The problem of the crippled soldier in industry is not a problem of war work only; it is a problem of industrial development. As individuals, each one of you is seeking to provide our maimed heroes with such teaching as will render them, in the shortest possible amount of time, productive and satisfied members of the community. As individuals you are interested in the organizations that are preparing to receive these men, to train them and to place them at that work for which they are best fitted. As an organization, it is now your duty to take up the industrial end of the problem, to investigate existing conditions in the industries, to discover where the opportunities for employment lie, and so readjust industrial practice that the cripples may be utilized to their own and the community's good with the least shock to themselves or to the industries, and with the greatest amount of permanent benefit to all concerned. We have divided industrial opportunities suitable for cripples, roughly, into three classes. First, such as already exist in the industries, which can be set aside for cripples only, present occupants being transferred to other work for which they can be fitted but which is not suitable for cripple work; second, opportunities in the industrial world that, through changes in the working equipment or tools, or through appliances attached to the cripple himself, can make the cripple a competitor of the sound worker; third, opportunities not existing at present in the industries, but which could be introduced for the good of the community without placing the cripples into competition with any existing class of workers. As typical of the first type of occupations for cripples, we have mentioned that of store-keeper, of the second type that of typist,2 and of the third type that of dental nurse.3 The last occupation can be so arranged as to take from the overworked dentist the work of cleaning teeth; and

It is well known that different forms of carbon show differences in chemical behavior under apparently identical conditions. It is fairly well known that these differences persist, although to a lesser degree, in a single group of carbons, such as the anthracites of Pennsylvania. It is the purpose of this paper to show the extent of these variations for Pennsylvania anthracites from actual quantitative measurements of the amount of carbon dioxide reduced under the standardized test conditions employed. As the amount of carbon dioxide reduced to the monoxide (under comparative conditions termed, for convenience, the "reactivity") is important in combustion, gas production and metallurgy, it is hoped that this paper will be a useful contribution to the store of knowledge on these subjects. In carrying out the investigation, considerable time and thought were spent in obtaining what seemed to be the best possible design of apparatus. The next step consisted in making a number of trial runs on the same sample, varying temperature, particle diameter, etc. and then outlining a standardized procedure to be followed in testing all samples. Fifty anthracites were tested. As a matter of interest, some 10 miscellaneous samples were also tested. The data show initial reaction temperatures (abbreviated I.R.T.), reaction velocity constants at 900" and 950" C., some effects of added substances, and a few additional tests designed to throw some light on the causes of differences in reactivity. The sample of charcoal, as was anticipated, proved to be easily the most reactive of any sample tested. The anthracites as a group came second. The five samples of gas and by-product cokes, obtained from five different coke manufacturers, came third, and a single sample of Rhode Island anthracite ranked fourth, with respect to reactivity as above defined. TAKING into consideration the present state of geologic knowledge and present economic status of the oil industry, we have attempted to outline the six principal districts in which oil occurs and new pools may be expected. The map, Fig. 1, also shows the location of the present productive pools-about 100 in number. The unshaded areas represent territory where drilling depths to known sands are prohibitive with present development and pumping methods, or such sands are absent or give promise of such small production that deep wildcat tests are unwarranted. They include, also, territory where the oil-source materials are absent or not of the right type; and where shales are insufficient in the stratigraphic section to prevent the escape of oil and gas. Some doubtful districts are also included, such as the Pecos Valley, where the percentage of rigid beds, sandstones and limestones may be too great; and the Nacogdoches oil field, where small shallow production is obtained but where deep or large production is unlikely. The map is not offered as final but in the hope that it may prevent the expenditure of large sums in attempted development of unlikely territory and as the warning that those who drill in the unshaded territory do so at great risk. Those who drill in such territory should have large sums available for pioneering and experimenting and only attempt it if they can well afford to lose the money expended. Search in the shaded or cross-hatched areas is hazardous enough and should only be undertaken after detailed geologic surveys. Out of a total area of 256,000 sq. mi., the oil and gas districts comprise about 80,000 sq. mi.; the territory embraced in these districts is shown in the shaded portions. This may ultimately be increased somewhat by the addition of some minor districts, but such additions will be offset by territory probably now included in the unshaded areas. The shaded areas probably contain 98 per cent. or more of the ultimate production of the state, despite the fact that they represent only 31 per cent. of the total area.

