By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

Gas-metal heterogeneous reactions and zone-lrelting were sinultarneously employed to produce several high-purity irons with low interstitial contents in a levitating- zone melter. Successive zone-tneltitzg pusses were made in carious sequences of atmospheves which included prepuvified tank hy-drogeta, water vapor hydrogen, palladiuril-purified hydrogen, and vacuunm of 2 x 10-6 Torr. Different irons ranging in purity from 99.89 to 99.996 pct with residual curbon contents of 17, 8 to 10, and 3 to 5 ppm have been Drepared. No measuvable gradient in the residual carbon content was observed along the entire zone-melted length (6-10 in.) in I-ilz.-diameter bars. The absence of a carbon-concentration gradient in the solid indicates an apparent distvihution coefficient of 1, an unusual condition. Internal friction, solid-state extraction, and hot-hardness results indicate that the level of mobile carbon in a iron depends on the gas-metal heterogeneous reactions employed. Purification under an oxidizing atmosphere resulted in the immobilization of nearly all of the carbon present at leuels of 10 ppm or less. Continuation of purification in a reducing atmosphere veturued the carbon to a state of mobility which was aguin reversed by further purification in all oxidizing atmosphere. The immobilization of curbon at "vesidual levels " is believed to be associated with a strong interaction between carbon and oxygen atoms. frons with low carbon and nitrogen contetzts which did not exhibit a hot-hardness peak were produced after zone ynelting in vacuum. CARBON, nitrogen, and oxygen have strong and well-known effects on many properties of iron. These effects persist even at concentrations of 5 to 20 ppm. The intent of the present investigation was to establish procedures for the preparation of high-purity iron with concentrations of these elements in the range of 5 to 20 ppm and lower. The results reported here deal with the procedures employed to prepare high-purity iron, and with observations on the behavior of certain elements at "residual levels": particularly carbon. The details of the (levitating) zone melter in which the final purification steps are performed and the necessary control of the pertinent solidification variables have been described previously.1,2 MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES Commercial electrolytic iron was induction vacuum-melted and cast into 30-lb ingots. Melt additions and ingot analyses for carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen are noted in Table I. All ingots were melted in stabilized zirconia crucibles conditioned with one iron wash heat. Middle sections of the ingots were forged to 1-1/4-in. rounds, machined to 1-in.-diameter bars, then cut to 36-in. lengths. The zone-melting operations were performed on six iron bars (A to F) at a freezing velocity of 2 in. per hr with the freezing interface rotating2 at 200, 300, or 400 rpm. Liquid zones were passed through the bars in various sequences of atmospheres, Table 11, including prepurified tank H2, palladium-purified Hz, wet H2, and system vacuum of 2 x 1018 Torr. Wet-Hz atmospheres were obtained by bubbling palladium-purified Hz through water exhibiting a resistance of 3 megohms. This water was heated with a platinum-immersion heater and was degassed prior to use. Zone melting in a wet-HZ atmosphere resulted in oxidation of the elements which are oxi-dizable with respect to iron. Fine oxide particles were observed on the surface of the liquid zone, and were encased in the bar surface with the passage of the molten zone. Between each zone pass, the surface of the bar was removed by filing and deep etching; this was continued until the oxide formation ceased. The filings were magnetically separated and the residues analyzed by optical spectroscopy. These were especially high in silicon and manganese. Samples were removed from the iron bars, with few exceptions, following each zone-melting operation. A 0.08-in.-thick disc was cut with an Al2O3 cut-off wheel at a point 1/2 in. above the beginning of freezing. BERYLLIUM has certain properties such as low density, high hardness, good corrosion resistance, low thermal expansion and fairly good electrical conductivity, which would indicate that it, is worthy of consideration as an ingredient of light alloys. It was not until recently, however, that beryllium could be produced with sufficient ease to encourage research along this line. The production of beryllium by electrolysis from a fluoride bath has now developed to the stage where it could be used commercially if there were sufficient demand for the element. Claims made in certain newspapers and technical articles in regard to the strength and corrosion resistance of the aluminum-beryllium alloys are not justified by experimental results. Moreover, beryllium is an expensive metal ($200 a pound at the time this work was done) and, on account of the nature of its ore and the consequent difficulty of its extraction, it will in all probability continue to be a relatively expensive metal, although the cost would undoubtedly be a great deal less than $200 a pound if the metal were produced on a large scale. It seemed, therefore, that low-beryllium alloys offered the greater commercial possibilities except for very special purposes. It was partly for this reason that in the present work emphasis has been placed on beryllium alloys of low beryllium content.

