It is the purpose of this paper to present data on brines occurring in the Frio formation of the Texas Gulf Coast, and to show how their composition varies, (1) with depth below the surface, (2) with depth below the top of the formation, and (3) along the approximate strike. The brines vary in chloride content from 3,180 to 73,000 p.p.m., though the average salinity of the salt waters is shown to vary with total depth; the concentration being 35,000 to 40,000 p.p.m. at 3500 to 5500 ft., slightly less than 50,000 p.p.m. chloride at 5500 to 6500 ft. and average 38,000 to 40,000 below 6500 feet. From the analyses available, it appears that the highest concentration of salts occurs in the upper 300 ft. of the formation, while lower salinity is found with increasing depth below this point. The salt waters from wells in Starr County show less concentration of dissolved salts than in any other group of wells farther north along the strike. In all, 116 analyses from 63 fields and 14 wildcats, from depths ranging from 1300 to 11,400 ft. below the surface and from z to 3240 ft. below the top of the Frio, are recorded. Introduction Brines have been studied for many Years in an attempt to solve some of the geologic and production problems associated with the production of oil and gas. One practical application of study of . water analyses is the correlation of waters occurring above, in, or below the producing sand in the same field or throughout the same formation. The Frio formation, the series of sands and shales occurring below the Marginulina zone and above the Vicksburg, is one of the major oil and gas-producing formations in the Texas Gulf Coast. Fossils are rare or absent in the upper Frio throughout most of the area. When available, cuttings and cores, and electric logs were used to determine the top of the Frio. A change in lithology was used to determine this point in most of the wells, and fossils were used in some of the deep wells. It is realized that a change in lithology is not perfect for correlation purposes over long distances and some of the trends may be influenced by the inability to differentiate between the nonfossiliferous Marginulina zone and the Frio. It underlies virtually all the area shown on the accompanying map (Fig. I). Although it is not productive in the updip facies, it has been explored to a limited degree below I2,000 ft. Further more, toward the coast line future drilling to deeper depths should encounter this formation. Although thousands of wells have penetrated or drilled entirely through the formation, very few water samples have been secured from the many sands occurring in this formation and analyzed. THE preparation of a sufficient quantity of high-purity copper for extensive laboratory use in the study of impurity effects has been an integral part of a research program in progress at the Central Research Laboratory of the American Smelting and Refining Co. for the past several years. Initially the degree of purity desired was that necessary to meet two essential requirements for experimental accuracy: (I) no impurity was to be present in the copper in an amount capable of producing a detectable effect on the properties to be studied, (2) even the minor changes in properties caused by the addition of extremely small amounts of individual elements were to be measured without significant interference from contaminants. In the course of the investigation, evidence has accumulated to justify the conclusion that this copper is of exceptional purity; in fact, no impurity can be detected by any chemical method or spectrographic technique known to the authors. The present paper describes the method of production of the copper and presents some of its properties. PREPARATION OF HIGH-PURITY COPPER The elimination of impurities from commercial electrolytic copper is accomplished by a three-step purification process. The first operation consists of an electrolysis through a purified CuS04-H2SO4 electrolyte using bagged anodes, low current .density (5 amp. per sq. ft.) and low temperature (25°C. max.). The electrolyte is prepared from commercial Cu2SO4 and is purified by heating the solution and adding I gram Fe as Fe 2(S04)3 to each 100 grams dissolved copper; sufficient hydrated oxide of copper, prepared from Cu2SO4 and NaOH, is supplied to precipitate Fe(OH)3, which carries down arsenic, antimony, tin, selenium, tellurium and other minor constituents. Silver and remaining traces of lead are removed by addition of Na2S to the acidified filtrate, which is then refiltered after standing hot overnight. The cold solution is made up to 30 grams per liter Cu and 150 grams per liter H2S04 and introduced without addition agents into the electrolytic system, which