Selenium is found most frequently as an accessory mineral in the ores of lead, copper, and nickel, and is recoverable as a byproduct in the treatment of many of the ores of these metals. The geographic distribution of the selenium industry closely follows that of electrolytic copper, with the United States and Canada producing approximately 75% of the total output of the non-communist world. This situation is problem number one for selenium-its dependence upon the electrolytic refining of copper- for this byproduct source is not sufficiently flexible to permit a normal supply-demand balance. Furthermore, selenium has become a strategic material in short supply. Thus, new sources are being sought by both government and private interests. Although considerable attention has been given to this effort during the last few years, hardly any research has been published concerning the recovery of small amounts of selenium present in low-grade deposits. In such ores the metal occurs as native selenium or as selenides of iron, copper, silver, lead, and bismuth. In recent years, some native selenium (in both the gray and red form) and selenides, especially iron selenide (ferroselite), reportedly have been found in the sandstones of the Morrison formation near Grants. New Mexico. Similar occurrences have been reported in the Hagan coal basin, in Sandoval County, New Mexico. Samples from New Mexico ores have contained from a trace amount to as high as 0.425% Se. Some of the samples from uranium mines in the Grants area represent mixed ore and mill feed fur uranium reduction plants. In such cases, the selenium usually is reported as an impurity and is lost in the tailings. At present, no attempt is made to recover this waste metal.

Platinum electrodes are not inert as often thought to be. The reactivity of platinum electrodes can explain their erratic behavior in many electrochemical measurements of metallurgical interest, e.g, in flotation systems, streaming potential measurements, contact-angle measurements, and in leaching systems. The anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in aqueous systems was studied through Eh and pH measure ments in water-oxygen, iron-water-oxygen, and manganese-water-oxygen systems. Stability relations between Fe++ and Fe (OH), and between Fe (OH), and Fe (OH), were studied to judge the correspondence between experimental and theoretical equilibrium lines. The practicality of redox potential measurements in estimating ferric-ferrous ratios in aqueous systems was investigated along with their suitability as indicators in leaching operations, e.g., the removal of iron by aeration from manganese leach solutions. Platinum electrodes have often been used in the measurement of dissolved oxygen concentrations and of redox potentials (Eh) in a variety of fields, e.g., analytical chemistry,' corrosion," geology and mineralogy,,'' biology,"' sewage treatment,' * hydrometallurgy,"I" and flotation."la The effectiveness of Eh-pH diagrams, first reported by Pourbaix' in 1949, has contributed much towards the theoretical understanding of numerous problems encountered in the metallurgical industry. Not many references are available in the literature, however, wherein attempts have been made to confirm Eh-pH diagrams from experimental measurements. One reason might be that, in spite of the apparent simplicity of the electrochemical technique, the direct measurement of Eh involves complex practical problems.' Factors such as the purity of the solution, the type of electrodes used, the history of the indicator electrode, and the type of atmosphere (namely, oxidizing, reducing, or inert) do have effects on the measured Eh values. The influence of mixed potentials cannot be underestimated. The poisoning of platinum electrodes by organic and inorganic impurities present in the solution may lead to erratic results. Platinum, commonly thought to be an inert electrode material, is not really so, as attested by a number of previous investigators who advised caution concerning the anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in various electrochemical measurements.'" In the present article, a few pertinent experiments related to Eh-pH measurements in systems of interest in the metallurgical and water pollution fields are described in an attempt to correlate such information with what is already known, especially in the electrochemical literature. Iron-water and manganese-water systems were selected with a view of studying the correspondence between experimentally observed and theoretically established equilibrium lines. The work included an investigation of the behavior of platinum electrodes with respect to pretreatment and adsorption characteristics, the measurement of dissolved oxygen concentrations and their relation to Eh, the determination of the electrode potential of the ferric-ferrous couple at different pH, and the measurement of oxidation potentials in iron-manganese leaching systems. Experimental Procedure A rotating platinum electrode was used in many of the measurements to study the effect of rotation on measured Eh values. The electrode made by the Pine Instrument Co. consisted of a stainless steel rod with a platinum disk soldered to the end. It was covered with a Teflon insulation along the sides, so that only the circular tip of the electrode was exposed to the solution. Prior to its use, the platinum surface was brightened on a metallurgical polishing wheel with alumina as an abrasive, unless