One of the main criteria used to rate the heat-resisting properties of alloys is stress rupture.' During a stress-rupture test a tensile specimen is held under a constant load at a constant temperature until it fractures. The chief measurement made during this test is the time requird for rupture at the specific test stress and temperature. It was found empirically from a series of stress-rupture tests at a constant temperature that when the logarithm of the time for rupture is plotted against the logarithm of stress a straight line is obtained within experimental error This method of showing stress-rupture data has been adopted by many investigators and the NACA.' By interpolation and extrapolation from these plots, values of the stresses required to rupture the specimens (the rupture strengths) in 10, roo, and 1000 hr are obtained for specific temperatures. Alloys are then rated for a particular application on the basis of their rupture strengths at the rupture life that most nearly represents the application. Inasmuch as stress rupture is an important criterion in rating heat-resisting alloys, it would be advantageous to know the quantitative dependence of the time lor rupture on stress, temperature, composition, and structure. In order to obtain this information, an investigation was made at the NACA Cleveland laboratory during the spring of 1945. The theory of rate processes was used because it has been found to apply to certain processes such as chemical reactions, viscous flow, and creep that occur at a definite rate for given conditions. It was thought that stress rupture was such a process. An equation was derived that gives, for a given composition and structure, the dependence of the time for rupture on stress and temperature. The investigation is part of a general program to provide information that will lead ultimately to the development of better alloys in order that the efliciency and power output of gas turbines used in aircraft propulsion can be increased. Theory The theory of rate processes will first be discussed as a general theory. It will then be shown that if stress rupture of heat-resisting alloys can be treated as a rate process, certain equations must be satisfied. Later sections will then show that these equations are satisfied. General Theory of Rate Processes The theory of rate processes5 developed by Eyring and others has been applied to chemical reactions as well as to other processes such as viscosity of liquids and diffusion. In every case in which rate-process theory can be applied, there is a small subdivision, so that the macroscopic process is the net effect of all the small processes. Increasing emphasis is being placed on the necessity for obtaining reasonably accurate estimates of the physical properties of reservoir fluids well in advance of more accurate laboratory data. One such factor is the isothermal coefficient of expansion of an undersaturated hydrocarbon liquid which may be contained in a particular reservoir. This coefficient, or liquid "compressibility", has often been assumed to be relatively insensitive and nearly constant. Although this assumption may be nearly correct in the case of high specific gravity liquids, it cannot apply in the case of medium to low specific gravity liquids. Any treatment of the nature of liquid compressibilities must give consideration to the variable nature of the isothermal expansion coefficient and the fact that it can be both pressure sensitive and temperature sensitive. The isothermal coefficient of expansion, or compressibility, of a substance is defined as -c = 1/V (?V/?p)T......(1) The value of Eq. 1 may be approximated for a finite pressure change by using the well-known relation, c = V1 - V1/Ve (p2-p1), ........(2) in which p1 > p1 and V2 > V2 and V1 + V2/2. The instantaneous compressibility may also be estimated from the slope of a curve on which log V is plotted vs pa. In this instance, it has been shown that c = In V1/V2/p2-p1 ...........(3) Eq. 3 may be used for variable compressibilities by plot-ting V vs p on semi-log paper. In this case, the instan-taneous or point compressibility is c = 2.303 m.......... . (4) in which m is the slope of the curve at a point in log cycles per psi. ISOTHERMAL COMPRESSIBILITY OF UNDERSATURATED LIQUID In the case of gases, the compressibility has been defined by Muskat' and others as Co = 1/p - ?z/z?p ..........(5) This was later generalized through application of the theorem of corresponding states' to co = 1/pr - (?z/z?pr) T8 ........(6) in which c, is defined as the pseudo-reduced compres-sibility and is numerically equal to (c.p,) and the sign is arbitrarily changed for mathematical convenience. Eq. 6 is general and applies to gases and liquids. In the case of liquids, c. = c1,pe, but if Eq. 6 is used, values of z and ?z/?p, must be determined for the liquid in question. The difficulty of obtaining accurate values of ?z/?p,, particularly in the region where T, is approaching 1.00, was pointed out in the previous paper'. This method of approach is unreliable for extension into computations of liquid compressibilities. On the other hand, c, can also be defined as follows: - Cr = 1/Vr (?Vr/?pr) Tr ......(7) and from which, Cr = 1/pr (?pr/?pr) Tr .....(8) In accordance with the theorem of corresponding states, Vr = V/Vr, p, = p/pr and pr = p/pr. Ref. 2 pro-vides an excellent source of reduced density, reduced pressure and reduced temperature data for a wide variety of fluids. For the purpose of this investigation, the set of fluids2 having ze = 0.27 was chosen because it in-cludes most of the heavier hydrocarbons usually found in those complex mixtures loosely defined as "reservoir oils". Data on undersaturated liquids in Ref. 2 were rearranged to conform with Eq. 8. To simplify the computation of cr, the isothermal p, data were plotted vs the log of pr, in which case for any straight line or tangent cr = 1/M pr pr .....(9)

