INTRODUCTION The composition of water used in the flotation process has always been of primary interest to the flotation metallurgist. It is by alteration of the chemistry of the water introduced to the process that flotation separation is effected. In only a few cases has it been necessary to treat available water prior to use in the process. In the past, flotation tailings were treated for the removal of solids via the tailings dam and water decanted from the dam was either recirculated to the process or discharged to the surface water system. The choice of recirculation or discharge was based upon water availability, effect of recycle water on the process, and economic considerations. The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 have charged the United States Environmental Protection Agency with establishing effluent limitations from point sources of discharge into the navigable water of the United States. A detailed study, sponsored by EPA, of the water of ore processing plants took place in 1974 and 1975 and guidelines for these plants will presumably have been published by the time this paper has been presented(1). The action of many of the individual states preceded the EPA in this attempt to regulate the quality of the water discharged from industrial point sources. Even with recycle of tailings water, some water is discharged from tailings dams into the substrata and at least one state is currently preparing guidelines for the quality of water discharged into the substrata.

WHEN the A.I.M.E. was formed 75 years ago the bituminous coal industry was in its swaddling clothes, although it had been operating for more than a century and coal was being mined in every state now producing it, and its output had long passed that of anthracite. In 18/1, the value of bituminous coal was about seventy per cent of the value of all metals produced and more than one fifth of the value of all products of mines, both metallic and nonmetallic.[1a] While many of the operating mines then shipped by rail, most of the development was along waterways, although the canal era of transportation was nearly at its end. Coal mining is a heavy industry and one of the best measures of its progress is its output throughout the period. Fig. 1 shows this graphically from 1800 to 1945. From 1870 to 1910, the production-which is very nearly the consumption-almost doubled every decade, a most amazing growth. In 1918, in World War I, a peak was reached and a decline began, which ended in 1932. A gradual recovery then started, interrupted in 1938 but culminating in the record output of 1944, when, owing to World War II, a tonnage of 619,576,000 was produced. It is evident that the forces leading to the continuous increase ending in 1918 have spent themselves and that only unusual conditions will require so large a production again. The effectiveness of digital computing machines in making technical calculations depends on how well the work is arranged to utilize the capability of the machines. This note presents a particularly useful way of calculating hydrocarbon vapor-li.quid equilibrium in the flash vaporization (or condensation) system. The method is well suited to sequence-controlled computing equipment. It is not limited to equilibrium calculations and may be used for solution of most implicit equations in one variable. INTRODUCTION There is increasing interest in the use of electronic digital computers in research and engineering calculations. This is a fortunate and inevitable trend in view of both the increasingly extensive numerical work which is becoming a routine part of many daily production operations and growing demand for the overwhelming amounts of calculations required by newly developed numerical methods for solving heretofore unsolved problems. Machines are in many ways ideally suited to the task but of necessity present certain difficulties. for a particular poblem to be solved must often be formulated quite differently from the way it would be arranged for manual solution. This is done in order to take advantage of the inherent speed and precision of electronic computers and at the same time to limit the need for number storage to the capacity of the machine. Therefore, this note is submitted to present a general and quite powerful method of finding solutions of the frequently encountered implicit equation: F(x,y1,y2,...ya)=0.......(1) where the root, x, is to be found for a given set of y1, ... yn.. The procedure is well suited for use with computing machines, for it usually requires but little storage or programming beyond that necessary to evaluate F. HYDROCARBON EQUILIBRIUM The method is described in terms of the problem it was designed to solve, i.e., the calculation of hydrocarbon vapor-liquid equilibrium in flash vaporization. TO determine the optimum inside dimension of an airshaft, it is necessary to strike the proper balance between the cost of power for air friction and turbulence losses within the airshaft, on the one hand, and the cost of sinking the airshaft, on the other. An airshaft larger than necessary is extravagant because the increased amortization rate exceeds the reduction in power cost. Conversely, an airshaft smaller than is needed wastes more power than can be justified by the corresponding reduction in amortization rate. The airshaft power is a function of the air volume Q cu. ft. per min. and the air- pressure drop p in. water gauge across the airshaft The airshaft pressure drop is calculated by the formula: [ ] wherein R is the air-friction coefficient for the portion of the airshaft 1 ft. deep, 0 ft. in perimeter and A sq. ft. in