specified otherwise. The electrode was rotated with a Sargent cone-drive motor at 350 rpm. The contact of the electrode with the external circuit was made by filling a notch at the top of the stainless steel shaft with mercury and by dipping a copper wire into the mercury pool. The performance of the rotating platinum electrode was compared with the performances of a Beckman platinum button electrode and a platinum wire electrode. All the potentials were measured with respect to a saturated calomel electrode. A saturated KC1-agar bridge was used to minimize the liquid junction potential. A Beckman Zeromatic pH meter together with a Beck-man electrode switch was used to measure both the Eh and pH. A double-walled, all-Pyrex jar with a capacity of about 1 liter and themostated by circulating water of constant temperature was used for a reaction cell. Four equally spaced ports in the cover provided access for a glass electrode, a salt bridge connecting the saturated calomel electrode, a dispersion tube for bubbling gases into the cell solution, inlet and outlet tubes for passing the desired gases over the solution, and a graduated burette for introducing reagents from outside. The rotating platinum electrode was inserted through an opening in the top-center of the cover, and a positive gas pressure was maintained inside the cell to prevent air from entering into the cell compartment. A magnetic stirrer was used to mix the solution inside. For the determination of dissolved oxygen in the test solutions, the polarographic techniquex was used.

Mechanical properties of columbium have been studied over the temperature range of -196 to 1093oC. The decreased strengthening influence of cold-work at temperatures below ambient has been interpreted in terms of the Peierls-Nabarro effect. Maxima in the rate of strain hardening observed during tensile testing in the range 250-600°C. have been correlated with interstitial impurities to indicate the temperature ranges at which carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, respectively, are responsible for strain aging. THE growing need for structural materials for use above the useful service temperatures of the iron-, nickel-, or cobalt-base alloys has caused the refractory metals to be considered as potential engineering materials. These metals, which include columbium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten, are called refractory because the lowest melting point among them,that of columbium, is about 1000°C higher than the average melting temperatures of conventional high-temperature alloys. They are all body-centered cubic transition metals and, as such, their mechanical properties have basic characteristics which distinguish them from the face-centered cubic metals. For example, all show a much steeper rise in strength with decreasing temperature below room temperature than do the face-centered cubic metals, and their mechanical properties are strongly influenced by interstitially dissolved impurities. In order that these new metals may be used efficiently, it is necessary that their characteristics of behavior be fully known. In this paper, the mechanical properties of columbium will be examined over a wide range of temperatures. In particular, the influences of cold-work and individual species of interstitial impurity atoms on mechanical properties will be described, and basic mechanisms which may control the observed characteristics will be explored. EXPERIMENTAL The material used in this investigation was Union Carbide Metals Co. columbium roundels consolidated to four 4-in. diam ingots, three by consumable-electrode arc melting and one ingot by electron beam melting. Impurity contents of the ingots and methods of ingot conversion and treatment are summarized in Table I. The only metallic impurity occurring in any significant quantity was tantalum at about 0.1 pct. Iron, silicon, titanium, and zirconium were each less than 0.015 pct; boron was 1 ppm or less. This should have no appreciable influence on properties. The electron beam melted material, being the purest, will be used as the basis for comparison in the discussions to follow. Tensile tests were conducted from-196 to 1093oC, on both cold-worked and fully recrystallized arc-melted and electron-beam melted columbium using standard 1/4-in. diam, 1-in. long gage length test specimens. A strain-rate of 0.005 in. per in. per min was employed until the 0.2 pct yield strength was achieved and then the strain-rate was increased to 0.05 in. per in. per min for the balance of the test. Samples were protected in an inert atmosphere at tests above 300°C. The tensile properties obtained on the electron-beam melted columbium, E, in both the cold-swaged and recrystallized conditions are given in Fig. 1. The yield strength data of Dyson, et al.,' obtained on recrystallized electron beam melted columbium and the tensile strength data reported by Tottle2 on powder metallurgy columbium are included in Fig. 1. The material used by Tottle had been purified by vacuum sintering. There is excellent agreement between Dyson's data and those obtained in the present investigation. The tensile strengths obtained by Tottle were slightly greater than those obtained in this investigation on electron-beam melted columbium but varied with temperature in a similar manner. Tottle's data showed a maximum in tensile strength near 500°C, as did our data on electron-beam melted material, and also showed a small maximum at 300°C. The significance of these maxima will become evident later in the discussion. The tensile properties of cold-swaged and recrys-tallized arc melted columbium are plotted in Fig. 2. It was found that the properties of the recrystallized arc-melted columbium from all three heats showed very close agreement except at temperatures between about 500" and 800°C. A reason for this range of disagreement will be suggested in the discussion. The generally good agreement, however, attests to the ability of cold-working and subsequent recrystal-lization to erase the effects of the three different primary breakdown procedures and to produce nearly equivalent structures in the samples derived from the three different heats. wesse13 reported tensile data on columbium having interstitial impurity contents between those of the

