RISKGATE, an Australian Coal Association Research Program-funded (ACARP) initiative, has been designed to assist the Australian coal mining industry in improving minimum standards for safety performance, efficiency, operating practice and training. The online system is innovative in that it is built upon a foundation of industry expert knowledge gathered through action research workshops, which is further supported by a broad array of industry, academic and technical resources. In operation, RISKGATE offers a continuum for knowledge transfer and communication of current practice in risk identification, assessment and management in the coal mining industry. The primary mission of RISKGATE is to focus industry attention on prioritising control management as a way to achieve acceptable risk.A Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module has recently been added to the RISKGATE suite. The key risk, or initiating event, associated with coalmine tailings dams is catastrophic failure of the dam, leading to the release of tailings and water. This can occur due to geotechnical instability of the dam itself or of its foundation, overtopping and erosion of the dam, and piping failure of the dam itself or of its foundation. Coalmine tailings dams are also prone to seepage into the foundation and through the dam, particularly during operation when large volumes of water are discharged with the tailings. The most significant risk associated with seepage is the release of potentially contaminated water to the environment. Contamination can take the form of elevated salinity, acidity and dissolved metals. Run-off from coalmine tailings can cause erosion and can also potentially contain contaminants. Desiccation of the tailings surface can result in dust generation and dispersion.The paper presents the background and context of the RISKGATE project, the need for the addition of the RISKGATE Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module, and a description of the developed module, including the five initiating events considered, their causes and associated preventive controls, and their consequences and associated mitigating controls. WMC Limited, owner/operator of Olympic Dam, the worldÆs largest underground uranium mine and the fourth largest underground copper mine has now completed an expansion that has been classed as a benchmark in the mining industry. To achieve a production increase from 3.4 to 9.25 Mtpa from an underground mining operation in two years was a major challenge, it was essential to review the overall materials handling system from æthe face to the stockpileÆ. The challenge was two-fold:How to deliver 30 000 tonne of ore per day to the processing plant, from a single underground mine? To provide the processing plant with a consistent metallurgical feed. This paper traces the transformation from the old to the new materials handling system at Olympic Dam.

The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. During the response to the Moura No 4 disaster, use was made of the New South Wales Mines Rescue Service’s ‘Mineshield’ inertisation equipment. The equipment had to be transported from Newcastle, approximately 1400 kms, and the liquid nitrogen a similar distance. The time taken, and therefore availability of the liquid nitrogen, became a significant problem. Operational issues were also experienced during use. Typically the liquid nitrogen is converted to a gas (vaporised) before being injected into the mine. However, as the propane gas tanker used for the vapourising unit was delayed, an attempt was made to inject the liquid nitrogen directly down uncased boreholes. This proved unsuccessful.Following the Moura No 4 disaster and the Moura No 2 disaster, recommendations were made relating to having inertisation capacity for the Queensland coal mining industry. Today the Queensland industry has multiple options available for inertisation, including the high-volume GAG and smaller volume units such as boilers and membrane separation units. Although it ultimately aided re-entry into Moura No 4, most likely due to the issues associated with supply to Central Queensland, liquid nitrogen has not found favour within the Queensland industry as an inertisation tool.Coregas has commissioned an air separation plant in Mackay, improving the availability of liquid nitrogen to Central Queensland. Based on the availability of this nitrogen, recent sealing operations at Kestrel have trialled using liquid nitrogen and associated vapourising units. The Certificate in Mining Studies program at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada is a collaborative initiative between mining schools and industry to provide accessible, cost-effective, accredited continuing education and training, designed to address the future needs of the global mining community. Content is provided by industry specialists and delivered through an integration of online learning, short courses and interactive webcasts. Accreditation is provided by a network of mining schools. In 2011, the program will deliver close to 100 short courses and interactive webcasts and provide 24/7 access to more than 130 online courses in six mining streams, to participants from as far afield as Tanzania, Argentina and Mongolia. The program is proving adaptable to corporate and mine site engineer-in-training and graduate-development programs, as well as providing accessible professional development opportunities for individuals. It also provides opportunities for cross-training from other disciplines and integration with mining school curricula.

