THE carbon-oxygen reaction without doubt is the basic reaction in steelmaking. It is important on several counts: In the first place, carbon is the element that distinguishes steel from iron. It is the principal element controlling properties, and its control is of prime concern. Although the principal objective of the carbon-oxygen reaction is to oxidize excess carbon, the accompanying boil should not be underrated. The mechanical agitation, stirring, and mixing resulting from the boil are so useful in the distribution of heat and in promoting uniformity of composition in the bath that, were it not a natural accompaniment of the carbon-oxygen reaction, it is probable that something would have to be invented to replace it. The open-hearth operation, for example,, with the bath heated from above by radiation, would be impracticable without the carbon boil. The electric-arc furnace is somewhat less dependent on it, but every melter knows how much easier it is to gain temperature with minimum damage to refractories during the boil than with a dead bath. The motor action of the induced current of the induction furnace makes the carbon boil unnecessary but even there a severe oxidation has been found useful in giving greater freedom from porosity in certain steels. The quantitative aspects of the carbon-oxygen reaction have been given considerable attention by a large number of investigators, and the principles of physical chemistry have played an important part in these studies. Physical chemistry is the science of the mechanics and mathematics of chemical reactions. It is possible to study the mechanisms of reactions in a qualitative manner without reference to mathematics and thus obtain valuable concepts as to the manner in which the wheels go around. When it is desired to express quantitative relations in these reactions, however, resort to mathematics is not only convenient but necessary. Mathematics may also be regarded as the shorthand language of physical chemistry. A basic relation whose description requires numerous words may be expressed very simply by a mathematical formula or equation. A good example of this is the equilibrium constant for a chemical reaction. Expressed verbally, it is: When a chemical reaction has reached a condition of equilibrium, the product of the concentration of the reacting substances on one side of the equation, divided by the product of the concentration of the reacting substances on the other side, gives a quotient that is a constant at constant temperature. For the carbon-oxygen reaction C + 0 [=] CO this is expressed simply as [ ] where K (from the German Konstant) is the equilibrium constant for the reaction. Although mathematics is such a necessary and useful tool, it is also a potential pitfall. Mathematics in itself is an abstract science, which is not inhibited by consideration of mechanisms or materials.

A PART of the material incorporated in this paper was derived from the studies of ancient metal objects examined by the authors from time to time for museums and art collectors, in order to verify the age of the metal. The data thus accumulated during several years were systematically surveyed and supplemented by new material obtained in examination of a set of specimens that had been generously donated by museums for this study. Altogether over 50 pieces were investigated, of which 39 are described in this paper. Every specimen is at least 1500 years old; the majority are considerably older. Exact conditions to which these bronze and copper objects were exposed in the ground are unknown, unfortunately. It is safe to say that exposure conditions did not remain constant during the long period of burial. Although the collection of specimens studied represents a wide variation in location and age of the objects, as well as in the nature and composition of the metals, it was found that fundamental changes in the metal structure were limited to a few typical cases which, therefore, may be considered as more or less general. The authors' chief aim was to study the effect of extremely long periods of corrosion on the structure of bronze and copper. Specimens Studied As the majority of specimens were very small and sometimes had a heavy coat of patina, or crust, which further reduced the amount of metal available for analysis, quantitative chemical analyses were not made. Small detached specimens were not always obtainable and studies had to be made on the statue, or other object, itself. In the description of specimens (Table I), their approximate compositions determined under the microscopc are given. The proportion of tin in bronze containing eutectoid was found by visual estimation of the area occupied by the eutectoid. It was based on the assumption that maximum solubility of tin in copper on moderately slow cooling is 7 to 8 per cent in thin castings and 9 to 10 per cent in heavy castings. When the metal was all

