The development of the carbonization of brown coal briquettes to produce a hard char suitable for use in place of imported hard coke has continued in Victoria, and an experimental carbonization plant has recently been commissioned at Morwell by the Gas and Fuel Corpora.tion to assess the prospects for the commercial production and marketing of hard char in Victoria. The char offers advantages in its very low ash content and its uniform lump size, while the indications are that it could be marketed at a price competitive with that of imported hard coke. The hard char is unique amongst metallurgical fuels in combining a high reactivity with high physical strength, and research by the University of Melbourne into its utilization in foundry cupolas for melting iron has shown how modifications could be made to take advantage of these properties. An 18 inch experimental cupola has been built to test in practice the predictions made from this fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONSteady development has continued in Victoria from the promising laboratory researches at the University of Melbourne which were reported to the 1955 Annual Conference of The Institute (Worner, 1956). This work had shown that a hard lump char could be produced by the high temperature carbonization of standard industrial briquettes by careful control of the heating conditions, and that the special briquetting techniques adopted in Germany were unnecessary with Yallourn brown coal. Continuation of this research has led to the refinement of carbonization techniques and has increased the strength of the char until it has equalled that of conventional metallurgical cokes.

Traditionally, capital costs of major resource development projects have been estimated as a single amount to which a percentage accuracy has been assigned based on the method of preparation of the estimate, that is, on the amount of information available to develop the estimate.However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of a probabilistic approach to capital cost estimates, and of a more rigorous calculation of estimate accuracies and of the presentation thereof. Accuracies can be expressed with more certainty as a percentage of the estimate amount where the percentage represents one standard distribution on the probability curve for the capital cost of that specific project. Thus confidence levels can be stated for various estimated amounts - for example, it can be stated that there is an 85% chance that a stated amount will not be exceeded, or a 90% certainty that a (higher) amount will not be exceeded. Moreover, the right skewness of the probability distribution curve for most projects can be readily recognised and reflected in the evaluations. This enables senior executives and board members to have a clearer understanding of investment uncertainties, and the possible magnitude of commitments.

The igneous intrusions in SE Papua New Guinea are part of a sub-volcanic to plutonic, high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic suite. High-K andesitic to dacitic intrusives on Misima and Woodlark Islands, and shoshonitic intrusives in Milne Bay and the eastern Owen Stanley Ranges are related to late Cenozoic andesitic volcanism. Both suites are associated with epithermal Au-Ag deposits and weak porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. All significant alluvial and lode gold occurrences in the region are spatially related to intrusions. Intrusions in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and near Mt Suckling are core plutons related to basement doming, and appear to have no association with either volcanism or hydrothermal mineralisation. The core plutons are not petrochemi:ally distinct from the volcano-re:-ed Intrusions.

The outstanding environmental management initiatives undertaken by Novacoal at its Western Main Site near Lithgow in New South Wales over the past five years are detailed in this paper. These initiatives have been based on a combination of proven and innovative investigation and implementation techniques, close consultation with regulatory authorities and full support by colliery management. The results of these initiatives have enabled the colliery to exceed its pollution control obligations from a base well below industry standards. The initial poor condition of the mine was the result of over 50 years of traditional mining which paid little regard to environmental management. The transformation of the colliery within such a short period, with limited capital, is considered a model for the N.S.W. coal industry.