While American scientific literature contains much information upon geologic conditions controlling the production of oil in Rumania, copper in Chile, and other fuel and metallic resources in many foreign countries, it is singularly lacking in data about the nonmetallics outside of the United States. Thus, though the United States is the outstanding market for European high-quality refined kaolin, and for the chinaware, porcelain, and other products of the European ceramics industries, American literature contains only the briefest references to the deposits from which the raw kaolin utilized is obtained. To the writer, to whom has come in the past year the opportunity of visiting a number of these deposits personally, they have proved of extreme interest both commercially and geologically. It is the latter phase that is discussed in this paper. The older and now largely crystalline rock areas of France, Germany, and other parts of western Europe contain numerous pegmatite dikes of which the upper portions have been subjected to surface weathering and kaolinization in much the same way as those of the eastern portion of the United States. Like the latter, the European pegmatite kaolins have long been known for their freedom from iron and other impurities offensive to the china and porcelain manufacturer. Unfortunately, they are also, like the American deposits, individually of small size and noted for their high costs of production. Deposits of sedimentary clay similar in many respects to the high-quality sedimentary kaolins of Georgia and South Carolina are known and worked, notably in southern Germany and in the Newton Abbott district of Devon and Dorset in England. In general, their relationship to the parent rock from which they were derived is more evident than in the United States and the individual deposits are of smaller areal extent and less regular in outline. While these deposits are of considerable economic importance they did not, because of their similarity to deposits in America, attract and hold the interest of the writer to the extent that several other types of deposits did. CUSHMAN,* Washington, D. C.:-I have been much interested in Mr. Shimer's valuable contribution. The apparent fact that the oxides of certain metals which are not reduced by hydrogen per se, are reducible when the oxides are dissolved in iron in small quantity, is brought out for the first time, and is worthy of the careful attention of investigators. The Ledebur method has been subjected to considerable criticism, owing to the alleged fact that it did not measure the oxygen combined with impurities. Personally I have found the method extremely helpful in spite of the minute quantities of oxygen with which it deals. Mr. Shinier points out that the highest oxygen he obtained by over-blowing was 0.074 per cent., while the minimum quantity in a properly finished steel was in the neighborhood of 0.02 per cent. The Ledebur method is used as a constant check on the quality of heats made in practice under my direction. In dealing with a very pure commercial iron, we should expect to find and would find difficulty in galvanizing sheets made from a heat running 0.07 per cent. oxygen. In fact, we do not like to have the oxygen rise above 0.03 per cent. I am inclined to agree with the author that excessive oxygen leaves a bath of metal in a very short time, but nevertheless I believe it takes only a very little combined oxygen to begin to make its presence felt in the pickling and galvanizing department, when sheet metal is the product manufactured. As Mr. Shimer points out, the higher the carbon, the lower the oxygen danger, and it is partly for this reason that the manufacture of carbon-free metal in the open-hearth furnace has to be so very carefully watched and controlled from the furnace through to the finished product. It is quite possible that, there is a critical temperature of dissociation between iron and oxygen, although the critical points may vary in baths of different carbon content. Unfortunately, the accurate determination of the temperature of a molten bath at the time of pouring or teeming is a very difficult matter. ABRASIVES include the substances, natural or artificial, that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean or otherwise remove solid material, usually by rubbing action but also by impact (sandblasting, for example). They do not include abrasive tools-for instance, lathe tools and files-or polishing agents such as waxes, which act by filling pores. Detergents and cleaners whose action is chemical rather than physical are omitted although some chemical action polishes and cleaners may also contain solid abrasives; for example, many metal polishes. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The most important physical properties of materials that qualify them for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or brittleness), grain shape and size, character of fracture or cleavage, purity or uniformity. For making bonded grain abrasives such as grinding wheels, additional important factors are stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one single property is paramount for any use. For some uses extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits; for others, the factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly under use, to develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn-for example, in garnet for sandpaper, neither highly cleavable or friable grains nor extremely tough grains