consists of a double row of hard-rubber battery boxes with the inside webbing and partitions removed, arranged in seven steps of ascending height. Electrolyte is uniformly supplied to the two highest cells by glass siphons operating from a constant-level reservoir, and flows by gravity through the bank of seven cells, entering each at the bottom and leaving at the top. Glass air lifts continuously supply the returning liquid to the constant-level reservoir for recirculation. Each cell contains three 434 by 43a by I-in anodes cast from high-quality electrolytic wire bar copper, various lots of which have been used with equal success. The anodes are pinned to sheet copper hangars shaped to prevent crawl of the electrolyte to the multiple-wired bus bars-which would result in fouling of the contacts and hang inside wool flannel bags stretched over open wood frames. Arsenical gold ores occur in many parts of the world, including numerous mines in Canada and the western United States. Free gold is often finely disseminated in the grains of sulfide minerals, arsenopyrite, pyrite, orpiment and realgar. Generally a sulfide concentrate is produced by flotation. Arsenical ores or concentrates are not amenable to direct cyanidation and therefore are considered refractory. A wide variety of roasting equipment and conditions have been used by the mills to remove arsenic and sulfur from these concentrates. The resulting calcine is easy to cyanide and gold is recovered from the cyanide solution by zinc dust cementation. Room-temperature potential-pH diagrams and high-temperature phasestability diagrams are presented to discuss the chemistry of the gold cyanidation, cementation, and roasting steps in the presence of arsenic. The environmental aspects of arsenic discharge are also included.

Introduction In underground mining operations the effects of economic and mechanical factors on costs and profits can readily be appreciated and can perhaps be expressed in exact figures and percentages. Less apparent, but frequently more important, is the influence of physical stress. Stress causes failure of supports, collapse of openings, rockbursts, and other damage which directly affects the costs of maintenance, and also to a certain extent the accident rate. Stress can, however, if properly directed, be an aid to mining operations. The caving methods in metal mining and the long-wall method in coal mining are well-known examples. In large-scale mining operations it is almost impossible to neglect stress-control. A better understanding of the mechanism of rock pressure and the application of its principles to practical mining will inevitably lead to a reduction in operating costs. Many theories have been advanced to give the mining engineer a practical outline for stress-control but, although today most experts agree upon the principles of stress distribution around underground openings, there is still no generally accepted theory that explains all phenomena. The main reasons for this incomplete understanding of the problem are the lack of accurate knowledge of the physical properties of rocks under field conditions, and the great complexity of these conditions due to in-homogeneity of the rock, stratification, tectonic disturbances, and many other unknown factors. The research on the rock pressure problems has, however, yielded some valuable facts which, expressed in practical terms, and adapted to local conditions, may become a valuable aid for mining operations. The purpose of this paper is to give a review of the most important accomplishments of this research with respect to the stress phenomena around small underground openings, such as tunnels and shafts, so as to arrive at an outline of the problem as it stands today. Special emphasis is placed on a new theory by the German mining engineer, Rudolf Fenner, which has never before been published or discussed in English. The Pressure Dome Theory The formation of a dome-shaped space around underground openings is well known from field observations. When openings are made in rock under stress, the rock in the top of the openings will often fail, and caving will continue until the openings have assumed a dome-shaped form, after which equilibrium apparently is re-established. The oldest theory which attempted to explain the phenomenon is the "beam" theory, which postulates that the hanging wall consists of stratified measures that behave as independent beams with fixed ends and a uniformly distributed load. The annealing behavior and the mechanism of re-orientation during recrystallization of iodide titanium cold-rolled 94 pct have been studied in detail. Results indicate that recrystallization occurs by the nucleation and growth of new grains, as in