THE region to which I have the pleasure of calling your attention, though limited in area, is remarkable for the quantity and purity of its mineral deposits, and in these respects it would be difficult to find its equal anywhere. IRON ORES. The red and brown hematites, pipe ore, and semi-magnetites, from which is made in charcoal furnaces the highest quality of iron for car-wheels, extend through the counties of Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, Wythe, Smyth, Washington, Bland, Tazewell, Russell, Scott, Lee, Floyd, Carroll, and Grayson, Virginia, and run over into Ashe County, North Carolina. One locality of semi-magnetite, in the centre of the great Giles County basin, has in sight, by actual measurement, 50,000 tons of ore, which, according to Prof. Fesquet, contains 69.74 per cent. of iron and no phosphorus. In the great brown-ore belt, which passes through the counties of Montgomery, Pulaski, Wythe, Smyth, and Washington, there is an extraordinary deposit of more than a million tons. A small section of this very long vein, on Cripple Creek, in the County of Wythe, yields an ore which, analyzed by Mr. James Aumann, gave the following results: Metallic iron, - 58.15 Water, - 12 96 Alumina, - 2.32 Silica, - 1.09 Phosphorus, - none. At one point towards the western end of Red Land Mountain, in Pulaski County, New River section, I measured a body of ore in this belt which will yield, to a depth of 150 feet, over 8,000,000 tons, and the deposit extends far below the 150 feet measured at the upper part. Again, at Rich Hill, near the mouth of Reed Island Creek, these veins show extraordinary surface development, giving an ore of very great purity. At numerous places, also, in the counties of Giles, Bland, Tazewell, Russell, Scott, Wise, and Lee, these brown and red iron ores are exposed in such vast quantities as to baffle both description and measurement. That of Chestnut Flat, in Giles County, back or west of the Angel's Rest Mountain, is an easily reducible ore, blood-red when crushed, of which there are fully 300,000 tons in sight. Diamond drilling has become a very important factor in mining. It is the most satisfactory method of obtaining proof of the existence of an orebody and of determining the character and extent of the body in measures where a core can be made. Large investments are based on the information obtained. The method of development, the mine and reduction plants, and subsidiary essentials established are often without other information. The Mond Nickel Co. has drilled about 50,000 ft. (15,240 m.) per yr. for sevéral years and has given considerable study to the question of improving the methods and of overcoming the limitations of this means of securing information. One of the main limitations of the diamond drill has been its inability to drill a straight hole. To depths of 1000 ft. (304 m.) the deflection is often not large but all holes tend to curve and take somewhat erratic courses. A hole running at a small angle to a fissure plane tends to run along the fissure. If the hole is at a large angle, the tendency is to penetrate the fissure plane at right angles. The face of the bit having one side in solid formation beyond the fissure, the other in the selvage of the fissure, tends to turn, the rods curving to the extent of their clearance in the hole. Usually rock measures have somewhat regular fissuring or strata and holes take somewhat similar courses, usually at right angles to the fissuring or strata. Excessive pressure or short or worn core barrels increase curvature. Slow speeds, correct feeds, sharp bits, and core barrels the full size of the bit, tend to decrease curvature but do not prevent it Curvature once started increases rapidly. The disappointments from crooked holes have been numerous. Discoveries have later been found to be on the properties of others. One Canadian company had a hole, supposedly discovering ore 300 ft. (91 m.) from old workings, unexpectedly turn in 8 ft. (2.4 m.) of wooden core from a timber in the old workings. Large, high, open stopes resulting from vertical crater retreat (VCR) and similar methods are usually filled with sand tailings to support the stope walls and make it possible to mine the pillars. The hydrostatic head resulting from these high stope fills demands extremely heavy bulkheads in the crosscuts to withstand the pres- sure. Occasionally, these bulkheads fail because there are no drains or the installed drains are inadequate. Costly flooding of the mine and loss of life result from these failures. With proper design of blanket drains and filters, the fill can be made failure-proof, requiring only a minimum bulkhead, designed specifically for zero water retention. The effectiveness of the blanket drains can be increased by laying perforated pipes on the bottom of the crosscut within the blanket drain. These drains can have a safety factor of 10 with minimal expense. When the water is properly drained, the hydrostatic pressure on the bulkhead is reduced to zero, leaving only the lateral pressure of the sand. This lateral pressure is partially dissipated by arching and shear against the crosscut walls and consolidation of the tailings as the water is drained. The bulkhead should be placed at least one cross-cut diameter back from the collar of the drawpoint.