Underpinning the mining process is a continuum of prediction, specifically of tonnes, grade and recovery from exploration to grade control, through short-term mine design, to mining and processing. The interdependence of one activity on the other is so strong that it can be difficult to partition the activities and determine where there are issues, if any. Reconciliation is the process that compares the predictions of the various estimates to the actual product produced at the end of the production chain. Quite often, an attempt to understand the variances from one measuring point to the other creates a ‘wicked problem’.This study outlines the benefits of incorporating the principles of ‘systems thinking’ into the mining reconciliation process, by constructing a framework within which reconciliation is effectively managed. The philosophical base for any variances between successive links in the reconciliation chain cannot be attributed purely to the statistical variance between the predicted and the actual grades achieved, but should include the interrelationships between the technical and managerial professionals involved. Systems thinking, as an interdisciplinary approach, draws its ideas and concepts from a variety of disciplines, and in so doing can exploit their different strengths.The study described in this paper offers methodologies to analyse the task, in advance of developing a technical solution. Two systems thinking methodologies, Grounded Theory (GT) and Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) were employed. These methodologies, are geared towards dealing with relationships and interactions between individual parts and the whole. The GT coding in the study specified that the key activity that would drive the reconciliation process is through an effective reconciliation meeting, and the competencies of a ‘reconciliation team member’ This team member should be a good communicator and enjoy challenges, be open-minded and transparent, and have a broad perspective of the mining process and relationships across the different activities.CITATION:Adofo, R, 2017. The South Deposit Tailings Storage Facility (SDTSF), located at Grange Resources Pty Ltd’s (Grange) Savage River mine in north west Tasmania, has recently begun construction. The facility will provide storage for approximately 37 million cubic metres of tailings, equating to approximately 20 years’ tailings storage.The SDTSF embankment will be constructed entirely out of waste rock won from mining operations, and will feature a flow-through drain constructed from alkaline, non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock. This provides Grange with an economical storage solution for waste management (both tailings and waste rock) and maximises available space on site. The outflows discharged through the alkaline rock ‘flow-through’ will provide a long-term source of alkalinity to Main Creek, subsequently feeding into Savage River. This will provide environmental benefits to the downstream ecology that has long been degraded due to the effects of legacy acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), caused by historical mining operations.CITATION:Longey, R, Brett, D and Simmons, A, 2015. A unique, regional grid of deep (12 - 14 second record length), seismic reflection and refraction data has been recorded by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) across the offshore Gippsland Basin and parts of the adjacent Bass Basin, in southeastern Australia. These data have been combined with onshore mapping to produce a new model for the development of the Gippsland and adjacent Bass Strait basins. Overall, the Gippsland Basin contains up to 12 - 14 km of sediment in an ESE-trending depocentre bounded on its north and northwestern margins by a detachment ramp, and on its southern side by a relatively linear, listric fault system. The basin, together with the adjacent Bass and Otway Basins, appears to have formed as part of a linked, largely- strike-slip to 'transtensional' system, which started to extend through Bass Strait, probably during the latest Jurassic. Each of the basins developed by movement on a common detachment or detachment complex, which produced headwall extension at their western ends, in the areas now occupied by the Strzelecki Ranges, Otway Ranges - Torquay Sub-basin, and Robe Trough. Adjustments and reactivation from the mid Cretaceous of several postulated microplates in the region, largely in response to Tasman Basin rifting, gave rise to the wrench-related and compressional structures which form the major petroleum targets in the Gippsland Basin. However, the same process formed largely extensional stuctures in the Bass Basin. Our interpretation of the tectonic history of the Gippsland Basin leads us to the conclusion that there may have been several phases of petroleum generation and migration, and that potential petroleum traps appear to exist in the deeper section, in structures sometimes not reflected at the top or near-top Latrobe Group levels.

Orebodies are defined in economic terms in that they must satisfy conditions determined by costs of mining, extraction and marketing before being so described. Despite this they have an essential chemical character as specialized products resulting from geochemical differentiation, and it is surprising that so little basic geochemical research has been carried out with respect to ore occurrence and that prospecting methods based on geochemical principles are not more widely applied.Many exploration geologists associate geochemistry with analytical techniques applied to the detection of dispersed traces of metals from actual orebodies. Geochemical research, applied to economic geology, goes far beyond this limited field and the purpose of this paper is to discuss aspects of such research and its use in formulating exploration principles.THE GEOCHEMICAL BACKGROUND TO MINERAL OCCURRENCE AND EXPLORATIONThe three aspects of economic mineral deposits to which geochemical research can be of use in determining ore guides are genesis, control of deposition and mode of dispersion from orebodies after emplacement. The Gippsland Basin is unique in Australia in that it is a major resource based industry centre within a sensitive and special environmental context supplying Melbourne, a major urban/industrial environment with most of its energy 'on-line'. The environmental effects of the supply systems are generally local and mostly affect only those who are directly or indirectly dependent on the upstream systems. The major urban metropolis which is served remains largely unaware of the environmental impacts of the system upon which it is dependent, except when specific attention is drawn to them as in the case of the Latrobe Valley Outfall, algal blooms in the Gippsland Lakes, etc. This paper discusses the environmental context within which the energy industries operate, the environmental legislative framework which applies, the likely environmental impacts and some solutions. The energy resources of the Gippsland Basin occur in an area where the physical environment exhibits a wide variety of inherent energy states in its physical and biological regimes. The off-shore regions of the oil and gas platforms has to be able to withstand the wind and wave energy generated in a shallow sea in a confined waterway lying athwart the main current and climatic stream. The coastline includes the delicately balanced quiescent environments of Corner Inlet with its 'wilderness' tourism industry and the powerful surf and long shore drift and dunes of Ninety Mile Beach.