other common metals. Recrystallization nuclei form by the coalescence of subgraim, and the change in texture as a result of recrystallization is largely due to selective growth among the nuclei formed. The annealing of titanium is characterized by a wide range of overlap of the various stages of the annealing process, which may be responsible for a range of activation energies observed, and for the apparently gradual change in the annealing texture as a function of time or temperature. The deformation and recrystallization characteristics of titanium and zirconium are very similar. In cold-rolled strip, the deformation texture consists of two symmetrically oriented components, each having the basal plane laterally tilted at about 30 deg from the rolling plane and the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction. Upon annealing for recrystallization, the change in texture can be described, for simplicity,* as rotations around [0001].2'6'8 According to McGeary and Lustman,' recrystallization occurs in zirconium through normal growth of the subgrains, which they called "domains", without the nucleation of new grains; and the magnitude of rotation around the [0001] axis increases gradually during the progress of recrystallization. If these conclusions were true, the mechanism of recrystallization in zirconium would be basically different from that in most metals, since it is commonly known that recrystallization with reori-entation always involves the migration of high-angle boundaries. In an attempt to clarify the situation, the mechanism of reorientation during recrystallization in iodide titanium cold-rolled 94 pct was studied in detail. The structural and textural changes upon annealing at various temperatures were examined by optical and transmission-electron microscopy, X-ray pole figures, pole density distribution measurements, and micro-beam techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material and Specimen Preparation. An iodide titanium crystal bar was are-melted and solidified in a cold-hearth crucible under a purified argon atmosphere. The solidified ingot had dimensions of approximately 3 by 1/2 by 3 in. One face of the ingot was somewhat uneven, but was as clean and shiny as the remaining parts of the ingot. Large grains with a Widmanstatten internal structure were clearly shown on the shiny surfaces, indicating the occurrence of P — a transformation upon rapid cooling from the melt. Analysis of the are-melted ingot indicated C 0.033, N 0.010, H 0.013, 0 0.002 in weight percent, and traces of iron, copper, and silicon as detectable impurities. The ingot was cold-rolled -40 pct to 0.300 in. thick with a reduction of 0.005 in. per pass. The defects on the uneven side of the ingot were then removed by machining. This reduced the thickness to 0.285 in. The piece was then recrystallized by annealing at 800°C for 1 hr in a fused silica boat charged into a fused silica tube furnace under a vacuum of 10~5 mm Hg. To refine the grain size, the recrystallized metal was again cold-rolled 40 pct to 0.170 in., then annealed at 700°C for 1 hr. These treatments yielded a strip with a uniform equiaxed grain structure, having a penultimate average grain diameter of 0.04 mm and a hardness of approximately 90 Dph. Final rolling reduced the thickness from 0.170 to 0.010 in., corresponding to a reduction of 94 pct. The strip was rolled in both directions by reversing end for end between passes. Surface lubrication was provided by oil-soaked pads attached to both rolls. Specimens of 1 in. length (for X-ray examinations) and +in. length (for hardness and microstructure examinations) were cut from the rolled strip, and a width of & in. was cut from the edges of each specimen by a jeweler's saw. These specimens were then etched in a solution of 10 cu cm HN03, 5 cu cm HF, and 50 cu cm H,O to 0.008 in. thick to remove the surface metal, as well as the distorted metal at the saw cuts, prior to annealing or measurements. To minimize any surface reaction with the atmosphere, all specimens were kept in an evacuated desiccator. Isothermal Anneals. All annealing treatments were conducted in vacuum in a fused silica tube furnace as described earlier. The temperature of the furnace was controlled to within *2"C. The specimen was placed in a fused silica boat, then pushed into the hot zone of the furnace. It took about 5 to 6 min for the specimen to reach the furnace temperature. After the specimen was held at temperature for a desired length of time the boat was pulled to the cold zone of the furnace; the heating-up period was excluded from the isothermal annealing time. Thus, the uncertainty in annealing time is higher for very short anneals, but negligible for long anneals.