On the basis of metallographic analysis, incipient melting data, thermal analysis work, and X-ray diffraction, phase relationships in the 0 to 50 atomic pct Cr region were carefully resolved. Phase relationships in the 50 to 100 atomic pct region were outlined. A single intermediate phase, ZrCr,, was established in the system. A eutectic and a eutectoid were found in the zirconium-rich region of the system, while a eutectic was located in the chromium-rich region. Limited solubility of chromium in both a and a zirconium was observed. THIS is another in a series of papers on zirconium-base binary phase diagrams based on a program sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. The Zr-Sn,' Zr-Si,' and Zr-Mo and Zr-W" systems have already been published. Previous work on the Zr-Cr system includes a partial diagram by Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' and a complete diagram by McQuillan." The phase relationships reported by these authors were determined with magnesium-reduced zirconium, whereas those reported herein are based on iodide metal. Some X-ray work on the intermediate phase in this system was also reported by Hayes et al., as well as by Wallbaum.' Comparisons with these data are made in the appropriate sections. Thermal analysis, metallographic and incipient melting techniques were employed to accurately resolve phase relationships in the 0 to 50 atomic pct Cr region, while the remainder of the diagram is outlined on a basis of cast structures and thermal analysis. A description and analyses of the metals used in the preparation of alloys for this study are included in Table I. A "low-hafnium" zirconium crystal bar (Westinghouse "Grade 3") was used. This material was produced by the decomposition of a volatile iodide onto a hot zirconium filament. The as-received crystal bar was coated with corrosion product from a standard autoclave test by which its grade designation is determined. A sand-blasting and subsequent HF-HNO, pickling treatment was employed to remove this contamination. The bars were cold-rolled to approximately 1/32-in. sheet, pickled again, sheared to 1/4-in. squares, washed with acetone, and stored for use. Ingot chromium metal from National Research Corp. and electrolytic chromium flakes from Johnson, Matthey and Co., Ltd., were available as alloy additions. The ingot chromium was received in granular form. The large granules were sized by crushing, treated for iron removal, rinsed with acetone, and stored. The flakes were broken to approximately 1/8 in. with mortar and pestle, cleaned with acetone, and stored for charging. Experimental Procedure A nonconsumable electrode arc furnace identical to that described by Hansen, Kessler, and McPher-son,' was used in this work. A 400 amp dc welding generator was the source of power. To insure homogeneity, ingots were melted in a water-cooled spun copper crucible, a total of four times without opening the furnace. No difficulties were encountered in the preparation of these binary alloys. Analyzed chromium contents were found to agree very well with the intended content. Melts of pure zirconium were interspersed in the course of preparing the alloys and their hardness was measured to keep a constant check on the melting technique. Vycor and quartz bulbs were used to contain the samples for isothermal annealing treatments. Vycor bulbs were employed for temperatures up to 110O°C, while quartz was used above this temperature. For treatments up to 950°C the bulbs were evacuated before sealing, but for higher temperatures a partial pressure of argon was admitted to the

IN 1939 Bitter and Kaufmann1 suggested that iron, precipitating from a copper-rich, Cu-Fe solid solution, appears initially as coherent particles of r-Fe which transform to the body-centered-cubic form of iron when the alloy is cold worked. Since then there has been considerable discussion, supported only by indirect evidence, regarding the validity of the concept. For example, Reekie, Hutchison, and Hether-ington2 interpreted the changes in electrical resistance accompanying the aging of Cu-Fe specimens in terms of a coherent 7-Fe precipitate which transformed to the incoherent a-phase during long aging or cold working. Greninger- ound that Cu-Fe alloys which had been water quenched from 1050" and then held at 650°C for 3 hr changed from weakly to strongly ferromagnetic as the aged wire was subsequently cold worked. He also found diffraction lines corresponding to body-centered-cubic iron in Debye-Scherrer patterns given by aged and worked specimens but lines corresponding to only one face-centered-cubic phase in specimens which had been aged but not worked. Knoppwost,' and later Cech and Turnbull,5 found that aged Cu-Fe specimens