In the routine examination of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of nonmetallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-free surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimens such as tool metals con-taining various carbide and nitride phases. It is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work.

IN plants casting electric-furnace ingots and converting them immediately into blooms, billets, slabs, bars or forgings, the criterion of quality performance is the soundness of the semifinished or finished product. When rejections are necessary, it is not always obvious whether the defects were caused by an unsound ingot or by improper treatment during the heating and forming operations. To evaluate the effects of the numerous factors involved, it is necessary to accumulate a large number of detailed observations and to analyze and interpret these data properly. Even after a thorough investigation has been conducted, it is impossible, in some cases, to isolate the cause of the defect and say that it is definitely the result of an unsound condition in the ingot or mistreatment of the ingot during further processing. Two factors that are extremely difficult to evaluate are the chemical composition of the steel and time from finish pour to charge in the soaking pits or "track time," and it is necessary to evaluate their combined effects before many other factors can be studied. Plain carbon, fine-grained steel in the range of 0.18 to 0.23 pct carbon, is very susceptible to cracking and the longer the elapsed time between the pouring of the ingots and stripping for charging into the soaking pits, the higher the billet rejections for cracks are found to be. I. INTRODUCTION. THE superficial alteration of ore-deposits is a recognized principle of geology, in the same way as is the superficial alteration of any of the common rocks. Its importance in some classes of ore-deposits is also well understood, as in many precious-metal deposits; while in other classes, its importance has been proved in individual cases, as in the Lake Superior iron-deposits. The causes and effects of superficial alteration in many classes of deposits, however, are not so generally understood; and it is the object of the present paper to show that such changes almost invariably give rise to exceedingly important chemical and physical phenomena, while in many deposits, the question as to whether they can or cannot be profitably worked depends largely on the extent and character of this alteration. The various treatises on ore-deposits published in the United States and Europe make frequent mention of superficial alteration, but have not treated the subject fully. As early as 1554, however, before which time but little accurate information was had on the geologic nature of ore-deposits, Prof. J. D. Whitney in his classic volume, The Metallic Wealth of the United States, describes the alteration-products, or gossans, in certain deposits and mentions others. On the more purely chemical side of the question, the work of Bischof, Daubrée, Roth, Rose, Hunt, Breithaupt, Blum, Julien, Deville, Debray, Volger, Moissan, Fremy, Lévy, Fouqué, and others has afforded much valuable information and many useful suggestions. CREEP investigators have made extensive studies to determine the interrelation of stress, temperature and the tensile creep rates of metals. It has been suggested that at small stresses the secondary or constant creep rates obey a simple viscous law. Building upon this suggestion, departure from pure viscosity as stress increases may be expressed mathematically as a consequence of reversibly altered viscosity or "flowability" in the same sense that temperature change reversibly alters viscosity. From the index to alteration of viscosity, a value for the energy of secondary creep may be derived having the magnitude of the free energy of vaporized metal. The suggestion is made that applica-tion of stress alters the energy of secondary creep. Strain energy is argued to be but a minor factor in the energetics of secondary creep. A deformation mechanism involving the large energy associated with secondary creep implies a sort of solid self-diffusion process. Evidence indicates that creep strain above the recrystallization temperature takes place by crystallographically directed self-diffusion at grain boundaries and points of crystal defects. A self-diffusion theory of secondary creep is proposed, embracing the principles of the Dushman-Langmuir theory of solid diffusion. An equation is suggested whereby the rate of tensile creep may be related directly to the physical and struc-tural character of the solid metal.

MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems are met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present is severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hampers their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a resume of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels.

It was noticed early by operators that high recoveries and flocculation of the sulphide minerals were closely correlated in agitation-froth flotation. Later, this readily visible flocculation was found almost invariably to be due to the binding together of the oiled sulphides by minute air bubbles, and is now known to be characteristic of pulps in which at least one of the mineral species is coated with an insoluble collecting oil. In 1930 it was reported1 that in differential flotation a correlation exists between Brownian movement of particles in the pulp and their nonfloatability, and that Brownian movement and dispersion are likewise correlated, whence it would appear to follow that dispersion of a mineral particle in a flotation pulp denotes a particle condition unfavorable to flotation. In 1934 it was postulated2 that Brownian movement, dispersion and nonfloatability all flow from the condition of the surface of the dispersed particles. It was also postulated at that time that the surfaces of dispersed particles are ionized, the ionized compound being a product of reaction between a component of the particle and a component of the pulp, of a mass solubility of the general order of a fraction of a milligram to I 5 to 20 mg. per liter. It was then further asserted, and has since been confirmed by Bankoff,3 that sulphides so conditioned with soluble collectors as to be floatable flocculate without the intervention of air bubbles as binding media. The present paper comprises an inquiry into the nature of the bound and counter ions in zinc sulphide dispersed by sodium arsenate. A part of its findings was mentioned in the 1934 paper above cited.= The tests show that: I. When powdered granular zinc sulphide is immersed in aqueous solutions of sodium arsenate, arsenate ion is abstracted from solution and anchored to the solid surface, while sulphate and lower sulphoxy ions are concurrently displaced therefrom in substantially stoichiometric quantities. 2. The ion counterbalancing the anchored arsenate ion is zinc. 3. Dispersion and Brownian movement of zinc sulphide are concurrently maxima at an arsenate-ion concentration lying between 0.01 and 0.001-molar sodium arsenate. 4. Any condition or reaction that tends. to remove the zinc arsenate coating from the zinc sulphide particles decreases dispersion and Brownian movement concurrently. Experimental Three samples of zinc sulphide were used. Lot I was C.P. zinc sulphide, washed well be~ond absence of chloride, as shown by test with silver ion. Lot 2 was prepared by precipitation from hydrochloric acid solution of arsenic-free zinc, and was washed as lot I. Lot 3 was prepared by heating a portion of lot 2 in absence of air at 1200° to r300°C. for one hour."