Cyclic voltammetry and surface potential (photovoltage) measurements have been carried out on galena electrodes in sodium tetraborate solutions with added HC1 and NaOH to adjust the pH over the range 2 to 13. The first technique shows that the surface species formed on moderate anodic polarization and reduced on subsequent cathodic polarization are the same over the entire pH range. At anodic potentials, a soluble metal species and excess sulfur are formed; at cathodic potentials, sulfur is reduced to a soluble species. More importantly, excess surface sulfur is formed spontaneously under zero current conditions in alkaline solutions. This has been shown to occur on both polished surfaces and on virgin surfaces produced by in situ cleavage under the electrolyte. The photovoltage gives some insight into the charge and potential distribution at the galena surface. This is found to depend on past electrochemical history and the n- or p-type semiconducting character of the electrode and is interpreted in terms of changes in the surface stoichiometry that occur during reduction or oxidation. The effect of surface stoichiometry on subsequent xanthate interactions is discussed.

Fatigrle of ionic crystals has been studied primarily in magnesinm oxide. under cyclic stress dislocations move irrreversibly; they multiply; slip bands form and grow; cracks mucleate and propagnte, and failure occurs. The use of ionic crystals such as MgO is advantageorus in such investigations because they are optically transparent. Individual dislocation Intersections with {100} surfaces may be observed with a standard microscope, using etch-pit techniques. Slip, deformation, crack .formation, and fracture in MgO crystals under cyclic stress are compared with cotrresponditzg processes in metals. ThE effect of cyclic loading in metals has been studied for many years. The appearance of slip lines is readily observed and the ensuing fracture may also be seen. From these observations it is possible to predict the behavior of a material and make an educated guess as to what is happening internally, but the actual changes taking place within the structure are not readily apparent. If one could obtain a material in which the individual glide components could be observed, it would be invaluable in determining the actual slip distribution resulting from cyclic loading as well as the distribution of slip in the neighborhood of a growing crack. The following table shows the shipments from the four Lake Superior iron-ore districts during the year 1887, and their total outputs from their beginning until the close of 1887.* It will be noted that the Menominee district is second in importance in its total output tonnage to the close of the year 1887. These ore deposits are found in jasper-slates and in the horizon between these and their associated clay-slates; in the latter they are true contact-deposits. They are found in this jasper- and clay-slate formation under varied conditions, yet, in all, certain characteristic laws are preserved. The angle of dip varies from 15° to 20°, and up to 85° and even 90°, with the horizon. The ore is rather soft, bluish-black in color, and is a hematite. It varies in thickness from a few inches to one hundred feet, or more. It is mainly "Bessemer" ore, containing 57 to 63 per cent, of metallic iron, and .03 to .07 per cent, of phosphorus. In the mining nomenclature of this range two conditions of the ore-lens are described by the terms "dip" and "pitch." The former is in common use in defining the relation of the ore-plane to the horizon ; the latter indicates the posture of the ore-body as it inclines east or west from its position at the opening of the mine. Now that a determined public effort is being made on this side of the Atlantic to create a steel ship-building industry, the materials that are demanded for this purpose assume a new interest to the American metallurgist. In the past, the uses of metals in this country have been almost exclusively connected with the land, while in England their application to marine purposes has been equal in importance to that on shore. In the future the same should be the case here. This is the reason for bringing a somewhat nautical or rather naval topic before a body the chief interests of which are supposed to lie in the mines and mountains of the interior of the country. A modern war-ship or " ocean-grayhound" (like the City of Paris) is an epitome of philosophy and human skill. In her graceful lines we have, as Ruskin might quaintly say, a " builded geometry ;" while in her wonderful machinery for motion, offensive and defensive, we have the summation of the ideas of a host of students who have, at one time or another, during the course of a hundred years of her evolution, contributed their intellectual mites to render her a thing of beauty and of power. Two outstanding factors characterize most undertakings in the mineral industries: (1) mineral deposits are not equally distributed over the earth but are localized by natural processes, and (2) the mineral industries are largely based upon wasting assets. Neither of these factors is invariably true, for a few mineral materials, such as water, are essentially world-wide and others are replaced periodically by processes not unlike crop production. Indeed, with some, such as the salts in the sea, the supply is cyclic in short or long periods, whereas others, like water, though locally or periodically in short supply, are essentially inexhaustible. But