area, when passing an air volume of Q cu. ft. per minute. THE heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds InBi, In2Bi, and TIBi2 have been determined by metal solution calorimetry with bismuth as solvent. The published information on the thermody-namic properties of these compounds is limited. The structure of the compound InBi (mp, 383°K) is tetragonal of the PbO (B10) type.1 The compounds In2Bi (mp, 362°K) and TIBi2 (mp of highest-melting composition, 486°K) are now believed to have structures of the NizIn (B8) type273 and not the A1B2 (C32) structures reported earlier.4, 5 The compounds In2Bi and TIBi2 have limited homogeneity ranges at room temperature, while the compound InBi has no detectable homogeneity range.' Samples of the compounds were prepared from 99.99 pet Bi (Mallinckrodt Chemical Works), 99.999 pet in (American Smelting and Refining Co.), and 99.99 pet Tl (Amend Drug and Chemical Co.) by melting the components in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes. The compounds InBi and in2Bi were of the stoichiometric compositions. The compound TIBi2 contained 40 pet T1; this composition was chosen because at room temperature the alloy of stoichiometric composition does not lie within the homogeneity range.' The melts were held approximately 50°C above the liquidus for 8 hr and then quenched into iced brine. The samples were homogenized for 48 hr at temperatures 20°C below the temperature of complete solidification. Metallographic examination of sections taken from the center and the ends of the ingots did not reveal second phases or segregation . The heats of formation were determined as the difference in the heat effects on solution of a compound and of a mechanical mixture of its components added from the reference temperature of 273°K to liquid bismuth at 623°K. The details of the calori-metric procedure and method of calculation have been described elsewhere? The calorimeter was calibrated by adding bismuth at 273°K to the bismuth bath at 623°K. The calculated values of the heats of formation of the compounds, listed in Table I, are based on a value of 4.96 keal per g-atom for the difference between the heat contents of bismuth at 273" and 623oK7 No published values are available for the heats of formation of the compounds InBi and In2Bi. Hultgren et a1.7 have calculated a value of -0.50 i 0.10 keal per g-atom for the heat of formation at 423°K of the compound TIBi2 containing 40 at. pet T1 from heat-content measurements in the range from 398" to 700°K and the heats of formation of the liquid alloy. The difference between this value and the value of -0.66 * 0.01 keal per g-atom at 273°K is too large to be attributed to a difference between the heat capacities of the compound and the components over the temperature range 273o to 423oK7 However, the direct determination of the heat of formation by a calorimetric method should give a more accurate value. The heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds InBi and In2Bi lie on a straight line when plotted as a function of composition, Fig. 1. The compound In2Bi, therefore, appears to be barely stable with respect to its neighboring phases. In order for the free energy vs composition curve to be concave towards the composition axis, the entropy change on formation of In2Bi must be more positive than that on formation of InBi. As the compounds are ordered,2, 3, 8 there is no configurational entropy change on formation. The difference between the entropy changes on formation of the two compounds, therefore, is probably associated with the vibrational entropies. In view of the low heats of formation, the changes in vibrational entropy, due to changes in bond strength on formation of the two compounds, are likely to be small. Owing to the volume contractions on formation of the two compounds,5 the vibrational entropies probably decrease slightly but the decrease of the vibrational entropy of InBi is expected to be larger than that of In2Bi.

INTRODUCTION The major products of nickel industry in Japan are the electrolytic nickel (E-Ni), the ferro-nickel (Fe-Ni) and the nickel oxide sinter (NOS), totaling in production to 90 - 100 X 103 tons/year in terms of pure nickel content, and sharing approximately 20% for E-Ni, 10% or less for NOS, and the rest for Fe-Ni. The raw materials to be used for these products depend totally upon the imports from abroad; matte, the raw material used in the production of E-Ni, is from Australia and Indonesia; matte for the NOS is from Indonesia and New Caledonia; and garnierite, the raw material for Fe-Ni, is imported in bulk from New Caledonia, Indonesia and the Philippines. This report describes the acquisition of these raw materials, the production processes, trend of supply-demand, problem areas and the measures taken, and so forth, in connection with the nickel industry in Japan. ELECTROLYTIC NICKEL 1. History The nickel industry in Japan began in 1939 by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (SMM) with 150 tons E-Ni/month under the blast furnace smelting and the metal anode electrolysis. This was temporarily suspended after the end of last World War II, but resumed in 1952 with garnierite of New Caledonia as a raw material. Since then, the production capacity has been expanded incidentally to the increase of demand. However, since the smelting of garnierite contained about 2% nickel was very costly, the smelting process had been changed to smelt the briquettes of the mixture of garnierite and nickel sulfide concentrate imported from Canada and Australia. In 1975, this smelter was closed, and SMM's nickel refinery