This paper presents the results obtained after calculating matches of the observed pressure performance of five fields completed in a common aquifer. A general dejcription of the Central Basin Platform area in West Texas in which the five fields, Andector, Embear, Martin, TXL, and wheeler, are lo. cated is contained in the paper. The method of utilizing the electric analyzer to calculate simultaneously matches of the observed pressure performance of the five fields is outlined. The determination of boundaries of pressure communication is discussed and the extent of pressure interference between fields consistent with the configuration of the area aquifer is shown graphically. INTRODUCTION Anomalies in the pressure performance of the Andeector Ellenhurger Field resulted in an investigation of pressure interference between several Ellenburger fields located on the Central Basin Platform in West Texas. Four fields, Embar, Martin, TXL, and Wheeler, were found to contribute significantly to the pressure drawdown at Andector. An initial investigation of the pressure performance of the Andector Ellenburger Field revealed that the reservoir pressure could not be matched by the calculation technique usually applied to water drive reservoirs. In the past, many have advanced the opinion that fracturing in the Ellenburger was a local condition restricted to the immediate uplifted area around the field, in which case each field would in all probability be surrounded by its own relatively small aquifer. Following several unsuccessful attempts to account for the pressure performance at Andector, a system assuming a common aquifer involving several fields in the immediate vicinity of Andector was placed on the electric analyzer and the effect of lo. interference was noted. A refinement of the initial analyzer calculations involved the determination of the approximate boundaries of the aquifer, the calculation of detailed matches of the pressure performance of the interfering fields, and an evaluation of the degree of communication between fields. DISCUSSION Geology and Development The fields considered in this work are located in the Central Basin Platform, a north-south trending structural feature in West Texas lying between the Delaware Basin to the west and the Midland Basin to the east. The locations of various individual Ellenburger fields in this general are shown in Fig. 1 with the five major fields which appear to be definitely intercommunicating colored in black and located in the circled portion of the figure. Production from the five fields was first obtained from the Embar Field discovered in July 1942, followed by the Wheeler Field in 1943, the TXL Field in 1945, and the Martin and Andector Fields in 1946. Drilling activity during 1944 increased considerably in the oil fields and slightly in the shallow gas fields of western Pennsylvania. The number of deep tests (middle Devonian or deeper) completed during 1944 was the same as in 1943 and did not result in discoveries of additional reserves of natural gas or oil. Thus far no commercial oil production has been obtained from sands below the Upper Devonian in Pennsylvania. As a result of the lack of new discoveries, oil production in nearly all of the producing areas in the entire Pennsylvania grade region declined 10 to 11 per cent. Stocks of Pennsylvania Oil The Peilnsylvania grade crude-oil stocks in storage on January 1943 were 2,479,000 bbl. In January 1944 crude stocks totaled 1,846,000 bbl., and during 1944 the stocks of Pennsylvania grade crude declined to a year-ending balance of 1,617,000 bbl. Nearly all of this oil is "unavailable for use," representing pipe-line fill, tank bottoms and limited working inventories at the refineries. The storage of Pennsylvania oil has declined to a point where little or no available crude oil is currently in storage. Prices The posted price of Pennsylvania oil remained constant during 1944; however, on Rug. I, 1944, the wartime Government subsidy was instituted at a rate of 75¢ per barrel. The average price in the Bradford area, including the subsidy, was $3.31 per barrel. New Technical Developments The Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association started a rather ambitious program of research in production fundamentals and technology during 1944. Several well-qualified engineers have been employed and a laboratory is to be equipped at Bradford. The group will investigate, in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute, the possibilities of bacteria as agents in oil recovery, and undertake other studies of both a fundamental and an applied nature. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania State College, the Research Group worked out a method of measuring water-intake rates in different strata. The method involves injecting salt water down a string of tubing and fresh water down the annulus, determining the location of the interface electrically, and measuring the input rates above and below the interface. The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with oil companies of the Venango district, developed a simple gas-lift tubing string, which is operating successfully in some 20 wells. Geological Engineering is now a recognized curriculum in most of the mining schools in United States. Graduates of these schools are scattered over the face of the earth, participating in exploration and mining enterprises of diverse character. They are engaged in the mapping of new mineral deposits, in the extension of old deposits, the estimation of reserves, microscopic analysis, and in the direction of exploitation and conservation of man's natural resources. The training of men qualified to carry out these technical phases of modern industry has fallen essentially to the mining schools. For the most part they have met the demand for technically trained men in the mineral industries. Schools Offering Geological Engineering Degree The mining schools have passed through the early stages of their development and at the present offer varied curricula covering the fields of geological engineering, mining engineering, and metallurgical engineering. Usually a B.S. degree is offered in any of these three fields. However, .there has been some tendency of recent date on the part of the Engineers Council for Professional Development to question the validity of a B.S. degree in Geological Engineering. The of this paper is to examine the curricula as offered in the mining schools, to evaluate their engineering content, and to propose minimum requirements for the degree of Geological Engineering in the mining industry. The curricula of eight institutions that offer the degree of B.S. in Geological Engineering or Mining Geology have been studied (Table 1). All except one of these schools are in or near mining districts and occur west of the Mississippi River. They are all state-supported institutions that have come into existence because of the state's need for technically trained men. A graduate from .a mining school is called upon to perform many duties of a technical nature. His initial task may be to make a geological map of a mine or the surface above, but before the map is finished he may be asked to take over the responsibility of getting the ore "on top." And finally, he might find it essential to know how to mill the ore. Certainly this requires technically trained men and the mining schools are essentially the organizations to do the job. The departments of geology in these schools are training geological engineers. Field Of Geology If we were to accept the opinions of some writers, we would be forced to conclude that all geology departments offer only a "dilettante" variety of subjects.

