With the recent emphasis worldwide on environmental protection and sustainable development, finding an enriched mineral deposit no longer guarantees mining development. Only if the identified resource can be exploited in an environmentally-friendly manner is it possible that a mine may be developed. Designed primarily to aid with exploring for similar deposits of a particular type, traditional genetic ore deposit models tend to ignore the fact that all mineral deposits are characterised by type-specific environmental signatures. In fact, how an ore deposit can be mined, the commodities of interest extracted and the resultant mine wastes managed are all largely dictated by the geology and mineralogy as well as the environmental setting of the deposit. An environmental ore deposit model integrates such related information to identify the environmental challenges associated with mining an ore deposit of a particular type and facilitates the selection a suitable combination of methods to minimise environmental risks and impacts. Given that environmental management consumes a large portion of the budget for a modern mining project, making informed decisions at all stages of mining development can reduce the overall project cost. Through case examples, this paper demonstrates how environmental ore deposit models may be useful in mine permitting, active mining and in site decommissioning. It is only through an innovative and flexible approach that the mining industry can shed its tarnished image and gain the social license to mine.

Monitoring of water infiltration into WhiteÆs waste rock dump at the Rum Jungle mine site in the Northern Territory, Australia, started in 1983, and has since produced a unique and long-running data set. Following closure of the uranium mining operations at the site, a soil cover was constructed on the dump in 1984 primarily to reduce water infiltration into, and the quantity of low quality effluent out of, the waste material. The performance of the cover in reducing water infiltration has been monitored using ten lysimeters installed across the dump prior to construction of the cover. Over the past eight years or so, the average infiltration rate as measured by the ten lysimeters appears to have risen compared to the early years of monitoring. The significance of this apparent increase is discussed given the variability observed in the data from individual lysimeters, and the variability in the rainfall. Estimates of the infiltration rate as measured by each of the lysimeters are examined using statistical tools. It is concluded that the infiltration rate has increased with time and with increasing rainfall. The increase with time is a stronger factor than the increase with rainfall. It is further surmised that the cover system at the locations of the lysimeters is less effective now at reducing infiltration into the dump than it was when newly installed.

A mine waste rock dump does not have any intrinsic value, yet is an inevitable structure in surface mining operations. Since the purpose of mining is to maximise profit, possible expenditure reduction in hauling waste rock to the dump, which can represent up to 50 per cent of the total operating cost, is highly desirable. Apart from cost, potential acid mine drainage (AMD), due to seepage from surface waste rock dumps containing reactive waste rock, could threaten the ecological balance, drinking water supplies and irrigation systems downstream from a mine site. In order to minimise these potential risks, selective placement of benign and reactive waste rock, and the encapsulation of reactive waste rock by benign waste rock, need to be carried out during the construction of the rock dump.In this paper, a new methodology, based on mixed integer programming (MIP) is developed to manage waste rock dumping. The model aims to minimise waste rock haulage costs by locating the optimum destination(s) for each waste rock block, while at the same time controlling the placement of reactive waste rock to minimise the potential for AMD. Tests on small-scale virtual data demonstrated that the model is capable of dealing with selective placement of different waste rock types, encapsulating reactive, potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock, and stockpiling benign waste rock for encapsulation and rehabilitation purposes. "Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri is an underground copper-zinc mine in turkey. The ore is highly variable with feed grades ranging from 1–4 per cent copper and 1–10 per cent zinc. Due to this variability, ore characterisation and blending strategies are crucial for performance optimisation.This paper presents a case study for a multidisciplinary approach to process optimisation, integrating Geometallurgical and advanced control methods to achieve optimised plant performance. The results from comprehensive metallurgical tests and surveys were used to develop a mathematical model utilising SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator® (version number 2.5.24.0). The model was employed to determine the most appropriate operational settings required to ensure that optimised grades and recoveries are achieved for each ore type.SGS’s Modular Expert Technology (MET) expert system was then implemented to target these optimum operational ranges utilising online grade and froth velocity measurements. The current commodities super-cycle has seen an explosion in the number of mining projects demanding human resources throughout the world. The demand for key personnel currently far outweighs the international talent pool and will take several years to subside. A highly effective project team can be the difference between a successful project and a bad public relations exercise. Blackwater Mine is in the central-southern Bowen Basin, immediately south of the township of Blackwater on the Capricorn Highway. The current open cut operation extracts coal from three main seams, designated Top, Middle and Lower, in the Late Permian Rangal Coal Measures cropping out on the eastern flank of the Comet Ridge. Complex geological structures, dominated by E-W normal faults and N-S reverse faults, have significant detrimental effects on coal mining operations. Historical exploration before 2010 involved several types of drilling only to understand structure, coal quality and washability. Hence, although drilling data was combined with limited pit mapping and observation, unknown structures were still often encountered during excavations and led to mining surprises. In 2010 BHP completed 200-line km of closely spaced 2D seismic survey to capture gross and detailed structures followed by fit for purpose structural drilling to confirm major structures in the northern part of the mine. In 2018 a high density 9.2 km2 3D seismic survey was completed in the southern part of the mine. Subsequently, a 17.2 km2 survey was completed in 2020 to cover the northern active mining area. It allowed geoscientists to successfully map previously unknown major faults and seam splits, which could potentially impact the mineability of the area. It is important to note, that faults interpreted using modern high-density 3D data can be interpreted with dramatically higher confidence in the fault dip and azimuth orientation in comparison to the legacy 2D data. Along with targeted drilling, pit mapping and structural interpretation, the outcome adds value to mine planning and operations. This paper outlines recent successful seismic 3D data acquisition and interpretation. In detail, the paper presents case studies on how the data can be incorporated into a structural model to improve geological knowledge, enable geotechnical assessment, and support safe and efficient coal mining in a large and structurally complex mine.