AT elevated temperatures the oxide of silver is unstable in the air at atmospheric pressure, consequently no external oxide scale forms upon pure silver under conditions of high-temperature annealing. When small quantities of certain alloying elements are present in the silver, the formation of a thin external scale is possible' and in addition there may form a subscale composed of the oxide of the solute element precipitated within the body of the silver. Norbury2 and Leroux and Raub3 have reported internal oxidation (subscale forma¬tion) in alloys of silver with 2, 7.5, and 30 per cent of copper. The presence of the subscale is believed to be responsible, at least in part, for the objectionable "fire mark" in Sterling silver.4 Several other alloys of silver, after oxidizing heat-treatments, are known to exhibit undesirable polishing characteristics that may be the result of internal oxidation. Except for the absence of an external scale of silver oxide, it is to be anticipated that silver alloys will prove to be very similar in their oxidation behavior to the alloys of copper, the oxidation characteristics of which have been studied in some detail5,6 The present research confirms this anticipation. The oxidation of a series of 20 dilute alloys of silver has been studied metallographically; some types of subscale not encountered among the copper alloys have been found. Instances of internal oxidation in alloys of most of the metals of the I-b and VIII groups of the periodic system are on record, but evidence of this type of oxidation in alloys of the metals of the intermediate groups is lacking. A number of the metals of the intermediate group, among them cadmium, lead, tin, and zinc, appear to provide the conditions essential to subscale formation; i.e., they form oxides with a relatively low negative free energy of formation, they dissolve other metals that form more stable oxides, and, presumably, oxygen will diffuse through them. In a study of 4o alloys of these white metals only a few cases of internal oxidation have been found. The probable reasons for this difference in behavior will be discussed presently. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silver.-The silver alloys employed in the oxidation studies were prepared in heats of 30 grams each from high-purity silver (99.993 per cent Ag)* and the purest avail-

Use of the discretized batch-grinding model for the simulation of locked-cycle grinding tests from batch-grinding data is illustrated. The simulated results were compared with actual locked-cycle experimental data for the dry grinding of dolomite. To illustrate the utility of this simulation method, a number of relationships between operating and performance parameters were generated, including relations between batch grinding and the Bond test, the production rate and the circulating load, and the production rate and the product size. A large amount of testing is done each year in the mineral industry for use with grinding unit cperations, and much of the experimental test data is obtained by the tedious locked-cycle testing procedure. In addition to being experimentally complex and requiring large amounts of sample, the very nature of the locked-cycle experiment yields results that cannot readily be interpreted. The attempts that have been made to model comminution systems during the last few years may provide a better and simpler way to obtain and analyze grinding test data; these models involve elements of both fitting to "model equations" and deterministic representations.1-1 The traditional engineering design techniques for comminution systems have relied mainly upon large amounts of industrial operating data that have been correlated with locked-cycle grinding data.',' Bond's empirical mill-design procedure involving locked cycle testing remains the most generally available method to this day. The purpose of the present paper is to show how much more useful data can be obtained from a simple batch-grinding experiment that provides information which subsequently can be utilized with population balance models of the grinding process to simulate locked-cycle behavior. These simulation results can, of course, be used in Bond's general design scheme. However, the combination of batch-grinding tests and the population balance model allows many more conditions to be considered than do single laboratory tests under specific locked-cycle conditions. The use of these simulation techniques for prediction of locked-cycle behavior represents one of the first practical applications for the simulation method in comminution.