to the extent that most minerals are limited to certain areas and are "permanently" consumed, any industry founded upon them, by implication, demands great care in planning for the most effective extraction-the essence of wise and conservative expenditure. Several less unusual yet also truly fundamental factors in the economics of the mineral industry are those involving (1) the various kinds and properties of mineral materials, which influence their use; (2) their geologic and geographic availability; and (3) the 'techniques unique to their discovery, exploration, and utilization. This chapter is designed primarily as a brief background for later ones and as a summary of the several unusual or at least special factors and of their effect upon the economics of the mineral industry. The social and political and especially the economic aspects of the industry are the main subjects of this volume and are dealt with in extended fashion in subsequent chapters. Not long ago a few acres of coal-land in the Connellsville region of Pennsylvania were sold at the rate of $1500 per acre. While this was doubtless a " fancy " price, affected by some consideration other than that of the simple value of the coal in the tract. it may fairly be taken as an indication of a progressive and already perceptible diminution in the economically available coal-resources of that famous region. This piesent and prospective development emphasizes the cominercial importance of producing, from the inferior coals of other districts, coke suitable for use in the blast-furnace. Many of the bituminous coals of the United States would meet this requirement if sufficiently freed, before coking, from slate and sulphur, and, so far as the removal of slate is concerned, the problem is not specially difficult. There are many forms of trough-, jig- and gravity-washers which easily and cheaply reduce the slate from as much as 20 per cent. in the coal to as little as 8 per cent. in the coke. But to reduce the sulphur from 4 per cent. in the coal (a proportion sometimes encountered) to 1 per cent. or less in the coke (the proportion demanded by the furnace-manager) is not so easy. It may be safely assumed as familiarly known to members of the Institute interested in this subject that, of the three forms in which sulphur usually exists in coal (hydrogen sulphide, calcium sulphate and pyrite), the pyrite is the one to be removed, RS far as possible, by mechanical treatment before coking. THE object of this paper is to record and interpret data collected during the examination of over 250 barite deposits in the Central Mineral District of Missouri. [ ] In the course of this study, the origin of the deposits, which the author believes to be hydrothermal, has been given particular attention. Economic barite deposits occur in two main areas in Missouri: (I) in the Washington County District of Southeast Missouri, from which over go pct of the state's production is derived; and (2) in the Central Mineral District, which includes portions of 15 counties in Central Missouri (Fig I). Discussion of the paper of R. P. Burrows, presented `at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 107, November, 1915, pp. 2237 to 2245. EDWIN M. CHANCE, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-I have been very much interested in the comprehensive and able discussion of the important topic of mine lighting just given by Mr. Burrows, especially as I know by common report Mr. Burrows' ability and his close touch with the development of the electric mine lamp, and its use in mines in connection with a portable electric lamp. It is regrettable that Mr: Burrows was not able to acquaint himself more closely with the cost of mine illumination, the actual cost, as produced by a portable light as carried by miners, whether a flame safety lamp or an open light. Had he been able to acquaint himself more closely with these data, he perhaps would not have arrived at some of the conclusions which he has presented to us in his paper. For example, we find Mr. Burrows advises that the open torch is by far the cheapest source of illumination, as produced by a portable light. I am very sure that is not the fact. The cost of miners' oil varies from about 25.c. a gallon to 90b. a gallon. The various States have passed laws from time to time rendering it mandatory that the miner shall use, whether he is willing or not, a so-called better or higher grade of burning oil. These laws have entailed the use of an oil so expensive that the use of the oil torch has become practically impossible, and the acetylene or carbide miners' lamp has largely taken its place. I have evolved a few figures showing the relative efficiency and usefulness of the open oil torch and the acetylene miners' lamp. For example, the acetylene miners' lamp consumes or burns 4 liters of acetylene per hour, or 0.14 cu. ft.; the oxygen consumed is 10 liters, or 0.35 cu. ft. per hour; air consumed, 50 liters, or 1.76 cu. ft. per hour; black-damp produced, 40 liters, or 1.41 cu. ft. per hour; air rendered extinctive to the acetylene flame, 112 liters, or 3.95 cu. ft. per hour; carbide con- sumed, 13 g. per hour. The open oil torch, on the other hand, burns about 20 g. of oil per hour; the oxygen consumed is 48 liters, or 1.69 cu. ft. per. hour; air consumed, 240 liters, or 8.47 cu. ft. per hour; blackdamp produced, 191 liters, or 6.73 cu. ft. per hour; air rendered extinctive to oil flame is 1,413 liters, or 49.92 cu. ft. per hour.