These sensors enable real-time data transmission and continuous monitoring of key parameters, providing decision-makers with timely insights. However, the interconnected nature of these devices has introduced complexities, resulting in inconsistencies across operations. Addressing these challenges, this research explores the application of modern digital principles to the mining industry through the Reference Architecture Model Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0). RAMI 4.0 offers a robust framework that integrates digital and physical systems, promoting data transparency, interoperability, and decentralised decision-making. This study aims to briefly introduced framework designed for the unique challenges of mining operations, leveraging the latest digital technologies. The lack of standardisation in the mining sector highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle issues such as interoperability, scalability, security, safety, and repeatability. Establishing standard procedures can ensure smooth interaction between connected devices, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency in the growing IoT ecosystem within the mining industry. Introducing a well-defined reference architecture like RAMI 4.0 can streamline management processes and improve operational efficiency in mining. By adopting this framework, the mining industry can effectively navigate the challenges of digital transformation, leading to a more connected and resilient future. The study concludes that RAMI 4.0, with its structured approach, can significantly enhance the efficiency and productivity of mineral processing operations, fostering sustainable growth in a digitally driven industrial landscape.

The United States (US) coal mining industry has been working under comprehensive planning, operating and rehabilitation regulatory requirements for nearly 35 years. The public desire for environmental protection during mining and rehabilitation following mining to achieve post-mining land use and sustainability goals has been a major factor and continues to influence the process. Mining companies have evolved operations to achieve outcomes that address the desired goals and regulatory requirements cost-effectively and successfully. Over the 35 year regulatory period, requirements for more diverse topography, specialised revegetation communities, landform stability and assured sustainability have increased and become more complex. These challenges are effectively met by maximising integration of mine planning and operating with the rehabilitation process. Rehabilitation is then implemented in a more timely and efficient manner and with effective results that achieve desired outcomes, commonly with added value. Peabody Energy (Peabody) has taken this approach in its US operations and this paper discusses an integrated approach and illustrates learnings and results with examples from several of its western US operations.CITATION:Pfannenstiel, V, 2012. As greater amounts of fine iron ore concentrates enter the marketplace, new investments in iron ore pelletising capacity are inevitable to deliver these concentrates to steel industry consumers. When investors assess the two well-proven pelletising technologies, the straight grate and grate-kiln, the most appropriate choice may not be immediately evident. Certain technical, market and site-specific factors will favour one technology over the other; investors need to be aware and understand these factors in order to make the best investment decision. Hatch has compared the merits of both technologies regarding plant configuration; type of iron ore processed; energy consumption and flexibility to use a variety of fuels; ability to produce the required pellet quality; required plant capacity and scale; operating and capital costs and environmental performance. Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. The Hazelwood Mine (HM) commenced operations in the 1950s and was originally operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) prior to it becoming privatised. ENGIE, the current owners of the Hazelwood Mine ceased operations in 2017 and have since transitioned the site into the rehabilitation and closure phase, which is to encompass a full pit lake as part of the final landform. A key aspect of HM closure is the maintenance of long-term stability of the pit slopes to deliver a final landform which is safe and sustainable, particularly given its proximity to critical public receptors. The Princes Freeway, which is the primary access route to the Latrobe Valley (LV), and the Morwell Township are both located immediately to the north of the HM. Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. Martabe gold and silver mine is operated by PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR) and is situated in northern Sumatra and comprises several deposits in steep terrain, and in a tropical climate, that are required to be developed in the optimal sequence for the best possible Net Present Value (NPV) return on the project. In addition, the waste rock from excavations and tailings from processing is a by-product to be scheduled and used for a number of purposes identified as part of life-of-mine planning. These uses include construction of the current integrated tailings storage facility (TSF) as well as future engineering construction and waste disposal projects which includes plans for a program of in-pit backfilling. These plans need to be aligned to ensure the waste rock and tailings can be contained relative to the production rate. Given that the site will have multiple open pit voids upon cessation of mining activities opportunities for integration of in-pit disposal of mine waste have now been assessed with technical studies to review the practicality of the approach with respect to operational challenges and conformance with closure planning requirements. This includes assessment of disposal of waste rock, tailings (including consideration of filtered tailings) and co-disposal of waste rock and filtered tailings.

