The history of the several petroleum deposits of Texas and Mexico, or of the sediments in which they now occur, if the deposits are not indigenous to such sediments, is known in a general way only, but it nevertheless casts strong light on the conditions surrounding them and is of great importance in the search for and exploitation of them. The petroleum deposits of Texas are separable into two main divisions: 1. The deposits of northwestern Texas, which are directly connected with the Oklahoma fields to the north, and have no representatives at all in the Mexican area. 2. The deposits of the coastal area, which extend into Louisiana on the east and connect with those of the Mexican coast to the south. Early in the Pennsylvanian period a series of bituminous shales and limestones were laid down over a broad area in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. These are known as the Bend series in Texas, the Caney shales in Oklahoma, and the Fayetteville beds in Arltansas. Following their deposition an uplift occurred, forming the Lampasas geanticlinal, which runs northeastward from the old Paleozoic land area of the Llano region toward Red River. The Bend series is petroliferous in places and has furnished a few producing wells on each side of the Lampasas uplift. This uplift forms the barrier and dividing line between the two divisions of the Texas petroleum deposits. To the west of it, in waters which were the southcrn extension of the interior continental seas, in connection with the sedimcnts and coal beds of the Pennsylvanian and Permian, great quantities of petroleum were deposited either as oil or as "potential petroleum." These sediments have been subject to very slight disturbance, and only very gentle folds are found, with no signs of volcanic action in any part of the area. The conditions, therefore, indicate that the greater part, if not all, of the oil in this area is indigenous to the beds in which it is found. East of the anticlinal the oldest beds which appear in contact with the Bend are the Trinity Sands of the Lower Cretaceous. No evidence has

During the past few years there has been considerable interest in the sizing and the preparation of the iron ore fed into blast furnaces. Furnacemen know that proper sizing of ore tends to increase the efficiency of the furnace. It has been shown by Joseph1 and his associates that there is a direct relationship between the porosity of an ore particle and the time required for its reduction in the blast furnace. This relationship may be stated as follows: All other factors remainig constant, the time for reduction of a given sample of ore is inversely propor-tiofid to its porosity. As a consequence, large pieces of very porous ore, say 3 or 4 in. in cross section, will be completely reduced by the time they reach the hot zone just above the tuyeres, while large pieces of dense, nonporous ore may reach the hot zone with their centers unreduced. This means that for the latter complete reduction will be accomplished by the so-called "direct method;" i,e., where carbon reacts directly with the ore. Some recent work by philbrook2 seems to contradict this rule. He found that of two unlike ores he studied, the one with the lower porosity reduced more readily. He explained his results as "possibly due to an apparently greater tendency of the rA, ore (lower porosity) to crack during preliminary dehydration and during reduction." This brings his results in line with the rule stated above. It is not the author's intention to enter into a discussion of the merits of "direct" versus "indirect" reduction. It is enough to Say that, in general, indirect reduction is desirable. For the greatest efficiency, Gruner's theorem3 requires that all reduction in the blast furnace be indirect. Joseph seems to believe this also, because in his recent article on Some Comparisons between Iron Ore, Sinter and Nodules as Blast Furnace Feed4 he concludes that: "In genera', the carbon in blastfurnace coke is used most efficiently when the largest amount of the carbon charged reaches the tuyeres." However, P. V. hlartin,3 in an excellent paper, has shown that some direct reduction may actually increase the efficiency of the furnace; that is, increase its rate of production while maintaining maximum fuel economy. For nonporous ores there is more opportunity to have an excess of direct reduction unless the factors that make for indirect reduction are favored; for instance; the Proper sizing of the Ore particles' Another factor that has an important bearing on the reduction rate, as it is affected by particle size, is the flow of heat into the particle. The phase eqrtilibria of the binavy system, Nb-Al, weye established by metallographic, X-ray diffraction, hardness, and thermal-analysis techniques. Three intermediate phases were identijied, Nb3.41, Nb2Al, and NbAl,. The N6,Al and NbAl phases have extensiue ranges of solubility. The aluminum-rich region of the system has a peritectic reaction where liquid reacts with NbAL, to form aluminum solid solution. The transfornzed product on rapid quenchirzg is an acicular NhAl. temperature resistance to oxidation. As a prerequisite, the phase equilibria of the system, Nb-A1, were necessary. A