To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) We can be certain, then, that they must have been the first white men to set eyes on Mount Morgan; though to them it would have seemed to be nothing more than an insignificant hill...

The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. The Peelwood district of New South Wales is located some 65 miles south of Bathutst on the Tuena-Crookwell road. A number of occurrences of lead-zinc-copper ore are known from this district but only three mines, Peelwood, Cordillera and Mt. Costigan, have achieved any significant production. The purpose of the paper is to describe the mineral composition of sulphide ores from these three localities.HISTORYNo published information on the geology of the Peelwood area is available. Came (1899) reports that, at the time of cessation of mining operations in 1888, the Peelwood mine had produced some 600 tons of copper metal and regulus, the Cordillera mine had yielded 9000 tons of ore at the recoverable grade of 2·5 per cent Pb, 2·5 per cent Cu, 90z/ton Ag and 1 dwtjto:p. Au, but that no production figures were available from Mt. Costigan. No further work was carried out on these properties until 1951 when the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia instigated a programme of geological mapping and exploratory diamond drilling (Whitten, unpublished data, 1953). The explosives demolition of a post-stressed, steel reinforced, concrete road bridge in Australia’s capital city, Canberra. The bridge was 50 m from the new replacement bridge, 320 m from community structures and within five kilometres of the national parliament buildings. The job required multiple overlays of risk assessment, public relations, safe work procedures, specialised blast design, environmental predictions and flyrock controls. Project stakeholders included Worksafe, Roads ACT, bridge owners, consulting structural engineers, community groups and road users. The bridge precincts, including a major road underneath, had to remain operational to peak traffic in the days leading up to the demolition. The break-up and removal of debris had to be executed in just two days from Friday to have the road beneath re-opened for Monday morning city-bound traffic.In Canberra, all explosives demolitions are now viewed with particular caution after a demolition in 1997, during which a young girl was killed. Any approval requires that Explosives Regulations, AS2187 2006 and Worksafe processes are satisfied, and a convincing case presented for blasting as a safe and viable option.Our design used specialised shaped cutting and blasting charges to sever in situ concrete beams and tendons and to shatter components of the stressed concrete bridge assembly. We include comments on structural engineering reports dealing with pre-weakening mechanisms. The benefit of pre-weakening is that it reduces the amount of explosives needed to safely complete the job and facilitates quick removal of debris after the shot. The complementary skills of the team, each one an expert in his field, resulted in a highly successful demolition, praised by authorities as an outstanding example of controlled use of explosives.

Community members’ sources of information about companies’ social investments are often influenced by the messages in a variety of communication channels, such as newspapers, television and social media. In this sea of communication channels, corporate communications may not always have the desired effect in influencing community perceptions. This paper explores the efficacy of communication between mining companies and communities in Chile through content analysis of corporate sustainability reports and newspaper reporting.Chilean media reporting between 2005 and 2013 is examined to identify community perceptions of corporate social investments made by mining companies. Content within the Chilean newspapers El Mercurio (national) and Soy Chile (regional) is contrasted with content from corporate sustainability reports published by The National Copper Corporation of Chile (Codelco) and Barrick Gold Corporation, Canada (Barrick) for the same period. The objective is to identify differences in the way that corporate social investments are reported by companies in sustainable development reporting and by media in newspapers.Overall, the study demonstrates that the media’s framing and reporting of corporate activities was more negative than positive. Moreover, media outlets tended to focus upon the ‘negative impacts’ or ‘damage’ to communities brought about by mining developments. Conversely, companies’ public communications were largely focused upon direct improvements in livelihoods (health, education, etc) of neighbouring communities. This preliminary study provides a baseline for the development of new formats of effective communication with neighbouring communities. The Porgera Joint Venture commenced production during September 1990. A small tonnage underground mine extracts high grade gold ore using small scale stopes. Conventional drill and blast methods are used for development and production mining. Ground support is effected with Splitset anchors, grouted rebar bolts and grouted cable bolts. Splitsets and grouted rebar can be installed by mechanised means. Vertical crater retreat, slot and massfire, and modified VCR stoping tech- niques are used at Porgera. Stopes are backfilled with a relatively strong cemented rockf ill. Future stope sequences require recovery of pillars beside and under filled stopes.