The Kibali Gold Mine is currently comprised of several open pits, a 3.5 Mtpa underground mine and a 7.5 Mtpa processing plant. Development of the underground operation commenced in December 2012, with initial access established through twin surface declines, followed by the commencement of a blind sink 8 m diameter rock hoist shaft in March 2013. Stope production started in December 2014 with ore and waste trucked to surface. The 755 m deep blind shaft sink was completed in August 2015 together with the cutting and equipping of three main station levels. Two of these levels provide access for the establishment of the underground materials handling system as well as the main dewatering system for the mine. This paper covers the process of determining the optimal location of the Kibali hoisting shaft relative to project-specific critical factors, and then focuses on the design and implementation journey associated with the off-shaft development that essentially encompasses the Material Handling System (MHS) for the mine. The journey starts from the findings of the previous owners Feasibility Study (FS), a subsequent Optimised FS, followed by detailed engineering through to implementation. It was identified during implementation that a significant change in the designed off-shaft layout was required following detailed underground geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations. In addition, the paper provides details on the MHS performance since commissioning to steady state, and on key learnings relating to the overall project process.

The spatial variability of geometallurgical characteristics in a mineral deposit can have significant impact on financial and mine planning, mineral processing, concentrate quality and tailings composition throughout the life of a project. These characteristics that may determine the success of a project are not readily apparent to geologists unless they are integrated with deposit geology and assay data, modelled in 3D and incorporated into resource block models.One of the primary objectives of geometallurgy is to integrate and incorporate various geologic, geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters into resource block models, which typically are limited to in situ tonnes and grade of economic metals. Critical attributes, such as concentration of deleterious elements that affect the project viability need to be identified and integrated into the resource block model early in the exploration stage to predict project profitability and address potential environmental impacts.Using data from a volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit we present an example of the integration of ore geochemistry (cadmium, arsenic and antimony) with the results of preliminary, bench-scale metallurgical test work in a 3D geometallurgical model that predicts subdomains of poor-quality concentrate and tailings containing environmentally-sensitive elements. This critical information was incorporated into the existing resource block model in order to inform both financial modelling and mine planning.This example demonstrates that geometallurgical data can be effectively integrated with geological and assay data using Leapfrog MiningTM software (Leapfrog Mining) early in the exploration stage of a project. Three-dimensional representations of geometallurgical data can be created directly using primary additive data, as well as from proxies of non-additive parameters. Resource block models can be updated continually with new information as the project passes from exploration through production. In addition, the software allows for 3D visualisation of the characteristics of the materials that will eventually constitute the mill concentrate, tailings, and waste. This study emphasises the critical importance of establishing a systematic geometallurgical approach early in the exploration stage that can be continuously updated with new information throughout the life of the project. In the example that we present, sulfide ore that had otherwise been identified as high-value (in the absence of geochemical and metallurgical data) turns out to be low-value ore due to concentrate penalties and increased environmental impact.

Dust emissions from mining, material processing and ship loading operations (fugitive dust sources) are an environmental issue of increasing concern to both government regulators and the community. The main concerns relate to potential amenity, health and environmental impacts from the emissions. Therefore it is imperative that mining/ processing operations, as part of their overall environmental management, reduce fugitive particulate emissions to as low a level as is practicably possible. This technical paper outlines the mechanisms that lead to fugitive particulate emissions, the importance of understanding the exact cause of fugitive emissions, monitoring methods that can be used to quantify the emissions from specific sources, the use of atmospheric dispersion modelling in dust management and innovative dust management strategies including predictive meteorology and proactive management.