Experimentation with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures at three underground salt mines revealed its excellent applications at those properties. The author relates the present blasting practice used at these mines by the Intemzational Salt Co. The International Salt Company is presently performing blasting operations with a pneumatically -placed ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture at three rock salt mines, and plans its use in the near future at its new Cleveland mine. Use of ammonium nitrate is saving the company approximately $250,000 annually. With rapidly increasing operating expenses and increasing competitive pressure resulting in lower prices, savings such as those realized through the use of ammonium nitrate are vitally important. ORIGINAL INVESTIGATION AND EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITIES The three mines presently involved are located at Detroit, Mich.; Avery Island, La.; and Retsof, N. Y. Initial experiments were conducted at the Detroit mine where a detailed investigation was carried on to determine the significance of the static electricity factor when blowing ammonium nitrate into drill holes in which millisecond delay electric blasting caps had been placed. Although the information developed at the Detroit mine was passed along to the other mines, each mine independently pursued its own course of inves- tigation. This fact, plus the differing mining conditions, resulted in slightly different operational procedures at each mine. Some of the varying statistical data are shown in Table I, and data common to all three International Salt Company mines are shown in Table 11. BLASTING PROCEDURE AT THE DETROIT MINE This mine has been using the ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture for more than two years on a full time production basis and represents the successful detonation of several hundred thousand holes. Results have been excellent and the blasting cost has been reduced many times. The actual operation at Detroit consists of adding the fuel oil to the bags of ammonium nitrate by means of a portable fuel oil tank complete with hose, nozzle, and metering device. The bags of the ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture are transported to the working face from the oiling area by means of a jeep-drawn trailer. At the face, the ammonium nitrate is placed on the elevating platform of a powder-load ing rig which consists of a pneumatically-tired, large fork-lift truck with a fully insulated elevating platform constructed on the forks. The placement of the dynamite primer and the pneumatic placement of the ammonium nitrate is a two-man operation. First, one cartridge of the primer is placed in each hole on the line of holes which can be reached from the loading rig platform. SILICON, germanium, and tin occur with both the white tine-type structure and the diamond cubic structure. In the latter form these elements are semiconductors; in the former they are metallic. The metallic form of germanium and silicon is obtained only under high pressure.' For all three elements the transition from the semiconductor to the metallic state is accompanied by a decrease in the atomic volume of somewhat more than 20 pctily2 Table I. Dr. Maurer has reviewed the large and confused field of rock mechanics and drilling. We have focused our attention on advance drilling and the disengagement of rock. To understand drilling in greater detail is certainly desirable, but such understanding does not necessarily hold any certain promise of near-term practical advancement. In the longer term, it is probably essential. Present work on drilling and our understanding of drilling falls roughly into three separate classes (and, indeed, these are in no way peculiar to drilling): 1) we have knowledge of certain (scientific) topics which seem to be relevant to the process, 2) we have knowledge of the drilling process in both qualitative and quantitative terms from observation of the actual process, and 3) we have certain modeling procedures, by which we bridge the gap between these two previous areas. The usefulness of our scientific knowledge depends critically upon this last item. In all our following remarks we shall consider only those problems of drilling and the disengagement of rock in which the rock behavior is essentially brittle. Let us start by examining some of the problems of constructing an even moderately detailed theoretical model of the drilling process in the small. The prospects of any near-term success in that direction seem extremely meagre; nor is it clear that any great advancement in the practical art of drilling is even likely to result from the construction of such a detailed model. INTRODUCTION It is recognized that, for a variety of reasons, some companies in the mineral industry today are by no means cash-rich and, in fact, are reporting a growing proportion of long-term