INRODUCTION Roan Consolidated Mines Limited (RCM) operates five underground mines - Mufulira, Luanshya, Baluba, Chambeshi and Chibuluma (figure 1) . Associated metallurgical plants provide for the operations of milling, smelting two refineries for copper and a cobalt plant. Primarily a producer of high quality copper (242,000 tonnes during 1980) the Company is also the world's second largest producer of cobalt metal. RCM's remaining ore reserves at 31st March 1980 were 275 million tonnes at 2.84% copper. Monthly ore production is in excess of 1.2 million tonnes. Sublevel open stoping was the choice of mining method for the first underground operations on the Copperbelt for ore with dips steeper than 30 degrees. This was for use at the Roan Antelope mine, subsequently to be called Luanshya mine. The sublevel open stoping system was planned based on the methods used in many of the iron mines of Michigan and New York and in the copper mines of Tennessee. Peterson (Ref. 1) gave the following reasons for employing sublevel stoping, reasons which are still valid today: (1) the working place could always be barred and made safe, and the sublevel exit was always at hand; (2) the working conditions were similar day by day and drilling operations were repetitive; (3) pillar spacing can be varied as conditions demand; and (4) stoping operations could be shut down completely or opened up to full capacity at short notice, without affecting grade or causing wastage of reserves. Such was the success of the method that it was adopted as the basic mining method at all the RCM mines in their initial stages. Although cut and fill, block caving, and sub- level caving methods have been used, sublevel open stoping in its many variants still accounts for nearly 90% of total ore production in the Company. The following descriptions outline some of the applications of sublevel open stoping within RCM. LUANSHYA Geology There are two main ore deposits at Luanshya: the Roan (Luanshya Mining Area), in which mining began in 1930, and Baluba, in which mining production started in 1973 (figure 2). Both orebodies occur in synclinal and variably folded basins. These basins are underlain and completely surrounded by much older schists and granites. The ore formation, an argillite, lies near the base of the sediments and is underlain by conglomerates, quartzites and arkoses. Copper mineralisation is mainly found in two well defined zones, separated by a varying thickness of pyrite mineralisation. In the eastern part of the Roan deposit only the upper orebody is present, but west of 18 shaft and at Baluba the lower orebody predominates. Locally the subjacent quartzites of the footwall formation are also mineralised with copper. The copper mineralisation is found princi- pally as disseminated sulphides, mainly chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Near the surface the sulphides have been changed to oxides. At Baluba the cobalt mineral carrollite is found with the sulphides. Mining methods Sublevel open stoping is the basic mining method. In its standard form this method is best suited to steeply inclined orebodies, with simple structures and with a strong foot- wall and hangingwall. In recent years, as more complex folding and flatter dipping orebodies have been encountered, considerable variations have been introduced. Stope drilling is effected with drifters and extension steel.

IN the United States, fully 98 per cent. of the anthracite and bituminous coal tonnage obtained from underground operations is mined by the room-and-pillar system. Under this system, the total cost of the coal f. o. b. railroad cars contains as its greatest single item the money paid for "labor." Each labor dollar in an. average bituminous mine may be subdivided into 85 c. paid for work done inbye the gathering turnouts (including all work at the face), and 15 c. outbye that point (including all work in and under the tipple). In an average anthracite mine, the corresponding figures are 70 c. and 30 c., the larger breaker force accounting mainly for the difference between these and the bituminous figures. The next largest single item after "labor" is usually "supplies and power;" and a division of this item inbye and outbye the gathering turnouts shows somewhat the same relative proportions as has been noted under the case of "labor". During the past 10 years, the chief advances made in the coal industry have been to obtain economies through complete mechanization covering that portion of the work which lies outbye the gathering turnouts. These results have been accomplished by applying scientific principles to railroad yard layout, to cleaning and sizing machinery, to dumping facilities, to roller-bearing haulage equipment, and to heavy-rail, well-ballasted trackage. But these improvements, while gratifying in their resulting economies, apply only to 15 to 30 per cent. of the important cost items. Obviously, then, the big problem before the engineers of the coal industry today has to do with the methods of mining and the layout inbye the gathering turnouts. Four years ago, Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., determined to have an exhaustive study made of the conditions which must be met in order to gain complete face mechanization, and in order that such a mining layout would be based on, correct underlying principles. The result of that study, which was made by the writer, led to the adoption of a method of longwall mining wherein the. roof is worked on the caving system and is supported as an overhang along the face by steel jacks.