With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand ↔ Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

After a snap-shot survey of water quality of streams draining various coal measures carried out in 2000 - 2001, West Coast Regional Council expanded its monitoring programme to better establish the condition of streams draining coal mining areas and to characterise the variability of water quality with respect to stream flow. Samples were collected for water quality indicators such as pH, sulphate, turbidity, conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen as well as macro-invertebrates, fish and assessments of stream habitat. Water quality sampling was carried out at 27 sites on 21 streams located from Page Stream near Seddonville in the north, to Seven Mile Creek near Dunollie in the South, and to Garvey Creek east of Reefton. There was relatively low variability of pH, conductivity and sulphate concentrations at most of the sites sampled. Conductivity and sulphate concentrations reduced with increasing flow and pH generally increased. Significant effects on macro-invertebrate and fish populations were identified at several of the sites where water quality sampling was undertaken. Of the water quality parameters tested, macro-invertebrates were mostly affected by pH. Although not sampled directly (conductivity was used as a surrogate) heavy metal concentration may explain some of the variation in macro-invertebrate communities. Three creeks affected by mine drainage were sampled for fish and no fish were present. Fish appear to be more sensitive to acid rock drainage that invertebrates. Using data from this survey and other studies conducted in the region, the total length of stream that is actually or highly likely to be adversely affected by acid rock drainage was estimated at 125 km. This figure is useful as a gauge as to the magnitude of the issue in this region and for setting of priorities for remediation. However, as it is only an estimate based on limited sampling sites, it should be used with caution.

The Zeehan field has yielded over 190 000 tons of lead and 26,000,000 oz of silver. Moh of the production took place between the initial discovery of silver-lead ore in 1882 and 1920, and the greatest part was extracted from fissure lodes in the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian rocks. It is demonstrated that the prosperity of the mines relied upon the silver content, which is apparently highest in these beds, particularly where spilitic rocks are associated with them. In contrast, galena occurring in orebodies emplaced in the Gordon Limestone is low in silver.Most of the workings are relatively shallow due in some cases to enrichment related to erosion surfaces.Fault zones within a complex anticlinal structure exposing the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian formations appear to have been major factors in the control of mineralization.

The copper-clay deposits consist largely of goethite and clayey mudstones carrying native copper, cuprite, and chalcocite. The mudstones are of Ordovician age, are interbedded with Fe-Mn carbonates, and probably contained syngenetic iron and copper sulphides. The secondary copper minerals have been derived from post-Devonian weathering in situ and also by deposition from surfaee and underground waters draining the adjacent mineralized volcanic rocks.

THE art of mine surveying has made very great progress in recent years, and is still advancing, perhaps faster than any other branch of surveying. The scope of the mine surveyor's duties has greatly increased, his instruments and methods have improved, the responsibility of his position is greater, and the end is not yet in sight.It might be supposed that such a steadily growing subject would have an adequate literature, but this is by no means the case and outsiders commonly judge mine surveyors by their text-books. Hardly any condemnation can be too strong for most of these books. The English books truckle to the antiquated and crude methods apparently still in use in England, and thereby largely aid in perpetuating them; they commonly in illustrative examples give the distances in fathoms, feet, and inches; they spend page after page discoursing on instruments that should have been forgotten long ago; they try to antagonize theory and practice by detailing such calculations as that a certain vein will contain 2,003.907 pounds of galena per square fathom, and then reduce this amazing quantity to hundredweights, quarters, and pounds. Nothing can be more unscientific, or, for that matter, less businesslike, than unwarranted assumptions of accuracy; it is, perhaps, the greatest curse of applied science. Here we have a calculation to thethousandth part of a pound, when there is probably an unavoidable error of two hundred pounds. What shall we say of a man who explains how to measure the depths of shafts to the hundredth part of an inch by means of short brass rods screwed together...