The methyl stretching vibrations for a series of normal xanthates, isoxanthates and normal amines were determined with the aid of an infrared spectro-photometer, and the results were compared with published information on the corresponding alcohols. The frequency shifts of methyl stretching vibrations may be attributed to the inductive effect of polar groups. The hydrogens in the shorter chain alkyl groups are somewhat polar and can be expected to interact with water molecules by hydrogen bonding. Contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration appear to be related to the induced polarity of the alkyl groups. Traube's rule states that in homologous series of compounds solubility decreases and surface activity increases regularly with the size of the hydrocarbon group. Analyzing the work of transfer of a solute from solution to surface, Langmuir' interpreted this rule to mean that each CH2 group added to a molecule produced its effect independently of the others. It is also well known2 that the maximum equilibrium contact angle with sulfhydryl collectors is independent of the polar groups and of the sulfide minerals, and that it increases to a certain limit with the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group. This observation is thought to demonstrate the orientation of the collector molecules at the sulfide surfaces. The dependence on the hydrocarbon chain length is usually explained as due to the screening of the force field of polar mineral surfaces.3-5 Here again, Langmuir's principle of independent surface action appears to be implied. Heteropolar compounds consist of nonpolar and polar groups, the former being the hydrocarbon group and the latter containing such electronegative atoms as O, N, S, P, or halogens. According to Palit6 the hydrogens in the alkyl groups are more electroposi- tive than in the paraffins owing to the negative inductive effect of the polar groups and a possibility that a hydrogen bond with water molecules ensues. Goto and Takenaka7 provided direct evidence of the inductive effect by measuring the shift of the C-H stretching vibrations of alcohols, acids, and alkyl bromides with an infrared spectrophotometer. Their approach appeared to be directly applicable to the studies of surface activity both at air-water and water-mineral interfaces encountered in flotation systems. The present article attempts to relate the C-H stretching vibrations of alkyl xanthates, alcohols, and amines with such flotation chemistry parameters as contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Normal xanthates from methyl to octyl inclusive and the isopropyl, isobutyl, and isoamyl xanthates used in this investigation were prepared in the usual manner.8 Normal amine hydrochlorides with carbon chain lengths of 1, 2, 4, and 6 were from Distillation Products Industries, of 8 from Archer-Daniels-Midland Co., and of 10, 12, 14 and 16 from Armour and Co. Normal propylamines, pentylamines and heptylamines from Distillation Products Industries were used both as received and as hydrochloride formed by converting the amines according to the procedure described by Li9 Perkin-Elmer Model 521 and 621 infrared spectro-photometers were used to investigate the spectra in the frequency region of 3050 to 2800 cm-' with frequency scale expansion. The accuracy of the frequency readings was within + 1 cm-1. The KBr micropellet technique was used to prepare the xan-thate samples for measurements, and the halocarbon mull technique was used for amines and amine hydrochlorides. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the CH3 asymmetric stretching vibrations as a function of the number of carbons in the alkyl group for normal xanthates, isoxanthates and amines. In these days of intense competition for the domestic fuel market much is heard of the low efficiencies with which solid fuels, and most particularly bituminous coal, are burned in domestic heating equipment. In contrast to the every-day operating efficiencies of 85 and 90 per cent in large, central, electric-generating stations, efficiencies of 50 per cent and lower are cited for the hand-fired home furnace. Just as the miles per gallon of gasoline is only one of the factors that determine the cost of operation of an automobile, so the thermal efficiency is only one factor in the cost of domestic or other heating. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the total costs of domestic heating by various fuels and types of equipment, to determine the relative importance of efficiency and other factors, and to discuss what this signifies relative to the future of the use of fuels in the home. Factors That Govern the Choice of Fuel and Burning Equipment A rational, intelligent selection of fuel and equipment for heating the home would consider two groups of factors: Cost Factors Convenience Factors 1. Cost of potential heat in fuel 1. Attention 2. Efficiency of combustion and heat transfer 2. Dirt 3. Fixed charges 3. Noise a. Interest b. Depreciation c. Repairs 4. Power costs 5. Cost of handling ash and refuse. As just stated, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the relative importance of the five cost factors and not to discuss particularly the relative total costs of different methods of heating. Like every present-day manufacturer, the brass foundryman is faced with the necessity of reducing the cost of his finished product without impairing its appearance or quality. He must use every economy that the progress of art and science puts at his disposal and should also be alert to profit by any peculiarity in his own situation or the nature of his product that may give him an exceptional advantage. Much can be accomplished by the adoption of labor-saving equipment and improved methods of melting, molding and handling. Control of pouring temperature, study of defective castings and their causes, laboratory control of molding sand and core mixtures, the use of less expensive alloys, all contribute to the desired end. Assuming that the composition of the alloy is already as inexpensive as the character of the casting will permit, still further savings can be made by the intelligent purchase and utilization of the metals needed to produce the desired analysis. Functions of Secondary and Virgin Metals in Casting Brass It is no longer a general assumption among foundrymen that quality castings must be made from an "all virgin" mix. If suitable secondary metals can be obtained more cheaply it is wasteful to use any larger proportion of virgin metal than is required to produce castings of the desired properties. To follow such a course, however, imposes upon the foundryman a heavier obligation than was formerly the case, to make sure by test and inspection that his castings really are of the desired quality. So long as he used the most expensive grades of metal and his melting practice was reasonably correct he was not obliged to give much thought to the quality of the metal in the castings. If he is to use secondary metals he must, in order to retain the confidence of his customer, examine these metals very carefully before use, exercise scrupulous control over his melting and pouring conditions and examine his castings closely. Two new metastable phases have been obtained in Au-Ge alloys by rapid cooling from the melt. One is of the hep structure with near-ideal axial ratio and may be considered a Hume-Rothery phase. The other has a complex tetragonal structure (a = 11.627Å and c = 22.191Å for the Au60Ge40 alloy) and may be looked upon as a superlattice made up of forty-four fee unit cells. Alloys with the tetragonal phase are charactevized by marked preferred orientation. The metastable constitution of the Au-Ge alloys is discussed with reference to the rate of cooling from the melt. THE Au-Ge equilibrium diagram features a rather deep eutectic near 27 at. pet Ge with a maximum solid solubility of 3.2 at. pet Ge in gold and is similar to the Ag-Ge, Ag-Si, and Au-Si diagrams.' The present study of the effects of rapid cooling from the melt on the structure of Au-Ge alloys constitutes an extension of similar investigations2-8 in this laboratory on alloys of noble metals with germanium and silicon. Nonequilibrium hep structures have so far been obtained by quenching Ag-Ge2, 3 and Ag-Si4, 5 alloys from the melt; an Au-Si alloy of approximately eutectic composition has been found6 to solidify in a noncrystalline state. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Twenty-nine alloys prepared from gold of 99.9+ pet and germaium of 99.999 + pet purity were investigated. The method of alloy preparation, the technique of rapid quenching from the melt, and the X-ray diffraction procedures were similar to those described previously.3, 4 Essentially, small sections (-20 mg) of thin alloy rods (-1 mm diam) were rapidly heated up to 1200°C in a graphite crucible under argon and the liquid alloy ejected by a helium blast onto a polished copper strip held on the inner periphery of a rotating wheel. The resulting thin foils were examined with or without the copper substrate in a G.E. X-ray Diffractometer or in a 114.6-cm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. RESULTS Table I gives the constitution of liquid-quenched Au-Ge alloys, as estimated from intensities of X-ray reflections from the corresponding phases, viz., a (fee solid solution), ß (hep phase), ? (tetragonal phase), and diamond-cubic (dc) germanium. Despite unavoidable variations in the quenching rates, the proportions of the phases in different alloys were generally reproducible and stable at room temperature. There was no evidence of quenching strain, since the a doublets were well-resolved in high-angle Debye-Scherrer reflections in all cases except where stacking faults in the a fee and ß hep structures contributed to X-ray line broadening. The ß and ? metastable phases showed signs of decomposition to the equilibrium a phase and germanium only after a few hours annealing above 100°C. A few alloys around the eutectic composi-