used matte from Western Mining Corp. (WMC) of Australia as a raw material. The refining process had been the metal anode one. The crude nickel oxide derived from roasting the high grade nickel matte had been melted and reduced with coke in the electric furnace and cast into anode. In 1970, a new refinery was constructed to produce 1,000 tons Ni/month under the matte anode process, and further, in 1976, the old refinery was converted into the matte anode process, thus resulting in the total production capacity of 1,690 tons Ni/ month today under the matte anode process. Shimura Kako Co., Ltd. began in 1951 to produce a little of E-Ni, and in 1955, they constructed a shaft furnace smelter with New Caledonian garnierite as a raw material to begin the E-Ni production under the matte anode process. Its monthly production reached 400 tons in 1957, but it discontinued its smeltering in 1963 to convert to the matte import from S. Le Nickel, WMC and INCO. In 1979, it changed the source of matte supply from the above to Soroako of Indonesia, discontinued the E-Ni production in 1979, and arranged for a total toll contract with Sumitomo. Meanwhile, SMM has developed a very distingished process for nickel-cobalt separation and refining by a solvent extraction method from nickel and cobalt mixed sulfide generated as a by-product in the nickel recovering process from laterite under the Nicaro process. Nippon Mining Co., Ltd. (NMC) also developed its own process. The plants under these processes were constructed in 1975, with the monthly production capacity of 230 tons of nickel and 130 tons of cobalt by SMM, and 300 tons of nickel and 110 tons of cobalt by NMC. SMM imports the raw material from the Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corp. of the Philippines, while NMC from Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd. of Australia. 2. Production Status 2.1 Producers and materials Today, SMM holds the monthly E-Ni production capacity of 1,920 tons, of which 1,690 tons are from the matte anode process, and the remaining 230 tons are from the mixed sulfide as a raw material. NMC also uses the mixed sulfide as a raw material for a production of 300 tons/month. [ ] Most of SMM's raw material, nickel matte, is imported from WMC of Australia, partly using the Soroako matte from Indonesia. An example of material analysis is given in Table 1. Matte is a raw material for E-Ni and NOS, and the major sources of matte supply at present are Australian WMC and Indonesian Soroako, occupying ap-

The strength of a jointed-rock mass is not well-understood. It is believed, however, that the behavior of a rock mass is governed by both the intact rock properties and the properties of the discontinuities. Rock research in the past has been concentrated on the determination of intact rock properties. Several studies are presently underway which should provide more insight into the properties of the discontinuities. Few research programs, however, have been undertaken with the intent of studying the composite rock mass behavior where either the intact rock strength or the properties of the discontinuities may control failure. There are three approaches available for studying the behavior of a rock mass, namely, field studies, mathematical models (finite element), and geomechanical models. A geomechanical model has been developed in this study where the strength and failure modes of a model rock mass are studied as a function of intact block geometry, joint orientation, joint properties, and confining pressure. The objective of this study is to gain some insight into the parameters that govern the behavior of a rock mass, which parameters are most important, and when these parameters control. This chapter describes only one phase of the study, the development of equipment for use with the rock-blocks model. The models being tested are approximately 22 x 22 x 6-in. The size varies slightly depending upon the joint orientation used. The equipment developed includes model material molds, reaction frames, loading apparatus, measuring and recording instrumentation, and other accessory equipment pertinent to the operation of a successful study. INTRODUCTION Good mine ventilation starts at the drawing board. A coal mine will either be adequately ventilated or not, depending upon how good a job was done in the planning. Poor planning will not only result in inadequate ventilation, but may also lead to low productivity. A mine foreman cannot achieve high productivity while trying to maintain 4.2 m3/s (9000 cfm) of air at his last open crosscut. PLANNING What will provide adequate ventilation? A rule of thumb in laying out a coal mine is to provide enough entries in the main entry system to keep air velocities at 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) or less; at this rate of flow, good ventilation may be expected. The intake and return air courses of a coal mine do not improve with age. Entries will deteriorate, ribs will slough, roof will fall, and clutter will accumulate. The resistance offered to air travel will continue to increase with each passing year. Providing enough airways for the present and the future cannot be emphasized too strongly. In order to better appreciate good planning and bring it into better focus, assume a hypothetical mine has the following features: entries 1.5 m (5 ft) high and 6.1 m (20 ft) wide; one intake and one return entry; the mine development is 4.8 km (3 miles) from the intake and upcast ventilation shafts; and the ventilation requirement is 141.6 m3/s (300,000 cfm). Air travel of 4.8 km (3 miles) into a mine and the same distance back to the fan is not unusual. However, to do so with one intake and one

