Sintering is the most economic and widely used agglomeration process to prepare iron ore fines for blast furnace use. Due to the depleting reserves of traditional high-grade iron ore, there have been considerable changes in iron ore resources available throughout the world, especially in steel mills in East Asia. Corresponding to the changes in the availability of iron ore resources, the amount of impurities in iron ore has been slowly increasing. Some of these impurities have been found to have deleterious impacts on sinter quality and sintering performance. In the meantime, an increasing number of large blast furnaces with inner volumes of more than 5000 m3 have been built that require more sinter and are often more demanding in terms of the quality requirements of the ferrous materials. Finally, sinter plants are facing increasing pressure due to more stringent regulations regarding their environmental impact. By 1996 ground control-related problems at Brunswick Mine had raised serious concerns regarding the safe and economical extraction of large portions of the reserves. These difficulties were mainly caused by high stress levels in pillars, instabilities resulting from wide spans supported by ageing support elements, and chronic difficulties supplying rock fill from the surface quarry to the underground workings, which resulted in many large voids remaining open for long periods of time. Significant changes have been implemented at the site since 1996, amongst which were a change of mining method, the introduction of paste backfill, the establishment of stress management measures, and the introduction of shotcrete on a large-scale. This paper focuses on the regional ground conditions associated with both the previously used primary-secondary mining method and the newly implemented pyramidal pillarless technique, as well as on some of the stress management measures implemented at the mine.

Expansion of central production facilities at the Kutubu Petroleum Development Project in Papua New Guinea (PNG) required excavation of a steep hillside overlooking operating crude oil processing, storage and pumping facilities. Drilling and blasting were used to remove a large volume of rock which varied from hard limestone to soft sandstone, with zones of soft clay and many underground caverns. Similar ground conditions had made it very difficult to predict and control blast-ing results during previous excavation in this area.Special conditions of the project included restrictions on ground vibration levels at a high pressure oil pipeline and pump station within 100m of the blasting area, and a prohibition on any flyrock. As work progressed, some blasting was necessary with 20m of installations being constructed on the levelled project site. Thus blast design, drilling and charging were carefully controlled to avoid any incidents which could interfere with oil production or progress of the construction project.

Db are the auriferous lodes and correspond with those lodes, also whose auriferous characters are not result of secondary impregnations.

Since early 1971 Western Titanium N.L. has been operating an ilmenite upgrading plant on a commercial basis at Capel, Western Australia. In their process ilmenite is pre- oxidized, then reduced in a rotary kiln to a mixture of metallic iron and titanium oxides. The iron is leached out by accelerated rusting in aerated water, leaving a product with titanium content, expressed as Ti02, of about 92%. Samples from different stages of the up- grading process, representing operations over the last two years, have been studied in detail by X-ray diffraction methods, and the sequences of phases and reactions occurring have been determined. Quantitative X-ray studies showed the ilmenite feed materials to consist of a mixture of ilmenite and pseudo- rutile. Pre-oxidation of the ilmenite at =1000¦C leads to the formation of rutile plus a Fe2TiO5-FeTi205-Mn2TiO5 solid solution. The final reduction product consisted of a mixture of metallic iron, reduced rutile and a FeTi05-MnTi205-Ti305 solid solution. The relative amounts of these reduction products were very sensitive to the initial concentra- tions of the minor constituents manganese and magnesium. The effects of variation of ilmenite feed rate, reducing atmosphere,- reduction temperature and controlled addition of magnesium were also studied.

The world-class iron ore mines at Mt Whaleback, Torn Price and Paraburdoo located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia must mine the Mt McRae Shale to obtain high grade ore from the Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. The Mt McRae Shale contains a black pyritic shale lithology that reacts with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. This paper provides an overview of the problems associated with mining this reactive rock type as well as the development of a comprehensive procedure to safely and efficiently blast, excavate and dispose of this material. The strategy used to develop the procedure involved raising the awareness of relevant site personnel to the risks associated in mining the Black Pyritic Mt McRae Shale, obtaining the commitment of these personnel that a detailed procedure was required and that any procedure developed must be followed, otherwise the potential risks such as premature detonation were high. It was also necessary that an on-going training program be implemented so that all relevant new employees would be educated as to the reasons for adhering to the Black Pyritic Shale Procedure.