literature survey revealed that the phase-equilibria data reported by various investigators were rather incomplete and conflicting. Ever since the introduction of the Siemens regenerative furnace, it has been recognized that a certain amount of gas is lost each time the furnace-action is reversed. This loss comes, first, from the gas which passes through the free connection between the stack and the gas-main, which exists during the time the reversing-valve is turning over; and, secondly, from the gas which is in the chamber and flues, from the hearth to the reversing-valve, and which flows back into the stack when the valve is reversed. The amount lost each time is, of course, small; but, since a furnace is reversed from four to six times every hour for, say, 300 days in the year, the aggregate is large enough to be well worth attention. The estimate has been published1 that, in Germany aloue, the loss from the first of the above causes amounts to 500,000 barks per year. The loss from the second cause is, of course, much greater.

THE challenge of unprecedented need for more metals to meet present-day re-armament and domestic requirements is being met with minerals beneficiation projects of great number and variety, and with new and improved methods, techniques, and. equipment. Iron Range Developments Much attention has been given during the year to the tremendous program for beneficiation of taconites and intermediate iron ores which is progressing through large pilot-plant tests preparatory to full-scale production operations. The greatest activity has been directed toward concentration of magnetic taconites on the Mesabi Range. The Reserve Mining Co. has let $75 million in construction contracts for the 2 ½ million-ton-per-yr project (concentrates) at Beaver Bay, Minn., and is building a 300,000-ton-per-yr pilot plant to prove up the magnetic separation and pelletizing operations. Oliver Iron Mining Co. has a pilot plant under construction near Mountain Iron for concentrating magnetic taconites, and is operating experimentally a sintering and nodulizing plant on fine ore screenings and concentrates at Virginia to fully develop agglomeration technique. The Erie Mining Co. plant at Aurora continues its production of concentrates from magnetic taconites which was begun three years ago. No plans have been announced to treat the Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconites, but F. D. Devaney, Pickands Mather and Co., is studying a new process for magnetically roasting lean ores to make them amenable to low-intensity magnetic concentration. W. R. Van Slyke, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., calls attention to several noteworthy developments in the field of intermediate ores, perhaps the most significant of which has been the first commercial operation of a Dutch State Mines (DSM) cyclone plant at the Buckeye mine of the M. A. Hanna Co. The plant concentrates the +1/4 in. fraction by means of conventional heavy-media treatment after suitable crushing, screening, and washing. The -1/4 in. +65 mesh material is treated in two 12-in. cyclones, the -65 mesh fraction being sent to tailing storage. The plant is operating successfully on feed rates up to 120 tons per hr, and indicates that successful treatment of the fine fractions of Mesabi intermediate ores is imminent. Another commercial-size DSM plant was placed in operation late in the year by Cleveland-Cliffs at the Holman mine, and two additional ones are expected to be in operation next year. Various other methods are also in use at different plants for treatment of the fine fractions, including classification, abrasion milling followed by classification, jigging, and Humphrey spirals. Where it can be economically justified, it seems at present that heavy-media treatment of the -1/4 in. fine fraction will also come into increasing use on the intermediate ores. During 1951 a one-unit, heavy-media plant to treat hematitic crude ore was erected at the Ohio mine on the Marquette Range by Cleveland-Cliffs and plans for another plant at Humboldt to produce 2000 tons of concentrates annually is contemplated, as is also the construction of a plant for agglomera-

IN some districts of the bituminous coal field the problem of constructing bulkheads to seal off water under pressure is becoming increasingly important. Recently this matter has been brought very much to the front by the loss of a large Illinois mine due to failure of a bulkhead that separated it from several old, flooded mines. As this great misfortune has provoked much inquiry about proper bulkhead design, it is felt that a description of the successful and extensive water-sealing practice at three mines that have different natural conditions will be of considerable interest to those connected with properties having a present or future water problem and to engineers that may have to design safe bulkheads of economical construction. These three mines are the Saxton and Dresser, near Terre Haute, Ind., and the Hegeler, near Danville, Ill. All three have water conditions that make it necessary to regularly seal off all worked-out sections of the mine, and there are considerably over a hundred bulkheads in each. As far as the writers know, these