It is the aim of this paper to review recent research in understanding the role of cyanide in the elution of gold. Under conditions of severe pre-treatment (high temperatures and levels of cyanide), the dynamics of elution are determined mainly by the adsorption equilibrium and the flow conditions in the column. When conditions are less favourable for desorption, transport phenomena are rate controlling. The most important sub-processes of elution are the changes in cyanide, potassium and gold concentrations, as well as the change in passivation of the carbon surface. Mathematical models to simulate the various sub-processes are described briefly.The presence of an irreversibly adsorbed species such as AuCN on the carbon is determined mainly by the pH, temperature and the type of carbon. Cyanide in the pre-treatment step will convert the AuCN to reversibly adsorbed Au(CN)2. Competition between cyanide and Au(CN)z for adsorption sites will enhance the elution of gold, but plays a minor role at elevated temperatures. The most important effect of cyanide is its reaction with the functional groups on the carbon to passivate the surface for the adsorption of anionic metal cyanides and thereby promote the elution of gold. This passivation, caused by the degradation of cyanide, is strongly temperature dependent. Free cyanide in the elution step of an AARL elution is of lesser importance than the cyanide in the pre-treatment step. Elution without cyanide is possible only after cold acid washing, and has been proven on plant scale.

Computer software is an integral part of mining operations today with many sites using six or more software packages on a daily basis. However, the use of these different programs generates the need for substantial staff training. The current trend toward large integrated packages to solve this problem is counter-productive because the relatively small companies producing specialised mining software do not have the resources to develop quality software with all the required features. Software standards are being proposed by various parties but recent history indicates these will be unsuccessful. An alternative approach is suggested using the various standards which have been developed for the Windows operating system.

A laboratory study of size segregation is described using a model of a Paul Wurth hopper industrailly employed for blast furnace charg- ing purposes. Experimental charge materials used in the study were glass ballotin.i (1-4mm dia.) and sinter fines (0.25-4mm). The tracer material employed consisted of coloured glass beads. The results of the study show that the discharge stream from a Paul Wurth hopper is characterised by an initial negative segregation followed by a positive segregation and that this segregation pattern is a property of the hopper geometry and the filling conditions. A simple computer model based on experimental tracer concentration results is proposed. The measured segregation results and those predicted by the model show close agreement. Application of the results with special reference to the effect of size segregation on charge permeability in blast furnaces is also included.

German hard coal mining operations have decreased for more than 40 years. Current political decisions are leading to a discontinuation of subsidised black coal mining by the year 2018. This decision will, however, be reviewed once again in the year 2012. The enormous increases in productivity, which were achieved in previous years, have so far not led to an achievement of market requirements. Coal mining at depth of more than 1200 m in multiple seam environments is not yet competitive in global comparison. In 2008 the 24 faces left in eight mines produced about 20 million tonnes of usable steam coal. Management and the workforce will be reduced in parallel; from today until 2012 by more than half. The average age of personnel is increasing dramatically and nearly no new personnel are recruited. With this background in mind, increasing continuously coal mining productivity becomes more and more difficult. Above all, this goal was reached by mechanisation, then by increasing the mining machine power and then by enhanced machine control systems. The first attempts to automatically operate full face equipment from above ground were in the early 1980s. After successful automation of the face equipment, the emphasis is now on mine logistics. Autonomous monorail transport was introduced and tested in 2007. Since the development rate of machine improvements has its limits, the focus is on the full interaction of the total production system. Here information technology (IT) becomes important; the driver for more productivity. Actual developments aim for the complete and general homogeneous IT infrastructure both above ground as well as underground. The explosive environment needs high level investments in safe technology, eg access points for WLAN and fibre optics for underground use (ATEX certification). New technology availability also drives the enhancements of management and process control systems. Innovations in the mining industry often comprise technology advances through the adoption of well-known technologies. With virtual reality (VR) teaching and training systems advanced computational instruments, both in software and hardware development, were applied in the German coal mining industry for ten years. Widening lists of applications as well as the encouraging achievements show the economical benefits of investing in virtual reality technology both for teaching and training and for knowledge management. The paper discusses the actual technical achievements as well as in IT infrastructure utilisation and also in employment of virtual reality based systems. Special focus and deeper insight will be given to the fibre optics and WLAN hardware integration as well as software developments. The pocket personal computer (PC) is used to enhance underground material transport and data acquisition. The knowledge-based maintenance system (KBMS) integrates real-time virtual reality knowledge elements, such as repair process descriptions. It gives access to expert documentation by intelligent search algorithms and 3D representations of major mining machinery.