The effect of aluminium on nitrogen solubility was investigated by equilibrating melt comprising master alloy of Fe-Al with pure electrolytic iron in a controlled atmosphere (pure argon) at 1873 K. Nitrogen in the samples was measured by sampling technique using inert gas fusion absorptiometry. It was found that nitrogen content decreases steadily with aluminium concentration and gradually, becomes close to 1 ppm for very high aluminium steels. Wagner’s second order interaction parameter formalism has been used to estimate the equilibrium constant and interaction parameters. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation showed, dual-phase inclusions comprising AlN phase surrounding alumina core. The 3D morphology of inclusions was studied by extracting the sample from the top and the central bottom portion of the solidified ingot. A sparse distribution of nitrogen was found for most of the inclusions which manifested the presence of almost pure alumina inclusions with different morphologies and sizes.

"The Braemar Iron Formation is atypical ore when compared to the current magnetite ores being processed. In attempting to process and economically recover the vast quantities of iron ore stored within the Braemar Iron Formation, æshifting the paradigmÆ is required. The formation has a low Davis tube recovery (DTR) grade of 15 - 20 per cent, which is much lower than magnetite ores processed in Australia. Despite this, by thoroughly testing and understanding the ore characteristics, it is found that the Braemar ores have significant advantages to processing than the harder banded iron formation (BIF) and taconite resources.The Hawsons magnetite iron ore resource has been known from the early 1960s when CRA explored the area. The grade was low and the Pilbara region discovery lead to the development of high-grade direct shipping hematite ores. Carpentaria Exploration (CAP) rediscovered the magnetite whilst undertaking multi-commodity exploration in the Broken Hill district during 2009. Shifting the paradigm away from grade the advantages of processing this ore are achieved by having an extremely low waste to ore ratio, lower Bond work index, lower abrasion levels and high-grade magnetite concentrates with little impurities other than silica. While developing the Hawsons Iron Project (HIP) it became more apparent that a positive business case is achievable when the following factors are exploited: very large resource - the resource is contained within one pit the rock fractures easily along grain boundaries - ideal for cheap impact crushing of the ore the ore is extremely soft, with a Bond work index of 6.3 - 8.0 kWh/t all major infrastructure required is readily available - rail, power, access and port the mine is in close proximity to Broken Hill - rich mining history and skill set available the resource contains many billions of tonnes of magnetite mineralisation.Shifting the paradigm by selecting equipment suitable for processing soft ores and not hard BIF or taconite ores and taking locality and available infrastructure into account may change the way people approach new low-grade resources in future.CITATION:Koenig, R L and Broekman, K T, 2013. At the last MassMin Conference in Sudbury, Caterpillar’s vision of a continuous mining concept for block caving operations was presented on the background of global raw material demand and its continuous increase. By analysing today’s structure of mining processes in block caving, the paper (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012) highlighted the main bottlenecks in the process chain and identified conceptual solutions by help of a case study. The main focus was the paradigm shift from discontinuous batch type operation to a continuous mining process of the blocks.In 2016, the strategic vision has taken major strides forwards and remote continuous operation has become a reality. Caterpillar’s continuous operation system – the Rock Flow system – was successfully installed in Codelco’s Andina mine and start of operation is scheduled in the first half of 2016.Based on continuous product developments, this paper sets the focus on two main aspects of continuous mining. First, field experiences of the Rock Flow system will be shared, highlighting the Andina project course from system installation, to commissioning and successful system start. The second aspect concentrates on the system and mine layout as discussed in the case study scenario in MassMin 2012 (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012).Based on Caterpillar`s continuous product development, the Rock Flow system set-up and panel design were modified for a general roadway design and drawpoint layout. The new design allows an optimised use in block preparation phase (spreading) and full production phase (reaping), operating a fleet of load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and Rock Flow systems. The combined use of the two technologies optimises the mining process in every stage of block life and significantly increases the performance of the continuous block caving operation in the production panel to pave the road for the next generation of super caves.CITATION:Frenzel, M, 2016. "Automation offers the mining industry great potential for improvements in productivity and safety. However, the experience of introducing automation in other industries has been that the full potential of new technology is not always realised. Designers are surprised, for example, to find that automation does not eliminate human errors. Unwanted and unexpected consequences also arise if the introduction of automation fails to consider how people will adapt to the new technology. A focus on the technical aspects of automation is necessary but not sufficient for success. The potential for improvements in productivity and safety promised by automation will only be achieved if the joint cognitive system that emerges from the combination of humans and automation is designed to perform the functions required for system success.