The regions to which this paper refers include the whole of the Dominion of Canada east of the 130 Rocky Mountains and north of the water-shed of the St. Lawrence. Very little exploration for economic minerals has yet been done in this immense country; but that little has already served to indicate great wealth in some localities. Having been engaged for a number of years in conducting government geological explorations in these vast territories, I shall endeavor to give the members of the Institute an idea of the prospective mineral resources of almost half a continent, as far as they are yet discernible. I purpose confining my observations to the economic minerals, and will not attempt a description of the geology of these territories; hut it will be necessary to say a few words about the rocks in order the better to explain the distribution of such minerals. The Laurentian nucleus of the continent is the principal feature of the geological map of the Dominion. It stretches from Lake Superior to Baffin's Bay, and from Great Bear Lake to the Straits of Belle Isle. Hudson's Bay itself, which is half the size of the Mediterranean Sea of the old world, lies in the center of this area. Its shores are bordered in places with newer rocks. On the west side of James' Bay (its southern prololigation) these extend inland over 200 miles, and consist of fossiliferous Devonian and Silurian strata. On the western and northwestern side of Hudson's Bay proper, altered rocks are met with, some of which resemble the gold-bearing strata of Nora Scotia, some the Huronian of Lake Huron, some the older Huronian, and others the crystalline series of the neighborhood of Sherbrooke in the Province of Quebec. Along the east coast (called the Eastmain)and among the islands lying off it, there is an interesting set of volcanic and sedimentary rocks which appears to be identical with the Animikie and the Nipigon series of Lake Superior. The area which I have characterized in a general way as Laurentian, includes tracts and belts, more or less extensive, of the Huronian series. Such areas appear to be most common, and have been best explored, in the country between the Great Lakes and Hudson's Bay.

SOME of the most important hydrometallurgical developments in recent years relate to processes involving the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aque- ous suspension at elevated temperatures by air or oxygen under pressure. Among these is the acid pressure-leach process which has been developed, particularly for the treatment of pyritic uranium ores.1-5 In this process, an aqueous suspension of the ore is digested in an autoclave, in which an overpressure of air or oxygen is maintained, at temperatures above 100°C. THE Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. It has been known for many years that when a wire is moved in a magnetic field, an electromotive force is developed which is proportional to the rate at which the wire is moved in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic intensity and to the magnetic intensity itself. If the ends of the wire are connected to a current indicator, the current behaves exactly as though the source of electromotive force were a galvanic cell. If a wire is wound circularly and rotated uniformly around a diameter not parallel to the intensity, the current flowing through the wire will be alternating of sinusoidal shape. If, instead of a single loop, there are several turns wound in a short helix, the electromotive force developed will be approximately proportional to the number of turns, the area of the helix and to the speed of rotation. The maximum electromotive force will be developed when the axis of rotation is perpendicular to the field; if this is not so, only the component of the intensity that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation is effective. This is the principle of the usual earth inductor. With a few turns of wire and comparatively slow rotation, it is possible to produce a considerable deflection of a galvanometer. If two similar coils are rotated together at two different points for which the magnetic field intensities perpendicular to the axes of rotation are different, the electromotive forces developed will each depend on its corresponding intensity and be a measure of that intensity. Many different shapes of drill bits are in use with hammer drills, but little definite information is available whereby to judge which one of these shapes is the best. The following investigation was undertaken in order to determine what effect, if any, the shape of the cutting edge has on the cutting speed and wearing qualities of drill bits. The bits tested were those in common use, namely, the 4-point or cross bit, the 6-point bit, the Z bit and the "Carr" bit. The rock in which the tests were made was the red granite from southeast Missouri. It is a coarse crystalline granite containing an unusually large amount of quartz and is extremely hard, and on account of its uniform texture is admirably adapted to this work. While tests in other rocks might show somewhat different results, nevertheless it is the opinion of the authors that the relative cutting quality inherent in the shape of the bits would be the same in all rocks. Other qualities, such as mudding freely, freedom from fitchering, etc., might make one bit more desirable than another in softer rocks. Description" of Bits Tested 'I'he 4-point bits were the usual shaped bits commonly made on the Leyner sharpener, with 14' taper on the wings and a 90" angle between cutting edges. Some tests were run at 85 Ib. pressure with a 4-point bit made with a 50 taper on the wings; this bit was formed with the Carr bit dies. The 6-point bits were the usual shaped bits made on the Leyner sharpener. The Carr bits were made with a 5º taper and an angle of 100" between cutting edges.