CERTAIN typical characteristics of bauxites, ores of aluminum permit their classification into a number of categories, each of which has special features that enable grouping within it deposits from widely scattered bauxite fields. There may be local variations in conditions that have introduced differences of lesser importance between similar deposits in different fields, resulting perhaps from the influence of factors other than those that have produced the distinguishing features of each of the different groups, but in general the similarity between the deposits in each group is sufficiently striking to make the grouping indicated of interest. Several factors and conditions enter into the decomposition process that results in the development of bauxites and laterites and affects their character. The principal conditions favoring optimum bauxitization are: (1) pres- ence of rocks with easily soluble minerals yielding residues rich in alumina; (2) effective rock porosity, enabling easy access and free circulation of water; (3) normal to abundant rainfall alternating with dry periods; (4) vegetation, including bacteria, advantageously distributed; (5) available sources of appropriate solution and precipitation agencies; (6) a tropical or at least a warm climate; (7) low to moderate topographic relief, allowing free movement of the water table but a minimum of erosion; and (8) long quiet periods in earth history. Assuming that all of these factors are operating to a greater or less degree, it seems that the one that affects most the physical character of the resulting bauxite or laterite deposits is the chemical and mineralogical composition of the rocks that by their decay yield the bauxite deposits. This factor is used in the classification followed in this paper. In the process of weathering of ordinary silicate and carbonate rocks of the earth's crust, whether of igneous or sedimentary origin, it is the minerals of the alkalies that yield most readily to attack. The alkaline earth compounds also offer no great resistance, particularly the carbonates. Thus, among the rock-forming elements, those producing the most insoluble compounds are aluminum, iron, and silicon, together with certain ones of less importance, such as titanium, manganese, and phosphorus. Wollastonite in Essex County, New York, occurs as a typical contact mineral in a series of rocks metamorphosed by anorthosite. Sole current use is in various types of electric welding fluxes. Its uniform lathlike shape suggests its use as a specialized filler. Introduction Wollastonite (CaSiO3) was first noted in the vicinity of Willsboro, Essex County, New York, about 1810 by Dr. William Meade, and described from the same locality in 1821 by Lardner Vanuxem.' Recent exploration and development indicate that the deposit is of adequate size for continued exploitation on a larger scale than the present operations. The only other known occurrence of like magnitude in this country is in Kern County, California.* Wollastonite has been reported from Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Lewis County, New York, but these are little more than mineral localities. Geology The Essex County wollastonite has been found outcropping at numerous separate localities in a belt of contact metamorphosed sediments, 1/4 mile wide, which begins 2 miles southwest of the village of Willsboro and trends N. 70" W. for approximately 6 miles (Fig. I). In this belt, the pre-Cambrian Grenville has been injected and partially replaced by the more liquid portions of an anorthositic magma. Bud-dington and Whitcomb3 have described the rock in this contact metamorphosed belt as "Mixed gneisses: Grenville mafic, pyroxenic and garnetiferous gneisses and skarns* with local nearly uniform garnet or pyroxene layers and with gabbroic anorthosite sheets. A few limestone layers." These rocks are underlain, presumably at no great depth, by gabbroic anorthosite gneiss, the typical Whiteface border facies of the Adirondack anorthosite massif. The occurrence of wollastonite in large quantities was discovered during the quarrying of the garnet-rich layer that overlies the wollastonite at one opening. Further prospecting revealed its presence elsewhere in the belt, overlain in most places by the garnet. Accurate tracing of the wollastonite is difficult, owing to the glacial cover and to the fact that the weathered surface of the mineral has a dark, dirty brown color, and that the wollastonite itself has been dissolved more or less completely along the outcrops. It has, however, been noted at 10 localities within the skarn belt in the first 2 1/2 miles from its southeastern end. It has not been found in the northern half of the belt and therefore may be limited to the southern half. At the Fox Hill quarry, which is the main opening, 150 ft. have been exposed, showing an aggregate thickness of 30 to 35 it. Of