three mines are the only ones in the bituminous coal fields of the United States with anything like so large a number of water seals and experience, although a number of other mines are known to have a few bulkheads. More detail will be included herein on the Saxton mine than on the others, as the writers are more familiar with it. General Mining System All three of the mines use the same general panel room-and-pillar system, which consists of rooms turned both ways off room entries and a solid block of coal left on all sides of the completed panel except on the cross-entry side, where a heavier pillar is pierced by two entries for haul- age and air. On completion of the panel the two entries are sealed and the panel is then isolated from the rest of the mine. Owing to water conditions, no pillars are pulled; recovery inside the panel barrier pillars is approximately 65 per cent.

IN a previous paper, "Electric Shovel Operation at Utah Copper Mine," which was read before the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, the problem of electrifying a fleet of steam shovels was described. This paper deals with the electrification of the haulage system which, when completed, will make the mining operation completely electric, with the exception of drilling operations which will continue to be performed by air. The general layout of the haulage system involves the use of heavy curves in addition to heavy grades of between 4 and 5 per cent. In a mining operation of this kind no trackage can be called permanent; this complicates the overhead construction somewhat and makes it necessary to design special forms of trolley construction, some of which will be described in detail below.

Several methods are available for calculating the performance of solution-gas-drive reservoirs from the PVT properties of the oil and from the relative permeability and other properties of the formation. These methods require a number of simplifying assumptions. The present method of computation has made use of a high-speed computer to solve simultaneously the nonlinear partial differential equations that describe two-phase flow by solution-gas drive in order to calculate the performance of a reservoir. Some of the results obtained by the nonlinear partial differential equation solution are compared with those obtained with an approximate method, which has been called the semisteady-state solution. The pressure and saturation profiles from the wellbore to outer boundary calculated by the two methods are compared for one constant-terminal-rate case and two constant-teminal-pressure cases. The agreement in these profiles, as well as in the values of average reservoir pressure and cumulative recovery, leads to the conclusion that, for most engineering calculations, the semisteady-state method will give a reasonable approximation to the numerical solution of the differential equations describing solution-gas drive. An unfavorable (as regards ultimate oil production) set of relative permeability curves was used in the calculations in the belief that the effect of the parameters which were studied would be emphasized to a greater degree. Furthermore, the reservoir was assumed to be completely homogeneous, and these results should not be considered applicable to any other type of reservoir. Gravity effects are not considered. The absolute permeability was varied from 25 to 0.5 md. At an economic limit of 2 B/D, the recovery for a 25-md reservoir is about 1.8 times as great as that for a 0.5-md reservoir. The effect of permeability on the producing gas-oil ratio is minor. Once PVT properties of the oil and the relative penneability properties of the reservoir are fixed, the pro- during gas-oil ratio is found to be a function of the fraction of oil recovered. Well spacings of 10, 40 and 80 acres were considered. For the assumed homogeneous-reservoir properties, the effect of spacing on recovery at an economic limit of 2 B/D was very slight. Certain dimensionless groups can be used to extend the results to other fields having different penneabilities, spacings, reservoir thicknesses, well radii and porosities, so long as the PVT and relative permeability properties are similar to those used in this paper. INTRODUCTION An important aspect of reservoir engineering is the prediction of the performance of the reservoir based on the limited information normally available early in the life of a field. Usually, soon after a field has been discovered, it is necessary to decide upon the spacing to be employed and the production program to be used for most efficient utilization of reservoir energy. Where these decisions have not been dictated by legal or political considerations, they have frequently been based on experience factors which indicate that two fields with similar characteristics will probably have similar performances. To the extent that the industry has been successful in economically exploiting oil reservoirs, this rule-of-thumb method has been found to have merit. A large amount of theory has been developed with which it is possible to predict the performance of a reservoir by using certain known properties of the oil and the formation. Because of the difficulties of the mathematics involved