showed a slight increase in ferromagnet-ism after they had be? cooled in liquid nitrogen. Very recently Denney6 followed the kinetics of the precipitation reaction as indicated by the saturation magnetization, hardness, and diffuse X-ray effects. The experimental results reported by all of the authors mentioned above are readily explained in terms of the Bitter and Kaufmann concept. However, most of the evidence is indirect when used to define the structural changes involved. It was the aim of the present investigation to determine the mechanism of precipitation of iron from a Cu-Fe solid solution in the light of available published information and with additional new and more direct experimental data. Experimental Method At 1060°C copper will contain up to 3 atomic pct Fe in equilibrium solid solution.7 The solvus slopes rapidly toward lower iron concentration, so that at 600°C only about 0.5 pct Fe remains in solution at equilibrium. Below the eutectoid temperature (850°C), the iron-rich phase in equilibrium with the copper-rich solid solution consists of body-centered-cubic a-Fe. Above 850 °C the equilibrium iron-rich phase is face-centered-cubic r-Fe. The alloy to be studied was made by melting electrolytic iron and OFHC copper by induction under vacuum in an Alundum-lined crucible. The metal was held molten for about 5 min, after which time the power was turned off and the crucible was tipped about 70" to promote directional solidification. The resulting ingot, containing 2.5 wt pct Fe by analysis, was clean, large grained, and free of gross segregation. Slices % in. thick were cut from the ingot, rolled to 1/8 in. in thickness, homogenized in hydrogen at 1060°C for 24 hr and, finally, quenched in cold water. Specimens for all subsequent tests were made from these slices. Squares measuring about 1 cm on a side were cut from the slices to make specimens for studying hardness and microstructure. Wires (0.020 in.) for the Debye-Scherrer survey were drawn from 1/8 in. sq rods which had been cut from the homogenized slices. In an earlier paper, Ehrenburg and Watson1 published the develop ment for a potential function by which it is possible to obtain the electric potential at points on the surface of the ground when a current I passes between two electrodes and the subsoil is composed of parallel, homogeneous layers. In view of the continued interest in the resistivity method of electrical prospecting, the author has considered it desirable to publish the results of a number of theoretical studies making use of this potential function, and also the results of a considerable number of tests with models designed to show the soundness of the mathematical theory. It is hoped that these results will prove how erroneous the various empirical rules for depth determination may be. It has always seemed puzzling to the author that one can find, in papers published comparatively recently, statements upholding empirical rules for depth determination, and attributing most of the irregularities of resistivity curves to vertical discontinuities in resistivity in the subsoil. It would indeed be fortunate for the geophysical investigator if such a simple rule held. However, numerous investigators have proved both theoretically and by the success of their field work that such a rule does not hold, even by a "rough approximation" in many cases. On the other hand, as is shown in the development to follow, if the underground conditions are favorable it is possible for such empirical rules to give a satisfactory depth determination. Authors should be more careful about making such sweeping statements about the accuracy of these empirical rules because the relative simplicity of the field work places the method in the hands of any interested experimenter, and he is likely to become completely disgusted with the method after he has made several obviously wrong interpretations by empirical rules. The area for which oil and gas developments in South Texas are reported for 1940 in this paper covers the same counties that were included in the reports for 1938 and 1939, with the addition of LaSalle County. LaSalle County is includcd in the Laredo district of South Texas, which totals seven counties for that district. The Corpus Christi district remains the same, with nine counties. The two districts together comprise what is known as the South Texas area for this report. Continued exploration along established trends and beyond proven field limits during 1940 provided South Texas with new fields and new producing levels at a rate of discovery fairly comparable with the high records set during recent years. The wells drilled in the counties within this district (including LaSalle) numbered 1656, approximately 8 per cent below the 1801 figure of last year. However, rank wildcats totaIed 336, an increase of 17.5 per cent compared to the 286 drilled in 1939. Therefore, since new field discoveries numbered 25 in 1940 against 29 in 1939, the rate of new field discoveries in 1940, based upon rank wildcats drilled, was I/I3.4 while that of 1939 was I/9.86, which shows a decrease of about 25 per cent in