The discovery of Olympic Dam in 1975 and, more recently, Prominent Hill in 2001 and Carrapateena in 2005 demonstrates the potential for world-class IOCG deposits in South Australia. Potential for further discovery of large IOCG mineral deposits in the Gawler Craton and the Curnamona Province is high because of continental-scale pervasive iron-rich alteration, crustal-scale structural preparation and unique magmatic-hydrothermal conditions. Recent exploration successes point to the effectiveness of new exploration tools and technologies to locate this style of mineralisation under cover. The gold endowment of these orebodies located in South Australia exceeds 75 Moz, with further discoveries to come. The lead time between discovery and development of the multi-million ounce Prominent Hill copper-gold mine in less than seven years demonstrates how quickly this style of deposit can be brought into production in South Australia. Clearly these long-life, multi- commodity IOCG deposits mines are an immediate exploration and future growth opportunity for the gold mining industry to replace ever depleting gold inventories.

DML Resources Limited - Mining Division produced over 50 000 oz of alluvial gold in the 1995 - 1996 year from five operations located in the West Coast and Otago Regions on the South Island of New Zealand. DML Resources Limited - Mining Division have a twenty year history of alluvial gold mining development in New Zealand. Recent expansions have seen the establishment of two operations in Chile whilst exploration continues in Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. The overseas growth is based on a stable production base in New Zealand focussed on the West Coast and Southland/Otago present and future operations. DML Resources consider that the mining potential in the Arahura Valley on the West coast will be fundamental to their New Zealand operations for some time. Collectively the plants operating in this catchment are referred to as the Poutini Project. Recent and late Pleistocene gravels derived from the erosion of the Alpine Schists running parallel to the Alpine Fault located on the Pacific/Australian Plant boundary are thought to be the sources of the alluvial gold in the Arahura and adjacent catchments. These gravels have been extensively mined for the past 130 years yielding some six million ounces over this period. Production from the Poutini Project started in 1989 and stood at approximately 35 000 oz for the 1995 - 1996 year. This production was split among three plants each working different areas of the deposit. Recovery techniques from each of the plants are fundamentally the same. Gravels are fed to a floating treatment plant where, following screening, the gold is recovered using jig plants and knudsen bowls. Overburden to wash stripping ratios vary between zero and seven to one with plants treating between 80 and 250 cubic metres per hour. Restoration of the land following mining is undertaken progressively. All land in the Poutini Project area mined to date has been restored to a standard suitable for dairy farming purposes. The Poutini Project is a cooperative venture between the Maori landowners and DML Resources Ltd. The Arahura River has particular cultural significance to the Maori as it is the source of the much valued greenstone or pounamu a type of jade valued for jewellery and tools. The Poutini Agreement was signed in 1989 setting out the role of each party in the mining of the Arahura and adjacent lands. Current exploration and development should extend the resource to allow mining to continue on the Poutini project for an additional three to five years at current gold prices. Production within new Zealand beyond this point may be compromised by increasing difficulty in gaining access to prospective areas within New Zealand, lowered margins due to high New Zealand dollar exchange rates and the overall lowering of alluvial headgrades throughout the West Coast and Otago/Southland regions. To counter these effects DML has continued to improve on operational efficiency and performance monitoring to optimise the mining practices used. This paper detains the background to the Poutini Project, the geology, plant and equipment used together with descriptions of the current mining methods employed.