for a drainage area having square or rectangular boundaries, the problem usually has been simplified and idealized by assuming each drainage area to have radial symmetry and the field to be represented by a number of these drainage areas. Muskatl was one of the first to formulate the theory for two-phase flow and to solve the equations for a few cases by numerical integration, using the relatively slow means of computing available at that time. RECRYSTALLIZATION of cold-worked metals has long been known to proceed by a process of nucleation and growth.1 When a cold-worked metal is heated to a temperature at which recrystallization will ensue, nuclei of new grains, essentially strain-free, appear and grow. As the process proceeds, nuclei continue to appear and to grow, until the cold-worked matrix has been entirely consumed and recrystallization has been completed (Fig. I). Conducted isothermally, a measurement of the fraction of the matrix recrystallized plotted against time, yields an isothermal recrystallization curve, showing the time course of the recrystallization process (Fig. 2).2 Evidently, then, the rate of recrystallization is determined by the rate at which nuclei form and the rate at which they grow. The rate of nucleation N is the number of nuclei that form in unit time in unit volume of the unrecrystallized matrix, and the rate of growth G is the increase in radius of the recrystallized grain per unit time. In recent years attempts have been made to determine N and G as these vary with the well-recognized variables affecting recrystallization: time, temperature, degree of deformation, etc.' Such studies yield information that is more fundamental than that conveyed by the conventional recrystallization diagram,' since the rate of recrystallization is thus analyzed into its two component rates.2 Methods are now available by which N and G can be measured, and analytical expressions have been developed for the interrelationships among N, G, the isothermal recrystallization curve, and the final grain size, which greatly facilitate analysis.2-4 The application of these methods has been demonstrated recently for the recrystallization of silicon ferrite.2 Data on N and G in dependence upon the recognized recrystallization variables are, however, very fragmentary;* values of N and G have been determined for some metals, but the effect of temperature, which would yield the fundamentally important activation energies, has been too little studied. Thus far there has been no detailed study of the recrystallization of any one metal in terms of N and G over appreciable ranges of the variables time, temperature, degree of deformation, and original grain size. It is the purpose of the present paper to provide such a study, employing aluminum.

Automatic recording of the radioactivity of the earth's formations provides a log of relative intensities that, if properly interpreted, can be applied to oil-field engineering. Production, engineering, and geological departments regard the radioactivity log as a forward step in the securing of more conclusive information for successful well completions. Explanations of the technique, together with some of the problems to which radioactivity logging have been applied, are presented in this paper. Introduction Those responsible for the completion of new oil and gas wells, or with planning workover operations on old wells, have followed closely the development of radioactivity well logging because they are interested in reducing the number of unknowns that usually are present in such work. Many operators have made use of the log, or are acquainted with at least one of the applications, but it is unlikely that any one operator is familiar with all of the many applications that are possible. The purpose of this paper is to present a representative example of each of the many applications, wherever the information has been released by an operator, and to illustrate by hypothetical examples other applications, releases for which have not been given. In this way, it is hoped that a better understanding of the scope of this new engineering tool may be obtained. Athough the literature contains many references that describe in detail the theory, development, and application of radioactivity well logging, a brief discussion of the technique may be helpful to those who are investigating the subject for the first time, All rocks contain radioactive material in varying concentrations. In general, shales contain relatively more radioactive material than sandstones or limestones. These radioactive materials disintegrate with time into other materials of lower atomic weight, and in that process of disintegration the rocks are emitting many rays, the most penetrating of which is the gamma ray. The intensity of emission of the gamma ray is proportional to the quantities of radioactive materials present. A higher rate of emission would be observed, therefore, opposite a shale than opposite a sandstone or limestone. Since measurable intensities of gamma rays are capable of penetrating as many as five concentric strings of casing, and as the gamma-ray intensity is relative to the formations, the measurements of variations in gamma-ray intensities offer