves to more lensy zones of the southern 1100 orebody and to the deeper 3000 and 3500 orebodies. This paper describes current operations in the 1100 Orebody, with some indications of future directions.

The planned extraction of deeper copper ore at Isa Mine has necessitated a review of existing equipment and methods to contain costs and improve working conditions. Mining is in progress for a crushing-conveying system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 Orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of ore to the crushers and conveying of the crushed ore by cable belt conveyor to existing shaft loading facilities, a distance of about 2 km. To develop part of the conveyor drive a new machine will be used, the Robbins MM120 Mobile Miner, a joint development project between The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The Mobile Miner uses a rotating cutting wheel to excavate headings 3.7 m high and from 4.7 m to 7.5 m wide. To ventilate the deep crusher complexes and associated development at high virgin rock temperatures, a refrigeration plant will be built on surface to reticulate chilled water underground. Bulk cooling of air to the 3000/3500 Orebodies and the southern crushers will be combined with the reticulation of chilled service water to the lower workings of the mine.

The Pemali Open Pit Mine is situated in a small island called Bangka in Indonesia. It produces approximately 165,000 m3/year of tin ore with an average grade of 3.67 kg/m' of tin from a primary deposit. The deposit occurs at the rim of a granitoid intrusion within sedimentary beds. The rock formations, all extremely weathered, and the overlying alluvium, are exposed to a rainfall exceeding 3m/year. Serious slope stability problems are experienced at the mine, despite using overall pit slopes of 20¦-29¦, the latter resulting in a stripping ratio of 4:1. This paper outlines a computer based back analysis of a major slope failure involving some 250,000 m' of material which occurred on the west wall of the pit in February, 1984. The findings from the analysis, together with other information, are used to examine the stability of the east wall of the pit, where tension cracks developed later. The results indicate that the large influx of water was the most significant cause of such slope stability problems and a more intensified water management programme would be beneficial.

The hydro-chlorination of Fe2O3 and Fe304 has been investigated in the range 850-950¦C in order to elucidate the role of iron in the segregation process for nickeliferous laterites. The kinetics of Fe203 chlorination using 20% HC1 - 80% N2 gas mixtures is consistent with a single-stage structure control model, whereas Fe3O 4 exhibits a two-stage reaction mechanism. Oxygen potential measurements using a CSZ probe located above the bed and X-ray powder diffraction results confirm the proposed reaction scheme. When a serpentine nickeliferous laterite (1.03% Ni - 11.7% Fe) was chlorinated at 900¦C with a 20% HCl - 80% N2 gas mixture it was found that the iron oxide in the ore was extracted in a similar manner to the synthetic iron oxides. Also, it was found that the nickel extraction from the ore paralleled that of the iron and the tests indicated that for the major part of the extraction, the solid nickel species were in equilibrium with the gas phase. The recovery of nickel from laterite ores by the segregation process has been investigated by a number of workers and several extensive reviews of the literature associated with this field have been published (Iwasaki, 1972; Canterford, 1975; Wright, 1973).