IN the most general sense, solidification refers to the formation of crystalline material from either a gas or a liquid. However, in this symposium, only the formation of crystals from liquids will be considered. Thus, in our present study the problem of solidification becomes that of determining the mechanism of the transition from a liquid to a crystalline solid, and our particular interest is in the transformation of metals from the liquid to the crystalline state. Metal liquids are seldom composed of only one kind of atom. Often solute atoms are added intentionally to make an alloy, or they may be present accidently because of incomplete purification. Furthermore, there may be small solid particles of various other crystals present in the liquid. Such small crystals may persist if their melting points are higher than any temperature to which the liquid is heated. Prior to solidification, the liquid metal usually is poured from one container to another. The second container, called the mold, usually is at a lower temperature than the container, or the crucible, in which the metal is liquified. The first solid that forms upon contact with the mold generally is of a different composition than the liquid, usually containing fewer foreign atoms or dissolved impurities. Heat is evolved upon solidification and is dissipated through the surroundings. Tree-like crystals, or dendrites, grow from the container walls and branch into the melt, enriching the remaining liquid in impurity atoms. In some alloys the remaining, relatively impure liquid continues to solidify until no liquid remains and the branches of the original crystal are cemented together. In other alloys, particles with a second type of crystal structure appear before solidification is complete. First the nature of the liquid and the solid states will be considered and then the mechanism of the initial formation of crystals from pure and alloy liquids. Later the problem of the growth of these crystals and the complexities of solidification in a mold, where the temperatures are not uniform and the composition of the melt changes continuously, will be discussed. LIQUID AND CRYSTALLINE STATES A liquid is an aggregate of atoms arranged with no apparent regularity (over distances of more than a few atom diameters). Nevertheless, any given atom generally has a definite number of nearest neighbors at definite distances, and thus order may be said to exist over a short range. In a crystal, on the other hand, a regular array of atoms continues for many hundreds or thousands of atom diameters, and a long-range order is apparent. Thus, a crystal having long-range order can be reproduced by linear translations for 10-5 cm or more of some fundamental unit possessing short-range order. A crude illustration of the difference between liquid and crystalline structures can be obtained by comparing the possible arrangements of oranges in a crate. If the oranges are simply dumped into the crate haphazardly until it is filled, the oranges will represent a static model of a liquid.

THERE is probably no phase of basic open-hearth steelmaking that is more of an art and less of a science than mold and pouring practice. It varies widely from plant to plant; consequently it is obviously impossible to set down in detail in this chapter the many ramifications of practice that are now used. The discussion that follows therefore attempts only to give an outline of the more common methods, with examples sufficient to indicate some of the variations in procedure, and to emphasize a few of the many underlying problems that face the open-hearth operator at the pouring platform. MOLD DESIGN Ingot molds are hollow castings of considerable wall thickness. Despite this, non-uniformity in wall thickness should be strictly avoided to prevent the setting up of unnecessary stresses. Molds are cast in various forms, sizes, and shapes depending on the type of steel, and on whether the ingot is to be withdrawn from the mold or the mold from the ingot. The selection of ingot-mold material, which is usually cupola or blast-furnace iron containing approximately 3.5 per cent carbon, 1 per cent silicon, 0.9 per cent manganese, 0.2 per cent phosphorus, and 0.07 per cent sulphur, is governed by numerous considerations that affect mold life. (1) Factors in addition to wall thickness that should be given primary consideration at the foundry are casting skin, shrinkage stresses, and casting temperature. Factors in Mold Design. In use, mold thickness is of greatest importance, for it must be heavy enough to freeze the molten metal rising in the mold and to reduce the temperature of the steel below that of the melting point of cast iron to prevent the inner surface of the mold from melting, which would result in the welding of the ingot to the mold. The skin of an ingot, which solidities immediately upon contact with the relatively cold walls of the mold, must soon become thick enough to contract on the fluid mass and pull away slightly from the sides of the mold. The separation of the ingot from the mold depends entirely on the heat taken up by the mold from the steel.