Much has been written concerning the hoisting equipment of various mines throughout the country, but most of the literature on the subject, if not all, describes equipment of extraordinary capacity and the small and medium-sized outfits have been neglected. The hoisting equipment here described is capable of handling about 1200 tons per day. It has not been worked to capacity, but 600 to 700 tons, together with men and materials, have been handled in two shifts without any great effort. Only one shaft extends from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine; see Fig. I. It is composed of three compartments, two of which are used for hoisting, and the third for water, air, and electrical lines, and for sinking purposes. In 1909, this shaft was raised from the 1000-ft. (304-m.) level to the 700-ft. There a station was cut and an air hoist installed. At this time all mining operations were confined to the upper levels of the mine; that is, above the 700-ft. The ore was dropped to this level through chutes from the 300-, 400-, 500-, and 600-ft. levels and then lowered in cars on cages to the 1000-ft., which is the main haulage adit, the mill and railroad bins being about 3000 ft. from the shaft. Orebodies were, in due time, developed on the 1000-ft. level and below. Therefore, in 1913,the shaft was sunk to the 1150-ft. level and thereafter sinking was continued at regular intervals until the 1500-ft. level was reached. But, hoisting from the 1300-ft. level was a difficult and slow process with the antiquated air hoist, so, in 1916, it was decided to raise the shaft to the surface and install a modern, electrically operated hoist. This was completed early in 1917 and the hoist was in operation in March of that year. The Hoist Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show various features of the hoist and electrical equipment. A Nordberg engine of the double-drum, geared type, designed for a 10-ton load, including rope, at a speed of 1500 ft. per min., is used. The drums are 7 ft. (2.1 m.) in diameter, with a 54-in. The Eagle mine is situated in the Kerber Creek mining district, Bonanza, Saguache County, Colo. The climate and topography of this district arc similar to those of mining camps of the Rocky Mountain region that lie 9000 to 12,000 ft. above sea level. The district is at the northeasterly edge of the San Juan volcanic region, in which successive Tertiary lavas have built up a high plateau resting upon earlier sedimentary formations, or the underlying pre-Cambrian complex. The latter was exposed in places by erosion previous to the eruptions. In the Bonanza district, proper, only volcanic formations, andesites and latites, are found. Dr. H. B. Patton,1 in his survey of the district, discriminates between several varieties of lavas and maps these as distinct flows. They are local variations within the same lava and it is impossible to determine any distinct line of demarkation between them. Structurally they are members of the same flow. There are three general types of vein occurrences: 1. Lead-zinc-copper-silver-gold veins in well-defined fissures with a quartz gangue; ill these, the various sulfides show a zonal arrangement. 2. Massive gray copper ores high in silver, in irregular fractures in the form of small lenses and pockets, in which little or no quartz is found. 3. Manganiferous quartz veins very low in silver and gold at the surface which, with depth, become important silver veins containing subordinate amounts of gold. These veins have a quartz gangue with an abundance of Phodochrosite. The silver is associated with small amounts of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite; fluorite also is present. The Eagle is the only mine that has been developed in the manganiferous quartz type of vein. It was discovered ill the fall of 1582, but little more than assessment work was done on the property for a number of