the rate of new fields. The rank wildcat tests in 1940 gave the following results: 18 produced oil, 4 produced distillate with gas, 3 produced. only gas, and 3r1 were dry holes (Table 5). Of the 1320 tests drilled in already proven fields or as extensions to pro+en areas (representing a decline of 12.8 per cent from last year's total of 1515 tests), 1048 produced oil or distillate, 60 produced gas and 212 were dry holes (Table 4). Of the producers, 50 found new sands or crude-in-distillate-sands in existing fields. Among the several fields subjected to extensive development were: Colorado, Jim Hogg County; East White Point, San Patricio and Nueces County; Rincon and Sun, Starr County; Glen, Webb and Zapata Counties; Wade City and Orange Grove, Jim Wells County; Stratton and South Clara Driscoll, Nueces County, and Aransas Pass, San Patricio and Aransas Counties. The development of important crude reserves on structures formerly considered primarily distillate fields has probably been the most important phase of the year's operations in South Texas. The Rincon, Stratton, Agua Dulce, Wade City, Odem and Robston fields provided the new crude sand discoveries. At some places crude production was opened by exploratory wells that found new sand horizons; in others by flank wells that found already discovered distillate sands sufficiently low to provide crude production. Rincon, Starr County, with its multiple sands, is now believed to be one of South Texas' largest crude-oil reserves. Offshore drilling showed important results during the year, including the discovery of two new submerged fields and the extension of the East White Point field into offshore Nueces County. THE alloys formed by the addition of nickel to iron by convelltional metallurgical procedures show physical properties that differ widely from those of the individual metals. The effect of alloying on the mechanical properties is most pronounced in alloys containing between 15 and 25 per cent nickel. The tensile strength of an alloy containing, for example, 20 per cent nickel and 80 per cent iron (with 0.06 per cent carbon), in an annealed condition, is above 150,000 lb. per sq. in.? owing to a martensitic type of transformation, as compared with about 50,000 lb. per sq. in. for pure iron in the same condition. The object of this work was to determine whether the same beneficial alloying effect could be obtained in alloys of iron and nickel prepared by powder metallurgy technique. PROCEDURE Bars and pellets for tension and compression tests, respectively, were made. Two groups of specimens were prepared: (I) by cold-pressing the powders and sintering; (2) by cold-pressing the powders, sintering, repressing and resintering. Raw Materials Nickel powder supplied by Metals Disintegrating co., marked MD-151, was used. A typical analysis of this powder was as follows: sulphur, 0.040 per cent; copper, 0.18; iron, 0.23; manganese, 0.002; magnesium, 0.001 5 ; lead, 0.035; tin, 0.025 ; silicon, 0.08; chromium, 0.008. Electrolytic iron powder supplied by Plastic Metals Inc. was used. A representative chemical analysis for impurities other than gases, supplied by the vendor, gave the following results: carbon, 0.005 per cent; manganese, 0.002; silicon, 0.003; phosphorus, 0.001; sulphur, 0.004; nickel, 0.008. The fractions from these powders passing a 3 2 5-mesh sieve were reduced in hydrogen at 600°C. for one hour, to clean the surfaces of the particles. The reduced powders, slightly caked, were ground in a mortar and screened again through a 325- mesh sieve. Mixing The proper proportions of the powders were mixed overnight on rolls, in glass jars fitted with iron-wire baffles to break aggregates of particles that might form. Pressing All specimens were compacted on hydraulic presses. The pellets were compacted in a cylindrical die, ½ in. diameter. The ratio of thickness to the diameter of the pellets was maintained as nearly as possible at 0.9, as specifed for standard short compression pieces. AS these annual occasions in honor of Henry Marion Howe continue through the years: there is progressively less likelihood that the lecturer will have had personal knowledge of Dr. Howe. The present speaker is one of those who unfortunately had no opportunity to come under the inspiring presence of this great metallurgist. A review of Howe's work shows it to cover a comprehensive range of interests and to evidence an impressive richness of detail. Not only was Howe at home in the laboratory, but he was familiar with the processes of iron and steel making and had a real understanding of them. His writings include much that is descriptive of processes with a wealth of material that is becoming of increasing historical value. He recorded his studies of the theoretical aspects of processes and published at least two process classifications, one in 1890 that was lengthy and somewhat theoretical, and a second in 1906 that was more of a practical listing. Wide as Howe's field of interest was, it is significant of the circumstances of his time that he gave- little consideration to raw materials or to their effect on iron and steel making