The aim of this paper is to discuss how to form work and organisations in the mines of the future. The Kiruna underground iron ore mine in the far north of Sweden is used as an example on how technical development affects organisational issues like skills, work identity and gender. Over a period of 50 years one can see a transformation of work from manual underground work to automation and remote control from surface level. What characterised the old underground workface was the close relation between man and the hard rock and with arduous physical work under dangerous conditions. Today, the face miners are located on the seventh level of an office building close to the mine. There is also an emerging, and in many aspects already evident, knowledge transformation û from the old and obsolete physical and tacit knowledge and skills (for example the ability to æread the rockÆ) to something new, which can be described as abstract æhigh-techÆ knowledge and skills. The modern technology has created a new type of work û new in terms of competencies and knowledge as well as workload and organisation. At the same time the mining company are recruiting more women and promoting the former pure male work as attractive workplaces for both women and men. All this has effects on how individuals and company create and recreate skills, identity and gender. To some extent the technological development predestines these changes, but there are some choices to be done when forming good work and organisations for the mines of the future. The traditional mining workplace culture and behaviours and the old type of masculinity, the æmachoÆ style, will be challenged by the new æhigh-techÆ work and new competency demands. The changes risk meeting restoring responses, which can have negative impact on the performance of the organisation, for example making it inflexible and perhaps ælaggingÆ behind the technological development. These questions need to be handled when planning future mining.

A bulk analyser based on the gamma-ray resonance scattering process can be used to give a rapid and accurate measure of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel averaged over a large mass of sample, typi- cally 20 kg. It is shown that for a bulk sample containing about 3 wt.% Cu, crushing to -25 mm is the only sample preparation requited for analysis to within an error of about 0.06 wt.% Cu (errors quoted are one standard deviation). A comparison of bulk analyser and con- ventional assays on the same bulk samples can be used to estimate the sample preparation errors in the conventional methods. The squared deviations between bulk analyser and conventional assays are approximated by the sum of variances in sample preparation, conventional analysis, and bulk sample analy- sis. The sample preparation error was esti- mated as 0.26 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -2 mm before splitting, 0.08 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -0.35 mm before splitting, and 0.04 wt.% Cu for the average of 15 grab samples from bulk samples which had been crushed to -2 mm. The Woodcutters deposit, 65 km south- southeast of Darwin, N.T., consists of a series of veins of pyrite, sphalerite, and galena with some silver, cadmium, antimony, and arsenic minerals. The veins are hosted by the Early Proterozoic Whites Formation, a sequence of black slates with interbedded carbonate rocks and minor ash tuffs. The known orebodies occur about 300 to 500 metres above the contact of Whites Formation with the underlying Coomalie Dolomite, which consists of dolomite and magne- site. The stratigraphic setting is lithologic- ally similar to that of the Mt. Isa deposit, Queensland. The orebodies are replacement veins occ- urring along fault and dyke structures which are sub-parallel to the axes of a double-nosed faulted anticline. The orebodies are in part associated with two unusual carbonatized lam- prophyric dykes. The dykes were intruded after the fold and its slaty cleavage were formed. The ore has replaced the dykes and host rocks and is therefore late-stage hydrothermal miner- alization. The known orebodies are open at depth. A "bonanza" of high-grade ore occurs at the upper part of the largest orebody and is currently the subject of an open cut mine planning study by a consortium of companies headed by Nicron Resources Ltd.

Mining for sand was active in South Delhi during the last four decades disregarding all norms of safety. The aim of the paper is to highlight what is proposed to be done for mining in Delhi. Apart from the damage to the landscape, the earlier operations gave rise to visual pollution to the scenic Delhi area and there is immediate need of land restoration and landscaping. Future mining should be planned so that the resultant land surface completely merges with the topography and gradually assimilates with the green belt. Restoration of old workings, land reclamation and details of plantation in old pit areas are included. The project also provides a demon- stration site to show the impact of eco-development leading to new legisla- tive measures, as it is in the Capital of India itself and therefore more accessible than any other area. What has been suggested for mining is not the latest and the most modern equipments from the Western point of view but the right equipment to meet the specific requirement of the country. Financial projections are included alongwith technical details of the project to show the benefits to the society. It is concluded that eco-development is essential for the mining in the Twenty- First Century.