The Morobe Province of central Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been mined for gold for nearly a century, although it is only in the past decade that large-scale modern mining commenced. The Hidden Valley gold-silver project began construction in mid-2006 and production by August 2009, and is located in the mountains above Wau in the headwaters of the Watut River. The mine is owned and operated by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which also owns the Wafi-Golpu project, comprising the Wafi gold deposit and Golpu copper-gold deposit, situated in the Watut River Valley. Together they represent a potential mine of the scale of Ok Tedi or Bougainville or bigger. The MMJV is owned in equal shares by Newcrest Mining from Australia and Harmony Gold from South Africa. Although Hidden Valley was the first large-scale mine in PNG to engineer and build a tailings storage facility, poor environmental management during construction and early operations led to significant erosion of waste rock and sedimentation impacts throughout the ~200 km length of the Watut River. Since then, substantial efforts have been made to improve environmental management, especially waste rock placement and storage and water quality management. While the impacts from the Hidden Valley project appear to be reducing, the saga has heightened concerns by many along the Watut River and across PNG about ongoing impacts from mining.This paper presents the results of an ongoing project in the Morobe Province conducted by the Mineral Policy Institute examining the historical, current and future impacts of mining, including community views, social and environmental impacts and the monitoring and regulation of mining. Overall, there is a clear need to more fully integrate social and environmental issues into life-of-mine planning and go above and beyond regulatory requirements. Much of AucklandÆs transport infrastructure has been developed on surface with little or no consideration of underground options. Current and planned transportation routes are now facing high costs due to land values and increasing environmental resistance to surface development. The option of utilising underground space becomes a feasible investment decision for these links as well as being the only option to develop the rail network within the inner city area. Transportation tunnels offer a quieter, more energy efficient means of getting around with minimal impacts on the surface environment. One of the major impediments to tunnelling is the high construction cost, which is partly related to the risks of encountering unexpected ground conditions and/or the possibility of causing surface ground deformations which could damage structures. The geology of Auckland has had substantial investigation through various studies and projects. The sediments of the East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF) underlie most of the Auckland urban area. It is classified as a soft rock and is a suitable material to tunnel through using either a tunnel boring machine or a roadheader. This paper reviews the limited amount of tunnelling completed in the urban Auckland area, together with the international advancements that have been made in the tunnelling industry. From the known features of the local geology and the problems encountered historically, the likely risks of tunnelling in Auckland are presented and ways in which those risks could be reduced and managed, are discussed. In addition, contractual arrangements between client and contractor are assessed with respect to complicated projects (such as tunnelling), so that the risks can be managed to create efficient infrastructure routes with reduced costs.

Development of a vertically integrated light metals industry in Australia needs to be pursued with vigour, as does the continued development of global strategic alliances through the value adding chain.

"Inrush of water is always an issue, especially for mines located in heavy rainfall areas. Nowadays, mining companies and research institutes have developed many advanced technologies for study and analysis of hydrological processes. In this paper, an advanced method is introduced, which uses the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM) data in the Geographical Information System (GIS) platform to simulate the stream distributions around two specific mines: Super Pit and Griffin coalmine in Western Australia. The impact of this approach is important because it reduces the time and economic cost by creating a high spatial resolution hydrological map in the specific areas. The study identifies the flow path of the run-off water, which helps in adopting a suitable water management plan surrounding the case study mines. The results match with the ground reality. Based on the results, the stream structure around Griffin coalmine is more complicated than that of Super Pit. The bifurcation ratio and drainage density are computed to estimate the subsoil permeability characteristics of the two mines. Commissioning of the Cannington processing plant began in October 1997. The nameplate capacity (of 1.55 million tonnes of ore per annum) was achieved relatively quickly. Since then (like many mines) the operation has strived to increase throughput and improve valuable metal recoveries, to offset declining head grades and lift the value of the operation. The processing plant now has the capability of treating over 3.2 million tonnes of ore per annum and in financial year 2005/06 the combined concentrate production exceeded 600 000 wet tonnes, approximately 80 per cent above concentrate output in the first full year of operation (at the design feed rate). This improved performance was achieved by making changes and additions to each of the major unit processes û primary grinding, flotation, leaching, filtering and paste fill preparation. The changes have included: adding a fines flotation circuit, expanding the grinding circuit, adding a pebble crusher, switching from continuous to batch leaching, building paste conveyors and decommissioning the column flotation cleaning circuits. This paper reviews these changes, outlines the current operating practices and discusses the challenges or opportunities that remain.

