During early 2004, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) began an aggressive exploration and drilling program in the Chichester Range, targeting iron enrichment developed in the Nammuldi Member at the base of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation. The timely recognition by FMG of distinct zones of (hypogene) microplaty hematite (mplH) enrichment overprinted by extensive supergene mineralisation led to an early reappraisal of the geological history of the area and characterisation of the possible structural and stratigraphic controls on mineralisation. Regionally, the Chichester Range dips gently at less than 5¦ to the south, however, detailed mapping shows that this regional limb is overprinted by low amplitude, long wavelength, north/south to northeast/southwest trending folds. The locations of major structures in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, combined with spectral analysis of known mineralisation, allowed extrapolation and prioritisation of exploration target areas. The delineation under cover and understanding of these structures was enhanced by detailed airborne magnetic data. Recognition that supergene mineralisation was associated with a palaeotopography that continued significantly under cover to the south under sediments of the Fortescue River valley led to the discovery of extensive supergene mineralisation together with additional mplH mineralisation. A model for the landscape evolution and preservation of enriched Nammuldi Member was generated in order to help communicate both the complexities involved with targeting drill holes beneath cover and the potential limits to the lateral extents of mineralisation.

As the modification of the 2009 Mill OperatorsÆ Conference theme from æmilling through the boomÆ to æthe boom û experience gained and lessons learnedÆ exemplifies, comminution practitioners are facing a series of challenges in the dramatically changing mining environment. One of the main problems plant managers have been facing during the boom times has been the severe metallurgy skills shortage and high staff turnover, both factors that can cause difficulties in mill liner management. Many of todayÆs mill managers are now also more than ever faced with the need for cost-cutting in order to continue operating viably. Amongst other potential target outcomes such as maximised throughput, MillMapperÖ, a tool for mill condition monitoring and mill performance optimisation, can be utilised to address these issues. This paper demonstrates how MillMapperÆs quantifying decision making tools can serve to be in control of managing mill liner and production issues, and how it can form the basis for mill cost savings without the risks normally associated with conventional methods or the lack of using any condition monitoring methods. MillMapperÖ is currently being referred to at a rate of approximately 150 surveys and associated reports per annum at processing plants in Australasia, South America and Africa. Examples throughout the paper provide insight into how the presented sample set of users have extracted benefits that could have otherwise not been safely or at all achieved.

The performance of a hydrocyclone treating fine coal has been examined over a wide range of feed and operating conditions.The results were expressed in terms of partition curves from which the water split to the oversize flowstream,the corrected separation size and reduced partition curves were determined-.The following conclusions were obtained. (a) The water split to the oversize flowstream was found to be dependent upon the vortex finder and spigot diameters of the cyclone and the flowrate and solids content of the feed slurry. (b) The corrected separation size was dependent on the solids content of the feed,and the vortex finder and spigot diameters.The hydraulic pressure (or flowrate) of the feed slurry did not have a significant effect.This phenomenon could be explained in terms of crowding of the particles at the Spigot.

Injection of gases into slag-melt mixtures produces various zones as a result of bubble formation and disintegration within the melt. The extent of these zones depends on the type of reactor used. When compared with ferrous processes, non ferrous processes are character- ised by large bubbles formed adjacent to the tuyeres, low flowrates and shallow tuyere sub- mergence. These features can result in a greater proportion of reaction occurring above the bath, more refractory wear and tuyere blockage with more splashing. The large bubble zone adjacent to the tuyeres has been investigated using the tech- niques of physical modelling, mathematical modelling and plant trials. Large bubble form- ation in physical models was recorded using a high speed camera and a rapid response pressure transducer coupled to an oscilloscope and data recorder. It was found that the bubble volume (Vb) could be correlated at low flowrates using the single bubble model Vb = 1.378 Q6/5 g-3/5 Deviations from this correlation occurred with increasing gas jet momentum. Plant trials were carried out on a copper converter at Mount Isa Mines during five different charges. Pressure measurements were made through the tuyeres during the slag blow and commencement of the copper blow. The power spectrum density showed that the dominant pulse amplitude occurred at a frequency of approximately 3 pulses/sec. Plant data from this and other converters were correlated using the same relationship as for physical modelling. De- viations occurred due to the state of the re- fractory, bath composition or bath circulation effects.