An analysis for predicting the behavior of reservoirs exploited by a combined gas drive and gravity draintrge mechanism is presented. The method allows the prediction of gas-oil ratio, oil production rate, and cumlulative oil recovery for high relief pools in which pressure is maintained either by gas injection in the crest of the structure or by a combined gas and water injection program. The reservoir is represented by a model of communicating vertical prisms, with production or injection at the upper or lower boundaries of each prism. The theory of macroscopic gravitational segregation of two fluids within a reservoir is discussed in detail for all ranges of saturation. A description of an application of the analysis to a typical field problem is also presented. INTRODUCTION The importance of gravity drainage as a producing mechanism has become more evident during recent years. However, many of the reservoir engineering methods which have been used in the past for predicting the behavior of reservoirs producing by this mechanism have required such drastic, simplifying assumptions that the calculated performance in some cases does not resemble the actual pool behavior. The mechanism of fluid displacement in porous media has been described by Buckley and Leverett,1 and a simplified "one zone" method based on this development has been used by engineers to evaluate the performance of gravity drainage pools. Welge2 has modi- fied this approach so that the calculation time has been markedly decreased. In addition, many other authors3-9 have analyzed various phases of the gravity drainage producing mechanism during the past several years. In a high relief reservoir in which gravity may affect the recovery mechanism, there are two main types of exploitation programs which can be employed: 1. Reservoir pressure is maintained by injecting gas into the upper portions of the reservoir. In this case gas is not released from solution and, if dynamic pressure drops are small compared to the total pressure of the system, the gas and oil may be considered to be immiscible and to have constant fluid characteristics. 2. Reservoir pressure is not maintained and a "natural depletion" mechanism prevails. The term "natural depletion" can be used to describe the production history of a reservoir in which a gradual decline of average pressure and the associated release of solution gas continue throughout the producing life. In this mechanism gas is released throughout the reservoir and there is a continuous change in the characteristics of both the gas and the oil phases. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of mathematical developments by which a method has been devised for evaluating the performance of reservoirs which are depleted by the first type of exploitation program discussed above. It should be mentioned that, although throughout the analysis gas and oil represent the two fluids existing in the reservoir, the method is equally applicable to gravity drainage in water-oil systems. For some years we have been carrying on a rather comprehensive investigation of the occurrence of oxygen in liquid open-hearth steel. This investigation was interrupted by the war emergency and is therefore incomplete, with many questions still answered only partially, if at all; yet it seemed worth while to present a report of progress on this difficult field of research, if for no other reason than to promote discussion and further investigation of this important problem. The significance of such studies depends in large measure upon the accuracy of measurements of oxygen content in liquid steel while it is still in the furnace or as it flows into the ladle, or thence into the mold and there is, as we shall show, good reason for believing that the main source of uncertainty is in the sampling, not in the analytical method as such. The difficulty arises from the fact that any method of sampling is of itself apt to alter the amount of oxygen in solution in the liquid steel, because this oxygen is in a readily reactive condition. On the one hand, being usually present at a concentration appreciably in excess of that corresponding to equilibrium with the carbon then present, it may decrease rapidly in percentage by reaction with carbon and evolution of CO, especially if the liquid metal is in any way shaken or brought in contact with a cooler solid surface. On the other hand, it may increase rapidly by ab- sorption of oxygen from a slag, a furnace atmosphere, or from air. These circumstances, which are inherent in the problem, as well as our conclusion that, despite the considerable amount of careful work already done, there is still no method of sampling liquid steel acceptable as an unquestioned standard, ed us to undertake systematic comparisons of oxygen content of large numbers of samples taken: (I) by a single method at different positions and levels in the bath; (2) at the same place by different sampling methods; and (3) from bath, tapping stream and pouring stream. The different sampling methods yield somewhat different values and there is as yet no way to tell with certainty which is the most accurate. But the general reproducibility and consistency of the results give us some confidence in certain inferences we draw from them: namely, that the "spoon" method of sampling, properly carried out, gives somewhat more consistent results than the "bomb" method, as it has usually been practiced; that, in the bomb method, an aluminum cap is preferable to a steel cap; that the oxygen content of liquid steel in a finished heat is substantially the same all over the bath at the same level, and tends to decrease at lower levels further from the slag interface; also that it tends to decrease, and to decrease erratically, from furnace bath to tapping stream entering the ladle. Accordingly it seemed desirable to report these observations in detail as a first step, so that the reader may judge their significance as a contribution towards solution of the main problem, which is to find a means of pre-2