In 1990, Alcoa of Australia Limited was elected to the Global 500 Roll of Honour of the United Nations Environment Program for the environmental management and rehabilitation of the bauxite mines in Western Australia. This award placed Alcoa in the international best practice category. The story of constant improvement spans more than 20 years from a 'trial and error' start to a strategically focussed and research driven program today. The main driving force has come from within the company, against a set of strong corporate values and a well publicised Vision based on 'excellence through quality'. Along the way public opinion, action group protests, increased legislative controls together with the professional competence of internal and external environmental resources have all played a part in arriving at the level of current environmental management and mine rehabilitation performance. There were numerous lessons learned here during the evolution and maintenance of best practice. These included: I . To work diligently in obtaining a vision or strategic intent on mine site rehabilitation and environmental management - don't be easily dissuaded.

The South Island of New Zealand comprises a collage of distinct tectonostratigraphic terranes. Some tectonic models predict that these terranes formed on or near the margin of Gondwanaland. However, geologic evidence suggests that some of these terranes may be exotic. Over 400 samples from 30 sites were collected from the Brookstreet terrane within the Takitimu Mountains. The section includes the early Permian Takitimu Group and the late Permian White Hill Intrusive Suite. Over 80% of the rocks show a partial or complete regnetization in the present field due to recent acquistion of VRM. Although some remagnetization of the Takitimu Group occurred during the emplacement of the White Hill Intrusives, both early and late Permian direction have been isolated. These directions indicate a mid-latitude origin for the Brookstreet terrane, and suggest a strong clockwise rotation between early and late Permian time. A published paleomagnetic result from the younger, but related, Murihiku terrane suggests that the Brookstreet terrane was sutured to the margin of Gondwanaland by the late Triassic, or that the Brookstreet and Murihiku are two distinct terranes.

The Wiluna mining operations are centred near the township of Wiluna 750 kilometres north-east of Perth and 600 kilometres east of Geraldton.The Wiluna gold mines produced over two million ounces of gold, predominantly by roasting the refractory sulphide ores, before closing in 1947. In the period 1984 to 1992, 668 000 ounces of gold has been produced from free milling oxide ores and the retreatment of tailing. A plant capable of treating the refractory sulphide ores using the bacterial oxidation, Biox technique was commissioned in March, 1993.The Wiluna lode deposits are hosted by a sequence of very low grade metamorphosed mafic flows at the northern end of the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt. A strike slip fault system provided conduits for fluid migration; ore deposition occurred at favourable sites along the faults. Satellite mines at Gourdis and Wiluna South provide laterite and lode style oxide ores.The different styles of deposit and ore types at the Wiluna mining operations require a flexible approach to resource estimation and grade control practices.

We are currently witnessing large fluctuations in the relative price of ironmaking raw materials brought on by changes in the dynamics of supply and demand, market conditions, environmental regulations and technical factors affecting the iron and steelmaking process. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that give them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions and in setting price differentials for differing quality.This paper describes the use of the Marx value-in-use model to quantify the downstream value of lump iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering and pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples are given for the calculation of a lump premium.CITATION:Honeyands, T and Jelenich, L, 2015. I've talked a number of times in the past year or so to audiences like today's about culture -about thinking of it, understanding it, respecting it. So, rather than talk just yet about your laws for mining on Aboriginal land and the successes some of us and some of you have been able to achieve, I'd like to first of all talk about cul- ture as I understand it. Anyone who proposes any kind of development on Aborigi- nal land needs to have some basic understanding of what we, the traditional owners of that land, are about. Without that under- standing, you will find difficulty in coming to terms with us. Many people have experienced this difficulty and, unless we can do something about it together, many more will continue to find it.