"In some underground mines it has been observed that the primary focus during feasibility studies is to determine the best way to mine the defined orebody. Some studies have been conducted without sufficient consideration of the ventilation and cooling requirements or the risk from exposure to associated airborne pollutants caused by the mining operations.Following the hierarchy of control to manage risk, numerous problems of the ventilation systems in some underground mines could have been avoided if sufficient consideration was given to the ventilation requirements to manage heat, airborne pollutants and leakage during the feasibility study phase. If the constraints and hazards were well defined and understood at the time of the study, efforts could have been made to eliminate or substitute the hazards to decrease the risk. Some of these problems include but are not limited to: primary fan locations heat loads diesel exhaust ventilation design based on the production requirement fire/emergency response strategies.This paper highlights areas in the ventilation discipline that are sometimes overlooked during feasibility studies. It will also highlight the importance of the Ventilation Specialist during these studies. Experience and knowledge of best ventilation practices must be applied in feasibility studies.As a result of adequate consideration to all ventilation aspects in the feasibility study phase, risks will become lower in terms of health, safety, production loss and equipment downtime caused by heat.CITATION:Kok, J, 2014. At Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGMÆs) Fimiston Operations, located on the periphery of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia, roughly 7.5 million tonnes of rock are broken each month for the extraction of gold. With the close proximity of neighbours to the mining operations in the Chaffers Cut Back, special blasting techniques and tools were employed by KCGM to manage the blast induced vibrations and noise in this area. The i-konTM initiation system coupled with OricaÆs complementary modelling and analysis tools offered the complete blast management package. With these tools KCGM management and Orica Mining Services commenced an investigation into the benefits of electronic initiation. Prior to the commencement of electronic blasting, initial modelling was conducted to examine the vibration time waveforms and their frequency content, as these were expected to have an impact on vibration interaction with structures such as large buildings and urban dwellings. This work looked at results measured for a previous conventionally (pyrotechnic) initiated blast in the area and compared it to the results obtained when the blast was modelled with electronic initiation and faster timings. The predicted peak particle velocity (PPV) and structural vibration factor (SVF) were calculated. From the results it was concluded that the investigation into using i-konTM electronic initiation system and SHOTPlus«-i blast design software had some real potential to improve blast vibration management on the cut back. The use of the electronic initiation system and complementary software allows intricate timing designs to be accurately placed into blasts. The system has a number of working modes that allow either the precise design timings to be logged automatically into each detonator or to be manually logged where a variation from the design exists. Where such variations from the design occur, the electronic system permits the actual timings used to be uploaded back into the design file. This allows both design and real actual timings to be stored for future analysis or reference.

Back Creek is a tributary of the Condamine River. It flows in a northerly direction across the existing Commodore coal reserves. The diversion of Back Creek was proposed to minimise sterilisation of the reserves. The approval process required a Waterworks Licence application, under the Water Resources Act 1989 (Qld), for the construction of a stream diversion channel and floodway. The diversion was designed using the æreference reachÆ approach, which mimicked existing properties of Back Creek. The following design standards were developed for the diversion: the diversion corridor width was 500 m; the diversion geometry was specified for both the low-flow channel, and the floodplain; material properties were specified for both the low-flow channel lining and the diversion bund; compaction standards for both the low-flow channel and floodplain were set; and the diversion rehabilitation included a riparian corridor and pasture land with clumps of native trees and shrubs. The following performance criteria were developed for the diversion: velocity regimes were replicated for the design events considered, in an attempt to avoid increasing the diversion flow velocities in comparison with the existing creek flow velocities; sediment transport calculations indicated that no significant change in sediment transport was expected within the diversion; overburden settlement estimates for the spoil placed in the corridor were summarised, and will be monitored throughout the construction process; geotechnical stability of the proposed Eastern Pit Buttress and the diversion bund configurations was confirmed; and groundwater impacts were assessed. Construction techniques, monitoring and further investigations are also discussed in this paper.

Fission track thermochronology is a well established method for reconstructing the thermal histories of rocks with particularly important applications in tectonic studies, detecting low-grade thermal events, sedimentary basin analysis and resource exploration. These applications take advantage of the limited stability of fission tracks, especially in apatite, when exposed to the temperatures found in the upper 3-4 km of the crust. Apparent fission track ages in apatites can define an invisible 'stratigraphy' in otherwise homogeneous rock masses that can give valuable information on thermal, tectonic and erosional events. Quantitative modelling of the thermal annealing of tracks in apatite shows that distinctive profiles of apparent fission track age can be related to a number of simple thermal history styles. The main types of profile observed tend to be either an essentially linear decrease of apparent age with increasing depth, which relates to continuous uplift and denudation, or a concave-upwards profile produced by partial annealing in environments of tectonic stability or burial. More complex thermal histories produce compound profiles which are essentially just combinations of these two elements. Track length information allows the apparent age profiles to be interpreted in much greater detail. Examples of the major profile types have now been identified in various geological environments and can be analysed to give information about, for example, uplift and denudation rates, the timing of uplift or low-grade thermal events and maximum palaeotemperatures experienced during burial.