During 1939 little of consequence happened in East and East Central Texas in the way of oil discoveries. At the end of the year, there were 47 oil and gas fields in the district. Twelve other fields, 11 oil and one gas, have been abandoned. The ranking fields in order of the number of completions for the year were East Texas, Talco, and Rodessa (Texas portion). There were 511 oil wells (distillate wells included), 32 gas wells, and 257 dry holes completed in the district. Exploration, Discoveries and Extensions During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled, the same number as in 1938; four oil fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered. Perhaps the most important discovery, which has been named Barron field, was that of M. Samuel et al., No. 1 Barron in Limestone County. The wells in this field are of the gas-distillate type. Other than the Talco and Sulphur Bluff fields, which produce oil from the Paluxy sand (Upper Trinity), this is the first field on the Corsicana-Mexia fault zone to obtain commercial production from deeper Trinity strata. This "pay" is the Petit lime of the Lower Glen Rose of the Trinity group. The four oil discoveries were: Redland, Angelina County; Bazette, Henderson County; Rowe and Baker, Henderson County; and Marion County Shallow in Marion County. It is believed that the Bazette field, Navarro County, represents an extension of the Flag Lake field. For details concerning discoveries, extensions and important wildcat wells drilled during 1939 see Table 2. Production and Proration The district produced 175,053,729 bbl. of oil (distillate production included) which is a decrease of 4.0 per cent from the 182,369,484 bbl. IN looking around me for some subject on which to frame an address for this meeting, it has occurred to me that some results of observation and investigation, in regard to the varied conditions under which gold is found, may possibly prove of interest. The subject is one which frequently crops up in discussions at our meetings, but there is always an immense amount of uncertainty expressed as to the actual condition in which the gold exists in any particular ore. It follows, therefore, that any light which might be shed on this rather complex subject, would be of value to science and of service to mining and metallurgical practice. In some investigations which I have, from time to time, been led to make, for the purpose of determining to what extent an ore might be concentrated, I have been astonished at the very varied and apparently inexplicable results encountered, and have been naturally led to inquire into the causes for such seeming inconsistency. The mines of Gilpin county, Colorado, where gold was first discovered in that State, furnish an infinite variety of examples of its occurrence, and it was here that difficulties first presented themselves to the Colorado miners, in the sudden transition from what is called " free-milling gold-ore " to an ore characterized by properties which make the ordinary treatment by amalgamation stamp-mills utterly impracticable. So long as mining was limited to what might be called the zone of oxidation in the veins, just so long might amalgamation be conducted without difficulty; but directly the miner reached a point beyond the influence of the oxidizing power of the surface waters, the gold resisted all attempts at amalgamation, and recourse • was had to smelting.

Coal mining historically has been a. hazardous occupation but, in recent years, tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental coal mine deaths and injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the basic principles of accident prevention as they are related to coal mining. Accident prevention fundamentals are no different for coal mining than for any other type of work. The fundamentals apply to all industries. Construction workers may be struck by falling tools and materials, and miners may be struck by falling slate and coal. Sailors may be trapped by shipboard fires, and miners may be trapped by mine fires. Railroad brakemen may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers, and miners may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers. Many other examples could be cited, but the point is that accidents that happen in coal mines are basically similar to accidents that happen in other industries. Thus, the basic principles for preventing accidents apply in coal mining as they do in any other type of work. COAL MINE ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is the main source for accident experience data in coal mines. Coal mine operators are required, by law, to forward to MSHA monthly the number of fatal and disabling injuries, man-hours worked, and tons of coal mined. This information is compiled and published quarterly, with annual summaries, by MSHA. Trends in the number of fatalities and fatal injury rates are shown in Fig. 1. Major coal mine disasters, with number of miners killed, and dates of coal mine safety legislation are shown in Table 1. The fatal and disabling injury frequency rates for the coal industry are shown in Fig. 2.