processes. In 1933, Waterhouse, Howe lecturer for that year, presented a descriptive summary of the major steel making processes, and in 1946 Joseph discussed the blast furnace process. Otherwise Howe lectures have not dealt with processes as major subjects. In today's lecture, with no effort to describe the mechanical arrangements of iron and steel making facilities, it is proposed to examine the essential technological elements of the processes, to explore the inter-relation of these elements, and particularly to seek recognition and understanding of those factors which determine why certain processes are or are not used. The discussion of this lecture will deal with the major well-known large tonnage processes, with only such attention to processes of minor tonnage and special character as may be warranted for explanation by contrast. Subject to the errors of generalization and the shortcomings of condensation involved in presentation limited to a single hour, it is proposed to examine broadly but intensively those operations which convert raw materials into steel. It is an innovation for a Howe lecturer to discuss the raw materials of the iron and steel industry, but the changing circumstances of passing years intensify the influence of raw materials on processes and require the metallurgist to be alert for the process adjustments that may become advisable or mandatory. For a half century the metallurgical processing of iron and steel has followed a surprisingly straight path, but this does not necessarily mean that there are no curves in the road ahead. Granules are used primarily as roofing material. From the earliest times, man has been faced with the basic problem of providing protection for himself, his family, and his property against the ravages of the weather. Basically, this problem is no different today than in the past, except that today the trend is to demand shelter which is also colorful and distinctive. There has been a gradual evolution from the thatched roof to the modem ranchstyle home. In his search for a more permanent and more attractive roof, the home owner has utilized many mineral materials. All granules, whether slate or colored granules, are referred to by the asphalt roofing industry as "Slate Granules." Early Roofing Materials The development of mineral roofing in the United States followed two trends: first, the slate industry, and second, the bituminous products. The early colonists were familiar with slab slate construction from Europe and it was natural for them to continue with this type of roofing. As early as 1780, the forerunners of the present bituminous products were finding favor. Those early products consisted of saturating burlap or similar material with crude tar or pitch. This type of roofing was soon improved by dusting a variety of materials on the surface of the roofing to prevent adhesion while in rolls. Such factors as fire resistance and protection from the actinic rays of the sun soon followed. This started the general pattern which is still followed today, that is, saturating felt materials and supplying a uniform grade of crushed mineral to the surface. In commercial and public buildings, metal roofs found early favor. The attractive green color of verdigris-coated copper became a symbol of churches and institutions of learning. Aluminum roofing has become economical for large structures and is finding limited popularity in rural areas. Tile, asbestos, and cement materials, being weather resistant, found early acclaim and are still popular. Today, by far the most widely used roofing materials in the United States are asphalt products. Two important characteristics-economy and weatherability-account for their popularity. Influence of Building Trends on Roofing The postwar building boom in 1947 had many attractive features for the American people. The ranch-style one story type of home seemed well suited for suburban developments which sprang up in such profusion. As the roof in modern home construction is one of the most conspicuous aspects of its architecture, the home owner could now express his tastes not only in paint and landscaping, but could also select an attractive and harmonious roof color. Variety of Minerals Used Many naturally occurring minerals are used today in the roofing industry. THE present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semi-killed as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. ADDING SULPHUR AS A SULPHITE These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the steel by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which-upon decomposition-forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig, I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig, 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast-that is, before rolling and were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. 