The products from beneficiation present themselves at opposite ends of the spectrum, and yet numerous synergies exist in the preparation of coking coal and hematite iron ore products for their common export markets. Returning to the coal side of the business with Anglo Coal following a five-year sojourn in WA with Hamersley Iron, has provided the opportunity for comparing and contrasting some of the key synergies of the supply chains of both bulk commodities.Comparisons include consideration of things like: resource evaluation (especially quality aspects), run-of-mine handling and preparation, beneficiation, product handling and transportation, quality assurance and customer awareness, value-in-use and impacts on iron and steelmaking, and supply chain environmental aspects.Inherent within these are several other notable contrasts including: æseamsÆ and æorebodiesÆ, rocks and minerals, rejects and tailings, oxidation and weathering, suppliers and users, and marketing and purchasing, to name but a few.This paper covers some of the more interesting of these synergies and raises some potential opportunities for sharing knowledge and innovation between the two areas of activity in the future.

A belt of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and occurrences extends for over 150 km along the southern margin of the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the eastern Alaska Range. The VMS bodies occur mainly in the Jarvis Creek Glacier subterrane (JCGS), one of the highest structural/ stratigraphic levels of the Yukon-Tanana terrane. The JCGS consists of a VMS--bearing metavolcanic rock member and a metasedimentary rock member. The VMS deposits and enclosing rocks exhibit two periods of regional metamorphism.From northwest to southeast, the major VMS districts are the Bonnifield, Hayes Glacier, McGinnis Glacier, and Delta districts. The Bonnifield, Hayes and McGinnis Glacier district sulfide bodies consist of pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, with or without arsenopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The larger, 800 km Delta district deposits and occurrences contain variable amounts of pyrite and pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of primarily chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, and arsenopyrite.The sulfide accumulations are interpreted as Kuroko-like deposits that formed along the submarine volcanic part of a Devonian, continental-margin igneous arc. U-Pb isotopic data from zircons from the metavolcanic rocks indicate an age of about 370 Ma (Devonian). 207Pb/204Pb ratios for sulfides from the districts are similar and indicate lead was in part derived from first cycle sediments eroded largely from Precambrian crystalline rocks. 207Pb/204Pb ratios from feldspars in Devonian metavolcanic rocks are similar to those in sulfides, and indicate incorporation of radiogenic Precambrian lead into the Devonian magmas. A Precambrian crystalline source for quartz in metasedimentary rocks is indicated by 2.3 Ga old zircons. Common-lead isotope studies of igneous phenocrysts in metaigneous rocks and sulfides in volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits indicate a unique isotopic signature. The data permit an exotic origin of the Yukon-Tanana terrane with respect to North America.

Hematite ore has been mined in the Southern Middleback Ranges as blast furnace feed for the steelworks at Whyalla, by what was then BHP, since 1991. With the floating of BHP Integrated Steel as OneSteel in 2001 and the subsequent loss of key mining personnel, breakdowns in grade control methods and procedures occurred. These were compounded by changes in orebody characteristics and grade distribution leading to poor reserve recovery and poor grade control, both which resulted in loss of control of ore specification and severe deviation from the mining schedule. As a result, a total review of grade control, mining method and scheduling procedures was undertaken as well as a review of contractor quality assurance. It was found that sampling methods were poor and unrepresentative, grade control blocking processes were outdated and did not reflect the geology of the deposit, the ore mining method was outdated and did not respect the geometry of the orebody, reconciliation methods were being completed globally and were not reflective of individual areas of the deposit, and that deviations from the mine plan were occurring due to access to high-grade areas outside the schedule in order to bring stockpiles back on grade. Based on these findings, updated sample splitter systems were fitted to drill hole rigs, double bench sampling was implemented (2 + 4 m samples as opposed to 1 + 8 m sample) and a three-dimensional cellular grade control system introduced to better reflect the geology and orientation of the deposit. At the same time ore mining was changed from front end loaders mining on 8 m benches to excavator mining on three lifts on 8 m benches; this aided selectivity and respected the geometry of the orebodies aiding cleaner recovery. Reconciliation is now completed on a blast-by-blast basis, which allows for quick and easy identification of poorly performing areas of the resource model that can then be incorporated back into resource model updates. Regular daily and weekly meetings are also held with emphasis on the mining schedule to ensure no deviation from the schedule in the long term. These improvements have resulted in a lift in reserve recovery both globally and locally associated at the same time with improvement in grade.

Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1. Osborne Mine commenced hydraulic filling of three stopes in April 1999. Two of these stopes experienced barricade failures in July 1999 and January 2000. As a result, a review of hydraulic filling was commissioned in April 2000. The design of a trial of revised specifications and practices is in the final stages, prior to the trial commencing in mid-2002.