a means of identifying cased-off formations in their proper stratigraphic sequence. TEe Gamma-ray Curve The measurement of gamma-ray intensi ties is accomplished by means of an ioniza-tion chamber that consists of a heavy cylinder, about 3 ft. long, that contains two insulated electrodes and is Med with an inert gas under high pressure. In choosing the unusual title given to this paper, in which the term "cyclic " might be substituted for "intermittent," my idea has been simply in respect of precision. We might say old method vs. new method, but that antithesis implies something of substitution that has not occurred and perhaps is not in sight. We may say horizontal retorts vs. vertical, but none of the older retorts are truly horizontal, and there are three different types of vertical retorts. Other complexities might be suggested. There is, however, a broad distinction between distilling that is accomplished in a periodic cycle, generally daily; and distilling that is accomplished continuously, irrespective of whether it be done in the vertical retorts of the New Jersey process or in the retorts of the Trollhät-tan process. In offering a summary of the present state of the art with the intermittent process, I shall not have any idea of exemplifying it through descriptions of any single plants, but shall rather divide among the main steps of the process and outline what is best developed among them. In pursuing this thought, it will manifestly be impossible to make a composition that will exemplify the acme of good practice, for the latter will always be a function of the cost of labor, fuel, etc., which are widely variable. As of 1929, in respect of labor we might generalize the average plant wage in the Pittsburgh-Wheeling district of the United States at $5 per day; in Oklahoma at $3; in Great Britain at $3; in Germany at $1.75-$2; in Belgium and France at $1. With high labor costs the metallurgist will naturally use means of the nature of mechanization that with low labor would be uneconomical when capital charges are taken into account. Nor may we from records of performance safely make positive deductions in respect of the efficiency of different types of furnaces unless they have been tested comparatively under identical conditions in the same works. We shall find gas-fired regenerative furnaces showing coal consumption from 1.2 tons down to 0.7 per ton of roasted ore, which may be ascribable to difference in the thermal value of the coal that is used or to differences in proportions of the parts of the furnace, which is something quite distinct from the principle of the furnace. LEONARD Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is process design, operation and maintenance to produce an acceptable product which can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of these interests, attention to the unrealized potential value of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of both the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modem coal preparation plant. Thus, coal types having similar physical and chemical properties tend to become increasingly concentrated according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches which are sandwiched together in layers and which visually differ from each other by physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, six percentage points of dry volatile matter and 10 percentage points of total sulfur.1 Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content and undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter which might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long established fact that coal is not homogeneous as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance. Since both coal and associated minerals entering a preparation plant are highly heterogeneous, a multi-product potential beginning with certain flotation cell concentrates and ending with plant refuse may exist. Such a potential can and to a limited extent is achieved at some operations by drawing off coal according to size, specific gravity and/or surface chemistry differences from individual coal cleaning processes. Such a sequenced draw-off of coal of increasing ash increments could yield, among other products, chemical coals, coking coals, coals for pulverized fuel boilers, cyclone boiler coals, coals for cement plants, limestone, shale and clay. Using the same experimental method previously described, the activity of sulfur in a number of quaternary and more complex liquid iron alloys at 1550oC is determined. OUR recent papers 1,2 have described new determinations of the activity of sulfur in Fe-S binary and Fe-S-j ternary solutions, but the practical applications of these data require the estimation of activity of sulfur in more complex systems. Previously, Sherman and chipman3 devised an approximate method for calculating the activity of sulfur in complex systems by summing the contributions to the logarithm of the activity coefficient of each element in the alloy. This procedure is more successful, as one of us has pointed out,4 when the concentration variable is taken as zs = ns/(nFe — nS t CLJ~ nj) rather than the conventional atom fraction x~ = nS/(nF, + nS + Enj). In the former