The Clem Jones Tunnel (formally known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel), a A$2.88 billion road tunnel project in Brisbane, Queensland, was successfully completed almost seven months ahead of schedule. The project included two parallel 4.7 km long road tunnels, 740 m of intermediate roadway access ramps and two auxiliary ventilation tunnels. The tunnels incorporate intelligent tunnel systems, best practice fire and life safety standards and typical civil tunnel elements.Over the duration of the project the Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and AECOM (formally Maunsell) design joint venture (MPB) were Lead Designers to the Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture (LBBJV). Construction of the toll road commenced in September 2006 and was completed in March 2010, with the tunnel opening then. Contributing to the success of this project was the continued support the lead designers gave throughout the construction period.This paper will focus on some of the structural elements that contributed to the success of the project – in particular the cable tunnel structure, a small precast, culvert shaped element under the pavement of the mainline tunnel, and the fit-out of the Gibbon Street shaft which were designed to be constructed in a combination of precast and in situ concrete.The cable tunnel was incorporated early in the design phase and runs the length of much of the tunnel. This paper will outline the challenges faced by the designers with implementing this system which provided significant construction advantages, among which were being able to install a separate ventilation duct during construction and to start fitting out the mechanical and electrical conduits and drainage system while tunnelling was still underway.The Gibbon Street shaft had a length and width of 20 m by 40 m and an overall depth of 38 m. A 20 m high structure of precast and in situ concrete was constructed in the base to accommodate mechanical and electrical equipment and provide a take-off access for the southern ventilation tunnel. The construction purpose for this structure was to provide a junction between the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and the roadheader-style tunnels, a staging platform for commencing the roadheader tunnelling, and a platform where the TBMs could be dismantled and removed.The design was assessed and reviewed many times throughout the construction process to address the needs of each of these stages. Innovative use of precast concrete was used to minimise construction time.Additionally, the designers provided support to the construction team from the time of design completion through to the tunnel opening. This meant that the changes to the design and adjustment of construction loadings could also be assessed. The fi nal outcome resulted in an efficient construction sequence and a project that has provided an excellent outcome for the client, stakeholders and community.

The Kingsgate molybdenite pipes are considered on petrochemical data and field occurrence to be, possibly, epi-magmatic plutonic offshoots grading into hydrothermal bodies. There is reason to believe that the ore is derived from a highly acid granite of type similar to that of the tin bearing areas of northern New England. The mineralogy, microtextures and paragenesis of the ore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Kingsgate Mining Field is situated in steep, heavily timbered terrain 18 miles E.N.E. of Glen Innes and 430 miles north of Sydney. Bismuth and molybdenum ores were discovered at Kingsgate (Yarrow Creek) in 1877. Subsequently some 50 pipes were developed yielding tonnages which at the peak of operations, 1905 to 1920, rivalled production from the rich deposits of northern Queensland.Attempts to revive the field have been made periodically and small parcels of ore have been forthcoming.' During World War II demand for piezioelectric quartz again focussed attention on Kingsgate but twinning and other imperfections of the quartz prevented all but a minor exploitation of the otherwise noteworthy crystals of this locality.There is reason to believe that the ore at Kingsgate is not exhausted through exploration and mining costs would probably be high due to the capricious nature of the pipes and to the irregular distribution of rich ore shoots within them.

New detailed mapping, micropalaeont- ology and isotopic dating have been successful in revising the stratigraphy of Woodlark Island. All Middle to Late Miocene intrusives and volcanic rocks have been assigned to the Okiduse Volcanics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the Tabukui beds and Wonai Hill beds (N9, late Early Miocene to earliest Middle Miocene) are a single unit. Similarly, the Nasai and Suloga Limestones are confirmed as a single stratigraphic unit as they yield similar foraminiferal ages (upper Te, Early Miocene), and both occur in the same stratigraphic position unconformably overlying basement Loluai Volcanics. Radiocarbon dating suggests a latest Pleistocene age for the upper Kiriwina Formation. Extensive Quaternary cover and low relief prevents detailed structural airphoto interpretation. In general, the structure is simple with all units on Woodlark dipping to the northwest a_4 exhibiting prominent local block faulting.

Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. Mt Waruwari, host to the Porgera underground gold mine in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), is a prominent ridge of sediments and dioritic intrusives rising approximately 600m above the surrounding valley floor. Consequently, mining occurs in a low stress environment where structural and material considerations are foremost in the design of ground support and reinforcement. Three major rock types are encountered in the underground mine. These are locally referred to as "black sediments" (slightly indurated mudstones and clayey siltstones), "altered sediments" (derived from black sediments by thermal metamorphism), and "intrusives" of dioritic composition. The rocks are moderately to highly fractured, the black sediments being generally weak and occasionally sheared while the altered sediments and intrusives are quite strong but often brittle. Mining takes place from a series of stopes extracted by either slot and mass blast or a modified vertical crater retreat method (VCR), which are backfilled with a cemented rock fill. Ground support and reinforcement has been relatively conserv- ative to date and generally relies on pattern reinforcement of all development with cement grouted "rebar" bolts and mesh, extending to pattern cable bolting with occasional mesh in stope backs. In addition there has been considerable reinforcement of stope hangingwalls in some cases. A programme of broad scale structural mapping, monitoring with extensometers, material property testing, and stress analysis has been devised to allow optimum design of ground support and reinforcement in the future. Considerable work remains to ,omplete this task.

A pyrite flotation concentrate assaying 0·065 oz/ton gold was investigated to determine the mode of occurrence of the gold. Ftom cyanidation and acid leaching experiments it was concluded that O· 02-0· 03 oz/ton goldwas in solid solution in pyrite and the balance of the gold was finely dispersed as grains throughout the pyrite.Autoradiography and electron-probe examination of possible areas in briquetted concentrate did not detect any grains of gold. Neutron irradiation and gamma spectrometry confirmed on 100 mg samples the fire assays obtained on 1 assay ton samples.Oxidation to hematite and reduction to magnetite at 600°C made practically the whole of the gold extractable by cyanide. This technique could be of major significance for gold ores which contain a substantial amount of "refractory" gold.

Cave propagation is a complex process due to interacting variables such as mine geometry, rock mass heterogeneity and complex structural networks and stress fields. The Ernest Henry sublevel cave (SLC) is directly below an open pit, which provided an opportunity to observe and measure rock mass failure as the cave initiated and propagated through the pit wall. This paper describes interaction between the open pit and SLC as well as rock mass failure mechanisms observed from the start of the SLC to surface breakthrough.Cave propagation and slope failure mechanisms were found to be governed by intermediate structures, while the cave shape was largely controlled by cave-scale faults. The open pit, production-level geometry and production draw strategy were also important factors for cave and subsidence growth. Cave propagation was episodic and asymmetric in shape due to the orientation and relative position of geological structures, combined with the effects of the increasing SLC geometry and drawdown from the underlying production levels. The precursors and failure mechanism of a 2.5 Mt wall collapse are also reviewed in detail.Cave growth was simulated using a 3D, non-linear, discontinuum finite element model coupled with Newtonian Cellular Automata. Formation of either sodium jarosite or lead jarosite from concentrated chloride solutions containing small concentrations of sulphate has been demonstrated. Sodium jarosite is precipitated at 95-100°C from FeC13-FeCI2-NaCI-PbCI2 solutions to which was added Na2SO4 or Li2SO4 in amounts greater than 0.05 M. In the absence of alkali metal ions capable of forming jarosites, lead jarosite was precipitated from either FeCI3-PbCI2 or FeCI3-FeCI2-LiCI-PbCI2 solutions to which had been added small amounts of sulphate. Many of the factors affecting jarosite precipitation from chloride solution have been elucidated, and the most critical were sulphate concentration and initial pH. Concentrations of HCI in excess of O. I M essentially suppressed the production of jarosite in chloride media. Alkali jarosite, precipitated in the presence of dissolved lead, incorporates a small amount of this metal into the alkali jarosite lattice. Small but significant amounts of copper can also be incorporated into alkali jarosite and the amount is further increased in the presence of lead. Other divalent base metals such as Zn, Cd or Ni are not significantly precipitated. Sulphate control in either FeCI3 or FeCl3-NaCI leaching systems could likely be maintained by jarosite precipitation provided that the acid concentration of the solution was low.