DRILLING CONSIDERATIONS In considering blasting it is necessary to consider the drilling and explosives since one is generally concerned with the total cost of muck of a certain size in the pit or through the crusher. To get a current idea of the drilling situation in open pit mines plotted in Fig. 1 are the drilling costs per ton of material vs. hole diameter for rotary drill holes in large limestone, iron ore and taconite operations. The exception is the 2-in. diam hole which was drilled with a percussion drill in limestone. Each curve in Fig. 1 represents a different operation and the data cover many months of production drilling. The costs are total operating and maintenance and do not include machine depreciation. As the hole size is increased so are the machine size and the investment. Providing the tonnage is available to be drilled, then as the machine size goes up so does the productivity-markedly-and this same shape of curve applies. In some instances it is even steeper. The interesting thing to note is that in each case studied there is a substantial drop-off in cost/ton as the hole size is increased. This is true for the softest material considered, limestone, through to the hardest, taconite. How has this come about? In going from 10-in. to 123-in. diam holes, the powder factors have generally stayed about the same and the same type of muck has been produced. To date this has been mainly in the softer materials but it has also been steadily taking hold in the harder ones. On this basis, then, patterns are generally expanded as the ratio of the hole diameters or close to it, if the explosive type is kept the same. In the harder rocks the cost per foot of hole has increased somewhat so that the overall reduction in drilling cost per ton is about 25 pct. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-B alloys has been measured up to the solubility limit for the formation of boron nitride. The activity coefficient of nitrogen increases with increasing boron content in the range 0 to 7 wt pct B. From experimen -tal data, values have been calculated for the B-N interaction parameter e3 at temperatures in the range 1550" to 1750°C. A value of 0.038 has been estimated for the boron self-interaction parameter eg at 1550°C. The standard free energy of decomposition of boron nitride into the elements dissolved in liquid iron has been determined to be: ?F° = 45,900 -21.25T in the range from 1550° to 1750°C. The nitride is assumed to be of composition BN. BORON nitride has an unusual combination of properties which make it appear attractive in a wide range of engineering applications. Some of its more important and most recent applications are in the nuclear area, particularly in connection with the liquid-metal cooled reactor concept now receiving considerable emphasis. Boron nitride has a high degree of stability at elevated temperatures. It also has excellent ma-chinability and the ease with which its crystals deform suggests applications as a lubricant. These properties stem from a hexagonal layer-type structure similar to the structure of graphite. One of its primary uses to date has been for seals in liquid-metal pumping systems. It is also used in nuclear reactors as an insulating layer to separate two solid metals which are not themselves compatible under the conditions of temperature and atmosphere in which they are used. Its inertness to liquid metals has also suggested use as a mold-release agent in casting processes. In addition to its excellent machinability and reported inertness to liquid metals such as iron, silicon, aluminum, copper, and zinc, boron nitride has high thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. This combination of properties would make it appear ideal as a refractory crucible material for refining of high-purity liquid metals, for example high-quality steels. However, since it is known that concentrations of boron as low as 50 ppm can have a marked effect on the physical properties of certain steels,' in particular on the creep and stress-rupture properties, an investigation was undertaken to define accurately the chemical equilibrium among boron, nitrogen, and liquid iron in the range of steelmaking temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two experimental approaches to this problem were employed: a Sieverts' method and a quenching method. In the first method, the Sieverts' technique was used to measure the equilibrium nitrogen solubility in liquid Fe-B alloys of 0 to 7 pct B as a function of nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. The solubility limit of the boron nitride phase formed was determined by the point of departure of the nitrogen absorption from Sieverts' Law. This technique has been applied to liquid Fe-Ti alloys by Rao and parlee,' to liquid Fe-A1 alloys by Evans and Pehlke,3 and to solid Fe-V alloys by Fountain and Chipman.4 In the second method a melt of liquid iron was held in a crucible of boron nitride under a known partial pressure of nitrogen gas. After thermodynamic equilibrium was attained, the melt was quenched in a stream of helium and then analyzed by wet-chemical methods for boron and nitrogen. The Sieverts' apparatus used in the first method was essentially of the same design as the one described by Pehlke and Elliott.5 The charge materials were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferro-vac E) supplied by the Crucible Steel Co. and -325 mesh boron powder supplied by Cooper Metallurgical Associates of Cleveland, Ohio. The boron contained less than 0.02 wt pct O, according to supplier's analysis. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to contain the melt. Examination of solidified melts showed these crucibles to be satisfactory with no evidence of any reaction or physical penetration of the crucible wall by the melt. The melt temperature was measured by a disappearing filament-type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diam sight hole in the crucible lid. This paper describes the application of x-ray theory to design procedures in connection with fluid saturation determinations during fluid flow experiments with porous media. A reliable and rapid method for calibrating the x-ray apparatuy is described. Extension of the method to fluid saturation determinations in three-fluid systems is described. INTRODUCTION In rerearch on oil production problems a method is required which will give quickly the quantity of each component of a fluid flow system present at any cross-section of a porous medium. The sample of porous medium under investigation is usually referred to as a core. The