Until recently, probably the best means of sampling airborne dusts has been the impinger method. Dust-laden air is drawn into a sampling tube, and the particulate matters separated from the air and collected in the liquid in the impinger. A sample of the suspension is prepared on a slide and counted through a projection microscope. This method is simple and reliable, but it does suffer drawbacks. Since the collected particles must be counted visually, results of the dust count are taken. This seriously impedes studying the effectiveness of dust inhibitors, such as water sprays, or making adjustments in equipment. Greatest disadvantage of all, however, is the tedious task of counting particles in the sample. With the growing desirability of taking more samples, the effort involved in making these counts is a real factor in the cost of dust control. Finally, it is generally recognized that impinger dust counts can be related to health hazard only for specific kinds of dust and under similar conditions. This is because the rather complex mechanism of dust damage depends so much on size distribution of the dust. Counts determined by impinger samples cover a limited size range that does not necessarily correlate with retention by the lungs and upper respiratory tract.

SINCE the very early work on quenched structures, where the products of the martensite transformation had been recognized, this transformation has provoked much interest and study. Theoretically it was desirable to account for the extreme changes in physical properties resulting from the formation of martensite, as that information might lead to results of practical importance. Desirable information, therefore, was on the kinetics of transformation from austenite to martensite as well as on the physical constitution of the martensite. It has been known for years that certain steels quenched to room temperature will contain persistent austenite as well as martensite. Other important and now well- established features of the martensite reaction are the progress of the reaction on cooling only and the independence of Ar" with cooling velocities exceeding the critical velocity. These facts have been experimentally determined by various methods and investigators. Notable among the early investigators were Tammann and Scheill and Wever and Engel.2 Unfortunately, all investigators did not fully interpret their results, which, coupled with several investigations that yielded conficting results, caused a state of confusion that was not clarified until quite recently. X-ray investigations of martensite in steels3-6 indicate it to be a supersaturated solid solution of carbon in alpha iron. This supersaturation is evident from the appearance of a body-centered tetragonal structure with the addition of sufficient carbon. The dimensions of this tetragonal structure are alinear function of the carbon content within the limits of accuracy of the determinations. Slight tempering of tetragonal martensite leads to the destruction of the tetragonal structure, which is converted to a body-centered cubic structure. This phenomenon has precipitated a controversy concerning the nature and mechanism of the tempering of martensite. The facts in the case have been outlined by Epstein7 and more recently by Antia, Fletcher, and Cohen.8 The significance of Ar" on theoretical grounds is not clear, however, although considerable study has been devoted to its determination. The precise position of Ar" as a function of carbon content was first stated by Greninger and Troianos for steels covering a range of approximately 0.7 to 1.8 per cent carbon. The effect of alloying elements on Ar" has recently been the subject matter of investigation by various methods.