The Ernest Henry Mine is currently a copper-gold open pit operation situated in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current throughput of 11 million tonnes per annum; however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in late 2011. The deposit dips at approximately 45¦ and extends for at least another 400 vertical metres below the final 530 m deep pit design. Resource drilling from 2002 until mid 2008 has enabled an Indicated Mineral Resource to be established to 1000 m below surface. Scoping and prefeasibility studies (PFS) have been completed toward determining if this resource is suitable for underground mining and a feasibility study is currently progressing with a sublevel caving (SLC) concept. This paper briefly describes the process by which the SLC method was selected, conclusions regarding the non-selected methods, and then discusses the optimisation process used to derive the mining plan. The key optimisation parameters include the production drive spacing, level spacing, draw strategy, cut-off grade and production rate. Key risks will then be assessed and economic sensitivities studied. Final sensitivities will use Monte Carlo simulations to improve the transparency of the projectÆs risk profile. The feasibility study (FS) began in March 2008 and this paper describes the main optimisation steps at the time of writing and outlines the plan for study completion through to March 2009.

The El Salvador porphyry Cu deposit (26¦ 15Æ Lat S, ~2700 masl) and associated exotic mineralisation is situated at the back-scarp of the late middle Miocene Atacama pediplain in the western Precordillera. New, together with published 40Ar-39Ar data from El Salvador combined with morphologic analysis reveal that the palaeospring plumbing system related to exotic mineralisation at the Damiana exotic Cu deposit and the local geomorphology has not changed fundamentally between the late Eocene and late Miocene. Stable H/D isotope data on supergene alunite from El Salvador indicate an overall increase in dD values (VSMOW) from -74ë at 35.82 ¦ 0.95 Ma to -23ë at ~11 Ma. The transition from strongly to moderately negative deuterium values occurred between ~16 and ~13.5 Ma. Supergene alunite from the El Hueso (3950 masl) sedimentary rock-hosted epithermal deposit ca 35 km SE from El Salvador was dated at 8.19 ¦ 0.01 Ma and yielded a dD value of -25ë. We interpret the increasing deuterium excess as the result of strong evaporation and recycling of meteoric water after ~15 Ma and as indicative for a change in precipitation patterns and climate desiccation. In contrast, the strongly negative dD value for late Eocene supergene alunite points to a more humid climate and an elevation similar to the present. The late Miocene supergene activity at El Hueso is probably related to an uplift of the Precordillera to elevations sufficient for capture of orographically controlled precipitation. It is proposed to consider a new access, mining and hoisting system for underground deposits, as an alternative to the commonly used decline or vertical shaft access. The proposed system offers fundamental improvements in gathering of exploration data, reduction of capital expenditure and significant savings in mine operating costs. The cost reductions are achieved through:superior orebody definition by Supersucker winzing on ore prior to the commencement of capital development; considerable reduction of capital development in waste; full capitalisation on all benefits of a raisebored excavation; introduction of rubber tyred skip and rubber tyred Mine Rapid Response Vehicle; introduction of simplified ore handling system and reduction of underground mobile diesel fleet; and introduction of minimum maintenance shaft concept. The system is applicable to deposits ranging from shallow, low dip angle, narrow vein, high-grade to bigger, massive type vertical mineralisations accessed from the surface, preferably from the bottom of an open pit; it is also suitable as a down dip extension of an existing underground mine. The system is highly conducive to mine automation and emerging trend aimed to increase the ratio of mined metal/mineral to mined waste. It offers substantial reduction in diesel exhaust gas emissions to the mine atmosphere.

The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste landform. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. Although environmental and sustainable development reporting has now become widespread in the Australian mining and minerals processing sector, there remains a great deal of diversity in reporting contents and practice. Moreover concerns remain about the effectiveness of reporting for delivering the companyÆs business case for sustainable development as well as for communicating sustainable development performance to a range of external stakeholders. This paper therefore reviews the status of sustainable development reporting in the Australian minerals processing industry. Pertinent international and national developments are briefly captured, leading to a discussion of the framework for integrating sustainable development reporting with sustainable development management (as proposed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development). This leads to a discussion of the results of a comparative review of sustainable development reports of a cross-section of eight Australian resource companies. Best practice elements are highlighted in regard to reporting on company context, governance, performance and assurance.