ratio of the volume of one component to the total fluid volume is defined as the saturation of the porous medium by that component. This ratio is generally given as per cent saturation. Some means of measuring saturation which have received consideration include: electrical conductivity of the fluids;1,2 emissions from radioactive tracers dissolved in the fluids; the radioactivity of silver caused by reflection of neutrons from hydrogen atoms in the fluids;' the attenuation of a microwave beam. the diminution and phase shift of ultrasonic wave trains.4,5 and the reduction in intensity of x-ray beams in passing through the fluids. X-rays have already been used with some success. Since every material has a different power to absorb x-rays, the reduction in intensity of an x-ray beam as it passes through a core depends on the fluids present. The strength of the emergent beam can be found by converting its energy into a measurable form such as heat or ionic current. or by its effect on a photographic plate or fluorescent screen. The beam strengths could be interpreted as quantities of known fluids in the core if, previously, these beam strengths had been identified with a known combination of the same fluids. With some fluid cornbinations it might be desirable to dissolve powerful x-ray absorbing materials in one or more of the fluids, to increase the differences in the beam strengths for various fluid saturations. Boyer, Morgan and Muskat6 have described a method of measuring two component fluid saturation. One component was air or water; the other. minerat seal oil in which was dissolved 25 per cent by weight of iodobenzene to increase its absorbing power. The x-ray source was a tungsten target tube operated at 43 kv potential. The beam emerging from the core was measured as ionic current flowing across an air-filled ionization chamber by means of an amplifying circuit and galvanometer. Another portion of the beam from the x-ray tube was passed through a metal plate and measured in another ionization chamber. This portion, called the monitor beam, was used as an indication of the performance of the x-ray tube. The galvanometer readings were calibrated against air-oil core saturations, gravimetrically determined. The method was apparently established by experimental means. In the present investigation the available theory of x-radia-tion was surveyed with a view to extending the usefulness of the method and to developing design procedures for its application to measurement of fluid saturation in porous media. Application of the theory permits prediction of relative meter readings to be expected for any combination of porous matrix, various saturating fluids and auxiliary filtering media. It is thus possible to calibrate the equipment in terms of fluid saturation by an indirect but rapid technique. The results of calculations based on x-ray theory indicate. and results of the saturation calibration technique confirm. that a valid measurement of the saturation of the core can be made for any two components and in some cases for three components. THEORY The strength of an x-ray beam, after it has passed through a distance. 1, of matter of density, p, and mass absorption coefficient, µ at a given wavelength, A, may be expressed by the absorption formula I = I0 e ...........(1) where I, represents the intensity of the incident x-ray beam and I is the intensity of the emergent beam. The expression e is called the transmission factor of the material. The variation of I,, with wavelength depends upon the materials through which the x-ray beam has previously passed and upon the spectral distribution of energy at the source of the x-radiation. A group of curves. called spectra. which show the variation of intensity with wavelength and x-ray tube voltage are given in Fig. 1. These curves represent the general radiation from a tungsten target tube. When the tube voltage is greater than 69.3 kv, the characteristic radiation of the tungsten is emitted and is superposed on the general radiation. At a given voltage the minimum wavelength A,,,,, at which energy can be emitted by an x-ray tube is given by the formula 12,340 xml. = ——..........(2) volts where A,.,,.. is in Angstrom units. Some of the basic problems in understanding elec-tromigration in metals are discussed, along with the attempts that are being made to handle them. One such problem is the effect of the electrostatic forces. It is now acknowledged that the momentum exchange with charge carriers plays generally a dominant role in the driving force but the question remains to what extent the electrostatic force may still be effective. The electromigration of interstitial impurities is also an area which presents some intriguing questions. For the substitutional impurity, moving by the vacancy mechanism under the influence of an electric field, the correlation considerations are somewhat more complex than have been previously recognized. Another problem of basic importance in the calculution from first principles is the strength of the "electron friction" force, say for a simple one-band metal. A related problem growing out of the preceding is the prediction of the direction of the "electron wind" force for metals with band structure involving both holes and electrons. THE term electromigration has come to be used to describe the flow of matter in condensed phases carrying high electronic currents such as metals and alloys, whereas one usually reserves the term electrolysis for situations where the current is largely ionic, particularly in the liquid state such as molten salts. It follows that the mass transport number in electromigration is always very small, of the order of 10-7. Studies of electromigration date back some 30 years but the modern period would appear to date from the work of Seith and Wever1 who in the mid 1950's first incorporated markers to display mass motion relative to the lattice and first suggested that the direction of the mass flow was primarily determined by the sign of the charge carriers. Since that time interest in the field has grown steadily and more rapidly recently as certain technological applications became apparent. Chief of these is certainly the deleterious effects that electromigration can cause, even at relatively low temperature, to current-carrying elements in integrated circuitry.2 These phenomena have been the subject of intense study and considerable ingenuity. On the constructive side electromigration has proved a useful tool in the purification of certain metals.3 The interest of this paper is, however, centered more on the basic