Being on a visit to your great and prosperous country, and having been favored with an invitation to attend this meeting of your Institute, the author has been requested by your Secretary to give a short account of his invention of the " soaking-pit," which he has great pleasure in doing. The object of the soaking-pit is the rolling of steel ingots with their own initial heat, that is, to supply the missing link in that chain of metallurgical operations which Sir Henry Bessemer began in 1857, when he proved how it was possible to produce malleable iron or steel direct from the fluid cast-iron out of the blast-furnace, without any further direct use of fuel. The great Bessemer invention has revolutionized iron and steelmaking throughout the world; but it stopped short at producing the ingot, which, it was found, had afterwards to be heated in a furnace to enable it to be rolled or hammered; and it is only lately, twenty-five years after Mr. Bessemer's announcement, that the author of this paper has been able to show that furnacing can be dispensed with, and that it is practicable to roll a steel ingot into say a bloom, a rail, or a billet, with its own initial heat. It has no doubt suggested itself to many that there ought to be heat enough in the ingot just cast, for the purpose of rolling; and from time to time attempts have been made to utilize this heat; but such attempts always ending in failure, it became a settled opinion in the trade that it could not be done—an opinion which the author is aware that your late lamented countryman, Mr. Holley, than whom there was none more conversant with Bessemer steel-making, also entertained. But settled opinions sometimes prove to be great fallacies. So far as the quality of the product is concerned, the history of the production of pig iron for foundry purposes is one of constant retrogression. The steps in this deterioration began with cold-blast charcoal pig iron, then anthracite iron, coke iron; then gradually warm to hot-blast coke iron, with the charcoal furnaces also heating their blast to get greater tonnages, and finally the present-day hot-blast coke irons with scrap additions to the ordinary burden that, according to one European report, have gone as high as 65 per cent. Parallel with this quality retrogression is the enormous increase in furnace tonnages from about 15 to over 1000 tons per day in excep tional instances of modern practice. The key to this situation is economic pressure. The effect is a growing differentiation between furnace production for gray iron and malleable foundries and for the production of commercial steel. As the foundry is often compelled to draw upon the pig irons made for steel purposes, for economic reasons, whereas the steel industry does not draw upon foundry pig irons proper, the situation is resolving itself into one of grave consequence for the life of the gray-iron castings industry, and hence the intensive present-day feeling in foundry circles for rigid specifications to govern the quality of pig irons sold for foundry use. In the discussion of a paper on the use of scrap in the blast furnace held recently in the Institute, a very pertinent remark was made by one of the participating furnacemen, who confessed that "the things found wrong by the foundryman with his iron were beyond his depth." It may be added that those things are also beyond the depth of most foundrymen who, however, know from their results that they are getting poorer castings today with many pig irons than they did with those same brands in former years. A knowledge of the fundamental principles of locating, sampling, testing and evaluating materials is essential in prospecting for mineral aggregates. In this discussion, mineral aggregates will be considered sand, gravel, crushed stone and slag that are used as materials of construction. The quantity of mineral aggregates produced in the United States during the year 1935 for such purposes was roughly 165,000,000 tons, about 60 per cent of which was sand and gravel, 37 per cent crushed stone and 3 per cent crushed slag. The total value of this material was approximately $100,000,000. It is apparent therefore that the prospecting for suitable mineral aggregates is of considerable economic importance. In prospecting for mineral aggregates, the methods employed are the same whether the organization is large or small. In the large organization there may be available geologists for locating sources of supply, a land acquisition department to arrange for the necessary options or permits, engineers to do the sampling, a laboratory for testing, and a board of consulting materials engineers to make the final selection. Even small organizations must follow the same general procedure, though the responsibility for the selection of aggregates may rest with one man, who may or may not be an engineer, but who must depend entirely upon his own judgment. Locating the Supply The initial step in prospecting for mineral aggregates is the locating of suitable, adequate and economic sources of supply for the project in mind. Commercial plants in the vicinity should be investigated and a survey made of the existing structures that have been built of aggregates from these sources. If the structures are rather old and show no signs of deterioration, it is fairly good evidence that the aggregate is satisfactory. If materials of the proper quality can be obtained from commercial sources in sufficient quantity, and delivered to the job economically, it