COMPARED to many of the binary alloys of iron, Fe-Ir alloys have received very little tud.'' Virtually nothing is known about the Fe-Ir equilibrium diagram' except for a few details concerning the liquidus-solidus positions for dilute iron-based alloys. It is reported1 that the y to a transformation temperature in Fe-Ir alloys (up to 40 wt pct Ir) is composition-dependent, varying from -900°C for pure iron to 0" to 100°C for Fe-40 pct Ir in an almost linear manner. The y to a transformation appears to be reversible,' the transformation hysteresis width increasing with increasing iridium content. In a qualitative way, the composition dependence of the y to a (and vice versa) transformations appears similar to those in the widely studied Fe-Ni system. A shaft of 1690 m depth is currently being sunk to exploit a large copper sulphide orebody. The primary crusher chamber, main pump chamber and the other excavations on the crusher level were developed from the shaft during the sinking operation. The maximum principal stress is horizontal and has a magnitude twice that of the vertical stress. It increased linearly with depth and on the elevation of the crusher level, 1613 m below surface, the stresses induced by mining can exceed the strength of the rock. The development of a workable crusher level layout, and a crusher chamber design and support system are described. Excavation and support of the workings are detailed and a comparison of expected and actual results is made.

The relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen's compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent, of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent, or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also of his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics, compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa, to be due in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are due to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 21/2 years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management—in short were due to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. At present, tunnels can be driven in rock by either of two essentially different techniques, in one of which rock-breaking is accomplished by drilling and blasting and in the other by mechanical loading. The methods based on these techniques are comparable in terms of the rates at which tunnels may be advanced, although they differ widely in their range of applicability to different types of rock and lengths of tunnel. The method based on drilling and blasting has reached a high degree of development. It is applicable to even the hardest rocks and rates of advance in excess of 50 ft per day (fpd) are attainable. The main disadvantages of this method are that it involves a sequence of operations punctuated by blasting and that it is relatively uncontrolled, resulting in overbreaking the tunnel profile and damage to the surrounding rock. However, its flexibility, mobility, and low capital cost constitute real advantages in many situations, such as those involving short lengths of tunnel or low rates of advance. Tunneling machines based on mechanical breaking of the rock are a more recent development. They offer a continuous and controlled means of tunneling capable of rates of advance in excess of 100 fpd under favorable conditions. However, these machines weigh many tens of tons and consume several hundred horsepower, so that they are costly and lack mobility. At present, their applicability is limited to long tunnels in relatively soft rock where the high rates of advance and tunnel quality can offset their onerous capital cost. Many situations exist in which the superior quality of a machined tunnel and freedom from blasting would be real advantages, but where the rock is either too hard for existing machines or the length of the tunnel does not justify their capital cost: What are the possibilities of developing cheaper, more flexible, and mobile tunneling machines? Most existing tunneling machines fragment all the rock at the tunnel face to facilitate its disposal. A quantitative relationship between the allotropic phase boundaries of zirconium-base binary systenzs and the solute metallic valence is shown through an intermediate thermodynamic parameter. A simplified equation relating this parameter to the phase boundaries is briefly reviewed, and data from the literature are used to show the relationship of this parameter to the solute metallic valence. It has been reported that the solute metallic valence can be used as an index of phase stabilization in zirconium-base binary alloys.' It was shown that the algebraic sign of the slopes of the hcp/bcc phase boundaries of zirconium alloys correspond to the algebraic sign of the metallic valence of zirconium minus the metallic valence of the solute, or, in other words, a solute whose metallic valence is higher than that of the solvent tends to stabilize the high-temperature phase while one whose metallic valence is lower than that of the solvent tends to stabilize the low-temperature phase. Further analysis of the zirconium binary systems has revealed a quantitative relationship between the solute metallic valence and the relative slopes of the two-phase allotropic boundaries. This relationship involves a thermodynamic quantity whose significance can be seen in the following section. INTRODUCTION Dust control in coal preparation and related transport is a multi- faceted problem which must be anticipated whenever dry, fine coal is subject to rough handling which can disperse it in the air. This problem can be minimized by careful planning and proper design, by eliminating procedures which maximize dust production, and by utilizing the most appropriate dust-collection "hardware" for a given situation. Proper maintenance after dust-collection systems are installed is also very important, and will not only enable the selected equipment to perform properly, but will also reduce component wear, recover valuable product with the highest efficiency, provide cleaner and safer working conditions, and allow local clean-air standards to be met. This chapter is designed to provide basic information about dust control in relation to material processing and handling during coal preparation. Areas discussed should provide the reader with insight into basic dust-collection theory, particle behavior, equipment types, ductwork and hood considerations, general maintenance and design planning, and the economics of dust collection. Because of the wide range of areas covered and the various specialized problems inherent in each, the text is organized to be a practical reference, and not a complete, unabridged treatise of ventilation and dust-control design. Nevertheless, the information presented should be of value in both understanding and reducing problems of dust control in coal preparation.