In order to find an empirical relation between a quantity F and (m) independent variables or factors, each of which take (n) different values or levels, it is necessary to conduct nm different experiments (all possible combinations of the factors), each of which has to be repeated a few times (usually five) due to the scattering of the data. The total number of such experiments is very large, thus for example, when m = 4 and n = 5, it is equal to 5.54 = 3125; and very rarely is it possible to conduct such a number of experiments. Various possible methods of planning partial experiments are illustrated in Fig. 1. Each method shows a large combinative square consisting of five columns and five rows of middle squares, each of which, in turn, is further divided into five columns and five rows of cells. Such a partition corresponds to a plan of an experiment with four factors, each of which takes five different levels. The blackened cells indicate the combination of factors in a partial experiment. The total number of experiments is reduced on the basis of the following considerations: a) The effect of only a few levels of some factors is studied (Fig. la). Such an investigation gives no information on the effect of some factors, therefore it cannot be accepted as satisfactory; b) By reducing the number of levels of each factor; in such a case it is not possible to obtain an empirical relationship, but only whether some factors have an effect. This is evidently inadequate;

In engineering analyses, rock is frequently treated as a homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic medium. However, rock material exhibits, in most cases, physical nonlinearity, time-dependency, and anisotropy. In some instances, anelasticity due to nonmechanical effects, such as density and temperature changes, must also be taken into account. The influence of these different anomalies in the physical behavior of a rock material is often neglected. An estimate of the discrepancies which are introduced when classical theory of elasticity is used is consequently required. The easiest theoretical path by which these discrepancies can be analyzed is to vary the constitutive equations of the rock material. The constitutive equations, representing various physical experiences with different types of media, define a class of ideal substances. Assuming different constitutive equations for the description of the rock physical behavior, one can establish a sensitivity analysis to determine how much information is contained in elastic theory for reliable design purposes. The method may be applied also using numerical techniques (e.g., finite element or finite differences) which, because of the nature of the formulation, require one to assume in each case the rock constitutive equations. Theoretical and experimental work is needed to be able to perform such analyses with confidence. Adequate and practical procedures for the determination of the material functions which enter the various constitutive equations must be established. This paper presents such an attempt with respect to the simulation of some behavior patterns of rock material. It is felt worthwhile to stimulate activity in this field and it is hoped to contribute to this objective.

IN the broad survey of the nonferrous' metallic elements contained in this book, the reader may well be impressed by the wide range of property combinations offered by the many metals and alloys the metallurgist has prepared since before Kubla Khan. The diversity is great and the overlap is considerable. It is particularly surprising, then, to find the latest structural metal new- comer designated by such extravagant terms as "Cinderella Metal," "Wonder Metal," "Miracle Metal," "The Metal of Tomorrow," "Dream Metal or Nightmare?" and "The Middleweight Champion of the Structural Metals." Of these and others, the most appropriate designation for the metal involved, titanium, appears to be that of The Middleweight Champion. Its intermediate density of 4.5 and elastic modulus of 16 million is a unique combination between the lower density and modulus of magnesium and aluminum and the higher density and modulus of copper, nickel, and iron. It is light, strong, ductile, and corrosion resistant. A chemical neighbor in group IV of the Periodic Table, zirconium, is similar to titanium in many respects but is appreciably denser, 6.5 instead of 4.5, less stiff and relatively much less abundant. On the other hand, the resistance of zirconium to acids and alkalies is better than that of titanium. Also, compensating for its higher density, lower stiffness, and somewhat lower strength level compared with titanium, zirconium has much better permeability to slow neutrons and is much more suitable as a material of construction for nuclear reactors.