Preplaced cable bolts - fully grouted old hoisting cables or stress relieved steel strands - have been used succesfully to pre- reinforce ore contact zones and pillars in sublevel stoping at Outo- kumpu Oy mines for ten years. The purpose is to make open stoping methods possible even in "poor'' conditions and to decrease waste rock dilution. Since 1971 more than 120 km cable bolting has been done, and plans for this year in five mines amount to 33 km. In order to understand the function of cable bolt, pull-out tests have been done both in the laboratory and in situ. Bond strength between cable and cement is highly dependent on cable structure and cable surface dirtiness. Steel cables with steel core and rough surface structure have highest bond strength ( 6 MP~). A cable bolt is a friction bolt. After losing its peak bond strength - after starting to move - a cable bolt still has a high loading capacity due to the friction caused by the uneven surface of the cable. Cable bolting is done before actual stoping from existing drifts, sublevel drifts, e.g. or from special bolting drifts. In general stress relieved steel strands are used; 2 x 15.2 mm dia per hole. FEM or BEM calculation is utilized in cable bolting design. Bolts 2 are in fan shape, 10 m ... 50 m long and are spaced 1/20 m ... 1/50 m2 at stope walls. Pretensioning of cable is not needed, when bolting is done before rock deformations. Bolting costs vary between 0.3 USD ... 1.0 USD/ore ton. In the beginning only manual cable installing technique bras used. Now bolting can be done as fully mechanized with the developed cable bolting machine; i.e. drilling of the hole, installing and cutting of cables and grouting of hole.

In making the original estimates for a report recommending the cyanidation of Ymir stamp-mill tailings, the writer was unable to find in any of the standard works on cyanide-practice certain data applicable to the local conditions; nor has he as yet seen quite the same practice recorded in the rapidly growing literature of cyanidation. To present these figures, together with a few novel features of local practice, the present paper is offered. The ore treated is obtained from a fissure-vein of steep dip, occurring in a slate country. The ore-body is lenticular in plan, swelling from 4 ft. in width at one end to a maximum of 42 ft., and tapering irregularly to less than 18 in., where payvalues cease. In the wider portions of the fissure the ore is mixed with more or less horse-matter from the walls. The clean ore is white, massive quartz, with from 8 to 12 per cent of sulphurets; the latter being pyrite, sphalerite and galena, the predominance being in the order given. The precious metal tenor is variable, the gold more closely following the pyrite, the silver the galena. The present mill-supply is practically all from below the oxidized zone. The unavoidable admixture of horse-matter and stope-filling with the ore as mined, affects more or less the character of the mill-feed, which sometimes contains from 10 to 25 per cent of slate. During the last three months of 1902, the mill-feed carried 0.3977 oz. gold and 1.903 oz. silver per ton of 2,000 lb., 2.65 per cent lead and 2.92 per cent zinc. IN A recent paper1 a detailed discussion is given of the possibilities. of using polarized light in the examination of opaque substances. The factors underlying the problem .are there treated from the viewpoint of the electromagnetic theory of light and the presentation is necessarily mathematical in form. The practical methods resulting from the discussion are, however, relatively simple and promise to be of value in the determination of certain ores and metals when studied in reflected light under the microscope. The results of the theoretical investigation referred to may be summarized by stating that in general the optical constants, such as refractive indices and absorption indices, cannot be satisfactorily ascertained on small, random, polished sections; that the use of polarized light enables. the observer ordinarily to determine whether the crystal plate is isotropic or anisotropic, and also to ascertain the degree of anisotropism; that for this purpose methods based either on the contrast in intensity between the two reflected components of non-polarized light, or on the amount of rotation of the plane of polarization, on reflection, of vertically incident, plane-polarized light, may be employed; that methods based on the phase difference between the two reflected components are in general of little value because of the small differences in phase which ordinarily result for a relatively large change in birefringence or biabsorption. The measurement of the optical properties of transparent minerals, even in minute irregular grains, is a simple task with modern petrographic microscope methods and is accomplished by petrologists as part of their ordinary routine work. But the determination of the optical constants of opaque substances is difficult and is rarely attempted; all observations are necessarily made in reflected light and are restricted commonly to the determination of color, of hardness, of the character of crystallization, and