definition, which is based on analogy to interstitial solutions, the value assigned to uj is normally +1 for metallic and -1 for nonmetallic elements." In addition, however, the effects of mutual interaction between alloying elements must be considered for the accurate estimation of the activity of sulfur in more complex systems. The purpose of this investigation has been to devise a more reliable method for estimating the activity coefficient of sulfur in nmIticomponent iron alloys. The measurements were carried out on some quaternary systems Fe-S-j-k for combinations of silicon, chromium, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten. Manganese was not included since the experimental method has been found unsatisfactory for volatile, sulfide-forming elements. The experimental method was the same in every detail as described previously. 1,2 The concentrations of sulfur, silicon, chromium, and copper in the quenched metals were determined by chemical analysis but those of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten were calculated from charged amounts. Iron sulfide was included in the charges in amounts estimated to furnish approximately the final sulfur content. CALCULATION W2 have shown2 that when zs and zj are the concentration variables in a ternary Fe-S-j solution the logarithm of the activity coefficient S = a~/zg is a linear function of the variables as and aj defined as follows:

HYDROGEN effects in titanium alloys have been the subject of extensive research in recent years. Lenning, Craighead, and Jaffee1 showed that hydrogen embrittles a titanium and, at the same time, elevates the temperature at which the transition from brittle to ductile failure occurs during impact testing. In later work: the same investigators concluded that several all-ß alloys tolerate large amounts of hydrogen without serious damage to mechanical properties, but two-phase alloys suffer varying degrees of embrittlement, depending upon the specific ß-stabilizing addition used and whether or not an a stabilizer is also present. The mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement has not been clearly established. Strain rate has been shown to be an important factor and, therefore, a strain-aging phenomenon is suspected to cause the effects that hydrogen has produced on mechanical properties.3-5 Ripling6 has pointed out that ductility damage varies inversely with strain rate in a-ß alloys and directly in a alloys. This effect in a alloys can be associated with transition-temperature behavior, but the embrittlemeat mechanism in two-phase alloys remains in question. During the course of research conducted for the U. S. Air Force, a dark-etching phase has been observed at the grain boundaries of certain two-phase titanium alloys after duplex (solution plus aging) heat treatments.5-7 An example of the dark-etching interface phase is shown in Fig. 1. Decrease in ductility accompanies the appearance of the minor phase but has not always been attributable solely to the presence of the phase. Although the dark-etching phase has been observed in alloys under a rather narrow range of heat-treatment conditions, it is of general interest since it is always associated with the presence of hydrogen. The known embrittling effect of hydrogen makes any facet of its behavior of particular importance. The intergranular phase has been observed in titanium-base alloys with relatively high amounts of the ß-stabilizing elements. AN extended program devoted to the development of a matrix for holding diamonds of a size and. kind not heretofore generally used is being carried on by the Carboloy Company, and this paper describes the part of the development that affects mining and its allied industries. Labora-tory and field work so far has indicated the following: 1. Tungsten carbide and cobalt form the most desirable known matrix material for the holding of diamonds for drilling work. 2. Industrial bort diamonds in sizes and of a class not generally heretofore acceptable and therefore less expensive can be successfully held in this cemented carbide matrix. 3. In exploratory drilling, the combination of bort diamonds, impreg-nated throughout a matrix of tungsten carbide and cobalt, when fabri-cated onto drilling crowns, is an indicated economic substitute for drilling crowns in which the diamonds are set by hand, mechanically or by casting. 4. This impregnated type of drilling crown or bit has definite possi-bilites of revolutionizing the drilling of blast holes, particularly in the harder formations. This will be brought about by the development of high-speed light-weight rotary equipment using an impregnated diamond bit to replace the percussion drill now in general use. (The development of this rotary equipment is well past the laboratory stage at this time.) 5. That the use of a rotary bit is a preventive measure in the fight against silicosis. The development of this product was started by G. F. Taylor at the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Co. It was early recog-nized that it had possibilities in the drilling field and the present product is the result of considerable experimental work with other powdered metals as well as with tungsten carbide and cobalt.