As the work carried on by this Company, of which the writer has been in charge for the past two years, is somewhat unique, the following account of it may be of interest, and, on that account, is offered to the Institute without any attempt to claim this practice as the best. Mines. The mines supplying ore to the Company arc situated in three groups: the Guanaco field,.about 80 miles N.E. of the port of Taltal (lat. 25" S., long. 70" 30' W. of Greenwich); the Sierra Overa, about 63 miles S.W. of Taltal; and Paranao, about 42 miles due N. of Taltal (12 miles N. of the small town of Paposo, once famous for its copper-output). Guanaco. This field lies in the center of an absolutely waterless mountainous desert, where not a sign of vegetation can be found for miles. The dryness is such that ivory and horn crack and open, while raw-hide must be used in place of leather, which -would become worthless in a very short time. Water is brought about 21 miles by piping from the Cordillera, but only in small quantities, and costs in the Guanaco $7 (= $1.78 gold) per cubic meter. An approximate expression is obtained for the energy of a closed dislocation loop in equi1ibriu)n with a constant net stress. The result obtained is valid for loops in isotropic or anisotropzc materials provided that they are suJficiently large that the energy per unit length of a segment of the loop can be approximated by that of an infinite straight dislocation tangent to the loop. It is shown that this approximation leads to very close agreement with a more rigorous calculation of the elastic energy of a circular glide loop. The Gibbs-Wulff Form, GWF, of a dislocation is the closed planar loop which has the smallest elastic self-energy of all possible loops having the same Burgers vector and enclosing a fixed area, A.' The energy of such a loop is related to the net resolved shear stress* required to expand the loop and to the stress required to activate a Frank-Read source.223 In the following sectiorls the problem of determining the form of the GWF is discussed and an approximate method for calculating its elastic self-energy is presented. It is demonstrated that the approximations employed lead to no serious errors when applied to a calculation of the elastic energy of a circular glide loop. This method is then used to obtain a closed form expression for the energy of GWFs in isotropic and anisotropic materials. THEORY Burton, Frank, and cabrera4 have proved that the relationship of the equilibrium shape of a two-dimensional array of atoms under the influence of the Gibbs free energy associated with unit length of its boundary, G(O), is that the polar plot of G(0) vs 0 is proportional to the pedal of the GWF.* The angle 0 is measured "The pedal of the polar graph ofG(0) vs0 is the envelope of tangents to the eraph.relative to some crystallographic reference direction. The difficulty in applying this result to a closed dislocation loop arises from the self-interaction of the loop. For a dislocation the energy analogous to G(0) is a function of the total configurati~n.~ Consequently the relation which determines the GWF is an integro-differential equation rather than the simple differen- tial equation which results when G(8) is a function of 0 alone. Mitchell and smialek3 and Brown~ have used the self-stress concept introduced by ~rown' to calculate the shapes of dislocations in equilibrium with an applied stress. In this approach the glide force on an element of the dislocation loop due to the interaction of the element with the rest of the loop is equated to the glide force exerted by the local applied stress. The shape of the loop is then adjusted so that the two forces above are equal at all points on the loop. It is possible to calculate the energies of such loops by noting that, for equilibrium with an applied stress, the energy is equal to pijbiAj (summation convention) where bi is the Burgers vector, p.. is the local net stress tensor, and Ai is a vector directed perpendicular to the plane of thd loop with magnitude equal to the area of the loop. Also Brown' has calculated the energy of a hypothetical polygonal GWF using the above technique and anisotropic elasticity. However, his indicated solution for the energy in the general case of an arbitrary GWF is only slightly less involved than an iterative solution of the integrodifferential equation referred to earlier. In the present work the approximation employed by DeWit and Koehler' is used to calculate the energy of a closed loop in equilibrium with an applied stress. That is, the energy of a loop segment, ds, is approximated by the product of ds and the energy per unit length of an infinite, straight dislocation in a cylinder coaxial with the tangent to the loop at the angular position of the segment. This is known as the "line tension" approximation. The inner cutoff radius of the elastic solution defines the core radius, while the outer cutoff radius is determined by some characteristic dimension of the loop. Actually, both