I. Situation and Surroundings, The Promontorio mine is situated at the northern end of the Sierra San Francisco de Coneto, in the town of Promontorio, Partido of El Oro, State of Durango, Mexico. As shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, the nearest railroad station is Chin-acates on the Mexican International Railroad, 82 miles north of the city of Durango. The mine is 16 miles north of the sta-tion by air-line. It is reached by means of a good wagon-road which first crosses the Guatimapé Plain, passing the ranches of San Antonio and San Julian, to Estacion—a distance of about 15.5 miles—and then entering the mountains crosses the Sierra to Promontorio—a further distance of 11.5 miles— making in all a distance of 27 miles by road from railroad to mine. Promontorio is just beyond the summit of the range, at an elevation of about 8,000 ft. above sea-level, or 1,350 ft. above the Chinacates station. The Castillo de San Francisco, the highest peak in the Sierra, has an altitude of 10,000 ft., and the Promontorio road crosses the summit of the ridge at an elevation of 9,000 ft. by a pass just below this peak known as the Puerto del Almagre. The Promontorio mill is situated at Santa Inés, 2 miles by tram or 3 miles by wagon-road to the north of Promontorio and about 600 ft. lower. The Sierra San Francisco de Coneto decreases in height towards the north and west till it comes to an end at the Mel-chor Arroyo on the ranches of Melchor and Ramos. Beyond this arroyo another range, the Sierra de la Candela, begins. THE pottery of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) is equipped to make three classes of refractories; namely, spelter vessels, spelter condensers; and high-grade fire-brick. The most important of these are the spelter vessels, on account of the extreme severity of the service which they must perform, necessitating great care in the selection of materials and in the whole process of manufacture. Next to the spelter vessels in importance? come the condensers, as large numbers are used in the manufacture of spelter, and improvements m quality result in material decreases in working cost. , While the fire-brick which form the laboratory, or high-temperature portion of the spelter furnaces, are placed at the foot of the list, they-are nevertheless of much importance, since high quality will decrease the frequency of the always expensive shutdowns for repairs. To promote simplicity, the manufacture of these three products will be described separately in this paper, except in so far as materials and the crushing and handling system common to all are concerned. Materials Bond Clay.-The bond clay used entirely at the Palmerton pottery is a St. Louis clay furnished by the Grand View Fire Clay Co. It is stored in a system of covered bins, and no attempt is made to weather -it in the, accepted sense of the term " weathering." Some years ago our clay was weathered before pugging, but we did not find the benefit sufficient to offset the additional handling and the loss. of clay incurred. Furthermore, we believe that the rotting of the pugged mix (described later), accomplishes the same results to better advantage. That there is some action taking place in the clay while stored in the covered bins, however, is, evidenced by an increase in volume which at times has caused damage to the retaining walls of the bins. We have at present a stock of bond clay weathering in the open, and when this is put into service an opportunity will be afforded for making comparisons-with the clay as usually handled.

The prime objective of geophysical exploration is to promote the economical and rapid dis-covery of mineral or oil deposits of commercial value. To a few this concept as applied in min-ing may signify the direct discovery of ore-bodies, but to the geophysical engineer this latter Idea is one of the most insidious and detrimental misapprehensions which he has to combat. The destruction of this annoying obstacle to the progress of geophysical exploration reveals the kernel of truth behind it, that the exploration geophysicist has for the better part of two decades been concerned primarily with the discovery of mineral formations favorable to the occur-rence of commercial ore. There is a very real distinction here, since geophysical methods are capable of discovering certain mineral formations such as sulphide bodies or quartz veins, but are totally incompetent to predict whether or not they constitute ore; that is. whether or not they contain minerals of economic value in the amounts requisite to repay extraction. The art of geophysical exploration is now, however, rapidly outgrowing these early limita-tions. The rate of this growth will in large measure depend on the recognition by the mining industry of the fact that geophysics can play a role far wider and more important than it usual-ly does now, in guiding the future exploration and development of mineral deposits. It is my own firm conviction that as time marches on we will see the methods of applied geophysics turned more and more to the delineation of both minor and major structural features. The outlining of such features having a bearing on the probable loci of mineral deposition will be of inestimable value in guiding the development of a mining district.