FLOW and fracture are admittedly complicated phenomena of which we are yet only partially masters. There is not even universal agreement as to the details of the language best adapted merely to describe the phenomena, to say nothing of any theory. Certain points of view, however, are widely held, and there are certain general expectations as to what sort of procedures will prove permissible. A complete description of any situation involving fracture would demand a complete history of all the variables in the control of the experimenter. The experimenter endeavors so to choose his independent variables that they are adequate to determine completely the situation in the sense that when an experiment is repeated on the same initial material and with the independent variables running through the same sequence, all the other measurable properties of the system will also run through the same course. It is, I think, the universal conviction that when we are dealing with phenomena of flow and fracture, the most important of the necessary variables are the external forces acting on the various parts of the body; when the force history repeats, with certain obvious restrictions such as that temperature must be constant and non- mechanical forces, such as magnetic field, must be small enough to be ineffective, then the history of all measurable properties will repeat; in particular the alteration of geometrical shape due to flow will run through the same course, and when fracture comes, the character of the fracture will be reproduced. Complete mastery of merely the descriptive aspects of flow and fracture would demand the ability to predict the entire course of flow and complete characterization of the final fracture for every possible combination of forces, varying in time in all possible ways, when applied to bodies of all possible shapes. This full situation is obviously of prohibitive complexity. The first stage in reduction to manage- able simplicity is to resolve the total situation into the sum of contributions made by small elements. Our thesis is that if each of the elements is adequately characterized, the behavior of the whole system is fixed. The element is usually taken of a simple geometrical shape, suggested by the mathematics best adapted to the particular situation. The forces acting across the faces of the elements are ultimately determined by the forces acting across the free faces of the whole system. The detailed process of finding the precise forces on the faces of all the elements in terms of the external forces involves the use of a special mathematical invention, the stress, a constructional quantity consisting of six components. The stress at any point in the body is determined by both the external force system and by the physical properties of the body at all points; quite different stresses prevail at the interior of bodies of the same shape under the same external forces in the elastic and plastic ranges. The influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of high-purity liquid metals and alloys of the Pb-Sn and Sb-Cd systems was investigated by the logarithmic-decrement method. The variation of viscosity with temperature above the liquidus followed the equation: n = AeE/RT No large increase in viscosity was found just before normal freezing of any of the metals or alloys investigated. Certain alloys, supercooled below their stable liquidus, however, did show a marked increase in viscosity. Experimental activation energies for viscosity were determined for the metals investigated. Liquid-metal density values were obtained by a modified Joeger's method. IK an investigation of the properties of molten metals, the study of viscosity as a suitable means for studying the physical nature of the metallic liquid state has been utilized. Although interest in the relationship of the liquid to the solid-metal state holds promise of broadening the knowledge of metals in general, much information that is available regarding the influence of temperature and composition on viscosity, especially near the freezing point, is still controversial. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of recent work on this subject. Although interest in factors influencing the fluid behavior of metals and alloys has arisen from theoretical as well as applied studies of liquid-metal properties, the development of a comprehensive theory of the mechanism of viscosity has been handicapped because so little is known about the liquid state. Several theories of viscosity have been proposed and among the more recent are those of Andrade,1 Bernal,2 Frenkel,3 Eyring,4 and Gutmann and Simmons.5 Athough these contributions have helped to establish a basis of approach for studying the nature of viscosity, the fundamental aspects of the variation of viscosity with alloy composition have, in general, been neglected.