of these radii vary with the edge-screw character of the segment. The effective core radius changes because of the orientation dependence of the Peierls width of a dislocation,8 and the outer radius should be the radial distance from the circumference of the loop to the center of symmetry of the area enclosed by the loop.g However, since the energy varies logarithmically with the ratio of these radii while depending directly on the effective elastic constants, only the effect of the latter is considered. This approximation also neglects the self-interaction of the loop segments. For small loops this will doubtless be extremely important, but for large glide loops produced by plastic deformation the self-interaction is not nearly so important in determining the energy of the loop. This point is illustrated by the following calculation of the energy of a circular loop. Consider a circular loop of radius R which lies in the XI - x, plane of an infinite isotropic continuum and whose Burgers vector makes an angle $ with xs. Restricted production intentionally caused by ,owners, managers, or labor; 4. Lost production caused by ill-health, physical defects and industrial accidents. The committee sent out elaborate questionnaires, and in them divided the responsibility into Manage-ment, Labor, and Outside Contracts. These question-naires showed that in the different industries examined the responsibility of Management was from 50 to 80 per cent. and of Labor from 9 to 28 per cent. The percentage of responsibility that Management was held accountable for was much larger than any of us supposed. However, when this question is studied, we realize how necessary it is to select, in the first instance, suitable personnel, in the form of directors, managers, heads of departments, experts, etc. We would like to -believe that the percentage of responsibility of Management for waste in the mining business was less than that quoted above, but there are so many mining properties started up and operated by men of no experience in such lines, and there have been so many improvements in late years in mining and metallurgical methods not taken advantage of, that we can not believe that. the percentage will vary much from that already quoted. Of late considerable experimental and theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure formation and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloy1-9† although two investigations have been made on copper alloys10*". That such work may be of considerable practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fur Eisen-for~chung'13, 14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-hardening principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16, 17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At suberitical temperatures above Ar" (temperature of martensite formation) where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. Davenport and Bain' find that different sorts of atoms in solid solution in gamma iron affect the length of this " prereaction" period differently, manganese probably being the most effective in lengthening it. It is very difficult to believe that nothing occurs within these "prereaction" regions, for if this were so there is no reason why any reaction at all should be observed. The piping and segregation of ingots of steel is a comprehensive subject, and must be studied in reference to the different grades of soft, medium, and hard steel, rather than to discuss it in a general manner, as though applicable to all grades. Rail steel, however, will receive the most consideration in this paper, for the wheel-loads of the motive power and rolling stock have doubled from 1890 to 1910. Steel rails and tires which were efficient under the light loads, became less serviceable under the double wheel-loads, quadrupled tonnage, and higher speeds. Bessemer Steel. Bessemer steel of from 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. of carbon, for splice-bars, spikes, and tie-plates, rises in setting, and is cast in bottle-mouthed molds, which must be capped to prevent an overflow from the top. This grade of steel rises in the molds and makes a longer ingot than the volume of molten steel when first teemed. The ingots which are allowed to cool and then cut open, show, particularly in the upper part, large occluded blow-holes, and when they are not oxidized or do not contain foreign matter, weld more or less completely when the steel is rolled or forged above 1,100° C., and it is in this way that the blow-holes are closed in the low-carbon steels. Boiler-Plate and Fire-Box Steel. These grades often contain more or less minute laminations, which are the remains of small blow-holes forming after the setting metal has reached a pasty condition. The blow-holes in the low-carbon steels have not been prevented by usiug deox-idizers, though the ingots are slightly improved so far as the soundness of the steel is concerned. This grade of steel also rises in the molds in setting.