It is widely accepted that mineral deposits are decreasing in metal grades. To remain profitable and meet market demand, mining companies are expanding their operations by increasing the tonnage treated. These expansions may include new concentrators with higher nameplate tonnages or upgrading the capacity of existing ‘brownfield’ operations. In many cases, the brownfield upgrade route is preferred as it is less capital intensive; however, brownfield upgrades are never straightforward and present many metallurgical and engineering challenges.For example, to increase feed throughput at a brownfield site, there will be a requirement to modify the mine development plan. This may result in the ore mineralogy varying beyond the current feed fluctuation range. To accommodate these ore variations, a combination of mineralogical analysis and small scale testwork can be used to develop a new process flow sheet to achieve the product recovery/concentrate grade requirements. In general, however, flow sheet development does not usually consider site specific layout constraints and equipment requirements. At sites where future expansions were never considered, taking this silo approach could lead to project delays and compromise the circuit design.Engaging an experienced technology partner ensures the nominated project team is involved throughout all stages and aspects of a given brownfield upgrade – from conceptual flow sheet development, through to detailed engineering, construction and commissioning. The recent Carmen Copper Corporation (Carmen Copper) circuit upgrade has been completed in technology partnership with Outotec. The circuit upgrade was extensive and included new equipment additions to the comminution, flotation and dewatering circuits. Carmen Copper’s intimate knowledge of the ore characteristics, in conjunction with a trusted, knowledgeable technology partner, facilitated a robust circuit design, and fast-tracked the project execution. In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the "rods" required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

The underground mining process, from in situ characteristics of the unmined rock mass to the final mill product with fully liberated minerals, consists of a chain of unit operations. Some of them influence fragmentation while fragmentation impacts others. From a production point of view, fragmentation is a key parameter for the proper functioning of many unit operations and affects total production; it influences the ability to load, haul and crush the rock later in the process. Fragmentation varies because of rock mass strength, the presence of joints, the chosen explosive, specific charge (kg/m3) and quality of drill holes. The efficiency and result of unit operations such as drilling, blasting, loading and crushing depend on the rock properties, which vary throughout a mine. Generally speaking, operations are not well adapted to the actual rock properties, leading to a non-optimised flow in production. This paper presents the initial part of a project that will build knowledge on the impact of fragmentation on each step of the production chain in an underground mine. It identifies the key parameters of fragmentation, which influence the overall energy consumption and productivity in a mining operation through interviews, mine visits and a literature review. In the subsequent stages of the project, a number of field tests in the case study mine will address important segments of the production process where fragmentation is a major obstacle to improvements. Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. The Groote Eylandt manganese ore deposits contain mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane with lesser amounts of the manganese minerals lithiophorite, todorokite, psilomelane, and nsutite. The major non-manganese minerals which occur are quartz, kaolinite, and goethite.Determination of the mineralogy relies mainly on x-ray diffraction analysis. Quantitative methods for the determination of pymlusite and cryptomelane in Groote Eylandt manganese ores have been developed, A large amount of isomorphous substitution may occur in the manganese minerals and a number of minor and trace element associations have been noted. A correlation has been established between the potassium and cryptomelane contents for a wide range of ore types. Anomalous calcium, magnesium, and sodium values occur in samples containing todorokite, and barium is associated with psilomelane. Groote Eylandt lithiophorite appears to contain negligible amounts of lithium (<O· 05 per cent).A relationship between the H20+ and the Al203, K20, and Fe203 contents has been estahlished indicating that much of the combined water content is due to the presence of kaolinite and goethite, and cap be removed by beneficiation of the ore.

Based on the examination of thirty sets of contiguous matte and slag samples taken from industrial nickel smelters a relationship is predicted between oxidic nickel in slag, oxygen in matte and the Ni/Fe ratio in the matte. Oxidic nickel in the slag is found to increase with an increase in oxygen content of a matte of constant Ni/Fe ratio, and it is proposed that the relationship may be used to predict nickel solubility in slag from a knowledge of matte composition alone.

The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted.