The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

Recent work on computerised mineral resource databases at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited has concentrated on the development of the GERM, REGCHEM, and MINLIT databases, and their integration in a Geographic Information System using MapInfo software on an IBM-compatible microcomputer local area network. GERM (GEological Resource Map) is a mineral deposit inventory with national coverage and more than 10 300 entries. REGCHEM (REGional Exploration GeoCHEMistry) is a database of stream sediment analyses from open-file mining company reports, containing more than 14 000 sample sites from the Coromandel and west Nelson regions. MINLIT (MINeral LITerature bibliography) is an annotated bibliography of literature on topics relating to the exploration and geology of mineral deposits in New Zealand, and includes more than 5000 entries for published books and papers, and unpublished mining company reports, university theses, and government reports. Master sets of GERM and MINLIT continue to be maintained on a VAX mainframe network but REGCHEM is operated only in the PC environment using the Microsoft ACCESS database management system software.

With increasing depth of mining, geotech nical factors assume increasing importance in the design and operation of open pit coal mines. Dragline strip mines are particularly sensitive to stability conditions since the draoline is a relatively inflexible machine, particularly in relation to its limited dump- ing radius for overburden disposal. Geotechnical factors relevant to strip mine design include: 1. spoil pile stability 2. wall stability 3. floor stability 4. excavation characteristics 5. groundwater conditions A basic geotechnical investigation pro- gram for new mine feasibility studies is described. This includes: 1. terrain evaluation 2. geotechnical drilling and logging 3. geophysical logging 4. materials testing 5. seismic refraction traversing 6. groundwater studies Such a program will give an overall geotech- nical assessment of the site and highlight any areas which may require further, more detailed Investigations

On 15 August 1998 the first section of the PUTRA LRT system was opened to the public as a free service prior to official commencement of revenue service on 1 September 1998. It is a remarkable achievement to open a highly advanced medium capacity urban railway scheme in four years after the outline concept began. Even more remarkable is the implementation of the next stage which is the underground section planned to be operational in mid-1999. The decision to build the first underground railway in any major urban centre is a technical challenge. The PUTRA LRT System can be likened to Hong Kong when the initial MTR system began in the 1970s and Singapore MRT in the 1980s. Prior to the PUTRA railway very little bored tunnelling had been undertaken in Kuala Lumpur. A few shallow sewer tunnels had been built but the main experience of tunnelling in Malaysia had been for water, hydroelectric and road tunnels usually through granite formations. The ground conditions in Kuala Lumpur were known mainly from experience of piled foundations and occasional deep excavations. The suitability and likely difficulties to be experienced during bored tunnelling could only be theoretically predicted. In both Hong Kong and Singapore, government owned corporations were set up to implement the scheme, but in Kuala Lumpur the whole project has been undertaken by a private company PUTRA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Renong Berhad.

A recently-developed model is used as a tool to optimise the design of blasts used to create final walls in large open pit mines. The use of this tool has allowed present blasting practice and proposed designs to be evaluated to predict the likely extent of rock damage behind the final wall. The evaluation of the damage is dependent on the predominant local geology. Modelling of damage using the software allows the potential zones of rock damage to be evaluated under the following criteria: I . the extent of new fractures formed in the intact rock mass; and 2. the distance to which dilation and extension of existing discontinuities and pre-existing fractures will likely occur. The computer model has been used to examine present blasting practice and to estimate the damage induced by final and intermediate rows of blastholes. The results of current practices are presented in a visual form that allows simple comparisons to be made for any proposed changes in design. To confirm the predictions of the modelling, physical measurements are being undertaken at selected mines to quantify damage behind blast patterns, and experimental programs are underway to measure near-field vibration, or shock, levels. The computer modelling software is being used to qualify and improve the design of final rock slopes in large surface mining excavations, and to provide site engineers with well-defined design criteria for consistency in design. The model is seen to be just one of many tools which are being used in large open cut mining operations to gain an improved understanding of blasting and blast control.