2 shows that the sulphide inclusions are more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. INTRODUCTION As part of a general project to simulate a concentrator, the Brenda Mines Limited secondary crushing plant, located near Peachland, B. C., was sampled during the summer/winter of 1975 and during the summer of 1978 to develop a digital crushing plant simulator specific to the Brenda operation. The purpose of this simulator was to study the influence of manipulable process variables on important responses, to permit study of alternative circuit configurations if desired and to perform off-line optimization. This chapter describes the methodology employed to develop the simulator (1,2) along with typical applications thereof. SECONDARY CRUSHING PLANT FLOWSHEET Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the Brenda Mines Ltd. secondary crushing plant circuit. The 41,000 tonne coarse ore stockpile(a) is -17.8 cm oversize (3B belt) from two 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (not shown). The screens are fed by 2 conveyor belts operated in series with two 198 cm apron feeders that handle discharge from a 152 cm x 226 cm primary gyratory crusher(520 KW). The primary crusher (not shown) treats up to 2725 tonne/hr of run of mine ore. Minus 1.9 cm undersize from the primary screens (#19 belt), referred to as the primary fines, joins secondary screen undersize (#18 belt) for conveyance to fine ore bins (not shown). Feed from the coarse ore stockpile is transferred by means of vibrating feeders and two 120 cm conveyors (#6 and #7) to transfer belts #8 and #9 (Figure 1). The belts feed two secondary 2.1 m standard heavy duty cone crushers (bl and b2). Each crusher is equipped with a modified coarse mantle liner and a standard coarse bowl liner. Mantle throw is 9.2 cm; nominal close side set is 3.2 cm. Crusher .countershafts (443 rpm) are driven by single 260 KW synchronous motors (710 rpm). Discharge from the secondary cone crushers joins discharge from four 2.1 m tertiary heavy duty shorthead cone crushers (fl, f2, f3 and f4). With the exception of the cavity (modified medium mantle liner and standard coarse bowl liner; close side set is nominal .84 cm) and motor (224 KW), these machines are similar to the secondary crushers. The combined discharge is transferred from a 183 cm conveyor to #14 belt which empties into a 1452 tonne secondary screen surge bin (c). Vibrating feeders beneath the bins feed five 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (dl, d2, d3, d4 and d5) sloped at 200 from the horizontal. The effects of ternary and quaternary additions of aluminum, oxygen, and carbon on the mechanical properties of high-purity titanium-molybdenum alloys were studied for several microstructural conditions. Heat treatments were designed to produce 1) ß-quenched, 2) equiaxed ß) transformed (acicular) and 4) stabilized -P microstructures. Tension, impact, and hardness tests were performed. Transformations from the ß phase were followed by hardness measurements and metallography. The ß-to-w transformation was slowed by aluminum additions; carbon and oxygen additions increased the transformation rate. In addition to solid-solution strengthening, these solutes may increase or decrease strength by altering the /3 transformation kinetics. Aluminum additions promote the formation of strain-induced martensite, and lower yield strengths at compositions near 12 pct molybdenum.. a-P alloys are more ductile with equiaxed than with transformed microstructures. High strength levels can be reached by aging in many cases. Strength levels of the aged specimens usually are lowered slightly by straining prior to aging. ALLOYS of molybdenum with titanium form an iso-morphous alloy system which has been the subject of several investigations. Additions of substitu-tional and interstitial -stabilizing elements provide means of improving mechanical strength and con- trolling the heat-treatment response of the binary alloys. The work reported here forms a part of a continued study of the effects of microstructure on the mechanical properties of high-purity titanium alloys. Previous papers have considered the various binary alloys (Ti-Mo, Ti-Al, Ti-C, and Ti-0) that form the bases for the ternary and quaternary alloys included here. The compositions were selected to correspond with the previous binary alloys. Further, the high purity of the alloying components was maintained, so that direct comparisons with earlier work can be made. The total research program included a large number of compositional, microstructural, and testing variables. The data reported here have been selected to provide a reasonably complete and representative summary of the results. The reader is referred to the original Air Force Report for a complete tabulation of the results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All the alloys used in this work were prepared from high-purity electrolytic titanium produced by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A typical furnished analysis showed the following impurities in wt pct, balance This analysis is equivalent to that of iodide-refined titanium. In addition, hardness, tensile, and impact tests made using unalloyed electrolytic titanium showed it to have properties equivalent to those obtained with iodide titanium and suitable for these studies of high-purity base alloys.