For most practical rock engineering purposes, stress versus strength conditions around underground openings for which rock masses fail and their various modes of failure, are reasonably well-understood and predictable. Some rock masses and particular rock types fail slowly and relatively quietly. However, others can fail rapidly, violently and maybe with the ejection of significant broken rock. In some countries and in some mines, the latter style of violent fracturing and failure of the rock mass is referred to as ‘strain bursting’. It can be alarming and extremely hazardous to nearby miners and machines. For such situations, the design and installation of appropriate ground support, to provide a safe work place, can be challenging. At any particular mine site, it’s often generally understood which local rock masses (rock types) are prone to strain bursting. Competent and strong siliceous rocks and some massive sulphides are often the main offenders. While some neighbouring, equally-competent and strong rocks might also fail, they do so more quietly and without ejection. To understand this contrast, a better understanding of the fracturing process is required other than simple and standard strength versus stress considerations. Suites of standard intact rock properties from numerous Australian mines have been used to define and help understand different high-stress failure styles for component intact rock; especially those prone to violent fracturing (strain bursting). Simple considerations of micro-fracturing (defects in the intact material), plus the available energy at failure versus the energy consumed during fracturing, distinguishes between over-stressed and competent rock types that fracture violently and those that don’t. Top outlet sediments from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia have been extracted by a partial extraction method for over 50 elements including gold. The partial extraction results from this low-density survey show discrete coherent anomalies for Au in the vicinity of many of AustraliaÆs known goldfields, and in the vicinity of some minor gold occurrences. In several instances catchment outlet anomalies for Au have been recorded from areas not known to contain significant economic gold. Several large economic goldfields are shown to not produce anomalies in catchment outlet samples. A survey of overbank samples in the Swan Avon catchment of Western Australia at double the sampling density shows that low level anomalies (>1 ppb) can be traced back to source using overbank sediments. Follow-up of one of the Au anomalies at Kent River in previously regarded non-auriferous terrain (western Albany-Fraser Belt) indicates a non-economic, but perhaps geochemically significant, Au anomaly with associated pathfinders including palladium. This may indicate that further exploration of the western part of Albany Fraser Belt for Au is warranted. After conducting laboratory ore sorting testwork on samples of a low grade nickel ore stockpile at Western Areas’ Flying Fox nickel mine, a mobile crushing, screening and ore sorting plant was located adjacent to the stockpile. An initial two month trial of the ore sorter program proved successful and was extended to process the entire Flying Fox low grade stockpile in a further four month campaign. A total of 167 660 t of low grade ore was processed, providing highly upgraded feed trucked 26 km to the Cosmic Boy concentrator. A more than three-fold grade increase was achieved on ore sorter accepts. The moderately upgraded fines that by-passed the mobile ore sorter were also subsequently blended into plant feed. This paper describes the mineralogy of the Flying Fox low grade ore, the mobile ore sorting campaign and provides some commentary on the economic and environmental benefits achieved in the ore sorting campaign. The ore sorting campaign demonstrated the benefits of being able to utilise mobile ore sorting equipment temporarily located adjacent to sub-economic low grade stockpiles in order to effectively treat these stockpiles and produce viable plant feed.CITATION:Parry, A and Fitzmaurice, C, 2018. The CSIRU Division of Mineral Engineering is developing various techniques for the on-line determination of moisture in coal and coke, and some instruments are now commercially available. These techniques permit accurate and rapid determination of moisture in materials directly on conveyor belts or in bins. The most promising techniques for direct on-belt measurement of moisture in coal are capacitance and microwave transmission. A non-contacting under-belt capacitance and gamma-ray backscatter technique has determined moisture in coal to better than 0.5 wt'/. in field tests at BHP Stockton Borehole Colliery, NSW. Mineral Control Instrumentation Pty Ltd have been licensed to manufacture the capacitance gauges and have installed five commercial units in the coal industry and other industries. Microwave transmission techniques have an advantage over the under-belt capacitance technique in that they are not sensitive to vertical segregation of moisture in coal on the conveyor belt. A laboratory prototype of a microwave transmission gauge has been constructed and tested. Microwave techniques, based on a measurement of attenuation and phase shift, are under development and are expected to be field tested in 1987. These new techniques will enable a wide range of thickness changes to be accommodated. Capacitance and microwave transmission methods are unsuitable for materials of high electrical conductivity, such as coke. CSIRO is therefore developing a fast neutron and gamma-ray transmission technique, which is proving very accurate in laboratory tests. This technique overcomes many of the limitations of thermal neutron moisture gauges and it is expected to be field tested in 1987.