Heavy minerals are mined from two fossil strandlines on the southern Swan Coastal Plain. The Capel shoreline, 7 km inland, and the Yoganup shoreline, 15 km inland are arcuate, northwest-facing, and remote from the modern coast. Based on foraminiferal and molluscan assemblages, the shorelines are probably of Pliocene age. The Yoganup shoreline is adjacent to the Whicher Scarp, which is cut into the Leederville Formation (Lower Cretaceous) at the southern boundary of the Swan Coastal Plain. Stratigraphic relations and detailed sedimentology have been studied from temporary exposures in the Yoganup Extended and Yoganup North mines, within a strandline complex at 27 m and 18-33 m above sea level respectively. Heavy minerals were deposited in thin, shallowing-upward sequences along a wave-dominated clastic shoreline cut into pre-Cainozoic sediments. Lithofacies units deposited in eolian, foreshore, shoreface and lagoonal environments are the most significant sites of heavy mineral accumulation. The data collected provide a basis for further exploration.

Properties of surface films on chalcopyrite and pyrite differ due to variations in the mechanism of oxidation of the two minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite the first step in the oxidation is the release of iron as ferric ions, which hydrolyse depending upon conditions prevalent in solution. The iron oxide/hydroxide layer formed by hydrolysis of ferric ions is quite porous and easily detachable from the surface of chalcopyrite. When the surface oxide layer is detached a sulphur-rich layer is exposed making chalcopyrite hydrophobic. The thickness and properties of the sulphur-rich layer determine its flotation response, both in the absence and presence of collectors. In the case of pyrite, on the other hand, iron is released as ferrous ions which require much higher pHs to hydrolyse. These ions remain adsorbed on the surface of pyrite making the surface hydrophilic. When the iron species are complexed with chelating agents such as ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, pyrite was hydrophobic. Siderite forms in the presence of carbonate ions, which might be present in several flotation systems. Siderite nucleated on isolated sites at the surface. The presence of such a precipitate is likely to influence the interaction of pyrite with various reagents thereby altering its flotation behavior. To determine the mechanism of oxidation, kinetics of oxidation of chalcopyrite and pyrite was studied using several electrochemical techniques, namely, cyclic voltammetry, polarisation and impedance spectroscopy. Floatability of the minerals was investigated by measurement of contact angles on mineral electrodes and by Halimond tube flotation. Impedance spectroscopy was especially useful for estimating various properties of surface film for both the minerals. Properties such as charge transfer resistance, porosity, and capacitances of the surface films on the two minerals are compared under several conditions of oxidation. These properties were found to be a strong function of the rate and the extent of oxidation.

This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design. A program of microseismic noise monitor ing for gas outbursts, in conjunction with other mining engineering measurements and observations, is being undertaken at Leichhardt colliery in Queensland. Headings are developed at present by shotfiring. The equipment being used in this study includes piezoelectric accelerometer assemblies to detect microseismic noise which is then transmitted to a surface base station by cable. Data are recorded on an analogue magnetic tape recorder and are also analysed on-line using a commercially-available acoustic emission pulse analyser. It is proposed to re-interpret recorded data using various modes of analysis and to interface a desktop computer to the existing system to permit continuous monitoring on the mine site. No outbursts have been recorded or analysed and only a limited number of develop- ment shots, and the resultant microseismic activity, have been recorded to date.

Large-scale open cut mining in the Bowen Basin has been undertaken for over 40 years. During this period, improved mechanical capability and economics have allowed extraction to greater depths, resulting in post-mining landforms of increasing height. Rehabilitation practitioners face significant challenges in stabilising these landforms and require a comprehensive understanding of the Bowen Basin Coal Measures strata likely to be disposed of during mining. Knowledge regarding the potential behaviour of differing spoil materials (following disturbance) provides a rationale to maximise short- to medium-term surface stability of constructed landforms by identification, salvage and advantageous reuse of cladding resources as a means to minimise erosional risks.CITATION:Emmerton, B, Burgess, J, Baumgartl, T and Erskine, P, 2016. Technical applications of computers within the coal industry are expanding rapidly with an increase in the number of users and user locations. Collinsville Coal Company Pty Ltd is an example of a remote and growing user company which has a Telecom link to MIM's ICL mainframe computer in Brisbane. The Planning Department is one of the technical user departments at Collinsville, with a variety of VDU, plotting and screen graphics hardware supported by the MIM Computing network. Current applications involve the storage, retrieval and manipulation of borehole information, plan and map production, volume calculations from survey data and mine ventilation modelling for underground Operations.