Discovery of scandium in the Vitro solvent extraction plant for uranium led to commercial recovery of the byproduct. Micro amounts of scandium were extracted with uranium by dodecyl phosphoric acid, but failed to follow ura-niuminto the hydrochloric acid strip solution and were eventually concentrated in the organic extractant. A fluoride strip system was developed to recover scandium from the solvent in concentrated form. High purity scandium oxide was then prepared in multi-pound lots by chemical separation techniques. The plant recovery operation, final product purification, and analytical procedures are described. Scandium is a pseudo-rare earth which is truly rare and expensive. It has special properties which may make it desirable even at the present price of $2750 per lb. Recently the price was lowered from $5000 per Ib which had prevailed since 1952, and it is anticipated that usage will be stimulated because of the lowered price. This metallic element is distributed widely in trace amounts in the rocks of the earth's crust. In addition to micro-amounts found in most uranium ores, concentrations of 50 to 100 ppm have been found in Colorado ferberite ore, lateritic nickel ore, heavy sandstone from Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico, and various zircon sands and monazites from the western part of the U. S. Scandium has been found as an essential constituent of very few minerals, the most important being thortveitite, a scandium silicate. At the present time, this mineral commands a price more than twice that of gold. Chemically, scandium is in group 3A of the periodic table. It is closely associated with yttrium and the rare earths which it strongly resembles in its reactions. It has a valence of three and will form an insoluble hydroxide, fluoride, or oxalate under proper conditions, similar to the rare earths. Eight years before its discovery, scandium was predicted by Mendeleef who ascribed his eka-boron with properties nearly identical to the actual properties of scandium. Its position as the element with Atomic No. 21 and Atomic Weight 44.96 places it between calcium and titanium in Period 4 of the chart. The successful commercial application of scandium must depend on unique properties to justify use of this high cost substance. Greater consumption would allow additional price reductions, but scan- dium will remain a relatively high-priced commodity because of its inherent scarcity. Research reportedly has been oriented toward use of scandium as an agent to achieve high-temperature, low-density alloys with magnesium and tantalum.' Also, the U.S. Air Force sponsored a project for production of research amounts of pure scandium metal.' The oxide has been used experimentally in electronics, ceramics, and metallurgy. The various aspects of scandium are well covered in recent publications.s-5 CONCENTRATE RECOVERY Small amounts of scandium exist in uranium ores and are dissolved during an acid leach yielding up to 0.001 gpl Sc2O9. When Vitro converted their uranium plant from phosphate precipitation to solvent extraction: scandium was found to follow the uranium into the dodecyl phosphoric acid solvent (DDPA). However, scandium did not strip with uranium from the DDPA in hydrochloric acid, but remained in the solvent. Therefore, a concentration of scandium built up in the organic phase. Residues from the solvent were spectrographed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and found to contain scandium. As a result of this discovery, provisions were made in the plant for recovery of scandium-bearing concentrates. Solvent extraction of uranium was added to a conventional acid leach process in a typical installation? The ore was crushed and ground, and then leached with dilute sulfuric acid. The production of oil by water flooding can be substantially increased by the maintenance of free gas saturation in the reservoir during the flooding operation. This effect is accomplished by the alteration of oil relative permeability characteristics and the occupation by gas of pore space that would otherwise be filled with residual oil. The amount of reduction In residual oil can be calculated from appropriate water-oil relative permeability characteristics. This paper presents experimental data in support of the foregoing conclusions and an example of the calculations. The microscopic pore saturation concepts of the mechanism are discussed. A method of practical application to field floods is presented together with discussion of certain limitations. INTRODUCTION The presence of free gas has been reported by a number of investigators to significantly affect the oil recovery which can be obtained from sandstone flow systems by water flooding.1,2,3,4,5 The effect of gas, noted in every instance, has been to cause lower residual oil saturations than could be obtained by water flooding the same systems in the absence of free gas. The degree of improvement in recovery has been observed to vary widely, depending on the systems used and the conditions of the tests. The increased oil recovery obtained because of the presence of gas during a water flood has been variously attributed to changes in physical characteristics of the oil, selective plugging action of the gas, inclusion of oil mist in the free gas phase, and the additional sweeping or driving action of the free gas. All but the first of these suggestions imply changes in the displacement mechanism. The change in viscosity and inter-facial tension of the oil phase, within the pressure range used for all the experimental work, is certainly not sufficient to account for the