As the oxide reserves in an oxide/sulphide deposit are exhausted transition to the treatment of sulphides should be investigated in detail and well before processing the sulphide ore commences. The investigation should be broad based to consider all treatment options and not restricted entirely by the existing process plant treatment method. These options may include cyanidation, flotation, roasting, bacterial leaching or gravity treatment and are chosen on the basis of various testwork responses. Experiences in laboratory testing of sulphides and treatment of sulphides at various operations are discussed. This includes the treatment of copper/gold sulphides, CIP treatment of sulphides and treatment of marcasite ore in a conventional CIP circuit.

Obtaining correct assays for gold determinations relies on the correct methods being chosen and the assayer being made aware of the mineralogy of the sample and its general origin. Usually when a geologist or metallurgist obtains "incorrect" gold assays the problem can be traced to poor communication between the geologist or metallurgist and the assayer.

Sedimentary rock is a lithology that is commonly encountered in mining practices. Their properties, especially the resistance against weathering, are often of critical importance to long-term engineering stability due to their ubiquitous existence on the earth’s crust. The weathering of rocks is a complex process that involves physical degradation, chemical and biological erosions. In this study, the impact of physical weathering on four common sedimentary rocks, namely sandstone, siltstone, limestone and shale, are simulated in the laboratoryoratory environment taking into consideration the impact of preservation condition, temperature and time. In order to optimise the design of the experiment, Taguchi’s design of experiment method is implemented based on the L16 orthogonal array and selected simulation conditions. The weight and dimension variation, fracture intensity, slake durability, and uniaxial strengths of specimens are then tested to quantify the impact of weathering under various conditions. The results indicate that weathering significantly influences the strength of shale, siltstone and limestone but not sandstone. The impact of weathering on dimension variation is insignificant. For soft rocks, most physical weathering took place after second cycle of simulation, resulting in strength reduction up to 100 per cent (disintegration) but generally in a range from 28 per cent to 32 per cent. Additionally, time is the most important factor contributing to the physical weathering of weak rocks, followed by residual, preservation conditions and temperature. Last but not least, some shales, depending on the content of clay minerals, tend to develop significant fracturing or even disintegrate under the influence of weathering.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the Short Wave Infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a Quartz- Sericite-Pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

Approval to operate Longwall No. 7 at Appin Colliery in 1979 was granted pursuant not only to the usual statutory provisions, but also that an adequate means of drainage of methane gas be incorporated. A methane drainage plant was subsequently designed and constructed some two km from the pit top at the site of the Colliery main upcast and down cast shafts. Modern plants of this nature are completely automated using programmable controllers and computers to provide control and management reporting functions. Complex mechanical systems are installed to extract the gas and in handling and storage processes. Gas utilisation plants exist which can generate power from methane. These plants are further enhanced by harnessing waste heat produced in the generation process. The installation, automation control and monitoring of these plants incorporates many facets of engineering from high voltage power supply and computer technology to complex gas handling procedures used in gas compression storage.and generation of electric power.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11 km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River in the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (eg Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the æTechnical FeasibilityÆ phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralisation/ precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru SA, and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the AMD could be sufficiently treated to be potentially used to supplement the drinking water supply of Lima, and for agricultural (eg irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for implementation of the full-scale treatment facility at the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gippsland Mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695 kg of gold, which at 1980 prices represents a value significantly in excess of $200 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subsequent occupants of the lease produced an additional 160 kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. When the mines closed, Walhalla gradually reduced from a bustling developed town to the present attractive mountain village so favoured by tuurriSts. The success of any industry depends on the planned integration of the policies and resources of the key components of the Australian economic and political structure - government, industry management, education, research, and the human resources of the industry. The Australian Mineral Industry, like Australia itself, has grown and developed at a rate not foreseen by many of our founding fathers and early industry leaders. Hence, now, as we approach the 21st Century, we need to re-think our approach to the significant new problems that are beginning to face both government and the Mineral Industry. Government initiatives, government information and support services, industry re-structuring, and research and development support, need to be carefully re-evaluated, re-diredted,. and strengthened, so that government, the community, and the Mineral Industry produce and receive the optimum education and research strategies and services. The support of academics and researchers, the development of facilities, and the design of new Courses for the future successful and beneficial exploitation of minerals need particular consideration.