aspects of the subject than on its technological applications. That high electric currents should give rise to mass flow in metals and that the driving force should be more directly associated with momentum exchange with the charge carriers than with the electrostatic field are ideas that no longer cause surprise or particular interest. The field has matured to the point where the general concepts are widely accepted and continued progress in basic understanding rests on more detailed and quantitative exploration. It is the purpose of this paper to point out what are some of the current problems. As a result, we expect to raise more questions than we answer. The first of these will be the role of electrostatic forces, if any, in electromigration. A second section will deal with the electromigration of interstitials. A third and final section treats with electromigration of substitutional impurities or of the matrix atoms themselves. ELECTROSTATIC DRIVING FORCE In the conceptual treatments of electromigration it has been customary to write the driving force in terms of an effective charge number Z* and to divide it into two terms F = e£Z* = e£[Zel- z(pd/Nd)(N/p)(m*\m*\)] [1] The first of these represents the electrostatic force under immediate consideration in this section and the second and usually dominating term for metals arises from momentum exchange with charge carriers, commonly called the "electron drag" term. As can be seen it is set proportional to the electrons per atom, z, and the ratio of the specific resistivity of the moving entity to the corresponding resistivity per matrix atom. The (m*/Im*I) factor takes into account the fact that the sign of the charge carrier determines the sign of the driving force. The specific resistivity of the moving entity is averaged over its path. In the case of motion of the matrix atoms by vacancies this gives rise to approximately one-half the resistivity at the saddle point since the scattering power of the atom at its equilibrium position bordering the vacancy differs only slightly from that of a normal matrix atom. Although the formulation of the "electron drag" term in Eq. [I] is based on a highly simplified model for electron defect scattering, the essential features implicit in the expression are common to all the theoretical approaches that have so far appeared in the literature.4-6 As for Zel, most treatments of electromigration have included the quantity as the parameter which measures the direct interaction of the electrostatic field with the ion and equated it to the nominal valence of the latter. However, there has been considerable discussion whether this interaction may not be 0 in many cases.6 If the moving ion is always enveloped by the same distribution of shielding charge, then clearly its motion will not involve any work done by the electric field and one can expect there will be no electrostatic force exerted on such a neutral composite. From this point of view the shielding charge around the ion would be said to be complete and hence the entity within the Debye shielding sphere would be unaffected by the electrostatic field per se. There is, however, the prospect that, as the moving ion progresses, new charge comes in to participate in the shielding action

With the aid of emulsifiers, intense high-frequency sound waves are capable of emulsifying any collector in water. The data show also that ultrasonically emulsified collectors are more effective in floating minerals than the nonemulsified collectors. THE use of ultrasonics in forming emulsions is not new. As early as 1927 Wood and Loomis reported preparation of emulsions with ultrasonics. In 1935 Rschevkin and OstrawskyV escribed the use of great ultrasonic power in producing fine emulsions of various oils and paraffin in water. Recently Oyama and Tanaka3 employed ultra-emulsification to increase the effectiveness of sodium ethyl xanthate in flotation of chalcopyrite and galena. An emulsion is a two-phase system consisting of two incompletely miscible liquids, the one being dispersed as finite droplets In the other. The dispersed liquld is known as the internal or discontinuous phase, and the surrounding liquid is termed the external or continuous phase. There are two types of emulsions; one is oil-in-water (O/W) and the other water-in-oil (W/O). The word oil refers to the liquid other than water. Circumstances exist in which the emulsion type is not clearly defined, and the internal and external phases both contain portions of the opposite phase. This is said to be a dual emulsion. Among the many hypotheses, 5a, B proposed for the formation of emulsions, the Bancroft's adsorbed film or double interfacial tension theory is widely accepted. Bancroft 7, 8 deduced that in the process of emulsification the interfacial tension between oil and water is lowered by the formation of an emulsifying film, which contains the adsorbed molecules and/or ions from the emulsifying agent and the two liquids. This film has two interfacial tensions, one with the water and the other with the oil, which are not necessarily equal. The difference in interfacial tension between the two surfaces of the film is chiefly responsible for forming different types of emulsions. For example, if the interfacial tension between water and film is less than that between oil and film, the film will become convex on the water side, thereby tending to form an oil-in-water emulsion. On the other hand, if the interfacial tension between water and film is greater than that between oil and film, the film will become concave on the water side, thereby tending to make a water-in-oil emulsion. In line with this theory, emulsifying agents soluble in water have the tendency to form oil-in-water emulsions, while those soluble in oil form emulsions of the reverse type. Apparatus and Experimental Procedure: The ultrasonic apparatus shown in Fig. 1 consisted of a hypersonic generator (A), Brush Development Co. model Bu-204; a hypersonic transducer bowl (B) whose resonant frequency is 400 kc per sec; and a round-bottomed glass tube (C) of 2.2 cm ID and 21 cm in length. The acoustical output power of the hypersonic transducer bowl was standardized with a Hewlett Packard vacuum tube voltmeter, model 41 0B, across the hypersonic generator output. The glass tube, containing the materials to be emulsified, was placed 1 cm above the central surface of the transducer bowl, which was filled with water as shown in Fig. 2. Ultrasonic emulsification was performed in three steps, although a one-step method has been used: 1) emulsifying the predetermined amounts of col-