differences in residual oil saturation noted dess there is a drastic change in the displacement process. One other effect which logically seems capable of causing differences in residual oil saturation of the magnitude noted in the experimental work is that of simple replacement. In a water-wet system containing oil, water, and gas, it is to be expected that the gas will exist inside the oil. This is the position of minimum free surface energy, since the gas-oil interfacial tension will be less than the gas-water interfacial tension. There is no apparent reason to expect that the existence of free gas within the oil phase should alter the saturation at which the non-wetting phase (now oil and gas) should become discontinuous and hence trapped so as to be unrecoverable by direct displacement by water. If this is the situation, then trapping of a certain percentage of gas saturation during water flood should result, at infinite water-oil ratio, in a like reduction of oil saturation below that attainable by flooding in the absence of free gas. It is visualized that the gas will exist as bubbles inside the discontinuous residual oil as illustrated in Fig. 1, with the size of the oil bubbles being substantially unchanged due to the presence of the gas. As a practical matter, it can be anticipated that the presence of a free gas saturation inside the oil phase will reduce the relative permeability to oil which will exist at any particular water saturation. The most commonly used material for terminals in spark plugs is commercial nickel wire, because of its relatively high temperature of melting, excellent heat conductivity, and slow rate at which the metal is oxidized, even upon continued heating at high temperatures. The grade commonly used for this purpose averages 97 per cent. nickel, the remainder being manganese, cobalt, iron, copper, with traces of other impurities always found in commercial nickel. A peculiar and interesting type of deterioration that occurs in these nickel terminals during the service life of the spark plug was recently brought to the attention of the Bureau of Standards. Commercial spark plugs vary greatly in their size and shape and the terminals differ considerably as to their relative size, shape, number, and arrangement with respect to one another. Although this defect was studied in detail in only one form of spark plug, the deterioration is a characteristic of the material, i.e., of nickel wire, rather than of the particular type of spark plug in which it was noted and studied. The mechanical features of the plugs, however, have a considerable bearing on the time required for the deterioration to become serious. The results of this study of the deterioration of nickel terminals in service should be of value to the makers of all types of spark plugs in which the terminals are made of this metal. CharacteR of Deterioration of WIres During Service Macroscopic Appearance and Properties of Changed Wire.—The nickel terminals in which the deterioration was studied were taken from spark plugs having a central terminal with the ground or side terminals attached firmly at both ends to the shell of the plug. In some of the plugs, two side terminals were used, one on each side of the central one. Although both terminals were found to have deteriorated to some extent, the attack of the central one was quite negligible compared to that of the side ones. These latter wires had developed, in service, transverse cracks that, in many cases, were as sharp and definite as a knife-cut. Among the names which won a world-wide fame during the golden age of the early fifties, Bendigo and Ballarat were to Australia, what the Yuba and Grass Valley were to California. The map of Victoria did not for a long time show the name of old Bendigo;* for this first and more distinctive name was replaced with the more English Sandhurst, just as the alluvial diggings gave place to quartz mining. Towards the close of last pear, steps were taken to give back the old name, as associated with the early days of rich alluvium, and more suggestive than the application taken secondhand from an English military academy. History. The first discovery of gold? in this district, was made in the autumn of 1851 ; but there has never been any certainty as to the day or the man. At that time the country around Bendigo Creek was a part of the Ravenswootl sheep-run, and its resemblance to the Forest Creek district (now Castlemaine), induced the first prospecting. It was late in November when the "rush" broke out; the shepherds left their flocks; the sylvan solitudes were disturbed by * The name of Bendigo is said to have been derived from a hut-keeper on the Ravenswood sheep-run, who on account of his fondness for " fisticuffs " was nicknamed Bendigo, after the prize-fighter of that name. It is not aboriginal, as is often supposed, but Spanish ; and equivalent to our Benedict. There must always be some confusion between the two names of Sandhurst and Bendigo; the town, and with it the gold-field, having been three tinies named. Several other old familiar names have been likewise unfortunately replaced by second-hand English ones; so that an old digger talks of Forest Creek when he means the modern Castlemaine, Mt. Ida for Heathcote, Growler's Creek for Bright, etc. I shall use the names Sandhurst and Bendigo interchangeably. The first discovery of gold in Australia, was made by E. H.Hargraves, February 12, 1851, near Bathurst in New South Wales. In August of the same year the discovery at Buninyong, near Ballarat, inaugurated the first of a series of rushes to the Victoria gold-fields.