debt in their capital structures. A review of recent balance sheets of small, medium-size, and some larger companies, indicates that a fair number still have substantial positions in cash equivalents such as U.S. government issues and other short-term money market instruments. In part, this paper concerns itself with companies which have sufficient cash and equivalents and/or cash generation to internally finance mining projects or expansions but which, for some reason, choose to borrow funds. Misconceptions which appear to frequently underlie so-called "leveraging" decisions are explored in this paper. Also considered are those circumstances under which any company, including one that is cash-rich, should consider borrowing for a project in an amount beyond what would otherwise be necessary based upon its internal financing ability. I do not 'attempt to cover the raising of equity capital in public markets in this paper. IN discussing the influence of a content of gases on metals and alloys we should probably first consider the physical and chemical conditions under which these gases may be present. By a chemical analysis, such as the total extraction of gases from the liquid metal by melting in a graphite crucible in vacuo, we find only the sum of gaseous chemical elements contained in the metal in any form and no reference is made to the special form under which they have been present previously. CONDITION OF GASES IN METALS In considering gases . in metals we may first turn our attention to gases simply dissolved. Because the solubility of almost any gas decreases suddenly at the freezing point, most of them are released during solidification, developing rise of ingots and blowholes. If only a little gas is dissolved in the molten metal the size of such blowholes may be miscroscopical, or even submicroscopical, resulting in a certain reduction of the notched-bar impact test values. Hydrogen is believed to become less soluble as the temperature is lowered and therefore increasing quantities of this gas may be evolved during cooling between the freezing point and room temperature, leading to unsoundness of the ingot at weak spots; i.e., at the grain boundaries. This gas at the grain boundaries probably is present at high pressure and therefore impairs the mechanical properties to a degree similar to that found in the hydrogen embrittlement of copper. Usually we may trace such gases by observing rising ingots, or at least by the formation of a characteristic pattern of small grooves upon etching.

The relationships describing the enhancement of permeability by firing explosives in boreholes have been derived and combined to yield permeability enhancement as, [ ] or the case in which the stress decays asymptotically as a power law kc and nc represent permeability and fracture density at the edge of the pulverized region near the cavity wall, f is a geometric attenuation factor, m is the dissipation due to real material effects, ko is the original permeability and rd is the scaled radius. This relationship has been compared with available measurements from the American nuclear shot "Hardhat", the French nuclear events in Hoggar granite and the chemical explosive shot in coal near Kemmerer, Wyoming. Significant correlation between this theory and the experimental measurement is observed. A comparison between single and multiple detonations shows that permeability enhancement falls off steeply near the shot; however enhancement can be considerable midway between two shots spaced 10 cavity radii apart. The degree to which enhancement, can be significant depends on material properties and fracture density. Porosity distribution from the explosive 1s the dominate parameter in permeability enhancement. Existing theories of permeability enhancement have also been reviewed.

In a previous paper (ante, p. 411) some description was given of the occurrence of the auriferous alluvium, extensive deposits of which lie among the highlands of the province of Otago, New Zealand. The present paper will describe some of the methods by which that alluvium is exploited. The alluvial mining of New Zealand is not yet hindered by " debris legislation." The mines are for the most part situated in a country of little agricultural value, and large rivers with rapid currents act as tailings conveyors. In time, however, steps will have to be taken to restrict the discharge into the Clutha of the tailings which are slowly raising the river-bottom. The methods of California have been followed in Otago with such alterations as peculiar local conditions require. The distinctive feature of the alluvial mining of Otago is the prominence given to the hydraulic elevator. The all-important factor in this form of mining is the control of an abundant water-supply at a suitable height above the level where it is to be utilized; and in this respect the gold-fields of the south island of New Zealand are most favora-