Pre-splitting for smooth highwall formation is conducted in around 75 per cent of surface coal operations within Australia. The CMTE (Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment) in conjunction with BHPAC (BHP Australia Coal) initiated a project to look at pre-splitting and to investigate the notching of blastholes for fracture plane control. The notching was specifically for pre-split initiation and also for discing of the toe of the production holes to minimise coal loss from the top of the coal seam. There are currently a number of factors which are driving the introduction of new pre-splitting technologies and products. The first is the ever increasing bench height being employed in strip mines which require a higher quality wall with less blast damage to maintain stability. Currently depths of 55 metres are common place with depths of 70 - 80 metres fast approaching. The second factor is the introduction of new technologies or methods which require a high quality highwall produced, eg highwall mining. This paper discusses the current state-of-the-art in pre-splitting and the main issues facing successful pre-splitting in the future. The use of a blasthole notching technology to promote fracturing along the pre-split line is also analysed. The review indicates that most pre-splitting challenges in the future can be addressed through better use and developments of current drill and blast technology. It is also concluded that a blasthole notching technique may find niche applications in improving final walls within a surface coal mine, especially where a high quality wall is required. The notched blasthole method may also allow pre-splitting in ground conditions and adverse rock structure which currently cannot be pre-split by existing technology.

Mine geology is understood through synthesising large amounts of structural, lithological, geochemical and geophysical data derived from the original topographic surface, drilling and surfaces exposed and removed during open cut and underground excavations. Computer- generated 3D geological models of any mine environment need to incorporate large amounts of information but also should be regularly updated with typically frequent influxes of new data. Geologists with the local knowledge should also be involved in the model construction, enhancement and interpretation, placing ease-of-use functionality high on modelling software requirements. Implicit-style modelling is a fast-growing area of 3D geological software development where interpolated surfaces such as lithology boundaries and bedding orientations are defined mathematically as functions rather than explicitly through coordinate meshes. The functions are constrained only by the data and not by an artificially imposed grid; therefore, implicit 3D modelling can process a lot of information quickly and routinely operate on original data (such as observed contacts and structural data) rather than on evolved iterations and interpretations. 3D mine geology models can be readily updated with new data, which can be automatically reprocessed to test ideas in near-real time. Implicit, function-based 3D modelling software has been applied to the Globe-Progress mine in West Coast, New Zealand. This structurally- hosted gold mine has some geometrical conundrums that are in part being resolved as excavation of the open pit proceeds. The relationship of the Globe-Progress ore shoots to hanging wall and footwall structure is still not fully understood, however, and 3D geological modelling is assisting with visualisation and testing of structural hypotheses. The modelling is also capable of predicting areas of bedding defect slope failure in yet-to-be excavated parts of the mine.

In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. At the Waikato North Head Ironsand operation, NZ Steel Mining Ltd is using a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system to excavate Titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators with a two level shiftable bench conveyor and common trunk conveyor to deliver the material to a processing plant. The system was commissioned in November 1984 and has proved itself to be a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. Techniques of handling high sand faces have been developed and the conveyor layouts are going through a process of change to cope with the variable geo technical conditions and remain within: the characteristics of the excavators. The safety requirements for operating the system have been of a high standard and the experience has increased the confidence of the Company and the Mines Department Inspector's, for the first Bucket Wheel Excavator Mining system in New Zealand.