The subject " Safe Timbering of Working Places in Mobile Loading" is one that requires an analytical study of the strata both above and below the coal seam as well as the characteristics of the coal seam itself. The projection or mining plan must be based on economic roof control in which the application of timber can be minimized without incurring cost increases in other phases of production. The several types of loading machines in common use today are not adaptable to the same projections or timbering systems. Consequently the type of equipment to be used must also be considered. For these reasons the writer does not believe that the problems of timbering in working places can be discussed without simultaneously considering economic production as well as the safety of men and the conservation of equipment. Prior to the introduction of loading machines as a substitute for the pick and shovel system of loading coal, the care and maintenance of the individual working places were generally the responsibility of the coal loaders who worked in them. Up to that time very few coal companies had developed and applied fixed and definite standards for timbering the working places in the mines they operated. It is common knowledge that mechanical loading of coal has had several false starts in the last twenty-five years and it is only in the last decade that it has developed to the stage at which we now find it. During this twenty-five year period the management of the more responsible companies have come to realize the tremendous importance of roof control in coal mining. From a safety viewpoint, the lack of roof control has been and still is responsible for more than a third of the industry's annual fatality experience. In recent years workmen's compensation and insurance rates have steadily increased while the profit margin has decreased almost to the point of elimination. From an economic operating viewpoint, the failure to properly control roof is quite often the most costly single phase of coal mining. Since the manufacturers of loading machine equipment have so improved their machines that normal care and maintenance can reduce to a minimum the time lost because of mechanical failure the production delays from other causes have assumed a far greater importance. Roof control in the broad sense and in the light of concentrated mining plans or projections that are adapted to mobile loading should be regarded as one of the major problems in the inseparable phases of production and safety of the workman and equipment at the working face. The subject of this paper cannot be treated properly unless what is said here is based upon the broad and fundamental problem of genera' roof control. The suc-cessful solution of a problem arising in any industry must have its origin in a complete analysis of the known facts or factors that pertain to it. The several illustrations

THE object of this investigation was to ascertain the effect of varying percentages of beryllium upon pure copper and the properties of the resultant alloys in their softest condition, the effect of heat hardening on them, and the extents to which these properties could be augmented by different combinations of heat hardening and cold rolling. The data compiled in this paper represent partial results of continuing work done by the writer during the years 1930 and 1931, which was a continuation of the unpublished ground work incepted in the laboratory of the Beryllium Corporation of America by H. B. Pulsifer in the year 1926. A short bibliography on beryllium alloys is appended to this paper. It has, of course, long been known that copper subjected to cold work is hardened and strengthened to a considerable extent, furthermore it had been qualitatively noted in previous experiments that copper-beryllium alloys seemed to take on hardness and strength as the result of cold work at a greater rate even than does plain copper. It was decided therefore to endeavor quantitatively to determine such rate of increase, as also the relative increases by combinations of cold working and heat hardening. The results are summarized in Tables 3, 4 and 5. A preliminary series of experiments had indicated that by an exposure to the heat of 575° F. for 2 1/2 hr. age-hardening of a 2.50 per cent beryllium-copper alloy took place. Slab ingots of nine different beryllium-copper alloys were prepared under identical conditions by means of the addition of a previously prepared 12.5 per cent beryllium-copper alloy to well melted and deoxidized pure copper. The ingots were then reduced by hot rolling to 12 gage (about 0.080 in.). These strips were heated to 1450° F. and quenched in cold water, and thus brought to their softest condition. (See Table 1.) Strips were next "precipitation-hardened" by reheating to a definite temperature. Similar strips to those itemized in Table 1 (which had been quenched from 1450° F.) were reheated for varying periods of time at 575° F. The hardness figures show that a metastable condition, of which the range of stability is dependent entirely upon time at the given temperature, begins to be noted in copper samples containing as little as 0.85 per cent beryllium.
